Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 58: Chapter 7: Chain Planning — One Main Hall, Three Branches

It was the child from the slum quarter south of the old city who set everything in motion.

The old city — it was not really a city. It was a sprawl of makeshift huts on the southern edge of the artisans’ residential zone, the flimsiest shelters huddled downwind of the brick‑drying yard to escape the kiln smoke, which also meant they caught the full force of the riverbank’s windblown sand, the fine grit finding its way into every fold of cloth and every crack in the mud walls. Most of the people who lived there were families of quarrymen and sand‑sifting women — they left before dawn, returned after dark, ate two meals a day, and drank sandy water drawn from a shallow scoop‑well on the riverbank flat, the water always tasting of earth. The child lived in that slum. He was just over three years old, and he had been suffering from diarrhoea for five straight days, his small belly distended and his limbs thin as reeds, his cries growing weaker with each passing hour. His mother first boiled wild plantain leaves she had gathered from the riverbank and gave him the decoction — it did not stop the flux, the child’s body still emptying itself. Then a neighbour gave her a bit of dried yarrow, brought from Thebes long ago, stored for so long that the decoction came out much paler than fresh herb, the colour thin and watery — that did not work either. The mother carried the child in her arms and walked nearly half a watch to the healing hall, her arms aching, her back bent under the weight. Imset examined him, wrote a prescription, gave her the medicine. The child improved for two days — then relapsed, the diarrhoea returning as fierce as before. It was not that the medicine was wrong — it was that the well water he drank every day was the same well the work sheds used. As long as the water was not boiled, no amount of medicine could prevent reinfection. The parasites lived in every swallow, invisible and relentless.

The news reached the healing hall when a woman from the southern slum came for a follow‑up visit and mentioned it to Shafi in passing. She had brought her own child for a sore throat, and as she was leaving, she added, almost as an afterthought, that the little boy was sick again, his mother at her wits’ end. She did not know how long that piece of news would turn in Shafi’s mind. Shafi sat on a wooden stump by the pharmacy door, and on her shelf ledger she drew a rough map of the southern slum quarter in relation to the healing hall — from the farthest hut to the hall, a brisk walk took nearly half a watch; a mother carrying a child would take longer, her pace slowed by the weight and the heat, stopping to shift the child from one arm to the other. When she had finished that small map, she went to find Imset.

”The farthest patients walk nearly half a watch just to get here,” she said, her words as spare as ever, not a single extra syllable, each one placed with the precision of a stone in a wall. ”A child with diarrhoea — the mother carries him for half a watch. By the time she arrives, he is already dehydrated, his skin loose and his eyes dull.”

Imset stood by the ventilation slot in the treatment ward. His lips parted slightly, as if to speak, then closed — the words dying before they could form. Before him, on the north wall where the treatment‑standard leather sheets had been hung seven days earlier, a fine layer of dust had settled, the grey film covering every stroke of charcoal. His finger brushed the edge of one sheet, and the dust came away in a pale gray line, smudging his fingertip. Then he walked to Lu Zhu’s workshop, his steps measured and unhurried.

Lu Zhu was in the workshop, the wooden plan spread before him, the water‑channel alignment drawing half‑finished, the charcoal paused just above the point where the third branch would diverge — the division still undecided, the lines waiting for his hand. Imset stood at the edge of the plan and told him about the child from the south — the mother’s long walk, the relapse, the unboiled water, the thin limbs and the hollow eyes. He spoke plainly, without embellishment, his voice low, each word falling into the silence like a stone into still water.

Lu Zhu set the charcoal down. From under the workbench he pulled out the master plan used when the main hall was completed — the one with every wall and every stake marked, the margins crowded with annotations. He spread it flat, pressing down with his knuckles on the main hall’s position, the bone pressing into the papyrus, then with the fingertips of his other hand he traced southward — to the southern slum; northward — to the northern stretch of the artisans’ residential zone; westward — to the temporary hovels on the riverbank. At each location his fingertip paused for a breath, then moved on, as if his finger were measuring the actual distance across the ground, counting the paces in his head, feeling the contour of the earth through the papyrus.

”How many branch halls are you thinking of?” He did not ask whether they should build branch halls at all. The moment Imset had walked in, Lu Zhu had already confirmed the direction: it was not a question of whether, but of how large — just as he approached any engineering task. First, he drew the most reasonable coverage radius from the main hall; then he matched it with construction procedures and resource allocation, the numbers falling into place like bricks in a course.

”Three.” Imset pointed to three positions on the plan, his finger steady and sure. ”One in the south, near the downwind edge of the slum quarter; one in the north, on the main path through the artisans’ residential zone, close to the weaving workshop and the communal kitchen; one in the riverbank area, near the ferry crossing.” At each place where his finger stopped, he held it for a moment — as if letting that location take root in his mind before he moved on, the image sinking into his memory. ”These are preliminary directions. For the exact sites, you’ll have to walk the ground with me — the southern area needs several passes, because the terrain and the well —”

”The well.” Lu Zhu tapped the southern location on the plan with his charcoal, the black tip leaving a small mark. ”That shallow sand‑filter well across from the slum quarter is a problem. If the new southern branch sits on the same flow of water, patients will cross‑infect each other through the shared supply. Site selection cannot be based solely on walking distance — we have to separate the water sources and the patient traffic patterns, keep the sick from mingling with the clean, the contaminated water from reaching the healthy.”

”So the southern branch should go here.” He drew a circle on the plan, west of the slum quarter, near the southern edge of the brick‑drying yard — a patch of sandy ground mixed with gravel, the surface uneven and dry. ”This area is gravelly sand — water drains fast, no pooling, the ground stays firm even after rain — and it’s upstream of the old well’s outflow. We’ll open a new earth road from the branch to the slum, bypassing the well entirely, so no one has to walk past that contaminated water. Sink a new well — the kiln will have to fire an extra batch of bricks for the lining, the clay turned and fired twice. It’s not far; we’ll be digging foundations anyway.” He said ”digging foundations” in the same flat tone he used for ”firing bricks tomorrow” — as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world, a task like any other. Then he turned back to Imset. ”What about the northern site?”

The northern site selection took an entire morning.

Lu Zhu and Imset walked north from the main hall, past the earthen cooking stove of the communal kitchen, its clay surface blackened with use, past the drying yard of the weaving workshop where lengths of linen flapped in the breeze, past two rows of new single‑storey houses built for the workers’ families — these houses had been designed by Kes, with water troughs at the doorways and clothes‑drying poles in the courtyards, each unit one room and one sitting area, far better than the slum huts, though the walk from there to the main hall still took nearly two double‑hours, the road dusty and long. Along the way, women sat at their doorsteps nursing children, their faces calm; old people washed vegetables at the troughs, the water splashing; and a few children chased each other near the drying yard, their laughter ringing in the dry air, sharp and clear.

Imset stopped at the fork between the weaving workshop and the communal kitchen and stood there for a while, watching. He was not watching the road — he was watching the people, the flow of their movements, the patterns of their daily lives. Women came and went from the weaving workshop, babies strapped to their backs, spinning baskets in their hands, and under the baskets, pressed flat, were reed sandals and dried flatbread wrapped in cloth. They ate at the communal kitchen, worked at the weaving workshop, slept in the houses behind. A woman from the northern area who needed to come to the main hall — for a check‑up, for her child, or for postpartum herbal baths — had to leave her home, pass the weaving workshop where she set down her work, pass the communal kitchen where she entrusted her child’s meal to a neighbour, and then walk south along the earth road for two double‑hours to the main hall, the dust rising under her feet. ”When she walks that stretch with her child, how long does it take? It’s not as far as the southern slum, but she has to stop many times along the way — to adjust the baby’s cloth, to trade a word with a neighbour, to catch her breath — and the more stops, the less she wants to go. So she doesn’t go. And then a minor illness turns into a serious one, the fever climbing, the cough deepening. That’s why we have to put the northern branch at the very fork she must pass between the weaving workshop and the communal kitchen — the southern‑facing crossroads, the one place she cannot avoid.” He pointed to the spot at his feet, the earth packed hard by countless footsteps.

Mery joined the site survey shortly after noon. She had just returned from the riverbank quarry, her boots still caked with wet sand that clung to the leather, and in her hand she held a fresh stone sample taken from the southern bank that morning, the surface still damp. At the northern fork, after listening to Lu Zhu’s proposed locations, she did not voice an opinion. She simply crouched down and pushed at the sandy soil with her palm, feeling its give, the way it shifted under pressure.

”What was this ground used for before?” she asked.

”Empty land,” said a storekeeper, an old man with a lined face. ”Used to stockpile gravel here, years back, before the kilns were built.” Mery glanced around at knee height, her eyes moving across the surface, taking in the high‑low differences between this patch and every other patch — she was not looking at ”empty land”; she was reading the elevation and position, the subtle contours that others missed, the slight rise and fall that told the story of water and time. She stood up and from her sash pulled out the survey board, folded countless times, creased and worn along the folds — the same one she had used when selecting the official‑warehouse sites, on which she had recorded the sand‑layer thickness, bearing capacity, and groundwater depth for every piece of land they had surveyed. Her eyes moved across the marks, checking each number against the ground before her.

”The sand layer here is the thinnest,” she said, pointing at the ground under the northern fork, her finger pressing into the earth. ”In the rainy season, runoff from the northern slope will soak this spot — the water will pool and the foundation will have to be raised to keep it dry, or it will settle and crack.”

She counted off the plots from south to north in her memory — from the first to the fourth — the sand thickness different at each, the groundwater depth varying with the terrain, and she knew which would need fill and which would need oak piles driven in to stiffen the base, the timber sunk deep into the mud. These measurements had been taken during a whole morning of survey work for the granary, every number etched in her mind, every step remembered. She reached the fourth plot and stopped. ”This one is best. The sand layer is thickest — two full cubits of clean, compacted sand. The water table is below four cubits, deep enough that the foundation won’t wick moisture even in the wet season. The foundation won’t need to be raised too high — just one course of stone will do. The stone‑hauling road is closer here, the carts won’t have to travel as far — saving at least a tenth on transport waste, maybe more.” She said ”saving a tenth on transport waste” not as a habitual bargaining tactic, but as a hard‑won instinct from the granary project, where she had paid for every miscalculation with extra labour and lost time, the costs adding up like grains of sand. She had learned the cost of shoddy estimates — and now she would not repeat that mistake on the branch‑hall site.

”The land belongs to someone else,” said Kamon, who arrived at dusk, his shadow long in the fading light. He stood beside a gravel pile on the northern site, his eyes narrowed as he glanced toward a farmstead in the distance where a farmer was adding fodder to his ox’s trough, the animal’s head low. He had spent the whole day at the quarry, his face stinging from stone chips, the fine dust embedded in the lines of his skin, but his thinking was clear, unclouded by fatigue. ”You’ll have to trade for it. Swap land, don’t just take it — that’s how you keep peace in a place like this.” He paused, his thumb jerking backward over his shoulder toward the farmstead. ”There’s a farming family near the weaving workshop — they’re worried about their well running dry, the soil is too parched, nothing grows, the grain turns yellow before it heads. That plot of theirs — we can give them a better plot near the southern irrigation channel in exchange, where the water flows year‑round. Once he agrees, the others will see the benefit, and no one will stop you.”

Lu Zhu looked at him, neither nodding nor shaking his head, his face still. He picked up his charcoal and, on a flat teak board spread on the ground, drew an exchange map — the area swap, the ownership lines, the water rights, and the affiliation of each parcel, every line precise and clear. When he finished, he handed the board to Kamon, signalling him to go negotiate with the farmer, his gesture short and final. Kamon took the board, already sizing up the man’s face and character in his mind — a farmer who had spent half his life tilling dry land, his hands calloused from the hoe, his greatest fear the lack of water; offering him a good plot near the irrigation channel should be enough to win his nod, the promise of green shoots and full baskets. He walked toward the farmer’s hut, his steps unhurried but steady, the board tucked under his arm, his mind already turning over the words he would use.

The riverbank branch site was entrusted to Nefer — the woman physician from Memphis, who specialised in gynaecology and paediatrics, her hands steady and her knowledge deep. She set only one condition, her voice flat and unyielding: ”The branch must be built not far from the ferry landing. Patients coming by boat from the opposite bank can disembark and be seen directly at the branch hall — no need to walk any farther to the main hall, no need to carry a sick child through the sand.”

Lu Zhu stood on the high ground above the ferry landing and studied the water, his eyes tracing the current. The river made a small eddy at this point — the current slowed as it curved, the water swirling gently, and in northern river parlance this was called a ”decompression eddy,” a natural loading and unloading berth where boats could rest without fighting the flow. More importantly, the sandbank outside the eddy had a gentle slope, the angle just right, so boats could pull up without laying a long plank; people could step straight onto firm ground without wading through knee‑deep mud, their feet landing on solid sand. That meant a woman in labour or a mother carrying a child would not have to expend extra effort climbing the bank, their strength already drained by the crossing. He called over a worker and had him draw a marking line along that stretch with a stick of charcoal, then drive stakes every ten paces along the line — the branch hall would stand there, its foundation pinned to the spot.

Lu Zhu’s charcoal drew three outward‑radiating lines on the master plan — the southern branch, the northern branch, the riverbank branch — each line shooting out from the main hall like a spoke from a hub. At the end of each line he drew a small circle, the mark distinct. Between the three circles he drew dashed connecting lines, and above each dash he noted the distance between sites, the numbers written small and neat; another set of dashes linked them back to the main hall, forming a web of connections. In the blank spaces beside each line he wrote the name, orientation, person in charge, and auxiliary material notes: Southern branch — Shafi in charge of pharmacy standardisation, her name underlined twice; Northern branch — closest to the weaving workshop and communal kitchen, Nefer to be stationed there, her rounds scheduled for morning and evening; Riverbank branch — near the ferry, responsible for emergency care for patients from the opposite bank, the first line of defence. The floor plans of all three branches used the main hall’s template uniformly: front consultation area, rear sick ward, side pharmacy, and back processing room — every space measured and marked. They were not as large as the main hall; they retained only the core functions — outpatient consultation, observation, isolation, and pharmacy — cutting away everything that was not essential. Every branch pharmacy would follow the main hall’s ventilation‑slot standards, insect‑proof wall‑gap specifications, and foundation‑raise heights — down to the smallest detail, every measure enforced without exception, the numbers matching exactly.

”The riverbank branch is closest to the ferry — add a heat‑and‑rain insulation layer: a honeycomb cavity wall, the cavity filled with furnace slag to hold the heat and keep out the damp, one plaster coat inside and one outside, the layers pressed smooth. Every year when the rainy‑season water rises, the eddy at the ferry shrinks, and the water presses against the side wall with increasing force; if the pharmacy base is not tightly sealed, the moisture will seep through, the bricks will darken, and the herbs will spoil. The southern branch, near the slum quarter with its mixed water sources and contaminated runoff, needs ventilation‑slot openings half as wide as the main hall’s — the narrow gap will reduce dust infiltration and keep the worst of the grit from settling on the shelves.”

”For the riverbank branch’s wall bricks — after the third course, insert a pressed reed stalk horizontally every third course, the stalks laid straight and even. Its purpose is to distribute the lateral force, to resist the scouring of the wall base by fluctuating water levels and the repeated wet‑dry cycles that weaken the mortar. Brick soaked in water becomes soft and deforms, the edges rounding and crumbling; the reed stalk, embedded like a flexible tendon between the bricks, helps the wall share the expansion and contraction forces, bending with the movement instead of cracking. I used this technique on the upstream ferry wall seven or eight years ago — that wall is still standing today, water‑stained but uncracked, the bricks still sound. The southern branch will not dig a new well; we’ll divert a section of the main hall’s supply pipe, running it underground to keep the water cool. The northern branch will sink its own well — the well to the north, the cesspit to the south, with no seepage between them, ever, the two kept apart by a barrier of packed clay.”

”A branch healing hall is not a work shed — it is a place where patients stay, where they sleep and recover.” He said this without lifting his eyes from the plan, his gaze fixed on the lines, but his finger tapped once on the riverbank branch’s position. The tap was light, yet it carried the habit of testing a structure’s soundness — the same way he checked a wall by striking it with his knuckle — every time he tapped a node on the plan like this, it meant that node was settled. No further changes.

Within three days, the branch‑hall drawings were all pinned to the north wall of the main hall.

The three drawings hung side by side, their corners pressed flat with wooden pegs — pegs whittled from leftover masonry scrap, each a different size and shape, but all pressing with the same force, the pressure even and steady. On every drawing, revisions had been marked in charcoal, the strokes fresh and black: the southern branch had one fewer window than the main hall — the opening blocked off — to help keep the interior warm against the river winds; the northern branch’s waiting area was twice as large as the main hall’s, the space expanded to hold the crowds; the riverbank branch’s pharmacy had one extra row of low shelving — a change proposed by Shafi, who said the riverbank branch would soon receive a flood of fever patients from across the river, and dried chamomile would turn over quickly, the bundles moving in and out like water; low shelving made for faster access than high shelves, the herbs within easy reach.

On the day the three drawings were hung, a row of people gathered before the north wall — Kamon, Meru, Nefer, Sebek, He Lu, and the young priest apprentice, all standing in a loose line. They had not been called, and no one had taken attendance. They had come at different times, each walking over from their own tasks, and they stood there on their own, their eyes moving across the drawings. The drawings on that wall locked together the areas each of them oversaw, their work schedules, the pharmacy standards, the handover rules — no one had given orders, but they all knew that without these drawings there could be no order, no way to coordinate the work of so many hands.

Kamon was the first to leave. He walked along the edge of the crowd toward the southern branch — he had to lead a team of masons there to lay the foundation, his chisel and hammer waiting. It was a two‑hour journey on foot, the road dusty and long; whenever he set out, he would usually stop to sling an extra flatbread over his shoulder, the bread wrapped in a cloth. Today he carried no bread. All he had was the half‑teak board Lu Zhu had drawn for him, marked with the positions of the corner piles, the depth and orientation of each pile, the numbers clear. Tucked into the board was a reed stalk he had picked up at the stone yard, the stalk dry and brown, which he had been pressing under his hand for a long while, ready to use it to mark the ground on site, to scratch lines into the mud.

When he reached the southern slum, he looked at the board and broke the reed stalk into several lengths, each piece matching the spacing of the corner piles. He pushed each fragment into the mud at the four corner‑pile positions, the points marking the corners of the foundation. The riverbank wind set the reed fragments swaying slightly, but the mud held them firm, the stalks standing straight. He crouched by the old shallow well at the edge of the slum, the well mouth ringed with worn stone, and from the well mouth he drew a lime line northward all the way to the branch hall’s foundation wall, the white powder marking a straight path across the earth. ”This well will be sealed later — filled with rubble and capped — until the branch’s supply pipe is connected, no one is to draw water from here. Reroute the water — bring it from the main hall’s channel through the new pipe, and the people will follow the pipe, drawing their water from the clean source.” He said this to the mason assistant beside him, a young man with a scarred forearm, in the same tone he used for unalterable steps in wall‑laying — no discussion, only transmission, no room for ambiguity, every word final.

Back at the main hall, Shafi was doing something she had never attempted in her life.

She copied out the drawings of all three branches onto fresh leather sheets, each bound along the edge with a different‑coloured string — red for the southern branch, blue for the northern, yellow for the riverbank — the colours bright against the pale leather. To each she attached the full pharmacy management standards, written in her small, even hand, including: the template for inbound registration leather sheets, the rules for shelf‑tag numbering, the inspection frequency for ventilation slots, the checkpoints for insect‑proof wall gaps, the dual‑signature system for inventory counts, and the standard for setting minimum‑stock warning thresholds — every rule spelled out without ambiguity.

”The southern branch’s registration starts from 001, the northern from 100, the riverbank from 200 — the prefix will use the branch code, so the three pharmacies will never have duplicate numbers, no matter how many years pass. If one branch ever needs to transfer herbs from another, the number trace‑back can directly identify the original store and movement record — a clear trail from shelf to shelf.” She had discovered this during a recent inventory check — the day before, the southern branch had received a batch of dried yarrow and had casually registered it as 001, the same number already used by the main hall, the error slipping through. Although the error was caught and corrected in time, the ink still wet, Shafi did not treat it as a coincidence. She wrote the numbering rule into the standards, pressing the charcoal deep into the leather, and from then on, each branch’s numbering range was permanently separated — no collisions ever again.

Mery came over from the granary site and saw those branch‑pharmacy standards. The pharmacy management system reminded her of the full‑standard warehousing protocols she had been developing, the shelves and the ledgers all linked. She went through every branch pharmacy drawing from start to finish, her finger tracing between the ventilation‑slot positions and shelf heights, comparing commonalities and differences, her eyes moving back and forth: the main hall’s pharmacy had vents on both the north and south walls, the air flowing through; the branches, being smaller, had vents on only one wall — all oriented downwind to avoid kiln smoke, the openings narrow. She noticed that the lowest shelf height varied among the branches — the southern branch was two finger‑widths higher than the main hall’s, the extra space needed because in the slum quarter the ground absorbed sand and moisture easily, the damp rising through the floor.

”The lowest shelf height — standardise it. Add two finger‑widths to all branches. The riverbank branch needs three finger‑widths — the ground there is wetter, the water table higher.” She said this in the same tone she had used when checking the granary floor bedding at the official‑warehouse site, her voice flat and certain — any issue below the foundation was cheaper to fix in one step than to redo later, the cost of delay too high. ”The southern branch has already done this, the shelf raised and tested; the northern branch’s drawings haven’t marked it yet. If they wait until construction is finished to reinforce it, if they only discover the problem when the shelves wobble, the cost will be several times higher than correcting a single line now — the labour of tearing out and rebuilding, the waste of materials.” That was the lesson she had learned from the granary site: for sandy soil foundations, if you did not reinforce from the start, and you had to tear down and rebuild after two or three months, demolition cost more than new construction, the loss of time and material a double blow.

Shafi added a line at the position Mery indicated, her charcoal moving smoothly. The line ran perfectly parallel to the direction Mery’s finger had traced — no need for a ruler, because the height difference was the same as the vertical and horizontal alignment marks she habitually made when drawing tables for dual‑inventory checks in the main hall pharmacy, her hand trained to the task.

On the southern branch’s drawing, Kamon himself added a line with his stone stylus: a layer of crushed‑stone bedding every cubit below the foundation — river sand was not to be used, the line marked with a firm stroke. He specifically noted the reason in small characters beside the line: riverbank sand contained silt, drained slowly, and the foundation would shift if water pooled, the whole structure sliding sideways; crushed stone, with its interlocking friction and angular edges, held the muddy water at bay much more stably than sand, the gaps between stones allowing drainage while the stones themselves stayed locked. He wrote this note not with charcoal but with a stone stylus, the point sharp against the wood. The stylus was hard enough to score clear grooves into the teak — grooves that would not fade in rain, nor bleach in the sun, nor wear away with handling. It was a quarryman’s habit, his mark of trust in stone over any ink in the face of wind and weather, the stone speaking for itself. Every horizontal line he drew represented the bedding thickness estimated from the weight of the crushed stone — thicker under heavier bearing walls where the load pressed down, thinner under partitions where the weight was less. Every stroke’s depth came from the feel of two decades of hauling stone from quarry pits and stockpiles, a muscle memory burned into his hands, the weight and texture familiar as his own skin.

On the afternoon the northern branch broke ground, the woman from the northern area — the one who had walked two double‑hours with her child to the main hall, her steps heavy with fatigue — walked past the site. She carried her spinning basket on her shoulder, the basket worn smooth, with flatbread and a gourd water bottle inside, and the child in her arms was sucking on a strip of dry cloth, his stomach no longer churning, his colour better. She stood outside the lime line and watched the workers digging the foundation for the time it took to drink a cup of tea, her eyes following their movements. Then she set down her basket, crouched on a stone outside the lime line, and asked nothing. What she asked was not ”What is this?” but: ”When it’s built, we won’t have to walk so far anymore, will we?” — her voice soft, almost a whisper, the question carrying the weight of all those walks.

A sand‑sifting worker heard this and looked up. He saw the child in her arms, drowsy and calm, and then looked at the bare foundation ground, the trenches still empty. He did not understand the complicated lines and annotations on the drawings, the technical markings, nor why Shafi used three colours of string for the pharmacy numbering ranges. But he understood the sound in the woman’s throat when she asked that question — he had two children at home, one still small, and every time he came back late from the site, the youngest, who could not yet walk steadily, would wait at the door for a long time, his small face peering out into the dark. He scooped up a shovelful of coarse sand, picked out a small mussel shell fragment with his fingers, checked its thickness, and tossed it into the waste basket — not to discard it, but to collect it later for road fill; shell fragments in the kiln would make the bricks explode, the heat cracking them from within. He uncorked his leather water‑skin from his belt, took a swallow, the water cool against his dry throat, then tucked it back and went on working, his movements steady and sure.

At the same time, about five hundred paces south of the ferry, the foundation piles for the riverbank branch had already been driven down two, the timber sinking into the sand. The pile‑driver’s mallet struck the tops of the wooden piles, the blows heavy and rhythmic, and the sound travelled far across the riverbank sand, the vibrations carrying through the earth. The old boatman standing on the ferry landing’s stone steps heard those two dull thuds, the sound reaching him through the still air. He leaned against the stone railing, the surface rough under his elbow, cocked his ear, and judged the rhythm: first hurried, then steady — a pattern he knew by heart. He had heard that rhythm all his life — the sound of pile‑driving for boat sheds and mooring berths, the noise of construction along the river. The hurried strikes tested the sand layer’s thickness — shallow sand could be penetrated quickly, the pile sinking fast; if the underlying mud was too deep, more piles were needed, the timber driven further. The steady strikes were compacting the pile shaft — if the pile leaned two or three finger‑widths off plumb, it had to be pulled and re‑driven, the timber reset, or the superstructure would tilt and crack. He said to the young oarsman beside him, a boy with sun‑burned shoulders: ”The pile‑driving over there has settled into a steady beat. That means the sand layer isn’t too thick — the foundation’s good to go, the ground firm underneath.” The young oarsman did not know how to judge the mud thickness from the sound, but he recognised the old boatman’s gesture — the right hand raised to chest height, wrist jerking down with each blow, as if feeling for underwater rocks in the dark, his eyes half‑closed.

Meanwhile, on the small ferry landing on the opposite bank downstream, the overland guide who would later run Meru’s southern medicine‑route — the one who would chart the dry‑land detours, finding the paths between villages — stood on the bank, looking toward Akhetaten, the city a smudge on the horizon. He had been ferrying cargo across this stretch for six years, his face weathered by sun and wind; he knew the wind, the water, and the sand better than he knew his own mules, every current and eddy familiar. He was leading a string of mules across a shallow ford to unload rope at the drying ground, the animals’ hooves splashing in the shallows, when he heard those two hammer‑blows to the north, the sound carrying across the water. He would later become the first witness of many new routes, his knowledge guiding the caravans, but for now he just glanced that way, his eyes narrowing, tugged his lead mule tighter, and said flatly to the animal: ”That direction — you can’t land a boat there, but you can build. The bearing’s right — it’s all sand underneath, the water won’t rise deep even in flood.” Then he gave the mule a light pat, the hide warm under his hand, and headed toward the white‑sand fields.

On the day the foundations of all three branches broke ground simultaneously, a new problem emerged at the north wall of the main hall — the wall that had already borne the treatment standards and now the branch plans, so crowded that the leather sheets and wooden boards pressed against each other like pages of a book sewn together. Shafi was allocating the initial inventory for each branch, spreading the main hall’s total stock across three stores, when she realised that each branch needed a minimum guaranteed supply of dried chamomile, dried yarrow, dried arborvitae leaf, and dried dates — the staples of the healing hall. She opened the main store and ran her hand along the chamomile shelves, her fingers brushing the bundles. First shelf: still passable, the bundles full. Second shelf: thin, the gaps showing. Third shelf — the most frequently used, the one the physicians reached for first — was already down to the boards, the wood showing through.

After the spread, the main hall’s stock was divided so thinly that each branch had barely enough to cover a week. But that was only the first calculation — because before the first branch could receive its initial allotment, these shelves still had to sustain the main hall for a gap of seven or eight days between draw‑down and restock, the supply chain slow and uncertain. Every day, patients still came; every day, the main hall’s herbs diminished, the piles shrinking. She finished the calculation, laid the leather sheet across her knees, and sat by the south wall of the pharmacy, in front of the ventilation slot that had not yet been fitted with a frame, the open gap letting in the afternoon light. Sweat beaded on her brow, her hair sticking to her forehead, but her fingers trembled slightly — not from heat, but from the thinness of the numbers, the margin so narrow. She began adding notes in small, precise characters: ”Southern branch minimum: dried chamomile no less than two bundles; northern branch no less than three; riverbank branch no less than two. Main hall alert threshold: below ten bundles — initiate restocking immediately.”

Someone muttered that the branch pharmacies would be built for nothing, since the herbs would not last six days, the shelves empty before the walls were even finished.

Nefer, passing by the pharmacy door, overheard this. She said nothing at first — just paused, her hand on the doorframe, and listened. But after the northern branch broke ground, she proposed another approach: if the northern branch’s treatment room and small rear store were used to process used bandages — washed in hot water, re‑picked, re‑woven — the old linen, after steaming and sun‑drying, could cover at least a third of the consumption. In the main hall, these bandages had been thrown into waste baskets and carted away, the scraps piling up. But now, with three branches opening, every piece of clean cloth had to be counted, every scrap saved. Branches had more children, and children needed more frequent changes — a small wound needed fresh linen twice a day. ”One child needs two changes; two branches see ten children a day — that’s twenty changes, sixty changes in six days. The main hall’s waste baskets won’t just supply their own needs; they need to set aside at least an extra two‑tenths for the northern branch. We used to throw the scraps into the river, let them wash away — we can’t do that anymore. Waste is material, and material is medicine.”

A young temporary worker who sifted sand heard this — his fingers were blistered from the sieve, the calluses still soft and pink, the skin peeling. He hesitated, his weight shifting from foot to foot, then asked, his voice uncertain: ”After I finish sifting, can I take the used bandages home for my wife to reweave? She used to work in a Memphis weaving shop — four years, she knows how to spin and mend nets. She can’t sit idle; she’d be happy to do something useful, something that matters. I’ll bring her a bit of leftover food from the kitchen — that’s all I can give to the hall.”

Nefer looked at him for a long moment, her eyes steady. ”Tell her to come tomorrow morning. Bring her own shuttle — it has to be sturdy; the scrap linen here is coarse, the threads thick and rough, and a light shuttle will snap on the first pass. I’ll set aside a portion of food for her from the kitchen scraps, enough for a meal.” She said this, then picked up a piece of waste bandage from the corner beside the stove, the cloth frayed and stained, traced its warp direction with her finger — the threads running straight — and tied a small knot at the torn edge, marking the orientation. The shuttle had to follow the original weave to keep the threads from breaking; a wrong pass would ruin the whole piece. She laid the cloth beside a broken water jar, ready for the woman to collect the next day.

In the evening, Shafi recalculated every branch’s minimum stock against the main hall’s current inventory, her charcoal moving across the leather.

On the wooden tally board beside the pharmacy door — already crowded with columns of figures: entry dates, stock levels, daily consumption, days available, alert triggers — she wrote the revised numbers, squeezing them into the remaining space. Her characters were small, each occupying the same width, not a single line crooked, every stroke even. At the bottom she added: ”Projected initial branch allocation — main hall stock will sustain until day fifteen.” When she wrote the character for ”day,” her charcoal tip had worn down to almost a flat plane, the point gone — she was pressing with the side of the stick, the last strokes barely visible, the black fading. She set the stick down, reviewed the figures one more time, her eyes tracing each number, ensuring no ambiguity remained, then nailed the board back onto its wall hook and slid the wooden pin home, the sound sharp in the quiet.

The moment the pin clicked into place, the last shovelful of muddy gravel was lifted from the southern branch’s foundation pit, the wet earth dropped into a waiting basket. Someone looked into the old well — it had dried up, the water gone, no more muddy yellow water seeping out, the bottom crusted with dry clay. Lu Zhu, at the northern fork near the weaving workshop, re‑checked the water‑channel branch elevation, his eyes moving between the plan and the ground, then ordered the kiln workers to seal the kiln overnight to slow the temperature drop by dawn, the bricks still warm. Meru, beside the riverbank branch’s foundation pit at the ferry, used charcoal to sketch a transport schedule on a boat plank — a Nubian stone‑supply water route he had already run twice, knowing which shoals were deep and where oarsmen tended to drift at night; he planned every loading and unloading slot accordingly, marking the tides.

Shafi heard a voice outside the door — an old woman from the southern slum, who had ridden a neighbour’s ox‑cart to the main hall, her bones aching from the jolting ride. She stood on the gravel road outside, clutching a small cloth bundle, its ties worn and frayed, the fabric thin from use. Inside were several bunches of dried plantain, washed clean — some stems were broken, but at the breaks you could see the sand had been rubbed off, not a single grain left on the leaves, the washing thorough. ”I don’t know how to prepare medicine,” she said, her voice thin and old, ”but I know this grass stops diarrhoea — my own children drank it when they were small, and it saved them. Before the branch is built, let these be used for those who need them.”

Shafi took the bundle, laid the plantain stalks one by one on the pharmacy shelf, her hands gentle, and for each one she wrote in the receipt entry: ”Donated by local — no number.” She wrote those characters evenly, without a hint of haste, the strokes calm and steady. The young medicine boys standing beside her all turned to look at the north wall — the wall now thick with twigs, wooden tags, leather sheets, and old cloth, a patchwork of knowledge. It was no longer just a wall. It was the body of a system in motion, every figure on every leather sheet connecting to a specific branch, a specific shelf, a specific wooden bolt — a living network of care.
