Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 100: Chapter 7, Part 1: The Court Decides — To Kill or to Keep

On the first day after the ceasefire, Thebes was quiet in a way that took some getting used to.

No war horns. No battle cries. Even the hammers of the men taking down the palisades struck more softly than before, as if the whole city were holding its breath to be sure the quiet was real. The quiet had a sound of its own — the sound of men walking without hurry, of doors standing open, of water moving in the channel again. On the open ground to the east and the north, the men who had laid down their arms crouched in stretches, waiting to be dealt with. The soldiers of the army camp south of the city had opened their own gates; their blades were sheathed, and they stood in two rows outside the surrender point — not as guards, but as guides. When a column of surrendered men came up, the soldiers pointed out the registering tables and the porridge queues with the same gestures they had once used to point out the gates of a camp under attack. The three thousand of the river bend were handled the same way: their weapons piled on the flats, the men crouching along the water’s edge.

Horenheb left at the first grey of dawn, before the city had fully woken, so that the going would be the lighter for everyone. He had said his goodbyes the night before, in the camp, without ceremony — a hand on the old centurion’s shoulder, a word to the cooks about the porridge, nothing more. The cooks had risen before him and pressed two flatbreads into his saddlebag while it was still dark, still warm; he had said nothing about them, and they had not asked him to.

He stood on the slope of the army camp, behind him two hundred riders and thirty craftsmen. The old centurion stood at his horse’s head and said, low: ”General — with you gone, if these thousands of surrendered men should turn restless...”

”They will not.” Horenheb said. ”A man who has surrendered recognizes only three things: the blade, the bowl, and the road. The blades are taken in; the bowls are filled; the road is spread flat before them. Who would turn back?” He swung into the saddle. ”And besides — you are staying. You held the western line for twenty years; can you not hold one surrender point?”

”I can hold it.” The old centurion said. He had said the same words thirty years before, when the western line was first given into his hands; the words had worn smooth with use, and they had never once failed him.

”Then it is settled.” Horenheb rode forward. After a few paces he turned and shouted down the slope: ”Hear me, all of you! I, Horenheb, ride north today. All matters of the south are in the hands of the old centurion and the Chief Builder. Whoever disturbs this ceasefire — when I return, he will be the first I deal with!”

The two hundred riders answered as one voice. The hoofbeats rose, like thunder rolling away — north, and north again — and the dust of their going hung over the road long after the last horse was out of sight. On the slope, the king’s banner snapped in the morning light; it had hung over that camp through the whole war, and it would hang over whatever the camp became next.

”The general has gone north.” A surrendered man asked, low. ”Is there... fighting in the north too?”

”Fighting or not,” the soldier escorting him said, ”with the general there, the north cannot fall. Do your work steadily, and ask fewer questions about the rest.”

In the army camp south of the city, on the first day after Horenheb’s departure, the old centurion set new rules.

The blades all went into the stores; only the sentries kept theirs. The soldiers were divided into two shifts: one guarded the camp, one worked — helping to take down the camps, clear the ground, and haul the timber. On the first day a soldier grumbled: ”Soldiers — doing mud-brick work?” The old centurion heard him and said, in the flat voice he used for orders that were not open to argument: ”You think this is mud-brick work? This is preparing the ground for the war ahead. The war in the north can start any day. When it does, would you rather live in a camp with the wind whistling through every wall — or in a city built square and tight?”

The soldier stopped grumbling. That same afternoon he joined the work-gang and carried palisade timber for the rest of the day; by evening his hands were blistered in places they had not been blistered in years, and he held them out at supper, looking at them as if they belonged to someone else.

”The general said,” the old centurion told the whole camp, ”that in thirty years on the western line he learned one thing: idle soldiers rot a camp; busy soldiers hold it up. The war has stopped; the work must not.”

On the ten towers south of the city, the signal smoke was still lit every day — one column, straight up, the oldest language the camp knew. One smoke, one day of peace. Through the whole month, the smoke had not missed a single day. The tower guards had learned to read one another’s columns of smoke the way other men read letters; a column that failed to rise at its appointed hour would have brought riders out within the day.

”This smoke,” a tower guard said, ”is not for the city’s sake anymore. It is for the north — so the general knows the south is standing steady.”

Only around the great temple of Amun, one thing had been added: a ring of men.

Soldiers of the king’s army stood around the temple, one every ten paces, facing outward, blades sheathed. Lu Zhu had had two sentry posts set below the temple steps — lamps by night, reliefs by day — and he had chosen the men for them himself, men who understood that a guard post can be a kind of courtesy. He said: ”This ring is not to cage him in. It is so that the men inside know the outside is settled — and so the men outside know the man inside will not run.”

”Chief Builder,” the squad leader at the gate asked, ”how long must we hold this watch?”

”Until the reply comes from the new capital.” Lu Zhu said. ”Ten days, twenty — however long it takes, we hold this watch. This temple is the most important door in all Egypt now. Inside that door is the root of four months of war. Outside it is every day that is left to live. The men of the watch had begun to think of the door that way themselves, and they stood a little straighter at their posts than the duty required. The men of the watch had begun to think of the door that way themselves, and they stood a little straighter at their posts than the duty required.”

The laying down of arms on the river flats was finished before noon.

Blade, spear, bow, arrow — the weapons of three thousand men, piece by piece, piled into a small mountain. When the last of the pile was being made, an elderly believer undid the short knife at his belt and weighed it in his hand. The mountain was taller than a man by the time the piling was done, and the men who had built it stood back from it, as if it might fall on them. He walked to the mountain of blades — and did not throw the knife. He laid it down flat, settled it straight, the way a man sets a thing down in the place it belongs, stepped back one pace, and bowed. Around him the soldiers of the king’s army had gone still, watching an old man give his knife back to the god it had served.

”This is my family’s knife.” He said. ”It followed me for twenty years. For the first ten, it served a son who became a soldier; since then, it has served the god.” He paused. ”I hand over the knife. Myself — I want to go back to my village.”

”Go back.” The warden keeping the register said. ”Which village?”

”Reed Village, in Upper Egypt.”

”Reed Village.” The warden wrote it down and said. ”The people of your village are in the city, in the Haven of Settled Lives. We will arrange a meeting for you. When the reply from the new capital comes down, all who wish to return home will be released.”

The old believer stood still a moment. ”The people of Reed Village... are still alive?”

”Alive.” The warden said. ”All four months of it. This city has been keeping your homes for you.”

The old believer said nothing. He turned to face the river and stood for a long time, the way a man stands when the thing he has carried for months is suddenly put down. He had stood on this bank four months before, when the army went out; the bank had been crowded with torches then. The river wind lifted his grey hair and let it fall. After a while he said, low: ”God. Thank you — for keeping them.”

On the first night, nine lamps burned inside the great temple.

They were not lit from outside. The man in the white robe had lit them, one by one, with the old priests — nine flames for nine men, each flame tended by the hands that had tended the temple’s lamps in the years before the war. Where the lamps multiplied, the temple took on a living air. The temple door stood shut; the light leaking through the crack of the door ran like a thread of extreme fineness, tying temple and city lightly together.

A soldier on the night patrol passed and glanced at the crack. From inside came the sound of chanting, low, the words indistinguishable — only a soft, even humming, like a swarm of bees that did not fly at night. The soldier stood a moment longer than he needed to, and then moved on; the humming followed him a little way down the lane.

”They are chanting.” The soldier said.

”Let them chant.” The old soldier beside him said. ”When it is finished, the sky will be light.”

The people of the city, that day, had more to say than usual.

The date-seller had set up early. His stall was barely open before the crowd gathered around it, talking all at once. Some said the High Priest deserved death; some said he deserved a thousand deaths; some said that in the end he had thought to shield his believers, and that counted as a man’s act. The arguments ran round and round the date stall, fed by the heat of four months, and no argument could finish another. When the arguing was at its height, a white-haired old man spat out a date stone and said: ”Enough, all of you. Kill him — will the dead of these four months come back? They will not. Keep him alive, and anyone who thinks of rising again will look first at the man in that temple — thirty thousand went out, and one man came back in. That chills the heart more than any execution.”

”That old man has the right of it,” someone agreed. ”An execution is the work of one stroke. Shutting him in the temple to sit out his years in the dark — that is the true punishment.”

”Punishment or not,” the old man said, ”I will tell you what I know: where mercy is possible, show mercy. A settled life is worth more than anything else.”

The words spread through the crowd like a bowl of warm water, slowly quenching the morning’s heat. The crowd broke up slowly, the way crowds do when the argument has gone out of them, and the date-seller was left to his stall.

At the surrender point, the days had taken on a regular shape.

In the morning, the old sergeant called the roll, standing on the high ground of the surrender point with his voice carrying to the back of the queues. In the forenoon, the enrolled teams went to work — tearing down the camps, clearing the ground, hauling timber to the yard. At noon, the meal: the ten cauldrons served porridge and flatbread by turns. In the afternoon, work again. Before dark, the work stopped and the work-tallies were notched. At night, a few fires were lit on the open ground outside the surrender point, and the men sat around them, talking, warming their hands, waiting for sleep to come.

”This life,” a surrendered man said, ”is a hundred times better than the camp.”

”Better, nothing.” The man beside him said. ”It is a mouthful of food and a stretch of work.”

”A mouthful of food and a stretch of work,” a third man put in, ”what more do you want? In half a year in that camp, those two things were what I begged for and never got.”

Kamon’s work-teams took seven days to take apart the ground of the East Camp.

Everything that came down was sorted to its place: palisade timber — the straight pieces to the lumber yard, the crooked ones split for firewood; wagons — mended where they could be mended, and the mended ones sent to haul timber; felt and tarpaulin — patched, and sent in full to the Haven of Settled Lives. A-Ka’s third team was given the rebel arrow-platforms to take down. He stood on one of the platforms, hammering, stroke after stroke, and when it was down he said: ”This platform shot how many arrows at us? Now it is taken apart — and not one brick of it wasted.”

”A-Ka,” the team leader called from below, ”do not hammer out your anger. Bricks are dead things.”

”I know.” A-Ka said. ”The bricks are dead. I am letting out four months’ breath for myself.”

In the hospital, the wounded grew fewer day by day.

The badly wounded could sit up now; the lightly wounded had all returned to their teams. The beds emptied slowly, and every empty bed was swept and aired the same morning, ready for whoever came next. The beds emptied slowly, and every empty bed was swept and aired the same morning, ready for whoever came next. Imset made a round of the wards every day, and when he came to Panhesy’s room he always stood a little longer. Panhesy’s shoulder healed slowly — old wound on new, the flesh grudging. But he could get out of bed now, and walk along the wall from his door to the courtyard door and back, a few more steps each day.

”Walk slowly.” Neht said. ”When you walk well, you leave the hospital. And when you leave, report to the lumber yard.”

”This arm of mine,” Panhesy said, ”can it still swing a hammer?”

”It cannot swing a hammer,” Neht said. ”But it can hold a level, and a measuring cord, and oversee a worksite. General Horenheb has said it: you have commanded soldiers, and you can read the shape of a field. From now on, on the worksites, you will be given a stretch to manage.”

Panhesy said nothing. He walked to his door and looked out. In the yard, workers carried the wounded in and out; beyond the wall, from far off, came the sound of ramming.

”A stretch to manage.” He said, low. ”Very well. For four months I managed camps. From now on, I will manage a stretch of wall.”

Shafi’s medicine ledger, these days, was quietly changing its face. The change had not been ordered by anyone; it had happened the way a river changes its course — by the slow pressure of the days.

The columns of the war account grew shorter every day; the newly opened columns grew longer: the children’s coughs in the Haven, the old wounds of the surrendered being nursed back, the cold-protection medicines for the men on the road home, and the chills that swept the whole city as winter settled in. She laid the old war account and the new peacetime account side by side and said to Imset: ”Teacher, look. The war is over, and the account has changed its face by itself.”

”Accounts follow people.” Imset said. ”What wars people fight, the account records. Now the people are not fighting; the account records living.” He turned the new pages. ”The coughs in the shelter grounds are fewer this month. Nefer has been strict about the blankets, and the water is boiled. This account of yours — it is their days.”

”When the days are good, the account is light.” Shafi said. ”I would be glad to see this account grow thinner every month.”

”Thin is good.” Imset said. ”But a thin account still has to be kept every day. The rules in your book are exactly what should be put into practice, one by one, in these days of peace.”

”They are in practice.” Shafi said. ”The warning lines, the restocking periods, the damp-proof racks — not one of them has been let go.”

In the Haven of Settled Lives, Dawn was one month old — the first child of the war, and the whole grounds had kept count of the days for her.

On the day of the full month, Nefer had the kitchen steam a pot of date cakes. The women all came to look at the child, each with a word of praise. Sister Wei held her and said: ”This girl’s features have opened out. As pretty as her mother.”

”And how she eats!” The mother laughed from the side. ”When she cries, half the street hears it.”

”Eating well is good.” Nefer said. ”It means this city can feed its people.” She looked out. ”Look at the whole shelter grounds — the war over, the ones who stayed have set up households. From now on, this city will have more and more children.”

”More and more is good.” Sister Wei said. ”When the children multiply, the days have a future to them.”

Meru’s boats, these days, were busier than they had been during the war.

The river was open, and the guild’s boats came one after another, from the West Bank to the beach, from the beach to the new capital. The cargoes were varied now: grain, medicine, lime, timber, felt, cloth, salt. Meru had had the river map framed and hung it on the old post of the West Bank dock-house. Every boatman who came in to settle his accounts looked at it — on the map, one straight river, clean and open.

”Boss,” someone asked, ”why does the map have no more routes on it?”

”The routes are in men’s hearts.” Meru said. ”When the river is peaceful, the map grows simple. From now on, this river is the great road of all Egypt.” He knocked out his pipe. ”The guild’s real work is only beginning.”

Meru came into the city to settle accounts on the tenth day after the ceasefire, walking up from the beach with his ledger under his arm and the river mud already dry on his sandals.

The two accountants sat down at one table again. This time the table held no wartime cargo lists — it held the full account of four months: how many trips the south line had run, how much grain the north line had advanced, how many boatloads of medicine had crossed, how much had been lost to spoilage. Entry by entry, from the first day of the siege to this day of the ceasefire. The matching took the two men most of the afternoon, and neither hurried — an account matched in haste is an account that will have to be matched again.

”Merchant Meru,” Mery said, ”in four months, your guild’s boats ran more than three hundred trips.”

”More than three hundred.” Meru clicked his tongue. ”I reckon several dozen of them were wasted — wrong channel, turn back, do it over.”

”The wasted ones are recorded too.” Mery said. ”The account shows them plainly. Wasted roads are the detours that will not have to be walked again.” He pushed the ledger across. ”Look at the last page.”

Meru leaned over. On the last page, Mery had written several lines: the guild’s wartime transport — grain, medicine, timber — so much in all; losses, so much; balance, so much. Under it, in smaller script, one line: ”This account ends with the war, and begins with the peace.”

”Ends with the war, begins with the peace.” Meru read it twice and laughed. ”Good. My trade is now entered on the national account.” He took out his pipe and knocked it against the corner of the table. ”From now on, the guild sails as before — but the accounts are kept this way. Your account, Mery, is the most trusted in Egypt. From now on, my trader’s books hang from your line.”

”They hang.” Mery said. ”Where the grain is, the account is; where the account is, the peace is.”

”That,” Meru said, ”sounds like an official speaking.”

”It does not.” Mery said. ”It sounds like a granary keeper. A man who keeps granaries believes exactly this.”

That day, Shunzi’s storm-lantern was hung from the beam of the dock-house, in the place of honor beside the door, where every man coming in to settle his accounts would see it.

The lamp had been with him through four months. In the siege, when the boats ran by night, it had been everything. It had saved six boats, that lamp. Now the river was peaceful, and night sailing no longer needed to dodge patrols, and the storm-lantern was needed less and less. Shunzi wiped the glass three times over, and hung it from the beam of the dock-house, side by side with the framed river map.

”Why hang it up?” A boatman asked. ”Do you not need it for unloading at night?”

”I do.” Shunzi said. ”I have a new lamp. This old one hangs here as a keepsake.” He looked up at it. ”From now on, when anyone asks how the river was crossed in those four months — let them look at this lamp. It does not burn now. But it lit the darkest road.”

”The lad talks well now.” The boatman said.

”I learned it from the boss.” Shunzi said. ”The boss says things are like people: when a thing has done its share of work, it deserves a settled place.”

Meru heard from the bow and laughed: ”Talkative as ever. Off with you — go and count the cargo!”

”Right away!” Shunzi ran. The old storm-lantern hung from the beam, and when the wind passed, it swayed once, as if it were still awake.

A-Tu’s boat, these days, had taken up ferrying — the most peaceful work a boat can do, and the hardest to do well.

The boat that had run through four months of fire-lines was now tied at the beach west of the gate, with a small wooden board hung on it bearing two words: Ferry. People coming and going across the river paid two copper pieces a head; men released to return to their villages crossed free. His twenty boatmen worked the pole in shifts, from dawn to dusk.

”Uncle A-Tu,” a boatman asked, ”is our boat only for this from now on?”

”Only for this.” A-Tu said. ”In the war, this boat was the third gate. Now it is the first bridge. A gate saves lives; a bridge carries daily life.” He leaned on his pole and pushed the boat steadily off the bank. ”Do not think little of this ferrying. The people on this side of the river use it to go home; the people beyond the river use it to come into the city. When the boats move, the days move.”

”And if the north starts fighting again?” The boatman asked.

”If the north truly starts fighting,” A-Tu said, ”this boat becomes a gate again.” He paused. ”But I hope it stays a bridge for the rest of its life.”

When the boat reached midstream he looked back at the city once. The banners on the city wall flew bright in the wind. The river ran under the hull with a rushing sound, as if it were slowly turning the page on these four months for the city.

Panhesy learned of the settlement of the peace later than anyone else, which was fitting in its way: he had been the last man to lay down his blade, and he was the last to hear what the blade had bought.

His shoulder was still unhealed, and he was a surrendered commander — no one made a point of telling him what was happening outside. The hospital kept its own rules about news: what a man needed for his healing, he was told; the rest could wait. Until one day, in the middle of a dressing change, Neht said, as if in passing: ”The High Priest’s petition for peace — the pharaoh has granted it. He is confined to the temple for life. The temple will not be torn down, and his believers will not be prosecuted.”

Panhesy heard it and did not move for a long time. At last he said: ”Then he... bore it all alone?”

”He bore it all alone.” Neht said.

”His body,” Panhesy said, ”how can it bear the weight of those two words — ’bearing guilt’?” He looked down at the old scar on his shoulder. ”I fought his war for four months. In the first two, I believed we could win. In the last two, I knew we could not — and I did not dare say it. And he — when did he know?”

”That you must ask him.” Neht said. ”I only mind this arm of yours.”

”The arm.” Panhesy smiled bitterly. ”What does a beaten commander need an arm for?”

”There you go again.” Neht said. ”Have you forgotten the general’s words? The western line does not lack soldiers; it lacks hands willing to take up a spade.” He finished the dressing and bound the cloth. ”This arm of yours, from now on, will dig ditches, ram earth, and mend walls. This city has more than enough work waiting for you.”

Panhesy said nothing. He turned his head to the window. The sky outside was grey-blue, grey-blue. From far off came the sound of ramming — the city’s craftsmen, mending the wall at the east gate.

”Mending walls.” He said, low. ”The walls I tore down — now it is my turn to mend them.”

By the fifteenth day, the reply had still not come.

The messengers had been gone ten days; by rights they should have arrived. But from the new capital, not a word. The people of the city did not say it aloud, but in their hearts the doubt had begun to stir. The impatient ones went to the city gate to ask: ”Has something happened to the messengers?” ”Has the court changed its mind?” ”Is this ceasefire still valid or not?”

When the questions multiplied, the chief officiant had one more line added to the peace boards: ”The reply is on the road. The ceasefire continues as before.”

Eight words. Every day someone wiped the dust off them and someone retraced the paint. By the fifteenth day, even the man who retraced the paint had begun to wonder. He retraced the eight words twice that day, as if a second coat of paint might make them truer. The chief officiant himself showed nothing. He only said: ”The court is deliberating a matter of this size — of course it is slow. If it came fast, that would be the wrong sign; it would mean the matter had not been weighed through. A decree that has been weighed through is a decree that will hold.”

”And if it does not hold?” Someone asked, low.

”If it does not hold,” the chief officiant said, ”this city goes on waiting. We waited four months. What are ten more days?”

That was what he said. But at night, the chief officiant himself stood a long time at the door of the old temple, looking north — toward the new capital, black and heavy. He knew that one sheet of decree was at this moment on the road, or in the court, holding the whole weight of Egypt’s tomorrow. Behind him the lamps of the old temple burned low; the smoke of the evening rites had long since gone. He stood until the cold worked through his robe, and then he went in.

”Come soon.” He said, low. ”Too many people in this city are waiting for the sound of one word — ’settled.’”

Inside the temple, Nekhem was waiting too.

The man in the white robe came out twice a day, for water and for grain. He took the least of both — half a bucket of water, one sheng of grain. The soldier at the gate asked him: ”There are nine men in there. Is that enough to eat?”

”The High Priest has said,” the white robe answered, ”that more than ten thousand men outside are waiting to be settled, and every mouthful of grain saved is a mouthful for them.” He paused. ”Besides — a man waiting for an answer has little appetite.”

”And how is the High Priest’s health?”

”He coughs.” The white robe said. ”But he will not take the medicine. He says it must be kept for the wounded outside.”

The soldier said no more. He watched the white robe carry the half-bucket of water inside; the temple door opened a crack, and closed. The light in the crack — one thread, very fine — was the only sign that nine men lived in the black mass of the temple, and the soldier found himself looking for it every time he passed.

At the new capital, the messengers entered the palace at night, past the gate guards who had been told to expect them, and the war ministry’s lamps burned until dawn over the two documents they had carried through ten days of road.

Ten days of road, ridden in nine and a half. Two horses, changed between them; when the man came down at the palace gate, his legs would not bend. The head of the war ministry had the war report and the petition for peace laid before the court that same night. The petition was read aloud twice; the war report three times, because the officials kept asking to hear the numbers again. The next morning, the court deliberated.

The deliberation was over one question: Nekhem — kill him, or keep him? It was the question that had hung over the palace since the first rumor of the petition came north, and every official in the hall had already chosen his side in his own chamber the night before.

Those who urged death were many. The benches of the hall had been full since before dawn, and the air was close with the heat of many bodies and many opinions. An old noble struck the table so hard that the ink-pot jumped: ”The head of the rebellion — if he is not executed, the law of the land means nothing! When he raised his army, did he think of this day?” Those beside him agreed: ”’Cleanse the court of the wicked, restore the old gods’ — those six words are the proof of treason! Keep him, and you keep a fire-seed. Some year, some month, it will burn again!” The speaker’s face was red with the heat of his own words; he had lost two sons on the walls of the south, and the hall knew it, and made allowance for it.

”A fire-seed?” Someone on the side of mercy laughed coldly. ”Do you truly take him for a fire-seed? Thirty thousand men, and hunger drove twelve thousand of them to desert. Those who remain are men who have had their lives given back to them. Light that seed again and see — who will follow him?”

”Dare you gamble on it?” The one who urged death glared. ”You are gambling the fate of the nation!”

”The one gambling the nation’s fate is you!” The one who urged mercy gave no ground. ”More than twenty cities of Upper Egypt — half of them went with him. Kill him, and will the taxes, the grain, and the labor of those twenty cities obey the king’s word after this? What will you use to make up the loss — your own salary?”

The two sides quarreled more fiercely by the moment. The civil officials and the generals of the hall divided into two camps, nearly rolling up their sleeves. The pharaoh sat above them, his finger tapping, one tap at a time, on the wood-grain of the armrest, saying nothing. He had heard both arguments before, in the privacy of his own chambers; he was listening now for the argument that would move the hall, not the one that would move him.

It was then that a man at the far end of the hall came tottering forward.

He was an old priest — one of the few priests of Amun left at the new capital, the others having gone north with the temple’s treasures or south with the rebellion. He spoke slowly, the way a man speaks when he knows he will be quoted. He bowed and said: ”Pharaoh, this old servant has not come to plead for Nekhem. This old servant has only one thing to say: the temple has been handed down for several hundred years. Its images, its scriptures, its incense — all were handed down from the hands of former kings. Nekhem is guilty; the temple is not. If the temple is destroyed for one man’s guilt, then a hundred years from now, when the people who come after ask what we have to show for it — what will we answer?”

”The temple is not guilty,” a general who urged death snorted. ”But whose silver pays for the incense burned in it?”

”If the silver is guilty,” the old priest said, ”then punish the silver. Do not tear the temple down, stone by stone.”

The two sides were about to quarrel again. The pharaoh raised a hand, and stopped them. He was silent for a long time. Then he said: ”The matter of the temple — we will decide later. Today, first, we decide the man.” The hall noted the order of the two questions, and drew from it whatever comfort it could.

When the quarrel was at its height, the head of the war ministry stepped forward, holding a war report above his head: ”Stop quarreling! Hear the war report!” Only then did the hall fall quiet — the quiet of men who have suddenly remembered that the war they had been arguing about was real, and had a shape, and was now over.

”The war report of General Horenheb,” the war minister read. ”The East Camp fell in half a day; the North Camp surrendered without a fight; the river bend laid down its arms. Twelve thousand men surrendered; all have been enrolled and await settlement. The general has already ridden north, to survey the defenses of the northern border.” He paused, and lowered his voice. ”The report carries one more line — ’The ceasefire has been granted. I beg the pharaoh to settle the matter early, so that the hearts of ten thousand may be at rest.’”

”’So that the hearts of ten thousand may be at rest.’” The four words fell on the heat of the hall like a ladle of cold water.

The hall was quiet again. Then, from a corner of the hall, someone spoke.

It was Asaf. The name went round the nearer benches in whispers — the clerk who had come through the siege itself, the one who knew.

He now served in the civil administration, and by rights the order of the day did not reach him. He had come to the capital four months before, on the same boat as the records of the siege, and he had stayed because the records had needed someone to answer for them. It was the head of the war ministry who had summoned him — the war of Thebes had run through his hands from beginning to end, and no one knew its details better. Asaf had not slept the night before the court; the dust of the road was still on his coat.

”Pharaoh,” Asaf came forward and said, his voice carrying to the back of the hall the way it had carried across the lanes of Thebes in the bad months. ”Your servant has only one sentence to say: through four months of siege, what did the people of Thebes hate most? Not Nekhem. Disorder. Whoever could stop the disorder was their benefactor.” He paused. ”Now the disorder has stopped. But it stopped because both sides could fight no more — not because either side had submitted to the other. If, at this moment, Nekhem is taken to the execution ground, what will the people of the twenty cities of Upper Egypt think? They will think only: today they execute the High Priest; tomorrow it is our turn. And then it will not be one city under siege — it will be blood in every river.”

”Then your meaning,” the pharaoh asked, ”is to let him go free?”

”Not free.” Asaf said. ”Confined to the great temple of Amun for life, not one step outside. Let him live — and let him watch: watch the new policies being raised, watch where the people’s hearts are going. This chills the old forces more than his execution would, and it sets the people’s minds more at ease.” A murmur ran through the hall, and for the first time that morning, the pharaoh’s finger stopped tapping.

The hall deliberated another round. This time, the voices urging death grew quieter, little by little.

It was at this moment that Tia stepped out, carrying a page of sheepskin. She was young to stand in the middle of a court, and she knew it; she held the page the way a messenger holds a dispatch, as if the weight of it were not hers, but carried for someone else.

She held no office; Asaf had entered her name. She stood in the middle of the hall and unrolled the sheepskin, smoothing it flat with both hands, the way she had seen the granary clerks smooth their ledgers. ”Your servant does not know the etiquette of the court — only numbers. Let this page pass before the pharaoh’s eyes.”

The sheepskin carried three rows of numbers. The first row: of the forty-two cities of Upper Egypt that had gone over to the rebellion, twenty-one — with the population and the acreage of each. The second row: the twelve thousand surrendered soldiers of Thebes; counted at five mouths to a household, the families they implicated numbered more than fifty thousand. The third row: the account of the people’s hearts in the three places — the West Bank, the new capital, and Thebes — what had been said in which street, what each village hoped for, all of it gathered on the ground, entry by entry. The entries were written in two hands, hers and Asaf’s, in the ink of four different towns; the page looked the way the country looked.

”To kill one man,” Tia said, ”is easy. But behind this page of numbers stand twenty-one cities, fifty thousand households, and the hearts of three places. One stroke of the blade, and what they will remember is not the law of the land — it is four words: ’settle accounts after autumn.’ When that day comes, the cities of Upper Egypt will not wait for the rebels to besiege them; they will close their own gates.” She paused. ”Your servant ventures one sentence: Nekhem’s guilt does not lie in whether he lives or dies. It lies in the word ’rebellion.’ Now that he cannot rebel again, a man kept in the temple shows the whole world more than a head hung on the wall — it shows that the king’s law has room, and the new policies have room.”

The hall was so quiet that the crackle of a lamp-wick could be heard, and the officials nearest the door leaned in, as if the numbers on the page might reach them better at close range.

The pharaoh looked at the page of numbers for a long time. Then he said: ”Granted. The ceasefire stands; the peace talks stand; no one is prosecuted for the past. Nekhem is confined to the great temple of Amun for life. The temple is not to be torn down. His believers are to be registered and settled.” He rose. ”Send the decree to Horenheb and to the Chief Construction Bureau: Thebes is to be handled accordingly. Settle the matters after the war quickly — the north is still waiting for its men.”

The decree was sealed that same day, in the pharaoh’s own hand, with the weight of the whole deliberation behind every character. The envoy who carried it was given twenty riders, and rode south that night, and the hoofbeats of the twenty horses were the first sound of the answer the south had been waiting fifteen days to hear.

After the court was dismissed, Asaf and Tia returned to the side-room of the civil administration, walking through the corridors in the silence that follows a great exertion. Neither spoke until the door was closed behind them.

The wicker trunk still stood at the corner of the table. It had come north with them four months before, light then, nearly empty; it had gone back and forth on the river since, and every crossing had made it heavier. Tia opened the lid; inside, the four categories of records lay stacked in order. She looked at them a while, then said: ”Asaf — today’s battle, we won.”

”We won.” Asaf said. ”But this was only the first battle. When the four great statutes go before the court, it will be ten times harder than today.”

”Ten times harder,” Tia said, ”and we still have to walk it. You saw this court today — those who urged death and those who urged mercy quarreled over interest, not over principle. From now on, our records are that ’principle.’” She patted the trunk. ”What this trunk holds is the daily lives of tens of thousands of people. When it goes before the court, it must leave those people not one word to say against it.”

”So,” Asaf said, ”the records still need polishing. When the settlement of the south is fixed, we go back to Thebes and complete the last round of research — the granary’s real accounts, the damage counts of the houses, the consumption figures of the medical houses, the old registers of the corvee. Item by item, all of it made solid.”

”Made solid,” Tia said, ”and then we come back. When that day comes, this trunk is the heaviest trunk in all Egypt.”

”The heaviest,” Asaf said, ”and the most precious.”
