Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 507: Chapter 6: Choosing Equipment and Drawing Lots

”This time the quality of contestants is very high, except for the ones like Gaston and Shijing Heren who slipped in.”

Chen Wen commented, ”The level of the other contestants is still quite decent.”

This made the two assistants laugh.

Lin Jiawei coughed to hold back his laughter and continued, ”Mr. Liu also said that the contestants this time are really impressive. He mentioned that these people are pretty much your competitors in the Eight Extremes Challenge, so he wants you to take note.”

Chen Wen resumed his serious demeanor and nodded slightly.

After finishing reading and remembering the information about these contestants, Chen Wen looked at the new materials.

The next day arrived.

Chen Wen attended a banquet and met everyone.

To Chen Wen’s surprise, the contestants this time did not show any hostility towards him.

Instead, they all expressed curiosity.

After meeting everyone, Chen Wen had a general understanding.

With familiar faces, there’s naturally no need for much explanation; those who came this time are considered Chen Wen’s friends.

Among the strangers, the acting chairman Phil was very friendly to Chen Wen, even inviting him to visit their association for an exchange after this event.

Offering a lot of respect.

Naturally, Chen Wen also gave Phil enough respect and promised that he would definitely visit after the survival event.

The German contestants Vic and Fred, who were skilled with heavy bows, got along well with Chen Wen.

Shijing Heren, although his mentor had a dispute with Chen Wen,

he personally did not have any intention to compete against Chen Wen and behaved quite humbly.

Vini, perhaps because of his personality, maintained a neither close nor distant relationship with everyone.

He just ate in a solitary corner of the dining table.

The main purpose of the banquet was to let the contestants get familiar with each other.

Besides that, the director Greg announced at the end of the banquet that filming would officially start.

Time suddenly became urgent.

Chen Wen and the other contestants were well aware that this pure survival competition was about to officially begin!

...

The day after the banquet, everyone started the preliminary filming.

The main focus was on the outlook for this event and the reasons for participating in the program.

Chen Wen’s shoot was very concise: ”This time, I am here for the championship.”

”The reason for participating in the program is surely to experience the intensity of the so-called Wilderness Survival Olympics. I feel that winning a championship in Alone in the Wilderness would prove my worth.”

These words could be considered quite bold.

But it made the director Greg quite satisfied.

After all, Chen Wen was the contestant he was most optimistic about this time.

The preliminary filming finished quickly, and then it was time to draw lots for the survival locations.

Unlike other survival shows,

the lot drawing in Alone in the Wilderness isn’t very crucial.

The survival locations of the contestants are fairly similar and quite far apart.

Generally, they wouldn’t encounter each other.

So, everyone had no psychological pressure during the drawing.

Ultimately, the drawing result was: Number one Adam, Number two Phil, Number three Vic, Number four Gaston, Number five Roland, Number six Shijing Heren, Number seven Vini, Number eight Hua Yun, Number nine Chen Wen, Number ten Fred.

Everyone was quite satisfied with this result.

Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of the survival locations were quite clear.

Only Chen Wen’s number nine location was relatively harsher.

During the production team’s preliminary scouting, there was a black bear watering hole near the number nine survival point.

Therefore, encountering a black bear at this location was a certainty,

which was considered a disadvantage.

However, Chen Wen didn’t mind this at all; in fact, having a black bear was somewhat advantageous for him.

After all, if he could hunt or tame a black bear in the early stages, it would be crucial for his survival.

Then, everyone began choosing their gear.

The equipment for Alone in the Wilderness is a bit different from the previous life.

The freedom to carry equipment here is relatively relaxed.

Contestants can select from a list of items, and they can also bring their own gear.

However, self-brought items cannot be those prohibited by the list and must pass the production team’s approval.

Considering the conditions of his area, Chen Wen began selecting his gear.

The first piece of equipment, without a doubt, was a 12X12 waterproof tarp.

The climate along the Great Slave Lake is a subarctic climate, cold in winter, with quite a bit of precipitation.

A waterproof tarp could block the wind and rain in the early stages and serve as building material for insulation and waterproofing later on.

It’s a must-bring item.

The second item Chen Wen chose was an axe.

It can be used to chop wood and build shelters; it can also be used as a weapon for close-range defense and even for cutting up animal carcasses.

Very useful.

Moreover, Chen Wen is accustomed to using an axe for survival.

The third item, after pondering for a long time, Chen Wen chose a saw.

Of course, not a chainsaw or power saw, just the simplest hand saw.

This is intended for processing wood.

After all, this time, they’ll be staying for a hundred days, so the shelter is extremely important.

Bringing an extra handsaw to build a good shelter is not considered wasteful.

The fourth item, Chen Wen chose a hunting knife.

The size of a hunting knife is similar to a dagger, only slightly larger.

Its main functions are cutting and skinning during hunting, and it can also be used in combat, though the combat effectiveness is mediocre.

Bringing this could significantly save time in food processing.

The fifth item, no need to say, is the long spear.

The long spear can defend against large prey and can also be used as a javelin for hunting.

It perfectly meets Chen Wen’s current needs.

However, the production team does not provide long spears, so Chen Wen entrusted Lv Guocheng to have one delivered from his branch in Huangdao City, Canada.

The long spear was approved for carry after passing inspection by the production team.

Concerning weapons, Chen Wen decided to bring these four.

Next are the survival tools.

The sixth item, a three-pound block of solid salt, weighing approximately 1.36 kg.

The importance of salt increases with the length of survival.

In nature, animals have limited ways to obtain salt.

Great Slave Lake is a freshwater lake, so there’s no possibility of evaporating salt.

Therefore, a large block of solid salt would allow Chen Wen to comfortably survive the later stages.

The importance of salt is undeniable.

The seventh item, Chen Wen chose a large pot with a lid, not exceeding 2 quarts, which is around two liters.

A large pot is essential as a cooking utensil.

Especially for long-term survival in icy, snowy conditions.

After a day of labor outside, returning to drink a bowl of hot meat stew,

it’s not only physically comforting but also spiritually satisfying.

This is also a must-choose item.

The eighth item is a fishing net rope.

This requires no elaborate explanation; it’s almost a must-have for every participant.

Even those who don’t know how to weave gillnets made a point to learn the skill after receiving the rules.

According to Chen Wen’s guess, whoever can weave a gillnet earliest can gain the upper hand earliest.

Additionally, gillnets can later be repurposed into fishing lines to make ice fishing traps.

Others might not know about this trick,

but Chen Wen has learned it from Beard and Short Mustache.

So a gillnet is a must-bring item for Chen Wen.

The ninth item, Chen Wen hesitated for a long time.

In the end, he chose a 2-pound spool of number 21 snare wire.

The production team doesn’t provide ready-made snares, so contestants can only make snares themselves using snare wire to set traps for hunting small to medium-sized animals.

Chen Wen previously wasn’t skilled in long-range hunting, and even now, he’s only skilled in javelin hunting.

But he hasn’t had that much practice.

To be prudent, using snare wire for trap hunting is the best option.

For the last item, Chen Wen hesitated even longer.

Flipping through the production team’s list repeatedly, he found nothing suitable.

He asked the staff if he could bring a multifunctional infantry shovel.

But the staff said it wasn’t allowed.

Ultimately, after negotiating with the production team, Chen Wen brought his own shovel.
