Chapter 524: Chapter 23: Beginning to Weave the Thorn Net

”Is he really that brave?”

The guide, who had already gotten familiar with Lin Jiawei, asked, ”When he sees a bear, his first reaction isn’t to stay by the campfire and deal with it, but to charge directly?”

Lin Jiawei was speechless.

This was also the first time he had seen Chen Wen in this state.

After scratching his head, Lin Jiawei said, ”I feel like... maybe he’s just desperate from hunger.”

At this point, Fred’s assistant said, ”Wow, you Hua Country people are more like a fighting nation than us Russians. We wouldn’t go into the forest to fight a black bear at night.”

”At a time like this, you should stay by the campfire and wait for it to come into the lit area before considering fighting it, right?”

Upon hearing this, Lin Jiawei straightforwardly expressed: it’s a personal action, don’t escalate it to a national level.

”Hunting a black bear hasn’t been accomplished since the show started.”

Another guide said, ”Among the current contestants of the show, the largest carnivorous animal hunted was an American alligator taken down by one contestant.”

Almost broke the record...

Lin Jiawei thought, without realizing that deep down he never considered the possibility of Chen Wen failing against the black bear.

”You’re lucky.”

The nearby guide smirked, patting the Number Three Monitor’s shoulder: ”As long as this guy doesn’t get eliminated early, he’ll definitely make it to the finals after ninety days.”

Upon hearing this, the Number Three Monitor’s mouth turned downwards.

He can see it too.

If such a fierce guy can stabilize in the early stages, he definitely won’t go hungry in the mid and late stages.

Damn, encounters a black bear at night, still rushes with a long spear.

Imagine encountering a black bear during the day.

I can’t imagine what he could do!

The Number Three Monitor sighed and silently prayed for something to go wrong early for Chen Wen so he could return sooner.

...

Over at Chen Wen’s side.

In regret, he tried crushing blueberries to try to attract the black bear again.

But perhaps it was frightened by Chen Wen, or maybe it found new food.

That black bear never came close to the camp again after Chen Wen had turned all the snare lines into rope traps.

”Sigh!”

Before sleep, Chen Wen sighed again.

Why couldn’t he just be a bit more steady and wait for the bear to get closer?

Damn it, this negative effect of ”Territorial Consciousness” is too strong!

Next time, I must hunt outside the shelter.

Chen Wen secretly vowed never to engage in any hunting activities within his territory range.

And so, filled with regret and hunger, Chen Wen drifted into slumber.

...

The next day.

Other contestants more or less had some food come in, now in good spirits, they were up and about constructing shelters.

Hua Yun even wiped her face with some grease before leisurely continuing her hunting.

Yesterday evening, she discovered a plump porcupine.

Hua Yun once again used her signature move—the triple shot.

Although she missed two arrows, the third successfully killed that porcupine.

Taking advantage of the evening, Hua Yun dissected and ate the porcupine, and collected the fat to use as anti-freeze cream.

But when the camera turned to Chen Wen and Roland, the scene was a bit dismal.

Roland was a bit less hungry.

Even though, during free time, he used a bow and arrow to kill a squirrel, it was clear that one little squirrel wasn’t enough to stave off hunger.

Roland had already lost some weight and wasn’t looking very well.

And Chen Wen was much worse off from hunger.

One could tell from his face that his spirits weren’t very high.

And as he walked, Chen Wen gave an impression of weakness.

Really starving!

Director Greg thought.

If Chen Wen still doesn’t intake food today, by tomorrow, hunger signs will appear.

Let’s see if today’s trap checks bring any good results.

If something good is found, the situation can be revived.

If not, he might have to resort to eating those blueberries as an emergency measure.

...

As Greg thought,

With the continuous depletion of bodily reserves and ongoing hunger torture,

to be safe, Chen Wen planned to check the traps at noon to see if there were any gains.

If there were none, he planned to bask in the sun and gorge himself on pine beetles and blueberries.

Boost the energy intake a bit.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to maintain such a high work efficiency.

Once he fell into low work efficiency, he’d have to hunt and gather food.

The plans for the early stages would collapse.

Building his shelter would be indefinitely delayed.

Having decided, Chen Wen continued working in the morning.

Since in the Northeast, while training under Qu Yong, Chen Wen had gone through hunger training.

In hunger, he could also focus as much as possible and maintain work efficiency.

Plus with so much survival experience, Chen Wen’s spirit had become quite strong.

Even now, amidst hunger, Chen Wen’s work efficiency had only slightly declined.

Still applying the Pomodoro Technique, but this time Chen Wen followed the standard.

The first Pomodoro session was for organizing camp chores and fetching water, ensuring daily camp maintenance.

The second Pomodoro session involved cutting down two trees and hauling them back.

The third Pomodoro session was spent carrying back some stones.

During the fourth Pomodoro session, Chen Wen began weaving a thorn net.

As everyone knows, in the investment world, there’s a saying—you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Survival is no exception.

Although he discovered an animal path and set traps,

Chen Wen had to consider the possibility of traps failing.

Thus, fishing from the lake was clearly the second basket.

Chen Wen had learned how to weave thorn nets and was quite skilled at it.

So, doing this work, Chen Wen was still quite motivated.

He took part of the branches he had previously cleared and, using the shelter construction method, set up a weaving frame on the ground.

Two Y-shaped ends, with a wooden stick in the middle.

Next, he took out the net-weaving rope and fixed it onto the rope.

However, Chen Wen didn’t immediately start weaving the net.

A thorn net can be directly started, or tools can be used to speed up the process.

A seasoned fisherman with a thick beard had shown Chen Wen efficiency-boosting tools, a total of two.

One was a wooden shuttle, which could replace hands and speed up the weaving process.

The other was a small rectangular wooden board, called a weaving board by locals, which controlled the mesh size and kept every mesh uniform.

Both tools were relatively easy to make, and the time spent making them was far less than the time saved.

So Chen Wen planned to make both tools.

He found the leftover wood scraps he had processed earlier and used a hunting knife and axe for simple crafting.

In less than ten minutes, a crude wooden shuttle and weaving board were made.

After spending a few more minutes wrapping the fishing net rope around the wooden shuttle,

Chen Wen grabbed the shuttle and rope in one hand, and the weaving board in the other, and began weaving.

Weaving a fishing net isn’t difficult.

Simply put, it’s a repetitive knotting process.

And with the help of the shuttle and weaving board, Chen Wen was quite fast.

Even though there were only a few minutes left in the fourth Pomodoro session, Chen Wen’s net quickly took shape.

The first set of Pomodoro sessions ended.

Chen Wen went to drink tea and rest by the campfire.

Then it was a repeat of the second Pomodoro session.
