Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 55: Chapter 4: Rumors Everywhere The People Resist the Healing Hall

The rumors found their fuel on the day the healing hall’s interior walls passed the second course.

By then, they had already been smoldering for three days at the encampment’s edges. On the first day, someone said — just said, in passing, to no one — that the healing hall’s walls were facing the wrong direction, toward the land of the dead. No one knew who started it. The words might as well have grown out of a wall themselves. On the second day, someone else said that the former High Priest’s medicines had been smuggled in from Thebes — tainted — and that anyone who swallowed them would dream of their own grave. By then, the first day’s rumor had aged into something harder: no longer a question, but a certainty, polished smooth by a full night of being turned over in the dark. On the third day, the rumors stopped drifting at the encampment’s edges. They found their center, their ignition point — the ferry-crossing laundry-washing station — and then they spread along the riverbank, north and south at the same time, like a fire catching at both ends.

It was a coordinated campaign, and it had been designed to appear spontaneous. From the riverbank, three distinct rumor lines were seeded at the same moment. At the ferry-crossing laundry-washing station, one line: ”That formal healing hall is nothing but a lair for evil spirits — you’ll be cursed just walking past it.” At the northern adobe-brick drying yard, another: ”Those herbs are all moldy, rotten — they make you sicker, not better.” At the market stall where the food vendors set up their clay cooking pots, a third: ”That former High Priest — he was exiled for cursing the water. And now he’s back, handing out medicine. Think about it. Think hard.”

These were not villagers muttering at dusk. These were operatives dispatched by the Theban Priesthood of Nekhem. They came in three teams, each team wearing the same coarse-linen kilt, each team seeded into a different crowd. The first team worked the ferry crossing and the laundry-washing station — targeting the women. The moment a woman paused in her washing, one of them would appear beside her, crouching at the riverbank, and deliver a single line, calm as weather-talk: ”The stone tablet says it — the one everyone’s been reading. The river water is foul. The outsider must be expelled.” The second team worked the quarry intake and the brick-kiln yard — targeting the laborers. They waited until a shift ended, until the men were bent over their evening meal, too tired to think, and then they sat down among them and said, in a voice pitched just loud enough for the whole circle to hear: ”That healing hall — you know why they say the patients are getting better? It’s not the medicine. It’s because they’re feeding the sick people’s souls to the dead.” The third team was the quietest. They worked the market stalls — not the vendors, but the customers, the people standing in line. No accusations. No named targets. Just a sigh, and then: ”They told me not to say anything.” A pause. The customer leans in. ”About what?” And then: ”About the healing hall. They said...” And the sigh. And the sentence left unfinished. Because what the sigh implied was worse than anything the words could deliver, and the silence after it — the silence that followed the unfinished sentence — was the part that settled into the listener’s bones, that would keep them awake through the night, that they would carry to their neighbors in the morning and repeat, half-remembered, with the same sigh left in the same place.

This was the method. Each line seeded, each seed watered, each ear filled. Their voices were soft. They did not shout. They did not accuse. They used the intimate tone of a neighbor sharing a worry, of a grandmother warning a child, of a friend lowering their voice to say what everyone else was too afraid to say. And that tone — the lowered voice, the sigh, the hand placed on the listener’s arm — was more devastating than any shouted accusation. A shouted accusation could be met with a shout. But a whispered worry — that settled into the walls. It clung to the mortar, to the reed mats, to the dark space behind the oil lamps where the light could not reach. You could not shout it away. You could only lie awake listening to it, and in the morning, when you opened your door, the whisper had become something you believed you had thought yourself.

The morning after the first whispers, a stone flew into the healing hall’s courtyard.

The previous night, someone — more than one someone — had been seen near the construction site after dark. A laborer working the night watch said shadows moved along the wall, shadows that did not belong to the construction crew. The moon had just risen, casting a cold white light across the bare ground, and in that light the shadows paced. They circled the healing hall’s perimeter — one slow circuit, then another, then a third — and then they stopped. Something was pressed into the ground. Something was scratched into the wall. And then the shadows dissolved into the dark beyond the light’s reach. The night watchman did not investigate. He stayed where he was, his lamp shielded behind his body, and listened for a second set of footsteps. The second set never came. But he knew — the way a man who has stood enough night watches knows — that those shadows had not left. They had only retreated beyond the wall line, into the dark where the next day’s troubles were already being laid out.

And then morning came.

A fist-sized chunk of riverbank limestone — the same grade used in the foundation’s gravel moisture-barrier — smashed into the wall bricks above the intake door. The bricks were still green; the mortar had not fully cured. The stone’s impact cratered the face, a finger-depth pit punched into the soft clay, surrounded by a spray of fine cracks radiating outward like a web. The stone itself bounced off and lay in the courtyard sand, still warm from the hand that had thrown it. The man who threw it had a strong arm. He had stood inside the wall’s shadow, waited for the laborers to turn their backs — the brief gap between the end of the night shift and the start of the day shift — and then he had thrown, and then he had run. By the time the first apprentice ran out from the timber shelter and saw the damage, the thrower was gone. The stone in the sand. The crater in the wall. A single, smooth throwing arc, as flat and clean as it had been practiced.

The bricklayer’s apprentice who was first to reach the impact site — a boy no older than fifteen — stood there unable to move. The stone had hit close enough to him that the dust from the impact still hung in the air, a pale haze of pulverized brick drifting in the morning light. He had been crouched behind that very wall section only moments before, mixing a fresh batch of mortar. A single pace closer and the stone would have struck his temple. He stood there, staring at the crater, and then something warm trickled down his forehead. He reached up. Blood. A fragment of brick shard — no bigger than a fingernail — had caught him above the eyebrow. He pressed his palm against it, and the blood, hot and thin, ran between his fingers and dripped onto the uncured mortar at his feet, blooming into the gray lime like a thin red flower that did not belong in this season or this soil. He did not cry out. He just stood there, a boy holding his own blood, staring at the wall — the wall his own hands had been building — and then he asked, his voice flat with shock, ”They’re... they’re throwing stones now.”

And then the scream. Someone — a woman, her voice raw — shouted from the direction of the construction-road gate. ”Tear down that healing hall! It’ll curse you — all of you — it’ll curse your souls!” The voice was pitched to carry, the kind of voice that had shouted across a washing-station yard a thousand times, that could cut through the sound of water splashing on stone. But today, in the quiet of the morning construction site, it sounded different — thin and brittle at the edges, the sound of a voice being used for something it had never been meant to do.

The old plasterer came running from the wall line. He did not hesitate. He pushed through the gathering crowd and reached the apprentice’s side, his hand going straight to the wound — pressing his thumb just above the eyebrow to stem the bleeding. He shouted over his shoulder, ”Clean cloth — now!” An apprentice tore a strip from the rag pile and passed it forward. The old plasterer pressed the cloth to the wound, holding it firm, and then — only then — did he raise his head and look at the wall. The mortar was still soft. The brick face was cratered. The stone itself — that riverbank limestone — was still sitting in the sand, one face of it worn smooth by water, the other face sharp and raw where it had shattered against the wall. He reached down, picked up the stone, and turned it over in his hand. The water-worn face was cool. The fractured face was still warm. He set the stone on the wall beside him — beside his trowel — and then, without a word, pulled a fresh load of mortar and began packing it into the crater. His trowel moved across the damaged brick with the same unhurried rhythm he used on every wall. He did not throw the stone back. He did not shout. He simply repaired the wall.

Kamon came running from the eastern work zone. He did not push through the crowd — the crowd parted for him. When he ran, the sand-lime dust from his hammer handle streamed behind him in a pale yellow line, caught by the morning breeze, hanging in the air behind his path. He reached the wall, stopped, and took in the damage — the cratered brick, the blood on the apprentice’s forehead, the stone still lying on the sand. Then he turned toward the crowd beyond the wall.

Outside the wall stood a dozen people. Most of them had been drawn by the rumor — not participants, not throwers, but witnesses. They held stones in their hands, some of them. Others held nothing. But standing at the center — toward the back of the crowd — was a man who had not thrown a stone, who held no weapon, who had simply come to watch. His hands, at his sides, were empty. But his thumb — his thumb was rubbing a small, smooth patch on the stone he had not thrown, the stone still clutched in his palm, his grip loose and ready. He was waiting. Waiting to see what happened after the first stone landed. He did not know he was waiting. But his thumb — rubbing that patch — knew.

Kamon stood before the wall and did not move toward the crowd. His thumb found the worn groove on the hammer handle and rubbed along its length — the full span, from the first hollow to the last — once, twice, three times. Twenty years of gripping that hammer had taught him exactly what each hollow meant. He knew what he was supposed to do next. He did not know what the right thing to do next was. The apprentice was still bleeding behind him. The wall was still cratered. The crowd was still watching. And Kamon — Kamon stood before them, his thumb rubbing that groove, and said, quietly, to the apprentice who was still trembling: ”Don’t go out there.” The hammer handle’s groove. His thumb traversed it, end to end, then back again. ”Wait,” he said. ”The wound first.” The man who had been shouting — the one who had been pacing at the wall edge — fell silent. And Kamon, standing there, pulled the timber formwork stake from the ground — the stake that marked the construction gate’s boundary — and slid it into the leather loop at his belt. He walked to the stake and stood beside it, facing the crowd. He did not step forward. He did not step back. He stood exactly at the boundary — the invisible line where the construction road met the open ground, the line where what was being built met what was trying to stop it. The crowd did not advance. But neither did they retreat. The two sides stood there, watching each other, and the wind from the river valley blew between them, rustling the reed mats stacked on the construction pallet, a low, dry, continuous sound.

”The night watch — double the shift,” Kamon said, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. ”The man who was on duty last night — he takes the first half. I’ll take the second.” The laborers around him looked up — their foreman, volunteering for a night watch. A night watch was the worst shift, the coldest, the loneliest. No one asked for it. And here was Kamon — a man who had spent thirty years climbing out of that rank — asking for it.

That night, Kamon took the night watch himself. He stood at the wall line through the dark hours, his knees aching — the old pain from years of crouching at foundation trenches — and he made no sound. He stood on the adobe-brick drying yard’s high ground, and when the shift changed, he straightened one leg — just one, slowly — and then stood looking out beyond the wall. Beyond the wall, a handful of people still stood there. They stood in the shadows where the moonlight could not reach, holding no stones, holding no shouts. They had been standing there a long time. He did not know how long. They did not know how long they would stay. One of them moved — shifted weight from one foot to the other — and then was still again. They had come to watch, and then they had stayed because leaving felt like surrender. Kamon understood. He stood his watch, and they stood theirs, and the moon tracked across the sky, and the night wind blew from the river valley, tugging at the unsecured reed mats until they rustled — a dry, whispering sound — all through the night.

On the third day of the rumors, a crowd of the fearful and the uncertain massed before the healing hall’s gate. They were not a mob. A mob has a single throat, a single roar. This was something more dangerous — this was neighbors, standing in loose clusters, some holding stones, some holding nothing but doubt. They had arranged themselves in layers. The front layer: the ones with stones. The middle layer: the ones still deciding. The back layer: the ones who had come only to see what would happen, the ones whose hands were empty but whose eyes were recording everything. And cutting through the center, walking straight up to the gate, was a man who carried no stone at all — an old man, his face lined like cracked clay, who had not come for the rumor. He had come because his grandson had died in the medical stall three days ago, and he had not yet found anyone to blame. Grief, searching for a target. He did not know the rumors. He did not care about the rumors. He only knew that his grandson had been carried into a building with no roof, and had come out with no breath. And now someone was building a bigger building — a permanent one — and he did not know what that meant, but he knew he could not let it stand without being seen. His presence did not need words. It was its own argument.

The apprentice at the gate did not speak. His father had been working the quarry intake, shaping stone, and his father’s hands had shaped him too — had taught him that when a man walked at you with that expression, you did not argue. You stood. And so the apprentice stood. He stood the way Imset had taught him to stand, after the first stone had hit the wall and the boy’s forehead was still bleeding: feet planted, back straight, neither advancing nor retreating. He had been running a fever through the night, and the fever had not broken, but he had not told anyone. He just stood. The crowd noticed, after a moment, that he stood as steady as a city wall.

And then Nefer appeared.

She came marching up from the riverbank women’s work station, her skirt still smeared with lime-white slurry from the brick yard, barefoot, shoving through the crowd without slowing. She had not been summoned. She had heard the noise from across the camp and come straight from the women’s workshop, where she and the other women had been sewing liners for the pharmacy’s herb cabinets. When she heard that a stone had hit the wall, she set down her needle and thread, stood up, and walked out with nothing on her feet. Her hands were covered in mud, her feet in sand, her hair blown loose on one side — but when she pushed through the crowd, no one stopped her. Not because she was fast. Because the way she moved — that stride, that directness — implied a path that had already been cleared. And so it cleared.

In her hands she carried a wooden notice-board — the board she had sawn herself that morning — and on it, painted in lime-wash, three lines:

Consultation hours — dawn to dusk.

Mild cases — please wait. Severe cases — immediate.

Medicine shortage — Severe cases prioritized.

The board was her own work. The wood still carried rough splinters; when she lifted it, the lower edge dripped a thread of fresh lime-wash onto the ground — the same lime-wash that had just been mixed on site, the same lime that had been slaked for the wall mortar. She propped the board against the palm-timber post by the gate, then drove a peg into the ground beside it, the peg sinking with three hard blows — one, two, three — each blow striking with the same weight. And when the third blow landed, the board was fixed. She stepped back, half a pace, and checked the gap between the board and the post — equal spacing, true to vertical. Nefer did not trust her eyes to get it right. Her eyes measured it, and the measuring was the same tool she had used to lay out the foundation for the women’s workshop.

When she straightened and turned around, the crowd had already changed. The outer ring — the ones who had been standing farthest back — they had moved closer. Not to attack. To read. The stone-throwers from the quarry, the brick-loaders from the kiln yard, the sand-sifting women from the riverbank, the water-hauling boy. Not one of them had been drawn to the gate because they believed the rumors. They had come because they knew — each of them — what it was to drink water from the camp’s shallow well. They had all drunk that water. And they were all still alive. The rumor said the healing hall was cursed. But the water — the water they had all drunk — was real. And the healing hall was the only place in Akhetaten that had told them to stop drinking it.

No one in the crowd spoke. Not because Nefer had said anything profound. Because the board she had hung — that simple notice, painted with the same lime-wash that was plastering the hall’s walls — told them something the rumors could not: the healing hall had rules. Rules that anyone could read. Rules that anyone could verify. The rumor said the hall’s medicine was poison. But the board said the hall was running out of medicine, and the hall was not hiding it. The hall was telling them — openly — that it did not have enough. A place that was hiding something did not publicly admit its own shortages.

This was not over. The crowd around the gate was still milling. Someone in the middle of the crowd — the man who had been holding the stone earlier — repeated the accusation, the one the rumor had been seeding for days: ”The formal healing hall’s medicine — it’s all moldy, rotten. It makes you sicker.”

A man with a freshly set broken arm — the quarry stonemason who had had his arm set by Imset’s bone-setting herb just the month before — stopped walking when he heard this. He lifted his arm from the sling — the arm that had been broken, that had been set, that now moved — and then he moved it again. He flexed his fingers. The crowd watched. He flexed them again. The crowd kept watching. He raised his voice — the same voice he used to call out stone dimensions across the quarry floor — and it carried. ”When the evil spirit set my bone — it was my own bone. This arm — it’s my arm. If the evil spirit set it, would it still bend like this?” He flexed once more — each joint moving in sequence, each knuckle bending to full range, and then his hand closed into a fist. It was not a threat. It was a demonstration. His arm, set by the man the rumor called a sorcerer, worked.

The crowd went quieter than quiet. The quarry stonemason stood with his arm still raised, holding it in the air, and the rumor-monger who had been standing in the center of the crowd — the one whose face had been hidden by the press of bodies — tried to speak. His mouth opened and closed. Nothing came. The crowd shifted, and in the shifting, a gap opened around him, and in the gap, he was suddenly visible — a single man, no crowd to hide in, his mouth still working on words that would not come. The stonemason’s arm was still raised. Someone in the back — a sand-sifter — coughed. Someone else — a quarry laborer — shifted his weight, and the movement, in the silence, sounded like a verdict.

And then the arm came down. The stonemason looked at the empty space where the rumor-monger had been standing — the man had slipped away, through a gap in the crowd — and then the stonemason turned and walked back to the stone pile. His stone hammer was still lying on the bedding sand. He picked it up. The quarry gang, the sand-sifters, the kiln loaders, the old boat captain who had been watching from the ferry crossing — every one of them turned back to their work. The stone on the bedding sand. The sieve in the riverbank shallows. The brick in the drying yard. The hammer on the chisel. And the man with the broken arm — the man whose arm had been set by the so-called sorcerer — lifted his hammer and brought it down, and the sound of it, striking stone, was the first sound in a long time that did not carry fear.

A moment later, an old woman pushed through the crowd, dragging a little girl.

She was hard, that old woman — hard of bone, hard of voice. She had spent every night since the sickness began telling her granddaughter: ”He will take it. He will.” And the granddaughter — the girl, no older than eight — had fallen sick anyway. The old woman pushed through the crowd with nothing but her own body and her own certainty, and when she reached the gate, she had already been up all night. Her fingers, inside her pocket, were clenched around a small flat amulet — a worn, smooth stone that she had been clutching since before the girl was born, that she had carried through childbirth and flood and famine and war, that she had rubbed so many times the carving on its face had worn away to a faint, nameless sheen. But the amulet was no longer in her pocket. When the crowd had surged, someone had jostled her elbow, and the amulet had slipped from her grip — slipped through a gap in the reed mats, into the sand, gone. She did not notice it was gone. Her fingers were still curled in the shape of it. When they closed on empty air, her hand froze — the hand that had held the amulet every night for fifty years — and then her fingers, after a moment, slowly uncurled and rested on her knee. She said nothing to the girl. She did not turn around to search for the amulet. She just stood there, her hand empty, her fingers still shaped around something that was no longer there. She had come to save her granddaughter. She had not come to save a stone.

Imset, looking at her, asked not ”What is it” but ”How long.”

The old woman startled. She stood there a moment, trying to remember. Then she said, ”Three days.”

”Can she still drink water?”

”She can’t swallow. Not a single sip.”

Imset nodded. He did not ask what the amulet had been. He did not tell her to let go of it. He simply wrote on a wooden tally-slip as he spoke: ”Take this home. Boil it in three bowls of water, simmer to one. When it is one bowl, let it cool. Give her one small sip — one sip, no more — and wait. If she keeps it down, wait one full watch, then give her another sip. If she vomits — bring her directly to the healing hall. The back gate — the discharge gate — come in through there. Do not come through the front.” He handed her the slip and stood. And then, without being asked, he added: ”If the neighbor’s child is also sick — bring them together. The healing hall’s back gate, the discharge gate. Come in through there.”

The old woman took the slip. Her granddaughter stood beside her, watching, and the girl asked, in a small voice: ”Is he... going to...”

Imset did not raise his head. The hand that had written the slip was already reaching for the next.

The old woman pulled at her own collar. The girl, who had been silent all the way here, looked up and did not repeat the question. She had been holding something in her hand — a tightly wound little twist of reed fiber, the kind that washerwomen used to tie their laundry bundles, the kind that her grandmother had picked up on the riverbank road half a lifetime ago, walking home with wet clothes on her head. Its leaves were hard, its stem smooth and dark from being handled, and the girl held it out — not to Imset, but toward the medicine shelf, placing it on the wooden counter beside the herb bundles. ”This is... for you. Take it.” She had seen her grandmother do this a hundred times — leave an offering on the temple altar — and she did not know that a healing hall was not a temple. She only knew that she had seen her grandmother place offerings, and that when her grandmother placed an offering, the god’s face in the temple seemed, for a moment, less distant.

Imset took the reed-fiber twist and set it on the counter — on the same wooden board that still bore the gouge-mark from the last stone that had been thrown through the door, the same board where the riverbank limestone offered by a washerwoman and the water-polished stone offered by a stonemason now sat side by side — different origins, different ways of arriving, the same altar.

The second stone came at the door.

This time the thrower did not hide. The stone hit the door, and the sound of it — the sound of stone meeting wood — echoed through the pharmacy. Imset was standing no more than three paces from the door. He did not duck. The stone struck the door frame’s upper beam and ricocheted into the pharmacy, clipping the edge of the medicine rack. The rack shuddered — one of the ceramic jars near the top tipped, wobbled at the shelf’s edge, and nearly fell. The apprentices in the room all stood. Their hands — gripping trowel handles, clutching herb bundles — tightened. They turned toward Imset. They had not seen the first stone hit. This time they saw it. The stone was lying on the floor, still skidding across the packed-earth surface. And the door behind it — the door they had hung themselves — was cracked. Not broken. But cracked. And the crack — a thin, splintered fracture running from the upper hinge toward the center — was the first wound the healing hall’s own door had ever taken.

Imset did not shout. He did not duck. He bent down, picked up the stone from the floor — the same riverbank limestone, water-worn on one face, sharp on the other — and turned it over in his hand. The stone was still warm. From the hand that had thrown it. He set it on the wooden counter beside the door — beside the reed-fiber twist the little girl had offered, on the same board. Two offerings now. One offered in hate. One offered in hope. Lying side by side on the same wood. Then he lowered his head and continued writing the prescription slip he had been writing before the stone interrupted him. The charcoal in his hand — his hand never stopped.

Shafi, in the pharmacy, heard the stone hit. She did not run out. She was still at the medicine counter, still filling out the inventory sheet, and her pen — her pen did not stop either. She wrote: ”Dried pomegranate rind — less than one-third bundle remaining. Dried chamomile — exhausted.” And then she wrote the eight characters that had been hanging over the pharmacy since the first shipment had come in mold-ruined. ”Medicine shortage — severe cases only. Severe shortage — severe shortage cases only, reduced formula.” Those eight characters had been there for days. And now she added a ninth. ”Stone thrown — first incident.” On the tally-board above the counter, she pressed the charcoal down and added one more stroke. And the charcoal in her hand — a short stub now, ground down smaller than a finger-joint — was the same charcoal she had been writing with since the first day. No stone that hit the door could change what it wrote.

Construction did not stop. Kamon and the stone supply team were still grading stone at the north end of the site, laying out the approach road. ”Severe cases — left. Mild cases — right.” Imset’s triage principle had already been seeded into the layout before the building was finished, and now the stonemasons were embedding it in stone. On the approach road to the intake gate, Kamon’s team was already laying the queue-channel posts — palm-timber stakes driven into the ground, marking the waiting line for patients who would one day stand there. The stakes were driven at arm’s-length intervals — not a random spacing, but a spacing that allowed a man on a stretcher to be carried down the line without his bearers’ elbows colliding. While the crew was still driving stakes, Kamon had another team digging a drainage channel beside the approach road — a separate channel, entirely independent of the pharmacy’s wastewater main, so that rainwater from the queue area would not mix with the medical discharge. No one had asked for this. No one had specified it in the drawings. Kamon had seen the approach road being laid, had looked at the slope, and had simply added the channel — because thirty years of building grain-reserve roads had taught him: a queue line that floods in the rain becomes a contamination vector.

Kamon stood at the site’s edge and watched the drainage channel being dug. His short ruler tapped once against each palm-timber post, confirming the interval. After the last post was struck, he turned and wrote a single official requisition slip, signing off on the approach-road land-use extension. His pen paused — a fraction of a breath — and then he wrote one more line in the remarks column: ”Approach road queue-channel width — accommodate stretcher-bearer passage.” After writing this, he checked it once, folded the slip, and tucked it into his leather case. As he left the site, he paused — one breath — and stood there, running through the requisition items he had just signed, confirming he had not missed anything. He had not.

That same afternoon, a Theban river-trader boat captain — a man who had been running the Thebes-Akhetaten cargo route for years — docked at the ferry crossing. He did not carry medicine. He carried information, which, in this camp, was almost as scarce. The captain had been waiting at the Theban docks when the priesthood’s embargo had been announced. He had seen the market freeze. He had seen the merchants pull their cargo, the dock fees double, the price of dried pomegranate rind climb so high it had become a joke — then a threat, then a weapon. And what he brought now was worse: the embargo was tightening. Nekhem’s people had begun to lean on the Nubian supply route — the overland route that Meru’s people controlled, the only alternative to the river. The captain did not want to be the bearer of this news. He stood at the ferry crossing with a pale face — not from fear, not from the long river journey, but from the knowledge that he was about to deliver a message that would hurt people he had come to respect. He looked around the ferry crossing, at the camp he had been supplying since the first foundation stake was driven, and then he shook his head. Then he went to find the old boat captain — the one permanently moored at the crossing — and told him everything.

The old captain absorbed the news without flinching. He told Shafi. Then he waited for her to panic. She did not. She simply tucked the news into the inner layer of her medicine chest, nodded once, and asked: ”Noon tomorrow — do we start counting from noon tomorrow?”

”Afternoon,” the old captain said. ”The first dried-chamomile shipment — when it docks, Thebes will have already blocked the next one. And the price — they’ve pushed it higher. I can’t tell you the number. And you can’t pay what you don’t know.” He had been running this river for twenty years. When the priesthood wanted a trade route closed, they closed it. They were not trying to kill the healing hall. They were trying to starve it — one shipment at a time. Every merchant still sitting at the Theban docks with his cargo untouched was one more wound.

Shafi stood and did not let the words settle. She slid the cabin door open a crack. The ferry-crossing wind blew through, and the lamp flame guttered — then steadied. She stood in the wind a moment and then spoke. ”I still haven’t told my master. The first shipment — mold. The pharmacy — nearly empty. There may not be a second one. And the third — I don’t think there will be a third.”

She left the cabin and followed the riverbank back toward the healing hall. Along the way, she catalogued every wild plant she passed, every leaf with medicinal potential: the ones whose dried leaves could substitute for pomegranate rind, the ones whose bark could slow diarrhea, the ones whose roots held the faintest echo of chamomile’s cooling effect. Every leaf — she named it. Every name — she attached to a slot in the pharmacy. By the time she reached the healing-hall site, it was fully dark, and she did not pause at the gate but went straight to the pharmacy. She pulled out her leather tally-sheet and, in the section still blank, added one more line: ”Wild-gathered substitute — to be verified. Sweet wormwood, one bundle. Riverbank source, unconfirmed.” She wrote the character for ”unconfirmed,” then tucked the sheet into the medicine chest’s bottom layer, beneath the cabinet and the wall. The moonlight fell across her hands as she pressed the sheet flat on her knees.

The news reached Lu Zhu at the encampment command shelter as he was reviewing Mery’s water-pipe layout. He had not stopped working — even after the messenger’s words, even after the confirmation that the supply line was being throttled from Thebes. He stood beside the unfinished pipe trench, charcoal in hand, drawing on the wooden plan. ”Kamon — the pharmacy’s wastewater main. Where you connect it, add one line of annotation to the joint: wastewater flows to the settling basin, far side of the chemical pit. Keep the medicine cabinets well clear.” He drew a double line beneath the annotation. The double line, in his diagram code, meant: this item is not to be altered. And below the double line, he added one more line, in smaller characters: ”The medicine supply is cut — but the pharmacy layout can still function independently. The water system, unaffected.”

Mery crouched beside him and had not spoken. When Lu Zhu’s hand paused over the annotation — his finger on the pipe-length’s measurement mark — Mery saw it. A hesitation. But not of doubt. It was the hesitation of someone who had just measured one section of pipe, found the number, and stopped. Stopped for three full breaths. Then kept going — not pushing through, not resisting, but accepting. He stood, walked to the exterior wall of the ward building, and traced the pipe route from the settling basin all the way to the sand-bed filter’s outflow. His hand moved across the tamped-stone bedding, and his shadow — a single dark bar in the moonlight — tracked the pipe’s path. He walked it for a long time, and when he finished, he saw: the shadow was not tracing a pipe. It was tracing the line of a decision — a decision made in advance, before the crisis, when Lu Zhu had drawn the double line on the plan. The man who drew that line had known. He had known the supply could be cut. And he had drawn the pipe to work anyway.

Then Mery crouched back beside Lu Zhu and spoke from the pipe-trench’s edge: ”The pharmacy is three spans short.” He paused, tilted his head toward the pharmacy’s orientation — the angle that allowed the pharmacy to open fully to the ventilation slots, the angle whose air-exchange rate would outlast any interruption in the water supply. ”The angled wind circuit.”

He did not say why. He did not say how to solve it. He simply stood at the trench’s edge, pulled a reed bundle from the supply stack, and wrapped it around the pipe joint at the pharmacy wall — one wrap, then another, then another, each layer packed tight, compressing into the reed fiber. When the final layer was sealed, he leaned close and blew against the joint. No air-leak sound. No seepage. Then he stood and brushed the reed-fiber dust from his palms into the moonlight.

Lu Zhu did not answer. His charcoal paused at the final notation on the water-pipe annotation and held there — three breaths. It was not that he did not know how to join the pipe. It was that the solution — the one Mery had just demonstrated — had solved the problem before it was spoken. He looked at the joint and said, quiet: ”You go ahead and join the pipe. However you need to join it — join it. In time, the pharmacy’s layout will be a finished thing. The pipe won’t be.”

He stood and brushed the dust from his hands. The night wind, blowing across the river valley, spilled over the walls. The ward building’s walls, under the moonlight, carried a faint, living warmth — the warmth of stone that had soaked up the day’s sun. The stone facing, where the foundation course met the wall base, glowed a pale, luminous white. And that single band of white — the color of moonlight on dressed stone — ran the full length of the pharmacy floor. The medicine cabinets were empty. But below them, the pipe joints were sealed.

When night deepened, Mery ran his hand across the reed-wrapped pipe joint one more time, confirming the seal. After confirming, he crouched there in silence, and in the moonlight, measured the joint’s dimensions one final time, then wrote one line in his notebook: ”Reed-wrap pipe-joint seal — temporary. Before the pharmacy roof is closed, fit a permanent ventilation-shaft access panel. The pipe joint’s dimensions — not one finger-width short of the plan.” He wrote this, then closed the book. And the handwriting on that page, in the moonlight, was the same steady, measured hand he had been writing with since the first day — the hand of someone who had seen the water stop but who believed the water would come again.
