Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 71: Chapter 7: The Acoustics of Sound — The Square Carries Every Voice

The matter of sound was not formally taken up until after the equinox.

That evening, the square’s paving had just been laid across one corner of its eastern end. Lu Zhu had a craftsman stand at the position of the altar and speak the most ordinary sentence in the world: ”Knocking off for today.” He had another craftsman stand at the western edge of the square to listen. The man at the west end cupped his ear and listened for a long while, then shouted back: ”Can’t hear a thing! The wind’s too strong!”

The exchange was heard by the whole crew, and a few of the younger craftsmen laughed — the laughter of men who had just watched their master attempt something plainly impossible. Lu Zhu did not seem discouraged. He had expected the wind to eat the voice; the test had not been meant to pass. It had been meant to measure: how far did an ordinary voice carry on this ground, in this wind? The answer was on the west end’s shouted reply, and it would go into the drawing.

Lu Zhu said nothing. He crouched on the newly laid stone and ran his hand along the joints. The slabs lay flat and even, fine sand packed into the seams; a footstep on them made no sound at all. But sound, walking across them, scattered.

The joints were the first clue. The sand in the seams swallowed the voice the way dry ground swallows rain — no bounce, no carry, nothing left for the next ear. A voice needed something to push against; this floor gave it nothing, and the wind took the rest. If he meant to make the square carry a voice two hundred paces, the floor would have to learn to push back.

”Ceremonies have always been relayed by voice.” An old craftsman said from nearby. ”The high priest speaks on the altar, and the relay callers pass it down, layer by layer. It’s been done that way for centuries. Master Builder — you’re not thinking of making the whole square hear it, are you?”

”Yes.” Lu Zhu said. ”That is exactly what I’m thinking.”

The old craftsman was struck dumb. Around him, the paving crews stopped their work and looked over.

That evening, when work was done, the craftsmen gathered in the work shed and made a story of the matter.

”Make the whole square hear it?” A paver took off his shoe and knocked the sand out of it. ”The altar is a good two hundred paces from the west end. Two hundred paces — you’d burst your throat shouting and it still wouldn’t carry. The Master Builder’s treating the human voice like a flood-horn.”

The paver’s objection was not mockery; it was the accumulated experience of a working life. Every man in the shed had shouted across workyards, across riverbanks, across wind — and every one of them knew the exact distance at which the human voice gives out. Two hundred paces was twice that distance. The men were not doubting the Master Builder’s cleverness; they were doubting the laws of nature, which they had never once seen him repeal.

”Don’t say that.” Another craftsman said. ”The man worked out the sun’s shadows to the inch. Maybe sound has its tricks too.”

”Shadows and sound — are they the same? A shadow you can see. Sound you can’t.”

”You can’t see the wind either. Would you say the wind has no tricks?”

The shed went back and forth, and no one convinced anyone. At last, an old craftsman who had worked on the old temple in Thebes spoke up. He moved a little closer to the fire and said: ”You’ve never seen the old temple’s inner sanctum. Speak in that hall, and the echo goes around three times — hum, hum, hum. The priests loved to speak in such places. One hum from the voice, and the men out front went weak at the knees; nobody could tell anymore whether it was a man’s voice or a god’s. I built temples for half my life; I’ve seen more echoes than any of you.”

He said it with the particular flatness of a man revealing a secret of the trade that had stopped being a secret the moment he spoke it — the old temple’s ”divine voice” was, in his telling, a matter of stone and plaster, no more miraculous than a well-built kiln. The younger craftsmen looked at one another; the older ones nodded slowly, remembering halls they had stood in where their own voices had come back to them, changed.

”And this echo,” someone asked, ”is it a good thing or a bad thing?”

”Depends who it serves.” The old craftsman said. ”Serve a god, and it’s an oracle. Serve the common people...” He paused. ”Never heard of that.”

Lu Zhu heard the story the next day. He was crouching on the altar platform drawing lines; he listened to the end, and his charcoal never stopped moving. He said only one thing: ”I mean to serve the common people.”

”Sound — you meet it every day.” Lu Zhu stood up and dusted the grit off his hands. ”Shout in a mountain hollow, and the echo turns three corners and comes back to you. Shout on flat ground, and the sound scatters to nothing. Why? Because sound bumps into walls and turns around; it runs along the lie of the land. The difference between a square and a mountain hollow — that’s all it is.”

He crouched and drew in the dust as he spoke: a line for the hollow’s walls, a line for the flat ground, little arrows for the sound bouncing and fading. The craftsmen gathered around the drawing the way they had gathered around the shadow-ring of the gnomon weeks before — the same posture, the same squint. What he was doing, they understood, was the same work as the light: not magic, but ground that had been taught to help.

”You mean... build walls for the sound?” A craftsman asked.

”Build a river for the sound.” Lu Zhu said.

The sentence went around the works for days.

The ”river” Lu Zhu meant was the handful of arcs he had pressed into the bottom layer of his drawing rolls.

Those arcs had been drawn on the night of the equinox. When clouds hide the sun, the light scatters — and scattered light, can it still keep its rules? He had drawn into the second half of the night and arrived at an idea: when the light fails, sound can take its place. Light has its road; sound has its road. Build both roads, and only then is this temple truly ”holy.”

He dug the arcs out of the drawing rolls, studied them by lamplight until midnight, and then spread out a fresh, large leather sheet and began to draw the square.

The square’s sound design had four parts.

The first: the altar was to be raised. Its platform had been set at three feet; he added two more, to five. A man speaking from a raised platform throws his voice over the crowd’s heads, and it lands in the mass of people beyond. The higher the platform, the farther the voice travels.

Raising the platform meant re-doing the optics account. Old Master Qu was the first to come running: ”The platform is two feet higher — will the northern column’s shadow still land on the calibration line at noon?” Lu Zhu pulled out the leather sheet and worked for the better part of half a watch. ”It will.” He said. ”The platform is higher, so the shadow falls on the platform — and the calibration line moves up with the platform. The relative positions do not change.” Old Qu was not satisfied; he worked it out himself in the sand for a long while, and finally said: ”Your arithmetic is careful. I believe it.”

The exchange was the old stonemason’s highest form of approval: not praise, but the surrender of his own sand-drawing. He had been the loudest doubter of the uneven columns; he had become, in the months since the equinox, the works’ second set of eyes on every figure — the first to demand the arithmetic, and the first to admit when it held. The platform’s two feet had cost him half a watch of scribbling in the sand, and he had come out of it believing — which was worth more than any amount of agreement.

The second: the square’s floor was to have a gradient. Not the kind a man could see at a glance — from the altar to the square’s outer edge, the floor dropped less than a foot for every hundred feet. Walking on it, a man felt almost nothing. But sound knew. When sound traveled along the ground and met that slight slope, it behaved like water entering a slow channel: it could not scatter, so it could only flow forward.

The third: the inner faces of the surrounding low walls were to be roughened. A newly finished wall face was too smooth; sound struck it and bounced straight back, and the returned sound tangled with the sound still coming, and the tangle became a humming echo. A rough face was different — sound struck it and was broken into a fine scatter, spread in every direction, a little of it everywhere, and nothing tangled.

The fourth, and most important: the columns. The forty-eight columns had not been raised for nothing. Sound coming off the altar struck the columns, and the columns blocked it, steered it, divided it. Whether the sound traveled forward or came bouncing back depended on whether the columns stood where they should. The forty-eight columns he had laid out had been calculated for shadows; now they had to be checked a second time — for sound.

When Lu Zhu showed the drawing to the Chief Overseer, the Overseer studied it for a long while, and asked: ”Of these four, the floor gradient must be the hardest, no?”

”Right.” Lu Zhu said. ”The slabs have to be laid on a slant — a slant a foot can’t feel, but sound can.”

”The paving crews will curse you.” The Overseer said.

”Let them curse.” Lu Zhu said. ”When they’re done cursing, they’ll still lay it.”

The Overseer was not wrong. For the first days of the paving work, the cursing never stopped.

The gradient was so gentle the eye could not see it. The pavers stretched their lines, and the line looked level; then Lu Zhu came over, set a copper pan of water on the slabs, and the water would not center — the surface was tilted. How much? Less than a foot for every hundred feet. The pavers pried up the slabs and relaid them, muttering: ”This isn’t paving. This is building a slope for the ants.”

Lu Zhu did not take offense. He handed the copper pan to the paving foreman: ”From now on, every ten slabs, check it with this. The water’s off by a hair — start over. The ants can’t feel this slope. Sound can.”

The pavers gritted their teeth and worked. On the fifth day, something curious happened: a few of them stayed after knock-off, crouched on the stretch they had laid, and spoke to one another in lowered voices — one at one end of the slope, one at the other. The one speaking suddenly shouted: ”I hear it! I hear it! I was whispering — and he heard it over there!”

The shout brought the whole crew running, and for the rest of the evening the pavers played with their own work like children with a new toy: one man at the altar end, one at the far edge, passing whispers back and forth across the empty square. The whispers were ordinary words — ”the lime’s in,” ”my wife’s stew,” ”pass the trowel” — and every one of them arrived whole. The men who had cursed the slope for five days stood on it now with the particular pride of men who have just built something that works, and works invisibly.

The slope had begun to eat sound.

From that day on, the cursing stopped. The pavers treated the copper pan like a treasure; when they knocked off, they wiped it clean, and called it ”the mirror that listens.”

The rough-surfacing of the low walls was led by Kamon personally.

Rough surfacing had its own craft. What Lu Zhu wanted was not the pitted, gouged roughness of poor work — it was a uniform, fine roughness, like the face of a whetstone, its bumps smaller than a grain of millet. Kamon tried for three days. The first day he used a coarse chisel; the pits were too big, and the sound struck them and echoed too heavily. The second day he used a grindstone; the face came out too smooth, and the work went back to where it had started. On the third day, he had the craftsmen use fine chisels, point by point — and the face they made felt faintly prickly to the hand, yet looked level.

”This is it.” Lu Zhu pressed his palm flat against it and held it there for a moment. ”Sound strikes this, and it breaks cleanly apart.”

The palm test had become the works’ standard of judgment for the rough face — not a ruler, but the hand, which knew the difference between too coarse and too fine the way a miller’s hand knows the difference between meal and flour. Kamon ran his own palm over the surface twice, and nodded; then he made the craftsmen who had done the work feel it too, so that their hands would remember what the standard felt like. From that day on, no craftsman finished a stretch of rough wall without pressing his palm flat against it, the way other men test a blade with a thumb.

Old Qu came to help for two days. He stood at the foot of the wall, tapping his chisel, muttering: ”I’ve spent a lifetime building smooth walls, and now here I am building rough ones. A wall has its own fate: some walls are made for the eye, some for the ear.” The laborers understood only dimly, but they knew this much: the two old masters watched this wall surface more closely than they had watched the foundation.

The columns’ sound was checked last.

Lu Zhu went with two craftsmen, on a windless day, column by column. The method was simple: one man stood on the altar and clacked two blocks of wood lightly together; the other walked a circuit around the columns listening. The clack was a dry, carrying sound; striking a column, its echo came back clear. Which column should block sound, which should steer it — the drawing had the answer for each. When they reached the third column of the outer ring’s east side, Lu Zhu had a wedge driven half an inch deeper under its base — just half an inch, and the echo came right.

The half inch was the same kind of correction that had been made for the shadows, and the craftsmen watching understood the continuity without being told: the columns had been measured once for the sun, and now again for the ear — two accounts, one set of stones. A column that served both was a column that had been raised for the city itself.

”A column’s shadow and a column’s sound,” Kamon said from beside him, ”neither of them may be wrong.”

”Shadows are for the sun.” Lu Zhu said. ”Sound is for the people.”

On the winter solstice, the square’s paving was only half done — and Lu Zhu stopped the work.

It was not a problem with the paving. He had an appointment: Old Calendar-Keeper, to check the sun’s shadow once more.

That day at noon, Old Calendar-Keeper, Old Master Qu, and Kamon all came. Old Calendar-Keeper carried his roll of old leather; Old Qu carried a flask of hot water, saying he was afraid of his hands freezing in the wind. The men stood on the altar platform and watched the tall northern column’s shadow.

When the shadow was at its shortest, it landed on the calibration line — dead on, not a hair off.

The check had been promised on the night of the equinox, and kept through a season: the shortest noon of the year, the same pole, the same line — and the sun, which keeps no promises and needs none, had arrived exactly where the drawings said it would. There was a particular satisfaction in a promise kept by something that does not know it is promising; the shadow lay on the line the way rain lies in a gutter, without effort, without ceremony, simply in the right place.

Old Calendar-Keeper looked from the roll to the shadow, and back, going through the solstice shadow lengths of every dynasty line by line. When he finished, he let out a long breath, and said: ”Centuries. And the sun’s rules are still the same rules.”

”And our columns are still the same columns.” Old Qu took up the thread. His pipe turned in his hand, unlit — the wind was too strong; lighting it would be wasted effort.

Lu Zhu said nothing. He crouched beside the calibration line and checked the shadow’s edge with his finger once more. Then he stood, and called out across the square:

”Can everyone hear me?”

The square was empty — only the wind. But that one call, Kamon at the far east end heard it, and the craftsman at the far west end heard it too.

”I hear you!” The west-end craftsman called back.

Lu Zhu nodded. The sound design was half done.

That winter, the works were busier than in any previous year.

The new capital’s winter brought no snow — but the wind was hard. The paving crews pulled their scarves up to their eyes, showing only their eyes; their breath vanished in the wind the instant it left their mouths. The slabs froze the hands; the hands cracked, and sand worked into the cracks, and every grip made a man draw a sharp breath. Lu Zhu had the cookhouse boil hot water daily; after every shift, each man got a bowl to soak his hands, and then a smear of sheep fat — the method the old squad leader had taught in his letter, the one the western soldiers used to get through winters in the sand.

The winter work was the first time the two lines of the book had truly worked as one: a trick learned in a desert fort, carried east in a letter, put to use on a temple square a season later. The men of the works had heard of the old squad leader only as a name in a dispatch; now his hand reached them every evening through the warm water and the fat, and the men who used it said, without quite knowing they were saying it, that the west was looking after them.

Two letters came from the western line that winter.

The first reported that Date-Grove’s wall had closed its circuit. Seb wrote that on the day the last stretch closed, the whole village went up on the wall, each person carrying one stone, and the gap was filled. After the closing, the Libyan scouts had come once, circled the outside for the better part of half a watch, dared not come down, and left. The second letter was about the joint defense — Horenheb was teaching the village watch duties; the tower posts were on a roster; the smoke-signal order had been drilled three times. Seb wrote: ”The general says, walls are dead; people are alive. The wall is closed. Now we have to teach the people how to hold it.”

Lu Zhu read the two letters twice each, the way he read everything from the western line — slowly, letting each sentence settle. The line he had helped to arm was now teaching itself to think: walls first, then the people behind the walls, then the drills that joined the two. It was the same order he had used in the new capital — build the shelter, then build the habits that keep it — and to see it taking root out in the sand, from letters he had written in this room, gave him a particular quiet satisfaction he did not put into words.

He kept both letters in the same chest as the western works drawings. In his reply, he wrote an extra passage: here in the new capital, the light is through, and the sound is nearly there. When both sides are done — find a day, and the whole city and the whole line will make their appearance together.

What that ”appearance” was, he already had in mind. The day had not yet come.

The real test came after the spring.

On the day the square’s paving was finished, Lu Zhu called every craftsman to the square. The Chief Overseer came too, with his officials. Meru happened to be in town delivering goods and came along. Even Shafi from the healing hall came — she had heard the news, and said she wanted to see with her own eyes how the ”river of sound” flowed.

The testing did not succeed at once.

The first trial came that same evening, as the paving was completed. Lu Zhu stood on the altar and spoke: the west end of the square heard him clearly — but the east end hummed, as if a hive of bees were buzzing around the ears. He came down and walked the east end, circuit after circuit, and stopped at last in front of a short stretch of low wall: the rough surfacing there had been added late, done in a hurry, the chisel points set too wide.

The men who had done that stretch of wall stood in silence as he examined it; they knew, without being told, which wall it was, and whose work. The Master Builder did not ask whose — the ledgers could answer that later. He knelt, ran his palm over the too-smooth face, and the verdict came out of his hand before it came out of his mouth.

He did not need a second listen to name the fault. The hum had told him the whole story: the sound had reached that wall and found no broken surface to scatter on, so it had piled up and gone around in circles, the way water piles behind a partial dam. The wall’s face was the last thing anyone would have blamed — it looked exactly like the rest — but sound did not look; sound touched, and the touch had found the difference.

”This stretch — redo it.” Lu Zhu said. ”The sound reaches here and doesn’t break apart. It smears.”

The craftsmen worked through the night. The next day they tried again: the east end’s buzzing was quieter — but the northwest corner had developed a new fault. The sound arrived there, turned a corner, and doubled over itself, like one man speaking twice. The investigation found that the two columns near that corner stood too close together; the sound wave struck them, bounced back, and bounced out again, tangling with itself.

”The columns can’t move.” Kamon said. ”Move one, and the sun’s account goes wrong.”

”They won’t move.” Lu Zhu said. He crouched between the two columns, traced something on the ground with his finger, and at last had a strip of rough stone half a foot wide laid between them. ”The sound gets here and steps on the brake. It won’t turn the corner anymore.”

The fix was small, and it was the kind of fix the works had come to recognize: not an alteration of what was built, but an addition that made what was built work as intended. The strip lay flat, half a foot wide, indistinguishable from the paving around it to any eye — but to the sound, it was a wall. The men who laid it understood, without being told, that they were doing to the square what a builder does to a door that swings too freely: adding a threshold.

With the rough-stone strip laid, the northwest corner’s doubled voice became one voice.

The third trial came on a fine clear day. Every craftsman on the works held his breath as Lu Zhu spoke from the altar. The day had been chosen for its wind: still, in the way spring mornings are still, the air holding its breath with the crowd. Not one man on the works spoke; the only sound was the wind in the columns, and the beat of the crowd’s own waiting.

”A god’s temple, roofed or roofless — the god is there.”

His voice was not loud. It was the volume of ordinary speech. No shouting, no drawn-out tones. The voice came out of him, ran down the platform’s slope, dropped into the square, and flowed along the unseen gradient of the floor, out in every direction.

Several hundred people stood in the square, and not one of them spoke.

After a moment, the craftsman standing at the square’s far west end raised his hand: ”I heard it. Not one word missed.”

The craftsman at the far east end raised his hand too: ”I heard it as well. Even the words ’roofless’ — I heard them plain.”

Then the southeast corner, the northwest corner, the very middle of the square. From every direction, hands went up. The voice was not loud — but it was clear, everywhere.

The crowd erupted.

”A marvel!”

”That’s no human throat — that’s... that’s the wall speaking for him!”

”I was standing in the very last row — I heard the man in front of me cough!”

The shouts came from every direction at once, and the craftsmen heard their own shouting coming back at them, every word clear — which only made them shout louder. The square had become a place where the voice did not die; the men were not used to it, and they behaved the way men behave when they discover their own voice carries: they used it, and laughed at the wonder of it, and then went quiet, one by one, as the wonder sank in.

The craftsmen took turns standing on the altar to try it. One big-voiced man bellowed a shout and was stopped by Lu Zhu: ”Use your ordinary volume. On the day of the ceremony, the man on the altar will not shout.” The man tried it low — and the voice still carried, clear, to every corner of the square. The shyest laborer on the works went up, stood for a long moment, and managed: ”I... I’d like a drink of water.” The whole square heard it, and burst out laughing. The laborer’s face went red to the collar — but his eyes were bright enough to startle.

The laughter was the sound the square had been built for, in a way the testers had not planned: not a ceremony, not an order — a shy man’s ordinary sentence, carried two hundred paces to a crowd that answered it with joy. The square had been given to the people in that moment, and everyone in it knew it.

Shafi stood in the crowd, eyes wide. She said quietly to the pharmacy boy beside her: ”If this were the healing hall — if Teacher Imset stood at the door and said ’the serious cases first,’ the whole quarter would hear it.” The pharmacy boy clicked his tongue: ”That would save a lot of throats.”

Meru said nothing. He walked a circuit of the square, and at last came to Lu Zhu, took his pipe from his mouth, and said: ”In my life I’ve seen plenty of gathering places. A place that makes people stand still — this is the first.” He paused, and added: ”On the day of the ceremony, stock extra water. Crowds get thirsty, and crowded.”

He said stock water, and he stocked it. The next day, Meru drew two hundred old water jars from the alliance’s stores, hired men to scrub them clean, and stacked them in the storehouse at the square’s west end. He also had the kilns fire a hundred extra coarse clay bowls — for ladling water to the crowd on the day of the ceremony. When Lu Zhu heard of it, he said: ”You think farther ahead than the offices.” Meru knocked his pipe out: ”A crowd squeezed together for a day can endure anything but thirst. Thirst turns to disorder — and when there’s disorder, even a holy temple won’t save you.”

Meru did one more thing besides. He called the new capital’s big merchants together and worked out the shop arrangements for the day of the ceremony: which flatbread stall went to the east market, which water cart into the north lane, which salt shop stocked up ahead of time. The merchants grumbled at the bother at first; Meru asked one question: ”All Egypt is coming to the new capital to see the ceremony. Do you want a share of that money, or not?” The merchants had their schedules arranged by nightfall.

The arrangement was pure Meru: no grand gesture, no announcement — just the city’s commerce re-plumbed, quietly, the way he re-plumbed every route he touched. The merchants who grumbled at the meeting were the first to thank him at the next one, when they saw the crowds in their lanes; the flatbread man in the east market would, on the day of the ceremony, sell out by noon and curse his own short sight. Meru counted none of this in advance, and all of it.

”A merchant keeps his own accounts.” Meru said to Lu Zhu. ”You settle the god’s business, and the people come; the people’s business — I’ll settle it.”

Lu Zhu said nothing, and kept the matter in his heart. In the days that followed, half of the ceremony’s small arrangements were carried by Meru’s alliance.

The Chief Overseer stepped out of the crowd, walked to the square’s farthest edge, turned back, and said: ”Lu Zhu. Say something.”

Lu Zhu stood on the altar and said: ”On the day of the ceremony, every person in the city will hear every word spoken on this altar.”

The Overseer stood there, silent, for a long moment. Then he slapped his thigh: ”A stroke of genius! That is a stroke of genius!” His voice rolled across the square, bounced, and came back — heard plain as day.

”Old Calendar-Keeper — wouldn’t you say so?” The Overseer turned to look for him. Old Calendar-Keeper stood in the crowd, his eyes red, murmuring: ”The light is through. The sound is through. This temple — it is through.”

That afternoon, the Overseer went back to his offices and told everyone he met about the square’s sound. He told it vividly: ”You should have heard it — the voice comes off that altar as if it had grown legs. Two hundred paces, without running out of breath. I stood at the far west end; he spoke over there, and I heard it over here, as if it were spoken at my ear!” The officials were doubtful; several made appointments on the spot to try it. The next day, the offices closed for half a day, and a gang of officials ran to the square and took turns standing on the altar, testing the sound with officialese. ”By order of the pharaoh —” the tester called out half a sentence before he was pulled down: ”Speak like a person!” The tester, red-faced, switched to his ordinary tone — and the voice carried through the whole square as clearly as before. The officials were finally convinced; their mouths hung open, and none of them could close them for a long while.

The officials’ test was the square’s most demanding trial, in its way: if the sound could carry a man’s ordinary voice across two hundred paces, it could carry anything — because ordinary speech is what the square would actually hear. The officialese had failed not because the square disliked it but because no one in the crowd could stand it; the square itself was indifferent, and its indifference, the officials realized as they stood there with their mouths open, was the whole point: it did not pick and choose whose words it carried.

The news flew. By the third day, half the new capital knew: the temple’s square carries voices. Some would not believe it and came specially to test it. Lu Zhu did not stop them; he only had a board set up at the square’s entrance: ”Those wishing to test the sound: wait your turn in order; do not disturb the craftsmen.” The day the board went up, the line of testers stretched half a li. An old man stood on the altar and called out: ”Can my grandson hear me?” — and the grandson at the west end jumped up and down, shouting: ”I hear you!” — grandfather and grandson, a whole square between them, laughing until the tears came.

The grandfather had come to test the square, and stayed to test something else entirely — whether his voice could still reach his grandson across a distance that had, until that moment, required shouting. The square had given him back a kind of nearness, and he did not know what to call it, so he laughed, and the laughter carried too, and the whole line of testers laughed with him.

”This square,” Lu Zhu said to Kamon, ”from today on, anyone can use it. Gods may speak; people may speak.”

Kamon nodded. After a moment he said: ”I’ve written sound into the inspection system. Rough surfacing, gradient, column spacing — verified one by one. From now on, whoever moves a single slab, the account will find him.”

The inspection system had begun, months before, as a defense against the moles who had shifted a stake and swapped a stone. It had grown, with each new element of the temple, into the building’s nervous system: light had its ledger, and now sound had its ledger too. Kamon had spent his working life trusting his hands; the ledgers had taught him to trust the record as well — and the record, he had come to see, was the only thing that could outlast both the builders and the saboteurs.

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”The account of light, the account of sound — both kept on record. On the day of the ceremony, everything rests on those two ledgers.”

Old Qu said nothing. He walked a circuit of the square, came to the rough-surfaced low wall, and touched the face with his fingers. The surface was a field of tiny granules, like rubbed sand. He looked back at the altar, then at the grit in his hand, and said: ”In my Thebes years, when I built the inner sanctum, there was an echo in the hall, and the priests said it was the god whispering. We stonemasons believed it. I built temples all my life — and only now, at the end, do I understand: it was the wall talking.”

He had carried that echo in his ears for thirty years. It had followed him into every temple he had built since — the low hum of the inner sanctum, which he had learned to think of as the presence of the god. The priests had never told him what the echo was; they had only told him what it meant. And a craftsman who is told what a thing means long enough comes to believe it. The rough wall under his hand had taken the meaning back, the way a man takes back a loan: not angrily, but finally.

He paused, and added: ”The wall talks, and we can understand it. The god talks, and we cannot. Give me the wall.”

The old craftsmen around him laughed — and then, laughing, fell silent.

After that, Old Qu took on a new task: he taught the rough-surfacing craft to several young craftsmen on the works. His method was his old one: first, make the apprentice tap chisel points across a whole face of waste stone, and then feel it with a hand. Only when the hand found it even was the apprentice allowed to work on a real wall.

”This craft I guarded for half my life, like a treasure.” He told his apprentices. ”Only now do I understand: whether a thing is a treasure depends on who it serves. Serving a god, it stays hidden. Serving people, it gets passed down. Learn it well — someday, when anyone builds an ancestral hall or a lecture hall, they’ll need it.”

The teaching had a quality the apprentices had never seen in him before: generosity. For thirty years the rough-surfacing craft had been his private capital, the edge that made his name in Thebes — and he had guarded it the way men guard a well in a drought. Now he gave it away in an afternoon, apprentice by apprentice, and the giving seemed to cost him nothing at all. It was the second craft of his life to change its nature in this city: the columns had taught him that the rules he guarded were half the truth, and the rough wall had taught him that the treasure he guarded was worth more in other hands.

A young craftsman asked: ”Does an ancestral hall need to carry voices?”

”An ancestral hall is for the ancestors’ words to reach every ear.” Old Qu said. ”Otherwise, whom are you kowtowing to?”

The young craftsman understood only dimly — but his chisel hand grew steadier with every blow.

Old Calendar-Keeper was the last to leave. After the sun went down, he still sat on the steps at the square’s west end, cradling the roll of old leather. Lu Zhu walked over and sat down beside him.

”Master Builder,” the old man said, ”I kept the calendar all my life, and wrote down shadows all my life. Only now that I am old do I learn that shadows can build temples — and sound can build temples. What I kept was never only for the priests to reckon festivals.”

”What you kept,” Lu Zhu said, ”is the foundation of this temple. Without your records, the columns could never have been set so true.”

Old Calendar-Keeper shook his head — and nodded. He looked at the last of the sunset’s glow to the west, and murmured: ”In the old temple, the priests treated sound as a god’s thing. In this temple, sound belongs to people. For that one thing alone, I believe in this temple.”

He said it the way a man states a final account: he had kept the calendar, and the calendar had turned out to be a people’s thing after all. The priests had used his figures to fix their festivals; the new capital had used them to build a temple where a village elder could call his grandson across a square. One man’s life’s work, spent in both ways, and only the second spending had shown him what the work was for.

He rose and went. The tapping of his wooden staff, one beat after another, sounded unusually clear across the voice-carrying square.

He rose and went. The tapping of his wooden staff, one beat after another, sounded unusually clear across the voice-carrying square.

That night, Lu Zhu held no celebration. He carried a lamp and walked the square from end to end, once more. He set his steps lightly, as if afraid of disturbing the sound lying underfoot. When he reached the west end, he stopped and looked back at the altar.

Moonlight lay bright on the altar. The river of sound and the river of light both flowed quietly through that one patch of moonlight.

For an instant, he had the strange feeling of standing in another square, many years ago. That square was very far away, its lights brighter than moonlight, its voices louder than this one’s. When he had designed dining spaces in his old trade, what he cared about most was whether seated guests could hear each other speak — too noisy, and people could not sit; too quiet, and it did not feel like a place to eat. Sound — he had been reckoning it for the better part of his life.

In the old days he had reckoned sound so that a man could eat one good meal. Now he reckoned sound so that tens of thousands could hear one sentence.

A man’s craft does not change in a lifetime. Only the place where the craft is put down changes.

He stood still for a moment, letting the thought settle. The square was empty of people, but not of presence: the rough walls held the evening’s voices in their fine grains, the way a cliff holds the sea; the gradient lay underfoot, invisible, doing its one patient job; the columns stood in their two rings, keeping the sun’s and the people’s accounts together. He had built quieter things in his life — granaries, drainage, walls — but he had never built anything that held so much of a city’s daily breath.

He took back his gaze and walked on. The square was very quiet — only his own footsteps, and the sound of the Nile in the distance, mixed together, one beat after another, like the city breathing.

He thought of the arcs drawn on the night of the equinox, and of those clouds. When the light scatters, the sound remains. With these two, on the day of the ceremony, whether it rained or shone, this temple could not fall.

Back in his room, he added one line at the bottom of the drawing:

”Sound does not scatter from the field.”

He did not sleep at once. He sat before the lamp, looking at the sheet covered in arcs, and a thought came to him.

The old temple’s priests said the oracles could be heard by priests alone. The people knelt outside the hall and heard only a humming echo. For a thousand years, it was not that the god would not speak — it was that the walls had hidden the voice. Now this square had given the voice back to every person: one sentence on the altar, and the whole field heard it. No one could hide words; no one could intercept words.

And only now did he understand: the ”river of sound” he had built did not carry sound.

It carried fairness.

The lamp’s wick popped. He trimmed it brighter, rolled up the square’s acoustics drawing, wrapped it in three layers of oilcloth, and locked it in the chest. In the chest, too, lay the western works drawings, the granary damp-proofing drawings, and all those leather sheets he had drawn and redrawn over the years, worn soft by wind and sand.

These things were all meant to be passed down, someday. To whom, he had not decided. But keep them — that, he had decided.

The next day, Kamon came to him with a matter.

”A man crouched behind the colonnade at the square’s west end for half the night.” Kamon said. ”My men saw him. He carried a small hammer — but he did not strike with it. He used the hammer’s handle to tap the wall lightly, tap, and then put his ear to it. Like a man testing an echo.”

The description was exact, and that was what made it chilling: a man who taps a wall and listens does not want to break it — he wants to learn it. The square’s voice had gone out into the world, and the world had sent back a listener who was not a curious grandfather and not a doubting official. Kamon’s men had described him as patient, methodical, unhurried — the posture of a professional.

Lu Zhu was drawing the ceremony’s movement plan. His charcoal stopped.

”The man?” He asked.

”Gone.” Kamon said. ”The night patrol gave chase but could not catch him. All they found on the ground was half a hammer handle.”

”They have begun to study our sound.” Lu Zhu said. He set down the charcoal and walked to the window. In the night’s darkness, the temple works’ outline lay quiet, like a sleeping beast.

”Let them study.” Lu Zhu said. ”The more they study, the less they will understand — this sound belongs to the whole city.”

Even so, the two men combed the works again. This time, they combed the places where sound might be tampered with: the wedges under the columns, the backsides of the rough-surfaced walls, the hollows beneath the slabs, the blind corners behind the colonnades. Every place was opened and inspected, then closed again. Kamon’s men set hidden watches at the square’s four corners, and the night lamps went from two to four.

”Their testing of the echo means they want to do something with sound too.” Kamon said. ”On the day of the ceremony, the square will be packed. If they choose that moment to strike...”

”Then they will first have to work out the sound.” Lu Zhu said. ”The sound is in our hands. To fake it, they must first pass through our gate.”

”What I fear is they won’t fake it.” Kamon said. ”They’ll simply shout from inside the crowd. This square carries voices — good news travels far; bad news travels farther.”

Lu Zhu looked at him. Kamon was right. A voice-carrying square was a double-edged sword: on the day of the ceremony, if a man hidden in the crowd shouted ”the god’s punishment descends,” tens of thousands would hear it, clear as a bell — and the false would become true.

”So the ceremony’s movement plan must be rethought.” Lu Zhu said. He sat down and spread out the half-drawn plan. ”Where the people stand, where the officials stand, where people may enter, where they may not — all of it fixed. Wherever the sound can reach, the eyes must also hold.”

”This — I take it on.” Kamon said. ”On the day of the ceremony, my men will cover the square. If an extra pair of shoes appears beside any slab, I’ll know it.”

The two men acted on it that very day. That evening, Lu Zhu had two craftsmen run a test: one of them stood in the crowd’s position at the west end and suddenly shouted ”The god’s punishment descends!” The four characters went out — and the whole field turned as one. Lu Zhu, standing on the altar, heard them with perfect clarity — the voice, carried by the square’s slope and walls, came out louder than ordinary speech.

The test had been run in an empty square, with two craftsmen — and it had stopped the works cold. Every man who heard it, even knowing it was a test, had felt the hairs on his neck rise; the voice had carried the weight of a crowd behind it, though there was no crowd. That was the power the enemy meant to borrow: not the words, but the authority the square gave them. In an empty square the shout had frozen the works; in a packed one, it could turn a ceremony into a riot.

”Do you hear it.” Lu Zhu said to Kamon. ”That is what they mean to do. Borrowing our sound, to shout their orders.”

Kamon’s face was very dark. He walked a circuit of the square, looking at every corner where a man could hide, one by one. When he came back, he said: ”On the day of the ceremony, there can be no blind corners in this square. My men — two to a corner. Whoever opens his mouth to shout, we’ll see where he stands first.”

”And one more thing.” Lu Zhu said. ”When the day comes, the men on the altar will be heard by the whole field when they speak — and heard by the whole field when they do not speak. So every man on the altar must be our own man.”

”How many can stand on the altar?”

”Three.” Lu Zhu said. ”The chief officiant. The Chief Overseer. And me.”

”When the time comes, I’ll have my men ring the altar.” Kamon said. ”Three above. Thirty below.”

Lu Zhu nodded, and wrote the rule into the movement plan. The wind came off the river and rattled the drawing’s corners.

In these days, the people of the square grew more numerous every day.

By day, the surrounding buildings were still being finished. By evening, when the work stopped, the square came alive. The nearby residents came after supper, in twos and threes — some sitting on the west steps talking, some strolling the circuit of the columns; the children chased each other along the foot of the rough-surfaced walls, and their laughter rolled around the square.

The laughter was the square’s finest hour, in a way none of the builders had planned: it was the sound the design had been made to carry, and it carried it effortlessly — a child’s shriek at the east end arriving at the west end as a bright, whole sound, no louder than it needed to be. The grown-ups did not remark on it; they had stopped remarking on the square’s carrying voice the way men stop remarking on the sun. It was simply how the place worked now, like the light at noon.

An old woman who sold dates came every evening with her basket, never calling out her wares, just standing at the square’s edge watching the people. Once a child ran up and asked how much the dates were; she blinked, and said: ”Not for sale today. Take two.” The child grabbed two dates and ran off. The people around laughed at her: ”If they’re not for sale, why bring the basket?” The old woman said: ”I came to look at the lamps.” She meant the wind lanterns newly hung at the square’s four corners — lit as the sky dimmed, making the square bright as day.

She came because the lamps were worth seeing, and because the square was worth standing in — two things that had never been true of a holy place in her lifetime. She had been born in the shadow of the old temple’s gates, and had learned as a girl to walk wide around them after dark; holiness, in her experience, was a thing that wanted you at a distance. This temple wanted her close. She did not know the word for what had changed; she knew only that her feet carried her there every evening, basket and all.

”At the old temple’s gate,” the old woman said, ”who would dare go near after dark? Dark and dreadful. This temple is good — bright and warm, like a lamp lit in one’s own house.”

The words reached Lu Zhu’s ears. He was checking the ceremony’s movement plan; he heard them out, and his charcoal paused — and added one stroke to the drawing: on the day of the ceremony, the lamps at the square’s four corners were to be doubled.

Old Calendar-Keeper had not been idle either. He took out the old leather rolls he had kept all his life, one by one, and copied the shadow data onto fresh sheepskin — small characters, but neat. When someone asked why, he said: ”The old rolls in the archive will be eaten by worms sooner or later. I’m copying a set to leave with the Master Builder as a record. The people who come after, when they need to reckon the sun — there will be something to check.”

He copied slowly; a full roll took him more than a day. When Lu Zhu heard of it, he had Meru’s caravan carry a dozen sheets of fine sheepskin and two freshly sharpened charcoals to the old man. Old Calendar-Keeper received the gifts, ran his hand over the sheepskin, and said nothing for a long while. At last he said: ”Fine leather. Worthy of these figures.”

He said it with the tenderness of a man who has spent a lifetime writing on whatever scrap came to hand, and has just been handed, for the first time, the paper his work deserved. The figures had never been the problem; the leather had always been too poor for them. Now the copying would go faster, and the record would outlast him by a hundred years, and the thought sat in his chest the way good leather sits under good writing: flat, and true.

Imset came to the square once.

He came at evening, just as the craftsmen were testing the sound. He stood outside the crowd, listening as Lu Zhu spoke quietly from the altar — and heard every word, clear. When the speaking was done, he did not go closer. He stood where he was for a moment, and left. Shafi caught up with him and asked what he had seen.

”I saw one thing.” Imset said.

”What?”

”A temple that everyone can hear.” Imset said. ”More powerful than a temple everyone can see. What is seen — some people close their eyes. What is heard — cannot be avoided.”

He spoke with the authority of a man who had spent his life on the other side of that power: he had been the voice in the dark temple once, the one whose words carried weight because no one could see where they came from. He knew exactly what it meant to speak from a place of hidden sound — and exactly what it meant to hand that place to everyone at once. The temple that could be heard by all could not be used by any one voice alone; that was its genius, and its safety.

Shafi thought about it, and said: ”Then when the healing hall holds its big meetings, we should speak from a high place too.”

Imset shook his head: ”The healing hall does not learn this. The temple’s sound belongs to gods and people; the healing hall’s sound must be spoken ear to ear, one at a time. Illness is not heard out of the air.” He walked a few steps, and turned back to add: ”But once the temple’s sound spreads, the healing hall’s medicines will find people who believe in them.”

Shafi chewed on the sentence all the way home, and at the end had not fully understood it. She knew only that her teacher had spoken more today than he usually did.

After the spring came, the third letter arrived from the western line.

It was from Seb, and the writing was denser than before. He wrote: the winter had brought no snow, and the Libyans had made no move all winter — not because they had withdrawn, but because they were holed up in camp, waiting out the cold. Now the grass was greening and the horses were putting on flesh, and the figures in the camp had multiplied again. Date-Grove’s wall had closed; North-Bank’s wall was most of the way up; Camel-Bell’s hut had been raised. Six towers stood. Horenheb said the enemy had waited a whole winter, so with spring they would surely move — and the first move would likely be a small raiding party, sent to test the new wall with a small fight.

At the end of the letter, Seb wrote: ”The general says — the western line’s first battle, if it is not fought at all, fine; if it is fought, it must be fought where the whole line can see. The men who hold the wall must first believe in the wall themselves.”

The sentence stayed with Lu Zhu. It was Horenheb’s military logic, written out in Seb’s careful hand: a wall that had never been tested was a wall the men did not yet believe in, and a line of men who did not believe in their wall was a line that would break at the first charge. The first battle mattered less for what it won than for what it proved — to the enemy, and to the men behind the wall. The same could be said of the ceremony to come: it was the first public test of everything this city had built, and its meaning would outlast its day.

Lu Zhu read the letter twice and handed it to Kamon. Kamon read it, and said: ”The western line is about to be tested for real.”

”Mmm.” Lu Zhu said. ”And our side — soon too. Both sides are waiting for the same day.”

That day was drawing nearer, day by day.

Every evening, Lu Zhu went to stand in the square for a while. He stood at the edge of the altar, watching the west-end wind lanterns light up one by one, watching the people out for their evening strolls, listening to their footsteps spread and gather across the square. Sometimes he said a word, low, as if to himself.

”Soon.”

The word dropped into the square, was caught gently by the rough-surfaced wall, and scattered into a fine, sandy rustle.

He did not say what would come soon — the ceremony, the test, the first battle in the west, or the day when every voice in the city would be heard. The word did not need an object. It was a promise, made to the square itself, in the square’s own language: soon, everything that had been built here would be put to the use it was built for.

In the distance, the ferry crossing’s lamps burned in a long chain, spreading as far as sound spreads.

In the night wind, someone was coming from the direction of the crossing — footsteps light, as if walking on the river of sound.
