Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 78: Chapter 14: Wartime Deployment — The Whole City Shifts to a War Footing

The second military dispatch slammed onto the floor of the assembly hall before the sky was light.

It was already the second in three days. The first had said Thebes had sealed its gates and the grain road was cut; this one was far heavier than the first. The courier had changed horses all the way from the south. He burst through the door, his legs unable to hold him, dropping half-kneeling on the threshold, a sweat-soaked roll of sheepskin held high over his head, his throat wheezing like a bellows:

”Master Builder! Eight-hundred-li urgent dispatch! Nekhem... Nekhem has formally raised the army in Thebes! Most of the towns of Upper Egypt, large and small, have raised their banners with him! The rebels have massed thirty thousand men — the vanguard has already left Thebes’s north gate, heading for the new capital!”

The hall went still. Wind poured in through the open door, cold from the night, and the oil lamp on the table leaned and swayed, throwing the shadows of the room’s columns against the wall like living things. The sheepskin still trembled in the courier’s hand; sweat and mud dripped down its edge and darkened the plaster of the threshold.

The three numbers — thirty thousand, three thousand, the vanguard already on the road — landed in the hall the way stones land in still water: a stillness first, then the rings. Every man in the room had spent the past days doing arithmetic — grain by twice the heads, walls by the foot, medicines by the roll. The dispatch’s numbers met that arithmetic the way a key meets a lock: it fitted, and the lock had been waiting.

Across the hall, men who had not moved through years of meetings shifted in their seats. The Overseer’s hand stopped halfway to his cup. Meru’s fingers closed on the edge of his goods list. Imset’s hands in his lap turned slowly over, once. The stillness was the kind that comes before a decision, and the decision, this time, was not the city’s to make alone.

Lu Zhu stood. What he looked at first was not the courier — it was the new capital’s defense map on the wall.

He walked over, took the map down from the wall, and laid it flat on the table. The charcoal was already in his hand. These days, his charcoal and the defense map had not left his reach.

The map was the same map he had drawn months before, when the city had still been a matter of building: the streets, the quarters, the granaries, the temple. It had served the building years well. Now, looking at it, he saw it with different eyes — the walls as lines of defense, the gates as points of entry, the granaries as targets. The map had not changed. The eyes had.

”When did they leave the north gate?” he asked.

”The day before the report.” The courier said. ”The vanguard is cavalry — light. The main force behind it is two days slower.”

”How many men?”

The courier swallowed, caught his breath, and said: ”Vanguard, three thousand. The main force — they say thirty thousand.”

Lu Zhu’s charcoal paused over the sheepskin for an instant, then came down.

”Thirty thousand.” He repeated it, tapping the charcoal lightly on the defense map south of the south gate. He did not look up; his eyes stayed on the map. ”Which road do they take?”

”The official road along the river’s east bank.” The courier said.

Lu Zhu nodded. His charcoal followed the road on the map, from south to north, all the way to the new capital’s south gate. When the line was drawn, he circled the south gate, and crossed out the two ferry crossings on the road’s halfway stretch.

”Thirty thousand men, on one road.” He said, low, as if speaking to himself. ”One road — one lifeline. Block it, and the city gains a measure.”

The two crossed-out ferry crossings were the first moves of the siege, drawn before the siege had begun: the crossings were the road’s only choke points, where thirty thousand men would have to slow, to ferry, to expose themselves. The circles and crosses on the map were not decorations — they were the city’s first answers, and they would be followed by ditches, stakes, and arrow-slits before the week was out.

He straightened, and said to the men in the hall: ”Send the order down. Wake everyone. Before dawn — meeting in the assembly hall. Not one person missing.”

The courier was helped out to get water — two men of the hall took him by the arms, and his legs folded under him as he rose, so that they half-carried him through the door. Lu Zhu did not sleep, and did not sit. He stood before the table, looking at the defense map again and again. Half a measure of lamp oil burned away; he added half a measure more, and the wick spat once, then burned even and steady.

He remembered, many years ago, when he had first come to inhabit the body of this young priest named Imhotep — his only thought then had been: save enough money and grain, and find the road home. Later, the road grew farther, and home grew farther, and what he built grew more and more. And today, standing before this defense map, he understood one thing — he no longer thought of himself as an outsider.

The understanding had been growing for years, and the defense map had brought it to completion: a man who draws a city’s walls, and then draws the same walls’ defenses, has stopped being a visitor. The road home had not been found. The home had been built, around him, without his noticing — out of granaries and houses and a temple and a healing hall, and now out of the wall that would hold them all.

”This city,” he said, low, ”is my home now.”

As the eastern sky went pale, Kamon arrived first. He looked at Lu Zhu’s state — the standing figure, the hand still on the map, the lamp burning down. He asked nothing. He found a bench for himself, sat, took out his stone chisel, and wiped it slowly with his tunic, a carefulness he gave to nothing else.

Before dawn, the company was complete.

Kamon, Meru, Meri, Imset, Shafi, Asaf, Tia, the Chief Overseer — all present. Several lamps were lit, throwing the room’s people into half-light, half-shadow. No one exchanged greetings; no one asked ”how could this happen.” Those who should come had come.

Meru was the last to arrive, still holding half an unverified goods list against his chest, his other hand working a tallow-stained fold of the papyrus between his fingers. Meri gripped his small notebook, its corners worn soft from handling, his thumb resting on the dog-eared fold. Imset sat in the darkest corner, hands folded in his lap, face unreadable; Shafi sat close to him, her medicine chest at her feet, her back straight as a rule. Asaf and Tia had been woken from their lodgings. Both pairs of eyes were swollen — but both of them sat straighter than anyone. Tia’s hair was still bound in the hurried knot of someone who had dressed in the dark.

Lu Zhu stood before the table, first repeating the courier’s news, exactly as it had come: the rebellion, the banners, the vanguard on the road. Then he pushed the defense map to the middle of the table.

”The rebels’ vanguard is three thousand cavalry, light, on the official road.” He said. ”To reach the new capital — fast, four days; slow, six. The main force of thirty thousand is two days behind that. Which is to say —” his charcoal tapped twice on the map, ”within six days, the new capital must stand as a city that can hold. Within eight days, a city that cannot be broken.”

No one in the room spoke. Only the lamp’s wick in the corner popped once.

The numbers settled over the room the way a cold draft settles over a fire: nothing moved, but everything cooled by a degree. Six days. Eight days. The men who had spent the past years counting in seasons heard, for the first time, counting in hours.

”What about the court’s troops?” Asaf asked.

”The pharaoh is already summoning them.” The Overseer said. ”The garrisons of the north, the river fleet of the east — all moving this way. But the fastest of them will take half a month. For half a month, the new capital is an isolated city.”

”Half a month.” Lu Zhu said. ”Then we hold for half a month.”

He straightened, his gaze moving across every face in the room — slowly, like a man counting an army. The counting took a long time; he looked at each man and woman twice.

”From today, the new capital’s work all turns to ’holding.’ I assign the tasks. Each person takes his, and goes — no discussion.”

Everyone in the room sat straighter.

”Kamon.” Lu Zhu said.

”Here.” Kamon stood. He had not slept all night; his eyes were red — but he stood as straight as the walls he had built.

”The city wall is yours, entirely. The guild’s craftsmen — all of them, up onto the wall. First finish the re-ramming of the south stretch of the west wall; then go over the whole city wall from end to end — every stretch, every foot: knock it, listen to it. Hollow — fill it. Cracked — seal it. Short — raise it. Within six days, not one place on the new capital’s wall may be openable by a ram.”

Kamon listened, and did not answer at once. He bent, picked up the stone chisel, and weighed it in his palm — the old, familiar balance of the tool, like weighing a well-fitted weapon.

The chisel had been in his hand for twenty years, through a thousand inspections; the weighing was his way of saying that this time, the inspections were a matter of life. He had spent his life making walls that looked right; the next six days he would spend making walls that were right, down to the last hand-breadth — and the chisel in his palm would be the judge.

”Understood.” Kamon said. He paused, and added: ”The works’ crews — I’ll make the shifts tonight. Three shifts, round the clock. Men rest; the hammers don’t.”

Lu Zhu circled the south gate on the map, pressing the charcoal down hard.

”Meri.”

Meri stood. He still gripped the small notebook, and for a moment his fingers moved over the dog-eared fold as if they could read the numbers through the paper.

”The grain is yours, entirely. The eleven granaries — count them all, seal them. The grain in the country granaries outside the city — bring in all that can be brought; what cannot be brought, hide in place — don’t leave it for the rebels. And —” Lu Zhu marked a position on the map, ”the emergency grain sheds — expand at once. Stock at twice the city’s population. The sheds need no elegance: shelter from rain, damp-proofing, room for grain. Standing within three days.”

”Three days.” Meri opened the notebook and glanced at it. ”Enough. I’ve had the shed site picked out for a while — the empty ground west of the official warehouses. The shed plans were drawn back when the sample granary was built.”

The notebook’s dog-eared pages were Meri’s whole mind on paper: every figure that mattered to the city’s grain, kept at the fold where his thumb always rested. The plans for the emergency sheds had been drawn, folded, and carried for years — waiting, as Meri had always quietly assumed they would, for a day when the granaries alone would not be enough. The day had come; the plans came out of the fold.

”Imset.”

Imset sat at the far edge; only now did he raise his eyes. His pace was still unhurried: ”Say it.”

”The field hospital is yours, entirely. The site, the building, the medicines — your call. The four posts’ people — all of them onto a wartime footing. The wounded’s route, from the wall to the hospital — how it runs shortest, work it out now.”

”Good.” Imset said. ”The hospital site — the empty ground three hundred paces inside the wall. Carrying a wounded man, a fast walk, half the time of a cup of tea. Building: timber frames and reed matting, half a day a room. Medicines: the main hall’s whole stock drawn out; wound medicines first.”

He answered as if the plan had been waiting in his breast for years — and it had. The field hospital’s design had been in his mind since the western clinic’s hut had gone up, the same principles scaled to a city. The distance, the time, the materials — all worked out long ago, in the quiet hours of the pharmacy, against a day he had hoped would never come. The day had come; the plan stepped forward.

”Shafi.”

Shafi stood. Her face was taut; her voice was steady: ”Here.”

”The medicine accounts are yours, entirely. The current stock, the daily consumption, the resupply cycle — list them all. Whatever is short — make a list. And —” Lu Zhu paused, ”the western clinic’s prescriptions — you have the copies. The field hospital’s medicines follow that standard.”

”I have them.” Shafi said. ”The copy A-Shi made before he left — I’ve kept it all along.”

The copy had come west with A-Shi, and east again, in the same roll, wrapped in the same oilcloth. She had kept it through the clinic’s building, through the battle’s wounded, through the move to the field hospital’s planning. The standard was the standard because it had been tested — in the desert, on soldiers, in the heat. The field hospital would follow it.

”Meru.”

Meru was knocking his pipe out on his boot sole, one dull tap, then another. At his name, he tucked the pipe into his belt and stood.

”The trade routes are yours, entirely. Three lines: one to the West Bank, for grain and medicine; one to the river port of the east, to meet the fleet’s supplies; one held in reserve, off the official road, by the small paths. For each line — route, hands, travel time: give me a map. And —” Lu Zhu said, ”the rebels have cut the grain road of Upper Egypt. The new capital’s grain can no longer rely on the south alone. The roads of the north, the east, and the west — all must be open.”

”I’ll see to it at once.” Meru said. ”The caravan hands — organized into crews tonight. Within three days, all three lines running.”

The three lines were Meru’s whole trade, redrawn in a single night’s thinking. The roads that had once carried profit would now carry survival. A merchant who could not see the difference between the two kinds of cargo had no business in a siege. The pipe in his belt, unlit, would stay unlit for the next few days; there was no time for smoking between the loading and the road.

”Asaf, Tia.”

The two of them stood together. Asaf’s face still carried the exhaustion of the flight — but his eyes were hard.

”The law is yours, entirely.” Lu Zhu said. ”In wartime — the conscription of labor, of materials, of grain — rules must be set. The government may not seize a man on a word; the rich may not hoard grain while the poor starve. How to conscript, how much, whether wages are paid, how the grain is shared — write it into articles, hand them to the Overseer, submit them to the pharaoh. A first draft within three days.”

Asaf and Tia looked at each other. Tia said: ”The corvée ledgers we brought out — they’ll serve us exactly. Every abuse of the old system, recorded, item by item. The new rules — write them as their opposite.”

The ledgers had crossed the river in a rattan case, wrapped against the damp, guarded by two people who had not slept for two nights. They were about to do the work they had been carried for. The old system’s abuses, item by item, would become the new system’s articles — each article the exact opposite of an abuse, the way a building is the opposite of a collapse. Asaf and Tia had not known, on the river, what the ledgers would be used for. Now they knew.

”Good.” Lu Zhu said.

He looked at last at the Overseer: ”The official side is yours, entirely. The palace’s orders, the military office’s documents, the soldiers on the wall — you go and meet them. Our craftsmen can repair walls — but there must be soldiers on the wallheads.”

The Overseer nodded: ”I’ll go to the palace at dawn. The soldiers — I’ll wheedle them out.”

The tasks distributed, the sky was fully light.

Lu Zhu set the charcoal down on the map, and said one last thing:

”From today — every wall we repair, every granary we fill, every room we build — is no longer for the sake of living. It is so that the people of the new capital can live, and see the light of day again.”

No one answered. But every step that went out of the room was heavier than the step that had come in — and firmer.

Kamon went out first. After two steps he turned his head: ”Lu Zhu — give me the south gate. Until the south gate is repaired, I don’t come down from the wall.”

The claim on the south gate was Kamon’s whole character in one sentence. He had asked for the hardest point, the one the enemy would strike first, and he had set his own condition — his own body, on the wall, until the work was done. He did not wait for an answer; he was already walking, and the sentence was not a request but a vow.

Meri tucked the small notebook into his breast as he went out. He said nothing — only walked quickly in the direction of the official warehouse, his heels coming down hard on the packed earth of the courtyard.

Imset paused at the door. He looked back at Lu Zhu once, and said: ”You hand me the hospital — I hand you an account with not one life missing.”

The account was Imset’s own standard, the one he had held in the healing hall for years. Every patient entered, every dose recorded, every outcome accounted for. In wartime the standard did not change — it became the whole of the law. The hospital’s ledger would be kept the way the granary’s was kept: exact, and beyond argument.

Shafi followed her teacher, saying nothing, only tightening the strap of her medicine chest as she crossed the threshold.

Meru left last. At the threshold he knocked his pipe out, one more time, as if sealing the trade: ”The trade routes — count on me. If the day truly comes when the grain runs out, I, Meru, will carry the last sack of grain into the city myself.” He finished, and walked off toward the goods yard without looking back.

In the assembly hall remained only Asaf, Tia, and the Overseer.

”We’ll go too.” Asaf said. ”The law’s first draft — three days. No, two. Two days, and I’ll give it to you.”

”Two days is not the rush.” Lu Zhu said. ”The rush is the two days without any rules. First print a one-page urgent edition: labor conscripted, wages paid; grain conscripted, by household. Paste those two up first. The details come after.”

”Good.” Tia said. She picked up the charcoal and began writing at once, there at the table, her wrist steady above the sheet. Lu Zhu watched her posture as she wrote — and remembered, from the West Bank years, this girl at her lamp, checking corvée data. The brush was the same brush; the person was the same person; only the words had changed — from ”settling old accounts” to ”setting new rules.”

The change in the words had taken three years, and the war had compressed it into three days. The girl who had once counted the old system’s abuses, line by line, was now writing the new system’s first articles, line by line, in the same careful hand. The brush moved steadily. The two men watching — Asaf, who had carried the ledgers out of Thebes, and Lu Zhu, who had watched her count — knew that the old accounts were being settled, at last, in the only currency that counted.

The others gone, Lu Zhu hung the defense map back on the wall. Kamon had not left; he stood at the door, waiting.

”Are you afraid?” Kamon asked. In all the years the two of them had known each other, this was the first time the question had been asked.

”Afraid.” Lu Zhu said. ”Not afraid of their numbers — afraid of our preparation. Have all the places that should be repaired been repaired? Have all the accounts that should be calculated been calculated?” He paused. ”And when the fear is done — we go on working.”

The confession was the truest thing Lu Zhu had said in months. The fear was not of the enemy — it was of the gap between what the city needed and what it had, the gap that all the building years could not quite close. The fear had a use; it was what kept the lists going, the numbers adding, the plans revising. He had learned, long ago, to let the fear do its work and then go on.

”So am I.” Kamon said. ”All my life, I’ve feared poverty, feared having no work, feared my son having no food. What I fear most now — is the people of this city having believed in us for nothing.”

The two men stood at the door, watching the sky brighten, bit by bit — the dark draining out of it the way water drains out of a shallow pool, slowly, then all at once.

Kamon’s fear was the older, deeper one — the fear of a man who had watched people trust him with their lives’ work, their houses, their sons, and had never once failed them. The wall that was about to be tested was made of that trust as much as of rammed earth; if it failed, the trust failed with it, and the failure would outlast the siege. He said the fear aloud because saying it made it smaller, and he meant to stand on the wall with it small.

”Let’s go.” Lu Zhu said. ”To work.”

As the sky was fully light, the craftsmen’s village stirred.

Kamon called the whole guild to the material yard — a dark mass of men filling half the yard, hammers and trowels still in their hands from the evening before. He stood on a block of dressed stone, his voice not loud, but every word striking the ground:

”Thebes has rebelled. The rebels are coming north. The new capital’s wall has a hollow stretch. From today — all craftsmen on the works form three shifts. One shift on the wall, one preparing materials, one resting. Round and round. Men rest; the hammers don’t.”

No one in the crowd spoke. A man in front shifted his weight from one foot to the other; behind him, someone set down a bucket, and the sound of it landing was loud in the quiet. After a moment, a young craftsman raised his hand: ”How are the wages handled?”

”Paid as usual.” Kamon said. ”The guild’s accounts — not a copper short.”

The question about wages had been asked the way a man tests the ground before stepping: not because he doubted the answer, but because he wanted to hear it said. The answer settled the yard the way a well-laid course settles a wall — and the men shifted, almost imperceptibly, from listeners to workers. The work had begun.

”Then why ask about wages.” An old master beside him tucked his pipe into his belt. ”Guard your own city, repair your own wall — a matter of plain justice.”

”Well said.” Kamon said. ”All of you, go eat. When you’ve eaten — up onto the wall.”

Under the west wall, the re-ramming’s finishing work had been completed through the night. Kamon took two old masters and, starting from the south gate, went along the city wall, stretch by stretch. They knocked the wall and listened. Where the wall was solid, the knock came back ”thump, thump,” like striking a drumhead; where it was hollow, ”hollow, hollow,” like striking an empty jar. Every hollow sound earned a white-chalk mark. In a single day, the whole city wall collected thirty-seven marks.

The knocking was Kamon’s oldest craft, older than the guild, older than the new capital: a wall’s truth was in its sound, and a man who had listened to walls for thirty years could hear a hollow at fifty paces. He did not knock at random. His ear went to the joins first, where a wall lies the most; then to the mid-heights, where the rain finds its way in; then to the foot, where the ground works against the brick. The ”thump” of solid earth and the ”hollow” of an empty layer were as different to him as two voices, and he answered each one as it spoke. He walked the circuit twice, the first time fast, the second slow; the second pass found the three pits in the base that the first had missed. The thirty-seven marks on the wall were the wall’s own confession, written in chalk, and each one would be answered.

”Thirty-seven places.” Kamon reported to Lu Zhu. ”Some are rammed-layer hollows, some are cracks, and three — the wall’s base has been washed into small pits by rain.”

”Repair them all.” Lu Zhu said. ”Start with the two sides of the south gate. The rebels come from the south; the south wall takes the first blows.”

That noon, scaffolding went up on both sides of the south gate. The craftsmen climbed with their mortar buckets and ramming hammers; the clatter of work sounded in one dense stretch, so loud that the sellers in the market half a street away raised their voices to be heard.

The three-shift organization, Kamon completed that night. Three hundred-odd craftsmen, divided by trade: two wall-building crews, two ramming crews, one carpentry crew, one materials crew. Each crew divided into three shifts — one working, one waiting, one resting. At the handover between shifts, the work in hand did not stop: the men changed; the tools did not.

The handover rule — men change, tools don’t — had been Kamon’s own addition, and it was the system’s heart. A hammer that never stops falling does more work than a man who never stops swinging. The three shifts were built around the tool’s continuity. The men grumbled at first, the way working men grumble at any new order; by the second day, they had stopped grumbling, because the wall was visibly rising and the grumbling had nowhere to stand.

”Tired?” Someone asked a rammed-earth worker coming off the night shift.

”Tired.” The man grinned. ”But when I think that this stretch of wall I’m ramming will be stopping their battering-ram in a few days — I’m not tired.”

The wallheads on both sides of the south gate were raised two feet. The new mud-bricks held more straw reinforcement, rammed even denser than what lay beneath. The crenellations were cut fresh — shoulder-high, lower outside, higher inside. These were the dimensions the western line had paid for with lives; Kamon had seen the dimensions in Seb’s drawings, in letters, and had built to them.

The dimensions had crossed the desert in letters and drawings. The western line’s dead had paid for them in the first battles — the shoulder-high crenellation that hid a man’s face, the outer-low inner-high cut that gave the arrows their angle. Kamon had built them into the new capital’s walls without a word to anyone; the walls did not need to know where their measurements came from.

”The south gate’s passage — needs an inner wall.” Kamon said to Lu Zhu. ”However thick the gate planks, a ram can break them. Build a chest-high low wall inside the passage; people pass on both sides; horses cannot enter.”

”And outside the gate?”

”Two ditches.” Kamon said. ”One straight before the gate, one slanted, staggered. The ram-cart must turn before it reaches the gate — and the turning point is exactly where the arrows from the wall can reach.”

The design was the same geometry that had stopped the Libyans at Date-Grove — the staggered stakes, the turning point in the archers’ range. Now it was translated to a city gate. The village had taught the city its defenses, and the city, learning, had made them larger. The ram-cart that reached the new capital’s gate would find the same answer the riders had found at the ditch: slow at the turn, and the arrows come.

Lu Zhu nodded, and marked the points, stroke by stroke, on the defense map: ”The south gate is the first thing thirty thousand men will see. Let it look ugly. Let thirty thousand men think twice.”

Passing townsfolk stopped to watch — and watching, rolled up their sleeves.

”Need men to carry earth?” A vegetable seller asked, setting his empty baskets down against the wall’s foot. ”I’ve sold my greens. I still have strength in my arms.”

”We need them.” The foreman in charge said. ”Carry to the wall’s foot. The old carry small baskets; the strong carry big ones.”

By evening, several hundred townsfolk had gathered under the wall — carrying earth, passing materials, fetching water, more numerous than the craftsmen. A woman went from man to man with her water jar, filling bowls, her shawl slipping off one shoulder and staying there; children carried stacks of mud-bricks, two steps and a rest, letting no one take them over. The dust of the work rose and settled on them all alike, old and young, until no one could tell who had come to help and who had come to watch.

”This city,” an old woman handed her water jar to a young craftsman, ”is everyone’s. We put our strength into building it; we put our strength into holding it too.”

The townsfolk who had come to watch had not planned to stay — and had stayed, one by one. The wall was theirs, the work was theirs, and the water jar was the smallest thing they could carry. The foreman’s system of small baskets and big baskets sorted the crowd into a working line without a word of argument; the old woman’s sentence, handed over with the jar, was the city’s own charter, spoken by its oldest voice.

The matter of the soldiers, the Overseer wheedled at the palace for a whole day.

The new capital’s garrison was small to begin with. The two battalions stationed in the city numbered, at full strength, barely a thousand — and some had to be sent out to the two watch posts beyond the walls. The Overseer ground through the military office, ground through the palace, ground back through the military office, and finally brought back one sentence. The pharaoh had approved: three hundred men from the palace guard were to be transferred, to be placed under Kamon’s command on the walls. Added to the existing strength: fourteen hundred men.

The day of wheedling had been the Overseer’s hardest day in office. He had argued with clerks who argued with captains, and the argument had been about numbers the whole way — a hundred here, a company there — until the palace had finally let go of three hundred. The official who had once been able to quote the merit roll at his judges had learned, in one day, that the only roll that mattered now was the garrison roll.

”Fourteen hundred, holding against thirty thousand attacking.” The Overseer said the sentence to Lu Zhu, and his own voice wavered as he said it.

”Not enough.” Lu Zhu said.

”The pharaoh says the other troops are all pressed on the north and the east. Those moving toward the new capital are already on the road.” The Overseer said. ”Half a month. Get through half a month, and everything is talkable.”

Lu Zhu did not answer. He walked to the defense map and tapped the south gate with his finger, then three points inside the city — the granaries, the hospital site, the assembly hall.

”Half a month.” Lu Zhu repeated. ”Fourteen hundred, holding for half a month. Not enough soldiers — fill it with the wall. Not enough wall — fill it with the people. The people of the new capital — every one of them is a soldier.”

That evening, a new thing appeared under the city wall: two long rows of wooden racks, filled with knives, spears, and bows. These were the old weapons of the official armory, which the Overseer had had his men dig out from the storerooms where they had lain folded in oiled cloth. Kamon had them carried up onto the wall and tried, one by one. Those that worked stayed; those that did not went back to the blacksmith’s to be reforged.

The armory’s old weapons had lain in their racks for years, oiled and forgotten — the city’s peacetime had had no use for them. The war had woken them the way it woke everything else. The knives were tried, the spears balanced, the bows strung and tested. The ones that failed went to the smith’s fire; the ones that passed went up onto the wall. The racks under the wall were the city’s first arsenal, and the line of townsfolk who gathered before them was the city’s first army.

”Those who know how to use them stand on the wallheads; those who don’t — learn.” Kamon stood before the racks and said. ”Three days — all of you ready.”

A crowd of able-bodied young men gathered, took weapons, some practicing, some timid. One young man gripped a knife, his hand shaking badly; an old soldier nearby could not stand it, pulled the knife out of his hand, and demonstrated a slash: ”A knife is a dead thing; the man is alive. The more you shake, the less it obeys. Steady.”

The old soldier’s demonstration was the first lesson of the three days — and the young man, gripping the knife again, found that the lesson had gone into his hand before it reached his head: the grip firmer, the tremor smaller. He tried twice more, and on the third try the knife behaved. The old soldier watched, nodded, and handed the knife back without a word; the craft had passed.

The young man tried twice; on the third try, his hand stopped shaking. He smiled at the old soldier and said: ”Uncle — from now on I’ll learn from you.”

”Done.” The old soldier said. ”Learn for three days; hold for half a month. A fair bargain.”

The emergency grain sheds broke ground the next day.

Meri’s chosen site was the empty ground west of the official warehouses. He took his granary workers through the layout, the stakes, the frames — walking the line himself, checking each stake with his eye before the first post went in. The sheds’ structure was simple: timber posts for the frame, crossbeams for the roof, reed matting for the cover, and around the sides a half-height mud-brick wall with ventilation holes. This kind of shed had been drawn in the granary plans — the West Bank’s transfer granaries, years ago, had been built exactly this way: quick to raise, good against damp, and dismantlable for reuse.

”Within ten days,” Meri told the granary workers, ”this empty ground holds twenty sheds. One shed holds a thousand hekat. Twenty sheds — twenty thousand hekat of emergency grain.”

”Twenty thousand hekat — where does so much grain come from?” A worker asked.

”The country granaries ship it in.” Meri said. ”Meru’s caravans are already on the road. What comes in — into the sheds first. Sheds full — then into the granaries.”

The first day, four sheds stood. The timber was leftover from the temple works; the reed matting was the warehouse’s stock; the mud-bricks were made overnight by the craftsmen’s village. The granary workers knew this work; they moved from line to stakes to frame in one chain, faster than building a house. Meri crouched and watched; wherever he saw something wrong, he went at it himself — taking the rammer, working the earth level with his own hands until the fault was gone. His hands knew the work before his mouth did: he would point at a stake, then walk to it and set it straight himself; he would watch a corner join, then kneel and re-pack it with his palms. The granary workers had seen the same crouch at the sample granary and at the branch granaries — the same hands, the same silence.

”The floor needs another half foot of height.” He pointed at a shed just framed. ”Don’t begrudge the work. Grain fears damp most of all; once damp comes up, twenty thousand hekat are ruined.”

The half foot of floor was the granary’s whole philosophy in a measurement. The damp that would ruin a thousand hekat came up from below. The floor was the only defense that never slept. The workers had heard the sentence before, at the sample granary, at the branch granaries, at the temple storehouses — and they had built the half foot into each one without being told twice. The shed frames rose, and the damp had no road in.

He paused, and said: ”And there is one thing more important than the sheds.”

”What?”

”Hiding.” Meri said. ”The eleven granaries are too big a target. When the rebels truly reach the wall, the first thing they look for is the grain. So, beyond the granaries, a portion of the grain must be hidden — in the people’s cellars. Fifty hekat to a household; two hundred households — ten thousand hekat. Scattered through the city; the rebels cannot find it; our people have it whenever they need it.”

”Hiding grain among the people?” A worker clicked his tongue. ”That method...”

Meri did not explain in a hurry. He crouched and drew two circles on the ground — a big one and a small one — with a line between them. The workers watched the dust drawing take shape, the way they had watched a hundred site sketches.

”This method, my teacher taught me.” Meri said. ”Grain in the granary is the enemy’s target. Grain in the people’s homes is the enemy’s thorn. A city full of grain — no one dares cut it off lightly.”

The two circles — the granary and the people — were Meri’s whole theory of storage in wartime. The granary invited the enemy’s first blow. The people’s cellars took the answer to a place the enemy could not reach. The line between the two circles was the signed agreement — the official grain in the people’s keeping, issued by head in war, doubled penalty for private use. The system was not trust; it was a contract, written by a man who had spent his life making contracts that held.

That afternoon, the ledger of hidden grain was made. Meri chose two hundred households with dry cellars, fifty hekat each, with a signed agreement: the grain belongs to the official granaries; in wartime it is issued by head; whoever moves it privately pays double. Not one of the chosen households hesitated. The grain carts moved in and out of the lanes from noon till dark. At the unloading, the neighbors all came out to lend a hand. The smell of the granary’s last year’s harvest filled the lanes like a promise.

”The granary puts its grain in our home,” an old man pressed his thumbprint to the agreement, ”because it trusts us. We have to be worthy of that trust.”

He turned at once and re-built his cellar mouth, adding a rain-board, and tested the fit twice before he was satisfied.

The field hospital’s foundation stakes went in on the third day.

Imset’s chosen site was a stretch of empty ground three hundred paces inside the wall. It had held leftover brick rubble from the temple works; Shafi had her people clear it for a day, the broken bricks carried off in baskets and stacked at the edges for reuse. The cleared ground lay flat and even, with a passage left on each side, east and west.

”The hospital has four rooms.” Imset stood on the ground, tracing the lines with his finger: ”One for wounds, one for the critical, one for the lightly injured, one for medicines. Four rooms around a square, an open yard in the middle. Wounded men come in from the south gate, first to the wound room, then sorted on. The flow — the same principle as the healing hall.”

He bent as he spoke, picked up a piece of broken brick, and pressed out the corners of the four sides. The bricks lay square and even; the outline of the four rooms was clear at a glance.

The four rooms’ arrangement had been worked out, like everything of Imset’s, in the order of the work. The wound room stood first, so that the fresh blood never passed through the quiet; the critical room next, where the sorted went; the light room, where the walking went. The medicines were set apart, so that the pharmacy’s calm was never disturbed by the yard’s noise. The brick corners on the ground were the whole hospital, in outline, and the men who dug the foundations would fill the outline with walls.

”The building?” Shafi asked.

”Timber frames, reed matting, mud-brick walls.” Imset said. ”Half a day a room. The timber is the temple works’ leftover; the matting is the warehouse’s stock. Three days — all four rooms standing.”

Shafi worked the sum in her head and wrote ”three days” in her notebook, underlining it once.

”And the medicines?”

Shafi already had the notebook out, the brush’s tip on the paper.

”The main hall’s stock — wound medicines first. Your accounts, to me tonight.”

”Tonight.” Shafi answered crisply, and tucked the notebook back into her belt.

Imset crouched again and drew a line across the middle of the yard: ”Wounded men come in — the critical carried to the left, the light walking on their own to the right. Two streams must not collide. If they collide, even the well will be squeezed into the wounded.”

The line across the yard was the hospital’s traffic law, drawn in the dust and soon to be drawn in the walking. Two streams, two directions, no crossing — the rule that kept a crowded hospital from becoming a second battlefield. The stretcher-bearers would learn the line with their feet; the walking wounded would learn it with their eyes; and the line, in the chaos of the first day, would be the one thing that stayed straight.

”Stretchers?” Shafi asked.

”Ten on the wall, five at the south gate, ten at the hospital.” Imset said. ”The stretcher bearers — drawn from the healing hall’s light patients, plus the pharmacy boys. Twenty to start. Carrying is a craft — drill it. From tomorrow, twice a day: one round trip, no more than half the time of a cup of tea.”

That afternoon, the hospital’s foundation was dug. Among the diggers were the healing hall’s pharmacy boys, craftsmen from the village, and several townsfolk who had been in line at the clinic that morning. When they heard the ground was for ”the place that saves people in war,” none of them left; they crouched and dug, and the iron of the picks rang against the packed earth in a steady rhythm.

”Here,” Shafi pointed at one stretch of ground, ”the medicine room’s floor is raised half a foot. Like our storeroom — against damp.”

The pharmacy boys answered and swung their ramming hammers. The thud of the ramming and the thud from the wall answered each other across the air, shaking the whole city with a low hum — the sound of a city hammering itself into readiness.

That night, Shafi submitted the medicine accounts. The account was written page by page: wound medicine, so many hekat; styptic cloth, so many rolls; splints, so many pairs; earthen jars for boiling medicine, so many — each item followed by the number of days it would last. Imset read to the end, his finger moving down the column, and added a line: ”The critical first; the light — reduced doses; save where you can.”

”That line,” he said, ”in wartime, is the life-preserving charm.”

The line had been added to every wartime prescription Imset had ever written, in every crisis the healing hall had faced. The heaviest wound gets the medicine first, because the medicine is always less than the need. The need must be spent where it saves. The charm was not magic — it was the oldest arithmetic of the sickroom, written where the panicked hand would see it.

On the fourth day, the four hospital rooms were all standing. Mud-brick walls, reed-mat roofs, the four rooms around a square, the yard in the middle paved with crushed stone. The stretcher crew’s first drill was held in the yard.

Twenty people, an old door plank for a stretcher, running from the south gate to the hospital, three round trips. The first trip was chaos; the ”wounded” on the plank — two baskets of stones — fell off twice. Imset stood at the edge, saying nothing, only counting the time on his fingers. The second trip steadied. The third: from the south gate to the hospital, less than half the time of a cup of tea. When the plank touched down in the yard’s shadow, the bearers did not set it on the ground but held it at carrying height, waiting. Imset nodded once — the smallest movement of his head, which the crew had learned to read better than a shout.

”Again.” Imset said. ”Drill until you can do it with your eyes closed, and not go wrong.”

The two baskets of stones had names, in the drill’s shorthand: the first was a man with a leg wound, the second a man with a belly wound. The plank’s bearers learned, trip by trip, that the baskets must not be jolted, must not be tilted, must reach the hospital’s shadow within the counted time. The drill’s chaos on the first trip had been the useful kind: it had shown the crew what the chaos of a real first day would be, and the second trip had carried the lesson.

Among the stretcher crew was a pharmacy boy who ran slowly and caught a basket’s edge on his knee; limping, he still meant to carry. Shafi pressed him down at the wall’s foot: ”Your leg is a wounded man now. Wrap yourself first, then carry others.” The boy went red, and obediently stretched out his leg. Shafi dressed it, her hands quick and light, and when the boy looked up, she was already tying the last knot.

”Remember,” Shafi said. ”The wartime hospital has one rule: you must stand yourself before you can support others.”

That night, the hospital’s medicine shelves held a row of wound medicines, a stack of styptic cloth, a pile of splints. Imset stood at the door, looking over the four rooms — the jars on the shelves, the cloth in its rolls, the splints in their ranks — and said to Shafi:

”Everything that should be prepared is prepared. The rest — is up to the sky.”

That night, Lu Zhu came to the hospital.

He looked through the four rooms one by one — the foundations, the ventilation holes, the heights of the medicine shelves, testing a shelf with his hand as if it were a wall. When the looking was done, he said to Imset: ”The same mold as our healing hall. Good.”

”The hospital is the healing hall’s son.” Imset said. ”The small one grows after the big one; it cannot go wrong.”

”Hands?” Lu Zhu asked.

”All four posts’ people, in place. The lightly sick among the townsfolk can help carry; the pharmacy boys can help apply medicine.” Imset paused. ”If war truly comes, the first day is the hardest. When the men panic and the blood runs, every rule is forgotten. So I wrote the rule most easily forgotten, on the wall.”

Lu Zhu followed his gaze. On the most visible stretch of the outer room’s mud-brick wall, four characters were written in charcoal:

”The critical first.”

”Wounded men are grain, too.” Imset said. ”Save the heaviest first — so the medicine in hand is not wasted.”

Lu Zhu nodded. As he left the hospital, he looked back once. The four small rooms stood with their lamps lit, quiet in the night — like four birds with folded wings.

Meru’s caravans came back on the fourth day.

The West Bank camel train brought the first batch of goods: medicines, lime, oilcloth — and the West Bank’s grain. Meru weighed the goods in the yard, noting them in his book as he weighed, the tally-stick click of his counting never stopping. The yard was busier than at New Year: the unloading hands trotted to and fro, the accountant’s abacus clacked. A dozen-odd camels, unloaded, blew hard at the trough; the camel bells rang in a jumble in the night wind. When the tally was done, he took the list to Lu Zhu.

”The West Bank grain — it can be shipped.” He said. ”Just slow. One trip, ten days. The east’s river fleet — has agreed to reserve supplies for the new capital; by the water route, it’s fast. The south...” He paused. ”The south road is cut.”

”Cut where?” Lu Zhu asked.

”North of Thebes — the three towns along the way, all taken by the rebels.” Meru said. ”The caravans cannot pass. Grain — not a single measure gets through.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He only let his eyes rest for a long while on the official road south of the defense map, tracing its line once with his fingertip before he answered.

”As expected,” he said. He stood before the map for a moment, then asked, suddenly: ”The road from the West Bank to the western line — is it still open?”

”Open.” Meru said. ”The western line’s supplies have never once been cut.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”The western road — leave it alone. That is our trump card.”

Meru nodded. He spread the half-unrolled goods list out again and added a few strokes in the blank space at the bottom. These were the numbers he had just worked out: the cargo of one western trip, the cargo of one eastern trip, how much the reserve line could carry in one run. When the strokes were done, he folded the list and tucked it into his breast, and patted the fold flat, a merchant’s habit.

He walked to the table and drew a rough map from his breast, spreading it flat: three lines, drawn in three colors of charcoal. One going west, marked ”grain, medicine”; one going east, marked ”fleet supplies”; one drawn in dashes, curving out around the city’s north, over a stretch of hills, marked ”reserve.”

”Three lines,” Meru said. ”The western, one trip in ten days; the eastern, one in five. The reserve — small paths, traveled only by night. If the day truly comes when the gates are ringed — it is the way in and out of the city.”

”The reserve’s travel time — calculated?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Calculated.” Meru said. ”By night, five days a round trip. Not enough for grain; enough for letters, for medicine.”

Lu Zhu looked at the rough map, and pressed it down beside the defense map. The two maps lay side by side — one of walls, one of roads. The walls guarded the city; the roads fed it.

”These two maps,” Lu Zhu said, ”are the new capital’s two breaths.”

The western line’s letter came back with the caravans on the fifth day.

The letter was from Horenheb — large characters, short lines, like the man himself. It had three paragraphs. The western line knew of Thebes’s news; the Libyans had not moved, and the camp had pulled back further — the west was stable for now. The last paragraph said:

”If the new capital needs it, the western line can send half its soldiers. The seven forts, four posts, and seven villages now stand on their own. Keep half to hold the border; send half to aid you. One word from you, and they come.”

Lu Zhu read the letter twice. He remembered, more than a year ago, Horenheb’s first letter — ”the western line needs works, needs men, needs methods.” Then, the west had been asking the new capital for aid. Now it was reversed: the west was asking the new capital whether it wanted men.

”Reply.” Lu Zhu said to the messenger. ”Tell him — the western line’s soldiers stay where they are for now. What the new capital needs is not soldiers; it is time. His holding the west line, keeping the Libyans from moving — that is the greatest help he can give the new capital. When the court’s troops arrive, and the west is needed — I will be the first to tell him.”

The messenger acknowledged. As he mounted, Lu Zhu called him back.

”Carry one more sentence.” Lu Zhu said. ”The western wall is the most solid wall in Egypt now. Do not dismantle it.”

The messenger rode west, vanishing into the dusk. Lu Zhu stood at the warehouse gate a while after the sound of the hooves had gone, looking at the western sky where the light was going.

He knew, in his heart, that Horenheb’s letter was more than a sentence of ”we can send troops.” It was a general who had spent half his life on the border, holding out, at the same time, the key to the country’s gate and the new capital’s life.

”A man like that,” he said, low, ”Egypt has few of. We must hold for him.”

That night, Kamon and Lu Zhu walked the city wall.

The two of them started from the south gate, stretch by stretch. Torches swayed in the wind, throwing their shadows on the wall — one long, one short. The sentries on the wallheads straightened at the sight of them, and the two men nodded as they passed, the way men nod to men on a night watch.

”The south gate’s two sides — finished tomorrow.” Kamon said as they walked. ”The inner wall of the gate passage — the day after. The two ditches — dug by the day after that.”

”The thirty-seven places?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Twenty-nine repaired.” Kamon said. ”The remaining eight are all on the north stretch. The north won’t be attacked — it goes last.”

Lu Zhu stopped. He crouched, and by the torchlight, looked at the wall base beneath his feet, running his palm along the lowest course of brick as if the wall could answer him.

”No.” Lu Zhu said. ”The north stretch has to be repaired first too. The rebels did not come only by the south road. If they circle around — the north stretch is the soft spot.”

Kamon thought, and said: ”Then I’ll split half the ramming crew off. The south gate repairs as planned; the north stretch opens too.”

”Enough hands?”

”Enough.” Kamon said. ”If not enough, I’ll borrow.”

”Borrow from whom?” Lu Zhu asked.

Kamon planted the torch in a crenellation; the firelight lit his face, bright, then dark.

”From the whole city’s people.” Kamon said. ”These days, people are waiting under the wall for work every day. The line can’t be counted.”

Lu Zhu said nothing more. He stood on the wall, looking south. The night to the south lay heavy and black; in the direction of the official road, nothing could be seen — only darkness where the road was, and the dark that had no end.

”Soon,” he said. ”Within these two days.”

Asaf and Tia’s articles were drafted on the fifth day.

Those days, they barely left their room. The table was spread with the corvée ledgers brought from Thebes — item by item, the blood-accounts of the old system. Tia wrote the articles against the ledgers — wrote one article, turned one page, her brush moving without pause. The lamp burned low and was trimmed; the ink stone was ground again; outside, the city’s night sounds came and went — a dog, a cart, the watch’s call. Inside, there was only the brush and the page. Asaf watched from the side; wherever he found something wrong, he scored the sheepskin’s edge lightly with a fingernail, and Tia would look, correct, and go on — until the old ledger’s edge was scored like a tally stick.

The draft lay on the assembly hall’s table, a thick stack. Tia read the articles one by one. Wartime labor — conscript within the city first, then the suburbs. Labor conscripted, wages paid, settled by the day. Materials conscripted, material prices paid, by IOU. Grain conscripted by household — the rich contribute more, the widowed and orphaned nothing. Whoever goes up on the wall, into the caravans, or stands the hospitals — his family’s rations come from the official granaries.

”These articles,” Tia said, ”are all copied from the underside of the old system. However the old system oppressed people — we write the opposite.”

Asaf added from beside her: ”The old system’s greatest disease was unpaid service. Unpaid corvée ruined the farming season and lost the people’s hearts. The first article of the new rules says it dead: labor conscripted, wages paid. If the court has no money — record it as debt, settled after the war.”

”Will anyone trust a recorded debt?” The Overseer asked.

”Another man’s record, no one trusts.” Asaf said. ”This record, I keep. Item by item, posted publicly. I, Asaf, kept the corvée accounts in Thebes for half my life — and never altered a single stroke.”

The Overseer read the draft through, and said: ”I’ll go to the palace tomorrow. These articles — the pharaoh should approve them. In wartime, the simpler the rules, the more they work.”

”And one more article.” Asaf said. ”The people must know these rules. Paste them at the city gates, at the market, at the granary gates. Hearts settled — the city stands.”

”Right.” Lu Zhu said. ”Rules are not hidden in offices. Pasted on walls, where everyone can see them — that is what makes them rules.”

The next day, on the walls beside both city gates, the new capital’s wartime notices went up. The characters on the notices were written large, the red seal at the bottom standing out like a mark of the sun; those who could read read them aloud to those who could not. The crowd pressed in, layer after layer, the front ranks craning their necks, the back ranks standing on tiptoe.

”Labor conscripted, wages paid?” An old man listened, half-doubting: ”When has the government ever paid?”

”This time it pays.” The clerk reading the notice said. ”The Master Builder and the Chief Overseer guarantee it jointly. If not paid — come to me.”

”Will coming to you help?”

The clerk did not take offense. He turned his body, letting the old man see clearly the red seal at the bottom of the notice, the clay of it still fresh in its frame.

”It helps.” He said. ”The notice carries the official seal. While the seal stands, the rules stand.”

The crowd dispersed. That day, the number of people coming to the wall to volunteer doubled — the line stretched past the market corner, and the registration table ran out of blank spaces before noon.

In the registration line were men carrying yokes, men driving donkey carts, men just in from the fields with the dust of the furrows still on their ankles. The registrar could not keep up; Asaf took the brush himself. He wrote the names slowly, stroke by stroke, as if writing some weighty document, and each name he wrote he read back once before it went down.

”Are you on labor or grain?” He asked an old man of about fifty.

”Both.” The old man said. ”If I can carry, I carry; if I can’t carry, I keep the night watch. This old rack of bones — it still has its uses.”

Asaf wrote his name into the register. As the brush’s tip touched the paper, he remembered the conscripted farmers of Thebes, in those years — then, they had been dragged in, brought weeping, their wives following the carts to the village edge. Now, the people came of their own accord, and the register filled in silence, name after name.

”This time,” he said, low, ”it is different after all.”

The refugees brought news of the city of Thebes. An old clerk who had fled Thebes found the Overseer and told him one thing. After the chief officiant returned to Thebes, he had not entered the old temple. He had stood at the city gate and said one sentence to the gate soldiers: ”Thebes’s gates can block people. They cannot block the sun.” That same night, the officiant had been ”invited away” by Nekhem’s people, and locked in the old temple’s rear courtyard.

”Is he still alive?” The Overseer asked.

”Alive.” The old clerk said. ”Just unable to get out. They say the High Priest went to see him in person. What was said, no one knows.”

Lu Zhu listened, and was silent for a long while. He remembered the morning the officiant left, standing at the city gate, saying: ”The new temple’s voice — I will carry it to Thebes for you.”

He had carried the voice there. Only the city gate had not let the voice out.

”The officiant,” Lu Zhu said, ”is a man who truly believes in the god. A man who truly believes — his body can be held. The god cannot.”

The old clerk did not understand; he only nodded. In his heart he was thinking another thing: in the city of Thebes, the men who still dared to speak the two characters ”sun” — were probably only the priest locked in that rear courtyard.

The able-bodied young men organized themselves into crews. The wall-holders, the grain-carriers, the stretcher-bearers, the patrols — each had its own crew, each crew its own corner of the yard. The organizing was done at the craftsmen’s village material yard; the roster was made by Asaf, one name, one thumbprint, the pad of ink passed down the line of hands. The blacksmith’s shop at the city’s east clattered forging arrowheads all night without stopping; the firelight through the door opened and closed with the bellows. The women of the south gathered at the lane mouths, tearing old cloth into strips and rolling bandages, the strips piling up in the baskets between them. The children of the north carried buckets, hauling river-flat pebbles up onto the wallheads, bucket by bucket. Those were for the defenders — stones can strike the enemy too.

A blacksmith had set aside all his shop’s other work, forging arrowheads exclusively. His wife worried for him. She said the food had gone cold. He did not look up, the hammer rising and falling over the iron: ”The enemy’s arrows will go cold faster than my food.” His wife said nothing more, kept the food warm by the furnace, and went herself to the lane mouth to roll bandages.

Among the pebble-carrying children was Old Master Qu’s young apprentice. He carried the most — three trips a day, a bucket a trip, the pebbles clacking against the sides as he climbed the ramp. Someone teased him: ”Your teacher taught you the chisel, and you don’t use it — carrying stones instead?” He wiped his sweat: ”My teacher said — in war, stones are more useful than chisels. A stone on the wallhead can save a life.”

Old Master Qu had not been idle these days either. He could not climb the wall — his legs were done — so he squatted at the material yard every day, sharpening the craftsmen’s dulled chisels and hammers, one by one, the whetstone singing against the steel. Each one sharpened, set aside. He said: ”My craft is half on the temple, and half here. The walls must be held — and the tools must be sharp.”

The new capital, overnight, had turned from a city that built temples into a city preparing for war.

That evening, Lu Zhu met Asaf in the rear courtyard of the official warehouse.

Asaf had just sent off the urgent-edition notice; he sat on the stone bench in the courtyard, gnawing a cold flatbread. At the sight of Lu Zhu, he set the bread down: ”Keep me company for a while.”

Lu Zhu sat down across from him. The two men were silent for a moment in the dark, the sound of the wall’s ramming reaching them faintly through the streets.

”I spent half my life in Thebes.” Asaf spoke first. ”I watched the old nobles oppress the people. I watched the temple enclose its lands. I watched the corvée tear apart one household after another. Then I thought — this world can never be changed. Then I met you, and Tia — and I believed it could.”

”And now?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Now the war has come.” Asaf said. ”And I am not afraid, after all. Before, it was a fight in the dark — no one knew whether the one across from you was a man or a ghost. Now they come with open blades — open is something you can fight. When the fighting is done — then it can be changed.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He looked up at the sky; the stars were already out, small and hard above the city’s roofs.

”The day the war ends,” he said, ”the new capital’s rules will be Egypt’s rules. The articles you have written cannot be pasted only on this city’s walls — they must be pasted across the whole country.”

”I know.” Asaf said. ”That is why I have not lost a single page of the ledgers I brought out.”

The two men sat a while longer. The night wind cooled; Asaf finished the last bite of bread, stood, and said: ”I’ll go and see Tia. She won’t sleep again tonight.”

”Don’t burn yourselves out.” Lu Zhu said. ”The days ahead will be long.”

On the evening of the sixth day, Kamon came to Lu Zhu with the same sentence: the south gate’s two sides — finished.

Lu Zhu went up onto the south wall with him. The wall was new; the rammed layers dense; knocked, it answered ”thump, thump,” like striking a drumhead. The crenellations stood shoulder-high, one against the next, ranked even. The inner wall in the gate passage stood chest-high; people passed on both sides, sideways. Outside the gate, the two ditches — one deep, one shallow, staggered — lay like two black lines across the official road.

”Thirty-seven places,” Kamon said, ”all gone over by hand. The north stretch’s eight — repaired too.”

”The north ramming crew — borrowed?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Borrowed.” Kamon said. ”The townsfolk’s labor counted for more than the guild’s. Go up and see for yourself — that stretch of wall now answers solid wherever you knock.”

Lu Zhu nodded, saying nothing. He stood on the wallhead, looking south. In the direction of the official road, the sky’s edge burned with a stretch of sunset clouds — red going dark, like someone had spilled blood across the sky.

”Six days,” he said. ”Not a day wasted.”

Kamon looked too, for a while, and said: ”Let them come.”

The whole-city drill was held that night.

Three strikes of the bell. At the first, the able-bodied went up onto the wall; at the second, the women and children went down into the cellars; at the third, the hospital lit its lamps and the granaries were locked. From the first strike to everyone in position: less than half an incense stick.

Between the strikes, the city moved as one body. Doors opened and closed in sequence down each lane. The wall’s ladders took weight after weight. The cellar mouths swallowed the households’ old and young. The granary’s great lock turned twice under Meri’s hand. By the third strike, the streets were empty, and the only people moving were the ones whose posts were the wall.

The drill had been rehearsed three times in the six days, and each rehearsal had taught the city something about itself. The first night, the young men had run to the wall shouting and had to be hushed. The second, two cellar doors had stuck on their bolts. The third, a grandmother had refused to leave her hen. The fourth night, everything moved the way the plan had drawn it — the shouts were already hushed, the bolts already oiled, the hen already carried. The city had learned, in six days, to be silent in the dark.

Lu Zhu stood on the watchtower, counting the torches on the wall. One, two, ten, a hundred... the torches joined into one line, ringing the whole city — like a fire-dragon coiled on the wallheads.

The count had become his nightly ritual since the first drill: the torches were the city’s pulse, and the pulse, night by night, had grown steadier. The first night, a gap had yawned where the north stretch’s men had been slow; tonight, the line ran unbroken all the way around. The fire-dragon lay along the wallheads, and its breathing was the wind’s.

”Faster than yesterday.” The Overseer said beside him. ”Yesterday, two households’ cellar doors still had their bolts not properly thrown. Today — not one place out of order.”

”Six days of drill.” Lu Zhu said. ”If it were not orderly by now, there would be no excuse.”

The Overseer looked at the torches on the wall, lost in thought for a while.

”When the day truly comes,” the Overseer said, ”the drill will be worth half. The other half — depends on the people’s hearts.”

”The hearts have been drilled too.” Lu Zhu said. ”Since the notice went up, the volunteers have grown more numerous every day.”

The two men said nothing more. In the night, the new capital lay quiet — only the torches rustling softly in the wind.

After the drill dispersed, Lu Zhu did not return to the warehouse. He walked a circuit along the wall’s foot, looking at every crenellation with a man behind it, at every cellar door closed tight, at every stake driven deep. When he reached the south gate, he saw the young man who had learned the knife in the daylight, still standing in the shadow of the gate passage, his knife held square and steady.

The walk had become his own drill — the last circuit of every night, slower than the watch’s, his hand going out to touch a new course of brick, a freshly cut crenellation, a stake. The wall answered his hand the way a well-built wall answers every hand: solid, even, alive. At the south gate he found the young man with the knife, and the knife, and the steadying grip.

”Cold?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Not cold.” The young man said. ”It’s just — my heart is beating hard.”

”Everyone’s heart beats hard on the first night watch.” Lu Zhu said. ”Wait till dawn, when you see the sun rise as usual — the heart settles.”

The young man nodded, half-understanding, and gripped the knife a little tighter.

But the temple had not closed.

Every evening, townsfolk still went to sit in the square. The temple was still that temple; the light was still the full altar light; the voice was still the voice that carried. Someone sat on the steps, looking at the altar, and said: ”This temple standing here — the hearts settle. The sun shines every day; this city will be bright every day.”

The square’s evening gatherings had not been ordered or organized. They had simply continued, the way a habit continues — the same people on the same steps, watching the same light. The temple had been built for the ceremony’s day, and it had turned out to be built for every day. The light that had filled the altar at noon still filled it at dusk. The hearts that had been steadied by the ceremony were steadied again, each evening, by the same stone and the same sun.

Lu Zhu heard it, and said nothing. In his heart he was thinking another thing: the temple’s light and voice were for peacetime. But the temple’s walls, columns, and floor — rammed, raised, laid — in troubled times, they too could serve.

These evenings, Lu Zhu often went to stand in the square for a while. He said nothing either; he only watched the full altar light, watched the forty-eight columns ranking their shadows neatly outside the altar. One day he said to Kamon: ”This temple’s light — the same principle as the torches on the city wall. Where there is light, people do not panic.”

Kamon did not fully understand — but he remembered the words. Later, when he equipped the wall with torches, he doubled them, and set a small jar of oil beside every crenellation.

And at this hour, on the official road to the south, another ”city” was moving.

The rebels’ vanguard — three thousand cavalry — was hurrying day and night. The riders were all household troops the temple of Amun had raised over years, ram’s emblems painted on their armor. The general leading them was a man of about forty, his face wind-worn — a man Nekhem had promoted with his own hand. He gave orders from the saddle, his voice like a whip:

”Pass it down — once past the river bend, no one dismounts, no one unsaddles. Before dawn, the new capital’s walls must be in sight!”

The dispatch rider answered and went. The hoofbeats were dense as raindrops, striking the rammed earth of the official road.

Behind the general, a great banner snapped in the night wind. The ram’s head on it, stretched taut by the wind, showed every line of its carving. In his heart, the general knew: the High Priest did not want a city — he wanted the people of the new capital to stand on their walls, see this banner, and feel the cold seep into their hearts.

”The divine punishment did not come,” he said, low, as if encouraging himself. ”But the god’s soldiers have come.”

He remembered the High Priest’s last words in the hidden chamber before the army marched. The High Priest had said: do not rush to break the city. Surround it first. Let the people inside look out, every day, at the soldiers outside the wall, at the ram’s banner. The hearts of men — surround them half a month, and they will crack open from the inside.

”Half a month.” The general repeated the sentence in his saddle: ”I can afford to surround it.”

He looked back behind him. After the three thousand riders, the main force of thirty thousand was still on the road. When the main force arrived, this official road would become a rope drawn around the new capital’s throat.

That night, Lu Zhu slept very late.

He laid the defense map, the grain map, and the hospital map side by side on the table, and looked at them again and again, his fingertips tracing the lines the way a man reads a page by touch. Three maps, three battlefields. The wall was the battle’s edge; the grain was the battle’s life; the medicine was the battle’s base. The edge must not break; the life must not be cut; the base must not be pierced.

Six days had passed, just like that. The walls were repaired. The grain was hidden. The hospital stood. What remained was no longer the business of maps.

Suddenly, from outside, a burst of urgent hoofbeats. From far to near, stopping at the south gate.

Lu Zhu opened the door. A scout swung off his horse, running breathless:

”Master Builder! The south... on the official road to the south, smoke is rising!”

”What smoke?”

”Dust.” The scout said. ”Dust filling the sky. Cavalry — countless. The rebels’ vanguard has reached the river bend, thirty li to the south!”

Lu Zhu stood in the doorway, motionless. The night wind came from the south, carrying a faint smell of earth.

He looked back into the room. The three maps still lay on the table; the lamp still burned.

”Strike the bell,” he said. ”Warning for the whole city. Everything as rehearsed.”

The bell sounded in the second half of that night.

Dong, dong, dong — dong, dong, dong —

The bell spread from the watchtower at the city’s center, one stroke after another, waking the whole city from its sleep. No one panicked. These past days the drill had been run three times; everyone knew, in their bones, what to do at the sound of the bell. A mother who had carried her child down the cellar stairs on the first night of the drill carried him down the same stairs now, without a word, and the child, half-awake, knew to be quiet. The city had rehearsed not only its movements but its silences; the silences were the harder lesson.

The able-bodied went up onto the walls, weapons in hand, one by one. The women sent the old and the children down into the cellars, the door boards going down into their grooves with the practiced sound of the fourth night. In the hospital, Imset lit the lamps, one after another, down the line of rooms. At the granary gate, Meri pushed the last cart of grain into the shed, and turned the lock twice. On the wall, Kamon’s people were already in place; torch after torch was lit, the line of fire crawling around the wallheads. Each torch was lit from the one before it, so the fire ran along in a line, quick and even, like the signal fires of the western line — the same trick, a city’s width wider.

In the lanes under the wall, several hundred townsfolk made their way through the dark to their posts. No one carried a light; no one shouted; only the sound of footsteps, a soft rustling, like a river flowing in the night. Six days of drill; with eyes closed, they knew the way.

On the south gate’s tower, Kamon stood behind the crenellations, looking south. In the direction of the river bend, thirty li away, a faint line of gray-white showed at the sky’s edge — the dust raised by three thousand cavalry, brighter than the sky itself.

”They’re coming,” he said.

He turned and looked back into the city. Every lamp in the city was still burning.

In the dark places under the wall, several hundred pairs of eyes were also looking south. No one spoke. The wind came from the south, lifting and dropping the torches on the wallhead — like the whole city breathing.

Lu Zhu stood alone on the watchtower, half a charcoal stick in his hand. The charcoal traced aimless lines on the defense map — a few strokes no one could read. He knew that when dawn came tomorrow, the three thousand riders would appear at the end of the official road.

”Let them come,” he said, low. ”The new capital is waiting for them.”

In the medicine room, Shafi pasted the label — ”the critical first; the light — reduced doses” — onto the door frame. As she pasted it, her hand did not shake.

The label had been written by Imset’s hand and copied by hers. The pasting had been rehearsed in her mind a dozen times: the door frame, the exact height where a bloodied hand would see it, the paste smoothed to the edges. Her hand did not shake because the shaking had been spent, days ago, in the drills — the stretchers, the accounts, the chests counted and recounted. The label was the last thing the room needed. It went up, straight, and stayed.

Old Master Qu was at the material yard, fitting the last sharpened chisel into the rack. He raised his head to listen to the bell, listened for a while, and said to his young apprentice beside him: ”Go. Bring the door planks over, and block the yard’s mouth. This pile of tools — in wartime, it is worth a city.” The apprentice answered and went, carrying the planks.

The chisel in the rack was the last of a day’s work. Every dull edge in the yard had been ground bright again, each one fitted to its slot, each one ready for hands that might be called to the wall at any hour. Old Qu had spent the war days doing the one thing his legs still allowed: keeping the tools sharp. The bell had told him the sharpness was about to be needed.

Asaf and Tia went out with their bundle of articles. Their post was the stone room in the rear courtyard of the official warehouse — close to the granaries, close to the wall, close to the notice boards.

The stone room had been their workshop for five days: the ledgers on the table, the articles on the shelf, the ink stone by the lamp. It had been chosen because it was central — three hundred paces from the wall, two hundred from the granary, fifty from the notice board where the day’s rules would go up. They had slept there, in turns, and the room smelled of lamp oil and ink.

Meru was not in the city. When the bell sounded, he was leading the reserve line’s small team — seven men in all — along the small road north of the city, in the dark. He looked up, listened to the bell for a while, and urged: ”Hurry. Before dawn, we must be ten li out of the city.”

The seven men and their donkeys moved through the dark like a current: no lamps, no calls, the route memorized by daylight and felt by night. The bell behind them was the city’s voice; Meru did not look back at it — a man on a mission looks ahead, and the mission was the city’s second breath, outside the walls.

Lu Zhu did not go up onto the wall. He stood on the stone steps of the rear courtyard, listening to the bell roll across the sky above the city. One strike. Two. Three. Every stroke seemed to strike the walls he had repaired.

He remembered, from the night of the ceremony, the cheers of thirty-five hundred people in the square. He remembered, from the night of the western line’s completion, the line of white smoke joining across the sixteen towers. He remembered, from the West Bank years, the day the first low wall stood, when a child pressed his hand against it and said — from now on, no one burns anything.

”So many years of building,” he said, low, ”for the sake of today — that the wall can stand.”

The new capital’s walls, that night, were lit.

And thirty li to the south, at the river bend, the rebels’ vanguard was pressing slowly along the official road. The dust raised by three thousand cavalry covered half the sky. In the dust, a great banner showed and hid. On the banner was embroidered a ram’s head.

The ram’s head faced north.

Facing the new capital.

The same night, Thebes.

Nekhem stood on the highest terrace of the old temple, looking north. The city’s lamps had all been ordered out; only the torches on the walls still burned — a long dragon, coiled in the night.

”The vanguard has arrived,” the man in white reported, low, behind him.

Nekhem did not turn. He looked north for a long time, and said only one sentence: ”Set the people of the north moving too.”

The man in white withdrew. On the terrace remained Nekhem alone. He raised his hand; his fingertip moved slowly along the balustrade, again and again — as if feeling for the emblem that was not in his hand. Below him, the dark city lay quiet — its windows shut, its doors barred by his order. The old temple’s stones held the night’s cold, and the terrace wind carried the smell of the river. He had waited long for this night; the waiting had taught him patience, and patience had taught him how to strike.

The same night, farther north, a messenger crossed the border river in the dark. In his breast he carried a letter sealed with wax.

The letter was from Thebes. The man who would receive it was in Hatti.

No one knew what the letter said. But the messenger, mounting his horse by the river, looked back south once — and smiled.

The smile was very cold.

He knew that the letter in his breast was a fire. When the fire was lit, the north of Egypt would burn. When that day came, even if the people of the new capital held the south wall, they could not hold the north gate.

”Caught between two fires,” he said, low — and rode off into the northern night.
