I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 499: Chapter 498: A Gift of Calligraphy

”Flower-Pinning Small楷?” Beisitian raised an eyebrow.

”Yes, yes, exactly this.” Ma Sanqiang thought Beisitian’s level was quite impressive, that she knew such a complex name; he had remembered it several times before finally forgetting it.

Beisitian was greatly surprised, as Wei Xiansan is Wei Yuanqing. Both Wei Yuanqing and Wu Yuekai are quite famous in literary circles, their calligraphy is admired by many, and she had thought if it was from these two, she might be able to get a piece for herself. Even if it was someone else’s work, she could ask these two to help her obtain it. Little did she expect that this Mr. Du would also be interested in her work.

However, her work was Flower-Pinning Small楷, while Wei Yuanqing’s was Wild Cursive, styles poles apart. It wasn’t that Du Dingwei couldn’t like Small楷 just because he liked Cursive Script; just that Flower-Pinning Small楷 was more favored by women, and if it was from a famous calligrapher, it was certainly worth collecting. But she wasn’t famous at all.

Though confused, since it was her and Wei Yuanqing’s calligraphy, it was manageable. She then smiled, ”Mr. Ma, thank you for coming all this way; I’ll bring these two’s calligraphy to visit Mr. Du.”

Ma Sanqiang hurriedly waved his hand, ”I should be thanking you; such a small favor involves so many twists, how can I accept your thanks?”

After Ma Sanqiang left, Qin Fengwang asked, ”Xiao Bei, you sounded so certain, where do you plan to get these two’s calligraphy from?”

Qin Fengwang, though not skilled in calligraphy, was still acquainted with matters in this circle; during those times, educated people were respected.

Beisitian smiled, ”I happen to know someone; I can ask them.” She spoke vaguely, not to hide anything, but there was no need to explain further. She certainly couldn’t just laugh and tell Qin Fengwang that it was her calligraphy Mr. Du wanted.

That would show a lack in both intelligence and emotional quotient, so better to say nothing.

After work, Beisitian went to visit the Wei Family; she was always personally received by Wei Yuanqing, unless he wasn’t there, then Changsun Wei Zhongyuan would host, as in the Wei Family, the weight of the eldest son was less compared to that of the eldest grandson due to abilities.

Beisitian explained her purpose, and Wei Yuanqing, without hesitation, took up his brush to write. Just a piece of calligraphy, if Beisitian wanted it, how could he not give it?

”By the way, weren’t you planning to open a calligraphy and painting gallery? Has it opened?” Wei Yuanqing was pleased to build a good relationship with Beisitian in such trivial matters, hence asked proactively.

”I’m still looking for a place; in the Capital City, finding a spot is really not easy.” Beisitian smiled.

”Alright, if you open it, you must let me know; I’ll come to support!” Wei Yuanqing said.

”I will surely invite you, having you there will bring a whole different weight to my little store.”

Beisitian’s words brought great joy to Wei Yuanqing in his old age; he could tell Beisitian truly believed so.

Having prepared everything, Beisitian went to visit Du Dingwei after work the next day. Accompanied by Ma Sanqiang, as he wasn’t assured about Beisitian going there alone, afraid that Du Dingwei’s bad temper would upset Doctor Bei.

Du Dingwei was a fat and dark old man; people often said money couldn’t buy thinness in old age, but he would say when he was young, he couldn’t even eat enough; now that life was finally good, must he diet?

On his round face grew a beard, and on his nose perched a pair of frameless round glasses. If he donned a robe and an abacus in his hands, he’d be just like an accountant.

Suppressing her amusement, Beisitian presented her gift, ”A small token from a junior, hoping Mr. Du would accept it.”

Du Dingwei adjusted his glasses, glanced at Beisitian, and then unfolded one of the pieces of calligraphy. At the moment he saw it, he confirmed it was the authentic work of Wei Xiansan!

Speaking of Wei Xiansan, he is a mysterious figure in literary circles; very few people have met him, and his personal information seldom circulates because his unique Wild Cursive is bold yet reveals the vicissitudes of life, making viewers often sigh spontaneously.

Wei Xiansan’s calligraphy is no less than Mr. Wu’s, but due to his scarce information, he isn’t as famous as Mr. Wu.

Du Dingwei had wanted Wei Xiansan’s calligraphy partly to challenge Beisitian, since eight in ten people seeking stories were amusing him; he hadn’t expected to be unfazed at all. Plus, he genuinely loved Wei Xiansan’s work.

These weren’t what surprised Du Dingwei the most; the most startling was the content above.

The words written above read, ”Do not lament the late days of life; the clouds linger in the sky and everywhere!”, with the header: A gift to Du Dingwei and the signature: Wei Xiansan.

This was actually a calligraphy piece specially written for Du Dingwei!

Du Dingwei trembled holding this calligraphy, wondering what deserved such a gift from Wei Xiansan!

No, no, this wasn’t his virtue or ability, but the capability of this young lady before him; she could actually persuade Wei Xiansan to gift her calligraphy!

Du Dingwei’s stunned expression confused Ma Sanqiang, who had known Du Dingwei for decades and had never seen such an expression on this old fox’s face.

Du Dingwei gently placed Wei Yuanqing’s calligraphy on the table, planning to get it mounted and hung on the wall the next day, both for beauty and prestige!

Suppressing his excitement, Du Dingwei unfolded the other calligraphy, which similarly presented extraordinary surprises.

The header wrote: A gift to Du Dingwei, and the content read, ”Midlife fondness for the way, settling near the southern mountains. Alone for joy at times, triumph known only to oneself. Journey to the end of waters, sitting watching clouds rise. Occasionally meeting a forest elder, engaging in endless laughter.”

The beautiful Flower-Pinning Small楷 made Du Dingwei nod repeatedly. The artist, who’s recently gained some fame in the circle, was said to be very young, yet wrote with maturity and enclosed a realm that one would believe the artist was seventy or eighty years old!

This isn’t about age, but a mindset’s realm.

The final signature was Beisitian.

This name indeed sounded very young!

With these two pieces of calligraphy, Du Dingwei was in great delight, feeling his beard even curled up. He warmly entertained Beisitian, asking her what she wanted to know.

Beisitian frankly expressed her curiosity about that magical experience, and Du Dingwei knew Beisitian wasn’t here to entertain him, thus narrating more meticulously and seriously.

At that time, the patients he treated were an elderly couple, temporarily found to fill urgent needs, as the military doctors then had all died in battle.

Du Dingwei began recounting his encounter with those two elderly people, his eyes full of reminiscence. At that time, he was young, could still storm and charge on the battlefield, whereas now, he was nearing old age, and perhaps, that elderly couple had already passed away.
