My Alleged Husband

Chapter 51: Chapter 50 Inferiority_1

After Xia Jing left Li Jiayuan’s home, she didn’t call Zhang Zhentian right away. Instead, she returned to her team. She was clear in her heart that Li Jiayuan could forgive her so easily not because she humbled herself but because of Xiao Wei. Now, Xia Jing truly felt that Li Jiayuan was a good girl. The past jealousy of a woman led her to do unconscionable things to Li Jiayuan, but now Xia Jing realized she was truly wrong. She felt ashamed of her cruelty and hadn’t expected that her inherently kind heart would, out of love for a man, extend to loving a whole city, let alone that it would engender a desire to destroy that city because the man she loved was with another woman.

Ever since Xiao Wei had failed his mission and severed his own arm, Xia Jing had not seen him again. Now she wanted to come back and see Xiao Wei, and she also wanted to gauge his feelings towards Li Jiayuan. If Xiao Wei also had feelings for Li Jiayuan, she planned to bring Li Jiayuan and Xiao Wei together.

Three hours later, Xia Jing returned to her secret base. After several months of absence, it felt like she was coming back to her parents’ house. As soon as she entered, she saw Xiao Wei standing at the door.

”Elder Sister Xia, you’re back, please!” Xiao Wei, seeing Xia Jing return, gestured for her to come in. He had always hoped for Xia Jing’s quick return. As an orphan, after he started following Xia Jing, he treated her like his own sister, always with the utmost respect, and Xia Jing valued Xiao Wei greatly.

”Xiao Wei, you don’t have to be so formal with me. It feels like I haven’t been back in so long, so I came to see you!” Xia Jing said with a smile to Xiao Wei.

Hearing Xia Jing say this naturally made Xiao Wei very happy. However, he had also heard a lot about the affairs between Xia Jing, Li Jiayuan, and Zhang Zhentian. He was worried that Xia Jing would be wronged, but he was even more concerned about Li Jiayuan, because Xiao Wei was clear on who was stronger and who was weaker between Xia Jing and Li Jiayuan. Standing behind Xia Jing, hesitantly looking at her, he wanted to ask about Li Jiayuan’s well-being, but he didn’t know how to start, nor did he know in what capacity he should inquire.

”Xiao Wei, I’ve already said you don’t have to be formal with me. Just say what you want to say. I consider you family, so I won’t mind whatever it is!” Xia Jing saw Xiao Wei’s hesitant look and gently patted his shoulder, speaking to him tenderly.

”Elder Sister Xia, if I say this, please don’t be angry.” Xiao Wei was worried that Xia Jing would be upset about his concern for her rival in love, but how could he know that in Xia Jing’s eyes, Li Jiayuan was no longer a rival but a good friend now.

Xia Jing, hearing Xiao Wei say this, thought: What kind of pressure have I put on Xiao Wei for him to be so worried about me getting angry? What have I done to deserve his consideration in all matters, to have him loyally follow me all these years?

Seeing that Xia Jing had fallen silent, Xiao Wei thought she might be upset and quickly said, ”Elder Sister Xia, please don’t be angry. I didn’t mean anything else, I...”

Xiao Wei hadn’t finished speaking when Xia Jing interrupted him, ”Xiao Wei, thank you. What have I done to deserve your blind loyalty? Xiao Wei, Elder Sister is telling you, no matter what decision you make, I won’t blame you. I consider you my brother, and from now on I will protect and take care of you as a sister should. You have to tell me anything, don’t bear it all by yourself.”

”Elder Sister Xia, I just wanted to ask, how has Li Jiayuan been lately?” As soon as Xiao Wei asked the question, he regretted it. He wanted to slap himself and said to Xia Jing, ”Elder Sister Xia, don’t misunderstand, I know I shouldn’t have asked that. I’m sorry.”

”Silly boy, what should or shouldn’t you ask your sister? I know you’re worried about Li Jiayuan. Rest assured, Li Jiayuan is doing very well.”

Hearing Xia Jing say this, Xiao Wei couldn’t hide his joy and smiled at Xia Jing.

Xia Jing looked at Xiao Wei like this and hurriedly seized the moment to press on with a question, ”Xiao Wei, Elder Sister wants to know what kind of girl Li Jiayuan is in your heart?”

This seemingly casual question actually carried profound meaning. Xiao Wei was a very smart and empathetic boy; how could he possibly not understand the significance of Xia Jing’s inquiry? He thought, since Elder Sister Xia has asked, why not just be truthful?

”Elder Sister Xia, to be honest with you, I think Li Jiayuan is a very nice girl. You know, despite her fierce appearance, she’s actually a silly girl. When I went to assassinate her, she thought I had taken a wrong turn and accidentally entered her room. Even after I repeated several times that it was Elder Sister Xia who sent me to kill her, she didn’t realize, and she never suspected it was you. When she spoke to me at that time, her voice was so sweet, and seeing her naïve smile, I just couldn’t bring myself to harm her. Her smile made me want to protect her, which is why I would rather lose an arm than kill her.”

Upon hearing Xiao Wei say this, Xia Jing roughly understood that Xiao Wei had been interested in Li Jiayuan from the beginning. Although she already knew these answers, she still wanted to hear Xiao Wei say it himself, because she was recording, and she planned to send this recording to Li Jiayuan after getting Xiao Wei to confess his feelings.

Xia Jing prepared to probe further into Xiao Wei’s thoughts.

”Xiao Wei, you couldn’t possibly have feelings for Li Jiayuan, could you?” Xia Jing asked, feigning surprise.

When Xiao Wei heard Xia Jing say this, his face turned red instantly: ”Elder Sister Xia, I...”

Xiao Wei still found it embarrassing to confess, and he hemmed and hawed for ages. Xia Jing couldn’t bear to watch anymore, and she said to Xiao Wei, ”Xiao Wei, happiness is something you have to fight for yourself. If you like her, just say it boldly; there’s nothing embarrassing about that. Besides, I wouldn’t oppose your relationship with Li Jiayuan just because I like her.”

”Alright, Elder Sister Xia, I admit it. I indeed like Li Jiayuan, and I’ve liked her from the start, but I can’t let her know.” Xiao Wei’s beaming smile slowly turned into a helpless gaze.

”Why not? If you love her that much, you should tell her!” Xia Jing wanted to tell Xiao Wei loudly how much Li Jiayuan liked him, but she knew she couldn’t do that; she understood she had no right to decide anything for Li Jiayuan and Xiao Wei.

”I’m not worthy of her. She comes from a wealthy family, and I have neither money nor influence. Moreover, I have an arm that’s been severed and reattached, and my hands have been stained with blood. How could someone like me possibly deserve her?” Xiao Wei said to Xia Jing with a sense of inferiority.

Xia Jing understood what Xiao Wei meant by his words. She didn’t say anything more to him and turned to leave the secret base. As she walked, she thought: It was all because of her that Xiao Wei felt so inferior. Unexpectedly, love could make someone who was once proud and satisfied become self-conscious, could make someone strong become weak, and could make someone sacrifice everything for the person they cherished.

Xia Jing decided to tell Li Jiayuan everything, to let her resolve the matter with Xiao Wei herself.
