Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 521: Chapter 20: The Modded Pomodoro Technique

Next morning.

As the most critical period in the early stages, all participants were busy.

Chen Wen was looking for suitable trees to use as main beams.

He ruled out pine trees.

The pine trees here are all Western white pine, with soft, light wood and very low strength.

Plus, the rampant beetles made them prone to infestation.

Not suitable for main beams.

Therefore, Chen Wen focused his attention on the tall birch trees.

In this area, birch trees are generally around fifteen meters tall, with taller ones reaching twenty meters.

The wood of these trees is dense and strong enough.

If he could find a large birch tree without any insect infestation, the main beam would be settled.

After searching around for a while, Chen Wen spotted his target.

A straight birch tree, estimated to be about sixteen or seventeen meters tall, fairly thick, and without any signs of infestation.

Having chosen his tree, Chen Wen knelt at the base of the birch tree, took out a steel saw, and began sawing.

However, before he started cutting, he observed the orientation of the tree.

Then he began to exert his strength.

The saw moved back and forth, sending wood shavings flying.

When the saw cut about halfway through the trunk.

Chen Wen sawed down diagonally about four fingers above the initial cut.

Seeing this, the new monitor slightly nodded.

This guy has experience.

He knows how to control the direction in which the tree falls.

In the sixth season, a hothead tried to chop down a tree with an axe but almost got himself killed because he couldn’t control the direction of the fall.

It gave people quite a scare back then.

Director Greg even found a lumberjack overnight and sent them to teach the contestant how to chop trees without getting crushed.

But unfortunately.

That contestant had a mental breakdown on the fifty-seventh day and left the competition in gloom.

...

Back to the main topic.

Feeling the cut was about right, Chen Wen quickly stood up.

He moved to the other side, pressed against the birch with both hands, and pushed with force: ”Timber!”

As the loud call echoed, the uncut side of the birch tree’s base emitted a sharp cracking sound.

Then, wood shavings burst out.

The wood fibers tore under enormous force.

Because Chen Wen had already made a notch, and his strength was directed to the other side.

In just a few breaths.

The tall birch tree fell in the direction Chen Wen intended.

With a loud crash!

As the birch fell, in the direction Chen Wen had predicted.

A not-so-tall pine tree was hit directly by the birch tree.

The poor pine took an undeserved hit, broke, and fell as well.

Two birds with one stone!

Seeing his prediction succeed, Chen Wen couldn’t help but hum his adapted song: ”We are the lumberjacks, each time we work, we take down two trees...”

Feeling Chen Wen’s genuine joy.

The new monitor couldn’t help but nod.

Good mindset!

In wilderness survival, mentality is also important.

Especially in solo survival, only those physically and mentally robust can last a hundred days.

Otherwise, like the contestant who retired early due to a poor mindset.

Even with the conditions to win, without strong mental strength, he had to give up.

Greg glanced at Chen Wen and nodded lightly.

From his initial observations, the current competitors seemed mentally strong.

The sole female, Hua Yun, also displayed a mental strength not inferior to the males.

...

After cutting down the main beam.

Chen Wen split the birch tree in half.

Then, he carried the hundreds of pounds of wood slowly back to the camp.

The new entry [Giant Strength] was a huge help.

If not for this entry, Chen Wen estimated he would have had to cut it into three pieces to carry back.

After making two trips and transporting the birch and pine back.

Chen Wen had some tea and started making snare traps during his break.

He resorted to his old method.

Using snares targeted at small to medium-sized animals.

These traps are precise against small to medium-sized animals.

However, they have the downside of being heavily reliant on setup.

If the setup location is poor or not concealed enough, the trap’s effectiveness will be significantly reduced.

But given Chen Wen’s extensive survival and training experience, he was no longer a novice.

His ability to set traps had reached a level comparable to some renowned survivalists.

This time, Chen Wen took half an hour to set up seven snare traps.

After placing the snare traps, he retracted the line into the box.

Chen Wen resumed digging.

He planned to finish digging the pit before noon.

Seeing Chen Wen busy again.

Lin Jiawei could no longer bear to calculate the calorie deficit.

This was purely consuming early reserves!

Just sawing down that birch tree and carrying it back to the shelter in the morning.

The energy consumed was several times more than what those five larvae provided.

And now starting to dig again, the energy drain was innumerable.

Besides, Chen Wen’s working speed was relatively fast; each shovel of soil felt like he was shoveling the fat off his body.

But fortunately, Chen Wen hadn’t completely given up on hunting; setting snare traps in the morning was a good move.

It seemed, in the afternoon, Chen Wen would go set the traps.

Hopefully, the traps would catch something to replenish energy!

Lin Jiawei silently prayed.

...

After working for about an hour.

Chen Wen straightened up, stretching his sore waist and joints.

After an hour of hard work, he finally dug out the pit!

”This is the pit where I’ll sleep for the foreseeable future,”

Chen Wen explained, ”Even though it seems primitive now, I believe, in fifteen days, no, in ten days, this place will look completely different!”

This confidence infected the second monitor and Lin Jiawei, making them both nod in agreement.

Definitely!

After excavating the pit and doing some simple repairs on its corners.

Chen Wen climbed to the surface and took a break.

The orderly planning made his time management very efficient.

The first monitor and guide, who just came for their shift, noticed the method behind it.

Yesterday, they simply thought Chen Wen wanted to advance all tasks simultaneously.

But now they realized, this seemed like the Pomodoro Technique!

Upon hearing their discussion, Lin Jiawei curiously asked, ”What’s the Pomodoro Technique?”

The guide glanced at Lin Jiawei, showing respect for the assistant of this remarkable contestant, and replied, ”It’s simple, the Pomodoro Technique involves picking a task and setting a Pomodoro time of 25 minutes, focusing on work without any unrelated tasks until the Pomodoro timer rings, then taking a short break of no more than 5 minutes before starting the next Pomodoro. After four Pomodoro periods, take a longer break.”

Lin Jiawei seemed confused by this explanation.

”What is this?”

The first monitor saw this and explained, ”This method gives a continuous sense of achievement, completing a task during a Pomodoro period provides a sense of achievement, and helps keep tasks organized.”

”The main thing is that constantly switching tasks maintains freshness and efficiency, as many people become irritable and bored when doing the same task for too long, reducing efficiency.”

At this point, a guide nearby chimed in: ”For example, Roland has been chopping trees since landing, but yesterday, his efficiency was close to Chen Wen’s, and today it’s less than three-quarters of Chen Wen’s. That’s the efficiency gap caused by time planning.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Jiawei went to check on Roland.
