Chapter 517: Chapter 16: Successfully Making Fire

As Chen Wen returned, the assistants of the other contestants dispersed as well.

On the way back, everyone was discussing Chen Wen’s incredible luck.

Finding so many things at the start—only a few people managed this in the previous seasons, right?

In the earliest seasons, survival was not attempted in such remote areas.

The probability of encountering human artifacts was quite high.

Now it is much harder.

But just as everyone was talking, a monitor over at Gaston’s side exclaimed.

”This guy’s luck isn’t bad either! He actually found a knife lost by a previous survivor!”

Hearing this, everyone quickly gathered around.

Even Lin Jiawei was no exception.

On the screen, Gaston was smiling even more widely than Chen Wen.

He was holding a rusty iron knife.

”This was left by a contestant from season six,”

the guide said.

The season six survival site was also at the Great Slave Lake, and many contestants left their stuff here.

If someone is lucky enough, they can definitely find those tools.

Gaston was such a person.

Watching Gaston’s expression, Lin Jiawei couldn’t help but think to himself: This guy’s luck is truly unbelievable!

...

Back to Chen Wen’s side.

On the way back, he collected quite a bit of firewood.

When he returned to the campsite, it was almost noon.

Chen Wen began preparing to make a fire.

He took out a bird’s nest, a cigarette box, and a flashlight.

During his return, he had an idea to use the cigarette box and flashlight to start a fire.

”These two items are quite common for most people who enjoy outdoor and wilderness travel,”

Chen Wen said, ”so I plan to use these two devices to start a fire and teach everyone how to make a fire.”

Since the flashlight couldn’t be used, it was dismantled.

Chen Wen took the axe and gently tapped the joint of the flashlight a few times.

As he pried open the flashlight’s casing, its contents appeared before him.

The battery.

Specifically, it was a lithium battery.

The flashlight’s battery is an excellent device for starting a fire.

After Chen Wen took out the battery, he squeezed it with his hand.

There was no swelling, nor was it damp.

He set the battery aside and then took out the cigarette box.

Although the cigarette box is made of cardboard, the inside is lined with a layer of aluminum foil.

Aluminum foil can conduct electricity.

If you remove the aluminum foil, cut it into thin, long strips, and then make the middle narrower,

then place both ends of the aluminum foil strip on the battery’s positive and negative terminals, electricity can flow through the aluminum foil, generating heat to start a fire.

This method isn’t difficult, but it carries a certain level of danger.

It’s generally only used in emergencies.

...

Chen Wen sat cross-legged on the ground and removed the cigarette box’s aluminum foil.

Following the method he remembered, he explained while manually tearing the foil into long strips.

”Remember, don’t tear it so that it breaks off; otherwise, the efficiency will greatly decrease.”

Saying this, Chen Wen shaped the intact aluminum foil into what he needed.

After finishing with the aluminum foil, he went on to build a fire pit.

Using the collected firewood, Chen Wen quickly set up a campfire bundle.

He cleared away nearby vegetation and dug a fire trench with a shovel.

Now it was time to make tinder.

Chen Wen took out the bird’s nest and set it to the side.

Then he connected the two ends of the aluminum foil to the lithium battery’s positive and negative terminals, with the narrower part facing the inside of the bird’s nest.

As warmth spread through his fingers, Chen Wen knew the method would work!

And it worked quite well!

Soon, the temperature of the narrow aluminum foil rose.

The tuft of bird feathers it touched began to curl slightly, looking as if it would ignite soon.

Chen Wen felt excited—a fire would be started!

Tonight would be safe!

Just as he was thinking this, the bird feathers ignited!

A burnt smell wafted out, and sparks flew.

Chen Wen quickly set aside the lithium battery and aluminum foil.

Then he cupped the bird’s nest, pinching it with just his fingertips, blowing constantly into its interior.

Smoke began to billow out, thickening as it did.

Chen Wen seemed to already feel the warmth in his hand.

But things didn’t go as smoothly as Chen Wen hoped.

As the smoke rose continuously, Chen Wen, nearly faint from lack of oxygen, still hadn’t gotten a flame.

”Oof! Something’s wrong!”

Chen Wen stopped and brought the bird’s nest up to his eyes.

After a careful look, he realized sheepishly,

he’d made the same mistake as in the Sonora Desert—the inside of this bird’s nest was not completely dry.

”It’s ridiculous, stumbling twice in the same place,”

Chen Wen knocked his head.

The delight of finding the bird’s nest, animal trail, and so many tools made him overlook many details.

Like checking if the bird’s nest was dry inside.

Next time, this won’t happen again.

Chen Wen thought and took the bird’s nest apart.

He rearranged the damp interior to the outside and the dry exterior to the inside.

Then he used the bird’s nest fluff and some rabbit fur as tinder and reignited it.

As the temperature rose, the hairs curled and burned.

Finally, Chen Wen blew into the bird’s nest again.

This time lighting the fire was incredibly smooth, and in less than three minutes, the bird’s nest was ablaze.

Placing the burning bird’s nest under the campfire, the orange flame licked the kindling.

Thick smoke billowed out.

This is the inconvenience of wet wood—too much smoke.

But as the smoke gradually lessened, the wood began to burn.

To be safe, Chen Wen stored the flashlight’s lithium battery and the cigarette box’s aluminum foil in the box.

With these items, even if the fire gets extinguished later, I don’t have to attempt the high difficulty of fire-starting by friction.

And while the fire burned, Chen Wen placed a wet bird’s nest he found by the lakeside near the fire to dry out.

He also placed some damp wood nearby.

These things would become his emergency reserves and the basis for reigniting a fire if necessary.

...

Chen Wen lit the campfire on his side.

Director Greg watched, nodding with great satisfaction.

His years of filming experience made him keenly aware that Chen Wen’s fire-starting scene could be perfectly edited as an opening shot.

Very impressive!

As for Chen Wen’s survival skills, Greg had already formed an opinion.

Very strong.

And quite lucky.

Most importantly, he had many creative ideas.

Though some of them bordered on the bizarre, they were highly effective.

He was a rather wild, yet somewhat cautious survivor.

Greg switched the screen, no longer focusing on Chen Wen’s side.

Based on his judgment, Chen Wen was about to enter a particularly stable development phase.

...

On Chen Wen’s side.

After lighting the fire, he immediately went around to find some stones, stacking them next to the campfire.

Then, he placed the pot over the fire.

Given the weather, drinking some hot water would be comfortable!

While boiling the water, Chen Wen took his weapon, bottle, and can to the lakeside.

Using the lake water, he carefully cleaned the can and the bottle.

Thanks to the environment here, cleaning these items wasn’t particularly arduous.

And they weren’t especially dirty inside.

After cleaning, Chen Wen returned to the campsite with the items.
