Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 531: Chapter 30: Processing the Black Bear

Chen Wen’s successful hunt announced him as the contestant with the best early start in this survival challenge.

At the same time, the death of a black bear signifies that Chen Wen’s surroundings will become extremely safe.

After all, black bears are animals with a strong Territorial Consciousness, and there definitely won’t be more black bears around this one.

Similarly, it also means that Chen Wen will harvest a large amount of raw meat and fat.

A black bear about to hibernate has much more raw meat and fat than in the summer.

Finally, this also means that Chen Wen has made up for his early losses in one fell swoop.

Perfect!

If there must be a mention of a crisis.

This hunt indeed brought some crises to Chen Wen afterward.

First, food preservation is very difficult.

The weather is not yet cold enough to store meat outdoors, and small predators and some birds around will also be attracted.

Of course, for Chen Wen, these things might reduce his food, but more likely, they could increase his food.

Second, the covetous eyes of other predators.

The bear meat and bloody smell will undoubtedly attract other predators.

To say the least, the Wolf Mink will definitely be attracted.

And once targeted by Wolf Minks, unless they are killed, Chen Wen will definitely have trouble sleeping at night.

If handled improperly, Chen Wen might be held back by this meat instead.

In short, this suddenly acquired black bear needs more of Chen Wen’s actions to be completely turned into an advantage.

...

On Chen Wen’s side.

After the surprise passed, the returning calm allowed him to clearly understand his current situation.

”The previous plan can be completely abandoned.”

Standing next to the black bear, after confirming it was completely dead, Chen Wen said, ”After killing this black bear, my most urgent task now is to deal with the bloody smell around the shelter and to process this black bear.”

”This long spear hunt was quite successful, but it caused this black bear to bleed heavily.”

Looking at the blood flowing from the black bear, aside from what splattered when it ran away, the soil beneath it was stained quite red.

”This bloody soil must be cleaned out.”

Saying this, Chen Wen didn’t act immediately but continued planning.

”Next, drag the black bear to the lakeside for processing, preserve the innards, keep the bear skin, and skin the head.”

”Additionally, chop off its head, use the hunting knife to slice off the edible meat from the head, and finally, extract the brains.”

”I don’t intend to violently destroy its head; I want to preserve a complete bear head.”

”As for the rest of the meat, I plan to cut it into large chunks, bring it back, and use a smokehouse for curing. The current weather does not meet freezing requirements, making smoking the best method for long-term food preservation.”

After clarifying the plans, Chen Wen immediately started taking action.

This earned almost unanimous recognition from all contestant assistants.

”Very good planning.”

”Completely kept his head in the midst of joy.”

”It seems contestant Chen Wen has truly stabilized this time!”

”Wow! So strong, I wonder if our contestants can turn things around with one big catch.”

”If it must be said, Hua Yun seems to be tracking a female moose. If she can hunt the female moose, her hunting objective is likely half complete.”

The assistants discussed heatedly, but no matter their views, their eyes were filled with envy towards Chen Wen.

Such luck and strength.

Top of the tops!

...

On Chen Wen’s side.

He used a shovel to dig out the soil stained with black bear blood, packing it into canvas.

He had already moved the blueberries onto a waterproof cloth for drying.

Clutching the blood-soaked soil in the tent fabric, he walked about a hundred meters away from the camp to dispose of it.

Chen Wen jogged back to the shelter.

He equipped himself with a long spear, hunting knife, and axe, and additionally took the candy box, tucking it into the layers of his parka and insulated clothes.

Finally, wrapping his clothes with the canvas, he directly hoisted the black bear up.

This black bear was not very large, but it still weighed about 150 kilograms, roughly 300 pounds.

Hoisting a 300-pound beast is an impossible task for most adult men.

After all, the strength of a typical adult male generally only allows them to lift over 100 pounds at most.

Workers doing heavy lifting might go a bit higher, but not exceeding 300 pounds.

Professional athletes would be stronger.

But these people definitely can’t carry a beast through the wilderness.

After all, the wilderness routes and conditions are too complex, and animal bodies are not regularly shaped.

However, in the survival community, Chen Wen’s identity as the bearer of Giant Strength had already been established.

Back in Caprivi, he used a carry-drag method to bring a 200-kilogram Nile crocodile back to camp.

But this time, Chen Wen decided to put on an act.

The body of the Nile crocodile is relatively regular and elongated, making carrying and dragging, though exaggerated, not beyond human comprehension.

Plus, he spent a long time doing it.

But carrying a bear is quite different.

Moreover, prior to this, he was hungry for three days, having only eaten two rabbits.

The body was still relatively weak.

After brief consideration, Chen Wen decided to do the same as last time.

Carry it for a while, then switch to dragging.

Finally, he intends to appear panting and exhausted.

...

With this method of occasionally dragging and walking, Chen Wen soon reached the lakeside.

After laying down the black bear, he pretended to sit next to a rock, panting and acting exhausted.

This was acted.

But when he carried the crocodile last time, the panting was real, not acted.

After all, back then he hadn’t acquired [Giant Strength] yet.

After resting for a while, Chen Wen used the hunting knife to start skinning the black bear.

The black bear’s skin was thick, with rich subcutaneous fat.

Once Chen Wen skinned the entire pelt from the bear, including the head.

He then used the hunting knife to scrape off the subcutaneous fat brought down along with the skin, placing it into the candy box he had brought.

This was a consideration he had made before coming.

After processing the fat, Chen Wen used the hunting knife to cut open the meat on the black bear’s neck, exposing the spine.

Aiming at the gaps in the spine, he swung the axe.

With a snap, the black bear’s vertebra fractured.

With several more axe swings.

Chen Wen chopped off the black bear’s head.

After securing the bear’s head, Chen Wen didn’t plan to process it immediately.

Like with the bear skin, he intended to process the bear’s head the next day.

The most crucial task today was dealing with the internal organs and bear meat.

After setting aside the bear’s head and skin, Chen Wen began processing the bear’s body.

With the hunting knife, he started from the black bear’s hind legs, cutting along the centerline of the abdomen upwards through the muscle.

Very soon the entire body of the black bear had a large incision.

The internal organs, free from the constraint of the skin, quickly spilled out.

Enduring the strong bloody smell, Chen Wen took off his top, bare-chested, and began extracting the internal organs.

The heart and lungs were intact.

He washed these two parts, which didn’t require special processing to be edible, in the lake water, then placed them on the bear skin.

Then, he pulled out the liver.

The liver wasn’t intact, since Chen Wen’s long spear had torn it apart during the hunt, ultimately leading to the bear’s death.

After gathering the liver as completely as possible, he washed it similarly and placed it on the bear skin.

Finally came the lungs, kidneys, gall, and intestines.

He soaked the lungs directly in the lake water, kneading them like washing clothes.

Slicing open the kidneys with the hunting knife, he removed the odorous parts.

He preserved the gallbladder intact.

The stomach was directly discarded, while the intestines were turned inside out and thoroughly cleaned.
