Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 515: Chapter 14: The Bird’s Nest on the Birch Tree

Greg wasn’t just guessing.

Every spring and summer, tens of thousands of migratory birds come to the shores of Great Slave Lake.

The swamp wetlands in the northern part of Great Slave Lake are even a paradise for migratory birds.

It’s also an internationally famous bird-watching spot.

Although there aren’t many here, finding one or two bird nests shouldn’t be a problem.

Therefore.

Greg could make such a judgment.

However, maybe it’s because he’s out of the forest, his luck isn’t great.

Chen Wen searched for a long time and only found a bird nest that was half-flooded.

”Hiss, bad luck, it’s actually a bird nest that’s half-flooded. It seems that continuous rain in the past few days caused the lake level to rise and flood it.”

After figuring out the reason, Chen Wen took the damp bird nest away.

Having something is better than nothing.

This bird nest can still be used after being dried in the camp’s ventilated spot for a few days.

Seeing this scene, the guide and monitor who had just been embarrassed sighed in relief.

The guide laughed and said, ”It seems this contestant has some skills, but luck isn’t on his side. What a pity, what a pity.”

Upon hearing this, the monitor repeatedly nodded.

...

After bringing water back to the camp.

Chen Wen put the water aside and didn’t rush to drink it.

He explained to the camera, ”Water, especially raw water, if you want to survive long-term, you must be cautious when drinking.”

”Especially in high latitude areas, like now, I felt it when fetching water. The water’s temperature is extremely low, just a few degrees, at most ten or so degrees. Drinking such water would greatly harm the mouth and digestive system.”

Even with Chen Wen’s [Enhanced Digestive System], it’s still not good.

”I’ll just casually mention a few hazards. First, it might lead to diarrhea. I believe I don’t need to elaborate on the dangers of diarrhea. Second, it could cause the esophagus and stomach to contract from the cold, potentially leading to a stomach cramp. Especially when just after exercising, when the body is hot. In mild cases, it’ll just hurt for a while; in severe cases, it might even cause vomiting.”

”Additionally, this thing also irritates the gums. In short, I won’t drink water before making a fire.”

Looking at the sky, Chen Wen felt there was still some time before noon.

Taking advantage of this time, he planned to wander in the forest and continue searching for bird nests.

”Birds generally build nests in three places: the first is near reed beds by the water, the second is in trees, and the third is on cliffs. If you want to use a bird’s nest to start a fire, you must pay attention to these three places.”

Saying this, Chen Wen picked up a weapon and walked into the forest.

This time, he went in a different direction than before.

Hoping that this time, the place he goes to will bring him some good luck.

Chen Wen thought to himself.

...

Wandering in the forest, even though it was already late autumn and everything was withering, the surrounding scenery was still quite nice.

It had a feeling of the Da Xing’an Ridge.

Chen Wen couldn’t help but think.

However, at this moment, his main focus was still on finding bird nests.

Hard work pays off.

After wandering for nearly fifteen minutes, Chen Wen noticed a rather inconspicuous bird nest about a hundred meters to his left.

He didn’t draw attention to it and continued walking forward with a normal expression.

However, with a deliberate turn, Chen Wen came to a place about thirty meters from the bird nest.

At this moment, Chen Wen showed a look of surprise: ”Ha! What did I say? There really is a bird nest here!”

Quickly walking to the base of the tree, Chen Wen didn’t climb up to take the bird nest down.

There was no need.

He took out an axe directly and started chopping.

He chopped down the birch tree, which was about the thickness of an adult’s thigh.

Birch wood is hard and very suitable for making furniture, flooring, etc.

Therefore, Chen Wen decided to take this birch tree back to use as raw material for building a shelter.

Chen Wen’s actions naturally attracted the attention of the monitor and guide.

Seeing Chen Wen chop down an entire tree, both of them were a bit dumbfounded.

Is this contestant that aggressive?

To chop down a tree for a bird nest?

Amazing!

After cutting down the birch tree, Chen Wen picked up the bird nest.

After a rough inspection, he showed a look of delight.

”It’s usable! Very dry, and there’s quite a bit of down inside, feels like a nest of a small bird.”

Holding the bird nest, Chen Wen took a deep breath.

The fire problem is more than half solved!

After securing the bird nest, Chen Wen didn’t rush back.

It was still early, so he decided to explore further into the depths.

After all, he felt his luck was pretty good at the moment. If he could find some other useful materials during this time, it would be a big gain.

Continuing to go deeper in this direction.

In less than five minutes, Chen Wen made a discovery.

He squatted halfway to the ground, examining the tracks on the ground.

”Traces left by some kind of small rodent, this side is left by rabbits.”

Chen Wen made an accurate judgment.

He was completely different from when he was on the island.

He could now very accurately determine the animal paths left by animals.

He could even judge their species based on some of the animals’ habits and remaining fur.

For instance: ”The animal path here is relatively wide, such a large animal must be a rabbit, and there are many traces left, among the small animals here only rabbits would form groups, and looking at these animal hairs.”

Chen Wen picked up several tufts of fur and said: ”Most of these furs are light gray, mixed with some white. Considering the characteristics of the fur, I feel this should be the fur of an Arctic hare. This season is precisely the time when they are shedding.”

”Additionally, these furs are still very intact, not blown very far, this group of Arctic hares should have passed through here in the past few days. What good luck!”

Chen Wen’s face showed a smile: ”Hehehe, being able to find an animal trail on the first day, going back to find time to set up snares on the animal trail, maybe it won’t be long before I can enjoy tender rabbit meat and hot rabbit stew.”

Saying this, Chen Wen noted down the location.

And then continued moving forward.

...

Meanwhile, other contestants also had more or less some gains.

Adam used a bow and arrow to shoot two squirrels and raided the squirrels’ home, obtaining lots of nuts.

Phil, although he didn’t find any animals, found a patch of berries through animal traces.

Vic successfully shot a porcupine from fifty meters away using a heavy bow.

Gaston didn’t find much food, but he did find some fishing lines washed ashore.

Considering his first earned fortune came from a lake, Gaston began preparing a net, planning to fish first.

Roland was methodically logging, planning to build a shelter first.

Shijing Heren didn’t harvest much, but he found a good camping spot.

Vini shot a rabbit.

Hua Yun found a suitable camping spot and started hunting with simple tools and a cart.

Fred, relying on his great strength, had already chopped down several trees and started building a shelter.

Additionally, while cutting trees, Fred found some beetle larvae inside the trunks.

These white, tender larvae are an excellent source of protein, with protein content several times higher than beef.

Each contestant had their gains, and everyone was utilizing the valuable early time to develop.

No one dared to waste even a second.

No one was moved by the natural scenery, everyone was working hard.

This time, the contestants were very different from before!

Seeing the situation of these contestants, Greg couldn’t help but think.

Whether it was the requirements of the program team or the nature of the contestants before.

At the very beginning of the show, there were always some contestants who loved to do fancy operations, which then led to their joyful elimination.

For instance, someone who whimsically bathed and ended up losing their flint, that’s sheer folly.

Someone who got sentimental over a herd of deer and ended up starving to leave, that’s sheer stupidity.

Even someone who caught a fish, wept with gratitude to nature, and then the fish escaped and left, that’s nature taking back a fish.

Such brilliant talents came together, old and young alike.

Every time Greg thought of the situation in previous seasons, his head hurt.

Although it was a variety show at that time and not a challenge.

But thinking of those weird contestants, he always had some psychological shadow.

But now that wilderness survival is formalized and the contestants are all professional, the gap has widened.
