My Alleged Husband

Chapter 62: 60th Chapter: Turning the Tables Against the Accuser_1

”Miss, can you please do me a favor? Please, I’m begging you. Convince your father not to just take over the bar like this—it’s my life’s work!” Guo Tao said, almost bursting into tears. He thought that Li Jiayuan would soften at the sight of his pitiful state and would persuade Li Haixiao on his behalf. But how could he know that if Xiao Wei hadn’t rejected Li Jiayuan, even if he sold fake alcohol, Li Jiayuan wouldn’t have said a word? Yet Xiao Wei had just rejected her, and at her lowest moment, Guo Tao came to sell her fake alcohol, causing Li Jiayuan’s unvented rage to be fully unleashed on Guo Tao. Guo Tao would never know that his bar wasn’t taken over for any fault of his own but because Li Jiayuan was heartbroken!

”I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with this. Even if I could, I wouldn’t! Excuse me!” Having said that, Li Jiayuan stood up, ready to leave. Guo Tao became frantic; he understood very well that only by getting Li Jiayuan to forgive him could he possibly get Li Haixiao to forgive him too.

When Guo Tao saw Li Jiayuan about to leave, he subconsciously grabbed her hand. Li Jiayuan turned around and slapped Guo Tao, yelling loudly, ”What are you doing? Who let you touch me?”

The people inside the café, hearing the commotion, turned their heads toward Li Jiayuan.

Embarrassed, Guo Tao said to Li Jiayuan, ”Jiayuan, I really do know that I was wrong. Please forgive me!”

To outsiders, it looked as though a young couple was having a quarrel, with Guo Tao pleadingly looking at Li Jiayuan.

”Young lady, a lover’s quarrel should only go so far. Don’t keep at it; it’ll affect your relationship!” An old lady came over and said to Li Jiayuan.

Even someone as naive as Li Jiayuan understood that the old lady had mistaken her and Guo Tao for a couple arguing.

Hearing the old lady, Guo Tao thought it was a good opportunity. He decided to use this chance to get Li Jiayuan to forgive him. He quickly said to her, ”Jiayuan, please forgive me. I didn’t mean it, I promise I won’t argue with you anymore. Please don’t be angry, okay? I really do like you, I truly love you. I’ve liked you since we attended university together; it has never changed over the years, please believe me!”

”That’s right, young lady. Look, your boyfriend has admitted his mistake. Just make up with him!” The old lady, upon hearing Guo Tao’s words, was even more convinced that this was a couple’s spat and spoke to Li Jiayuan.

Li Jiayuan knew that Guo Tao was seizing the opportunity, which is why he was saying all this. She glared at Guo Tao, and suddenly an idea came to her mind: Oh, Guo Tao, you’d go to such lengths for your company, event uttering such words. I’ll have to deal with you properly.

”Guo Tao, do you know how much I used to like you? But what about you? Behind my back, you fooled around with other women. Do you think you deserve me? Now you come saying you like me—where were you earlier?” Li Jiayuan continued the act with Guo Tao.

Guo Tao was baffled by Li Jiayuan’s response; he had intended to use the situation to make Li Jiayuan give in, but why had it suddenly turned into Li Jiayuan hitting back?

Li Jiayuan turned to the old lady and said, ”Grandma, you don’t know the full story. I did have a reason for what I did. I used to really like him, but he didn’t cherish it. When I was away on business, he had an affair and even fathered a child with someone else. How can I accept that? Grandma, you must understand how I feel!”

As Li Jiayuan spoke, she burst into tears, sobbing, and the old lady, having heard her side of the story, turned to Guo Tao with a sigh, saying, ”Young man, you look decent, but how could you be so heartless?”

”Young lady, I’m sorry I didn’t understand the situation earlier, and I hope you don’t mind. You’re better off not staying with this kind of man.”

”Thank you for speaking up for me, Grandma!”

Just as Li Jiayuan was deeply immersed in her act, a shadow flashed past the window. Li Jiayuan, finding the silhouette somewhat familiar, quickly chased after it.

She chased after him for a while and when she finally caught up, she discovered the person was—Xiao Wei!

”Xiao, Xiao Wei, what are you doing here?” Li Jiayuan stammered as she asked.

”Indeed, what am I doing here? Sorry, I might have disturbed the elegant mood of your confession. Please don’t mind me, Miss Li.” Xiao Wei said to Li Jiayuan with gentlemanly decorum.

Li Jiayuan knew Xiao Wei had misunderstood; she quickly started to explain: ”Xiao Wei, it’s not what you think. Please believe me!”

Xiao Wei found it amusing and said to Li Jiayuan, ”I heard everything. Now you’re telling me it’s not what I saw? Do you really need to torment people like this, Li Jiayuan? I was so worried that after I refused you, you’d take it hard. Now it seems I worried needlessly; you’re not troubled at all.”

”Xiao Wei, it’s really not like what you saw. Please listen to my explanation!” Li Jiayuan pleaded as she looked at Xiao Wei.

”An explanation, what explanation? Have you ever heard the phrase ’Not to be undead!’ Let’s not even mention what I saw; let’s talk about what I heard! I was sitting in the café the whole time. I saw him grab your hand; I heard you say you liked him. What else is there to say?”

Xiao Wei laughed coldly, and Li Jiayuan knew that Xiao Wei was truly angry now. She clung tightly to Xiao Wei’s hand, incessantly saying, ”Xiao Wei, it’s really not like that. Will you listen to my explanation, please?”

”Li Jiayuan, that’s enough. From now on, let’s not be in touch. It would make me feel responsible for the breakup of your relationship with him, and it would weigh on my conscience. You don’t need to explain anything to me; we have nothing to do with each other. I can’t believe that one moment you were saying you liked me and the next you were passionately confessing in the café! Li Jiayuan, I have to say, you really mattered to me, but what you did today disappointed me so much. I didn’t expect you to take revenge like this for my rejection. From now on when we meet, we’ll be strangers.” After saying this, Xiao Wei, tears in his eyes, pulled away from Li Jiayuan’s grasp and turned to leave.

Li Jiayuan desperately ran after Xiao Wei’s retreating figure, hugging him from behind: ”Please don’t go. I’ll never go to the bar again; I won’t cause any more trouble. Please, don’t leave me alone!”

Li Jiayuan started crying softly, and as she cried, Xiao Wei’s heart shattered. He turned around and embraced Li Jiayuan, saying, ”Li Jiayuan, I can’t stand any man touching my woman’s hand, not even her clothes, but today you... If you really like him, then don’t come looking for me. Be at peace and be with him!”

When Li Jiayuan heard Xiao Wei say this, she knew there was still a chance for them. She quickly spilled everything that had happened over the past few days.

Xiao Wei was moved and whispered in Li Jiayuan’s ear, ”Fool!”

Li Jiayuan, startled, grabbed Xiao Wei’s hand and asked, ”You called me a fool; does that mean you agree to be with me?”

Li Jiayuan looked at Xiao Wei with hopeful eyes.

Xiao Wei, helpless, gently stroked her nose with his finger and asked, ”What do you think?”

”That’s great!” Li Jiayuan leaped up with joy. She rushed over to hug Xiao Wei and gave him a kiss, catching Xiao Wei off guard with her action.
