I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 497: Chapter 496: Clues

The door is a wooden panel door, with a structure like most office doors, the upper part is divided into four panes of glass. The angle of the person hiding cannot be seen from the hallway, but Beisitian’s position happens to allow her to see through the glass on the other side.

Beisitian dared not show too much. She squinted her eyes to carefully identify the person; judging by the figure, it should be a man, but the appearance was unclear.

In the hallway, Zheng Lulu’s face was marked by stubbornness. Her tears flowed down her cheeks, but she bit her lip, refusing to make a sound. Even so, she hated her own lack of courage. Not acknowledging him is one thing; what’s there to cry about? She had managed to get by all these years without him!

Zheng Lulu didn’t want to say anything more, so she turned and left.

Once Zheng Lulu left, the person hiding behind the door also turned to leave. In that moment of turning, Beisitian finally saw the person’s appearance clearly.

It’s Zhao Yilun!

The man from the surgery department, admired by most women.

Beisitian could tell that he was definitely not there by coincidence; he was listening deliberately. Was it targeted at Zheng Qiwai?

She suddenly recalled that Zheng Qiwai had once warned her to be careful of Zhao Yilun; that warning now seemed more complex than imagined.

Beisitian slowly stood up and pressed the elevator button. Just then, Zheng Lulu also walked briskly over. Seeing Beisitian, the tears she had tried so hard to stop flowed again.

But since this was a hospital, Zheng Lulu didn’t want to be a laughingstock, nor did she want Zheng Qiwai to enjoy the spectacle. Even more, she couldn’t let him think that she and her mother couldn’t manage without him!

Beisitian didn’t say anything either. They both entered the elevator and went downstairs together.

When they walked out of the surgery building, Zheng Lulu had already composed her emotions well, though she spoke much less than usual, looking rather downcast.

”Perhaps it’s better this way; at least now I’ve given up hope and won’t hold onto even the slightest bit anymore.” Zheng Lulu said in a low voice.

Zheng Lulu’s mood was quite complicated at this point. Although she wasn’t one with exceptionally strong pride, today’s events did hit her self-esteem.

Zheng Lulu had just started her internship. Her family only had a mother, plagued by illness. The entire family relied on her mother making paper boxes and her working part-time to earn money. She had finally graduated and gotten a formal job, but she still had to intern for six months, during which there would be no paycheck. She didn’t want to accept aid from relatives as she had reached her limit.

Her current situation, seeking out Zheng Qiwai, felt akin to chasing after wealth, at least that’s how Zheng Lulu felt. It made her heartache, but her mother was filled with unresolved emotions; no amount of medicine could help, her only wish was to see her son once.

Zheng Lulu was still a young woman and could not entirely understand a mother’s heart; however, she witnessed her mother’s condition and couldn’t bear it, which is why she reached out to Zheng Qiwai before she earned her own living.

Beisitian didn’t tell Zheng Lulu about Zhao Yilun’s matter and only offered a few quiet words of comfort.

Zheng Lulu pulled at the corners of her mouth, unable to smile when she thought of explaining to her mother. She sighed and left the Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic.

There was a one-and-a-half-hour break at noon. Beisitian now went home for meals, though it was a bit further away, but there was someone to pick and drop her—the person was named Chen Jinliang, Luo Xudong’s orderly.

”Sister-in-law, is everything alright?”

Compared to others, Chen Jinliang was not very tall. He had a big nose and small eyes, with a smile always at the corners of his mouth. When he smiled, his eyes squinted into slits, quite amusing.

As an orderly, he was skillful and very alert, so when Beisitian was seven or eight minutes late, Chen Jinliang asked an extra question.

”Nothing much, just had a patient leave.” Beisitian smiled slightly.

Seeing no abnormality in Beisitian, Chen Jinliang focused on driving.

”Let’s go to the Old Master’s place today,” said Beisitian.

After Zheng Lulu left, Beisitian had called home to say she wasn’t returning for lunch. Mrs. Qin knew she was going to General Wu’s, so she was at ease.

”Alright!” Chen Jinliang replied, turning at the intersection towards Wu Yuekai’s place.

Chen Jinliang stayed there at noon until the afternoon when he delivered Beisitian back, thus concluding his duty.

Beisitian visited Wu Yuekai, while Li Xuejun entertained Chen Jinliang, as Li Xuejun’s military rank was much higher than Chen Jinliang’s.

Chen Jinliang was very respectful towards Old General Wu. He had always thought that Wu Yuekai treated them kindly because of Vice Commander Luo, but from talking to Li Xuejun, he was astonished to find out that Wu Yuekai cared for Beisitian as if she were his own family member.

This made him reassess this sister-in-law; she was not just an ordinary military spouse or military doctor, and it seemed he needed to be more attentive.

Wu Yuekai saw Beisitian coming over at that time and knew she had matters to discuss. He had the staff prepare food first.

”Old Master, can you check into this Zhao Yilun person?” Beisitian asked, recounting the day’s events, as well as the prior warning from Zheng Qiwai to Wu Yuekai.

”Zheng Qiwai is indeed from the Zheng Family, which used to be a Traditional Chinese Medicine family like the Tian Family. It’s said they even had a Mystic Doctor long ago. During that tumultuous period, like many families, they suffered. To preserve their bloodline, they sold their house cheaply and the whole family left Beijing.”

Wu Yuekai took a sip of water and continued, ”Zheng Qiwai is definitely a member of the Zheng Family. After being separated from his family, no one knew his whereabouts for nearly six years, nor what he did during those years. When he reappeared, he made a sensational impact at an academic exchange, quickly entered the Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute, and within two or three years became an associate professor there. Now, he should be a professor.”

”As for his actual skills, I haven’t seen it yet,” said Beisitian.

”Rumor has it that it’s based on genuine talent. After all, people at academic conferences aren’t fools. Although this person’s origin is clean, he must have experienced something during those lost years, not to mention he even knows Bei Jiale. If such a person must be wary of Zhao Yilun, it shows that Zhao Yilun is also complicated,” Wu Yuekai said.

Wu Yuekai paid attention to Zhao Yilun, advising Beisitian not to act rashly and to investigate further first.

Beisitian nodded, agreeing with this idea.

”Let’s eat first. After dinner, take a break before going back to work,” said Wu Yuekai.

Although there had been a warning from Zheng Qiwai, Beisitian had long been distrustful of him; how could she pay much attention to what he said? Today, after what she personally witnessed, she felt Zhao Yilun might not be simple either.

Beisitian gently rubbed her belly. As a mother, she would absolutely not allow her unborn child to feel threatened.

As they ate, Wu Yuekai commented, ”Girl, you should eat less. You’re not even three months yet, but your belly looks big.”

Beisitian was taken aback.
