System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”I’m Lu Cheng from the emergency department. And you are?” Lu Cheng introduced himself.

”Hello Brother Lu, I’m Dai Linfang from the oncology department. You can call me Xiao Dai or even Old Zhu,” said Dai Linfang, his voice still calm and affable.

”Brother Dai, did you need to see me? It should be Deng Duanniu and Xiang Kai on duty now. I can call them,” Lu Cheng assumed Dai Linfang was there for a medical consultation.

Then casually asked someone else for his own phone number.

They were colleagues at the hospital, and colleagues also have relatives and friends. It’s common to ask a colleague to see a patient privately for a relative.

”No, Brother Lu, I’m here for a personal matter.”

”Brother Lu, it’s like this. Although I may not have a high degree, I know a little. I heard that you’re working on a project, and it felt like a whole new world to me. I was wondering if you needed any help.”

”Just out of boredom, I wanted to find something to do, so I made this call,” said Dai Linfang.

Lu Cheng’s gaze slightly sharpened: ”Brother Dai, your information is very up-to-date. Very few people know about this, and I’ve hesitated to mention it.”

”It’s all led by the teachers.”

Dai Linfang laughed: ”Brother Lu, you’re already in the circle, so of course, you’d be modest. For the teachers to favor you, you must be quite extraordinary.”

”If it’s convenient for you, could you recommend me?”

”Though I might not have other abilities, or have talent as good as yours, I can certainly help with odd jobs and the like.”

”And if the project needs to be carried out in the hospital later, I can help run errands.”

Dai Linfang was subtly revealing his connections to Lu Cheng.

He had found out that Lu Cheng’s project would ultimately need clinical implementation, and since Lu Cheng was at the State People’s Hospital, the project would likely be done at the Renmin Hospital.

”Brother Dai, the main thing is I haven’t heard of any other teachers needing more people. Maybe when they bring it up with me, I can mention it for you?” Lu Cheng, having quite a bit of experience, tried to brush it off this way.

But Dai Linfang said: ”Brother Lu, there might be enough people to do the work, but they surely need people for odd jobs.”

”A paper can have many co-authors, adding one more like me shouldn’t be an issue. You give me a hand, we have a meal together, and this matter can surely be settled.”

”Should I send you the location? I can have our boss cover the place anytime.”

Lu Cheng hurriedly refused: ”No need, Brother Dai.”

”This isn’t about money or meals, I’m just afraid I’ll mess up my current position!”

Lu Cheng took another step back.

”Brother Lu, as the saying goes, risk and reward come hand in hand. How will you know the situation won’t improve if you don’t try?”

”I assure you, Brother Lu, if you recommend me and suffer any loss, no matter the size, I’ll immediately give you fifty thousand, and if you’re kicked out, I’ll secretly give you two hundred thousand,” Dai Linfang said without much subtlety.

”Brother Dai, with that ability, you could find your own project group or company, couldn’t you?” Lu Cheng replied.

”Projects are not all the same. Who would dare easily use data that a company comes up with now?”

”Brother Lu, I surely have some connections, of course, I found out about the excellent project group you’re in and its high compatibility with my current circumstances.”

”To be honest, little brother here really needs this to boost myself a bit, to better facilitate future development.”

”If things don’t work out, little brother won’t let you suffer, Brother Lu. If they do work out, you definitely won’t suffer.”

”I’m not saying tenfold, but a six or sevenfold increase won’t be a problem,” said Dai Linfang.

Lu Cheng said, ”Brother Dai, it’s not about the money. I’m also being led by my teachers now, and I wouldn’t want to easily pass up this opportunity, you know.”

Dai Linfang was silent for a moment, then he said: ”Brother Lu, your project group must be planning to set the project in Ji City!”

”It’s more convenient for everyone that way, no need for more hurdles. How about you pass on this message?”

Finding soft tactics ineffective, Dai Linfang went slightly firmer.

This was the first time Lu Cheng had heard someone directly threaten to ruin a project.

”Huh? Brother Dai, what do you mean by this?” Lu Cheng said.

Dai Linfang laughed and said: ”Just joking, Brother Lu, I’m really here with sincerity.”

”I understand, Brother Dai,” replied Lu Cheng.

”You just said you also have certain connections within the province, you could bypass me and talk directly to my teachers, right? No need for me to be the guide.”

Dai Linfang sighed: ”Brother Lu, honestly, I tried, but haven’t yet found the right path.”

”From what I know, this project group’s setup is a bit peculiar. It not only involves provincial units but also out-of-province ones.”

”I wouldn’t dare do anything behind the teachers’ backs.”

”Moreover, I heard this project group might move to E Province anytime, which would be no joke.”

”Brother Lu, could you help by introducing me?” said Dai Linfang.

”Brother Dai, then I really can’t help. Honestly, I’m unable to,” Lu Cheng replied decisively.

Dai Linfang was silent for a while, and then in a slightly colder tone: ”Not even willing to relay a message? Such disrespect?”

”Brother Dai, your words would only cause conflict. There’s really no need to pass them on,” Lu Cheng remained polite.

”Then your clinical project in Ji City won’t be able to proceed,” Dai Linfang was more straightforward.

”Then we just won’t do it in Ji City,” Lu Cheng said calmly.

”Huh? What do you mean?” Dai Linfang’s voice sounded a bit flustered.

”Are you planning to take the clinical project elsewhere?”

Lu Cheng said, ”I don’t know, these are things the teachers are discussing. I just feel that if it can’t be done in Ji City, it can be done elsewhere.”

”E Province, or other prefecture-level cities in Xiang Province, there will always be places to do it.”

Dai Linfang’s tone was peeved: ”There’s no need for that, is there?”

”I’m not the one making the decisions, am I? I was just answering your question, Brother Dai,” Lu Cheng replied.

”Then why are you able to get into the group and have the project moved freely? This proves your position in their minds isn’t ordinary,” Dai Linfang really had no problem with IQ.

”Moreover, it wasn’t initially planned for elsewhere either.”

”The teachers are willing to take me along, and I’m deeply grateful. But I can’t overstep my role,” said Lu Cheng.

”Could you just do me this favor? I really need this,” Dai Linfang seemed desperate as if clutching at a straw.

”I can’t help, really, how much favor do I have to waste?” Lu Cheng said.

”Then you just wait and see if you can secure your clinical project,” said Dai Linfang, hanging up the phone unilaterally.

He didn’t threaten to ruin Lu Cheng’s career, such a reason would be too far-fetched to make Lu Cheng unable to work at the State People’s Hospital.

Those not afraid of offending others also wouldn’t offend people in such a manner.
