System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

After communicating by phone, exchanging WeChat contacts came naturally.

After Lu Cheng sent the video, all that was left was to wait for Professor Lu to review the operation video and respond.

January 17th, the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month. A cold wind arose at night, and the lights outside the window were cold.

Mu Nanshu and Lu Cheng had already sat down at the heating table; the one in the study was the standard long wind-heating table!

Mu Nanshu was also taking a break: ”Who did you call?”

”A teacher from Kyoto, recommended by someone else, who might help me get some surgery permissions in advance, so I thought I’d give it a try.”

”Right now, without surgical permissions, being on duty is quite hindering.” Lu Cheng put down the phone.

Mu Nanshu asked: ”Don’t you like these somewhat leisurely days?”

Lu Cheng said: ”I’m far from the point where I can take it easy. I still need to engage more in clinical work to have room for growth.”

Whizz whoosh!

While Lu Cheng spoke, Professor Lu’s reply already arrived.

”I’ve watched all the videos you sent, but I still can’t support your proposal.”

”Unless you’re willing to come to Kyoto and join my team, where I can back you up.” Professor Lu’s tone was cautious.

”New surgical techniques are not that easy to implement. There are still many areas of discussion worth exploring in the materials you sent.”

Lu Cheng felt a bit regretful upon hearing this: ”Thank you, Teacher Lu, for your time.”

Lu Cheng’s reply was quickly responded to: ”Rejecting so decisively? Aren’t you going to consider joining my team?”

Lu Cheng replied: ”Teacher Lu, my current situation is quite awkward, a lot of units still require more preparation, and joining your unit would need even more time.”

”I apologize for the abrupt disturbance.”

Professor Lu didn’t give up: ”What’s your situation?”

”Undergraduate,” Lu Cheng answered.

Professor Lu remained silent for a long time without responding. After Mu Nanshu refilled Lu Cheng’s tea, he sat down again: ”I guess your response also startled Professor Lu.”

After waiting for more than ten minutes: ”Are you joking with me? You should find a concrete reason if you’re going to reject someone.”

Lu Cheng said: ”Teacher Lu, if it weren’t for this, I would have already joined my ideal unit to conduct my project, and I wouldn’t worry about surgery authorization issues, right?”

Professor Lu thought Lu Cheng was negotiating: ”You tell me the conditions, whatever conditions others offered, I can offer better.”

Lu Cheng said: ”Teacher Lu, it’s not about bargaining now. I’m really sorry to disturb you this late.”

Professor Lu said: ”Working on projects and permitting surgeries both require responsibility, not only to you but to the patients.”

”Without anyone overseeing or backing you up, no one dares to easily authorize you.”

Lu Cheng certainly understood these things.

Currently, the reason why Lu Cheng hasn’t obtained regular authorization for the new surgical technique is that he is still at Xiangzhou Renmin Hospital, and the professor who can apply for authorization for him is not there.

Of course, these professors couldn’t be expected to come over specifically to back Lu Cheng just because he wanted to work on these projects; they had too many of their own tasks to handle.

Subsequently, Lu Cheng chatted with Professor Lu for a while, before finally putting the possibility of going to Kyoto to find Professor Lu to rest.

Of course, the end result of Lu Cheng not agreeing was that Professor Lu would not grant surgical permissions, and Lu Cheng would have to slowly endure and wait on his own.

Despite the failure, Lu Cheng was neither discouraged nor dejected.

His ability wouldn’t be affected by whether he obtained authorization early or not. A well-stocked home has no worries.

Lu Cheng’s age was still young enough to wait; in the medical field, he was at most just a fledgling.

After Lu Cheng finished chatting, Mu Nanshu quietly laughed: ”I know you’re anxious now, but I advise you not to rush because we already have a solid foundation.”

”I’ve also prepared the grant proposal for the National Youth Team project, so we’ll secure more project funding, and our project is progressing steadily.”

”Since Brother Zhang joined the team, the current spleen injury animal model is getting progressively closer to clinical, and within about a month, Professor Tong should receive excellent feedback on the model.”

”Then, the spleen preservation surgery can be scaled for rehearsal in the lab.”

Lu Cheng nodded: ”Mm, okay.”

Lu Cheng knew that his career path had reached a turning point; this turning point required a halt and a gradual shift, rather than attaining substantial progress.

This was different from the previous tendon suturing he used to do, which involved optimizing an existing technique.

The new technique, after all, was something outsiders perceived as unreliable; it hadn’t yet appeared in clinical settings, so whether to apply it clinically required utmost caution.

Anyone could propose such innovations, but if every proposal was authorized, it would become actual human experimentation.

Medicine doesn’t permit ’unofficial’ human experiments for it protects the patients, and processes must be adhered to.

...

At night, 11:20 PM.

Lu Cheng originally thought he could rest well, but unexpectedly received a call from Xiao Zhaoxi.

After changing out of his pajamas, and hurriedly driving to the emergency department, it was already 11:40 PM.

”Brother Liang. Where is Director Xiao?” When Lu Cheng arrived at the doctors’ office, only the night-shift nurse, Liang Jianhong, was typing quickly on the keyboard.
