Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 62: Chapter 11: Branch Halls Open Together — The Medical Network Takes Shape

Shafi ran between the three branch halls for three straight days. Her cloth shoes wore through twice. Once, on the rear foundation line of the old-city slum-quarter branch hall, a loose brick chip on the sand-lime ground pierced straight through her sole — the brick’s edge, sharp as a shard of river-stone, drove into the leather and held there. She did not feel it at first; only after several more steps did a wet warmth seep through, and when she looked down, the blood had already stained a small dark patch at the split in the sole. The second time, on the stone-paved road between the riverbank branch hall and the ferry crossing, the sole of her other shoe — worn thin as paper from the constant grinding of sand and gravel — split open along a seam, the leather parting like a dried leaf. Nefer had both pairs of shoes resoled — a cobbler from the north-bank settlement fitted the soles with a layer of donkey hide, and the inner seam was reinforced with a row of fine stitching. When Shafi put those shoes on, she pressed down on the thickness of the new sole and said, ”They’ll hold.” Then she vanished back into the growing forest of registration sheets on the main hall’s north wall. Her shadow stretched long and thin, reaching toward the river. Every step she took had already been measured on the roads connecting the main hall to the old-city branch, the old-city branch to the north-bank branch, the north-bank branch to the riverbank — those distances had been written into the leather sheets, absorbed into the soles of her feet.

Each branch hall came in ahead of the timeline drawn on the drawings. The three branch halls’ foundations reached completion almost simultaneously. The old-city branch hall’s wall bricks had already risen past the second course; the builders’ trowels had tapped every brick face to check — no hollow spots, no drummy voids. The north-bank branch hall’s roof beams were being lifted into place by a timber hoist; the beams, hauled from the lumber yard, still carried the scent of the riverbank timber stock, and every timber tenon was cut to match its mortise at the corresponding height. The riverbank branch hall’s pharmacy ventilation slots had been widened to the main hall’s standard dimensions, and the edges of the slots had been ground smooth, fine enough that they would not catch the fingers of a passing pharmacy keeper. Lu Zhu split the main-hall construction crew into three teams, supplementing them with Seb’s stone-supply cart team and the old stonemason’s laborers. The branch halls rose at a pace that far surpassed his initial estimates. These old craftsmen were the ones who had followed Lu Zhu all the way from the West Bank; they knew his standards — every node grounded in inspection, every check signed off, a poorly laid brick meant tearing it out and starting over. No threshold of ”almost good enough” was tolerated.

The faster the construction pace, the heavier Shafi’s burden. The branch-hall drawings had been cross-checked line by line — every branch hall’s pharmacy dimensions, ventilation-slot dimensions, foundation-bearing depth, exterior-wall brick count — all of it built to the main hall’s template, with variations added according to site-specific conditions. The old-city branch hall, pressed against the slum quarter near that shallow well with its poor water quality, needed its ventilation-slot angle offset by half a degree. The riverbank branch hall, perched beside the ferry crossing where the rainy-season flood pressed hardest against the walls, needed an extra layer of crushed-stone-and-charcoal bedding beneath the pharmacy floor. Some of these changes came from Lu Zhu; others were ordered by Imset. But Shafi recorded every single one — after every foundation inspection, she grabbed a handful of sand from the site and tested it: spreading it on a flat stone, touching it, pressing it, probing it — noting the color, the grain size, the moisture between her fingertips, the depth of the water table below — and then wrote her findings in the blank margin of the leather sheet. Every sheet was pinned, eventually, to the main hall’s ”revision wall.” She was not collecting curiosities. She was building a record. A record that could tell anyone — anyone, even someone who had never set foot on the site — what each foundation had cost in sweat and stone. The soils of the three sites all behaved differently: the old city’s soil was short and dry, the north bank’s was sticky and dense, the riverbank’s was loose with gravel beneath. Writing these things down was not vanity — it was so that the next branch hall, whenever and wherever it was built, would not have to pay the same price twice.

The ”revision wall” was no longer just a wall. It had begun as a stretch of blank wall on the south side of the main hall’s pharmacy, but Shafi had pinned every inspection finding there — sheet by sheet — until the wall was entirely covered. The sheets overlapped at the edges: some recorded design changes, some logged construction errors, some were labeled ”temporary — reassess after the first rainy season” and deferred for later. At the edge of every leather sheet, she tied a small stone with palm fiber to keep it from blowing loose in the wind. When the wind gusted in from the ferry crossing, the wall would rustle — a fine, sandy whisper of leather shifting against stone — and the stones would clack lightly against each other. The stones were all different sizes; some came from the riverbank, others from the waste pile at the quarry. Every single one had been picked up by Shafi’s own hand and tied on with her own fingers. ”Weight on the corner,” she said. ”That way you can hear if a sheet has come loose.” No one had taught her this. She had thought of it herself — because she had realized that every character on those leather sheets represented a specific patient, a specific jar of medicine, a specific branch hall. If the wind carried a sheet away, the gap it left behind would be a gap in the record — and in the record, there could be no gaps.

The three branch halls officially opened on the third morning after the construction teams had pulled back. Meru handled the pricing. He had come back from the official warehouse the day before — he had spent an entire morning there, working through a schedule of the surplus grain that the official warehouse was required to release into the market, and then he had gone straight to the branch halls. ”The official-warehouse grain prices — as of today — are now eleven days below the Thebes market rate.” The tip of Meru’s charcoal had worn flat again, the sharp point repeatedly pressed into a small hollow in the wood. ”Before the end of the month, I will divert the portion of the official warehouse’s surplus grain that I had previously earmarked for the grain merchants’ quota. The profit from that sale will cover the branch halls’ dispensing costs at the official-warehouse rate.” He spoke this without emphasis — the same tone he used when calculating the waste from a load of quarried stone — and his thumb rubbed over a number on the tally board as he spoke. Behind that number, unspoken, was his awareness of every patient who would need to take medicine and eat food.

When the pricing dispute reached the apprentice-priest, the apprentice brought the ledger to Imset. Imset looked at it once and handed it back. It was not about the money. It was about the principle. Meru did not write ”charity” into the ledger; he wrote ”official-warehouse surplus grain sold at reduced rate — allocated to medical supply.” Imset studied that entry and added one character beneath it: ”Prices calculated at-cost shall not fall below the official-warehouse parity price, and shall be based on actual disbursement.” The word ”actual” meant: every transaction was a fair-price trade. The healing hall owed no one charity, and no one owed the healing hall gratitude. That single character was pressed — in the blank margin of every copy of the pricing template that Meru later replicated — into the operational logic of the entire branch-hall network. Every dose of medicine, every portion of food — ”Official Warehouse — Transfer — Healing Hall Protocol” — could now be traced, audited, and verified. No entry anywhere said ”alms,” and no entry anywhere said ”gift.”

On the seventh morning before the branch halls opened, Shafi checked the first course of bricks at the old-city branch hall’s pharmacy. The bricks were fresh from the kiln — fired harder than the standard bricks used at the main hall, their surface carrying a hard, glassy sheen. Lu Zhu had stood at the kiln mouth, the heat of the fire still baking his face, and had personally pulled the batch. In the setting sun, the brick faces still held the heat, their color a uniform pale red. Shafi crouched beneath the wall and lifted each brick one by one, holding it flat against her palm. The coarse sand that had been used to rub the brick faces had worn her fingertips almost translucent — the skin so thin the fine lines beneath showed through. Every time she lifted a brick, she scratched a mark across its edge with a stone stylus — a code of her own devising: the mark’s position on the brick told her which kiln batch it had come from, which sand-lime mix had been used in its mortar, and which ledger entry corresponded to its firing data. The marks were shallow — so shallow they would not affect the brick’s structural integrity — but anyone who knew how to read them could find, from that single scratch, the full record in Shafi’s filing cabinet. She had not told anyone about this system. She had not needed to. The bricks, when they were laid, carried their own history — a history that could be read back, brick by brick, from the wall itself.

When Imset reached the old-city branch hall, Shafi had just finished pressing a brick into the last course of one wall. The mortar formula was the same one used at the main hall — but the old-city shallow well water was alkaline, so the mortar here cured slower, and its final strength was slightly lower. Shafi had adjusted the formula: one extra part of fine riverbank sand, half a part less water, a longer mixing and setting time. The brick courses were roughly two finger-widths off the main hall’s standard — she had done it deliberately. Adding two extra bricks would disperse the saline-alkali pressure against the wall face. After she had finished tapping down the mortar, she stood back and looked at the wall for a long time — she was, in her own way, speaking to the wall. Imset reached out and pressed a thumb against the joint between two bricks — not the brick, but the mortar. The mortar had already set; his thumb left only a small depression, no crumbling. He wiped the dust from his thumb onto his own tunic, walked out of the pharmacy, paused at the doorway, and said over his shoulder: ”This wall — it will hold.” Then he walked on. The masons behind him looked down at the brick joint he had pressed — and found, on every mortar line, the same shallow thumbprint.

On the night before the handover, Lu Zhu set up a wooden board in the main hall’s courtyard and spread out the branch halls’ inspection checklists, one beside the next. Every checklist carried his own charcoal-signature mark: the seal of the ”Master Builder.” The signature was his fingerprint — pressed into the paper after dipping his finger in charcoal dust. No stamp, no seal — just the whorls and ridges of his own skin, pressed into the fibers of the papyrus, a pattern that no one could forge. Someone asked him why. ”A fingerprint,” he said, ”is unique — a stamp can be stolen and a seal can be counterfeited. My finger — there’s only one.” He said it lightly, as if he were joking. But no one in the room thought he was. When Lu Zhu pressed his fingerprint onto paper, the charcoal dust left a fine, sharp impression — every line unique — just as every foundation he had drawn had its own bearing stratum.

On every inspection checklist, beneath the final entry, there was one additional line — left blank. It read: ”Medicine sufficient — a further supply is on the way.” This line was not signed by Lu Zhu; it was signed by the duty physician at each branch hall on the first day of dispensing. Lu Zhu pushed the wooden board back against the wall, then turned and climbed the high ground of the adobe-brick drying yard. From there, he stood and looked — from a single vantage point — at all three branch halls at the same time. In the direction of the old city, a single lamp still burned — Shafi was still working through the herb inventory, her shadows passing across the shelves one row at a time, her fingers checking each jar’s seal. In the direction of the north bank, an oil lamp hung from the perimeter wall — Seb, making his nightly patrol, checking the water-pipe joints, crouched beneath the wall, examining every coupling, confirming that not a single joint was leaking. The riverbank direction was dark — only the ferrymen’s torches moved on the stone quay, their yellow flames reflected in the black water, a line of light snaking across the surface. On the ferry crossing, an old man still sat writing something by the glow of a firefly — what words, no one could see.

When Lu Zhu tucked his charcoal into its leather case, his finger brushed a raised ridge on the inside of the case — the ridge where the leather grain had been worn down by years of friction. The ridge was fine — as fine as the warp and weft of a weaving-workshop loom. Lu Zhu’s fingertip traced it for a moment, then stopped. He pulled the riverbank branch hall’s checklist from the pile on the wooden board, and in the blank space beneath the final item, wrote a single character: ”Gate.” The ”gate” was written small — slightly off-center — a door that had not yet fully closed. It was waiting. Waiting for a real opening — the first patient to walk through it, the first lamp to be lit inside, the first life to be confirmed within its walls.

On the morning of the second day, the old-city branch hall was the first to open. Not because the old-city crews worked faster — but because the old-city slum quarter woke earliest of all. The quarry laborers had to be at the quarry intake before first light; their wives had to be at the riverbank laundry before the sun rose. The slum quarter was already stirring — footsteps, the clatter of water jars, the scrape of tools being gathered — while the sky was still dark. The first person to stand at the branch-hall gate was not a patient — it was a boy of about seven or eight, carrying a small bundle of reed stalks in his arms. One of his legs was splinted with old cloth — the bone had been broken and set, but the splint was loose, and the leg wobbled when he walked. He did not have a medicine tag, and he did not have a queue number. The reed stalks — they were wild chrysanthemum shoots he had gathered from the riverbank that morning, the mud from the roots still wet, the dew not yet dried. ”These are for you,” he said. He set the mud-coated reeds on the stone slab beside the pharmacy door, then pressed his hands against his own chest — his fingers, gripping the cloth of his tunic, were too tight, the knuckles white. ”The medicine helped me last time. I got better. I — these — ”

Shafi saw the reeds from inside the pharmacy. She did not go out. She did not tell the boy ”the healing hall does not accept payment.” She had the reeds brought in, laid on an empty slot in the sunlight beside the pharmacy, and on the day’s intake log she wrote a single character: ”Accepted.” The character was pressed heavier than usual — the charcoal’s tip scoring a shallow groove into the leather. Then she took a small bundle of dried mint leaves from the pharmacy cabinet — part of the surplus that Meru had transferred from the official warehouse, the batch reserved for patients who could not afford medicine. She handed the mint to the boy. ”Go home and steep it in boiled water. Drink it if you feel the cold coming on.” The boy took it, and the mud from the reeds he had been carrying left a dark, wet smear on the stone counter of the pharmacy door. Shafi looked at the mud but did not wipe it away. The mud stayed on the counter until the first rain of the rainy season washed it away — and by then, it had already become something else. In that moment, though, it was only a smear of mud — and it was the first mark of ”payment” the healing hall’s pharmacy had ever received.

In the days after the old-city branch hall formally opened, the other two branch halls opened in their turn. The person standing at the north-bank branch hall’s gate was Nefer. She was not wearing her work apron — she had on the coarse linen tunic she had been wearing the morning the first bricks were laid at the camp, the one that still carried the scuffs of the foundation line. She stood at the gate not because she needed to ”manage” anything. She stood there because the north-bank branch hall sat against the rear wall of the weaving workshop — the women at the looms, the communal kitchen, the patients being carried on stretchers — all of them crossed paths at this single point. The pharmacy women at the branch hall, every one of them, had been trained at the weaving-workshop looms — the branch hall’s linen supply was the weaving workshop’s linen supply, and the measuring rod she used to check the quality of the bandages — every measurement checked against the main hall’s standard, every rod cut perfectly true — had been her own. She did not announce this to anyone. ”The branch hall’s pharmacy — the linen yardage in the treatment ward — don’t over-draw it, and don’t leave it short,” she said to Seb. She said this while still holding a weaver’s reed hook — the hook that checked the warp tension, its tip worn to a fine, needle-sharp point — and she did not look up.

The riverbank branch hall opened late — not because the construction was delayed, but because a tributary of the ferry-crossing channel had shifted course. The first shipment of linen from Thebes could not be unloaded until the water level rose high enough to reach the stone quay. The ferrymen had been standing in the wind for an entire morning, and the captain who held the tung-oil-soaked mooring rope — the rope that had been prepared for the branch hall’s opening — had tied it off on the ferry-crossing bollard ten paces from the branch hall’s gate, one end on the bollard, the other on the branch hall’s ridge beam. Every morning, he checked the rope — it had not loosened. The captain knew it was right, because the first boat that had come in on the branch hall’s opening day — it had come from the overland route, not the river. He did not say this to anyone. He simply tightened the knot one more turn and went back to his work.

A timber-barge carpenter was carried in from across the river — four men carried the stretcher. By the time he reached the riverbank branch hall, the wound on his thigh had already gone sour, the suppuration so advanced that the pus had soaked through the strip of cloth tied below his knee — the cloth his own family had torn from an old tunic to bind the wound. The cloth was now glued to the wound, inseparable, the fabric and the flesh a single fused mass. The four stretcher-bearers — two carrying, two steadying — had walked the long road from the ferry crossing to the branch hall, the wounded man’s blood dripping behind them all the way, a dark, unbroken line across the pale gray sand. The duty physician at the riverbank branch hall was an old military surgeon who had come from Thebes — he had run a small medicine stall outside the city walls during the Theban siege, treating wounded soldiers on both sides, asking no questions. His apprentice helped carry the stretcher into the treatment room. When they peeled back the cloth, the wound was already saturated. The stench of pus and blood and river-water mud rose so thick that the pharmacy woman outside pressed her sleeve to her nose. The old surgeon did not frown. He had the woman open every window — then he pulled out a bundle of dried yarrow from the shelf and, following the method outlined in Imset’s treatment standards, wrote the line: ”All fabric making contact with a suppurating wound shall be first soaked in clean boiled water, then boiled, then sun-dried.” He dipped clean saline water, brewed from the salt Shafi had measured out, and began irrigating the wound. When the last strip of embedded cloth came away, his fingertip paused at the wound’s edge — a tiny splinter of wood, a shard from the timber barge, lodged between the muscle and the fascial membrane, its edges black with decay. He looked up and met the wounded man’s eyes. The carpenter’s lips were cracked and dry, but he shook his head faintly — he did not want to cry out. Then he closed his eyes and braced himself.

”Bite down on this piece of wood.” The old surgeon handed a block to the apprentice, then turned back to the carpenter. To the carpenter he said: ”You — go outside and wait. The splinter is shallow — one pull and it’s out.” When he said those words, his hand was steady — but his fingers, gripping the copper forceps, paused for the space of a single breath. The hesitation was invisible — a fraction of a heartbeat, the time it takes a man to decide he is ready. When the splinter came out, the wounded man did not scream. No anesthetic — only the old surgeon’s fingers and the pair of copper forceps that had been boiled in scalding water. The man bit down on that block of wood — bit down until the wood grain left deep impressions in his teeth, impressions so deep that the outermost fibers began to split, and at the deepest impression, a thread of blood-colored stain seeped along the grain. He did not cry out. He just bit — bit down the way a man bites down on a rope when the only thing holding him to the world is the pressure of his own jaw. When the splinter came out, the old surgeon held it up to the lamplight — one face smooth, the face where the carpenter’s flesh had been grinding against the wood, and the other face rough, the face where the bone had been. He set the splinter to one side and began closing the wound. The needle he used was the same needle Imset had sent from the old medical texts — boiled, sun-dried, checked for burrs — and the thread, the thread was flax fiber from the weaving workshop, each strand tested for tensile strength by the linen-supply room women. When he tied the last suture, the old surgeon glanced down the branch hall’s main corridor — the rope — the rope that the captain had tied — was still swaying gently in the river wind. One end on the bollard, one end on the ridge beam. And Shafi, on the riverbank branch hall’s drawings, drew one more line — a line from the river to the medicine shelves. She did not label it ”critical” on the drawing. But when she drew it, her charcoal pressed deeper than on any other line she had drawn that day. She knew: that line, once it was on the drawings, meant someone — someone from across the river — someone who was bleeding right now — would follow it back.

On the same day, the old-city branch hall treated a child with febrile convulsions. The mother had carried the child for over half a watch to get there — and by the time she arrived, the child had already begun to seize, his jaw locked so tight that a thread of blood-tinged saliva ran from the corner of his mouth, his back arched, his limbs rigid. The duty physician at the old-city branch hall was also a Theban — a former temple physician who had been expelled for the crime of writing his prescriptions in vernacular rather than in the formal language of the canons. He had a strip of dried chamomile pressed against the child’s tongue, and then he sent the mother running to the main hall for the medicine — ”Dried chamomile — the jar on the third shelf from the left, the one with the red cord tied around the neck.” By the time the mother brought it back, the child’s convulsions had stopped — though the fever had not yet fully broken, and the child’s head still lolled against the mother’s shoulder. The physician had the mother lay the child on an observation mat, and every half water-clock he checked the child’s forehead and the pulse behind the ear. On the fifth check, his fingers found a hard, immovable lump behind the child’s ear — a swollen lymph node, positioned at the mastoid prominence. It was firm — as firm as a small stone embedded beneath the skin. He went back to Imset’s treatment-standard leather sheets and found the corresponding entry: ”Unilateral hard mass behind the ear at the mastoid — with febrile convulsion — consider retromastoid abscess — observe closely; if the abscess is not opened, the swelling may extend inward and endanger the patient.” Shafi was not at the old-city branch hall — she was in the north-bank branch hall checking a pharmacy inventory, counting the dried wormwood bundles at the bottom of a crate, one by one, her fingers moving without pause. But the old-city apprentice — the boy who had been stationed at the north-bank branch hall — he had seen the lump behind the child’s ear. He climbed onto the pharmacy counter, reached for a small jar on the top shelf — a jar of dark, almost black paste — the topical preparation Imset had taught him, the one from the old medical texts, designed for fascial inflammation. Its formula contained finely ground dried mustard and a wild herb that grew only in the marshy lowlands of the riverbank. When the paste was applied, the child cried out once — then went still. It was not the stillness of fever — it was the stillness of relief, of a body finally releasing a pain it had been holding for too long. The child managed to swallow, and the sputum that came up was a sickly yellow-green, flecked with dark matter — but once it was out, his breathing eased. The apprentice caught the sputum on a clean reed leaf, studied it, and wrote a note in the child’s intake ledger. He did not know who would read that note later — but he wrote it anyway.

The old-city branch hall admitted forty-three patients on its opening day. The north-bank branch hall admitted thirty-six. The riverbank branch hall admitted twenty-one. Included in those numbers were the timber-barge carpenter and the child who had convulsed. In total, the three branch halls admitted one hundred and two patients on their first day. That night, after the last lamp had been extinguished at each branch hall, the duty physicians gathered the day’s intake records — written on sheets distributed by Shafi, each sheet bearing a branch-hall code and a date — and signed their names at the bottom of each page. Not stamps. Names. From the very first article of Imset’s treatment standards, every duty physician assigned to a branch hall had been required to learn to sign their own name — not because the officials demanded it, but because ”a signature and a stamp carry different legal force. A signature means you are accountable. A stamp only means that someone once held the stamp.” That night, across the three branch halls, the physicians who had come from Thebes — men who had spent decades grinding herbs and setting bones but had never signed anything in their lives — bent over their tally sheets and, with painstaking, crooked strokes, wrote their names. Some had to learn to hold the charcoal — their fingers, used to gripping herb bundles and pressing poultices, were clumsy and uncertain around a writing stick. But every one of them wrote. Slowly, carefully, each stroke deliberate. And every one of them, when they finished, pressed the charcoal down harder on the final stroke — the way a man who has just driven the last stone into place leans on his hammer.

When Shafi received the intake records at the main hall, she did not summarize them. She called Tia over, and the two of them sat beneath the north wall until the lamp had burned nearly through. They laid the four ledgers — the three branch-hall logs and the main hall’s own — side by side, and checked them entry by entry. The old-city branch hall had one entry where a jar of yarrow paste was noted as dispensed eight times — but the tally only showed seven. The north-bank branch hall had two entries where the medication log and the treatment record did not match — the physician had written the medicine name but had forgotten to write the dispensing time. The riverbank branch hall’s intake numbers matched its discharge numbers — but the patient who had arrived last had a name no one could read: the ferry-crossing wind had been too strong that day, and the charcoal had smeared across the page, leaving the characters as a ghostly blur. The wooden wedge on the counter, the one holding the tally sheets down, had also come loose — and when it slipped, the tip of the wedge skidded across the stone countertop and did not stop until it struck the wall.

Shafi recorded every anomaly on a fresh sheet of leather. When she reached the tally-entry error at the old-city branch hall, she paused — then drew a small circle beside ”Herbal Inventory — Dispensed / Registration Error” — the same kind of circle she always drew when she needed a follow-up verification. The circle meant: ”There is still a question waiting to be answered.” She did not write the answer — because she did not yet have it. She drew the circle, then pinned the leather sheet on Imset’s workshop door — held down with a stone. Then she went back to the pharmacy. The lamp on the pharmacy counter was already burning low, its wick pulled nearly to the bottom of the oil. But the ceramic jars on the shelves — in the lamplight, they caught a faint reflection — a constellation of tiny glints, scattered across the dark, each one a pinpoint of light. Shafi kept writing — the intake totals, all the way to the final entry. When she finished writing the last character, the tip of the charcoal caught on a tiny imperfection in the leather and left a small, sharp notch. The charcoal had worn too far — the core was done. She picked up a fresh stick, wrote that character again, and then tucked the spent stub into a small pottery jar on the counter. The jar already held a fistful of worn charcoal stubs — every one of them blunted by writing, each stub a record of a night when someone had stayed up too late, filling out reports — a tiny, mute graveyard of all the hours the healing hall had not yet slept.

On the second day, the Theban sub-priests’ rumor — ”The Akhetaten healing hall’s medicine is all rotten” — had, in the span of a single morning between the branch halls’ completion and the loss of its fear-power, simply collapsed. Not because the officials suppressed it — the sub-priests had, of course, not stopped. They had begun spreading a new version at the ferry crossing: ”Those medicines — they’ll turn your bones to ash.” The new version had a new detail, a new visceral image — ”bones to ash” — conjured with a storyteller’s instinct for the body’s deepest dread. They had found their opening: complaints about branch-hall medicine prices were fewer than complaints about the main hall’s. Not because the branch halls’ medicine was cheaper — but because the branch halls were closer. They saved the cost of a road — a road that, before, had eaten a full day’s wages just in shoe-leather. Medicine fees that had once seemed impossibly high now came within reach — not because the price had dropped, but because the distance had shrunk. The branch halls’ price tags were, naturally, still visible — but the quarreling over numbers had become quieter. Because the people standing in line had, one by one, done the same calculation in their heads: the road to the branch hall was the same road they walked every day — past the well, past the weaving workshop, past the neighbor’s door — and on the way, they could pick up their queue number, their medicine, and their child, and be home before the midday meal. The cost saved — in time — was worth more than the coppers in their hands.

The quarry stonemasons in the old-city slum quarter were the first to do the sums. Before, going to the main hall for a consultation meant taking a morning off work — the lost wages from a half-day’s labor, plus the medicine fee, plus the cost of the flatbread and water for the road. Now, the branch hall was at the crossroads by the weaving workshop. The stonemason went to work as usual; on his way home, he swung by the branch hall, picked up his queue number, signed his name, and took his medicine. The cost of the missed work — the ”time cost,” as the stonemason put it — had vanished. Meru, seeing the stonemasons’ ledgers, wrote a term in the blank margin of the branch-hall pricing ledger: ”time cost.” It was a term that had never appeared in an Akhetaten account book before, but once the stonemasons started using it, the concept spread — silently, without announcement — through the entire laboring population of the camp.

The branch halls’ medicine stocks were, in truth, stretched. The main hall’s inventory, divided three ways across the branch halls, was, by Shafi’s calculation, thinning faster than the supply lines could replenish it — ”one more month at the current dispensing rate,” the bottom line read. But Meru had said: the official-warehouse grain prices — they really had dropped. The single entry ”official-warehouse sale price allocated to medical supply” had already reached the main hall’s stores — in dried fish from the river, in flatbread from the communal kitchen, in portions of grain that could be ground into gruel and fed to a child who could not swallow solid food. Some of these came from Lu Zhu’s water-pipe expansion; some came from Meru sitting at the Thebes docks, renegotiating the Nubian medicinal-herb contracts — the same herbs that, until recently, had been sold through private Theban merchants at triple the river-trade price. Traders who had fled the city when the war news broke had come back — not because the war was over, but because the trade routes they had abandoned still had their goods sitting on the docks, the jars of dried herbs untouched, the contracts still uncanceled. Meru, on hearing this, had not hesitated. He had gone straight to the docks and spent an entire night in a river-trade warehouse, chewing dried flatbread and drinking river water, waiting for the Nubian medicine merchant’s caravan to arrive. The merchant came at last — and when he did, Meru had the contract signed — on the same crude paper he had drafted himself across his knees, the same paper that bore no official seal, only the thumbprints of the two men who had agreed to trust each other. The prints — one deep, one shallow. Meru’s thumb had been worn smooth by years of gripping charcoal; his print was shallow, the ridges nearly illegible. The Nubian’s thumb was coated with tung oil; his print was deep, every whorl sharp and clear.

At the bottom of the contract, beside the itemized prices and delivery dates, Meru added a note in his own hand: ”Prices offered by Thebes medicine merchants that exceed the rates set for government-warehouse medicine allocation — such premiums, once verified, constitute exploitative pricing. The Akhetaten healing hall reserves the right to purchase directly from Nubian producers, and any price fluctuation shall not exceed one-tenth of the current market rate.” This was the contract language he had learned during the embargo — before, he had never used a formal medicine contract; all his river-trade deals had been sealed with a handshake and a promise, unwritten, unenforceable. The Nubian trader studied the clause for a long time, his brow tightening — then looked up at Meru and, tapping the contract with work-roughened fingers, said: ”You — you actually understand this.” It was not a question. It was a recognition — the recognition of one man who had been cheated by middlemen for decades, looking at another man who had decided, in the quiet of his own mind, that he would never be cheated again. Meru did not smile. He added one more clause: ”If the selling price falls, the buyer shall bear the loss — if the final delivery is spoiled, the seller shall compensate at five times the original price.” The Nubian read it again, his eyes lingering on the last line, and then — without another word — unscrewed the lid of a small vial of smoky incense oil and pressed it into Meru’s hand. It was the highest grade of Nubian incense — the kind reserved for temple offerings. ”This first shipment — no charge. Get the medicine to the patients first. Once the route is open — then we’ll settle accounts.” He turned and walked back into the hold of his boat. He did not look back.

Meru carried the contract and a small vial of incense oil back to Akhetaten. By the time he arrived, the riverbank branch hall’s mooring rope had already been inspected and re-secured by Shafi and Lu Zhu. The rope — the rope they had chosen — was the one with the snapped end, the end that had been spliced back together with a new length of cord, the splice tied with a knot Lu Zhu had learned from an old sailor — a knot that tightened as it was pulled, each turn binding the next, the rope growing stronger the harder the wind blew. Shafi had learned the knot at the ferry crossing — but her teacher was not a ferryman. It was an old woman from across the river — a grandmother, recently arrived, who had come to the north-bank branch hall for a throat ailment and, while waiting for her medicine, had noticed the gap in the pharmacy shelves. She had taught Shafi the knot — a water-knot, she called it, passed down from her grandfather’s grandfather. ”This knot — you pull it once, it holds. Pull it again, it holds tighter.” She taught it slowly — demonstrating each step with her own rough, calloused fingers, repeating every motion three times. Shafi learned it, then practiced it over and over — until she could tie it with her eyes closed, in the dark, as naturally as breathing. And then — on that very night, in the dark — that knot held the riverbank branch hall and the ferry crossing together. The only thread between them.

On the morning of the fifth day, a new leather sheet appeared on the main hall’s registration wall — the revision wall that Shafi had built. It was Seb who drew it. On a sheet of coarse, dark brick-colored leather — the same kind of leather he used to wrap his stone chisels — he drew a distribution map of every public works facility in Akhetaten. Three branch halls. One main hall. Five official warehouses. Two drainage channels. Four public water-drawing points. One stonemasons’ guild processing yard. Three public roads. Beside every point, he wrote a small inscription — ”Daily Inspection Route,” ”Person Responsible for Spot Repairs,” ”Date of Next Scheduled Maintenance.” And beside every point — every single one — he drew a number. No one had assigned him this task. The number beside each branch hall’s entry was linked to a specific question: ”Branch-hall pharmacy ventilation slots — who cleans them? Branch-hall pharmacy roof reed mats — who replaces them?” He had thought of these questions while patrolling the north-bank branch hall’s water-pipe joints. He had noticed: the north-bank branch hall’s ventilation slots — designed by Shafi, clogged by dust, the narrow slots set into the wall — had already accumulated enough debris in the few short weeks since the branch hall had opened that the airflow was noticeably reduced. The duty physician could not spare anyone to clean them — the man was seeing over forty patients a day, from morning to night, without a single break. The pharmacy women were not responsible — their job was dispensing herbs and recording the ledgers; no one had ever told them that cleaning ventilation slots was also their job. Shafi could not do it herself — she was already bearing the weight of all three branch halls. And the things no one’s job description covered — those things were the things no one did. Left unattended, within a month the airflow would drop by a third; within two months, the pharmacy’s humidity would rise above the safe threshold, and the dried herbs on the shelves would begin to lose their potency before they could even be dispensed. No one had noticed this because no one’s job description included the line: ”Check and clean the branch-hall pharmacy ventilation slots.”

Seb stood beneath the north-bank branch hall’s pharmacy wall, beside the ventilation-slot opening, for a very long time. The mortar in the bricks here had been laid well — the workmanship was not the issue. The issue was that no one had been assigned to maintain it. A well-built slot, left unchecked, would clog as surely as a poorly built one — it would just take slightly longer to fail. And by the time it failed, the cost of repairing it would be many times higher than the cost of cleaning it regularly. He cut a rough timber board — assembled from the scrap of dismantled packing crates — and on it he wrote out the entire sequence of how the timber-pallet structure had been assembled, and beside it, he drew a diagram of the water debris that had accumulated in the channel. He used a stone stylus — the same tool he used to mark quarry stone. The stone’s point pressed into the wood, and the marks it left — white against the dark grain — would not fade in the rain, would not lift in the sun, would not be washed away by the river wind. He carried the board back to the stonemasons’ guild processing yard, then hung it on the main hall’s north wall — the revision wall — right beside Shafi’s ”Branch-Hall Pharmacy Registration Sheets.” At the same height. The same position.

”This — this needs to be managed.” Seb said it to Lu Zhu. And when he said it, his thumb was rubbing the edge of that brick-colored leather sheet — the sheet he had cut himself from the stone-yard waste pile. The edges were rough, the cut uneven, the surface unfinished. But the words on it — the words were solid. The coarser the leather, the harder it was to fake. A sheet with clean, even edges could be replaced. A sheet with ragged, torn edges — every tear was unique, like a fingerprint.

Lu Zhu said nothing. He simply took the brick-colored leather sheet and, with his stone stylus — the same one he had used to scribe the water-pipe plan — carved a line into the surface that no amount of charcoal could duplicate. The stone bit into the leather, leaving a groove as pale and permanent as a scar. He traced it twice — once to mark the line, once to deepen it. Then he walked back to the wooden board, pulled out a flat plank of cedar — a failed brick-mold backing plate from one of the kiln-yard batches, the wood already carbonized by the heat, its surface hard and resistant — and with charcoal, wrote a single line in large, block characters across its face: ”Public works facilities — every completed work shall be assigned a maintenance custodian. The assigned custodian shall be recorded by name.” Then he carried the plank to the main hall’s entrance and leaned it against the north wall. When the plank met the wall, it struck with a single, sharp report — like a door closing and, in the same motion, a door opening.

On the afternoon of the same day, Akhetaten’s first formal public-works daily maintenance roster was pinned to the stonemasons’ guild processing yard’s gate. The roster was not Lu Zhu’s work — it had been drafted by Seb, and every item on it — every single maintenance task — had been checked against the construction protocols that Seb and the quarry laborers had developed during the guild’s first months. Each task, between the pre-shift inspection and the shift supervisor’s sign-off, had to clear a buffer window equal to one full water-clock measure. The content of the roster was simple: inspect, record, minor repair. The definition of ”minor repair” was written into the final line of the roster: ”Faults that can be resolved within the same day, without halting primary operations — carried out directly; faults requiring primary operations to be suspended — reported to the stonemasons’ guild construction team immediately.” The laborers who had been assigned to the maintenance roster quickly realized that the ”inspections” were the kind of work no one had ever been paid for. Seb pinned the roster to the gate and — when some of the men’s faces darkened, when one of the younger laborers threw his trowel down and said ”We didn’t sign up for unpaid work” — he did not argue. He simply reached into the bottom of his toolbox and pulled out a ledger — the ledger Lu Zhu had given him after the stonemasons’ guild was founded. The Unified Pricing Labor Value Table. Every public-works project that the guild had ever undertaken was listed in that ledger, and every listing included a fixed percentage — drawn from the project’s final payment — reserved for the first year’s maintenance costs. Seb pressed his fingertip against the number and ran it down the column. ”This money — it’s always been there. It was built into the construction cost. It was only waiting for someone to start collecting it.”

Beneath the roster, pressed against the door frame, was a new sheet of rules. These had been written by Shafi. They read: ”The branch halls’ ventilation-slot cleaning, drainage-channel silt removal, and public road surface inspection shall be carried out once daily by the branch-hall duty pharmacy boy before opening. The riverbank crossing’s public road surface — inspected by the ferrymen, who shall report to the stonemasons’ guild maintenance team when the road surface wear exceeds one-quarter of a finger-width. Communication between the main hall and the branch halls — by leather-sheet dispatch, deposited in the official-warehouse courier box, checked twice daily, morning and evening.” Every item was specific. Every item had a blank space at the end — one space for the executor’s signature, one space for the verifier’s signature. The signatures would be cross-checked against the pharmacy logs and the tally sheets — stamped, not sealed. When Shafi wrote those rules, her charcoal pressed so hard the tip scored the surface of the leather — not from anger, but because she knew that once those characters were on the wall, they would no longer belong to her alone. They would belong to everyone who had to live by them.

The maintenance roster’s impact was quieter than any of the healing hall’s other innovations — quieter than the branch halls opening, quieter than the crowd of onlookers at the gate, quieter than the patient queues that wrapped around the stone-paved road. It began on an ordinary morning. A stonemason cleaned a ”ventilation-slot filter,” and then a second stonemason cleared a drainage-channel debris trap, and then a third — a third picked up a loose stone from the road and pressed it back into place. No one could remember who had started it. No one remembered who had signed the roster first. It simply — at some point, on some ordinary morning — became a habit. The ventilation slots stopped clogging. The drainage channels stopped backing up. The stone steps stopped wobbling underfoot.

On the fourteenth day after the branch halls had all opened, Imset made his second inspection tour. The first tour — he had walked the old-city branch hall alone, and in the slum quarter, the mothers carrying their children had called out to him: ”The head physician of the main hall!” He had stood on the stone-paved road outside the branch hall at dusk, and in the time it took to walk home, he had seen seventeen children — seven with coughs, four with diarrhea, six with low fevers. Every child had been seen by a physician; every child’s record had a number on it. The numbers matched — Shafi’s branch-hall pharmacy registration codes, each code linked to a medicine, a branch hall, a specific storage location. After his tour, Imset did something: he lowered his head and looked at all three branch halls. Not a single one had been abandoned because ”the former High Priest’s curse” had frightened people away. The stone-throwers had come back — they had brought their neighbors and their cousins and their children, and they had stood in line on the very next day after the branch halls opened. Not because they were no longer afraid — but because the neighbor’s child had taken the medicine and the fever had broken, and that night the child had slept sounder than he had ever slept in the shadow of the temple walls. The victory of a child’s sleep over a priest’s curse — that victory was not won with words. It was won because a child had slept through the night. And when one child slept through the night, the next morning, the mother told the neighbor; and the neighbor’s child, who had also been sick, was carried to the branch hall; and that child took the medicine and slept; and then another mother told another neighbor. The chain was invisible — but it traveled faster and deeper than any rumor, because it was carried not on whispers but on the evidence of a child’s forehead, cool to the touch.

Imset noticed something else — something no one had mentioned. On his way back to the main hall, passing the stone-pile where the quarry laborers had once gathered, the same pile where a man had once held a stone in his hand and stood with a crowd, Imset stopped. That stone-pile had been converted — it was now the stonemasons’ guild processing yard. The stones that had once been meant for throwing — those very stones — were now bedded in sand, waiting to be cut. The men who had once stood there with stones in their hands — the same men — were now working at the quarry intake. Their knees still bore the scars of those days; when they walked past the stone-pile, the old memory tugged at their gait, imperceptibly — a hitch, a hesitation. But it was fading. They had been hauling stone now for an entire year. One of them — a quarry laborer — was carrying a stone past the pile when he raised his head and looked at Imset. He did not speak. The stone in his hands — the same weight, the same shape — was not a weapon. It was a block of sandstone, destined for the foundation of a branch hall’s rear wall. He held it, and in that moment — the stone, the same stone, the same hands — the fear that had once saturated those hands had been replaced by a different kind of weight. The fear was not gone — it was still there, in the way he held the stone a little too carefully, in the way his eyes still flicked toward the wall — but it was no longer a fear of the healing hall. It was a fear — old, deep, unreasoning — of the system that had sent the priests, that had paid for the rumors, that had taught men to throw stones. When the laborer reached the old-city branch hall, he saw a small girl sitting on the stone-pile at the quarry intake — her cheeks no longer flushed with fever, her forehead cool beneath a damp cloth. She had been treated — by the man the priests had called a sorcerer — and she was well. The laborer looked at her, and then he looked at the stone in his hands, and then he said — to no one, to the wall — ”She really did get better.” He did not explain why he had said it. He did not need to. The fear that had made him throw a stone — that fear was gone. Not driven out — replaced. Replaced by the fact of a child playing on a stone-pile, her fever broken, her eyes clear. Every cure, every sleeping child, was a stone laid into a wall — a wall that the rumors could not climb, that the priests could not breach, that no amount of curses could bring down.

On the first weekend after all three branch halls were operational, Shafi hung a new leather sheet on the main hall’s north wall. The sheet showed a map — the three branch halls drawn as three small circles, with the main hall as a larger circle at the center. Around each circle, she drew the surrounding communities they served — the catchment radius of each branch hall, the distances from periphery to center. When her brush reached the farthest edge of the map, it stopped. The old-city branch hall’s radius — it had already extended far beyond the range she had originally projected. The farthest patients — people living in a tiny hamlet that could not even be located on the map, a place so remote that the surveyors had never marked it — those people, who lived a full day’s boat journey beyond the old city, had heard about the healing hall. Their boats, when they docked at the ferry crossing, still carried a few dried fish drying on the deck — and on the pharmacy counter, those fish lay beside the medicine jars. They called it ”payment.” Shafi looked at that far edge of the map and, beside it, wrote a small note: ”Approximately one day’s boat journey south of the old-city branch hall — there is a settlement whose name is not yet known.” Then she drew a faint circle around that note — the circle so light it was barely visible. It meant: ”A place we have not yet reached.” She did not know that that settlement, in the months ahead, would become the first outpost in the healing hall’s network — the first place to hear the news not from a priest but from a neighbor, a neighbor who had been carried to the branch hall with a fever and had walked home, on his own feet, three days later. The circle was faint — but it was there. And Shafi, looking at the radius map, set her brush aside. Then she sat down and began to calculate — not the ”end” of anything, but the ”beginning.” The branch halls’ pharmacy stocks — the dispensing volumes had already entered their initial plateau, which meant the medicine supply levels she had previously flagged as urgent were now crossing into a new phase — a new inventory forecast. The ”beginning” was no longer the beginning of the healing hall. It was the beginning of something larger — something whose scale she could already feel, in the numbers, pressing against the edges of her ledger.

”Meru.” She caught Meru at the official-warehouse gate — he had just come back from the grain stores, his water-skin still dripping with the last of the river water, the leather nearly worn through in one spot, the water seeping out in a thin trickle that traced a small river across the ground. She asked when the Nubian medicinal herbs — the ones Meru had contracted for — would arrive in the next shipment. Meru did not answer. He handed his water-skin to an apprentice beside him, then led Shafi to a quieter place — the shaded corner behind the main hall’s exterior wall, a spot that could not be seen from the road, where a pile of sun-dried bricks had been stacked against the corner. What he said came out low and fast: ”Thebes — the news. The Theban sub-priests have already begun building their own private docks.” He kept his voice low — the official-warehouse laborers were still hauling stone nearby, and the crash of stone on stone was loud enough to cover a secret. ”Nekhem is reinforcing the docks — and the perimeter wall — with a private stockade. No approval from the court — not yet. But he has already started.” The word ”private” came out hard — as if he were biting down on a piece of gristle.

The news Meru had brought meant one thing — a thread had been pulled tight. All the medicine-supply routes from Thebes — every single one — were now closed. Not because the goods had stopped flowing — but because the Thebes merchant crews had secretly begun diverting their capital elsewhere. What would happen next — no one was willing to be the first to find out. No one was willing to stand inside a stockade that was being reinforced, on docks that were being rebuilt, waiting for a ship that might never sail. Shafi did not ask about the alternate routes. She only said, after Meru had spoken the name ”Nekhem”: ”That stockade — and those docks — when were the specifications approved? And who, in Thebes, holds the approval?” Her voice was level — the same voice she used when checking a herb’s batch number against the shelf ledger.

”Next month.” Meru dug the charcoal into the mud at his feet, gouging out a rough map — a single line, from Thebes to the south, marking the river-trade route. His thumbnail — the thumbnail he used to scratch the mud — was almost gone, worn down to a tiny sliver by months of scraping grain samples. ”The stockade — the one Nekhem is building on the Thebes river route — it’s not just a wall. It’s a choke point. And the man who built it — he’s waiting for the west to move first.” He paused, then pushed a pebble half a thumb’s-width to the right. ”The real danger — the one that hasn’t moved yet — is in the desert. On the western edge. The Horenheb garrison.”

Shafi looked at the route he had drawn — from Thebes to some point far to the northeast of the desert — and asked: ”How fast is the western edge moving?”

Meru lowered his head and pushed the pebble — the one marking Akhetaten’s position — to one side. With the charcoal, he drew an arrow pointing toward the northeast desert — then pressed down, the tip biting into the mud, and did not lift it. ”Horenheb — his cavalry — is camped on the desert border. They’re stationed on the frontier line, positioned to strike at Thebes from the west on a moment’s notice. As long as Horenheb is out there at the desert’s edge, Nekhem cannot move freely inside Thebes — because Horenheb can ride out of the desert at any time and cut Thebes off from its supply lines. Nekhem’s stockade — his reinforcement of the docks and the wall — is not defense. It’s preparation. He’s waiting for Horenheb to leave the frontier. The day Horenheb withdraws from the border — that is the day Thebes strikes.” He spoke those last words and then fell silent — simply lowered his head and used the toe of his sandal to nudge the charcoal pebble. No more explanation.

Shafi listened, and then she pressed the charcoal down harder — not because she had stopped thinking, but because she had already started thinking about something else. She had been turning a question over in her mind — the question of what would happen to the branch halls’ medicine stocks if the war came. Nekhem had already reinforced his stockade — the priests were waiting. Waiting, while Horenheb still held the desert frontier, for that frontier to fall. When it fell — when the war began — every road, every trade route that had been painstakingly rebuilt over the past months, would be cut in a single day. This was not speculation. This was not ”if.” This was ”already.” She let the charcoal drop and, wiping her hands on the edge of her apron, stood up. Her voice, when she spoke, was steadier than before: ”Then we need to start preparing now.”

She did not say ”prepare” looking at Meru, nor did she say it still thinking about the medicinal herbs they had just been discussing. She said ”prepare” meaning the branch halls’ pharmacy emergency-reserve protocols — meaning the rainy season, meaning the desert winds, meaning the war. Because war meant that every dose of medicine the healing hall held in its stores — for an entire month — would have to last the branch halls without a single resupply. Not ”until things improve” — but ”through the worst.” Meru did not argue. He picked up the lump of charcoal — it was hard, very hard — and held it in his mouth for a long time. It was too dry; he chewed it several times before he could break it down enough to swallow, and then he held it there — in his mouth — for a long moment. Then he said: ”Let me go and ask at the docks.”

He had already — in a previous life, it seemed — been to the Nubian docks during the medicine embargo, on a night much like this one. And what he had said then — ”I’ll go and ask at the docks” — was the same thing he was saying now. The same words. The same promise. The same man. Shafi heard him say it — and in that moment, the same words, spoken by the same man, in a different crisis, with the same weight — something in her softened. Not hope — something harder than hope. The knowledge that whatever was coming, someone would be at the docks, asking.

She stayed at the main hall’s north wall until late that night. Beneath the map showing the ”Branch-Hall Catchment Radius,” beneath the timber wedge that held it in place, she pinned a new leather sheet. The handwriting was hers — though by now her arm was so tired the charcoal wavered, and the characters leaned slightly where her grip had loosened. The sheet was labeled ”Old-City Branch Hall — Pharmacy Replenishment Registration — Emergency Reserve.” The entries on the sheet — Meru’s written summary of the Thebes news — she had placed on the front. Not separated from the dispensing records, but beside them — because they were, in the end, the same thing. On the same day the branch halls had opened, the threat that had been building on the far side of the river had finally reached the wall.

Imset wrote one more line, then held the sheet up to the oil lamp and examined his own fingerprints — the impressions, pressed into the leather from holding the charcoal too long, had left faint, oily smudges at the edge of the sheet. He walked out to the small herb garden — the garden that an old woman had planted in the dry-riverbed wetland before the branch halls opened. The herbs had been cut back — the leaves taken for medicine — but the roots were still in the ground, and the new shoots, tender and pale, were pushing up through the dark soil. He was not looking at the garden for the garden’s sake. He was looking at it from an angle — an angle that let him see, simultaneously, the roofs of all three branch halls — the pale curves of them, rising against the darkening sky. Every evening at this hour, Shafi would take the branch halls’ pharmacy tally sheets out of her carrying case and walk the same road — the same position, the same route — and the sweat beneath her arm would dampen a small patch on the edge of the leather sheets.

She was already there. Imset did not see her at first — he only heard, from the direction of the herb garden, the soft rustle of leather sheets being pressed down under stones. She pressed the sheets flat — pressed them until they were secure — and then she looked up. Imset was standing at the far end of the garden. She did not speak. She simply waited.

Imset did not explain. ”The plant supply from Thebes — the shipments may be cut off. Plant more.” He said only that — and then, as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world, as if he were discussing the weather or the morning queue: ”When the war comes — the branch halls’ medicine supply from Thebes may be cut off entirely. The plant supply — you need to plan for the branch halls to continue operating independently. Two, maybe three branch halls — operating at full dispensing — how much do you need to plant?” He did not wait for her to answer. He simply nodded and turned away, heading back toward the workshop. The question hung in the air between them — not a demand, but an equation, one he had laid out as calmly as he would lay out a line of stone. She picked up a stick of charcoal and began scratching calculations on a flat stone — the same kind of stone the masons used for leveling. The branch halls’ different dispensing volumes — their different consumption rates — the riverbank branch hall pulling more, the old-city branch hall pulling less, the north-bank branch hall pulling the most of all. She drew lines between them — measuring the distance to the water source, the distance to the riverbank, the distance back to the main hall’s stores. When her hand paused at one intersection, it hovered — for a long moment — and then she drew the line anyway. The line connected the branch halls’ consumption rates to the routes Meru would take, the boats that would carry the medicine, the stones that would need to be quarried.

One by one, the branch halls’ lamps went out — each one in its own time. The old-city branch hall’s lamp went out about one watch after nightfall. The north-bank branch hall’s lamp burned for an extra half watch. The riverbank branch hall’s lamp — that lamp did not go out until the last boat had left the ferry crossing. It was not that the branch-hall physicians were simply following the usual daily routine to its end — the routine had been established on the second day after the branch halls opened. That night was the transition — the shift from ”the medical network is complete” to ”the medical network prepares for war.” In that darkness, the only tool the hall had to receive everything that could be predicted — and everything that could not — was time. The calamities that lay beyond the horizon — a day, an hour, a single turning of the water clock — were already approaching, and the boundary between them and the hall could no longer be drawn with certainty.

Shafi walked the road from the old-city branch hall back to the main hall. The road surface — the road Lu Zhu had laid between the drainage channel and the kiln yard — had been washed so many times by rain and river water that the lime residue covering the stones had been ground into a thick, opaque paste, dark and solid. The river at night was ink-black, and on its surface floated a layer of extremely fine phosphorescence — not moonlight; the moon had been swallowed by the sand-haze — but scattered light, the kind that rises from the river’s surface when the water is disturbed by an unseen current, and the light breaks apart into a thousand drifting points. She walked past the riverbank branch hall’s landing pier and heard the new timber planks give a faint, half-muffled groan — not the sound of something breaking, but the sound of something settling into itself. The groan came from the riverbank timber piles, the ones driven into the sand at the edge of the ferry channel — the underwater part of the wood, the part that spent its days being squeezed by the current and the silt and the tiny, grinding pressure of sand against fiber. The post was singing — a road song, a river song, a song of resistance. And Shafi, walking that road at night, her eyes full of the afterimages of the pharmacy apprentice’s running silhouette, was not thinking about ”what had not yet been done.” She was thinking about the leather sheet she had pinned to the north wall — the one she had checked, entry by entry, against the master inventory. And at the very edge of that sheet — at the farthest reach of the map, where the small unnamed hamlet still waited to be found — she had drawn a small circle. In the dark, the circle looked like a question mark. But she knew — and the map knew — that it was not a question. It was a place. And someday soon, someone standing at the main hall’s north wall would read that circle and know — a patient, living there, had already been counted.

She blew out the last lamp herself. Then she walked out of the pharmacy, past the north wall, past the route maps and the inventory tables and the branch-hall coordination charts — all of them, in the dark, indistinguishable — and stood for a moment at the main hall’s gate. The river wind, blowing across the valley, carried the cool, clean scent of the water — and beneath it, something else. Something that had not been there before. The faint, distant smell of smoke — not from the kilns, not from the cooking fires. From the desert. From the west. The wind had shifted.

And on the north wall, beneath all the other sheets — beneath the maps, beneath the ledgers, beneath the treatment standards and the branch-hall rosters — a new leather sheet had appeared. The handwriting was Shafi’s, but the words were Imset’s. They had been written that same night — late, when the last lamp was guttering and the charcoal was worn to a stub. They read: ”The Thebes news — the Theban sub-priest Nekhem has reinforced his private docks and perimeter wall. Horenheb’s garrison remains on the desert frontier. The war has not yet begun. But the war has already reached the wall.”

(End of Chapter 11)
