Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 85: Chapter 7: Grain Run Through Fire — The Caravan Crosses the Battle Lines

Two ledgers lay open on the stone table in the back courtyard of the official granary.

One was Mery’s grain account. The number at the end of it, he had worked out again the night before, by the lamp, his finger moving down the columns twice: at the present rate of eating, the city’s grain would fall a month short of the summer harvest. Which meant — if the grain from outside could not get in, before the summer came, the whole city would be counting grains of rice to get through each day, and the counting would be the city’s main meal.

The other was Shafi’s medicine account. Wound medicines: eight days left. Bleeding-cloth: five. The fire arrows burned the wall-head every night, and the new wounded mounted day by day; the numbers at the ends of her columns were smaller than any she had ever written in the new capital. At this rate of consumption, within ten days, the hospital’s shelves would hold nothing but boiled old bandage strips.

Under the lamp, no one spoke.

The lamp was the back courtyard’s oil lamp; it had lived through most of the siege, and the glass was smoke-dark. The wick had flowered; Mery reached over and trimmed it with his fingers, and the flame straightened up again, throwing the shadows of the room’s people long and short across the walls.

”The wall’s account, I report.” Kamon spoke first. He had been on the wall day after day, night after night, and his voice carried the taste of earth; the dust of the ramming lay in the creases of his face, and his hands were cracked from the lime. ”The middle of the north wall and the southeast corner — newly patched, rammed solid, the joins bitten together, the way we learned in the new capital. But the old wall’s foundations are what they are — old stone and older earth, and if the rebels bring a battering ram, it won’t hold many rounds before the old stone gives. The patching materials: lime is nearly gone; chopped straw remains; mud-brick can be made at any time, the earth is good and the molds are ready. What’s missing is lime.”

”The hospital’s account, I report.” Imset’s voice was as level as ever, the voice of a man who had learned to carry bad news without bending under it. ”The wounded: seventy-three at present. Nineteen critical. New wounded each day — at least three, at most seven, and the fire arrows have made the burns the worst of them; the burns weep and take the longest to close. The medicine shortfall is counted in Shafi’s register, to the last packet — she counts them every night, and the counting keeps her honest. And one thing more — the wounded eat more than ordinary people, they need the strength to grow flesh and the warmth to fight the fevers. On the grain account, the hospital’s rations need an extra tenth set aside.”

”The water account, I report.” The chief officiant said. ”The three new wells and the old well of the back courtyard — enough for drinking, and the water is clear; the courtyard well has not dropped a hand’s breadth since the siege began. But the well ropes: two snap every three days, worn through at the same place where the rope bends over the rim, where the stone has a sharp edge. The city’s hemp has all been twisted into rope, and the rope-makers have nothing left to spin; from now on, the ropes have to come from the supplies brought in.”

Lu Zhu listened, and wrote the four accounts, entry by entry, in the margin of the city’s defense map. The charcoal moved steadily, the figures going down in his small even hand. When he was done, he looked up at the lamp. The flame jumped in the wind from the door, throwing the shadows of the room’s people long and short.

”Grain — short by a month’s worth.” He said. ”Medicine — only days of reserve left. Materials — lime nearly gone. Ropes — must be replenished. But all of these lie on the far side of the river.” He paused, and his voice was level: ”The far side of the river is not a wall. It is a road — if we can find the way to walk it. And a road is found by walking, not by waiting.”

”On the far side of the river,” Mery said, ”Meru is waiting. And Meru has never once waited in vain.”

”Can’t we wait for the royal river fleet?” The adjutant asked. ”The fleet of the east — where is it now?”

”At the new capital.” Lu Zhu said. ”The fleet is guarding the royal city, and the pharaoh will not part with it while the rebellion stands. And aside from whether it could arrive in time — dozens of great ships coming south, the rebels’ river soldiers would see them from ten li away, and the water would turn to open war. The fighting would arrive before the ships.”

”The official road?” Kamon asked.

”The official road gives us twenty cartloads every five days — bought with men’s lives.” Lu Zhu said. ”General Horen’s letter says it plainly — the roving riders grow more numerous by the day; the escort soldiers grow wearier by the day, and the tired ones make mistakes. That road cannot hold much longer. It is a road being worn away under our feet.”

”So only the river remains.” Mery said. ”The river has no roads. But Merchant Meru says: where there are no roads, that is exactly where a boat can go.”

”It has to be carried.” Lu Zhu said. ”By water. The official road is watched to death by the rebels’ riders — three days a run, five days a run, it’s about to break, and every run costs blood we cannot spare. Only on the river is there still a seam — the rebels’ boats are few and their eyes are set on the main channel. The place others cannot pass — that is our road. A road is not a thing that exists; it is a thing that is made, by the first man who walks it.”

”Meru has arrived.” Mery said. ”With his caravan — men and boats, all at the West Bank. Of the three water routes, he has mapped two. He says he is waiting for our word.”

”Answer him.” Lu Zhu said. ”Tell him the city needs three things — grain, medicine, materials. Whatever he can carry, we will receive.”

”The unloading place has to be fixed first.” Mery said. ”The goods come in through the west gate — they can’t be stacked at the landing. Stacked at the landing, one night of rain would ruin them all, and a night of rain is a small thing compared to a night of the rebels’ eyes.”

”So—” Lu Zhu picked up his charcoal and marked a place on the defense map, pressing the point down. ”Tomorrow, we rebuild the transfer depot.”

And that same night, on the West Bank, in the camp across the river, Meru was staring at his boats.

Meru had arrived three days ago. On this journey, from the new capital to the West Bank, he had traveled more slowly than anyone — not slow of leg, but slow of eye. At every stretch of river he stopped to look: where the water ran deep, where it ran shallow, where the reed beds lay, which side channels could hide a boat, which bends the current had carved new. As he looked, he added lines to the river map in his breast, the charcoal moving in the little marks of his trade. By the time he reached the West Bank, the map was covered thick with marks, like a road map of a country that existed only under the water.

”Merchant Meru,” Horenheb came to see him. ”Are the boats all here?”

”All here.” Meru knocked his pipe out on the edge of a stone, one dull tap, then another — the sound carrying across the dock. ”Six boats. Three for grain, two for medicine, one for materials — lime, chopped straw, oilcloth. Plus two small boats, empty.” He paused, and looked at the boats as he said it, as if counting them again. ”Six boats and two decoys. The river has room for all of them — if we read it right.”

The loading had begun the night before last.

The granary hands of the West Bank village granaries carried the grain sacks out, one by one, the sacks passing from shoulder to shoulder in a line that ran from the granary door to the dock. Meru squatted at the dock and looked at every sack: whether the mouth was tied tight, whether the cloth was damp, whether the corners had worm holes, whether the stitching would hold a night of jolting — his hands moving over each sack as if reading it. Looked at a sack, nodded, and only then was the sack allowed onto the boat; a sack that failed his look went back to the granary without a word. A young granary hand, carrying in a hurry, dropped a sack onto the deck with a thud — and Meru’s brows went up, and his voice came out sharp:

”Gently! This grain will be jolted all the way down the river, and once it’s in the city, it is the lives of the whole city. If your throw splits the sack and spills the grain, whose loss is that? Not mine — I count the sacks on the boat. It will be the city’s, and the city counts every grain.”

”Mine, mine.” The young hand went red, his ears burning. ”Merchant Meru, this is my first time loading this kind of boat; my heart is drumming too.”

”Drumming is good.” Meru said. ”Drumming means you know how precious it is. A man who carries grain like firewood will one day carry a fire.”

The medicine chests were loaded by Shafi’s rules — she was not at the West Bank, but her rules were, written out on a sheet and carried by the courier, the paper worn at the folds from being read and folded and read again. The rules ran: the medicine chests at the bottom, the bleeding-cloth in the middle, the splints strapped to the inside of the lids, and the spaces between the chests packed full of dry straw, so that no chest could shift and no jolt could reach the pots. The rules ended with a line in Shafi’s hand: ”The chests are numbered one to twelve. Count them twice before you leave the dock.” Meru went through the list, item by item, his finger on the paper, checking each chest against its number, opening the lids to look and closing them again. When he reached the last chest, he took a square of oilcloth from his breast and covered the top of it with his own hands, tucking the edges under the rope.

”This medicine,” he said to the loading hands, who had stopped to watch, ”is harder to move than gold. Gold sunk can be dug up again; medicine sunk — there is nothing left. A boat can be rebuilt; a packet of medicine cannot be re-made between here and the city.”

The materials boat was the easiest. The lime was stacked flat in its bundles, the chopped straw pressed down tight, the oilcloth rolled into cylinders and wedged into the gunwale seams, the rolls fitted so that not one could shift in a night of water. Meru walked three circles around the boat, his eyes moving over every tie and every corner, his hand testing each knot — and then he suddenly had two bundles of lime moved toward the bow, the men lifting and shifting them under his direction.

”The bow was light — draft too shallow, and it would scrape bottom over the sandbars.” He said. ”Weigh it down; it’s steadier. A boat that rides shallow on a dark river is a boat that announces itself.”

On the day the boats were loaded, Meru stood at the dock and looked the six boats over from bow to stern, and then back again. The sunset threw their shadows on the river, long and short — like a line of soldiers waiting to march, patient in the evening light.

”The empty boats — what are they for?” Horenheb asked.

”Bait.” Meru said. ”The river soldiers’ boats are large, and at night they lie in the main channel, where the water is deep enough to hold them. A large boat cannot enter the side channels, cannot enter the reeds, cannot turn in the narrow bends. Our boats are small — they go wherever it’s narrow, wherever the water is thin. If we truly collide with them, the empty boats light their torches and dash outward, drawing their boats away, while the loaded boats slip past the edge, hugging the shadow. One boat of empty holds in exchange for five boats of lives. The trade is a fair one.”

Horenheb looked at him for a while, and said: ”You know war better than I do.”

”The general jests.” Meru said. ”I do business. A businessman’s first rule is to stay alive; the second is to profit. Now I deliver goods to the city — I earn no silver; I earn lives. Lives are worth more than silver, so I have to count even more carefully. In silver, an error costs a coin; in lives, an error costs a man.”

He paused, and the pipe turned once between his fingers: ”General, could your men lend a hand? They needn’t go into the water. Tomorrow night, on the works south of the city, make some noise for the rebels — drums, torches, the sound of an army shifting. When the river soldiers look up at the fire line, they’ll forget the river.”

”Done.” Horenheb said. ”Tomorrow night, drums in the south, torches blazing on the archery towers, and my riders moving along the works as if a sortie were being prepared. I’ll pin their eyes to the south.”

”And one thing more.” Horenheb said. ”Tomorrow night at the Zi hour, I’ll post twenty archers hidden in the willow grove on the west bank. When your boats touch the shore, they cover you with arrows. If there’s real pursuit, there are arrows on the bank, and the pursuit will think twice before it follows a boat into a shore of arrows.”

”Your men are precious.” Meru said.

”An archer’s life and a boatman’s life are equally precious.” Horenheb said. ”What you carry for me is half the city’s food. These twenty bows of mine are owed — and a debt of the western line is always paid.”

Meru did not refuse again. He clasped his hands and bowed to Horenheb — men of trade did not practice such courtesy, and the merchants of the guilds bowed only to contracts and scales. But this once, he bowed with more weight than he had ever bowed before, and the bow was slow.

”Thank you, General.” Meru said. ”You pin their eyes to the south; I’ll row my boats into the city’s west.”

The answer came the next night.

A-Tu’s small boat slid along the bank and into the side channel, moving like a shadow that had learned the water by heart. He drew an oilcloth packet from his breast and handed it to Meru: ”The master builder’s words. He says the city needs three things — grain, medicine, materials. Whatever you can carry, they will receive. The unloading place is fixed at the beach west of the west gate — the city has already laid stone slabs there, and the gate will open for you at the hour you name.”

”Three things.” Meru repeated, and opened the packet. Inside was half a sheet of sheepskin, drawn with the beach outside the west gate, several points marked on it — the deep water, the shallow, the place where a boat could lie hidden against the bank. At the very bottom of the drawing, in Lu Zhu’s hand, five characters: ”After the Zi hour, the river is emptiest.”

”He gives me five characters.” Meru laughed, holding the sheepskin up to the lantern light. ”But those five characters are worth half a city. A man who knows the hour knows half the road — and the other half, the river will tell him when he gets there.”

”Merchant,” A-Ping squatted beside him, asking the question he had held for half a month, ”the roads in this river — how did you feel them out?”

”With my feet.” Meru said. He narrowed his eyes, as if looking back down the years and the water. ”The first time, I took you with me, in a small boat, disguised as fishermen — the nets over the side, the hats low. By day we watched the shoals; by night we listened to the water. Which stretch rang, which stretch was still, which reed beds ran deep, which channels could take a boat, where the current had cut a new bend after the floods — one by one, noted on the map. Once we ran into the river soldiers’ boats; we cast the net into the water and crouched at the bow, pretending to haul it in, the rope running through our hands as if we had been there all morning. The soldier even asked us — plenty of fish?”

”I said, plenty.” A-Ping grinned. ”So many the net couldn’t hold them.”

”Right. Plenty.” Meru said. ”Under this river, there are more roads than fish. The fish swim in the water; the roads are the water.”

All those roads were drawn on his river map now — every mark a night spent on the water, every line a lesson the river had taught. Meru spread the map on the deck and, by the light of the lantern, looked it over once more, his fingertip moving along the marked lines — the channels he had probed, the depths he had sounded, the bends he had memorized. When he had looked his fill, he raised his head to the sky: ”Tomorrow night, there will be fog.”

”How do you know?” A-Ping asked.

”The clouds to the north are pressing down, low and even, and the river is giving off a smell of water — the smell it gives when the air above it is about to turn to mist.” Meru said. ”On such a night, the fog will rise in the small hours, thick enough to blur a torch at ten boat-lengths. Fog — that is heaven’s lamp for us. Heaven knows a merchant’s boat needs a lamp it cannot be seen by.”

That night, Meru slept little. He lay in the hold, listening to the river slap the hull, again and again, like a hand tapping on the wood, as if it were speaking to him.

He remembered, many years ago, his first grain run from Nubia to the West Bank. That year he was nineteen, leading three donkeys loaded with half a cart of grain, seven days and seven nights on the road, the dust of Nubia in his clothes. Wolves came at him on the way, their eyes green in the dark; he flung half a sack of grain behind him, the wolves stopped to eat the grain, and he kept his life, running until his lungs burned. Even then he had understood a principle: goods are dead; roads are alive; and a life grows on the road — a man who knows the road can always buy his life back with a little of his goods.

Later the roads grew wider, and the goods grew more numerous; he became ”Merchant Meru,” with a caravan guild and a fleet of boats, and men who called him Merchant and meant it. But the nineteen-year-old inside him had never gone far — that boy asked him, in the nights, in the quiet of the holds: Meru, do you still dare — to trade a life for a road?

”I dare.” He said to the deck above him. ”I dared before; I dare more now. The boy who ran from wolves is the man who rows into the dark.”

The water outside the hull went on, beat by beat, as if answering him.

”Wait,” he said, low. ”Tomorrow night, it’s your turn. The river and I have an account to settle — and I have never once failed to collect.”

Inside the city, the transfer depot was begun the next day.

The place chosen was at the west end of the Old Market Square — three old goods sheds standing side by side, their roofs sagging. The sheds had sheltered caravans in the old years; the timber posts were still sound, only the roofs leaked, and the rain had stained the walls with long dark streaks. When Meru had first come from Nubia trading to Thebes, the first time he entered the city, his goods had been unloaded in these very sheds — the first roof of his that was not a tent. Then the sheds were new, and Meru was young; he set up his stall at the shed door and haggled with the shopkeepers of every house, until his voice went hoarse and he bought a bowl of cold water to wet it, and the water had tasted like the whole city.

”These sheds,” Lu Zhu said to Mery, ”when Meru comes, let him look at them. He’ll know them. A man remembers the first roof he traded under the way he remembers his own name.”

”What he’ll know,” Mery said, ”is probably the rain stains on the roof.”

”Then we change the roof.” Lu Zhu said. ”He built his start here, and now he risks his life for here. These sheds have to be kept for him — kept whole, the way a man keeps the house he first made money in. A house that remembers a man should stand straight when he comes back to it.”

Lu Zhu’s people re-thatched the roofs — three layers of reed matting, a row of mud-bricks pressed down to hold them, oilcloth over all, the edges weighted so the wind could not lift them.

While the roofing was going on, they found that the beam of the middle shed had been hollowed out by white ants. A carpenter climbed up and knocked on the wood — it answered with a soft, hollow ”puff, puff,” like knocking on an empty tube, and a fine dust of eaten wood sifted down.

”Replace it.” Kamon said. ”A beam is a roof’s backbone. If the backbone is hollow, any number of matting layers is wasted — the roof is only as strong as the bone under it.”

They searched the material yard and found nothing suitable — every beam was spoken for, every length of timber already promised to the wall. In the end, Old Montu led his men to the abandoned houses north of the city and brought back two old roof beams, carrying them on their shoulders through the lanes. The beams were dry, with few worm holes, the wood gone dark with years. The carpenters planed them, drove in the wedges, and raised them into place — fitting so tight that the joints vanished, and the new beams stood as if they had grown there.

”An old house’s beams,” Old Montu said, patting the timber, ”serving a new depot’s roof. The old things of this city are still alive — they just change their work.”

Half of the two dividing walls between the sheds was knocked down, leaving doorways: the goods came in through the west door and out through the east — one flow line, no turning back, the way water runs in one direction through a channel.

”Receiving goes through the west; issuing through the east.” Lu Zhu said to Mery. ”The grain, medicine, and materials that come in, stacked in three sections. Grain against the north wall; medicine against the south wall — the south wall is dry, the sun warms it; materials in the middle. Leave a lane down the center, two spans wide — a man can pass; a cart cannot.”

”The accounts?” Mery asked.

”Three ledgers.” Lu Zhu said. ”One for receiving, one for issuing, one for the balance. You keep the balance — the number that tells the truth about the whole depot. Every day’s in and out, checked against the ledgers. This transfer depot is the city’s second river — goods are the water; it must flow, not clog. A river that clogs becomes a swamp, and a swamp breeds fever.”

The conversion took most of the day. By evening, the three sheds had changed: the floor raised half a foot with dry earth, lime sprinkled over it, the earth packed firm; six vents opened in the walls, angled so the air moved through but the rain could not enter; all the doors replaced, with two crossbars each, the hinges oiled. At the shed door, a wooden board was nailed, bearing three characters:

The Transfer Depot.

The people of the city did not know what the three characters meant. But at night, they saw the lamp lit inside the sheds, and the light falling through the vents in long stripes across the ground, the stripes moving as the lamp swayed. Under the lamp, men were stacking empty grain sacks, one by one, as if waiting for something — the sacks laid flat, ready to be filled, the stacks rising neat and even in the lamplight.

”Waiting for the boats.” Mery said to the children who came to watch, their faces pressed to the door frame. ”When the boats come, this lamp will burn brighter, and the sacks will stand up full.”

That night, many people in the city did not sleep.

The chief officiant’s night patrol, walking the west gate, lingered a little longer than usual, the lamps moving slowly along the wall. Inside the west gate, the old woman who sold dates kept her door open a crack, sitting behind it, stitching a shoe sole, needle by needle, the thread pulling through with a small sound. Someone asked her why she did not sleep. She said: ”I can’t sleep. I keep feeling that tonight, something ought to happen. My bones have been telling me so all evening.”

In the hospital, Shafi stood the night watch. She counted the medicine racks a third time, her finger touching each packet, the count coming out even — and then she walked to the door and looked west. The west was black and heavy; only the wind, moving the reeds somewhere beyond the wall, and the far mutter of the river. But she kept feeling that the wind carried the sound of oars cutting water — the soft, patient sound of a boat coming home — and the feeling would not let her sleep.

On the wall, the soldiers of the night watch felt it too. Something seemed to be moving on the river — a shadow among shadows, a stir where the water should be still. But when they listened hard, there was only the water.

”This water sound,” an old soldier said, ”is especially soft tonight. Soft as if it didn’t want to be heard.”

He said it, and hugged his spear a little tighter. The river wind rocked the torch, and the light showed the wrinkles on his face — line upon line, like the walls of this city, each one a year of watching.

On the third night, at the Zi hour.

The evening before the departure, Old Camel found Meru; the two squatted at the mouth of the side channel, sharing half a barley cake each, breaking the pieces carefully so that no crumb fell into the mud.

”Merchant,” Old Camel said, ”I’ve followed you for fifteen years — from the camel trains of Nubia to this river. This trip, for the first time, my heart is unsteady.”

”Unsteady about what?” Meru asked.

”All the goods I’ve carried before — if we lost them, we lost money, and money can be earned again. This trip, if we lose them...” He did not finish. The sentence hung in the air between them, and both men knew the shape of what it would have been.

”This trip, we won’t lose them.” Meru said. ”Goods are dead; roads are alive; and men are alive too. Remember the old saying of our trade — first watch the sky, then the water, then the goods. When heaven helps a man and the water helps a man, the goods will earn. When the sky is against you, stay at the dock — the dock is also a road.”

”And today’s sky?” Old Camel looked up. Thin clouds had gathered, sliding over the stars; the moon had not yet risen.

”There will be fog.” Meru said. ”Fog is heaven’s gift to us. Tonight heaven is on the side of the road.”

Old Camel swallowed the last bite of his cake, stood up, and brushed the dust from his trousers, the motion slow and deliberate: ”Then this trip, I’ll follow you to the end.”

”To the end.” Meru said. ”When we come back, I’ll buy you the date wine of the West Bank — the good kind, from the press at the old landing.”

Old Camel grinned, showing his teeth, the grin of fifteen years of partnership: ”Then you’d better remember. I’ve kept accounts for fifteen years; the thing I keep best is who owes me wine.”

No moon. A thin fog rose over the river, creeping along the surface of the water like breath, blurring the distant lights into drifting halos. The world beyond the banks had gone soft and white, and the river had become a road of its own.

And before the fleet set out — half a double-hour before the Zi hour — the two bait boats came out of the side channel first.

There were only four men on them. On the lead boat: Shunzi and Old Wu — Shunzi was the youngest hand in the caravan, sixteen, keeper of the horse-lamp, his face still smooth as a boy’s; Old Wu had been with the camel trains, loud of voice and bold of heart, the kind of man who laughed at a bad road. On the boat behind: two West Bank boatmen, one surnamed Meng, the other nameless, known to all as Blackie, his skin dark from a lifetime of river sun.

The two boats were loaded with bran and coarse hemp cloth, covered with oilcloth, bulging — in the dark, they looked exactly like boats full of goods, and that was the whole point of them.

”Shunzi,” Old Wu poled the boat to the edge of the main channel and said, low, ”afraid?”

”Afraid.” Shunzi said. His hand was on the fire-starter, trembling, again and again; the trembling had started when the boats left the channel and had not stopped, and the trembling was honest — the honesty of a boy who had never before carried a torch into the dark on purpose.

”Afraid is right.” Old Wu said. ”A man who isn’t afraid on a night like this is a fool, and fools die young on this river — I’ve buried two of them myself. In a little while I’ll light the torch, and you crouch low. When the arrows come, jump into the water. The water will hold you — steadier than any boat. Don’t look back at the fire. Fire is a thing to leave behind.”

”If... if my father knew I was doing this, he’d break my legs.”

”If your father knew you were carrying grain for the whole city,” Old Wu said, ”he’d put up a shrine tablet for you, and the whole street would burn incense to it.”

Shunzi said no more. He swallowed hard, and gripped the fire-starter tight, the trembling easing a little as the words went in.

Half a double-hour later, Meru’s fleet moved. Another two quarters of an hour passed, and on the river downstream, three torches flared.

Three torches — three lives. They deliberately turned the boats broadside, letting the torchlight spread across half the river, a bold silhouette against the water, and then, unhurriedly, rowed toward the north bank. The boats moved with the casual confidence of smugglers who did not know they were being watched — which was exactly what the watchers were meant to see.

The river soldiers’ two torch boats chased almost at once. The flag at the bow waved, and the arrows came first, hissing over the water.

”They’re coming!” Old Wu growled low. ”Jump!”

Four figures hit the water almost at the same moment, going over the sides in the practiced motion of men who had rehearsed it in their heads a hundred times. The instant they were in, the fire arrows arrived. The oil-soaked arrows struck the cargo boats; the oilcloth caught at once, the flame running over the bulging covers; the bran caught, and the boats burned into two masses of flame drifting on the water, lighting the river for a hundred boat-lengths.

When the river soldiers arrived, only ash was left on the boats. The centurion in command stood at the bow and swept the water with his torch, again and again — the light showing only water, dark and empty, closing over the traces. He swept it three times, and found nothing.

”After them!” He said, and his voice was sharp with the anger of a man who knows he has been played. ”Watch the north bank!”

And four li downstream, Shunzi and Old Wu were surfacing in a stretch of reed beds, the reeds closing over their heads. Old Wu had an arrow in his arm — it had come in the second volley, and the blood had stained a patch of the river red around him. Gritting his teeth, he snapped the shaft off short, the motion quick and practiced, and said: ”Swim. Swim north. Merchant Meru’s boats should be crossing mid-river by now.”

The four men swam north through the water, bit by bit, the strokes slow and even to save strength. The river was icy — the cold of the deep night water — cold enough to set their teeth chattering, the chattering echoing off the water. Shunzi, swimming, looked back once — the two masses of flame still drifted on the river, like two lamps lit for the dead, and the sight of them caught in his throat.

”Our boats,” he said, his voice thick with tears, ”burned.”

”Burned.” Old Wu said, his breath coming hard. ”But our lives bought the passage for six boats. Worth it — and worth it again, if it had to be paid twice.”

The four men reached the north bank as the sky was turning gray, their hands finding the mud, their legs dragging with the cold, the water running off them in streams.

Old Wu’s arm was still bleeding — the arrow had gone deep, and the bound strip was dark with blood; Shunzi tore a strip from his own coat with his teeth and bound it over the first, the knot pulled tight with shaking fingers. The four lay on the beach for a little while, flat on their backs, like four fish thrown up by the waves, their chests heaving, the cold settling into their bones. Then they got up, looked at one another — and all of them laughed, the laughter thin and shaky, but real, the laughter of men who had been dead and found themselves alive.

”The boats are gone.” Shunzi said.

”Boats will come again.” Old Wu said. ”Merchant Meru said it — what this trip burned, the next trip earns back. The river keeps accounts too, and it pays its debts.”

They limped north. In the morning mist, the direction of the West Bank, cook-smoke was already rising, thin columns standing in the still air. Old Wu looked back at the river once — the two masses of flame were long out; only two black wrecks drifted slowly downstream with the current, turning as the water took them.

”Come on.” Old Wu said. ”Back to camp to wait for word. When Merchant Meru comes back, we’ll be first in the honors — and first in line for the date wine.”

Meru’s fleet came out of the least conspicuous side channel on the West Bank.

Six boats in a line, oars wrapped in cloth, no lamps at the bows — the boats black against the black water, visible only as a slight thickening of the dark. At each boat’s stern crouched a man, gripping a length of oil-soaked straw rope — the fire-starter, not to be lit unless there was no other choice, and every man of them hoped with his whole body that it would stay unlit. Between the boats lay one long pole’s distance, so that no boat’s wake would touch the boat behind, and no one dared breathe too loudly.

A-Ping’s boat led. The lad was seventeen, so good in the water that he could change his breath under the surface — the trick his father had taught him when he was seven, in the reeds of the home channel; the channels of the West Bank, he could row without error with his eyes shut.

A-Ping had been born into a fisherman’s family by the river. His father had fished all his life and died of illness two years ago, leaving a boat, a net, and a body of water-craft handed down through the hands — the feel of the current, the turn of the bends, the places where the fish schooled and the places where the water lied. The craft passed on the way a father’s hands pass on what his mouth could never say. The day Meru took him into the caravan, he had said: ”These hands of yours were born in the river. From now on, the river is your counting-house.” A-Ping remembered that sentence the way a man remembers a debt — the debt a boy owes the man who saw what he was worth. He knelt half-crouched at the bow, one hand resting on the surface of the water, the fingers spread, as if feeling the river’s pulse through the skin.

”Turn left.” He said suddenly, low, the words coming without thinking. ”Sandbar ahead; there’s an undertow at its tail. The sand has moved since last month — the current shifted it after the rains.”

The road of the boats, A-Ping knew with his eyes shut. Where the undertows ran, where the sunken timber lay, where the bottom shelved and where it dropped — he kept in his bones, the way a farmer keeps his fields. At every stretch, he dipped his bamboo pole into the water and felt the bottom — the pole’s tip touching sand meant shallow water, and he read the grain of it; touching mud meant the deep channel, and he read the softness. The deep channel’s water was cold; the shallows’ water rang. He had been reading the river this way since he was old enough to hold the pole.

”Past North Shoal Village’s stretch.” He reported, low. ”Three li more, and we’re in the river soldiers’ water. From there, no more talking — the water carries sound farther than you’d think.”

The lights of North Shoal Village showed through the fog as a few faint points, blurred and yellow. The people of that village had been burned out by the Libyans the year before last — the houses rebuilt, the grain gone, the dead buried at the field’s edge. Now the wall was newly rebuilt, its crenellations cut to the western line’s measure. Meru knew those walls — the drawings were Seb’s, the building Kamon’s men, the measure the same measure that now stood over Thebes.

”This village,” he thought, ”shares one life with us. It held off the wolves the year before last; this year, it must help hold the city. The walls we build always come back to stand for us.”

The boats behind turned, one after another, following the lead, each turn a beat behind the one before, like a line of geese. The water sounds were so faint they were almost nothing — only the whisper of hulls brushing the water plants, a soft rustle, like a hundred small hands scratching at the bottoms of the boats, and the rustle was the only sound the night allowed.

Meru sat on the third boat. His position was the middle of the fleet — wherever something happened, he could reach it fastest, and where the merchant sat, the trade went. His pipe was unlit; he only gripped it, rubbing the bowl with his fingertip, again and again, the motion steady as a heartbeat.

”Merchant,” Old Camel on the same boat said, low, ”you’ll rub the polish right off that pipe.”

”Rubbing steadies the heart.” Meru said. ”In our trade, the bigger the deal, the steadier the heart must be. A shaking hand drops the cargo; a steady hand brings it home.”

Old Camel had been Meru’s man for fifteen years, from the Nubian camel trains to the Nile boat fleet — he had seen the merchant through sandstorms and river floods and three ruined caravans, and he had never once seen the pipe lit at a moment of decision. He said no more, only tightened the short knife at his belt, the leather creaking softly.

Twenty li out, the channel widened.

After leaving the side channel, the fleet first crossed a stretch of open water. On this stretch, no reed beds on either bank — only bare river flats, the water lying wide and exposed under the sky, the banks flat and empty. Though the moon had not come out, the thin clouds above filtered the sky-light into a gray-white, the color of old bone. The boats moved on the water like a few strokes of pale ink on a gray page — visible, if anyone cared to look, and the open water felt like a lit room after the dark of the channels.

”This stretch has to be fast.” Meru said, low. ”No cover at all; every moment we linger is a moment more of danger. Speed is the only wall here.”

The oars of all six boats put on speed. The blades cut shallow, moved fast, the splashes kept tiny — each stroke a whisper, each recovery a silence. The hulls parting the water made a soft, rushing sound, like wind through a grove of slender bamboo, and the sound ran ahead of them into the dark.

The river soldiers’ torch boats lay moored on the deep-water line at mid-river — two of them, one south, one north, torches fixed at their bows, burning with a crackling sound that carried across the water, the flames steady and orange.

Meru’s fleet hugged the west bank, almost brushing the reeds, the hulls sliding through the last fringe of shadow. The fog helped. The torchlight through the mist was only a blurred yellow, a stain on the gray, and the boats were outside the stain. The men on the boats held their breath; even the rowing changed to poling, the poles going in without a splash and coming up without a sound.

And at that moment, from A-Ping’s boat ahead, came two extremely soft taps — ”tap, tap” — the sound of an oar handle striking the gunwale, the signal they had agreed on, the signal that meant: something is up.

Something was up.

Meru rose half-crouched, his hand on the gunwale. He saw that the two torch boats at mid-river had moved. Not toward them — downstream. In the downstream direction, several torches had suddenly flared on the river, bright against the dark.

Three torches, swaying in the fog, drifting toward the north bank. That was the bait. As arranged, the bait boats had set out an hour early, looped around downstream through the side channels, and then lit their torches and rowed boldly toward the north bank, pretending to be smuggled cargo boats — the torches held high, the silhouettes black against the flame.

The river soldiers’ two boats chased, as expected — the wakes of their big boats cutting white lines through the dark, the torchlight jerking as they turned.

”Fast!” Meru hissed. ”Use this moment!”

The oars of all six boats suddenly quickened, the blades biting and pulling, the strokes coming fast and even. The bows cut through the fog like shuttles, driving south along the west bank, the water rushing past the hulls. The rush was loud now, and no one cared — the noise of their passage was the price of the moment. This stretch of river, two li wide, was tonight’s gate of death, and they were running the gate.

But they had just crossed mid-river when a black line suddenly lay across the water ahead.

A boom. Braided hemp rope, thick as a man’s arm, spanning half the river, both ends tied to stakes driven into the river mud, the rope hanging in a low curve. Strings of pottery shards hung from the rope at intervals, clinking softly as the water pushed them, the clinks small and sharp in the night.

”A boom!” A-Ping’s voice was tight with strain, barely a breath. ”Newly set! It’s not on the map! They’ve set it since we came through!”

The shards on the boom knocked together in the night wind, making a thin, fine sound. The sound was small — but on such a night, it carried half a li, and carried meant death. In the shallow water behind the boom, several stakes were planted, their points just above the surface — these were for the small boats: a boat strikes one, the stake breaks with a crack, and the shore knows, and the knowing brings the river soldiers.

”They’ve learned.” Meru stared at the row of stakes, his mind working fast, the merchant’s calculation running behind his eyes — the way it ran when a price moved against him and the whole cargo hung on the next word. Force the boom — the shards ring, the stakes break, the river soldiers turn back, and all six boats are finished in the middle of open water. Turn around — the torch boats two li away were already burning this way, their wakes white in the dark. The two roads were both closed; the map in his breast had a third line on it, half-drawn, half-remembered.

”No forcing, no turning back.” He said. ”South. On the south bank below, there’s half a hidden channel cut out by the current — the water broke through the bank last flood season and never healed it. The map doesn’t show it all — last time we probed halfway, the water was too shallow, and I turned back. Tonight the water’s high — the rains upstream have held it up. It will pass.”

”You’re sure?” Old Camel’s voice was tight, the knife already half out of his belt.

”No.” Meru said. ”But ahead is the boom, behind is the fire boats. This hidden channel in the middle — that’s our life. Gamble it — in our trade, when the time comes to gamble, a man stakes his life, and a man who won’t stake it has no business on this river.”

Meru’s heart rose into his throat. He looked upstream — the torch boats chasing the bait were still two li away, but that point of light was already burning the back of his neck, the way a debt burns a man who cannot pay it; the distance between the light and his boats was shrinking with every beat of the oars. He looked at the south bank. The south bank was the rebels’ south camp, campfires scattered like coals thrown on the ground, the embers of an army’s evening, the glow of them lying on the water. The north bank... the north bank was river flats, and beyond them, the willow grove where the twenty archers lay hidden, not knowing the boats had been forced off course.

”Back into the channel.” Meru said, the decision coming out clean and hard. ”Rear boats to the front; enter the small channel to the south. The channel is shallow — big boats cannot come in, the mud will hold them. We hug the south bank and pass under the very eyes of the rebels’ south camp — they watch the river, not the bank. Men look where they expect to see; they do not look where nothing has ever come.”

”Merchant — there are sentries outside the south camp!” Old Camel said urgently, his voice cracking.

”There are sentries, and there is also the dark under the lamps.” Meru said. ”Their sentries all face the fire line south of the city — that is where the noise is, where the danger is supposed to be, and a man’s eyes go where his fear goes. The places in shadow — those are the roads. The dark behind a lamp is the oldest road there is.”

The six boats turned about without a sound, the oars coming in, and slipped into a small channel on the south bank, the reeds closing over them like a door.

The channel was narrow enough for one boat at a time, the reeds scraping the hulls as they passed. The reeds on both sides rose higher than a man’s head, pressing blackly inward, their tops brushing the sky, their stems closing over the boats so that the fleet vanished into the bank as if it had never been. The water was shallow; the oars were useless, and the men went overboard one by one, gripping the gunwales and dragging the boats forward, step by step, their feet finding the mud, their hands finding the wood. The water reached their thighs, icy — the cold of the deep night water, cold enough to set their teeth chattering, the chattering running through the line of men like a shudder.

”Quiet.” Meru went into the water too, the mud sucking at his feet. One hand on the boat, the other feeling for the reeds in the dark, he said, low, his voice carrying no farther than the next boat: ”This water can’t be colder than the bottom of the city’s pot. Think of the people in the city waiting for grain. Think of their hands on the bowls.”

No one made a sound. Only the water, and the sound of hundreds of feet pulling out of the river mud and setting down again, the suck and release of the mud holding them.

The mud was soft; a foot sank in, and took an age to pull out, the suction pulling at the leg. The mud was mixed with broken pottery shards — the leavings of the camp above — that stabbed the soles of the feet. Someone’s foot was cut, a sharp intake of breath bitten off, and he did not dare cry out; he set his teeth and moved on, step by step, the blood washing away in the dark water.

”Slow is slow,” Meru said, ”but slow has its good side. The river soldiers’ big boats cannot press into such shallow water — the mud would hold them like a hand. This mud — this is our wall. A wall of mud is still a wall.”

Walking, he looked up at the south bank from time to time. The south camp’s torches were a blurred expanse of yellow through the fog, the campfires glowing like the embers of a great hearth, the smoke of them lying low over the water. Once a sentry passed above — a shadow against the torchlight, his spear on his shoulder — his boots scuffing on the sand, the sound mingling with the sound of their own feet in the mud, so close that a man might have reached up and touched his heel. The sentry’s torch swept the bank and moved on, finding nothing but reeds and fog, and the fog closed behind the light like water closing behind a stone.

”The places in shadow — those are the roads.” Meru repeated the sentence, as if saying it to himself, as if the repetition were a charm. The fleet hugged the black shadow of the reeds, inch by inch, creeping past the very eyes of thirty thousand enemies — the breath of the men held, the boats moving like things the night had forgotten, the mud sucking softly at every foot.

The channel bent twice. Past the second bend, the south camp’s lights were far behind, the yellow blur shrinking into the fog, and the men’s held breath came out in long, quiet sighs. The channel’s end connected to an irrigation ditch outside the city — the ditch the fields had drunk from in the old years — and at the ditch’s west end lay the beach west of the city, and the beach was their door.

A-Tu’s small boat was waiting there, hidden in the reeds at the ditch’s mouth.

”Merchant Meru!” A-Tu came up, his voice pressed low, his hand finding Meru’s arm in the dark. ”You made it! The river soldiers’ patrols were thick in the first half of the night — they moved their boats twice, I thought you’d been lost!”

”Close.” Meru wiped the water from his face, the motion quick. ”The boom is new — set since our last run, and they’ve staked the shallows behind it, the stakes set for small boats. If the channel hadn’t been open, tonight’s cargo would be feeding the fish, and the fish would eat well.” He looked back the way he had come, at the fog lying low over the water. ”The river takes its toll on the careless. Tonight it let us pass.”

”Quick!” A-Tu said. ”Dawn is coming. Young Nubu is waiting at the west gate with the carts. The moment the goods touch the beach, they go into the gate tunnel — the city is awake and waiting, and a city that waits is a city that is ready.”

Stone slabs had already been laid on the beach west of the city — the temporary unloading point Mery’s people had built by day: slabs for a base, against the damp, against the mud swallowing the goods. The six boats touched the beach, and the men aboard began to unload.

At that moment, the city’s west gate opened a crack, silently.

Out of the crack came a lantern wrapped in cloth, swung three times.

”One of ours.” A-Tu said. ”Nubu’s lantern. Three swings — the bank is safe.”

The crack widened. Inside the gate tunnel, the small carts were already lined up, one after another, their wheels freshly wrapped in cloth. The carts were spread with straw mats — against knocks, against damp, the mats laid smooth so that no splinter could reach a sack. The movers stood in a human chain from the beach to the gate tunnel — the men on the boats passed, the men on the beach received, the men in the tunnel passed on, the men in the depot stacked. A sack of grain, from boat to depot, passed through six pairs of hands, without ever touching the ground, and the hands moved in a rhythm that needed no words.

”Fast, but steady.” Mery directed from the gate tunnel, his voice low and even, carrying over the work. ”Grain on the left, medicine on the right — don’t mix them. The oilcloth on the medicine chests — no one lifts it halfway. A chest uncovered for one breath of river air is a chest the damp has found.”

Among the movers were old men, half-grown lads, and a few women just off the night shift — the women had come from the hospital’s washing lines and the granary’s counting tables, and they moved with the same even pace. No one spoke; only the dull thud of goods touching goods, and the soft scuff of hundreds of feet on the stone slabs, and the low breathing of a city working in the dark.

When the sky was turning pale, the last bundle of chopped straw went into the depot. Mery stood at the depot door and looked back at the beach once — the beach was empty, only a few impressions pressed by the boats’ bottoms, and a night’s worth of dew.

Meru sat on the bench at the depot door for a little while, the water still drying on his clothes. That night he had gone into the water, waded the mud, and half-shouted his voice away; his boots were full of river, and he did not take them off. Old Camel brought him a bowl of hot water; he took it in both hands, warming them on the bowl, and drank, mouthful by mouthful, the steam rising into his face.

”Merchant,” Old Camel said, ”will they chase us next trip?”

”They’ll chase.” Meru said. ”And chase harder. Stakes in the channels, arrows at any boat — those are the tricks they’ll think of tonight. So next trip: the cargo halves, the boats halve, three batches instead of one. Lose one boat, and two still get through.”

”Then this trade of ours...”

”This trade is no longer a trade.” Meru said. ”It’s a tug of war. They block an inch; we probe an inch. They plant a stake; we go around a bend. As long as the river flows, the boats can still run. The day the river stops flowing—” he smiled, ”the river never stops.”

Old Camel laughed too. In the growing light, the two men shared the last half-bowl of hot water.

Meru looked back along the way he had come. The direction of the side channel was black and hidden; nothing could be seen. But he knew that the two torch boats chasing the bait would be discovering the trick about now.

”Quick.” He said. ”Before the light is full, everything into the depot.”

The goods went through the gate tunnel while the city was still quiet.

Young Nubu waited inside the tunnel with two of the loyal men. Sack after sack, packet after packet, roll after roll of oilcloth came off the boats, through the tunnel, onto the small carts. The wheels were newly wrapped in cloth, and on the stone slabs they made only a faint rumble.

But the sound still woke the people of the lane.

The first door to open belonged to the old woman who sold dates, inside the west gate. She heard the sound, peered through her door crack for a long time, her eyes adjusting to the dark, and then suddenly pulled the door open — barefoot, standing in the doorway, her hair loose — and asked: ”Is it... is it grain?” The words came out before she could stop them, her hands gripping the door frame.

”It’s grain.” Young Nubu said, low. ”And medicine. Keep your voice down, auntie.”

The old woman said nothing. She turned and went inside, and came out again holding a bowl of water. The water was cold; the rim of the bowl caught the night light.

”Lad, drink a mouthful first.” She held the bowl out to a porter. ”You’ve been out all night...”

The porter did not stand on ceremony. He took the bowl, tipped his head back, and drank. When he was done, he handed it back, saying: ”Auntie, go back to bed. From tomorrow, when you draw your grain, you’ll see it for yourself.”

The old woman did not go back to bed. She stood at her door, watching the carts pass her threshold one after another — the sacks, the chests, the rolls of oilcloth moving past in the dark, the wheels murmuring on the stones. Watching, she began to wipe her eyes, and the wiping did not stop for a long time. She had lived through the burning years and the lean years, and she knew the weight of what was passing her door.

The goods were weighed into the transfer depot from the small hours on.

Mery set up a long table at the depot door, spread a wet cloth on it — the cloth laid so that the ledgers would not stick to the wood — and laid out three ledgers. Every sack of grain that came in: one weighing, one entry in the receiving ledger, the charcoal moving in his small even hand. The medicine chests were counted by number — one chest, one mark, the marks falling in neat rows. The materials, by bundle, the bundles counted twice. Old Camel led the hands carrying them in; Nubu led the stacking — grain against the north wall, medicine against the south wall, materials in the middle. Three lanes, and no one stepped on another’s; the stacks rose straight as walls.

”Gently, all of you.” Mery did not raise his head. ”Every single thing in this depot will go into the books from now on. What’s in the books must be in the depot. Short by one straw, and I’ll ask why.”

Among the movers were several half-grown children. They could not carry grain sacks, so two of them together carried one bundle of straw. Mery saw them and did not chase them away; he only had a clerk press half a barley cake into each child’s hand.

”Come help tomorrow,” he said, ”and you get half a cake again.”

The child took a bite of the cake and asked: ”Will there be more goods tomorrow?”

”There will.” Mery said. ”As long as boats can still run on the river, this depot takes goods every day.”

Near dawn, the goods were all stacked. Mery checked the three ledgers against one another, and at the last page of each wrote a single number. The three numbers were exactly the same.

Lu Zhu came at the Chen hour, when the light was fully up and the city’s day had begun.

He walked three circles through the depot, looking at the grain stacks — the sacks plump and even — at the medicine racks, at the materials in their places, the lime bundles squared, the oilcloth rolled. He pressed a hand against a grain sack, felt the weight of it, and nodded once. At last he stood before the three ledgers, opened them, and read page by page, his finger moving down the columns.

”Three numbers,” he said, ”exactly the same. Good.”

”Every day from now on.” Mery said. ”This depot’s rules are the same as the granary’s — not a fraction off the books. What the river brings in, the ledgers hold; what the ledgers hold, the city can count on.”

”The granary is the city’s stomach.” Lu Zhu said. ”This depot is the city’s second mouth. The stomach must hold; the mouth must eat. When the in and the out are both clean, the city can live.”

He closed the ledgers and looked out the door. Outside, the day was fully light. In the distance, the ramming on the wall had begun again.

By dawn of the next day, half of the west gate quarter knew: during the night, the caravan had come into the city.

Before the light was fully up, the square outside the transfer depot was crowded.

The people who came were not there to draw grain — grain-drawing had its own hour. They had come to look. To look at the grain sacks stacked in the three old sheds, at the wooden chests labeled with the character for ”medicine,” at the neatly tied rolls of oilcloth and the lime. A few children peered through the door frame, were pulled back by adult hands, and a moment later peered in again.

”How much?” An old man asked.

”Grain — enough for twenty days. Medicine — enough for half a month. Materials — enough for two months of repairs.” Mery stood at the depot door and reported, item by item. ”This is the first batch. More are coming.”

A low sound ran through the crowd — a sound of relief, and of disbelief.

”Really?” Someone asked. ”The city’s surrounded like this — how did the goods... get in?”

”Never mind how the goods got in.” Meru came out of the depot, spinning his unlit pipe in his hand. ”Only mind whether the goods are here. In our trade: goods arrive, account settled. My account is this water road. As long as the water road runs, the goods keep coming.”

The crowd was still for a moment — the stillness of people taking in a thing too large for the morning. Then, no one knew who began it, people began to bow to Meru. One. Two. Then a whole stretch of them, the bows spreading through the crowd like a wave, the old and the young and the women with children in their arms.

Meru was stunned. He had done business half his life — he had seen men pay, seen men thank, seen men argue over a price. He had never seen this. The pipe hung in his hand, forgotten.

”Don’t, don’t.” He waved his hands. ”You’ll overwhelm me. I’m only a delivery man.”

”Merchant Meru,” the date-selling old woman pushed out from behind the crowd, ”what you deliver is not goods. It’s life. The lives of the whole city.”

Meru opened his mouth, and could not find the words. He tucked the pipe back into his belt, turned, and went back into the depot. As he turned, he wiped his face with his sleeve — very fast, like wiping a water stain off a boat.

All that day, the city talked of nothing but the boats.

Those who talked did not know the boats’ names — some called them ”the merchant’s boats,” some ”the night boats,” none had seen them in the light. They only knew the boats came in the middle of the night, from the river, past the river soldiers’ arrows, through the seams of the reed beds. Under the grain bulletin at the south gate, someone said, low: ”Did you hear? There was a stir on the river last night — I took it for the river soldiers’ patrol, and I lay awake half the night for nothing. It was the boats bringing us grain.”

”From now on,” another said, ”when we hear a stir on the river at night, we can sleep easy. That’s life stirring.”

At a lane mouth, a few children had made a song of what they had heard in the night and were chasing one another, singing: ”Midnight boat, no lamp lit, Merchant Meru, through the channel...” An adult heard them and slapped each one on the back of the head: ”Shh! Is this a thing to sing in the street?” The children scattered, tongues out — and the moment they were out of sight, went on singing, softly.

At noon, at the grain issue points, the grain was new grain.

The new grain was what Meru had carried in — the kernels full and plump, bright gold in color, the grain of the good fields, harvested when the year was kind. When the clerk opened a sack, the dry scent of new grain spread out over the queue, and the people’s heads turned toward it as one. Someone drew a deep breath and said: ”Smell that — a man’s heart settles. This is the smell of the year being kind.”

”Tonight we can eat it thick.” A woman said, low, to her husband. ”The children have had nothing but thin porridge these days.”

”Don’t make it all thick.” The man said. ”Save it. Merchant Meru’s boats can’t come every day.”

The woman nodded. She thought a moment, then said: ”Then I’ll throw in an extra handful of dates and boil them in. Not thick — but with a taste of date in it.”

The queue moved forward slowly. Everyone who drew their grain gripped the mouth of the sack tight, as if gripping a share of good days just come into their hands.

The medicine was carried in by Shafi and her people.

She brought four medicine boys and carried the wooden chests labeled with the character for ”medicine” into the hospital’s medicine bay, one by one. With each chest she made an entry in the register: chest one, wound medicines, two packets; chest two, bleeding-cloth, three rolls... When she reached the last chest, her hand paused a moment, and she wrote the last line more slowly than all the lines before it.

”Teacher,” she looked up, her eyes shining, ”wound medicines — a full month now.”

”Good.” Imset said. ”But use them sparingly. The next batch — no telling when it comes.”

”I know.” Shafi said. ”The more we have, the more we must act as if we had nothing. A month of medicine spent in ten days is no month at all — it is a rumor of a month. The register will tell the truth, and the truth is what we ration by.”

She took the slip reading ”the critical first; the light take less” from her breast and pasted it up again. This time, she pasted it especially straight.

That same morning, the first batch of new wound medicines was used.

The first to have his dressing changed was an old soldier of the guard, an arrow wound in the shoulder that had festered for four days, a ring of red swelling around it. When Sister Wei passed him the new bleeding-cloth, her hands were trembling a little — this cloth was thick, tight-woven, and carried the smell of dry grass.

”Good cloth.” The old soldier lowered his head and sniffed it, the smell of dry grass and clean weaving filling his lungs. ”This cloth is from the West Bank. You can smell the river on it — the good smell, the one that means it was dried in the river wind.”

”It is from the West Bank.” Sister Wei said. ”Merchant Meru sent it through the night.”

”Then this arm of mine,” the old soldier said, ”is saved by Merchant Meru from now on. When the siege is lifted, I’ll stand him a drink — I can’t afford the dear kind, so it’ll be date wine.”

In the hospital’s yard, beside the old bandage strips drying in the sun, several rows of new cloth now hung. The wind moved them, old and new together. Neht squatted nearby and looked at them for a long time: ”I’ve looked at wounds for half my life. This is the first time I’ve found that hanging out bandages is beautiful.”

The wounded in the hospital all knew that medicine had come in during the night.

No one shouted; no one wept. Only a few of the lightly wounded propped themselves up and looked toward the medicine bay. After a long look, one of them said: ”Last night I dreamed of boats. A whole river of boats, and every boat full of medicine. It turns out — it wasn’t a dream.”

”It wasn’t a dream.” The man beside him said. ”It was Merchant Meru’s boats.” He said the name the way a man says a name he plans to remember — the name of the man who had brought the river back to the city.

When the light was fully up, Lu Zhu and Meru met on the wall.

The two men stood behind the crenellations of the south wall, looking at the rebels’ camp beyond the city. The morning fog had not fully cleared; the rebels’ tents showed through the mist, dim and vague, like a gray sea lying at the city’s feet. Between them and the wall stood the works of the royal army — the ditches and the towers, the tents of thirty thousand men beyond them — all standing their watch in the gray light.

”Last night — of the two bait boats, how many came back?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Not one.” Meru said. ”The river soldiers burned them both. The boats were loaded with bran and coarse cloth — made to be burned. All four hands jumped into the water. Old Wu took an arrow in the arm and swam to the north bank on his own. All alive, none badly hurt.” He paused. ”Only Shunzi — the boy took a bad chill. I sent him back to the West Bank to warm up.”

”The people of the West Bank,” Lu Zhu said, ”have done a great thing this time.”

”For deeds done, I keep accounts.” Meru said. ”This trade has to go on. Burn two empty boats, and the city gets a hold of grain and medicine. A fair trade — and the next run will be loaded with what the city needs most, counted against this night’s account.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. After a while he asked: ”Can the road still be traveled, from now on?”

”It can.” Meru said. ”This trip — one boat and two holds of bran bought us the river soldiers’ playbook. The boom is new, but it only blocks the main channel — the deep water, where the big boats lie. The side channels they cannot enter; the mud holds their drafts, and the reeds hide ours. From now on, don’t load the boats so full; split into more trips. One trip every three days, four boats a trip, the loads smaller and the runs more frequent. What gets in, keeps life.” He paused. ”Only one thing — the channel past the south camp, we used it tonight. They’ll find it sooner or later; a road used once is a road noticed. I have to probe another.”

”There’s still one more.” Lu Zhu said. ”Your letter said: of the three water routes, you’ve mapped two.”

”The third is the hardest.” Meru said. ”It passes under the fire line south of the city. I haven’t run it yet.”

”Then run it slowly.” Lu Zhu said. ”Run it through, and the whole board comes alive — the third road is the one that makes the other two safe, because a man with three roads can never be cornered.”

The two men stood on the wall for a long time. The sun rose, turning the rebels’ camp pale white. In the morning wind, Meru’s pipe was finally lit. He drew on it, squinting, and watched the smoke trail away into the wind, wisp by wisp.

”Lu Zhu,” he said suddenly, ”tell me — I’ve done business for half my life, crossed the deserts and the rivers, counted silver in a hundred markets. What have I been after, all this time?”

”Silver, before.” Lu Zhu said.

”Right. Silver, before.” Meru said. ”Not anymore. Now I want one thing only — the lamps of this city, burning through the night. The lamps of the granary and the hospital and the lanes, all of them burning. If the lamps burn, it means the goods I deliver were not delivered in vain — and a merchant’s cargo is never wasted when it keeps a lamp burning.”

He knocked his pipe out on the crenellation. The ash fell, drifting, scattering in the morning light.

”The lamps will burn.” Lu Zhu said. ”And when they burn, it will be because of the roads you walked. A lamp is a road that stayed lit.”

”One more thing.” Meru said. ”On the way here, I passed the old ferry landing of the West Bank. The old man there asked after you — asked when the master builder would come back to the West Bank for a look. He said the West Bank’s granaries are still run by the rules you left, and not one grain has rotted.”

”The West Bank...” Lu Zhu said the two characters like an old name he had not spoken for a long time. ”When this city is out of the siege, I’ll go back and look.”

”Come back — that’s right.” Meru said. ”The West Bank is where we started. Now: I run outside, you hold inside. One delivers, one receives. Not so different from the old days when we sold grain in partnership.”

”Very different.” Lu Zhu said. ”In the old days, we sold grain to save money. Now we deliver grain to keep life going.”

Meru did not answer. He squinted, knocked the ash clean out of his pipe, packed it fresh — and did not light it. After a long moment he said: ”On this whole road, I’ve worked out one principle. When trade reaches its end, goods are things outside the body; roads are the real skill. Walk the road through, and even the greatest difficulty has a way out.”

”So you walked three water routes down to two.” Lu Zhu said.

”Two and a half.” Meru said. ”The third — I’ll walk it through for you next time.”

Meru drew the river map from his breast, unrolled it, and laid it on the crenellation. The map was stained with ink: arrows, circles, the marks he had added along the way.

”This map,” he said, ”I give to you. Keep one copy in the city — the copy stays with the defense map, so that whoever holds the city holds the river too. From now on, when my men come, which road they take is all on the map, and the men of the city will know the roads as well as my own crews. If it ever comes to the worst—” he pointed at a thin line on the map, a line drawn lighter than the rest, ”this road is the one I keep for last. Unless there is no other way, don’t use it.”

”Why?”

”Because this road passes under the fire line south of the city.” Meru said. ”Run it through, and the whole board comes alive; fail it, and the boat sinks and the men die — there is no third outcome.”

Lu Zhu looked at the thin line for a long time. He rolled the map up and put it in his breast: ”I’ll keep it for you. For you — and for this river.”

And twenty li downstream of the river bend, two boats burned down to their skeletons were drifting with the current.

The river soldiers had chased all night, and what they caught was two boats of bran. The centurion in command stood at the bow, his face greener than the river water. He squatted, scooped up a handful of the swollen bran, and held it to his nose — and then he laughed.

”A fine merchant.” He said. ”He fished us with bran. This night, he has made a great profit.”

The centurion of the river soldiers returned to camp at first light.

He had chased up and down the river half the night — the oarsmen spent, the torches burned to stubs — and brought back two piles of charred planks, dragged ashore and laid at the camp gate like a pair of dead animals. The soldiers passing by stopped to look, and when they had looked, no one spoke; the charred planks said everything that needed saying. The planks were still warm, and the smell of burnt bran hung over the gate.

”Did you see it clearly?” The guard at the gate asked.

”Clearly.” The centurion said. ”Two boats of bran. They fished us with bran — and six boats of real goods slipped past under the south camp’s very eyes.”

”And the south camp’s men?”

The centurion did not answer. He looked toward the south camp and spat: ”They were watching the fire line south of the city. And on the far side of that fire line, the royal army beat its drums all night. The drums and the boats on the river — they’re the same thing.”

That night, the south camp’s sentries doubled. The soldiers on watch fixed their eyes on the river and did not dare blink. But at the mouth of the side channel, there was only fog — white, unbroken, showing nothing.

”This fog,” a sentry swore, low, ”is in league with them.”

When the news reached the commander’s tent, Nekhem had just finished his morning devotions.

The man in white knelt outside the tent and reported the night’s events, exactly as they had happened: two false boats, six true boats, a boom that had not stopped them, goods from the side channel into the city. This morning the city’s transfer depot was half full of grain and medicine.

Nekhem listened, and was silent for a long time — the silence of a man who does not like to be shown a seam in his own wall. Slowly he set down the bronze mirror in his hand — the mirror he used at his devotions, its surface polished bright, showing his own graying temples and the stillness of his own face. When he spoke, his voice was level, the level of a man measuring a new fact against an old plan.

”A side channel.” He repeated. ”They used the side channels.”

”Yes.” The man in white said. ”The small channel outside the south camp — the boats are small and the water shallow; our big boats cannot enter. Their boats go exactly where ours cannot.”

”The big boats cannot enter the channel — but men can.” Nekhem said. ”Pass the order — at both ends of the channel, on the beaches: hidden stakes, hidden sentries. From now on, if the river stirs at night — arrows first, questions after.” He paused, and his voice held no anger — only a very deep cold: ”And the south camp’s men, from tomorrow, their eyes cannot rest only on the fire line to the south. The places in shadow must grow eyes too.”

”Yes.” The man in white withdrew.

The tent was quiet again. Nekhem walked to the tent’s mouth, lifted the flap a hand’s breadth, and looked at the river. The river lay white and blank in the moonlight — like a fish showing its belly.

”A merchant.” He said, low. ”I have calculated the walls, the wells, the granaries — I have calculated the garrison, the rations, the hours of the watches. I never calculated that a merchant’s boats would come out of the reed beds. The one trade I did not count is the trade of the river.”

He let the flap fall and went back to his desk. The campaign map still lay open. He picked up his charcoal and drew a small boat-shape at the position of the West Bank. When it was drawn, he stared at the boat for a long time — and then, with his fingertip, erased it, little by little.

Beyond the tent, the wind came off the river and set the camp banners snapping loudly.

And at that hour, Meru’s fleet was leaving the city’s west, without a sound.

Six boats had come; four went back. Two small boats had been left in the city — A-Tu said they would be useful for ferrying on the river from now on, for the messages and the wounded and the small things that a big boat cannot carry. The four boats hugged the west bank, heading north, oars wrapped in cloth, no lamps at the bows — the discipline of the night run held even in the daylight. The sun was already low; the river lay spread with broken gold, and the boats moved through it like leaves on a pond.

”Tonight we rest at the West Bank.” Meru said to Old Camel. ”Tomorrow, back to the new capital, and the next batch of goods.”

”Merchant,” A-Ping rowed and suddenly said, low, ”look behind.”

Meru looked back.

In the dusk of the West Bank shore, several mounted shadows were following them along the bank, slowly. Faces could not be made out — only the bows slung across their backs, and the arrows already notched on the strings.

”The rebels’ roving riders.” Old Camel’s voice was tight. ”They’ve followed us for half a li.”

Meru said nothing. He looked at the shadows for a while — and then he laughed.

”Let them follow.” He said. ”Let them see whether their horses are faster or my boats are steadier — a horse tires at the water’s edge, and a boat does not. A merchant’s road has always been walked into being — what a horse can travel, a boat can travel. What a boat can travel, a horse can only watch.”

He waved to the fleet: ”Oars up, all. Before the light is fully gone, past the bend ahead, and we’re in our own waters.”

The oars rose as one. The four boats, like four leaves, went north over the golden river.

But before they had gone three li, the shadows of two patrol boats appeared on the river ahead.

The river soldiers’ boats. The light had not fully gone, and their patrol had come an hour earlier than usual — the order from the camp had reached them, and the patrols had been tightened. The torches at their bows were already lit, flaring and dimming in the dusk, the light sweeping the banks as the boats came on.

”Ship the oars!” Meru hissed. ”Into the reeds!”

The four boats swung almost sideways into the reed beds of the west bank. The reeds rose higher than a man; the boats went in, only half their sterns showing. The river soldiers’ patrol boats passed on the main channel, and the torchlight swept across the tops of the reeds — and swept back.

At that moment, an arrow hissed from the bank and struck A-Ping’s gunwale. The white fletching trembled in the wind.

It was the roving riders. They had not gone far — they crouched behind the earthen rise on the bank. Seeing the boats enter the reeds, they had loosed their arrows. A second and a third hissed past the reed stalks, startling up a flock of water birds that flew flapping toward mid-river.

”Don’t move.” Meru’s voice was steady. ”They’re shooting blind. The reeds are thick; they can’t see the boats. Wait for the patrol to pass, wait for the dark to settle — then we go.”

The men on the boats did not dare breathe. A-Ping half-crouched at the gunwale, drew the arrow out of the wood, looked at it, and tucked it into the hold.

”Keep it.” He said. ”Next time I meet this kind of arrow, I’ll give it back.”

On the bank, the mounted shadows were still following, keeping their distance, the horses’ heads low. The man at the head reined in at last, and spat toward the river, the spittle catching the last light.

”Those boats won’t run many more times.” He said. ”The High Priest’s order is out: stakes in the channels, arrows at any boat, and the sentries have been told to watch the shadows as well as the fire line. Next time — it’ll be them praying to their gods.”

He wheeled his horse and went south. The dust kicked up by the hooves hung in the dusk, and did not settle for a long time.

And in the direction the four leaves were heading north, the lamps of the West Bank were lighting, one after another — the lamps of the granaries and the houses and the landing, coming on in the dusk. They stood like a row of people waiting on the far bank, standing on tiptoe, looking this way, counting the boats as they came.

At the bow, Meru looked back once at the road he had come. The direction of Thebes showed nothing now — only the torches of the city wall, a thin bright line at the sky’s edge, like a string drawn taut.

”Next time I come,” he said, ”with twice the goods — and by the hardest road.”

In the sound of the oars, the four boats sailed into the lamps of the West Bank. The lamplight fell on the river, breaking into a thousand pieces — as if someone had scattered all the stars of the sky into the water.
