Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 535: Chapter 34: Tanning Bear Hide

Today’s task is quite simple.

As Chen Wen ate breakfast, he pondered over the day’s plan.

The bear meat needs to continue being smoked.

He planned to use the hunting knife to continue slicing the bear meat.

Additionally, the bear’s head also needs to be utilized.

Chen Wen planned to use the hunting knife to scrape the meat off the bear’s head, then dig out the eyes, using the knife or a slender stick to extract the bear’s brain through the eye sockets.

This will be used to tan the bear hide.

Since he didn’t bring a sleeping bag, Chen Wen planned to tan the bear hide to make a leather blanket.

Additionally, the bear’s four paw hides can also be tanned to make bear leather gloves.

Also, the fat from the bear’s body, Chen Wen planned to store a portion for later use.

As Chen Wen was thinking about these things.

Up in the tree, the Wolf Mink that watched the camp all night jumped down shakily.

It walked up to Chen Wen, looking extremely hungry.

Chen Wen slapped his forehead: Great, I have to prepare food for this guy too.

After all, with food available, the Wolf Mink’s loyalty is unbelievably high.

But once food is scarce, Chen Wen felt this guy would most likely leave.

”How much do you want to eat?”

After turning off the recording device again, Chen Wen asked, ”You don’t need to eat much at once here, you have three meals a day, just like me.”

Hearing this, the Wolf Mink thought about it.

Finally, it said, ”I don’t know, I used to eat a lot at once and then go a long time without eating, I feel like I could do that now too.”

”Is that so...?”

Seeing the Wolf Mink had no intention of changing its previous lifestyle in the short term, Chen Wen decided to respect its habits.

He took out the bear’s foreleg and generously placed it on the ground: ”Eat, just as per your previous lifestyle, eat as much as you can!”

But half an hour later, Chen Wen would deeply regret this decision.

Upon hearing this, the Wolf Mink immediately got excited.

Let me eat as much as I can?!

This is awesome!

Never encountered such a nice animal!

The Wolf Mink didn’t hold back, directly approaching the bear’s foreleg and started eating without any grace.

Initially, Chen Wen found the Wolf Mink’s eating stance quite cute.

After all, it didn’t take much effort to tame it.

But five minutes later, seeing that the Wolf Mink’s eating didn’t slow down, Chen Wen showed some surprise.

How can this guy eat so much?

In these five minutes, it must have eaten three pounds of raw meat, right?

And ten minutes later, as the Wolf Mink’s eating speed finally slowed, Chen Wen couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.

Not bad, although it eats a lot, it’s still within acceptable range.

But until half an hour later.

The Wolf Mink lifted its rear: ”I’m full!”

Chen Wen was utterly exasperated.

Damn it, this little critter really eats a lot, doesn’t it?!

It nearly devoured the entire bear’s foreleg, leaving only the paw area and some meat on the bones that it couldn’t bite off.

”After this meal, how long can you go without eating?”

Chen Wen asked.

The Wolf Mink pondered for a moment, then said, ”Several days.”

Several days?

How do I feel like you won’t need to eat for ten days?

Thinking about it, Chen Wen felt quite helpless.

This little critter just eats too much!

Why does it feel like I can’t afford to keep this guy?

...

Behind the camera.

Monitor number one and Lin Jiawei were also shocked by the Wolf Mink’s appetite.

However, the guide was quite experienced.

He said, ”This Wolf Mink still has wild instincts, it eats like a wild Wolf Mink, stuffing until it can’t fit anymore.”

”After all, wild animals don’t have fixed food sources and typically don’t ration food, so they gorge first, then look for their next meal.”

”However, the Wolf Mink eats so much because it exercises quite a lot, these things sleep only four to five hours a day, but if it follows Chen Wen for survival with reduced activity, after eating this time, it probably won’t feel hungry for at least ten days.”

Hearing this, Lin Jiawei relaxed a little.

After all, with the Wolf Mink’s recent eating style, even if Chen Wen hunted a bear, it wouldn’t be enough!

...

On Chen Wen’s side.

He also realized the situation.

If he can reduce this guy’s activity, its appetite is sure to be suppressed.

Therefore, Chen Wen said, ”Next, I want you to stay at the camp and watch the food, don’t let anything take it away, how do you feel?”

The Wolf Mink eagerly agreed.

”No problem, you’re so good to me, giving me so much to eat and not making me work, it’s like a dream life!”

Hearing the Wolf Mink’s straightforward words, Chen Wen managed a smile.

But secretly, he decided, one Wolf Mink is enough!

If another Wolf Mink appears in the future, it will be driven away primarily, and hunted secondarily, absolutely not tamed!

...

After dealing with the Wolf Mink’s affairs, Chen Wen began processing the bear’s head.

Taking the bear hide from the tree, he looked at the bloody bear head and shivered.

This thing looks terrifying!

He took out the hunting knife and started to carve the meat.

The meat on the bear’s face was somewhat easy to carve, taking just a few minutes for Chen Wen to clean the meat off the bear’s cheeks.

But the bear’s neck and tongue took quite a bit of effort.

However, with Chen Wen’s persistent efforts, this bloody bear head soon became bare bones.

Feeling the meat was mostly removed, Chen Wen used a slender stick and planned to pierce it into the bear’s brain through its eye sockets.

But Chen Wen found that this seemed impossible here.

After checking other parts again, Chen Wen finally found the bear head’s hollow spot.

From there, he pierced the stick.

As he stirred the stick continuously, the bear’s brain was mashed by Chen Wen and slowly flowed out from the hollow.

He immediately smeared the bear’s brain evenly on the bear hide.

Feeling the brain fluid had almost drained, Chen Wen stopped his hand.

Folding the bear hide, Chen Wen placed it under the shade of a tree.

Waiting for the brain matter to tan the bear hide.

And after dealing with the bear hide, this skull-only bear head was inserted onto a stick and placed around the camp.

The Wolf Mink, upon seeing this, was somewhat puzzled: ”Why are you putting this thing around the camp?”

”It’s a deterrent!”

Chen Wen confidently replied, ”Some animals might see the bear’s head and be scared enough not to come close.”

Upon hearing this, the Wolf Mink dismissively shook its head.

To it, unless there is no food here, it absolutely won’t be scared away by the bear’s head.

Moreover, the thing doesn’t even resemble a bear, and its blood smell makes it tempting instead.

Although it didn’t understand Chen Wen’s actions, considering the food Chen Wen provided, the Wolf Mink didn’t say more.

And after setting up the bear’s head, Chen Wen began continuing to process the bear’s body.

He reserved one bear leg.

This bear leg was left for the Wolf Mink, and the remaining meat was sliced into strips for smoking.

This kept him busy all morning.

Lunch was bear innards soup.

This time, it was several parts of the innards with a strong taste, making Chen Wen shake his head while eating.

But he still endured it.

As time spent surviving increased, Chen Wen felt his taste buds had dulled to a certain extent.

Now, many unpleasant items he could eat without forcing himself.

Unless they’re particularly unpalatable.

After eating, Chen Wen thought about it and planned to check the traps and pick blueberries.

He left the home in the care of the Wolf Mink, asking it to watch over it.
