Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 79: Chapter 1: Nekhem Raises the Army — Thebes Sealed Under Martial Law

Before the sky was light, six characters were pasted on all four gates of Thebes.

”Cleanse the court of the wicked — restore the old gods.”

The man who pasted them carried a bucket of paste and walked street by street, brushing as he went. The paste was cold in the bucket, the brush worn to a stub, and his breath steamed in the dark. He did not hurry. He worked the way a man works who has done the same thing many times before the city wakes: one dip, one sweep, the characters going up straight and even under the lantern’s light.

When he reached the east gate, a vegetable hawker had just set up his stall. He looked up, read what was pasted on the wall, and his face went white. Those who could read read it aloud; those who could not asked; and those who understood what they heard gathered up their baskets and slipped back into the alleys, one after another, without a word between them.

The manifesto was written on sheepskin, the characters large, the ink heavy — heavy enough that where the brush had crossed, the writing stood up from the surface in ridges. Its meaning ran like this: the pharaoh has been blinded by the treacherous officials of the Chief Construction Bureau; they have abandoned the ancestral gods, torn down the temples, and the world has fallen into disorder because of them. The High Priest of the Great Temple of Amun could not bear to see the backbone of Egypt pulled out, and so he has raised the righteous host — to cleanse the court of the wicked and restore the old gods. All who believe in Amun are the righteous host. All who obstruct the righteous host are enemies of the gods.

The reading aloud spread through the crowd at the gate like a ripple: a baker mouthing the words to himself, a water boy reading over a stranger’s shoulder, a grandmother pressing her hand to her mouth. Somewhere a child asked what the words meant, and no one answered him.

Before the sun was fully up, the banners above the wall had already changed.

The ram’s banners of Amun rose, one after another. The banners had been sewn through the night; some still carried the damp of fresh starching, and they snapped loudly in the morning wind, the white ram’s horns stitched on dark cloth standing out as the cloth bellied and fell. The soldiers on the wall wore white cloth bands pinned to their chests, each band painted with the horns of a ram. They stood in ranks along the wall’s foot, from the east gate to the west gate, and their blades and spears caught the morning light in one long unbroken line, running from one end of the wall to the other like a thread of silver.

”Back into your houses!” A soldier beat a bronze gong as he walked the street. ”By order of the High Priest, the city is sealed today! Every household shuts its doors! Every street clears!”

Wherever the gong passed, the street emptied. The water seller carried his buckets back home. The flatbread seller banked his oven. The cloth shop’s owner fitted his door planks into place one by one; at the last plank, he looked out through the crack for a moment — and then drew back inside, quickly. The sound of the latch falling was the last sound the street heard from that door.

Only before the official granary south of the city did the crowd not scatter. It grew.

A company of soldiers was pasting seal strips across the granary’s gate. The strips were new, the paste still wet on them; the seal they bore was old — the temple’s seal, the ram’s head of Amun. Before the gate stood the old granary keeper, a man who had watched this granary for half his life. His hands were the color of old grain, worn by thirty years of counting sacks, and he blocked the door planks with his body: ”This is the official granary. You cannot—”

The soldier in front did not answer him. He shoved the old man aside with one hand. The keeper stumbled two paces and struck the doorpost; the breath went out of him in one long sound, and he had to grip the post to keep his feet. He lunged forward again, but one of his own helpers caught his arm. The helper’s hands were shaking. ”Uncle,” he whispered, ”don’t. They carry blades.”

The old granary keeper opened his mouth. In the end, nothing came out. He watched the seal strips go up, one after another; he watched the granary door close before his eyes, the strips stretched across the crack where the light used to show; he listened to the grain sacks inside that door, bag by bag, changing masters. He had counted those sacks a thousand times in his life, through lean years and fat years. He would never count them again.

Inside the city, at the mouths of several wells, wooden signboards had been set up. The signboards were freshly planed, the paint still smelling of oil, and the lettering on them read: water will be issued by the double-hour; soldiers draw first, households after. At the river landing, the water point had been fenced around with stakes, and two soldiers stood at the fence, blades at their belts, from morning to night. When their shadows lengthened and shortened with the sun, the waiting line moved with them, slowly.

A woman waited outside the fence with an empty jar. She waited half a double-hour for her turn at the water. When the jar came up, the water in it was muddy — a thin brown in the jar’s belly, with grit lying along the bottom. She did not dare complain. She looked at the two soldiers once, at the ground a second time, and picked up the jar and hurried away, holding it carefully so that not a drop of the brown water spilled.

”Before, it was the government that collected grain,” an old man said, squatting at the foot of a wall at a lane mouth, to the man beside him. His voice was dry, matter-of-fact, the voice of a man who had seen collectors come and go. ”Now the temple collects grain, collects water, collects the gates. Before long, they’ll be collecting heads.”

The man beside him hushed him and looked around. No one was watching; the lane was empty, the windows shut. Then he said, low: ”They say the High Priest holds soldiers, and the three towns outside the city have gone over to him. Who gives the orders in this city from now on — that’s still to be seen.”

”Whoever gives the orders, it won’t be us.” The old man sighed. ”Only — let it not come to war. When war comes, it’s people like us who die first.”

This lane was one of the oldest in Thebes. It was narrow; the mud walls on both sides had been worn dull by the years, polished by the shoulders of generations of porters passing through. On ordinary days, water sellers, date sellers, pot-menders, and shoulder-pole carriers jammed the lane until it could barely be walked; the air rang with calling voices and the clatter of trade. Today, the lane was so empty that a man could hear his own footsteps, and the silence made the sound of every step twice as loud.

The water seller was called A-Bu. He had sold water in Thebes for thirty years — drawn it from the wells of the east and carried it to the west end of the city to sell, one yoke-load of water for a handful of barley. The yoke had worn a smooth groove in his shoulder; he knew the weight of every step of the route, the turn of every corner. Today his buckets had waited two double-hours at the well, and the water that came up was muddier than any dry-season water he remembered — the sediment swirled up from the bottom as the rope ran through his hands. He carried the load west; all along the way, every door was shut, and the only sound that leaked out through the cracks was the muffled crying of children.

A-Bu rested at the mouth of an alley. He set the yoke down carefully, so that no water would slop over the rim, and rubbed his shoulder through his tunic. He looked up at the sky. The sun was out, bright and full — but the city held no warmth at all.

”This light,” he muttered to himself, ”why doesn’t it warm anything anymore?”

A-Bu hefted the pole and walked on west. Passing the grain shop, he saw a ring of people before its door.

The shop had taken down only half its door planks. The shopkeeper stood inside, in the dimness of his own shop, his voice gone hollow: ”I’m sorry, I’m sorry. From today, grain is allotted by the official granary. This shop... this shop has nothing to sell.”

”There was half a granary’s worth yesterday!” A man in the crowd shouted. ”How can it be gone?”

”Last night... last night the granary’s people came.” The shopkeeper wrung his hands, the fingers working against each other without his knowing. ”They said that during the lockdown, every grain shop’s stock is to be counted and sealed. What’s left will be rationed out by household. To buy grain from now on, you must bring your household tablet.”

The crowd made one low, rumbling sound — a sound made of many smaller sounds, of breath drawn and half-swallowed, of feet shifting on the stones. Someone turned and ran home — ran two steps, and turned back. The house was right there; but whether the name on the household tablet could be turned into grain — no one could say.

Around the corner, a company of men came toward them.

A dozen men in old priest’s robes carried a wooden tablet of the god Amun, walking and singing as they went. The tablet was painted with a ram’s head, the paint fresh enough to glisten. The tune was old — a hymn tune from the temple, worn by generations of voices; the words were new: ”Amun above, guard Egypt! Wicked ministers hold court, the sky sends divine wrath! Follow the High Priest, restore our old gods!” The man leading them had already shredded his voice; he sang with his head back and his throat bare, and the singing set the whole street buzzing, bouncing off the shut doors like water off a roof.

A child watched through a door crack; an adult hand snatched him back, and the door clapped shut.

”These people,” A-Bu said, shifting the water pole to his other shoulder, ”used to step into the gutter when they saw an official. Now they put on robes, and they’re somebody.”

”Somebody, nothing more.” A pot-mender squatted under the eaves, his brazier cold at his feet, and said, low: ”Last night they went house to house, knocking, asking whether you believe in Amun. If you said no, your name went into a book. If you said yes, you got a white cloth band. With a band, you cut the line at the well; you get first pick of the grain.”

A-Bu said nothing. He looked down at his own buckets — the water in them was still muddy. He had carried that water through half the city, and the only thing it had bought him was the weight.

One lane away, in the rich quarter south of the city, the scene was different.

Before several great gates, donkeys and carts were packed into a knot, the animals lowing and stamping in the cold. On the carts: bundled boxes, bedding, grain sacks, a cage of geese that would never be eaten in the city. Below the carts: people arguing in low voices — the men wanting to leave the city, the women wanting to stay, the steward bowing between them, sweat standing on his forehead though the morning was cold: ”Master, the gates were shut this morning. The north gate lets out only soldiers; the south gate lets in only official grain. We cannot get out!”

”Then the grain?” the rich man hissed. ”The grain in the granary — can it be saved?”

No one answered. The steward looked up at the sky. It was overcast; the clouds hung low, gray as old iron, as if they were about to fall on people’s heads. In the silence, a donkey brayed once, and the sound was too loud.

At the schoolroom, the students had been dismissed. The old schoolmaster sat alone in the empty room, turning a roll of old scripture over and over, the papyrus whispering against his palms. The benches where his students had sat that morning still held their warmth, and the room smelled of the reed mats and lamp oil of an ordinary day. He had taught for the better part of his life, and for the first time he felt that the principles in his mouth could not be put to use — not a single one of them — here.

On the east wall of the city, Young Nubu stood behind a crenellation, and there he stood all day.

Nubu was a stonemason from the south of the city, just past twenty, and his skill ranked among the best of his generation. Three days ago, a company of soldiers had knocked on his family’s door, read out his name, and said: by order of the High Priest, all craftsmen are conscripted into the city-defense corps. Refuse, and you are judged an enemy of the gods. His mother clung to his leg and wept, her fingers digging into the cloth of his tunic. His father squatted on the threshold and said, at last, one sentence: ”Go. Don’t be stubborn. The blade is in their hand.”

So he had come up onto the wall.

The work on the wall was, in fact, sentry duty. Stand a day, receive two barley cakes. He held the cakes in his hand and could not eat a single bite; they sat in his palm, still warm from the baking, and his throat would not work. He could not understand it: a stonemason’s hands are made for a chisel, not a spear. He looked down at his own palm — fifteen years of callus lay there, thick at the thumb and the heel of the hand, and white stone dust was still embedded in the creases, the dust of a thousand stones dressed and fitted. The dust would not wash out, no matter how long he scrubbed; it had become part of the skin. He closed his fingers slowly, and felt the callus bend.

”What are you looking at?” An old soldier sidled over, his spear leaned against his shoulder.

”My hands.” Nubu said.

The old soldier laughed, showing a mouth of yellow teeth, one of them broken off at the root: ”What’s to see in hands? They tell you to stand, you stand. They tell you to cut, you cut. Think too much, and your head rolls.” He made a quick gesture across his own neck with one finger, and moved on down the wall, whistling.

Nubu said nothing. He tucked the barley cakes back into his coat, turned around, and looked toward the city. The roofs ran away below him, gray and brown in the morning light, the lanes between them dark as cuts.

Half of the city’s chimneys no longer smoked. On an ordinary morning at this hour, the smoke would have lain over the roofs in a blue haze, the city’s cooking rising in a hundred threads. Today, whole stretches of the roofscape were bare; only the incense smoke from the temple’s direction still rose, puff after puff, thick and deliberate, staining half the sky a dim gray.

”This city,” he thought, ”how did it come to this?”

The ferry landing south of the city was quieter still.

Thebes’s landing had always been one of the busiest on the Nile. Grain boats heading north, salt boats heading south, passenger ferries crossing the river — the sculling oars never stopped, day or night; the water was never without its complement of hulls. Today, a wooden fence had been thrown across the landing, and a signboard stood outside it: during the lockdown, no boat may leave the shore. Several cargo boats lay beached at the waterline, half-unloaded, their owners squatting on the bows, slapping the gunwale again and again, waiting for something even they could not name. The slap of palm on wood was the only sound the landing made.

The old boatman A-Tu squatted at the stern of his own boat, wiping his oar, stroke after stroke. The oar had long since been polished bright — the wood smooth as bone under his callused hands; still he wiped it. One wipe, then a glance toward the city gate. Another wipe, another glance. The wiping was not about the oar; the glancing was the real work. He had been a boatman on this stretch of river for thirty years, and he knew the look of every hull on the water, every man who walked the landing. He knew, too, that a man who looks at the city gate all day learns nothing — but a man who looks at it between the strokes of his wiping learns a great deal.

”Uncle A-Tu,” a young boatman on the next boat said, low, ”they say the High Priest has raised the army, and all three towns outside the city have raised the ram’s banner. Our boats — will we ever get out on the river again?”

”We won’t.” A-Tu said. ”There are river soldiers’ boats out there now. Coming downriver, going upriver — they search them all. They have torches and pikes, and they will not listen to an oar.”

”Then what do we eat?”

A-Tu did not answer. He laid the oar across his knees and ran his fingers down the grain of the wood, once, all the way — the old feel of it, the same grain he had known since he cut the tree himself. Then he said: ”Don’t think that far ahead. The boat is here, the oar is here, the man is here. As long as a man lives, there’s always a river to put a boat on.”

As he spoke, his eyes stayed fixed on the city’s east. The east — where the old temple stood, black against the morning sky.

The old temple stood on the high ground east of the city, one of the oldest buildings in Thebes. Its walls were black — polished black by centuries of incense smoke, so that in certain lights they looked wet. Its gate stood half open, and soldiers stood both inside the gate and outside it, their spears grounded, their eyes on the street.

The chief officiant was confined in the temple’s back courtyard.

The courtyard was small: three mud-brick rooms, one well, one old date tree. When the chief officiant had been brought in, he had carried only a change of robes. He rose early every day, stood a while in the courtyard watching the sun climb over the temple eaves, and then went back to his room. There he turned the pages of the acoustics scroll he had brought — page by page, slowly, the way a man drinks water when he is very thirsty and must not gulp.

The scroll had come with him from the new capital. A hand-copied transcript made by Lu Zhu’s order — the pages fresh, the script neat, the ink still black rather than brown. The words he had spoken at Thebes’s city gate — ”The gates of Thebes can bar men; they cannot bar the sun” — had been spoken looking at that very scroll, standing in the gate’s shadow, with the sun behind him.

Now the gates had truly barred him. He thought about that often, in the mornings, with the sun coming up over the temple eaves and the shadow of the courtyard wall shortening on the ground. The sun came over the wall regardless. He had never seen it fail.

His old servant Lau brought him his meals every day. Lau was past sixty; he had served the old temple for most of his life, and he had been in the temple when the chief officiant was still an acolyte — a boy in a white robe, learning the prayers by heart. With each meal he carried in the news, item by item, setting the bowl down and speaking low: the granaries sealed; the signboards up at the wells; the banners changed on the wall; the craftsmen formed into corps.

”Formed into corps?” The chief officiant asked.

”Formed.” Lau said. ”Stonemasons, carpenters, rammers — all of them, into the city-defense corps. They call it guarding the city. It’s watching people, really. The wages — they say they’ll be paid, but no one knows if they will.” He paused, and added: ”The younger ones cry at night. I hear them, in the houses near the temple. They did not join; they were taken.”

The chief officiant said nothing. He walked to the date tree and looked up. The dates were still green, hanging in clusters among the leaves, each cluster heavy enough to bend its branch.

”The dates on the tree,” he said, ”no one will pick them this year.”

”Who’s left in the streets?” Lau said. ”Every house is shut. And even with the doors shut, the ears are still pricked. People’s hearts are harder to manage than city gates.”

The chief officiant stood under the date tree for a long time. The wind came; the leaves rustled, like a hundred open palms clapping, softly. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, and the wind moved the hem of his robe.

”Lau,” he said, ”do you believe these gates will stay shut for long?”

Lau did not dare answer. He looked around. The soldiers outside the courtyard gate had their backs to them; the white cloth bands on their knife handles swayed in the wind, and one of the soldiers was humming, tunelessly, to himself.

”I believe,” the chief officiant said, to himself, ”someone will come.”

In the Great Temple of Amun, the incense burned heavier than ever.

On the first day of the rising, the worshippers’ line reached past the temple gate, stretching down the street until it curved out of sight. They were mostly old people — bent backs, incense in hand, kneeling with every step, their foreheads touching the stones. These were the true believers. They had believed in Amun all their lives; now the High Priest of Amun had raised the army to ”restore the old gods,” and they felt that heaven was finally turning back. The tears ran down their cheeks and dropped on the stone, and the incense smoke rose in a thick column above them.

There were young people who did not believe. A water boy passed the temple gate, was jostled by the queuing crowd, staggered, and swore under his breath: ”Worshipped for half a lifetime, and once the gates shut, you can’t even draw water.” An old woman nearby heard him, snatched up a fist of incense ash from the burner at her feet, and flung it at him; the ash puffed against his coat and clung there. ”Blasphemy! The gods will punish you!” The boy hunched his neck and ran; when he was far enough, he turned back and spat, once, hard, into the dust of the road.

None of this could Nekhem see.

He spent his days in the quietest chamber of the temple’s depths. The chamber’s door was thick, and its walls thicker — stone on mud-brick on stone; the sounds of the outer temple — the incense, the chanting, the weeping — reached him only as a low undertone, like rain falling somewhere far away. He sat behind his desk with his hands folded, and the silence of the chamber lay around him like a garment.

The man in white knelt at the chamber door and reported, item by item: the four gates shut; the granaries sealed; the wells managed; the craftsmen conscripted; the banners changed. The grain roads outside the city, all cut. In the direction of the new capital, the vanguard has already crossed the river bend.

Nekhem sat behind the desk, listening, and nodded at each item — a small, precise nod, the nod of a man checking entries against a ledger. His white robe was still spotless, without a single crease; the cloth fell from his shoulders without a wrinkle, as if it had been smoothed by an invisible hand. An oil lamp burned on the desk; under the lamp lay a sheepskin scroll — the draft of the manifesto of war, revised three times, every revision in his own hand. He had read it so many times that he knew the look of every stroke, where the brush had been lifted, where pressed down.

”The manifesto?” he asked.

”Posted.” The man in white said. ”At the four gates, the market, the landing — all posted. Many read it; many... believe it.”

Nekhem said nothing. His fingers lay on the desk; his fingertips rubbed the ram’s-head emblem, slowly, in circles. Another circle. Another. The emblem was worn smooth at the top from years of that same rubbing, and his fingertips knew the shape of every curve of it in the dark.

”That many believe — that is good.” After a long while he said: ”But what we need is not believers. What we need is how many of the believers will take up a blade.” He said the word ”blade” the way a man says a weight he is holding. ”Faith fills a temple. It does not fill a levy.”

The man in white lowered his head further, until his forehead nearly touched the floor.

”The soldiers of Thebes, plus those who have come over from the other towns — four thousand within the city.” He said. ”Grain: the official granaries and the private ones together will feed the whole city for half a year. Water: the twenty-four wells within the city, plus the aqueduct from outside — cannot be cut off at once. Upper Egypt has forty-two towns and cities, great and small; more than twenty have already sent envoys, willing to rise with the High Priest.”

”The aqueduct.” Nekhem repeated. He opened his eyes; his gaze settled on the lamp’s flame, and the flame steadied under his looking. ”The aqueduct’s sluice gate lies outside the city. Whoever holds that gate holds half the city by the throat. Not the soldiers, not the banners — the water. A city without water is a city without a future.”

”The gate has soldiers on it.” The man in white said.

”Double them.” Nekhem said. ”That half of the city’s throat must not loosen.”

He rose slowly and walked to the west wall. A map of Thebes hung there — old, handed down from his father’s generation, the sheepskin darkened with age, the lines drawn in a hand long dead. On the map, the city stood foursquare: one wall, four gates; beyond the gates, great stretches of fields ran all the way to the Nile, marked with the little signs for canals and wells. He had known the map since childhood; he had watched his father’s finger move across it, planning, and now his own finger moved across it the same way.

He raised his hand; his fingertip moved slowly across the map. From the north gate, along the official road out of the city, then north — to the direction of the new capital.

”The people of the new capital,” he said, ”should be seeing our banners by now.”

”The vanguard has reached the river bend.” The man in white said. ”General Panhesy’s men sent back word: the new capital’s walls are not what they were half a month ago. The wall is newly rammed; a blocking wall has been raised inside the gate tunnel; two ditches have been dug outside the city. The wall-head is higher by a foot or more, and the crenellations are even.”

Nekhem’s finger stopped on the map.

”What does he say?”

”General Panhesy says it can be surrounded.”

”Surround, but do not attack.” Nekhem said. ”The new capital is a city that stands on the hearts of its people. Surround that for half a month, and it will crack from the inside by itself. On the day it cracks, the gates open by themselves.” He took his finger off the map, and looked at the space where the new capital was marked. ”A wall can be made new in a fortnight. A heart cannot be made new in a generation.”

He turned. In the lamplight his face was half lit, half dark — the lamp on one side, the shadow of the map frame on the other.

”So,” he said, ”I am going north — to see the new capital’s wall with my own eyes.”

The man in white raised his head — and lowered it again at once.

”High Priest, once you leave, Thebes—”

”Thebes has walls, grain, water, soldiers.” Nekhem said. ”Pamun stays to hold the city. He is a steady man.” He paused, and added, as if weighing the words: ”Steady is what the city needs now. Not brilliant; steady. And besides—” he paused again, ”I am not going north to look at scenery. I want every town in Upper Egypt to know that what rose is not a written manifesto — it is this man. When they see my banner, they will know which side to stand on. A manifesto can be torn down. A man must be answered to.”

He walked to the door, stopped, and asked: ”That chief officiant — is he still behaving?”

”Quietly, in the back courtyard.” The man in white said. ”Reads and writes every day; makes no noise. Only his old servant comes and goes.”

”Let him.” Nekhem said. ”A man shut in a courtyard cannot raise waves. But the scroll he brought back—” his fingertips rubbed the emblem again, the smooth circle of it, ”sound. light. The people of the new capital stripped the gods’ clothes off, and even wrote it into a book. A man like that is harder to handle than a hundred thousand soldiers.”

”Shall we—”

”No.” Nekhem said. ”He is already a man in a cage. It is what is outside the cage that needs the care.”

At dusk, in the back courtyard of the old temple, the chief officiant remembered his meeting with the High Priest.

It was the first night he had been brought into the old temple. Nekhem had come alone, without attendants — a tall figure in white, crossing the dark courtyard without a sound. The two of them had sat under the date tree for a long time, the leaves moving above them in the night wind.

”You are the best priest I have ever known.” Nekhem had said. ”I listened to your prayers from the inner sanctuary for twenty years. Your voice is steadier than mine. When you spoke, the hall held its breath.”

”The voice is given by the walls.” The chief officiant had said. ”I know that now. A good voice in a bad hall is a voice thrown away.”

”You know it now — but you are too late.” Nekhem had said. ”You went to the new capital; you saw that temple without a roof, and you believed the god lives in the light. You are wrong. The god lives in the hearts of men, and the hearts live in order. When order breaks, the hearts scatter; when the hearts scatter, Egypt is finished. A temple without a roof is not a temple. It is a barn with good acoustics.”

”And the High Priest believes,” the chief officiant had said, ”that by shutting the gates, order is kept?”

”At least, a shut-in Thebes is still Egypt’s Thebes.” Nekhem had said.

”A shut-in Thebes,” the chief officiant had said, ”is a dead Thebes.”

Neither of them had spoken again. The night wind came down off the temple eaves and stirred the date leaves into a soft rustle. When he left, Nekhem had stood a while at the courtyard gate, without turning back, his white robe catching the moonlight.

”Your master builder,” he had said, ”tore down the miracles and saved the people’s hearts. But he also tore down Egypt’s rules. One day you will see what the hearts of men look like with no rules.”

The gate had closed behind him. The sound of the bar falling had echoed in the empty courtyard for a long time.

The chief officiant stood under the date tree, watching that gate. After a long time he said, to himself:

”I will wait and see. See who sees first.”

He had told no one these words. Not even Lau. Some thoughts a man keeps, as a granary keeps its seed.

Tonight he stood under the date tree again. The moon was up, large and white, and it painted the courtyard’s mud-brick walls as if they had been freshly whitewashed — every crack and every stone visible in the silver light. He looked at the moon, and suddenly remembered the day of the Great Ceremony in the new capital — the light that flooded the altar, pouring over the stone as if the stone itself were drinking it.

”Light climbs over walls,” he said, low. ”Walls cannot stop it.”

The next morning, the chief officiant called Lau to him.

”Lau,” he said, ”in all your years in the temple — the people at the city gates, at the ferry landing — who still has some standing? Can you tell me?”

Lau thought, rubbing his chin with the back of his hand, the way he always did when he was going to give a careful answer. ”A-Tu at the landing. In the stonemasons’ guild south of the city, there’s a young man called Nubu — conscripted to the wall the other day. A good hand, they say; the guild counted on him. And... a few of the clerks in the grain houses east of the city are the sons of temple worshippers. Their fathers have been faithful all their lives.”

”Good.” The chief officiant said. ”You can leave through the temple gate — they watch you, but only as a man buying rice and vegetables. From today, when you go out each day, do one thing: keep everything you hear about the city. The landing. The gates. The grain houses. Go to them one by one.” He spoke slowly, weighing each place, as if he were laying stones. ”Not to ask questions. Questions get a man noticed. Just to be there, and to listen.”

”You mean to—”

”I do not know what will come.” The chief officiant said. ”But I know the gates will not stay shut forever. When that day comes, there must be people inside the city ready to answer. And the people who answer must first know one another. A door cannot be opened by one man; it is opened by many hands that have learned each other’s grip.”

Lau left. At the courtyard gate he looked back once. The chief officiant stood under the date tree, drawing slowly in the sand with a twig. What he drew was a wall — and in the wall, a gate. He drew the gate twice as large as the wall itself, and then he smoothed the sand and began again, the same drawing, over and over, as if he were practicing the shape of the thing to come.

The gate was open.

Nekhem left the city on the second morning.

He left by the north gate. The north gate was the only gate kept open after the lockdown; soldiers came and went through it, their identity tokens checked, their marks signed in the guardhouse ledger, the ink still wet on the pages. When Nekhem’s carriage reached the gate, the guards knelt in unison, foreheads to the ground, not daring to raise them. The kneeling spread through the gate tunnel like a wave, and the sound of forty men going down at once was the loudest sound the gate had made all morning.

He lifted the carriage curtain and looked out. In the gate tunnel, the two door panels stood half open; beyond them, the official road ran into the morning mist, gray, its end invisible. The mist swallowed the road a bowshot ahead, so that the world beyond the gate seemed to end in white.

”Pamun.” He said.

Pamun knelt beside the carriage; the white cloth band on his armor swayed in the wind. His hand, resting on his knee, was still.

”The city I leave to you.” Nekhem said. ”Bar the four gates. Double the guards at the granaries. Double the water-gate watch. The city stands, and you stand. If the city falls—”

He did not finish. The curtain fell. The wheels ground over the stone slabs and carried him out of the city, creaking — the sound of the axles filling the tunnel, then softening, then gone.

The common people who had gathered at the gate knelt in a patch of ground, heads bowed, a hundred backs curved in the morning cold. An old woman reached out and touched the rut left by the carriage wheel — scooped up a handful of the dirt, and tucked it into her breast, as if it were a holy thing. The dirt was still warm from the wheel’s passing. Others stood in the lane mouths without kneeling; the patrol jabbed them with spear shafts, and they slowly sank down, their faces giving nothing.

The carriage moved out of the north gate, a bowshot’s distance, and Nekhem did not look back. It was the two great door panels behind him that moved instead — pushed slowly shut by sixteen soldiers, eight to a panel, their shoulders against the wood. The panels were old oak, banded with iron, and they moved in that long, grinding way of great weights.

The sound of the hinges came out of the gate tunnel, long and heavy, like an old bull lowing in anger. It ran the length of the tunnel, out into the open air, and was still.

The bar fell.

Click — a clean, sharp sound, like a blade being sheathed. In the silence after it, the whole city seemed to hold its breath.

The chief officiant’s days went on as before.

He read and wrote; he studied the acoustics scroll more slowly than he had ever studied scripture, his finger following the lines of the diagrams. When he reached the passage ”Sound does not scatter from the field,” he would read it aloud, softly, and listen to the sound bounce back from the mud walls — the walls answering him, the syllables returning complete. He did this every day, and every day the walls answered.

”This courtyard eats sound, too,” he told Lau. ”The temple’s walls ate sound so that men could not overhear the oracle. This courtyard’s walls eat sound so that men cannot overhear men. You see — it is never the voice that is the secret. It is the shape of the room.”

Lau understood only dimly, but he nodded. Every day he went out, and when he came back he reported what he had heard, item by item, his voice low and even: the banner on the wall changed again — a new one, the cloth stiffer. The granaries’ seal strips now numbered two, laid crossways over the first pair. The signboard at the well had new wording — ”soldiers draw first” had become ”the righteous host draws first,” and the lettering was larger. A boat at the landing had tried to slip away in the night; the river soldiers’ boats had driven it back, and its owner had taken twenty lashes at the water’s edge, with the whole landing watching.

The chief officiant listened and said nothing. He stood under the date tree and watched the shadow of the courtyard wall crawl, inch by inch, from west to east. He had begun to measure the days by that shadow.

One day he asked: ”What does A-Tu say?”

”A-Tu says—” Lau lowered his voice, ”the boat is here, the oar is here, the man is here. He says when that day comes, the river will be his.” Lau paused, and added: ”He said it the way he says everything. Not loud. But he has said it every day since the lockdown, to anyone from the landing who will listen.”

The chief officiant nodded. He raised his hand, caught a leaf drifting down from the tree, and pressed it between his fingers. The leaf was still green, tough in its center, and it held its shape under his thumb.

”Good.” He said. ”A-Tu is a man who can be relied on. A man who says the same thing every day, to anyone who will listen, means it.”

In those days, the lockdown guards around the old temple changed more often. By day they patrolled, company after company, their spear butts ringing on the stones; by night, torches burned from one end of the street to the other, and the flames threw the soldiers’ shadows, long and wavering, across the shut doors. From the courtyard, the chief officiant could hear the soldiers’ boots on the stone slabs — step after step, like someone coiling a rope around the city, lap by lap. The circle tightened, and the sound of it came through the walls at every hour.

The tighter the rope was wound, the calmer the chief officiant’s heart became. He sat under the date tree, and his hands were steady on the scroll, and when Lau came back from his rounds the chief officiant listened to his reports with the same even attention he gave the acoustics diagrams.

”Soon,” he said to the date tree, as if speaking to a man. ”They are already on the road.”

Three days later, a copy of the manifesto reached the new capital.

The messenger arrived in the night, his horse lathered, his clothes stiff with dust and river spray. He carried the transcript of the manifesto posted on Thebes’s four gates — the characters transcribed exactly, even the drips of the brush — and a military dispatch besides. The dispatch said: more than half of Upper Egypt’s towns have raised the banner with Nekhem; the rebels’ vanguard is still at the river bend, facing the royal army; and at the northern border, the Hittite armies have been shifting their forces — signs of a march south. The two sheets of sheepskin lay on the table together, and the lamp burned between them all night.

The lamps of the palace burned all night. Watchmen at the palace gate saw the lights in the audience hall window, and the messengers going in and out, and they knew without being told that something had changed in the world.

The next morning, the pacification edict left the palace. Its contents spread through the new capital’s offices the same day, read aloud in the courtyards and the corridors: the pharaoh, in wrath, names Horenheb, commander of the Western Desert garrison, vanguard of the pacification, ordering him south with the western line’s soldiers. The master builder Imhotep is ordered to lead a corps of craftsmen with the army — once Thebes is retaken, they are to enter the city and rush-repair its defenses. The northern garrisons and the eastern river fleet continue to gather at the new capital, to shield the royal city. The scribes who copied the edict worked through the day without a pause, and the ink dried on the sheets as fast as they were written.

The moment the edict was out, the streets of the new capital were buzzing.

News traveled fastest at the market. Flatbread sellers, date sellers, water carriers — the first thing anyone said to anyone was: ”Heard? We’re going to take Thebes.” The timid ones went pale, and set down their loads to listen with both hands; the bold ones rolled up their sleeves and said: ”High time! They shut their gates and cut off our grain. If we don’t bring them down, this autumn’s harvest won’t get into the city at all!” A date seller who had lost two shipments to the blockade stood with his fists clenched, and did not let go all morning.

Before the notice wall south of the city, the crowd was thicker than it had been for the Great Ceremony. Those who could read read, their lips moving; those who could not listened, leaning in. When the words ”General Horenheb takes the vanguard” came, men in the crowd clapped — a burst of palm on palm that startled the birds off the wall: ”With General Horen, we don’t fear the wolves of the west — what are a few sheep in the city?”

That afternoon, the men coming to register at the wall were a fifth again as many. The registrar could not keep up, his brush moving without stopping, and Tia went to help. She wrote fast, one name per line, her brush steady and her letters small and even. An old man reached the front of the line and said: ”My son is on the wall; my son-in-law is with the caravans. These old bones of mine can’t carry earth anymore, but I can watch a gate. Let me sit one night at the lane mouth — that counts for something.”

Tia wrote his name down, and when she finished, nodded to him: ”The lane mouth is windy at night, father. Wear an extra layer.”

The old man laughed, showing a mouth missing its front teeth: ”What do I fear from wind? The master builder said it: the wall belongs to everyone. I sit there, and the wall is behind me.”

Tia watched him walk away, his back bowed but his step firm, and then she turned back to the line and took the next name.

When the Chief Overseer brought the edict to the Chief Construction Bureau, Lu Zhu was studying the city’s defense map.

The map lay across the table, weighted at the corners with stone samples — the same map he had drawn and redrawn through the building years. He listened to the edict through, and said nothing at first. He took his charcoal and drew a single line on the map — from the new capital’s south gate, along the Nile, running south all the way to Thebes. The line was black and straight, drawn without a pause, the way a man draws a line he has been thinking about for a long time.

”When do we leave?” he asked.

”The edict says depart within three days, south with General Horen’s forward army.” The Overseer said. ”The general starts from the western line; you meet on the West Bank.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”Three days. Enough.”

He straightened, rubbed the charcoal dust from his fingertips, and tucked the charcoal back into his belt. He looked at the line on the map for a moment longer — the road south, the road back — and then he called toward the door: ”Send for Kamon.”

That afternoon, the assembly hall was full.

Lu Zhu, Kamon, Meru, Mery, Imset, Shafi, Asaf, Tia, the Chief Overseer. The same company as always — only this time, spread across the table’s center was not a defense map, but the road of the march. The charcoal line ran south on the paper, and the men who had spent years reading building plans read it the way they had always read plans: with the eyes of men who knew that every line meant work to be done, only this time the work was different.

”You all know the edict.” Lu Zhu said. ”I will keep it short. I and Kamon take a corps of craftsmen south with the army, to take the city back. The new capital — nothing here may loosen.” He looked around the table, and his gaze stopped at each face in turn, the way a man checks a wall for cracks before a flood. ”I will not be here to see it hold. So it must hold without being seen.”

He looked at Mery: ”Grain. Yours. The eleven official granaries, the twenty emergency sheds, the two hundred households storing grain — watch them, one by one. The rebels have fallen back to the river bend; that does not mean the grain road is open. The south’s grain still cannot come in. While the siege lasts, every handful of barley in this city is a soldier on the wall. Count it as such.”

Mery nodded and pressed the small notebook against his chest, his palm flat over the worn cover: ”I know. I’ve got the household accounts by heart — not one grain will go wrong. I’ve been keeping them for years; I’ll keep them through this.”

”Imset.” Lu Zhu said. ”The healing hall. You and your apprentice stay in the city. The city’s wound medicines and bleeding-cloth — and for Thebes’ side—” he paused, ”once Thebes is retaken, the wounded will only grow in number. The healing hall’s foundations must be thickened first.”

Imset sat at the far edge, his hands folded in his lap, his pace unhurried as always: ”The medicine accounts tonight. Wound medicines and bleeding-cloth — two more shipments on the trade roads. While you are south, I will keep the hall’s accounts as tight as an iron bucket.” He paused, and added, in the same level voice: ”And I will teach Shafi everything a battlefield needs to know. So that what you found here will still be here when you come back.”

”Meru.” Lu Zhu said. ”The trade roads. Do not touch the western line’s road — it is the army’s supply line going south. The eastern fleet’s supplies, continue. And the water road south—” he looked at Meru, ”the rebels hold the three towns. But the river has more roads than the land. Scout it — which stretch of channel can be crossed at night.”

Meru was knocking his pipe out against his boot sole, one dull tap, then another. At the words ”crossed at night,” he looked up, and the charcoal stick spun once between his fingers before he laid it down.

”I’ll send men tonight.” He said. ”For the river’s tricks, you’ve come to the right man. Where the shallows are, where the channels fork — I can draw it for you with my eyes shut. I’ve been drawing it for fifteen years.” He tapped the pipe against his palm. ”Boats are my other trade. The grain road of the south is closed to carts — but a river has never once closed its roads to a man who knows them.”

”Asaf, Tia.” Lu Zhu said. ”The law. The wartime notices stay up; the registrations continue. And the Thebes ledgers you brought out—” he paused, ”transcribe me a copy. Once we’re inside the city, we’ll need it. Every granary, every well, every gate duty recorded in the old registers — that is the map of the city’s guts, and we will need to know where everything lives.”

Asaf and Tia exchanged a glance. Tia said: ”The ledgers’ copy, transcribed tonight. Thebes’s granaries, wells, defenses, craftsmen — the old registers, not one missing. We carried them out of Thebes on our backs; we know every page.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said.

Last, he looked at Kamon. Kamon had said nothing all along; he sat with his stone chisel across his knees, wiping it slowly with the hem of his coat — the old, unhurried motion, the same care he gave to nothing else.

”The men?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Done.” Kamon said. ”I’ve picked thirty from the guild’s craftsmen. Ten stonemasons, ten rammers, five carpenters; the rest — general hands, load bearers, line-readers. All of them veterans who’ve worked both the western line and the new capital. Men who know a wall’s bones the way a doctor knows a man’s.” He said it flatly, the way he said everything about work. ”No boys. No novices. Thebes’s wall will not be repaired by good intentions.”

”The tools?”

”Chisels, hammers, rammers, plumb lines, trowels — not one missing.” Kamon tucked the chisel back into his belt, the blade settling into the worn place in the leather. ”Materials: thirty loads of lime, twenty bundles of chopped straw, fifty sheets of oilcloth — traveling with the army’s baggage. Once we’re there, anything lacking, we find on the spot. Thebes has stone, and stone remembers how to be rebuilt.”

”Three days.” Lu Zhu said. ”Have it ready.”

”Two.” Kamon said.

When the meeting broke, the men left one by one. Mery tucked his notebook into his coat and set off for the granaries, his hand never leaving the pocket where the notebook lay. Imset left with Shafi for the healing hall; at the door he stopped, looked back at Lu Zhu, and said: ”When you enter the city — check first, believe after.” The four words he had written on the ceremony’s drawing, years ago, in the same even hand.

”Noted.” Lu Zhu said.

Shafi followed her teacher, and at the door she too paused. She seemed about to speak; her mouth opened, and then closed again. In the end she only tightened the strap of her medicine chest, the way she always did when she was going to remember something.

”The medicine chest’s accounts,” she said, ”when you leave, I’ll count them out for you. Not one chest short.”

”When you count them,” Lu Zhu said, ”call me. I want to see the numbers myself.”

Meru left last. He knocked his pipe out on the threshold, the ash falling on the stone, and said: ”When I’ve scouted the southern river road, I’ll send word. Need a boat, you’ll have a boat; need men, you’ll have men.” He paused, and added: ”And when you’re truly in Thebes and grain runs short — remember, the West Bank still holds our old stock.”

He meant the West Bank’s village granaries — the first granaries Lu Zhu had ever built, the grain bins that had started everything, the ones the old man at the notice wall had said the wall belonged to everyone. The stock in those bins had fed the western line through its first hard winter.

”I remember.” Lu Zhu said.

When everyone was gone, only Lu Zhu and Kamon remained in the assembly hall.

It was already dark. The oil lamp’s flame jumped once, and steadied; the room settled into the quiet of an empty building, the way the hall always was after a meeting — the bench still warm where Meru had sat, the lamp wick trimmed where Tia had trimmed it. Kamon stood, walked to the defense map on the wall, and studied it for a long time. He stood close to it, his head tilted, the way a man looks at an old drawing he has not seen in years.

”Thebes’s wall,” he said suddenly, ”I repaired it when I was young.”

Lu Zhu looked at him.

”That year, I was still an apprentice learning the trade from my master.” Kamon said. ”A stretch of the south wall had collapsed; the guild took the contract, and we worked three months on it. I remember the feel of that stone — soft, worn, older than the city itself. My master said then: this wall is old; repair one section, and another collapses — it will never be what it was. We were young and did not believe him. Decades have passed.” He paused. ”The wall, I expect, is even worse now.”

”All the better.” Lu Zhu said. ”An old acquaintance — easy to talk to.”

Kamon was startled for a moment; then he understood, and the corners of his mouth turned up. The smile was very short — like a blade whetted once against a stone, bright and gone.

”Right.” Kamon said. ”Where it’s hollow, where it’s solid — I know better than anyone. I laid my hands on every stone of that south stretch when I was nineteen, and a man doesn’t forget the feel of stone he has worked. When the time comes, I’ll take you in through its weakest place.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He walked to the door and looked at the sky. It was full of stars — the same stars that stood over the river road south, over the West Bank, over the old city on the river bend. He stood in the doorway, and the night wind came in past him, smelling of the river.

”This trip,” he said, ”is going home.”

Kamon did not understand. Lu Zhu did not explain. He was only thinking of the West Bank — of the small priest Imhotep’s old identity, the body he had woken in; of the wasteland he had woken to, bare and burned; of the day the first granary rose. That day a child pressed his hand against the wall and said — from now on, no one burns anything. He had been a stranger in this land then, a man with nothing, planning only to gather enough grain and gold to find the road home. The road had grown longer and longer, and home had grown farther and farther, and the things he had built had grown more and more — and somewhere along that road, the idea of home had quietly turned around and followed him.

Now he was heading back in that direction. With hammers, with chisels, with thirty craftsmen, and with the people of a city waiting behind closed gates.

The word ”home” — he weighed it in his mind.

It was heavier than it used to be.

The next morning, Kamon picked his men at the materials yard.

The word had spread the night before. Before the sky was light, nearly two hundred men stood in the yard, their breath smoking in the cold — men of the guild, men of the craftsmen’s village, and men who had heard of the southward campaign and ridden through the night to reach the city. They stood in a loose crowd, tools at their belts, waiting. Kamon stood on a stone block and picked them one by one, the way he had picked crews for twenty years: by the look of the hands, and the way a man stood.

”Stonemasons — step forward.”

A crowd came forward in a rush, the sound of boots on the yard. He counted through them and chose ten — all veterans who had built temples with him, raised walls with him, and squatted through the western line’s work sites with him. He looked at each man’s hands as he named him, and each man held them out, palms up, the callus shining.

”Rammers.”

Another crowd stepped forward. He chose ten; the last was the swarthy man who called the work chants. When he heard his name, the man — who had been standing on tiptoe in the crowd, craning to see over the heads — squared his chest and said: ”Master Kamon! I’ve rammed walls half my life. This time I’ll ram them at the foot of the city wall!”

Kamon did not take up his jollity. He said only: ”Bring your voice. Once we’re there, the work needs a chant — and at night, the passing of orders needs that throat of yours too.” The swarthy man had called the count for the ramming gangs for years; his voice carried over the sound of ten rammers striking together, and it would carry over the sound of arrows.

”Done!” The swarthy man said.

”Carpenters — five.” Kamon went on. ”Line-readers, frame-men — step forward.”

When the picking was done, thirty men stood in three rows in the middle of the yard. Kamon walked down the rows and looked at every pair of hands — all coarse hands, callus stacked on callus at the thumb-web, the skin dark and worn. He moved slowly down the line, and the yard was quiet except for the wind.

”Listen well, all of you.” Kamon said. ”This trip is not to build a temple. It is to take a city back. After the city is taken, the city must be rebuilt — by us. There will be arrows on the wall, and arrows have no eyes. Whoever is afraid, step out now. No one will laugh at you.” He paused, and his voice dropped. ”A man who is afraid in the dark is worth two who pretend not to be.”

In the three rows, no one moved. A few men shifted their weight; no one stepped out.

”Good.” Kamon said. ”Go home and pack your tools properly. In the small hours, we board at the landing.”

And thirty li to the south, at the river bend, the rebels’ great camp had been pitched for four days.

Three thousand cavalry’s tents ran two li along the bend, the rows of canvas standing even as planted rows of grain. A shallow ditch had been dug outside the camp; beyond the ditch stood an abatis of sharpened stakes, their points catching the light. By day the camp slaughtered sheep and cooked, smoke rising in columns; by night, torches blazed and no horse was unsaddled — the horses stood at their lines, saddles on, heads low, ready at any hour. Above the camp gate flew the great banner — the ram’s head sharp-edged against the river wind, the cloth snapping so hard it seemed about to tear.

On the first morning, Panhesy had ridden out with his personal guard to the point from which the new capital could be seen.

He remembered the High Priest’s instruction: do not hurry to break the city; surround it first. But when he actually saw the new capital’s wall, his heart sank a little. He sat his horse on the low rise, and the guard sat their horses behind him, and no one spoke while he looked.

Half a month ago, passing this way with a grain caravan, the wall had been the old sight: the south stretch yellowed, the west stretch peeling in places, piles of untended earth at its foot, the mortar crumbling between the stones. Now the wall was freshly rammed, the plank marks of the forms still on its face, the new earth darker than the old. The wall-head had been raised a foot or more, the crenellations neat and even, lower outside and higher within. Outside the south gate, two ditches ran at a slant, offset from each other, like two black lines laid across the official road.

”This wall,” he murmured, ”how did it grow in a single night?”

Scouts reported: torches burned on the wall-head day and night; the sentry posts were dense, the watchmen close enough to call to one another; the routes by which the common people came and went outside the gate had all been rerouted, so that no crowd could gather at the gate. Further probing: the city’s grain had all been moved into the official granaries; its able-bodied men were all up on the wall. They had even heard, from a fisherman caught below the wall, that the master builder himself had been seen walking the wall-head at night, drawing.

Panhesy sat on his horse for a long time, looking at the wall. Then he wheeled the horse around and rode back to camp, and the guard followed him in silence.

”Surround.” He ordered, when they reached the camp gate. ”Do not attack. Pass it down: every company digs its ditches and raises its stakes. The roads south, east, and west — watch them all dead.”

Two days later, Nekhem reached the camp.

He had brought the banners of Upper Egypt with him — riding north, the banners of more than twenty towns had fallen in behind his own, one after another, until the column carried more colors than an army. Where the mounted column passed, the town gates swung open and the common people knelt at the roadside; the dust of the column lay over the road for hours afterward. Some wept and called out ”High Priest!”; some held their family’s last handful of barley above their heads, offering it. Nekhem’s carriage passed them all without slowing.

Nekhem rode in the carriage all the way without a word. The curtain hung half open; his white robe did not stir in the wind. At the camp, he saw Panhesy first — the general kneeling at the tent’s mouth, his armor still dusty from the road.

”The new capital’s wall — you have seen it?” he asked.

”Seen.” Panhesy said. ”Half a month ago it was old. Now it is rammed hard as iron. Soldiers on the wall-head, ditches outside the city, grain within. To take it by storm would be to pile up lives.” He said it flatly, the way a soldier reports an estimate. ”Not a wall to break; a wall to wait out.”

Nekhem said nothing. He walked to the tent’s mouth and looked north. In that direction — the new capital — the sky at the horizon was gray, showing nothing. He stood there a long moment, his hands clasped behind his back.

”No need for storming.” He said. ”Surround. Surround until they open the gates themselves. Tell the whole army — the new capital’s grain is shipped up from Upper Egypt. Upper Egypt’s grain roads are all in our hands now. They can hold their wall; they cannot hold their bellies.” He turned his head slightly, not enough to look at Panhesy. ”A besieged city eats itself slowly. The walls do not have to fall; the men within will.”

”Yes.” Panhesy said.

Nekhem looked north for a long time. His fingertip kept rubbing the emblem under his sleeve, the worn circle of it, the same motion as always.

”Half a month,” he said. ”I give them half a month. Half a month from now, I want to stand at the new capital’s gate and look at their faces.”

When the camp heard that the High Priest had arrived, morale rose a notch. Around the campfires, men sang the temple’s old tune, the melody running high, out-voicing the sound of the river over the shoals; the voices carried across the water, and the sentries on the far bank heard them. Halfway through, the centurion patrolling the camp cut them off: ”What are you howling for? Think this is a temple festival?” The singing stopped; only the crackle of the firewood remained, and the sound of the river.

And that same night, a rider on a lathered horse burst into the camp from the south.

The rider was caked in dust; night dew lay on his armor, and the horse’s sides were heaving. He rolled off the horse before it had stopped, his reporting voice cracked: ”High Priest! Trouble on the western line! Horenheb is mustering troops! The western line’s soldiers are coming south along the West Bank!”

In the tent, the lamp-wick popped; the flame leaned, and steadied.

Nekhem heard the news and did not answer at once. He turned slowly and walked to the campaign map in the tent — the one Panhesy had brought, drawn from Thebes to the new capital. His fingertip moved from Thebes’s position, slowly across the West Bank, and back to Thebes. The gesture was the same one he had made at the map in his chamber in Thebes, and the weight of it was the same.

”He comes at the right time.” He said.

Everyone in the tent looked at him. The rider’s breath was still ragged; the man in white knelt in the corner, motionless.

”The new capital’s wall is new — this Horenheb cannot break it. Thebes’s wall is old, but behind that wall there is grain, there are soldiers, there is the heart of all Upper Egypt.” He raised his head; his gaze crossed every face in the tent, and stopped on none. ”Send the order to Thebes: full city readiness, bar the gates, advance the curfew. Pamun will hold the city as tight as a jar.” He paused, and his voice sank, degree by degree, until the tent was very quiet. ”As for us—”

He paused again. The lamp flame drew the shadows long on the tent wall.

”Let us first see whether half a line of the western desert’s soldiers dares to cross that river.”

The western line’s edict arrived two days later.

The messenger had changed horses all the way from the new capital; when he reached the western garrison camp and dismounted, his legs could no longer hold him straight. Two soldiers of the gate detail caught him under the arms before he went down. He held the edict high above his head, his throat wheezing like a bellows: ”General Horen! The king’s command! By royal order you are named vanguard of the pacification — take the western line’s soldiers south, and retake Thebes!”

When the order was brought to him, Horenheb was standing on the watchtower at the camp gate.

He came down the tower, taking the ladder rungs slowly, and took the edict, and did not open it at once. He looked west first — west, where the desert ran without end, the sand lying in long, even waves all the way to the horizon. Beyond that sand lay the Libyans’ camp; these days it had been very quiet. Horenheb had been looking at that quiet for weeks, the way a man looks at a sleeping dog. Then he opened the edict and read it once. And read it again, his eyes moving down the sheet a second time, line by line.

”Pass the order.” He said. ”Summon all the forts’ squad leaders. Council.”

His voice was not loud, but from the watchtower to the stables, the whole camp heard it. The order ran from post to post like the smoke signal he had used for years, and within the hour every squad leader on the line was on the road to the camp.

That night, every fort’s squad leader came. More than a dozen men packed the great tent — the old squad leader of Fort Three leaning on his wooden staff, the squad leaders of the seven villages in their worn leather, the young adjutant with the map case. Torches stood outside the tent, lighting the sand bright, and the shadows of the men moved on the tent wall as they sat. Horenheb stood before the campaign map and read the edict’s words aloud, exactly as they were written.

”The king commands a march south.” He said. ”The western line keeps half.”

The tent went still for a moment. Then the old squad leader of Fort Three spoke. He was missing one foot, leaned on his wooden staff, and spoke slowly, the words coming the way they came from a man who has learned not to waste them: ”General, the Libyans are drawing in, it’s true — but a wolf drawing in is a wolf waiting. If everyone goes, the seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages — they’ll be empty. And empty walls are the one thing a wolf understands.”

”Which is why half stays.” Horenheb said. ”Those who stay keep the watch as before. The smoke on the towers — three times a day, not once less. If the Libyans dare move, use the old way — fight from behind the walls.” He looked at the old squad leader. ”You know the old way better than any man living.”

He looked at the old squad leader: ”The western line’s half — I leave it to you and the old adjutant. You have stood this line for thirty years; no one knows better how it must be held.”

The old squad leader stood straight on his staff. His empty trouser leg swayed in the wind that moved through the open tent mouth.

”Rest easy, General.” He said. ”While men live, the wall lives.”

Horenheb nodded. He looked around the tent, at face after face. The squad leader of Jujube Village, whose son had died three years ago — his jaw set, his eyes dry. The squad leader of North Shoal Village, with the old arrow wound in his leg that still troubled him in wet weather. The squad leader of Camel Bell Village, the youngest, standing straight as a spear, his face tight and pale, his hands gripping his spear shaft.

”Those who stay — hold to the joint-defense code.” Horenheb said. ”Between forts, the smoke must not break. Between watch posts, the men must not be missing. If the Libyans see our smoke rising as always, they will not dare move. If they do move, you fight — and when the fight is done, the smoke rises again.” He tapped the map with one finger. ”The smoke is not a signal to us. It is a message to them. As long as it rises, they know the line is awake.”

”Understood.” The squad leaders answered together.

”Those who march — reassemble tonight. All the cavalry; half the infantry. Roll call tomorrow night; set out the morning after, at first light.”

The men in the tent rose. The torchlight threw a dozen shadows against the tent walls — tall, short, standing like a row of walls rising, and the old squad leader was the last to rise, hauling himself up on his staff.

He turned toward the tent’s mouth — Seb stood there, holding an oilcloth bundle; inside the bundle, the drawings he had made, line by line, with his own hand. The boy had grown on the line; his shoulders were broader than they had been when he came, and he stood with the ease of a man who has worked a wall into standing.

”Seb.” Horenheb said. ”You march with me.”

”Yes.” Seb answered. His voice was a little tight, but his hands were steady on the bundle.

”The general map and the code for the sixteen towers of the western line,” he went on, ”— two copies, the handover done. One copy stays at the camp; one stays with the villages. Those who guard will stand by the code.” He spoke the way his teacher had taught him to speak of work: plainly, and to the point.

”Good.” Horenheb said. ”Your towers will have someone to watch them. On this march south, you will look at new drawings — outside Thebes, fortifications must also be built. This time they are not to stop horsemen; they are to lay siege.”

Seb held the oilcloth bundle a little tighter. His eyes caught the torchlight.

”Siege works,” he said, ”I have thought about them.”

”What have you thought?”

”The towers of the western line defend. A siege wall attacks.” Seb said. ”But one principle runs through both — whether defending or attacking, a wall must grow from the ground it stands on, and men must stand where the wall stands. The ground south of Thebes is flat and open; the wall must be built to suit it. That principle I learned on the western line, where the sand taught it to me the hard way.”

Horenheb looked at him for a long time. Then he raised his hand and pressed it down on Seb’s shoulder. A very heavy press, the kind a man gives when he means it to say more than words.

”Your teacher taught you well.” He said. ”When we reach Thebes, I will be waiting to see your drawings.”

The day of departure was set for the third morning.

Before the sky was light, the western garrison stirred. Of those marching south, more than half were horse and man; every saddle carried a sack of dry rations, and the baggage carts stood loaded at the gate. Those staying stood in ranks at the camp gate to see them off — the whole remaining line, the forts’ garrisons drawn down to the camp for the leave-taking. No one wept; no one shouted. The men of the western line did not go in for that. They only stamped the butts of their spears on the ground. Once. Twice. Three times.

When the stamps came together, the sound ran along the ranks like a wave breaking, and it was as if they were saying: go — the home side is ours.

Seb rode a small horse; on its back hung saddlebags — drawings on the left, rations on the right. He looked back once at what lay behind him: sixteen towers standing in a row in the morning mist, like sixteen silent brothers, their watch platforms dark in the half-light. He had raised the first of them with his own hands, and he knew the feel of every one of the others by the line of its silhouette. He watched them for a long moment, then turned and urged the horse forward.

Nefer stood at the camp gate and called after him: ”Seb! When you reach the city, send word back! The women’s squad is thinking of you!”

”Ah!” Seb called back over his shoulder, ”tell the women’s squad to mind the wall at the village gate! When I come back, I’ll be inspecting!” The old joke — the wall at the village gate had been his first job, and the women’s squad had outbuilt him on it.

Nefer laughed and waved at him. The wind blew her sleeve open, showing a length of forearm speckled with lime, the marks of her trade that never washed out.

Horenheb walked at the very head of the column. He did not look back. He knew that the half of the western line he had left behind would hold. It was the surest thing he knew in all his years on the line — the men he had left behind were the men he had taught, and the men he had taught did not fail. He had seen their faces in the torchlight, and he had seen the set of their shoulders, and that was enough.

The route of march came down from the Western Desert, crossed the West Bank, and ran south into Thebes’s territory.

The western line’s soldiers marched fast. Seb rode and watched as he went. The land of the West Bank — he knew it. It was his teacher’s West Bank: the place where the first granary had risen, where the first low wall had been rammed, where a boy from a burned village had learned that earth could be made to stand. The villages along the road carried the marks of their own hands: the crenellations on the low walls were cut to the western line’s measure; the earth forts at the village gates were built in the chain-defense style, so that each village could cover the next. Seeing those walls was like seeing his own past, standing along the road to greet him.

”Teacher started here,” he thought. ”And I grew up here.”

Refugees were already moving north on the West Bank’s official road — families with children, men with shoulder poles, women with babies, the old ones helping the younger along. They were afraid of the marching army at first, and shrank to the roadside, the men putting themselves between the soldiers and their families; when they saw that the banners were not the ram’s banner, they slowly straightened up, and the fear went out of their faces by degrees. Someone called to the column: ”General! Is Thebes still in the rebels’ hands?”

Horenheb looked in the direction of the voice from his saddle. The man who had called was an old farmer, his shoulders bowed under a carrying pole, his eyes fixed on the general with a look that was half hope and half dread.

”It is,” he said. ”That is why we are going.”

The refugees asked nothing more. They stood aside and watched the column pass. The dust thrown up by the horses’ hooves covered them from head to foot, and the children coughed in it — but in their eyes, something had lit up, and the old farmer stood straight for the first time that day.

Lu Zhu’s corps of craftsmen left the new capital in the small hours of the third night.

Thirty-two men, in two flat-bottomed boats. The boats were Meru’s, summoned overnight; their bottoms had been smeared with a fresh coat of river mud, and the men sat low in the hulls, so that only half a gunwale showed above the water. The mud on the bottoms served two purposes: it stopped the timbers from creaking, and it hid the boats’ shape against the bank. Before departure, Meru drew the two boatmen aside and repeated one instruction over and over, his voice low and level: ”By day, hug the shore; by night, sail. On the river stretches past the three towns, wrap the oars in cloth; no lamp at the bow; no one coughs.”

The boatmen were young, sparing of words; their nods were brisk. They had been chosen by Meru himself, and they had been told what the boats carried, and they had not flinched.

Leaving the city, the south gate opened only half. The soldiers on the wall held torches down over the decks — over the cargo: lime, chopped straw, oilcloth, bundles stacked in neat rows, tied down with ropes. This was freight for the ”southern goods depot,” and the manifest said so in ink. Under the freight, in the hulls, lay hammers, chisels, plumb lines — and thirty craftsmen, holding their breath in the dark, their hands on their tools.

The boats pulled away; the lights of the new capital sank lower, one by one, behind them. The city that had been a building site, then a home, lay quiet on its bank, its lamps going out one by one as the boats ran south.

Lu Zhu sat at the stern and did not sleep. He watched that field of lights — the walls he had repaired, the granaries he had raised, the altar-light he had brought out of the temple he had designed — shrink into a single bright line in the dark, and then go out. He had watched the same lights go out behind him on other nights, on other roads, and each time the going had been a little harder.

”Teacher,” one boatman said, low, ”it’s the small hours. Close your eyes a while.”

”You sail your boat.” Lu Zhu said.

He leaned against a bundle of chopped straw and watched the reeds of both banks slide back, black and indistinct. The water sounds were soft, soft enough to hear the hull grate over a sandbank; the river itself was the only road in Egypt that had no gates. They hugged the west bank; on the east bank’s official road lay the rebels’ world, and once or twice a distant torch moved along it.

The water past the first two towns went smoothly enough. The lamps onshore were sparse, most of them already out; once or twice a dog barked, and the water soon covered it. The stretch past the third town was the most dangerous — the town’s gate came down to the river, a boom was strung across its water gate, a sentry tower stood onshore, and its torch burned all night without fail, a red eye in the dark.

On that stretch, both boats shipped their oars and crept forward on poles pushed against the riverbed, inch by inch. The boatmen moved without a sound, each pole dipping and lifting as if it had practiced this stretch a hundred times — and it had, in Meru’s mind, on paper, in the dark of a warehouse where he had made them rehearse the motions without water. The hull scraped along the boom’s timber — a long, low groan, so faint that it was less like wood than like a fingernail drawn across rough cloth.

Everyone on both boats held their breath. The men in the hulls stopped breathing; the boatmen’s poles hung suspended; even the water seemed to pause.

Past the water gate, the boats ran half a li more before the boatman dared breathe. He wiped his brow and looked back at Lu Zhu. Lu Zhu still leaned against the straw, eyes open, watching the stars.

”Master Builder,” the boatman’s voice still trembled, ”that scrape just now—”

”I know.” Lu Zhu said. ”We’re past it.” He said it the way he said everything about finished work: flat, final, moving on.

The boats ran the rest of the night. As the sky was lightening they put in at the bank — a stretch of reed beds, not a soul in sight, the reeds standing tall enough to hide a boat at ten paces. The craftsmen jumped ashore and carried the freight up, piece by piece, in the gray light. Some crouched, rubbing legs gone numb from sitting; some let out the coughs they had held all night, coughing until tears ran, their hands over their mouths to muffle the sound.

Kamon was the last off the boat. He stood on the bank and looked south. At the southern horizon lay a faint black line — the direction of Thebes. He had not seen that skyline in decades, and he looked at it the way a man looks at a place he has unfinished business with.

”We’re here,” he said.

”We’re here.” Lu Zhu said.

That evening, Lu Zhu and Horenheb met at the riverside.

The two men stood on the bank, looking at the reed beds on the far shore. The sunset beyond them burned red — red shading to black, like iron heated past its temper. The river ran between them and the city, wide and slow, carrying the light broken on its surface.

”The new capital — everything in order?” Horenheb asked.

”In order.” Lu Zhu said. ”Walls, grain, medicine, roads — not one slackened. Mery holds the grain accounts, Imset the medicine, Meru the roads, Asaf and Tia the law. The city will hold without me.”

”Good.” Horenheb said. ”Thebes, inside — do you have a clear picture?”

”I do.” Lu Zhu said. ”Our people who came out from the West Bank — the cargo boats running south have been cut for half a month. What we know of the city comes from people who escaped it. The gates shut. The granaries sealed. The wells managed. The craftsmen conscripted into the city-defense corps.” He recited it the way a man recites a list he has gone over many times. ”And the chief officiant confined in the old temple’s back courtyard — the one man in the city the rebels did not know what to do with.”

”And the wall?”

”An old wall.” Lu Zhu said. ”Kamon repaired it when he was young. A stretch of the south wall collapsed once — decades ago. In these years, with the old pharaoh neglecting government, no one has tended the defenses. The wall’s account will have to be tallied section by section once we’re inside.” He paused. ”But an old wall has old cracks, and old cracks are doors, for men who know where to look.”

Horenheb said nothing. He looked toward Thebes for a long time. In the dusk, nothing could be seen on that horizon — but he knew the city was there, gates shut, the ram’s banner stirring in the wind above the wall, the same wind that moved the reeds at his feet.

”The edict says,” he said, ”that when Thebes is retaken, you enter and rush-repair its defenses.”

”Yes.”

”Then let us divide the work.” Horenheb said. ”The city, my men will take. Once it is taken — how it is rebuilt and held is yours. My cavalry camps outside, surrounds the city, and cuts off the rebels’ retreat.”

He paused, and added: ”But taking a city is not storming it. However old Thebes’s wall is, a granary of thirty thousand people is still a granary. Storm it, and the city is broken and the men are spent. So—”

”So,” Lu Zhu took over, ”someone must enter first.”

The two men looked at each other. In the dusk neither spoke again. The wind came off the river and pressed the grass of the bank flat, stretch by stretch, and the river carried the last of the light away downstream.

”Who enters first,” Horenheb said, ”you and I will choose.”

”I will.” Lu Zhu said. ”I take the craftsmen in. Inside the city, we have people.”

”Who?”

”The chief officiant.” Lu Zhu said. ”He is confined in the old temple’s back courtyard. And the people of Thebes — the craftsmen who were conscripted into the defense corps against their will. They are holding spears they do not want, on walls they know how to repair. What they lack is one sentence from outside the walls.”

Horenheb looked at him, and slowly nodded.

”Three days.” He said. ”My men will swing around to the north of the city in three days. When the signal rises inside the city, the cavalry charges the gate.”

”What signal?”

”Torch.” Horenheb said. ”Three swings. The same principle as the western line’s smoke.” He held up his hand and moved it through the air, once, twice, three times, the gesture of a man who had used the code for years. ”Three swings of light, seen from across the water. Then we come.”

”Three swings.” Lu Zhu repeated.

When the sky had gone fully dark, the two men still stood at the riverside. Across the water, Thebes showed not a single light — the city that had once been the brightest river port in Egypt lay black against the sky. But just as they turned to leave, a sound came from the direction of the city’s south.

”Boom—”

Deep. Dull. It crossed the night, crossed the river, and reached them here, carrying through the reeds.

It was the sound of a gate closing.

Then a second: ”Boom—”

Then a third.

South gate, east gate, west gate — one after another, they shut. The north gate was the soldiers’ gate; it had been barred since nightfall. The sounds came across the water one after another, each one heavier than the last, as if the city were sealing itself against them.

Last came the sound of the bar dropping — a click, long and blunt, like a piece of rotten timber settling, slowly, on the heart of every man who heard it. The sound hung in the air over the water for a long moment before the wind took it.

Lu Zhu stood at the riverside and did not move. He could hear, in that sound, iron, and wood, and men.

”Shut.” He said.

”Shut.” Horenheb said.

The night wind came off the river, cold enough to make a man shiver. In the blackness across the water, only the torches of the wall-head still burned, one after another — like a row of eyes refusing to close, watching the river.

”Wait until we get in.” Lu Zhu said. ”That gate will open again.”

He turned and walked toward the camp. After a few steps he stopped, and looked back once.

In the night, Thebes’s outline lay sunk on the far bank, a heavy black mass against the stars. The torches on its wall joined into one line — like a burning rope, bound tight around the whole city. He looked at the line of fire for a moment, and then he turned again and walked on.

And in the great camp at the river bend, Nekhem wrote an answering order and handed it to the messenger riding south that night.

The order was four sentences long: bar the gates; advance the curfew; add guards at the granaries; double the water-gate watch. He wrote it in his own hand, the characters even and unhurried, and dried the ink himself.

The messenger swung onto his horse and vanished into the night. The hoofbeats ran south, farther and farther, and at last melted into the river wind.

Nekhem stood at the tent’s mouth and looked south for a long time. The night was very still around him; the camp slept with its sentries, and the river moved past in the dark.

”They want Thebes,” he said, low. ”Then let them come and take it.”

In the lamplight, the ram’s-head emblem between his fingers had been rubbed until it gleamed, faintly — the same emblem, the same motion, the same patience that had waited out priests and pharaohs.
