Caught in Affairs with Superstar

Chapter 1472: Chapter 658: Support

The entertainment industry exploded.

When Zhou Yun said she would sue, she really meant it—there wasn’t the slightest hint of bluffing.

Many celebrity artists have long suffered under these rumor-mongering media outlets, but most of them simply don’t have the kind of backing Zhou Yun has to take them to court.

The reasons behind this are complicated, but in short, suing these slanderous media outlets is basically a double-edged sword for celebrity artists.

Unless their bottom line is trampled, celebrities generally won’t choose to go head‑to‑head with the media through a lawsuit.

...

After Zhou Yun got off the plane, she was escorted through the swarm of reporters and fans and into the car.

This trip to France had somehow saddled her with a rumored boyfriend, and that put her in a foul mood.

That’s how it is for a female celebrity: even if she clearly and firmly states that she and that man are nothing more than nodding acquaintances, with absolutely no relationship, there will still be plenty of people who don’t believe her, insisting on seeing her through tinted glasses.

Especially for a top‑tier female star like her.

Scandal, even when it happens to an ordinary person, is a considerable upheaval, enough to disrupt a normal life—let alone for someone in the public eye.

Once the lawyer’s letter went out, it was like a stone thrown into the lake, stirring up waves upon waves.

Even the owner of the slanderous media outlet personally called her, implying there was no need to blow things up like this, and indicating he was willing to take the article down.

Zhou Yun’s goal was far more than just getting the article withdrawn.

”Your report has dumped such a huge mess on me. Do you really think retracting it solves anything?”

”Miss Zhou, isn’t this kind of scandal perfectly normal?” The boss’s Mandarin wasn’t very good; it carried a greasy undertone. ”Which female celebrity doesn’t have a bit of scandal, huh? Of course, I know this time our editor didn’t verify the information before publishing, so everyone misunderstood. That is indeed our fault. But we all eat from the entertainment industry’s rice bowl, you know? You should try to understand us a little. After all, everyone’s just trying to make a living—it’s not easy, right?”

Listening to this, the fire in Zhou Yun’s chest only burned hotter.

”To make a living, you people just go around fabricating crap about others?” Zhou Yun snapped, her brows drawn tight in anger. ”Is this your idea of playing by the rules? See you in court!”

She hung up immediately.

Zhou Yun was genuinely furious.

The attitude this man took on the phone made her feel not only disappointed, but even more enraged.

She had assumed he was calling to apologize, to plead with her; she had even been thinking that if he was humble enough, maybe she would consider forgiveness.

Who knew that wasn’t his intention at all.

What she hadn’t expected was that even with a lawsuit looming, they still acted as if their slander was perfectly natural, something they were entitled to do.

It made the anger inside her swell like a balloon, blown bigger and bigger, nearly bursting.

When Song Chi heard about her conversation with the Litai Media boss, he let out a sigh.

He was still on set and couldn’t come back, unable to comfort Zhou Yun in person.

”You really can’t take this to heart,” Song Chi said. ”He’s not wrong, in a way. Their whole line of work is digging up news on us to make a living. They spread rumors; whatever consequences they end up facing are just what they deserve. But if you expect them to have a conscience or feel guilty, you’re just getting mad at yourself on purpose. If they had a conscience, they wouldn’t be doing this in the first place.”

Song Chi’s words convinced Zhou Yun.

”You’re right.”

”Everyone’s cheering you on for suing them,” Song Chi added with a laugh. ”A lot of my friends told me that by doing this, you’re helping them vent some of their own anger too.”

Just like Zhou Yun, many of Song Chi’s friends weren’t big-name stars; they were just ordinary artists, yet they had all been slandered by unscrupulous media before.

Unlike Zhou Yun and Song Chi, they didn’t have the confidence or resources to protect themselves, and most of the time they just swallowed the loss in silence.

Public figures have to consider public impact no matter what they do. More often than not, that concern ties their hands and feet, making them hesitant and fearful, afraid to do anything.

The outlet that slandered Zhou Yun belonged to Litai Media, an established Outer Island media conglomerate whose capital extended across more than ten media companies including TV stations, newspapers, and radio—its financial power was enormous.

And because the company was based on the Outer Island, when they covered entertainment news in the mainland, they often took a ”stirring the pot from across the shore” approach, caring even less about consequences than mainland media. Over the years, they’d offended who knows how many mainland agencies and artists.

Zhou Yun’s move immediately drew a wave of support.

Among those voicing support were even Wei Ru Xue and Su Yan, something Zhou Yun truly hadn’t expected.

Clearly, the two of them had probably been poisoned by Litai Media’s outlets in the past as well.
