Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 66: Chapter 2: The Edict Refused — Horenheb Holds the Line

The document that would decide the fate of the Western Desert was carried to Thebes by a crippled squad leader on a wooden staff. He walked eleven days to deliver it, and in all that time, no one on the road was walking west.

The man who carried the paper was the old squad leader of Fort No. 3 — the same man whose left foot had been given to the autumn raid two years before. He had walked from the Western Desert to Thebes, and the journey had taken him eleven days. Along the way he passed three relay stations, and at every one of them the station keeper had to verify his waist-tablet, and every time the keeper finished, his eyes went down to the left leg one more time: empty below the knee, the trouser leg tied shut, swinging in the wind with every step. He was used to the looks by now. A man who has lost a foot learns to carry his walking as a question, and to answer it without being asked.

The road had taught him other things too. A man who walks eleven days through the desert learns which hour of the day the heat lies heaviest on the stones, and which wells still hold water in the third month of drought, and the exact weight of a water skin that has to last until the next station. He had been offered a mule at the first relay — he waved it off. A staff was lighter, and a staff did not need fodder. At the second relay, the station keeper offered him a cart. He refused that too, politely, the way a man refuses a kindness he knows he cannot repay on a schedule. At the third relay, the keeper simply looked at him and filled his water skin without asking. That was the kindness he accepted.

The document itself had been written on the western line. The night it was written, Horenheb had sat in his field tent until the second half of the night, writing and tearing up, tearing up and writing again. The final version, when it came, was only half a page long. When he set down the five characters ”I stake my official rank,” the tip of his brush paused in mid-air. He knew, with the particular clarity of a man who has just chosen his ground, that once those five characters left his hand, there would be no road back. He finished the line, sealed the sheepskin with wax, and pressed his own copper ring into the hot seal. The ring bore the mark of a falcon with spread wings — the emblem of his family, pressed now into a decision that would outlive the wax.

The tent had been still after that. The lamp had burned on, and Horenheb had sat looking at the sealed document for a long time, the way a man looks at a bridge he has just decided to cross. In the corner stood the rolled maps of the line, where they always stood; he had unrolled them a dozen times that night and rolled them up again without reading them, because he already knew by heart every crack on every wall they showed. What he had just done was different from anything the maps could show. He had put his name — his family’s name, the falcon’s spread wings — between the court and the line. If the line held, the name would be honored. If the line fell, the name would be dragged through the same sand as the walls.

The document was read aloud at the morning court session.

The reader was the palace reader-scribe, and his voice was flat and even, the voice of a man who has read a thousand documents and learned to let the words carry their own weight. He read steadily through the petition — and when he reached the line ”not one craftsman may be transferred, not one block of material may be moved,” the air in the hall tightened, as if something had been pulled taut. The reader-scribe paused, and went on:

”The western line is in peril. I am willing to stake my official rank and defend this line to the death. If there is any failure, I will bind myself and present myself at the pharaoh’s dais, to be dealt with as he sees fit.”

”Rebellion!” An old noble was the first on his feet, his beard trembling. ”To defy the imperial order, to hold troops and treat them as his own — this Horenheb treats the Western Desert as if it were the walled yard of his own house!”

”What he is doing is bargaining with a royal command, using the border as his stake.” The man beside him took up the thread, his voice not loud, but audible to every ear in the hall. ”When the court raised him to command of the western line, it was to hold the territory — not to lock horns with the court itself.”

The hall buzzed with voices, swelling and breaking against the pillars. Asaf stood in the ranks of the civil officials, saying nothing. His fingertips moved slowly in his sleeve, rubbing a clay seal — an old sealing die. The seal was not his. It was the old die that had been used on the western line’s allocation documents for years; he had brought it with him deliberately today.

That scroll and this seal had been his work until late the night before. Lu Zhu’s technical argument had arrived two nights ago by fast horse — three full leather sheets of it. Asaf had set the sheets against the western line’s allocation documents from previous years and checked every figure: the positions of the seven forts, the bearings of the four watch posts, the heights of the walls, the spacing of the towers. When the checking was done, he had trimmed the lamp wick brighter, and signed his name at the bottom of the sheets. The brush had pressed hard into the hide, and not one stroke had been altered after.

There was a reason he had come to the court with a seal instead of a speech. A speech could be answered with another speech; a seal could only be recognized. The western line’s allocations had passed through his hands for years — consignment after consignment sealed with this very die, sent west since he took the post. Let the court look at the die, and remember whose signatures and seals had built the western line into what it was. That was the argument he had chosen: not words against words, but records against memories.

”Asaf.” Someone in the hall called his name — a courtier of the old-guard faction, his tone carrying a smile. ”The soldiers and craftsmen of the western line — were they not always allocated by your hand? Tell us, how much of a fortune does this Horenheb really hold, to dare trade words with the pharaoh?”

It was a trap, and everyone in the hall knew it. Everyone knew the western line’s craftsmen had passed through Asaf’s own hands for years. If he said the line was well manned and well equipped, he was undercutting Horenheb. If he said the line was hollow, he was admitting that the court’s own years of allocation had hollowed it out — a blow struck at his own people’s face.

Asaf stepped forward one pace. He did not speak yet. From inside his robe he drew a scroll of sheepskin and unrolled it, there in front of the whole court.

”The western line has seven forts. Soldiers on the rolls: four hundred and twelve.” He read, his voice not loud, but very steady. ”In garrison at present: two hundred and ninety-six. The shortfall is one hundred and sixteen — and half of that shortfall was transferred out in the past three years. Transferred to the new capital.”

The hall went still for a breath.

”Craftsmen: one hundred and forty-seven. Of these, eighty-six can work on a wall. And those eighty-six men are to repair seven forts and four watch posts.” He went on. ”Fort No. 3: wall cracked, from the base to the crenellations. Fort No. 7: wall leaning outward, held up by two raw logs. Fort No. 6: grain cellar flooded, half its stores gone moldy. All of this is written in the western line’s documents from previous years.”

He turned the scroll over, revealing the back: row after row of small characters. They were the casualty lists of the western villages over the past three years — Date-Grove Village, forty-seven names; North-Bank Village, thirty-one; Camel-Bell Village, twelve. The numbers were not large. But behind every number followed a name. Name after name, packed tight, all the way down the hide.

Asaf had copied the list himself, the night before, from the records of the line. He had copied it carefully, the way a man copies a list of things he means to keep — because names, once copied, have a way of standing up in a hall and refusing to be argued with. He had not added a single character of commentary. The names did not need one. Four hundred and twelve soldiers on the rolls. Two hundred and ninety-six in garrison. One hundred and forty-seven craftsmen. Eighty-six who could work. Forty-seven dead. Thirty-one dead. Twelve dead. The numbers were small enough to fit on one page of hide, and large enough that no one in the hall had been able to look away from them.

”Honored lords call Horenheb a rebel against the edict.” Asaf said. ”Then first, honored lords, tell me this: if half of those eighty-six remaining craftsmen are drafted away — how many more names will this list hold next year?”

No one in the hall answered. The courtier who had smiled the loudest found his smile beginning to slip; his mouth worked twice, and no sound came out.

It was at that moment that someone proposed bringing the old squad leader before the court.

The intent behind the proposal was plain to anyone who could read a courtroom: a crippled border soldier, standing before the whole court, under every pair of eyes — let him be flustered, and anything could be drawn out of him. They wanted to hear, from his own mouth, that the western line was not really in such dire straits.

The old squad leader came up the hall with his wooden staff tapping the stone, one slow tap at a time. He walked to the center of the floor, stood, and bowed first in the direction of the throne. His bow was not done correctly — border troops are not schooled in court ceremony — but no one picked at it, because every eye in the hall was on the empty trouser leg.

”You are the squad leader of Fort No. 3?” Someone asked.

”Yes.”

”Your leg — how did you lose it?”

”Autumn, the year before last. Libyans raided the village.” The old squad leader said. ”An arrow. From behind the dunes.”

”That was the year before last. Why bring it up.” The questioner waved a hand. ”I ask you this: does the western line lack men, or does it not?”

The old squad leader did not answer at once. He stood where he was, and slowly raised his head to look at the man who had asked. His eyes were red from years of wind and sand — but his gaze did not waver.

”Honored sir,” he said, ”I walked from Fort No. 3 to Thebes. Eleven days on the road. And in all that time, I did not meet a single man walking west.”

The hall fell silent.

”A place that does not lack men,” the old squad leader said, ”is not a place no one is willing to go to.”

No one asked him a second question.

The silence that followed his answer was different from the silences that had come before. The first silence had been surprise; this one was the silence of men doing arithmetic they did not want to do. Eleven days on the road. Not one man walking west. In a kingdom where news traveled by every road, rumor by every fire, and fear faster than either — a road that carried no one toward the desert was a road whose end no one believed in anymore. The old squad leader stood through the silence without shifting his weight, his staff planted beside him, his empty trouser leg swinging gently in the draft from the great doors.

The old-guard nobles were not finished, of course. Someone opened a new line of attack, his voice not loud, but every word aimed at the throat: ”The temple project in the new capital is a state ceremony chosen by the pharaoh himself. The drafting of craftsmen puts brick on that ceremony’s walls. One word from Horenheb, and the ceremony’s hands are cut off — this is not defiance of an edict. This is contempt for the pharaoh. Contempt for the gods themselves.”

The speaker was an old official of the faction that stood with the Amun priesthood. Since the decree changing the gods, they had submitted on the surface — but they had never once missed a chance to work against the new policy. Now they seized on the word ”temple,” and pushed it against Horenheb like a knife.

”That still does not make it his place, as one border commander, to refuse orders.” Another old noble took up the thread. ”The western line is unsteady? Then replace the commander. Put in a man who obeys — the craftsmen are drafted as ordered, and the border is held as ordered.”

”Replace the commander?” Asaf said. ”Three Libyan tribes have pitched camp beyond the border, and their camp is less than a day’s ride from Fort No. 3. A new commander, riding hard from Thebes to the western line, takes a full tenday. And for that tenday — who holds the line?”

The question hung in the air of the hall the way a dropped hammer hangs in the memory of a workshop: the sound had already happened, and every man present was still listening to it. A new commander would not arrive knowing the line — he would arrive learning it, and learning a line takes longer than riding to it. The old noble’s hand stayed on the tabletop, and for the first time that morning, no one in his faction spoke up to fill the silence.

”Then by your reckoning, we simply let him defy the edict?” The old noble slapped the tabletop. ”What is left of the dignity of the court?”

Asaf did not answer at once. He was silent for a moment, his fingertips tapping lightly against the edge of the scroll in his sleeve. Then he said: ”Your servant has one more document.”

From his robe he drew a second scroll. This one was in Lu Zhu’s hand — the characters even and neat, every line aligned. It set out another possibility for the western works. No new soldiers from the court. No new money or grain. Instead: take the fortifications down off the forts and spread them out to the villages. The garrison fort as the core, the villages as the shell, the watchtowers as the eyes. The walls need not be tall — six feet. The towers need not be large — one every three li. Mud-bricks made on the spot; stone carried from the river flats on the villagers’ own backs. The coin spent would not be the court’s silver. It would be the labor of the western people themselves.

”This is the hand of the Master Builder of the new capital.” Asaf said. ”If the honored lords do not believe it, go to the new capital and look at the official warehouses he has built, the houses, the healing halls. Look at them — and then come back and say whether this memorial deserves to be granted.”

He paused, and added: ”As for the will of the gods — the gods’ temples are built stone by stone. While the stones stand, the gods stand. But when the men are gone — who is left to build?”

The hall had fallen quiet again when a slight stir came from the direction of the throne.

No one could make out the pharaoh’s expression. He sat in the high place where the morning light did not reach, and as always, he said not one word about the matter. But before the court dispersed, the reader-scribe mounted the dais again and read out three sentences:

”The drafting of the western line’s craftsmen and materials is suspended. Horenheb, staking his official rank, will hold the line at his own discretion. The new capital’s technical support is granted as requested.”

Three sentences, each shorter than the last. When the final one landed, the faces of several old-guard nobles looked as though cold water had been thrown in them. They wanted to say more — but the reader-scribe had already closed the document. The morning’s business moved on, and the matter of the western line moved with it — out of the hall, onto the roads, into the sand, into the hands of a crippled squad leader walking home with a message he would not forget.

Asaf stood in the ranks of the civil officials, his eyes lowered, listening to all three sentences to the end. His face showed nothing. Only the hand that held the clay seal — finger by finger, slowly — loosened.

He understood what those three sentences meant. The first two were for Horenheb. The last was for the new policy. The pharaoh had not said it plainly, but the words ”technical support” were as good as an admission that the western line’s account could be settled that way: with walls, not men. It was the first time anyone in this court had publicly conceded that construction could hold a border.

He had watched the reader-scribe’s lips close over the last sentence, and he had seen what the words had done to the hall: the old guard’s faces gone tight, the new men’s shoulders loosening a fraction, and the middle of the hall — the men who always waited to see which way the weight fell — already quietly recalculating. That was how the court moved, in Asaf’s experience. Not by argument. By weight. Today the weight had come down on the side of a crippled squad leader and a half-page letter, and the balance of the court had shifted by a degree that would never quite swing back.

Whether the old guard understood it or not, he did not care. What he cared about was what the western line would receive next: the craftsmen. They would come.

He slipped the clay seal back into his sleeve and stood a moment longer, letting the court empty around him. There were speeches he could have made — about the principle of the thing, about the honor of the line — but he had learned, in years of drafting allocations, that the court remembered arguments the way a river remembers stones: not by their shape, but by whether the water moved around them. The water had moved today. That would have to be enough.

After the court dispersed, Asaf waited for the old squad leader at the foot of the stone steps outside the hall.

The old squad leader stood with his weight on the wooden staff, standing very straight. Asaf walked over and asked if he had any message to carry back. The old squad leader thought for a moment, and said: ”The general says — the court may refuse to give us men. But it must not take more. If they give, the western line remembers. If they take, the western line remembers.”

Asaf nodded. He drew his hand from his sleeve; the clay seal was faintly warm in his grip, warmed by the press of his knuckles.

”Carry a message back to the general for me.” He said. ”From now on, the western line has a voice in the court. Tell him to build his walls at ease.”

The old squad leader left. His wooden staff tapped the stone paving one beat at a time — the sound not loud, but even, unhurried, as regular as a man’s pulse. Asaf stood at the foot of the steps and watched until the staff carried him out through the palace gate. Only then did he turn and go back in.

He knew that today, Horenheb had won this round. But he had read the faces of those nobles clearly. This matter was not finished. The account they kept was longer than the western line’s list of damaged fortifications.

The edict reached the Western Desert seven days later.

Horenheb read it three times in the field tent at Fort No. 3. The first reading, aloud, for the three squad leaders on duty in the tent. The second, to himself. On the third, he closed the sheepskin and sat in the tent for a long time.

No drafting of men. No reinforcement of troops. The sentence he had staked his rank on — the court had accepted it.

The wind had dropped, and the fort lay in the particular stillness that comes after a long strain; the edict’s words had settled into him the way water settles into a stone — slowly, and permanently.

Outside the tent, the soldiers already knew. The news ran faster than the edict itself — someone had heard it in the changed rhythm of the courier’s hooves before the man was even off his horse. That evening, when the men gathered at the foot of the wall to draw water, no one cheered. There was only a long breath let out here and there — one man’s breath hanging white in the wind for a moment, then gone. An old soldier poured half his bowl of water out onto the sand, drank the remaining half slowly, and said: ”This time, a man can sleep easy for a while.”

His words went around the fort wall that evening, and something did ease — not the alertness of the line, which was as high as it had ever been, but the particular tightness in men’s chests that comes from knowing the court is reaching for them. The drafts of the past years had stripped the line once, twice, three times; every man on the wall knew the arithmetic of it. Tonight, for the first time in months, no one stood watch wondering whether the orders behind him and the enemy in front of him were converging. There was only the enemy in front.

Only Horenheb was not at ease.

He knew that from this day on, this line had no road back. The court had refused to draft the men because he had staked his rank on the line. If the line fell, what he lost would not be only his rank — it would be the lives of these seven forts, four watch posts, and seven villages.

The news reached the villages the same day. In Date-Grove Village, the elder was spreading dates on the drying mats at the village mouth when the messenger came: the court would not draft the men; the general would hold the line himself; and the general had staked his very rank on it.

The elder stood beside the date mats for a long time after the messenger left. Then he turned and went back into the village, called everyone to the threshing ground, and said one thing: ”The general has staked his rank. Our wall cannot wait any longer.”

He said it standing in the middle of the threshing ground, and no one asked him what he meant. Every villager there had seen the smoke columns of the past weeks; every villager there had counted the days since the scouts appeared on the ridge. The elder’s words were not news. They were permission.

That very afternoon, Date-Grove Village saw a sight it had never seen before: the old leading the young, the women following the men, carrying wooden shovels and pushing carts, all of them walking to the river flats to carry stone. The children followed behind the grown-ups, one stone hugged against each small chest, walking crooked and stumbling — but not one of them let go.

The elder walked at the head of the line, his date-wood staff in one hand and a coil of rope over his shoulder. He was past the age of carrying stone — his back would not stand it — but he walked with the others as far as the river flats, and he was the one who marked out where the stones should be piled, and who told the children which pieces were too heavy for them and then watched them ignore him. The date mats lay half-spread at the village mouth, abandoned in the middle of the work; no one had gone back to finish them. The dates would wait. The wall could not.

On the same day, Horenheb turned the four characters ”hold the line at his own discretion” into something real.

The repairs that had been halted all along the line began again. The grain cellar of Fort No. 6 moved first — the floor raised half a foot, the walls re-plastered, the damp-proof reed matting laid course upon course. The crack in Fort No. 3 was opened from both ends at once: first the loose brick and sand cleaned out of the seam, then a layer of mortar and a layer of crushed stone, packed alternately, filling the crack from the inside out. Into the mortar went fine sand carried from the river flats — the old desert masons’ trick: mortar tempered with sand dries slowly, but it gains toughness, and the wind cannot crack it.

The soldiers worked alongside the craftsmen. Those who could not mix mud carried stone; those who could not lay brick made mud-bricks. The court sent no money and no grain, so the rations were stretched — each man set aside a handful from his daily grain, and the handfuls were pooled and traded for lime. Horenheb was the first to do it: he cut his own horse’s feed in half, and the beans he saved went to the donkey that pulled the mud-brick mold.

The donkey had been a gift from North-Bank Village the year before — a skinny, stubborn beast that had carried the village’s grain to the fort in the bad season. It chewed the beans with a profound and unhurried satisfaction, and the men who saw it found themselves grinning in a way they had not grinned in days. Small things, on a line like this, were the currency of morale. A bean-fed donkey. A trowel that had been worn to half a blade and was now being used to lay brick instead of being buried in the sand. A crack that had gaped at them for two years, closed now by a hand’s width of new mortar, drying gray in the wind. The line was being repaired from the inside out, and every man on it could feel the difference in the soles of his feet.

That night he wrote two letters.

One to the court, giving thanks. One to the new capital, asking for help.

The old squad leader was still on the road back. Horenheb had calculated it: the tapping of that wooden staff would still need to sound along the official road for four more days.

The second letter was written on good leather, in larger characters than the first — because the man who would receive it could not read, and would need someone to read it aloud to him.

”Craftsman-foreman Kamon:

The court has approved the western line’s self-directed repair of its works. I now need the strength of your guild: craftsmen who can work on walls, who understand foundations, who can live in the desert — how many you have, my side will take. Wages at the guild’s set rates; what the court will not cover, the western line will raise itself. Further: the Libyan camp draws nearer by the day. If this line is finished later than three months from now, everything will be too late.

Please discuss with Master Builder Lu Zhu. When your men arrive, how the works are to be built — that will be your call.”

Horenheb had weighed each line of the letter before writing it, the way he weighed every order that left his tent. To the court he had written what a commander writes — duty, peril, the names of the dead. To Kamon he had written what a man writes to another man whose hands he trusts: the truth about the work, and the truth about the clock. There were no courtesies in it, no flourishes; a border commander’s letters are shorter the more they matter.

Horenheb”

The messenger was that same young soldier as before. This time he carried no dates in his saddlebags. Instead, wrapped in his horse’s pack, was a brick from the western line — not a whole brick; half a brick, knocked off the edge of that crack in Fort No. 3, its broken face showing the core turned soft by years of wind and sand. Horenheb had made him take it. ”The men in the new capital will look at it once,” he said, ”and know what it is this side is waiting for.”

When the messenger reached the new capital, Kamon was at the material yard of the craftsmen’s village, supervising the checking of a fresh batch of dressed stone. The stones were sandstone and limestone from the river-flat quarry, and the checking was the kind of work Kamon liked best — quiet, exact, and without surprises. He ran his eye down the row of blocks the way a man runs his eye down a row of soldiers, looking for the one who stands wrong.

He took the letter and had a literate apprentice read it. When the apprentice read ”how many you have, my side will take,” his voice rose without his meaning it to. When he read ”three months,” his voice came down again. When he finished, the whole yard was silent for a long while.

The messenger took the half brick from his horse’s pack and set it down at Kamon’s feet.

The brick met the ground with a dull sound. Kamon bent, picked it up, and turned it over. The core at the broken face had gone soft — he pressed a finger to it, and crumbs sifted down. He handed the brick to the apprentice beside him; the apprentice took it and passed it to the next man. The half brick went around the yard once, and when it came back to Kamon’s hand, it was visibly thinner than it had been a moment before.

”Do you see it.” Kamon said. ”The men of the western line sleep every night behind walls like this.”

No one in the yard spoke. Several young craftsmen who had been joking moments before had gone grim-faced.

Someone picked up the brick after Kamon set it down, and turned it in his fingers without speaking; the gesture passed from hand to hand the way the brick itself had passed, and no one said what they were all thinking. Every one of these men had built something in this city — had mixed mortar, laid brick, set stone — and every one of them had assumed, the way men assume about their own work, that what they built would stand for the years it was meant to stand. The half brick said otherwise. It said that somewhere out west, the walls were older than the men who slept behind them, and tired in a way that new walls did not understand.

Kamon took the letter back and looked at it himself — he could not read the characters, but he knew the drawing on the back of the sheet, made in charcoal by Horenheb’s own hand: several squares, a string of small circles, lines joining circles to squares. He had built defensive low walls on the West Bank in his time. The meaning of this drawing, he understood at a glance.

”Fetch Lu Zhu.” He said.

When Lu Zhu arrived, Meru came with him. The three men, plus one apprentice, sat down in the work shed at the edge of the yard and passed the letter around twice.

The messenger did not come inside. He leaned against the donkey trough outside, his head nodding as he dozed. In the past half month he had ridden two round trips between the western line and the new capital, worn through three horses, and not slept a full night once. Kamon had the apprentice bring him a bowl of hot soup with half a flatbread soaking in it. He took it, and it was gone in a few mouthfuls.

”Three months.” Meru spoke first, turning his unlit pipe between his fingers. ”Three months — it takes half a month just to walk from the West Bank to the western line. How does that account work?”

”It cannot be accounted for the whole line at once.” Lu Zhu said. He crouched, and drew in the packed earth of the shed floor with a charcoal stick. First a long line — the edge of the western line. Then seven points pressed into it. ”Seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages — if they all break ground together, three months will finish nothing. But turn the order around: repair the three most dangerous points first, then the most broken villages — and in three months a skeleton can stand. Once the skeleton stands, horses cannot break through it.”

”Which three points first?” Kamon asked.

”The grain cellar of Fort No. 6. The crack in Fort No. 3. The low wall of Date-Grove Village.” Lu Zhu said. Those were the three most deadly items on the half page of damage he had read in Horenheb’s last letter.

Kamon nodded, said nothing, and crouched down to study the line Lu Zhu had drawn. He looked at it for a long while. When he crouched, his knee made a small sound.

”The grain cellar of Fort No. 6 — I’ll put two men on it.” A voice spoke from the doorway.

It was Meri. He had just come back from the official warehouse, still carrying a roll of the new capital’s grain-storage inspection ledgers under his arm. He came in, crouched beside the drawing, and tapped the position of Fort No. 6 with a finger: ”A flooded grain cellar is almost always a leaking roof and damp floor. The fix is not complicated: re-slope the roof so the rain runs off; raise the floor, lay crushed stone, then reed matting on top; and add a low water-stop ridge at the doorway. I have two granary workers trained under my own hand — this job, they can do. I’ll have the drawings and the materials list written out tonight.” He was already halfway to the door, the ledger under his arm, and there was no ceremony in him — a man who kept granaries for a living learned early that a promise written down was worth more than a promise spoken.

”Good.” Lu Zhu said.

Meri finished and left. At the door he turned his head and added: ”The grain cellar is the belly of the whole line. Work on the belly — it must not be done carelessly.”

”How the works are to be built still has to be decided on the ground.” Lu Zhu said. ”A wall in the desert is not afraid of being attacked. It is afraid of being dug out — the wind hollows the earth out from under the wall’s base, and the wall pitches forward. That is how the wall of Fort No. 7 came to lean. So the footing must be faced with stone, clay packed into the joints, and a skirt of crushed stone laid along the base outside. All of this has to be tested on the site, one thing at a time.”

Meru broke in here: ”I have no hand in the towers. But the timber for the towers — the West Bank has it. Old willow. Heavy, stands against the wind. I’ll have it carried along the route.”

”The towers need not be tall.” Lu Zhu said. ”One every three li, and from the top of each tower a man can see the smoke of the two towers beside it — that is enough. The western line has already fixed the order of its beacon signals. The towers are the posts of that signaling line. Post them along the line, and whichever direction the enemy comes from, whichever direction the smoke rises, the whole line sees it at a glance.”

He paused, and said: ”And there is one thing more important than walls and towers.”

”What?” Kamon asked.

”Water.” Lu Zhu said. ”Wherever the western works reach, water must be carried to the same point. A day without water for the men who build the wall is a day the wall is delayed. This — write it into the reply to Horenheb.”

”And the wages?” Meru said. ”The guild’s rates — can the western line afford them?”

”They can.” Kamon said. ”What the western line cannot afford, the guild covers. Men do not go out for nothing.”

By the time the three men had finished in the shed, the dark was complete. Lu Zhu walked to the door and looked back: ”The reply goes out tomorrow. Add one line for me: the men are already on the road.”

He said it over his shoulder, and the three men behind him understood what the line meant, and what it would cost to make it true: the words had to become feet, and the feet had to become walls, and the walls had to be standing before the enemy’s patience ran out. Meru had already turned to his caravan lists. Kamon was already walking toward the guild hall. The line had been drawn. Tomorrow the ink would dry on it.

That evening, Kamon called the guild’s craftsmen together at the material yard.

Not all of them — the new capital’s own projects were still pressing, and the only men who could come to the meeting were those not on shift out of the guild’s three hundred-odd registered names. Even so, the yard stood thick with men, a dark mass of shoulders and shadows. A few oil lamps had been lit; the wind leaned the flames, and the men’s shadows swayed across the stone piles.

Kamon stood on a block of dressed stone and had the letter read aloud again. When the reading was done, his first words were:

”Voluntary. Men with sick families at home, with children they cannot leave — don’t come. Men who have never seen the desert — think hard before you come. The western line is not the new capital. One gust there can peel half the skin off a man.”

The crowd went quiet for a moment, and then the murmur rose.

”Three months, to stop cavalry?” A middle-aged stonemason clicked his tongue. ”I’ve built walls for twenty years. Never heard of a job this rushed.”

”That’s why they wrote the letter.” Kamon said.

The stonemason turned the words over and found no answer in them, and the crowd moved on to other questions — but the exchange had done its work. Every man there had seen the half brick. Every man there knew why the letter had been written. The joking had stopped an hour ago, and nothing had come to take its place except the quiet arithmetic each man was doing with his own life.

”How are the wages to be paid?” Someone asked.

”At the guild’s set rates — not a copper less.” Kamon said. ”What the western line cannot cover, the guild covers.”

”Covers?” The stonemason’s voice rose a notch. ”The guild’s books belong to all of us. When does that money come back?”

”While the men live, the money comes back.” Kamon said. ”Empty the western line, and the Libyans break through — the first thing they burn is the new capital’s stone yard. When that happens, there won’t be any books left to settle at all.”

The words landed, and the crowd was quiet for a long while.

A craftsman of about thirty moved half a step forward, and stopped. The men around him knew him: his old mother lay paralyzed in bed, and he could not leave. Kamon saw it, and did not urge him. After a moment the craftsman stepped back on his own — backing away with his head down, like a man who had done something wrong. Kamon waved a hand at him: ”Looking after your family is also holding the line.” The craftsman’s shoulders sagged, and he let out a long breath.

The men around him pretended not to have seen the exchange, the way men pretend not to see a kindness they might someday need for themselves. It was one of the oldest customs of the guild, older than its charters: a man’s family was part of his contract, and no one in that yard would have stood by while a mother lay helpless for the sake of a wall — however important the wall.

The first man to volunteer was a young craftsman. He had spent two years building houses in the new capital, and the calluses on his hands were thicker than many old masters’. He stepped forward and said: ”I’ll go. My father was conscripted to repair the border, and he never came back.”

The second was the old stonemason who had fled Thebes. He had been squatting in the crowd; he knocked his pipe out against a stone, and said: ”This old rack of bones of mine — one gust and it scatters. But I have laid the footings of temple walls under three dynasties, and I know better than any of you how to set a foundation in sand. I’ll go. Call it my one sack of lime for the western line.”

He spoke slowly, with a thread of self-mockery in his voice — the self-mockery of a man who has outlived his own usefulness and knows it, and has decided to laugh at it before anyone else can. Someone in the crowd laughed; and then, having laughed, found the laugh sat wrong in his mouth.

A young craftsman was just stepping forward when his own master caught him by the arm. The old master lowered his voice: ”How many years have you worked? The walls out west are a matter of life and death. You’d go out there to add to the confusion?” The young man strained against the grip, could not break it, and answered through a stiff neck, quietly: ”I wouldn’t add to the confusion. I learn fast.” The two of them wrestled in the middle of the crowd — until the master let go and stepped out himself, first. The young man stared. The master looked back at him and glared: ”What are you staring at? I go. You stay in the new capital and practice. When you’re good enough, you can come and take my place.”

The old master’s steps were measured as he walked into the line, and the young man watched him go, his neck still stiff. Later, the young man would become one of the most careful craftsmen in the yard — the kind who checks his own work twice and signs his name without being reminded. He would tell people, when asked, that he had learned it from a wall in the desert. He would not say that he had learned it from being left behind.

One by one, men stepped forward. One. Two. Five. Ten. Kamon had the apprentice write the names down as they came. When the apprentice reached the seventeenth name, a voice came from behind the crowd:

”Master. Let me go.”

The crowd parted. It was Seb.

He stood outside the ring of men, carrying an old leather pack on his back, stuffed so full it bulged — the contents were nothing but drawings. The firelight of the yard flushed his face red, but his voice was steady.

”The villages on the West Bank — if they had had one wall back then, my father...” He stopped there, and his throat worked. ”My father was conscripted to repair the border. He never came back. I have been learning defensive works for four years now. This time — let me go.”

Kamon looked at him for a long time. Then he turned his head and looked at Lu Zhu.

Lu Zhu had been standing in the shadow of the work shed the whole time, saying nothing. His fingertips tapped lightly against the edge of a drawing, and his eyes rested on the leather pack on Seb’s back. He had sewn that pack himself, four years ago — from a piece of old oilcloth left over from repairing a granary. The corners were worn soft and fuzzy now.

”Let him go.” Lu Zhu said.

Seb did not cheer, and he did not thank anyone. He only shifted the pack higher on his back, and walked into the line of volunteers. He stood very straight — straight as the walls he drew on his sheets.

The apprentice went on writing names. The last to volunteer was a thin, small carpenter, half a head shorter than Seb; when he reached the end of the line, he made a sweeping bow to the men around him: ”Honored masters — on the road ahead, I’ll ask your forbearance.” A burst of laughter went through the crowd, and the tension loosened by a few degrees.

The roll was closed. Kamon climbed back onto the stone block and spoke his last words:

”Those who go — the guild remembers you. Those who stay — the work does not stop. The walls of the new capital are still rising, and the roof of the official warehouse is not yet sealed. Out there, you represent the guild. What you build must earn a word of praise from the soldiers of the western line. Whoever shames the guild — when he comes back, he can pack his own bedroll and go.”

Someone in the crowd answered, and a low chorus of agreement followed. The lamp oil was nearly spent; the flames shrank to points, stretching the standing men’s shadows long across the ground.

After the meeting broke up, the volunteers did not go home at once. They squatted in twos and threes at the edge of the yard, passing tools between them — one borrowing a chisel, another measuring out a length of hemp rope — running through their kits one more time. Some drew out their dried rations and counted them, and put them away again. Some looked up at the sky and said the road west dried out the farther you walked, and a man should start early tomorrow.

Kamon was the last to leave. He walked a circuit of the yard, blowing out the lamps that were still burning. When the wind came through, there was nothing left in the yard but stone and moonlight.

He stood a moment in that emptiness, listening. Somewhere beyond the lamplight, in the direction of the ferry crossing, a donkey brayed; somewhere closer, a man laughed low at his own joke. The yard was not empty at all — it was full of the sound of men who had decided.

After the meeting, Lu Zhu called Seb to the rear courtyard of the official warehouse.

A single lamp burned in the courtyard. Lu Zhu did not speak of the western line. His first question was: ”Are all your drawings with you?”

”All of them.” Seb set down the pack and took the sheets out one by one: the low-wall plans of the West Bank settlements, the drainage drawings of the new capital’s houses, the gradient calculations of the southern channel works — and a few watchtower sketches of his own trying. At the bottom of the pack, his hand hesitated, and then he brought out the thing wrapped in old cloth: a length of mud-brick.

Lu Zhu looked at it once, and did not ask. He laid Seb’s watchtower sketches flat on the table, one by one, and studied them closely. At the third sheet, his fingertip tapped the position of the tower base.

”The tower footing must be dug deep.” He said. ”A tower in the desert — set it shallow, and the first wind leans it. Dig down to firm earth, and face the footing with stone. Write that into your drawings.”

Seb crouched, and noted it down by the lamp. His hand shook a little as he wrote — not from fear. This was the night he had waited for too long.

”When you reach the western line,” Lu Zhu said, ”the first thing is not drawing. It is walking. Walk all seven forts, four watch posts, and seven villages — measure them with your feet. Horenheb is a fighting man; he will push you. You may go fast — but every step must be set solid.”

Seb nodded. His throat moved, and in the end he asked only one thing: ”Master — am I good enough?”

Lu Zhu raised his head and looked at him. The lamp flame jumped between them.

”Better than anyone.” He said. ”Because you have stood where the wall fell.”

The next three days, the craftsmen’s village of the new capital was busier than usual.

The volunteers numbered twenty-five in all. Kamon had the guild’s senior bookkeeper check the rolls through the night: four quarrymen, nine wall-builders, five rammed-earth men, three carpenters, two who could judge mortar mixes, and Meri’s two granary workers. The tally came to exactly twenty-five, and the bookkeeper, a man who had spent forty years making numbers behave, found himself checking the total twice before he believed it: twenty-five was precisely the number of men who could be spared — no more, and no less. The bookkeeper checked the rolls, then the wages, the abacus beads clicking deep into the night, and finally wrote one line at the bottom of the register: ”One third advanced by the guild; the remainder to be offset against the western line’s future revenues.”

The line was a risk, and every man in the yard knew it. The western line had no revenues to speak of — the court sent nothing but orders. What the line could offset was its own future harvests, its own trade, its own survival — the only coin a border has. The bookkeeper had written the line without comment, the way a man writes a figure he has already decided to believe in.

Meru’s side got the materials ready faster than the men. The stone was on hand — drawn from the alliance’s river-flat yard; the lime had to come from the West Bank, and he wrote a note for the next caravan to detour directly; the timber was made over from the old door planks of the new capital’s official warehouse — the planks had been replaced in last year’s renovation and had been gathering dust in the storehouse ever since, perfect for nailing together the skeletons of watchtowers. He also had his men run up sixty sandbags — coarse linen, double-stitched: ”For works in the desert, a sandbag is better than a stone. Fast for patching a breach.”

Nefer came too, with a crew of women from the weaving workshop. They hauled out the coarse linen stored in the warehouse and sat up through the night sewing ration bags. She sewed as she talked: ”Twenty-odd mouths, once they’re in the desert — three meals a day, that’s seven hundred meals in a tenday. The rations I’ll cover. Two water skins per man, all newly patched.” When the last stitch was done, she stacked the bags in five piles under the lamp, and counted every pile.

She counted the way she counted everything — twice, and then once more from the other direction. Nefer had learned her counting in the weaving workshop, where an error of one thread could mean a warp that would not hold; the habit had followed her into every other room of this city. When the counting came out even, she nodded once to herself and went home, leaving the piles neat and exact under the lamp, like ranks of soldiers waiting for a command they already knew.

Seb spent those three days away from the yard. He shut himself in his quarters in the craftsmen’s village and drew his drawings all over again.

He drew everything he had accumulated over four years: the defensive low walls of the West Bank settlements, the drainage channels of the new capital’s houses, the channel gradients of the southern waterworks — he pulled out every line he had ever drawn and re-laid them against the western terrain. There were no western mountains on his paper, no western sand. But Horenheb’s letter had told him clearly: the positions of the seven forts, the bearings of the four watch posts, the distances between the seven villages. Working from those, he drew all night.

The next evening, Hapy and Kes came. Hapy brought a bundle of brick samples fresh from the new capital’s kilns, saying the wind out west was hard and the facing bricks had to be chosen from the thoroughly fired ones. Kes brought nothing; he said as he came through the door: ”Don’t seal off all the gates in those village walls. People go in and out, livestock go in and out — leave a gate that can be shut. That’s how the fences of my tribe’s settlement were done.” The three of them worked over Seb’s drawings by a single lamp, changing several points. When they finished, Hapy said suddenly: ”Seb — when you get out there, show them our kiln samples. Don’t let anyone say the West Bank’s apprentices only know how to draw.” ”Right,” Kes took up the thread, ”and let them see that what the master taught us is not only drawing.”

Seb did not answer. He only saw the two of them out. As the door closed, he heard Hapy say quietly to Kes, outside: ”This time, he really is carrying it alone.”

By dawn, he had finished. On the leather sheet lay one complete drawing: seven squares, four points, ring after ring of fine lines — like a net.

On the night before departure, Seb packed.

He rolled the new drawings into a cylinder and slid them into a bamboo tube. The tube was a gift from Lu Zhu; along its body a line of small characters had been carved — ”Western Line Works Drawings.” He set the tube into the pack. Then he took one more thing from the bottom of his chest.

It was a length of mud-brick. He had picked it out of the ruins of his family’s old house on the West Bank, four years ago; its broken edges were ragged, and it was wrapped in a piece of old cloth. He unwrapped it, looked at the brick for a while, wrapped it again, and laid it in the very bottom of the pack. The drawings on top. The brick beneath.

He had kept that brick through four years and three moves — through the apprenticeship, through the first walls he ever drew, through the night his master sewed him the pack. It was not a relic. It was a question he carried: whether the walls that fell could be built again, and whether the hands that rebuilt them would be his. He had no answer yet. But the brick, at least, had agreed to travel.

Footsteps sounded outside. He opened the door. It was Lu Zhu. Neither of them spoke. Lu Zhu reached out, tightened the pack straps on Seb’s shoulders, and pressed his hand once on Seb’s shoulder.

”When you get there,” Lu Zhu said, ”look at the ground first, then draw. If the drawing is wrong, change it.”

Seb nodded.

At dawn, the column gathered at the mouth of the craftsmen’s village.

Twenty-five craftsmen, tools on their backs, leading three pack donkeys loaded with materials. Meru’s caravan had come too — a dozen-odd camels carrying stone and lime, waiting in the direction of the ferry crossing. Nefer and her women handed the ration bags out one by one; if anyone drew two extra, she chased them down: ”They’re counted by head. Take more, and the ones at the back go short.”

There were not many people to see them off. Those who had to work still went to work; among those who came were a few craftsmen’s families. A young wife followed the column half a li, and was finally pushed back by her husband, who turned his head twice: ”Go back. Mind the children.” She stopped — she did not cry — only raised the water skin in her hand high and shook it.

From the direction of the ferry crossing, the camel bells of Meru’s caravan began to ring. Ding, dang. Ding, dang. One after another, going west.

As the column left the craftsmen’s village, Seb looked back once. The walls of the new capital gleamed pale in the morning light — the roof of the official warehouse, the banner of the healing hall, the houses he had drawn, one after another, receding behind him.

He turned his head forward, tightened the bamboo tube in his pack, and walked at the head of the column.

He did not look back a second time. Behind him, the shapes of the city he had helped draw were already softening into morning haze — the walls he had measured, the drains he had laid, the houses whose roofs he had stood on with a plumb line. He had drawn them, and they stood. Ahead of him lay a line he had never seen, defended by a man he had never met, and the first step of the road to it was already under his feet. He walked, and the camel bells went on ahead of him, and the desert opened like a door.

That same night, on the western line, a scout rode in with news.

The horses in the Libyan camp had been turned out to graze night grass. The felt saddles had been carried out of the tents and fitted onto the horses’ backs, one after another, being tried. The camp’s lights burned twice as thick as the nights before.

The scout said he had lain on the sand ridge counting through half the night, and in the end lost count. He remembered only one thing: at this hour in other years, the men of the camp would already be asleep. This year — not one man slept.

Their time was shorter than anyone had believed.
