Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 546: Chapter 45: Scaring Off the Grizzly Bear

The bears that are about to hibernate can be divided into two types based on their fat reserves.

The first type, with hungry bellies, becomes irritable and aggressive.

When provoked, they will attack relentlessly as if they’re mad.

The other type, with full bellies, is relatively calm, but still far more aggressive than most animals.

These bears will decisively attack when provoked, but they won’t be reckless.

If they detect a threat, they’ll retreat to avoid injury.

Chen Wen is currently dealing with the second type of bear.

He observed its bulging belly and hefty figure.

Chen Wen knew clearly that if he could just make it feel threatened, he could settle this matter.

So, he shook the fireball in his hand, making the flames burn more vigorously.

The grizzly bear looked at the flame with a trace of fear.

Even its massive body subtly moved back a bit.

Useful!

Chen Wen’s eyes lit up. This grizzly bear was more afraid of the flames than he expected.

Since that was the case, he split the fireball into two with a reverse grip and threw one out.

The orange-red flames tore through the pitch-black night sky, landing not far in front of the grizzly bear.

Seeing the fire so close, the grizzly bear panicked completely.

Not bothering with the damned Wolf Mink.

In a panic about the flames, the grizzly bear turned and ran.

Its speed and determination.

Left Chen Wen somewhat bewildered.

Is this guy that afraid of fire?

Not resisting at all?

But anyway, the fact that the grizzly bear was scared off by the fire meant that Chen Wen temporarily managed the trouble caused by the Wolf Mink.

However, he needed to warn the Wolf Mink next.

...

Chen Wen was bewildered, but the guide behind the scenes saw some clues.

”This grizzly bear probably experienced a mountain fire.”

The guide estimated the time, saying, ”Two summers ago, this area caught fire due to an accident. If this grizzly bear has always lived nearby, it’s very likely it was present at the mountain fire, which is why it’s so afraid of flames.”

Hearing this, another guide nodded.

”This kind of animal is not uncommon. It seems Chen Wen is lucky; if it were a typical grizzly bear, he would need to put in more effort.”

...

Back on Chen Wen’s side.

He called down the Wolf Mink and the Gray Fox, making them stand in front of him.

The Gray Fox, sensing Chen Wen’s displeasure, stood very obediently.

The Wolf Mink, however, was nonchalant, seemingly disappointed that Chen Wen hadn’t killed the grizzly bear.

”King Kong, for the next few days, your food is cut in half!”

Chen Wen’s statement left the Wolf Mink stunned.

Without giving it a chance to speak, Chen Wen continued, ”Gray Fox, you’re not punished this time, but if it happens again, you’ll be punished together.”

The Gray Fox responded with a hint of grievance.

But it was secretly happy, as only the Wolf Mink was punished.

At this moment, the Wolf Mink argued, ”Why am I punished?”

”Because you’ve provoked that grizzly bear, so you’re punished!”

Chen Wen glared at it, ”Do you think you can kill it? Or do you think I can?”

”You... probably could...”

Mentioning the grizzly bear, the Wolf Mink lost its temper.

Chen Wen chuckled, seriously saying, ”I can’t, to be precise, it’s very difficult to kill it barehanded right now. To really kill this grizzly, you need to find the right opportunity, set up a trap, and prepare over a long time to succeed. Do you understand?”

”Conversely, if this grizzly wanted to kill us, it wouldn’t need such complexity. It just needs to catch up to us.”

Upon hearing this, the Wolf Mink realized the level of threat posed by the grizzly bear.

It also understood the mess it had caused.

The Wolf Mink, now looking regretful, tucked its head, finally showing some awareness of its mistake.

Chen Wen didn’t continue reprimanding the Wolf Mink, but said, ”Next time when you’re outside, listen more to the Gray Fox. It’s smart. If you had listened this time and left after eating instead of provoking the grizzly bear, nothing would have happened. Understood?”

The Wolf Mink nodded.

”Alright, although your food is halved, you can still hunt outside. The prey’s internal organs I hunt will still be your extra meal, you won’t starve.”

Chen Wen added.

”Additionally, since this grizzly bear knows our location now, in the coming days you must stay vigilant, don’t wander too far. If you’re spotted, retreat here immediately, I have fire here to confront it.”

”Also... Gray Fox, do you remember where its territory is?”

The Gray Fox nodded, ”Yes, it’s easy to find, it’s an area that has been burned.”

Burned?

Ah, I see, this guy is probably so afraid of fire because it has experienced a fire and has psychological trauma.

In that instant, Chen Wen understood the puzzle in his heart.

He nodded slightly and said, ”Alright, just remember it. Once I finish my current tasks, the three of us will try to see if we can take it down. It has a lot of meat!”

Upon hearing this, the two animals became excited again.

But Chen Wen warned them once more, ”Before I start the action, you’re absolutely not allowed to provoke it on your own, got it?”

The Wolf Mink and the Gray Fox nodded hastily.

Having warned the two animals, Chen Wen let them go play by themselves.

Then he returned to the shelter, took out some of the food he’d stored earlier.

The arrival of the grizzly bear made Chen Wen realize that the forest was even more dangerous than he had imagined.

He needed to be prepared and collect as many entries as he could.

The main reason he hadn’t hurried to collect entries earlier was because he had to build a shelter, and contact with animals came relatively late.

After all, this place is unlike others, the further back you go, the harder it is to build a shelter.

The weather and frozen ground double the difficulty of building a shelter.

But now it’s different.

The shelter is built, the next step is to hunt.

In this situation, the more entries the better.

Currently, the entries Chen Wen hasn’t collected mainly include the plundering entry from the Wolf Mink, the plundering entry from the Zeiller Bolete, and the healing extraction entry from the Gray Fox.

Among these three entries, the Wolf Mink has a higher chance of yielding a combat power entry.

The Gray Fox much less so.

In terms of battle capability, Chen Wen feels the Gray Fox is about the same as herbivores.

From memory, the Gray Fox is only active when catching small animals.

In short, tomorrow Chen Wen can collect the entries from the Wolf Mink and Zeiller Bolete, but tonight he’ll first take the healing extraction entry from the Gray Fox.

Chen Wen emerged from the tent, calling out to the Gray Fox.

The Gray Fox quickly emerged from the shadows nearby.

Curiously, it asked Chen Wen, ”What is it?”

”Good thing, but it hurts a bit, bear with it.”

Chen Wen, holding a hunting knife, asked the Gray Fox to come closer.

The Gray Fox hesitated but approached Chen Wen, who quickly made a cut on its back with precision.

Leaving a scar on the Gray Fox’s skin.

But the moment the scar appeared, the blessing of the Animal Doctor was cast.

The Gray Fox didn’t even feel the pain before it stopped.

”That’s it?”

The Gray Fox stared blankly at Chen Wen, unsure what he was doing.

Hearing the commotion from the system, Chen Wen nodded and said, ”Thank you, have some meat.”

Chen Wen took out two strips of bear jerky he’d set aside and fed them to the Gray Fox.

Holding the meat, the Gray Fox left in confusion.
