Chapter 606: Chapter 605: Let Me Do the Testing

”Is your manpower so short that you’ve come to this?”

As he followed Walter and Intagra to the reception room, Fang Zheng couldn’t help expressing his surprise. He remembered organizations like Hellsing that were highly secretive by nature, and in Fang Zheng’s view, aside from ”exotic heroes” like himself, those who joined Hellsing were likely vetted through strict political loyalty checks to ensure their allegiance to their nation. But now... what’s with hiring a bunch of mercenaries?

At any rate, Fang Zheng knew he wouldn’t entrust the Heavenly Dao Palace to a bunch of people who cared for nothing but money.

”At present, we are indeed a little short-handed, but these are not ordinary mercenaries,”

Walking ahead of Fang Zheng, Walter replied with a smile.

”They’re professional mercenaries. Once the contract is signed and they’re paid, they will absolutely not betray.”

”...Alright then, as long as you’re happy,” Fang Zheng thought about it and decided not to make a fuss. After all, he was also a ”mercenary”, and there wasn’t much difference between him and the others in terms of position. Since neither Integra nor Walter seemed to find anything inappropriate, he saw no need to waste his breath over it.

Soon, under Walter’s guidance, they arrived in the main floor’s hallway, and it was at this moment that they all heard the noise coming from a half-open door nearby.

”Captain Bernadotte, what on earth is going on?”

”Is the war going to start in London? When did we become the guards of the wealthy? Who among the rich wants to create a private army or something?”

”No, no, no...”

Amidst these voices, a somewhat lazy voice rang out.

”Although I’m not sure what’s happening either, it seems our job is to exterminate monsters.”

”Exterminate monsters?”

Hearing this response, the other mercenaries appeared to be quite astonished.

”In this day and age, does anyone still believe in that?”

”Hahaha, Captain, have you lost your mind? Do you actually believe such nonsense?”

”It’s true.”

While the mercenaries in the reception room were making a racket, the group reached the door of the room, and then, Fang Zheng saw Integra stride forward, push open the door, and walk in while she looked coldly at the mercenaries before her.

”Your enemies are vampires who gain immortality by drinking blood. Throwing garlic and holy water at them, driving stakes through their hearts, chopping off their heads, burning their bodies to ashes and scattering them at a crossroads—this is our job———for more details, refer to fairy tale books.”

”..........”

Faced with Integra’s remarks, the mercenaries in the room were all stunned, and Fang Zheng couldn’t help but twitch in the corner of his mouth.

This young lady, besides being able to talk people to death, surely has impressive skills.

”That’s absurd!”

Soon, the mercenaries came to their senses.

”Vampires do not exist in this world......”

”It’s just that you don’t know.”

Integra interrupted them with a sneer.

”No, to be correct, you’re not allowed to know. Our Royal National Church Knights, Hellsing, was established a hundred years ago and has always operated in secrecy to fight against vampires. If you’re unwilling to believe, then witness it for yourselves!”

With that said, Integra suddenly raised her hand, pointing to a corner of the room.

”...That is your enemy, the vampire!!”

Did Integra really bring out Alucard to scare people?

Startled by Integra’s words, Fang Zheng quickly turned his head to look in the direction Integra was pointing and then saw, standing in a corner of the reception room, a uniformed individual with an awkward smile... Seras...

”......”

Young lady, you haven’t taken the wrong medication, have you?

Watching Seras stand in the corner, leaning against the wall with a forced grin, Fang Zheng sighed and massaged his forehead. Even bringing a ghoul would have been more intimidating than this naïve and silly policewoman!

”A vampire?”

The mercenaries seemed to share Fang Zheng’s thoughts as the Mercenary Captain with a cowboy hat and a long braid got up and approached Seras to scrutinize her. Confronted by the Mercenary Captain’s probing, Seras responded with a tentative smile, greeting him.

”H-hi...”

”Miss, are you a vampire?”

”Well...”

Clearly, even Seras herself was conflicted about how to answer this question. In the end, she nodded.

”Well... sort of.”

”....Hahahaha!”

As soon as Seras finished speaking, the mercenaries burst into laughter. Fang Zheng simply shrugged; it was a normal reaction, after all, considering Seras looked like the stereotypical busty yet brainless type, nothing like the ferocious vampires depicted in various films and legends.

”Master Integra... as expected, they’re laughing at us...”

Hearing the mercenaries’ laughter, Seras also turned beet red—this was simply like a humiliation PLAY!

”Then let’s show them the evidence.”

Compared to Seras, who felt as if she were being publicly executed, Intagura remained calm—of course, Fang Zheng suspected that was because it wasn’t her being embarrassed.

”Okay, okay...”

Hearing Intagura’s request, Seras chuckled nervously, then she looked at the mercenaries in front of her and snapped her fingers.

”Please do!”

”...Hahahaha!”

Watching the dorky policewoman in front of him, the mercenary burst into loud laughter, then he spread his arms and lunged toward Seras.

”If the young lady here is a vampire, then I must be Frankenstein!”

Although the Mercenary Captain’s movements appeared quite casual, Fang Zheng could tell that his attack had sealed off all of Seras’s possible escape routes from above, below, left, and right. In other words, if this dorky policewoman had been a regular human, she would have likely been directly caught in the Mercenary Captain’s arms, with no chance of escape.

However, sadly for him, Seras indeed was not human.

Facing the Mercenary Captain’s charge, Seras suddenly dashed to the side and extended her hand, flicking her finger directly at the Mercenary Captain’s forehead, sending him reeling backward. Before the Mercenary Captain could react, Seras flicked him twice more in rapid succession, and with a scream, the unfortunate Mercenary Captain fell to the ground, spinning, as blood streamed from his forehead.

”Captain!”

Witnessing this scene, the other mercenaries were shocked and quickly rushed to their captain’s side to help him up.

”Is this guy a monster?”

At this moment, the Mercenary Captain no longer looked down on Seras but instead stared at her with an indescribable terror in his eyes.

”I completely couldn’t see her movements, nor could I sense her presence. It was just a flick, but I felt like my head was going to split open! Is this person... really a vampire?”

”That’s right.”

Just then, another figure sounded, followed by Alucard emerging from within the wall. Seeing his arrival, the mercenaries immediately shuddered... Both Alucard’s appearance and his entrance were far more intimidating than that of the busty, dimwitted policewoman.

”Although she’s just a lowly vampire among vampires, she’s a bona fide vampire.”

As he said this, Alucard glanced at the people, and then let out a cold laugh.

”What a bunch of cowards. Are these people really of any use?”

Hearing Alucard’s complaint, Intagura glanced at him, while Walter quickly came over as well.

”I’m very sorry, Young Lady, I tried to stop him...”

”These are the people supposed to protect my stronghold.”

Alucard stared coldly at the mercenaries before him.

”So, I wanted to see for myself what kind of people they are... What do you think, Fang Zheng?”

”Hmm?”

Hearing Alucard’s question, Fang Zheng stepped forward from behind, narrowing his eyes as he scrutinized the group of mercenaries.

”Their skills are fine, but the problem is, when fighting monsters, relying solely on skill and weaponry is useless.”

”Oh?”

Alucard’s lips curled slightly as he turned his head to look at Fang Zheng.

”So, what then?”

”Miss Intagura.”

Fang Zheng didn’t respond immediately but instead turned to look at Intagura.

”If you don’t mind, I would like to test these mercenaries. May I?”

”This...”

Facing Fang Zheng’s request, Intagura paused for a moment, then nodded her head. fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

”Of course, there’s no problem. But what exactly do you want to test them for?”

”Willpower.”

Fang Zheng’s mouth curved slightly as he extended a finger.

”What’s most important for humans when facing monsters isn’t skill, strength, or weapons, but willpower. They will instinctively feel that they are facing an unbeatable creature, and their bodies will choose to flee rather than fight. For now, their strength and skills are not within my scope of testing, but I want to see how resolute their willpower is. To what extent can they hold up against those creatures?”

”Oh?”

Upon hearing this, Intagura raised her eyebrows with interest. She understood that what Fang Zheng said made sense, but the problem was that willpower is difficult to gauge. Although it can be tempered through extreme sports or rigorous training, as Fang Zheng mentioned, whether this tempered will can overcome the innate human fear and trepidation toward unknown, powerful beings remained to be seen.

But did Fang Zheng have a way to judge this? Thinking this, Intagura quickly agreed by nodding.

”Of course, there’s no problem.”
