Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 532: Chapter 31: How to Defend Against Wolf Mink

After handling the viscera,

Chen Wen used the bear skin to wrap the organs and head of the black bear and returned to the shelter first.

He hung these things on the branches around the shelter and covered them with a cleaned tent cloth.

On the tent cloth, Chen Wen also spread some lush pine branches to cover the food.

He stored these things properly.

Chen Wen immediately returned to the lakeside.

In just this short time, some birds had already gathered in the sky above the lake.

Chen Wen observed and saw a vulture and two crows.

”They came so quickly?”

Chen Wen looked up and couldn’t help but murmur.

However, he didn’t deliberately drive away these birds that live on carrion and leftovers.

The main reason was that he couldn’t chase them away either.

But if these birds tried to snatch food, Chen Wen wouldn’t mind having an extra dish for dinner.

Taking out the hunting knife and axe, he began to dismember the black bear.

He chopped off the four legs and cut the bear’s body into front and rear parts based on the rib and muscle boundary line.

Then, according to the spine, he further divided it into left and right parts.

After separating the four legs, he divided the body into four parts.

While dismembering the bear, Chen Wen noticed that this black bear had very thick fat.

If it hadn’t come looking for him, the bear absolutely had enough fat to survive the harsh winter.

But this black bear was too greedy.

Chen Wen shook his head.

Then he carried the bear’s body and limbs back to the shelter in two trips.

And he deliberately left those inedible organs and the bear’s anal part by the lake.

Let the birds circling above break down these parts.

...

As Chen Wen transported all the bear meat back to the shelter, he felt a sense of relief.

This time, he had perfectly processed the black bear, not wasting a single bit of its meat.

Sitting by the campfire, after stirring up the fire.

Chen Wen rested for a while.

While resting, he cheerfully said, ”Struck it rich! I, who’s not good at hunting, practically picked up a black bear for free. Such luck!”

Not good at hunting...

How did those words come out of your mouth?

Everyone who heard this was speechless.

This must be Versailles!

Lin Jiawei couldn’t help thinking.

...

After resting for a while, Chen Wen started preparing to build a smokehouse.

Building a smokehouse wasn’t difficult, especially for Chen Wen, who already had enough materials.

He used stones and wood to construct the smokehouse before evening.

This time, for long-term use, Chen Wen mainly used stones for the structure.

Wood was used to build the framework.

After completion, Chen Wen began smoking the meat.

He focused on the bear’s front leg, quickly slicing it into strips with a hunting knife.

After hanging the meat strips on the branches inside the smokehouse, it had completely darkened.

Chen Wen put down his work and began preparing dinner.

He planned to cook the bear’s heart and liver into a broth and drink a bowl of it.

Animal organs spoil easily and should be eaten quickly.

Additionally, to intake fat, Chen Wen also added some fat peeled from the bear skin.

The broth, once in the pot, just needed to simmer continuously.

During this time, Chen Wen continued slicing the bear meat.

But just as he was busy working, suddenly, there came rustling sounds from the forest.

The negative effect of [Territorial Consciousness] triggered, and Chen Wen paused, subconsciously restraining his inner restlessness.

He perked his ears, attentively listening to the sounds.

It wasn’t a big animal, it seemed like a medium-sized or small animal.

Chen Wen muttered, taking up the axe.

For dealing with such agile medium-sized or small animals, an axe was more useful than a long spear.

Picking up the axe, after making a round around the camp.

The medium-sized or small animal making the noise seemed to be intimidated by Chen Wen and slowly withdrew from the camp.

”Something just came near the camp.”

Based on the animal information he had seen, Chen Wen frowned and said, ”It could be a wolf mink, or medium-sized animals like coyotes and red foxes. They might have been attracted by the bear meat’s smell.”

”It seems like I won’t be getting a good night’s sleep until all the bear meat is fully smoked and stored.”

Chen Wen sensed the danger.

If he allowed those medium-sized animals to approach and snatch the food, a lot of his bear meat would definitely be stolen.

But if he stayed on alert all night, he wouldn’t sleep well and would have no energy during the day, potentially getting dragged down.

Chen Wen scratched his head.

Storing it in the trees was one option, but if it was a wolf mink, that wouldn’t work.

Wolf minks are very good at climbing, and their bodies aren’t very large, meaning they could squeeze through gaps in defensive structures.

It seemed he needed to carefully consider how to deal with these little things.

Chen Wen thought.

...

Meanwhile, among the other contestants, someone else was also troubled by medium-sized predators.

”Damn wolverines!”

Vic watched as his painstakingly made meat storage platform fell from the tree, and the reflection of the campfire in his eyes burned a bit hotter.

He hadn’t finished eating the porcupine he hunted before, but preserved part of it, leaving it on the tree.

But tonight, after a long day, when Vic returned,

He found his storage platform destroyed and the meat on it completely eaten.

”Damn the sour pickles!”

After a careful inspection, Vic found that not even a piece of meat or bone was left, and he completely broke down.

The feeling was like a certain Japanese two-hour film where the husband works hard all day, only to come home and find his beautiful wife cheating with the bald neighbor.

It was too painful!

But Vic couldn’t do anything.

He specialized in using heavy bows, so his hunting skills were mostly focused on large prey.

If he encountered such small creatures in ambush or face-to-face, it was fine.

But if not, he couldn’t do much.

He wasn’t good at setting traps, and even if he set them, they were only simple snare traps.

These worked for rabbits and squirrels but not for wolverines.

Resigned, Vic could only repair the storage platform and put it back up.

Then, angrily went to bed hungry.

...

”Wolverines are indeed hard to deal with.”

Seeing this, Greg couldn’t help but say.

Next to him sat a middle-aged, handsome blond Caucasian man.

He nodded slightly and said, ”That’s right. For wolverines, unless you hang the food with a rope or stack a robust storage place with big stones, other methods aren’t very effective.”

”Ha, that reminds me of when you participated, you were also tormented by these little things, losing nearly forty percent of your food. It seems even you, the president of the Adventure Association, had no solution against these little guys.”

Greg smiled and reminisced about the past, glancing at his friend beside him, currently the president of the Canadian Adventure Association and also the president of the Survival Association—Pal.

Pal sighed at the mention, ”If my food hadn’t been stolen back then, I probably would have lasted until the end and won, but unfortunately.”

After speaking, Pal urged Greg, ”What about that person you mentioned? I didn’t come here just to hear you talk about my failures.”

”Why so impatient? He’s probably being troubled by wolverines now, by the way, aren’t you going to check on your association’s Gaston?”

Greg asked.

Pal grinned, ”That guy is a mystery to me. Technically, he’s average, but his luck is incredibly good. Let’s not talk about him, I want to see the person you mentioned.”

Greg helplessly switched the screen to Chen Wen’s side.
