Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 68: Chapter 4: The Temple Breaks Ground — Sabotage Among the Old Masters

The temple’s marker stake was off by the width of a finger — and the earth around it was new. Kamon found it wrong the evening he knocked off work.

The foundation marker stake had been set straight by his own hands when the lines were laid that morning. Now it leaned — not much, a single finger-width’s worth, the kind of lean a man would not notice unless he was looking for it. And Kamon was always looking for it. He had spent thirty years learning that a wall betrays itself in the small things first: a stake that leans, a joint that weeps, a shadow that falls where yesterday it did not.

He crouched and touched the earth at the base of the stake. The soil was new. Someone had pulled the stake up — and driven it back in again.

The touch told him more than the sight had. The soil had been dug, held, and replaced — the work of hands, not of wind; wind never pats the earth back down. And the stake had been driven back at a slightly different angle, the way a man drives a stake when he is in a hurry and thinking about something else. Kamon knew that particular angle well. He had spent his life reading the small betrayals of the ground: a spade-scrape under a bed of straw, a joint re-pointed with the wrong mortar, a course of brick laid at evening when the light lies.

The sun was already down; only a few finishing craftsmen remained on the works. Kamon did not raise his voice. He walked three circuits around the stake, his knuckles tapping its shaft, and then followed the line of stakes eastward, section by section. At the fifth section, he stopped.

On the rammed-earth surface lay a small patch of loosened soil — scraped, then covered over with dry earth. The footprints had been swept away, swept carefully — but the sweep marks in the sand ran against the wind.

He set his hand on the haft of the stone chisel at his belt and stood there a long time. His fingers found the three shallow grooves worn into the haft and moved over them, slowly, one after another — the chisel that had been with him twenty years, and the place his fingers went by themselves when something was pressing on his mind. The grooves were his oldest habit, older than the city, older than the guild; they were the place his hand went the way other men’s hands went to a prayer bead or a sword hilt.

The wind lifted the fine sand off the works and flung it against his trouser legs. To the west, the lamps of the craftsmen’s village were already alight in a scattered constellation; beyond them, the roof of the official warehouse, the banner of the healing hall, and the houses he had built, room by room, with his own crews. This city had grown up under his eyes. The city was still growing — and someone was digging at its foundations.

He crouched, and packed the loosened earth flat again, tamping it until it matched the ground around it. Then he stood and walked in the direction of the Chief Construction Bureau. This was a thing Lu Zhu had to know first.

The walk took him past the wine stall by the material yard — still open, still full of men — and he did not stop. A foreman who stops at the wine stall with a suspicion in his pocket is a foreman who wakes up having forgotten what he knew. He walked on, through the craftsmen’s village gate, past the rows of sleeping houses, and the whole way his hand stayed on the chisel haft, the grooves under his fingers, his mind turning the three signs over and over like stones in a tumbler: the moved stake, the swept sand, the wind against the sweep marks. Three signs, one meaning. By the time he reached the bureau gate, he had the meaning arranged in order, ready to set in front of Lu Zhu like a row of bricks.

The temple project had been under way for seventeen days.

The temple ground had been cleared three months before.

The central quarter was the smoothest piece of ground on the whole planning map. The official warehouses, the healing hall, the craftsmen’s village — all of them had been routed around it, and everyone knew what the ground was being kept for. There had been a few old storehouses on the site; they were torn down. A stretch of wild reeds; it was cut. The ground rose and fell; it was leveled with river sand. On the day of the clearing, Lu Zhu walked the site from morning to night — a step, a pause, a step — his charcoal moving in a notebook in his hand. He would not let anyone walk with him; he had one apprentice stand far off holding a rope, to serve as his reference mark.

The pace of his walking said something to the men who watched from the edges of the site. He was not pacing off distances — he was walking time. Every pause came when a shadow crossed a mark; every step was timed against the sun’s movement across the ground, the way a man times a water clock by watching the drip. The men could not read what he was doing, but they could read that he was doing something, and that it mattered, and that it was none of their business.

”What is the master measuring?” The apprentice whispered to a man nearby.

”I don’t know.” The man said. ”The Master Builder’s affairs — don’t ask.”

They learned the answer later. What Lu Zhu had measured that day was the shadow of the ground across all twelve hours of daylight. From dawn to dusk he drove a dozen small wooden pegs into the earth — each peg standing for the sunlight at one hour of the day.

Seventeen days ago, on the temple works of the central quarter, Lu Zhu had presided over the groundbreaking ceremony.

”Ceremony” was a generous word for it; it could not have been simpler. No priests chanting. No burnt offerings. No drums. Lu Zhu stood on the cleared ground with a measuring tape and a stick of charcoal. First he measured the east-west axis. Then the boundary of the northern and southern wings. Then he crouched, and in the exact center of the site, drew a circle.

”Here,” he said, ”is the altar.”

A considerable crowd had turned out that day. The Chief Overseer stood at the north edge with a file of officials. Hapy had ridden back from the quarry. Meri had come over from the official warehouse. The craftsmen of the village had turned out in still greater numbers, packing two rings deep around the site. The wind came off the river, carrying a little moisture, and made the lime lines on the ground go faintly white.

Lu Zhu did not give a long speech. He set out the whole form of the temple in the plainest words.

”Aten is the sun god.” He said. ”The sun god’s temple should not be dark.”

The sentence stirred the crowd like a stone dropped in water. The craftsmen all knew what the temple of Amun at Thebes looked like: gate after gate of stone, inner halls going darker and darker as you pressed deeper, the innermost sanctuary lit year-round by nothing but the torches of the priests. What Lu Zhu meant to build was a temple with no roof, no inner chambers, sunlight falling on the altar from sunrise to sunset. Anyone could see it. Anyone could enter.

”An open-air temple — what about the rain?” A voice called from the crowd.

”Gods are not afraid of rain.” Lu Zhu said. ”Granaries are afraid of rain. That is why granaries have roofs, and temples do not.”

The crowd burst out laughing — the laughter of men who had just heard a truth stated so plainly it could not be argued with. But some of the older craftsmen did not laugh. They squatted at the back of the crowd, drawing on their pipes, watching Lu Zhu with something else in their eyes. They had spent their working lives inside the dark temples of the old faith; they had learned the craft in the half-light of the inner sanctum, by torchlight, with incense in their nostrils. The idea of a temple with no roof did not reach them as architecture. It reached them as the end of a world they had built with their own hands.

An old plasterer who had spent twenty years building temples in Thebes said, low, to the man beside him: ”An open altar — wind blows, sand blows, and the god’s image is thick with dust. Our Master Builder seems to be building the temple like a drying yard.” The man beside him answered: ”What’s wrong with a drying yard? Is there a single grain of its wheat that did not grow under the sun?” The old plasterer was caught short, and said nothing more. But the set of his shoulders said what his mouth could not: he was not convinced, and he would not be convinced by a sentence.

The Chief Overseer did not laugh. He stared at the circle drawn on the ground for a long time.

After the ceremony dispersed, the Overseer did not leave at once. He walked a circuit around the circle Lu Zhu had drawn, and looked up at the sky.

”Really no roof?” He asked.

”None.” Lu Zhu said. ”Not a blade of grass sheltered over the altar. Whatever the god is, let the people see him as he is.”

”When the lords of Thebes hear of it, they will call you a heretic again.” The Overseer said.

”The heretics are them.” Lu Zhu said. ”Aten is the sun god. Every place the sun touches is the god’s temple.”

He said it without heat, the way he said everything that mattered — and that was what made it impossible to answer. There was no argument to be had with a man who had already decided what the sun was. The Overseer had learned, over two years in this city, that Lu Zhu’s quiet statements were load-bearing walls: they did not move, and everything else was built around them.

The Overseer said no more. As he walked out of the site, he looked back once. Dusk had come down; the last of the lime lines on the works were going pale in the wind, like a vast drawing laid on the ground, waiting for someone to fill it in.

The first days of the works went smoothly.

The old topsoil was stripped from the site, and the foundation trenches went down. The soft-ground foundation method Lu Zhu had settled on came from the ancient rammed-earth technique discovered years before in the cavity between the double walls of the abandoned shrine: layer by layer, each layer three inches, rammed hard before the next went down, with broken pottery shards and fine sand worked between the layers. The technique had been tested on the sample granary of the official warehouse; the water table in the central quarter ran high, and nothing less than a thick foundation would do. Meri came to look at the foundation every evening after work, and never said whether it was good or bad — only crouched at the edge of the pit and worked the moisture of the rammed surface between his fingers, over and over.

Ramming is heavy labor. Teams of four lifted a stone rammer of a hundred-odd pounds and drove it down, again and again. Lu Zhu had set the rules for the layers: three inches of earth per layer, three passes of the ram — the first pass to pack it solid, the second to level it, the third to burnish it — until the surface shone, and a fingernail dragged across it left no mark. Between the layers went the pottery shards and the fine sand, so that each layer bit into the next and no layer could slide.

The shards were the city’s own archaeology: broken jars from the potters’ quarter, brick fragments from demolished sheds, the refuse of the new capital’s first years, all of it now being buried into the temple’s floor where it would do its one honest day’s work for the next thousand years. There was something fitting in it — the city’s broken things holding up the city’s most important building.

The craftsmen chanted as they worked. On the third pass, the chant came together at its best. The caller was a dark-faced man with a voice so thick and clear it carried half a li: ”Hai — yo!” The ram came down with a dull boom, blow after blow, like a great heart beating somewhere beneath the earth. The rhythm of the chant was the rhythm of the work — not the other way around; the men had learned long ago that a voice in time with the ram could lift a hundred-pound stone all day, and a voice out of time could break a man’s back by noon.

Lu Zhu came once every evening. He crouched at the edge of the pit, laid his palm flat on the rammed surface, and felt the earth holding him up, steady. Then he drew a line across the surface with a fingernail, and studied the depth of the scratch.

”It can be denser still.” He said sometimes. ”Tomorrow, add half a pass.”

The ramming crews grumbled — but by the end, even they had caught the taste of it. The denser the foundation went, the harder the ground grew beneath their feet, and standing on it, a man’s heart grew steadier with his footing. There is a particular satisfaction, known only to builders, in making the ground itself more solid than it was before you came to it.

What truly taxed Lu Zhu was the columns.

The temple had forty-eight columns in all, ringed around the altar in two circles. The outer ring of twenty-four carried the colonnade of the square; the inner ring of twenty-four enclosed the altar. The columns were not set at random — the position, height, and orientation of every single one had to work with the sunlight. Lu Zhu had been calculating this on the drawings for two months; but drawings are drawings, and on the ground, every column had to be checked one by one.

”The positions of the columns cannot be off by a hair.” Lu Zhu said to Kamon. ”Off by a hair, and the sunlight will not be right.”

”Understood.” Kamon said. ”I’ll watch them to death for you.”

The column stone came from Hapy’s quarry.

Hapy now ran the whole quarry ring around the new capital; the four-zone layout was a rule he had set down three years ago. The temple column stone, he chose himself: sandstone with the grain running true, limestone with no hidden cracks, and every block that came out bore the quarry’s mark struck into its side. The column stone came to forty-eight blocks in all, and when they were delivered to the temple works, Hapy rode with the convoy himself.

”Master.” He found Lu Zhu and handed over a stone ledger. ”Forty-eight blocks, not one missing. The dimensions, the grain, the date each was cut from the pit — all in here.”

Lu Zhu leafed through the ledger without speaking. Hapy stood beside him, and after a while could not hold back: ”I watched this batch close. Cut by day, and by night there were men guarding it. The business with the mole in the quarry — I’m not letting that happen a second time.”

”I know.” Lu Zhu closed the ledger and looked at him. ”You watch the stone. Kamon watches the ground. Both watched — and the temple cannot fall.”

Hapy nodded. He had come a long way from the quarry orphan who had first learned his craft among the stone piles; the marks of the quarry were on him now — the deep tan, the hands that could read a block’s grain by touch, the careful way he counted everything twice. But some things had not changed: the way he stood a little taller when his master’s eye was on him, the way he spoke of the stones as if they were people.

As he left, he stood a while at the gate of the material yard, looking at the rows of stone blocks under their straw mats — looking at them the way a man looks at a row of sleeping men. Then he mounted and rode for the quarry, and did not look back, because looking back was not his habit and the quarry needed him before dark.

Kamon’s ”watch them to death” was how, on the evening of the seventeenth day, he found the stake had been moved.

That night, Kamon did not go back to the craftsmen’s village. He called four trusted craftsmen, lit two wind lanterns, and combed the entire temple works from end to end.

The material yard came first. The four men split into two pairs and passed all eighty foundation stones of the column ring through their hands, block by block. By the second half of the night, two of the younger craftsmen’s hands were numb with cold — and they came at last to the row they least wanted to touch: the six blocks lying at the very bottom. Those six had lain at the bottom since the unloading, and no one had turned them over in daylight. Kamon had them lift the upper stones off, one by one. When the last was raised, he held the lantern close, and squinted. He looked for a while, then drew a carpenter’s square from his breast and set it against the stone.

”Wrong.” He said.

The four men’s hearts rose into their throats. Kamon said nothing more, checked two more blocks, and stood up: ”Someone has been at the stone.”

The foundation came next. The rammed surface of the eastern section had been level at the daylight inspection; at night, a stretch of it felt different under the hand. Kamon crouched, pressed his palm flat against the surface, and worked forward slowly — and stopped at a point where the earth gave. He scraped the dry earth away. Beneath it: fresh gouge marks.

The third place was the timber shed on the north side. The wormholes had been stopped up with mud — one of the young craftsmen had not noticed at first, and had even praised the timber’s fine condition. Kamon walked over and scraped a fingernail down one of the beams. The mud fell away, and beneath it, wormhole after wormhole, packed close.

”Old worms in new grain.” Kamon said. ”The man who did this work is a professional.”

That combing turned up three things wrong.

The first: the column footing stones in the material yard. The acceptance ledger recorded eighty blocks, dimensions exact. But when Kamon had the stones turned one by one, he found that the six at the very bottom were a fraction shorter on one side than the ledger said — a little less than half an inch. Half an inch is invisible to the eye; it takes a carpenter’s square to catch it. But caught, it was half an inch. Those six stones had been switched in during the unloading.

He held the lantern over the switched stones for a long time. Half an inch on a footing stone meant nothing at first — and everything later. A column ring that is off by half an inch at the base is off by half an inch at the capital; the entablature leans; the sunlight lands a hand’s breadth from where it was calculated. Whoever had chosen half an inch had chosen it precisely because it was too small to notice and too large to forgive.

The second: the rammed surface of the eastern foundation. The flatness that had passed the daylight inspection had been scraped loose in one long strip at night, and covered over with dry earth. A rammed surface hates rework — scrape it loose and ram it again, and its density is never the same. The strip would pass an inspection by eye; it would fail the ground’s memory.

The third: in the north timber shed. Several of the new reinforcement timbers had been switched — new wood swapped for worm-eaten old wood, the wormholes stopped with mud, looking sound to anyone who did not look closely. The mud had been pressed in with a thumb, and the thumb had been a craftsman’s thumb — the fill smooth, the surface sanded over, the kind of finishing that only a man who had handled wood for decades would think to do.

Three things wrong. The work was fine, practiced, the work of a professional in every detail.

”This is not one man.” Kamon said to Lu Zhu. ”It’s men mixed in among the craftsmen. And they’ve been mixed in for some time.”

Lu Zhu listened, and said nothing. He looked over the mismatched stones and the worm-eaten timbers, knocked on them with his knuckles, then crouched and pushed the swept sand aside with his hand to look at the rammed surface beneath.

”You think it’s the old priests’ people?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Who else would do this?” Kamon said. ”Three years ago, the quarry — same method.”

”This time is different.” Lu Zhu said. ”This time they’re going straight for the foundations and the columns. They know the column positions cannot be wrong.”

”So what they want to destroy is the columns.” Kamon said.

Lu Zhu stood up and tucked the charcoal back into his belt. He dusted the earth off his hands, and said: ”Investigate. But investigate cleverly.”

”Cleverly, how?”

”Catch them red-handed.” Lu Zhu said. ”They’ve moved once — they’ll move again. We pretend we’ve noticed nothing. Straighten the stake. Switch the stone back. Then — wait.”

The plan had the quality of all his plans: it looked like patience and was actually economy. A trap laid in plain sight cost nothing; a chase would cost men and raise alarms. Let the saboteurs spend their own nights wearing themselves out; let them think the city’s builders were blind; and one night they would come back to their own trap like water returning to a channel.

Kamon looked at him. ”Wait how long?”

”Until they can’t stand it anymore.”

In the days that followed, the temple works looked exactly as they always had.

The stake was straightened. The acceptance inspections went on as usual. The crews arrived and knocked off as usual. Kamon walked the works by day, knuckles tapping the stones, crouching to look at wall joints, just as always — and because he was just as always, the works stayed just as always, and the men who had moved the stake began, in the way of men who have gotten away with something, to grow careless. Only he knew that after every shift, four points of the works were under watch. The watchers were not soldiers — they were the most trusted craftsmen of the guild, crouching in the shadows of the material yard, one night at a time.

Kamon waited. But he did not only wait.

He set up the temple project’s three-tier quality inspection system. It had grown out of the quarry’s three-tier acceptance system from years before — the quarry had inspected materials; the temple inspected process. Materials must be inspected; process more so. He laid it out precisely: crew self-inspection — every craftsman checked his own section when he finished, and signed his name. Foreman re-inspection — every foreman went over all the work under his name before knocking off, and signed. Chief inspection — Kamon himself, with two old masters, went over the whole day’s work at the end of every shift, and signed.

Three layers of names. Miss one layer, and the day’s work did not count. Whoever signed his name — if something went wrong later, the name was found.

The system was Kamon’s answer to a question the whole city had been asking since the quarry affair: how do you make a hundred men responsible for what they build, when a hundred men can each claim the fault belongs to another? The answer was not trust and not punishment — it was the signature. A name on a sheet was a bridge from the work to the man; walk across it and the fault had an address.

The craftsmen grumbled at first. One wall-builder muttered: ”Sign, sign — we’ve already left our handprints, afraid we’ll run?” Kamon heard it, said nothing, and handed him a roll of signed acceptance sheets to look at. Row after row of names on the hides, from the weighing clerk at the material yard to the mortar mixer on the works — not one missing.

”This work of ours is meant to stand for centuries.” Kamon said. ”The signatures are for the people who will look at it centuries from now. Whose skill was good, whose was not — it’s all written here.”

The craftsman clicked his tongue, and stopped grumbling. Later, he became one of the most conscientious signers of them all.

The night watches were no pleasure. The desert nights were cold; when the wind came up, the sand worked its way into a man’s collar. The watchers dared not make a fire, dared not cough, dared not even touch their water skins — for fear the sound of water would carry. They learned to sit in the dark the way the desert taught everything to sit in the dark: motionless, patient, part of the night. A man who has crouched three nights in a material-yard shadow begins to see the difference between a shadow that moves with the wind and a shadow that moves against it — and that difference, when it came, would be the whole game.

One young craftsman, on his third night of watching, was shaking so badly with cold that the next day, on the works, he nearly brought the hammer down on his own foot. Kamon saw it, did not scold him — only took off his own old sheepskin vest and tossed it to him.

”If you can’t hold out, say so.” Kamon said. ”We’ll change the man.”

”I can hold out.” The young craftsman said. ”I’m young. I burn hot.”

His lips were white as he said it. Kamon did not expose him; he turned and walked away. From the next nights on, the watches were rotated in three shifts, half a night per man, so that the day’s work was not affected.

Rotation or not, Kamon himself came to watch every other night.

When he came, the watchers shifted aside to make room for him. He did not sit — he stood in the shadow at the edge of the material yard, and stood there half the night. Sometimes, standing there, he thought of Ma Laosi. The old stonemason from the West Bank — Kamon had known him: more than ten years ago, when Kamon was working on the temple repairs at Thebes, the two of them had shared the same worksite. In those days Ma Laosi’s skill was fine, and the man was honest, and he always offered his pipe first when they met. Who would have thought that ten-odd years later, one man would be standing guard on this side of the wall, and the other digging at it from the other.

Sometimes Kamon wondered: if he had not followed Lu Zhu out of the West Bank — would he, one day, have become a man like Ma Laosi? Guarding the old rules, working for the old masters, until he could no longer tell whether what he built was a temple or a tomb.

He had asked himself the question many times over the years, and the answer had never changed: he did not know. There but for the turning of a road went half the men he had grown up with. The difference between a builder and a saboteur was not skill, and not conscience; it was the day someone asked them to choose which walls to stand behind. Kamon had been asked, and had chosen; Ma Laosi, by the look of things, had been asked and had chosen differently — or had never been asked at all.

The thought came to him only at night. When the day broke, he pressed it back down under the chisel, and went to work.

The first three days of signing were the most chaotic.

Some craftsmen could not read; they drew a circle for a signature. Kamon said no — a circle could not be traced to the man who drew it. He had the literate apprentices assign every man a number and issued each a small wooden tally with his number carved on it. To sign was to press the tally — the illiterate pressed a fingerprint beside the tally number, and the print and the number together made the man.

The system had a quiet genius to it, though no one at the time called it that: it gave every man on the works a name that could be found. The day would come — Kamon was certain of it, the way he was certain of a well-seasoned timber — when a fault would surface, and the question ”whose work is this?” would have an answer that could not be shrugged off. The quarry affair had taught the city that much: a crime without a name was a crime that would be committed again.

And some foremen grumbled about the bother — there was work to finish; when was there time to inspect? Kamon did not argue with him. He did one thing: he spot-checked that foreman’s section and another foreman’s section — the one who followed the rules — three days running. In three days, the rule-following section turned up not a single fault; the grumbler’s section turned up two mortar-mix ratios that did not match. Kamon laid the results in front of him. The foreman’s face went red.

From the fourth day on, no one on the works said the signing was a bother.

The mole moved on the eleventh night.

There were three of them, all craftsmen who had been newly hired onto the works two months before, when the temple project took on men: an old stonemason who could read stone grain, a mortar mixer, and a material hauler. That night, they went for the two cartloads of new reinforcement timber in the north shed — shifting the timber out by night, the worm-eaten old wood already hidden in the dead grass outside the material yard.

They had not counted on the three men already crouching in that dead grass.

They had been crouching there since before the moon rose, in the cold and the sand, not speaking, not smoking, not even breathing loud. They had watched the three figures come down the slope of the yard, watched them lift the first load of timber, watched them carry it to the edge of the grass — and only then, when the load was in the open and the men’s hands were full, did the watchers move.

Caught red-handed.

The takedown was done by two of the guild’s watching craftsmen, both old West Bank men, one a rammed-earth worker, one a wall-builder. They pinned the three men down — one held them, the other ran for word, and their footsteps made no sound at all. Ten-odd nights of squatting in the dark had taught them to cross sand like cats.

By the time Kamon arrived, the three men were already pinned on the material yard. The wind lanterns swung over them; three faces, all gray. The old stonemason was well along in years, hair gone white, crouching on the ground with a length of hempen rope still wound around his wrist — the rope he had meant to tie the stolen timber with, now tying its owner.

”Ma Laosi.” Kamon called him by name. ”The old stonemason of the West Bank. Twenty years of work on temple projects. Why are you doing this?”

The old stonemason did not raise his head. After a long moment, he said in a hoarse voice: ”Kamon. You’re a craftsman too. Put your hand on your heart and tell me — can an open-air temple be called a temple?”

”What a temple should be is not for you to decide in the middle of the night.” Kamon said.

”I’ve built temples half my life, and they were all built that way. The inner sanctum. The god’s image. The torches. The scriptures —” The old stonemason raised his head; his eyes were red in the lantern light. ”Build it your way, and you set the god out in the sun, where everyone can see him, everyone can touch him. Is that still a god?”

He was not a bad man — that was the terrible part of it. Kamon could hear it in the man’s voice: Ma Laosi believed every word he said. He was not a thief and not a mercenary; he was a man who had loved his craft for sixty years and watched it being unmade, and had chosen the wrong side of his own grief. It did not make the worm-eaten timber any less worm-eaten, or the scraped foundation any less scraped. But it made the punishment to come feel like something else — like the closing of a door on a man who had once lived in the house.

Kamon did not answer. He kicked the worm-eaten timbers over in front of the old stonemason: ”So this is your temple-building skill? Swapping worm-eaten wood for new timber — if the god knows, it’s your crime he asks about first.”

The old stonemason opened his mouth, and no words came. His lips trembled twice, and at last he lowered his head.

The mortar mixer and the material hauler had even less backbone — before they were even asked, they were shaking on their own. They confessed: men from Thebes had approached them, paying by the tenday, for them to ”keep the temple works from running smooth.” They did not know who stood above; they knew only that the man who paid wore a clean white robe.

”White robe.” Kamon repeated the words, and turned his head to look at Lu Zhu.

Ma Laosi had been approached two months earlier, in a small tavern on the river flats.

The tavern was the kind of place where a craftsman could sit with his wine and be left alone — low ceiling, smoky lamps, the river’s damp smell coming through the door. The man who approached him wore a white robe and sat with his back to the light, his face hard to make out. The man in white poured him half a bowl of wine and did not circle the matter: ”The new capital’s temple is breaking ground. It needs an old master who can read stone grain. You go.”

”At my age, I don’t want to move.” Ma Laosi said.

”Is it that you don’t want to move — or that you don’t want to put your strength into a heretic’s temple?” The man in white said. ”You built Amun’s temples for twenty years. Three of the god’s images in the inner sanctum were carved by your own hand. Put your hand on your heart: can an open-air altar hold a god?”

He knew the three images by number. That was the detail that had reached Ma Laosi, past all the rest of the argument — the man in white had done his homework; he knew which images, which sanctum, which years. It was the homework of a man who did not recruit by accident.

Ma Laosi held the bowl and said nothing. His fingers moved slowly around the rim of the bowl, the way a man’s fingers move over a familiar piece of stone.

The man in white pushed a sack of grain to the middle of the table. ”Go. You’ll be paid by the tenday. All you have to do, on the works, is keep their work from running too smooth.” He paused. ”For no other reason than Amun.”

In the end, Ma Laosi took the sack of grain. He told himself it was for Amun. He had built temples all his life; he understood what a god was. A god lives in the dark; a god must be revered and feared. To drag the god out into the sunlight, where anyone could see and touch him — that was an insult to the god. He carried the sack home through the dark streets of the river flats, and he did not sleep well that night, and he told himself the sleeplessness was the wine.

Lu Zhu had been standing outside the ring of men, saying nothing. His face was in the shadow of the lantern, hard to read.

The next day, Kamon reported the matter to the Chief Overseer.

The Overseer’s face changed color three times as he listened, and at last he slapped the tabletop: ”Investigate! Go through every man on the works, from the beginning!” This time he was genuinely enraged. He had been present at the quarry affair three years before; he had never imagined that, three years on, the same thing would come again — and aimed at the temple.

”Investigate, yes.” Lu Zhu said. ”But not with a great to-do. Make a great to-do, and the men will run.”

”Then what?”

”Take the three into custody and question them about their line above.” Lu Zhu said. ”On the works — loose on the surface, tight underneath. Let everyone know something has happened, but let no one know how far the inquiry has reached.”

The Overseer did as he advised. The three men were taken away for questioning; the works went on as usual. The news spread anyway — news of this kind never stays buried on a worksite. The craftsmen clustered and talked; some cursed, some were afraid, and most felt the cold dread of after-the-fact: the knowledge that for eleven nights, they had eaten their supper and slept their sleep on a worksite that someone else was digging at from underneath.

And because the works had gone on as usual — because no one had been told how far the inquiry had reached, or who else might be watched — the talk on the works stayed low and careful. Men looked at one another a fraction longer than before, and the longest looks were exchanged between the men who had signed the acceptance ledgers, who were suddenly aware that their names were now evidence. Nothing had changed on the surface. Everything had changed underneath. That, precisely, was what ”loose on the surface, tight underneath” was meant to do.

With this on his mind, the Overseer slept badly for three nights. When he could not sleep, he got up and went through the works’ acceptance ledgers, page by page, and only felt a little steadier when he came to the signed names. His wife asked if he was ill. He said no — only that something sat on his shoulders. He could not say what it was; he knew only that this temple pressed heavier on him than any project he had ever handled. He had overseen granaries and warehouses and river embankments; he had never overseen anything that people were willing to kill for.

The news reached the quarry, and Hapy rode back to the new capital that same night. He burst into the material yard, turned the six switched stones over one by one, looked at them, and went pale. ”Master — was the stone switched on the road?” ”Whose name is on the hauling ledger?” Lu Zhu asked. Hapy checked: the hauling had been done by the quarry’s old hand, a man who had worked under him two years. Lu Zhu patted his shoulder: ”The man is safe, and that is what matters. Stone can be quarried again — but make up the hauling rules now.” Hapy nodded, and rode back to the quarry that night; the next day, every cart train in and out of the quarry ran with double escorts, and the escort ledgers carried signatures, and the signatures were checked at both ends of every road.

Meri came the following day. He walked a circuit around the foundation pit, looked long at the scraped stretch of rammed surface, and finally said to Kamon: ”This section is re-rammed. When it’s done, I’ll come and inspect it.” He kept his word: on re-ramming day he stood at the edge of the pit all afternoon, his eyes following the rammer up and down, until the last layer shone. He did not speak while he watched — men of his trade spoke through their eyes — and when it was done, he pressed his palm flat to the surface, held it there, and nodded once. That nod was worth more than any speech.

”No wonder the eastern foundation has been restless these days.” A rammed-earth worker said. ”So someone was scraping it at night.”

”That’s the stuff of lives.” The man beside him took it up. ”A fault in the foundation — when the wall comes down later, who does it fall on? On our own people.”

The talk went around the works in low voices, and the more it went around, the clearer the shape of it became. These men had grumbled at the signatures and the inspections; now, suddenly, they understood what the signatures were for. The three-tier system was not distrust aimed at them — it was armor. The men who had signed their names to the foundation were the men who had caught the moles; the same signatures that had seemed like bureaucracy now seemed like a wall within the wall.

”Those creatures took their silver and wrecked everyone’s work. Rats in the grain — good riddance to them, caught.”

And one older, steadier craftsman said the thing that cut deepest: ”They didn’t wreck only the foundation. They wrecked the face of the new capital’s craftsmen. After this, who will still trust our people’s hands?”

The talk fell quiet at that. The men working the site went back to it with their heads a little lower.

Kamon heard all of it. He said little — only brought out the three-tier inspection ledger again and moved the final inspection half a watch earlier. From then on, at the end of every shift, he and two old masters went over every new piece of work on the site, rain or wind.

The two old masters were West Bank men, the same pair who had helped him lay out the craftsmen’s village foundations; they had seen more walls fail than most men had seen built. They walked the works the way night fishermen walk a riverbank — slowly, and seeing everything — and if either of them stopped, the whole crew stopped with him, because a stopped old master was worth more than a hundred passing words. Their names went down at the bottom of the day’s ledger, under the day’s work, in the same hand, every day: the last signatures of the night, and the first line of defense of every morning.

That evening, the craftsmen’s village was quieter than usual.

On ordinary nights, the little wine stall by the material yard always had its customers. That night it had none. Men took their food and squatted at the foot of the wall to eat, each alone, none speaking. Only a few half-grown apprentices, too young to understand, were still comparing how many stones each had moved that day — until their masters hushed them, low.

Kamon carried his bowl to the eastern edge of the temple works and squatted there, eating alone. He had not gone back to the craftsmen’s village. The wind came off the river, carrying moisture, blowing a little of the works’ sand-smell away. He ate, looking at the foundation pit in the dark — the rammed surface lying flat and even, like a field freshly plowed. He thought of his own life, nearly all of it: from the stone yard of the West Bank to the temple of the new capital, callus laid over callus. These works — he believed in them. He believed in stone. He believed in rammed earth. He believed in written names.

When the dark was complete, he set down the bowl, stood, and walked into the depth of the works. In the dark, the night-patrol lamps drew his shadow out long behind him, step by step, walking over ground he himself had approved that day.

The lamps had been his idea, too — not for light, but for the pattern they made: a man walking the works at night could tell at a glance if a lamp had gone out, and a lamp going out in the wrong order was the first signal of a shadow crossing the yard. He had set the lamps himself, the first night, spacing them so that each one’s light just touched the next one’s base. It was the same principle as the beacon towers of the western line, though he did not know it yet: lights that could see each other were a line that could not be crossed unseen. He walked the full circuit, and every lamp was burning, and the shadows held nothing but wind.

On the third day, the men in custody gave up a little.

The questioning took place in the rear courtyard of the Chief Construction Bureau. The Overseer, Lu Zhu, and Kamon were all present. The three men were questioned differently: the mortar mixer and the material hauler collapsed after a few questions, each scrambling to say he was only in it for the money — they spilled everything, down to the color of the shoes the man in white wore. Ma Laosi was the hard one. He squatted in the corner; ask ten questions, get one answer; press him, and he closed his eyes, like a stone.

He was not protecting anyone, and he was not being brave. He was doing the only thing a man of his kind knew how to do when everything was over: he was going quiet, the way a kiln goes quiet when the firing is done, and waiting to be left alone with what he had done. The other two had answered with their mouths; he was answering with his whole body, and the answer was: I have nothing left to say.

”Ma Laosi.” Lu Zhu crouched down in front of him. ”You still have a shop on the West Bank — I know. Your son loads cargo at the ferry — I know that too. If this affair goes wide, how do you think their days will go? Have you thought about that?”

Ma Laosi’s eyelids moved.

”You haven’t.” Lu Zhu said. ”You’ve thought only about your god. But will your god look after your son’s life or death?”

Ma Laosi’s head came up sharply, his eyes red. He opened his mouth, and something rolled in his throat for a long time before it came out: ”Don’t touch my son.”

”Then talk.” Lu Zhu said.

The question had been chosen, and not kindly: it was the one question in the world that could reach a man who had stopped caring about himself. Lu Zhu had not raised the son to threaten him. He had raised him because a man who has stopped fearing for himself will still answer for his blood — and the truth, when it came, would come through that door or not at all.

Ma Laosi talked. Not much. His line above was a peddler of secondhand goods at the river-flat ferry, and beyond that the thread broke. The peddler had fled — and before he left, he burned his shack at the ferry clean to the ground. On the man in white, the three of them could only repeat the same few sentences; nothing new could be drawn from them.

The burned shack said more than the three men had: the line above had been ready to cut itself loose from the moment the trap closed. A peddler’s shack at a ferry crossing was not a headquarters; it was a mailbox. The men who had built this scheme had built it the way they built everything — in layers, each layer ignorant of the next, each layer burnable. The three craftsmen in custody were the only layer that could not be burned, because they were the layer that had been caught.

Lu Zhu listened, and said one thing: ”As expected. When they work, they never leave a long thread behind.”

”So that’s it, then?” Kamon asked.

”No.” Lu Zhu said. ”The line above these three is cut — but the aim of the men who set them has not changed. They will not stop.”

He crouched, and with the charcoal drew a line in the sand. One end of the line was the altar’s position on the temple works. The other end pointed toward Thebes.

”This time, they came for the columns.” Lu Zhu said. ”Next time, they will come again. Until the columns stand — nothing on the works may slacken, not by a thread.”

”I know.” Kamon said.

He said it without hesitation, the way a foreman answers a foreman’s order — and Lu Zhu let the matter rest there. Somewhere between the two of them, the sand drawing was already fading; the wind was erasing it line by line, the way the city’s real defenses would have to be drawn and redrawn until they could not be erased. The two men looked at the fading line for a moment, and then the meeting was over, and the night watch took up its posts.

That night, Lu Zhu called the Overseer and Kamon together for a meeting in the courtyard of the Chief Construction Bureau.

”The old priests’ men want to destroy the temple. What they cannot do openly, they do in the dark.” Lu Zhu said. ”The dark — that, we’ve guarded against. But there is one thing in the open that matters more than timber and stone.”

”What?” The Overseer asked.

”The hearts of the people.” Lu Zhu said. ”Their wrecking of the works’ timber is a small matter. What they want is to make the people of the new capital feel that this temple is unlucky, that it cannot be built. So from tomorrow, the temple works will open its gates for half a day every tenday. Whoever wants to look — let him come in and look. Let them see how this temple rises, stone by stone.”

He said it the way he said everything about the temple — as if the temple were already finished, and the people were already standing inside it looking up. The Overseer had seen that manner before: it was the manner of a man who is not describing a hope but a load-bearing fact. He thought about it, and nodded.

The method was not new. When the drainage works had been plagued by rumors, Lu Zhu had opened the works to the people, and the more they saw, the faster the rumors died. This time, he used the same method on the temple.

There was a logic to it that the old priests would never understand: a rumor feeds on the closed door. The temple was the most guarded place in the city, so the temple was where every rumor could live. Open the door, and the rumor starves. Let the people watch the stone go down course by course, and no whisper in any tavern can compete with the weight of what they have seen with their own eyes.

On the first open day, the crowd was not large. Mostly the families of the craftsmen’s village, and a few curious half-grown children. They lined up along the edge of the rammed foundation, watching the masons set stone, mix mortar, stretch lines. An old woman reached out and touched the stone of a column footing, and wiped her hand on her clothes, and said: ”So the temple’s foundation — it’s the same principle as the foot of our house wall.” The people around her laughed at her. But she added, in earnest: ”Not the same. Our house wall’s foot — it’s not this deep.”

The Overseer heard of the remark and repeated it to everyone he met. He said the temple was for the god — and for the common people. Once the common people had touched that stone, the temple had moved into their hearts.

The remark had done its work better than any sermon. The old woman had not come to the works to be impressed; she had come because her son-in-law was a laborer on the foundation crew. She had touched the stone the way she would touch any new thing in her village, and found it heavier, deeper, more honest than she had expected — and she had gone home and told the neighbors, in the only language the neighborhood trusted: the language of a housewife comparing foundations.

Lu Zhu turned to Kamon again: ”The column work — from now on, all of it in daylight. At night, only preparation. If they mean to move in the dark, we give them no work in the dark.”

”Good.” Kamon said.

When the arrangements were done, Lu Zhu went back to his own room, lit the lamp, and took an old roll of leather from the bottom of his chest.

On the roll was the column layout chart he had been working on for over two months — forty-eight columns, two rings, every column marked with its height, its spacing, and its orientation, the figures packed dense as a page of accounts that would not balance. This was what he had not told anyone. Why the column positions could not be wrong, he knew better than anyone — but the true reason lay under the drawings, and he had not spoken a single word of it.

He spread the roll flat under the lamp and let his fingertip move down the columns, one by one. The lamp flame jumped once; the shadows on the wall swayed.

Forty-eight columns. Two rings. Twenty-four outer, twenty-four inner — and every one of them a door in a house of light, positioned so that the sun would enter through one door and leave through another, on the one day of the year when the light had to fall exactly where it was calculated to fall. He had drawn that day into the chart the way other men draw a destination into a map: not as a possibility, but as a place one intends to arrive.

Half a measure of lamp oil burned away. Lu Zhu did not hurry to sleep. He went over the figures on the column chart from the top, once again.

Where those figures came from, only he knew. The priests of Egypt could read the sky; their astronomical records, accumulated over centuries, lay mostly sealed in the storehouses since the closing of the old temples. He had borrowed a few rolls through the Overseer — and the shadow scales on them did not quite match his own measurements of the new capital. So he had set up a gnomon by the brick-drying yard, and measured the length of its shadow at sunrise, noon, and sunset every day — forty-nine days of it, a small book of data. In which season, at which hour, how long the shadow fell and in which direction — this account he kept more carefully than the grain ledger.

Forty-nine days of standing at a pole three times a day, in wind and sun, had taught him things no borrowed roll could: how the shadow shortened between morning and noon, how it swung through noon in a curve no two days repeated exactly, how the dust-haze of the desert softened the edge of a shadow in the afternoon. He had learned to read the sky’s ledger the way he read the ground’s — slowly, and with respect.

The column chart had grown out of that book. Which column should be tall, which short, which moved half a foot south, which half a foot north — all of it had its reason. And the greatest reason of all, he had told no one.

He ran his fingers along the edge of the roll; the knuckles still carried the charcoal dust of the day. Outside the window, the night-patrol lamps were still burning. He knew Kamon would still be awake at this hour, walking the works. With such a foreman on the job, half of his heart was at ease. The other half was waiting for the sun.

”Wait a little longer.” He said, low. ”When the columns stand, you will understand why this temple cannot have a roof.”

The night seeped in through the crack of the window. In the distance, the night-patrol lamps on the temple works burned like sparks scattered on black cloth, unmoving.

And in the column storehouse to the north, beside a stone column that had not yet been brought to the works, a withered hand reached out.

The hand was very steady. It held a thin wooden shim and slipped it into the gap between the column and the timber bed beneath it — slipped it in gently, slowly, as if afraid of waking something.

The shim seated — a hair’s breadth of pressure, no more, and yet a column’s whole life would now lean on it. The hand drew back. The storehouse fell quiet again; only the wind on the door boards, a small sound.

Outside the door, the night-patrol lamps moved closer. The hand’s owner pressed against the wall base, holding his breath, and when the lamps had passed, slipped out through the gap in the storehouse’s rear wall like a shadow. He left nothing behind him but the shim — and the shim, in the morning, would be all the city needed to know that the temple’s enemies had not stopped, would not stop, and had already learned to count to forty-eight.
