Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 67: Chapter 3: Seb Goes West — The Chain Fortress Takes Shape

Seven days of walking, and the world narrowed to three sounds: the wind, the footsteps, and the camel bells. Seb led the column west for seven days, and by the end of it, the world had been winnowed down to those three sounds alone — the wind, the footsteps, and the bells on the necks of Meru’s caravan camels. Ding, dang. Ding, dang. One after another, stretched long by the wind.

The first four days followed the West Bank trade road, where there were still villages and ferry crossings, and the nights brought hot soup. The craftsmen talked a great deal at first — about wages, about the new capital, about the temple whose foundations were rising back home. By the third day the talk had thinned; by the fourth there was nothing left but the sound of walking. When the column turned into the desert road toward the western line, the trees along the road went first, then the grass, and finally the last traces of human habitation. What remained was sand in every direction, and the three sounds.

The sand was not the same sand as the new capital’s river-flat sand. It was finer, and it moved — the whole surface of the desert seemed to be in slow motion, sliding under the wind like water under a skin of ice. The craftsmen learned to walk with their eyes down, mouths shut, sleeves tied at the wrist. They learned to drink without wasting a swallow, and to keep the camel bells within hearing at all times, because a bell out of range meant a man fallen behind, and a man fallen behind in this country was a man the sand was already writing off.

At night, when the column camped, Seb did not hurry to sleep. He went over the day’s notes by lamplight: which stretches of sand ridge were firm, which stretches of sand were soft, where a dead well stood, from where the wallheads of three garrison forts could be seen at once. The lines on his drawing board grew denser with every day.

The notes were not only measurements. On the edge of the board, in the smallest characters he could make, he had written the things measurements cannot hold: the smell of a well that had gone dry, the direction a distant village’s smoke bent in the afternoon, the color of the sand where a spring lay buried. His master had taught him that the ground writes its own record, and that a builder who could not read it would build blind. Every night, he read back what the day had written. The old stonemason squatted nearby and watched him draw — watched for two days, and on the third day said: ”Your master told you to measure with your feet. You’re measuring the softness of the sand as well.”

Seb did not raise his head. The charcoal scraped across the sheet, steady. ”The ground does not lie.” He said. ”A line on paper can be erased and redrawn. A wall built wrong — when it comes down, it falls on people.”

Another night, the wind beat the tent walls into a racket. Seb wrapped a coat around himself and came out — and saw, on the western edge of the sky, a small patch of red light. It brightened once, and went out.

”That’s their campfire.” The oldest carpenter in the column said; the bowl of his pipe glowed red in the dark. ”Don’t stare at it. The more you stare, the closer it gets.”

The oldest carpenter had been on the line before — twenty years earlier, as a boy soldier before he took up the saw. He never spoke of it except in such sentences: short, flat, and ending the conversation. The men had learned not to push him past them.

Seb looked a while longer at the place where the light had been, and turned and went back into the tent. That night, he slept with the drawing board pressed under his pillow — the board with the day’s lines on it, the lines that marked what he had seen and what he still had to see. The wind beat the tent all night, and the red light did not come back, which was worse than if it had.

The column reached Fort No. 3 in the afternoon. The wind was strong; it flung sand against their faces like fine needles. The fort stood on a rise of hard ground, its walls the color of the desert itself — the color of a thing that has been in the wind so long it has stopped being a building and become a feature of the terrain.

Horenheb was waiting outside the fort. Behind him stood a file of soldiers, and behind the soldiers, a press of villagers — the news that the new capital’s craftsmen were coming had traveled through the oasis three days ahead of the column itself. Seb recognized Horenheb from far off on horseback: a single man standing in the mouth of the fort gate, standing very straight, like a boundary stone planted in the sand. Men were not supposed to stand that still in that much wind; the boundary stone did, and so did he.

Seb dismounted and brushed the sand off his clothes. Horenheb did not exchange pleasantries. His first question came straight at him:

”Three months. In three months, can you raise me a line that will stop cavalry?”

The wind blew between the two of them, carrying a little sand, and no one in the crowd breathed. Dozens of eyes fixed on this young man who had not even finished tying off his horse — a boy, some of them were thinking, a boy with a drawing board, and the whole line waiting on his answer. Seb’s palms were soaked with sweat — but when he spoke, his voice did not tremble:

”General — let me look first. When I have seen the ground, I will give you a number.”

Horenheb looked at him for several breaths. Then he nodded, and stepped aside to clear the way.

”Good. Look at the ground.”

The crowd watched the young man walk past the general and into the fort, and something in the way the two men had measured each other in four sentences settled the crowd’s first judgment: the general had not looked down at him. A commander who looks down at a man he needs is a commander who has already lost him. Horenheb had looked at Seb the way he looked at his own squad leaders — level, and waiting.

As the column filed into the fort, the crowd did not disperse.

”Only this many came?” Someone muttered in the crowd. ”Twenty-odd men. Not enough to repair one corner of one fort.”

”Don’t say that.” A woman with a child on her back answered him. ”Didn’t you hear? That young man leading them — he wants to look at the ground before he gives a number. That’s a man who means to do real work.”

”What good does real work do?” The first man said. ”The Libyans don’t care whether you’re earnest or not.”

Others counted the column’s tools — chisels, hammers, measuring ropes, ink-line boxes — counting item by item, and at the end said: ”The tools are complete and orderly. The question is whether the sand will take to them.”

A third voice, older, cut through the talk: ”Stop it. Twenty-five men with good tools and a leader who looks at the ground before he opens his mouth — that’s more than this line has seen in five years. Let the young man work.” The talk subsided, though the watching did not.

Seb heard all of it. He said nothing — only took the drawing board from his back, tied off his horse properly, and followed the escorting soldier into the fort. Before he went in, he looked back once at the sand ridge to the west. There was nothing on the ridge. Only the wind running.

The column rested a night in the fort. Seb did not sleep. Sleep, in any case, would not have come: the wind had a voice in this country, and it spoke all night in a language the new capital had never taught him. The drawings on the table were his own, but the ground they described was not; every line he had drawn at home was being tested tonight against the memory of the day’s walking, and the testing would not wait for morning. He spread his drawings out under the oil lamp and ran his fingertip over the positions of the seven forts, one after another, over and over. Outside the window, the desert wind blew the whole night, rattling the shutters against their frames.

The craftsmen did not sleep much either. The fort was small; twenty-five men were packed into two soldiers’ rooms on beds of dry reeds. One man rose in the middle of the night to relieve himself, and stood under the fort wall looking up — at the cracked wall, the notched crenellations — and looked for a long time before he came back in, whispering: ”This wall — it’s worse than the old work sheds we tore down in the new capital.” His bedmate kicked him: ”Keep your voice down. Men are holding this place with their lives.”

The craftsmen woke themselves before dawn. They were not used to idleness. Some wandered the fort, looking for water jars, for material yards, for any place they could put their hands to work. The old stonemason crouched before the crack in Fort No. 3’s wall for the better part of half a watch, knocked his pipe out on the ground three times, and finally said to Seb: ”This crack has to be rushed. One more rainy season, and this wall is finished.”

The next morning, Horenheb personally took him out on the road.

”Seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages.” Horenheb said. ”I’ll walk you through all of them. The road is bad. Keep up.”

The road was indeed bad. What they called a road was only a string of shallow pits pressed into the sand by hooves. Seb carried his drawing board, sweating hard, but he did not fall a single step behind. At every stop, he crouched first to look at the ground, then raised his eyes to the distance, then took out the charcoal and drew on the leather sheet. He drew fast, his lines short and dense — as if he meant to pin every stone to the paper.

He measured the crack in Fort No. 3’s wall three times. He hung a plumb line from the top of the wall on a rope and traced the crack’s course — it did not run straight down; it ran diagonally, like a bolt of lightning. He noted on the drawing: crack two feet deep, slanting south, wind-erosion mouth at the southern end.

The measuring took the better part of an hour, and Horenheb watched the whole of it without comment — a general’s patience for a craftsman’s method, or a craftsman’s patience for a general’s. When Seb straightened up from the third pass, his knees cracked, and he realized the crack was already wider than his fist at the top, and that the whole wall would not survive another winter of frost and wind. He wrote one more line on the sheet: ”Rush. Before the rains.”

For the leaning wall of Fort No. 7, he had two craftsmen hold a long pole upright while he hung a plumb line from its top and measured how far the line’s bob fell from the base of the wall. It leaned nearly a foot. He noted: wall eighteen feet high, leaning one foot, base hollowed half a foot at the deepest point; must be backfilled before straightening.

The two granary workers Meri had sent for Fort No. 6’s cellar arrived that same day. They did not begin work at once — first they measured the cellar inside and out: the slope of the roof, the damp of the floor, the lie of the ground at the doorway. When the measuring was done, the two of them crouched at the cellar mouth and murmured to each other for a while, and one pulled out the drawing Meri had written and compared it to what they had measured. By evening, the roof’s waterproofing slope was already under construction.

Seb watched from nearby for a while and did not interfere. These two granary workers measured ground the way his own school did — measure first, calculate second, move third. Men trained by Meri did not need watching.

Of the four watch posts, he studied the one whose north wall had collapsed the longest. The post sat between two dunes, and the line of sight from the west was blocked by the southern dune. On the drawing he shifted the post’s position three finger-widths south — and for those three finger-widths, the post gained a full li of sight.

”How far off is the drawing from the ground?” Horenheb asked.

”Not far.” Seb said. ”But the little bit it is off — that little bit is the road the enemy slips through.”

He said it without taking his eyes off the sheet. The charcoal kept moving.

On the first night, they slept at Fort No. 4.

Supper was mixed-grain porridge with dried dates. Horenheb and Seb sat side by side at the foot of the fort wall, each eating his own, neither speaking. The wall sheltered them from the wind; no lamp was needed — the moon was so large it was almost glaring, and the sand around them lay pale as a field of ash.

”If my son had lived,” Horenheb said suddenly, ”he would be about your age.”

Seb’s hand paused over the bowl. He knew about the general’s son — lost in the oasis battle; there was a younger son too, with a broken arm, who had been carried back with his wits gone. The whole line knew. The line was a country of such knowledge; every fort had a name attached to a loss, and the names were passed around the campfires the way other countries passed around songs.

”He died stopping horses for the village.” Horenheb said, his voice flat, as if speaking of a very old matter. ”He was sixteen that year. The other children had hidden in the gully. He turned back to carry an old woman who could not run. The horses went over him.”

He was silent for a moment, and then said: ”So when I look at the walls you draw — I look at them more gladly than at anything else.”

Seb did not answer. After a while he said: ”My father died building a border wall. The wall was not finished, and then he was gone. My mother carried me out of there — three days and three nights of walking, to the West Bank.” He paused. ”If I had known how to build walls back then, my father would not have died at the foot of one.”

The two of them said nothing more. The moon climbed high; the fort wall’s shadow lay long across the sand, like another wall.

The village elder of North-Bank Village showed them a stretch of old wall. It had been built before the year before last, and had collapsed down to its footing, camel thorn grown thick over the foundation. The elder pushed the thorn clumps aside with his foot, revealing the stones beneath: ”That year, they said we’d build walls too. Halfway through, the court drafted the craftsmen away. The remaining half — last year, the Libyans came through this very gap.”

Horenheb said nothing. Seb crouched and scraped the loose sand away from the base of the footing to look. The trench had been dug shallow; the stones were laid loose; the mortar had never even been packed solid. He drew the old wall on his sheet, and wrote four characters beside it: ”Shallow base. Loose stone.” He did not need to write more; the two facts explained the wall’s whole life, and the village’s whole loss.

At the mouth of Camel-Bell Village stood a half-burned wooden stake, with knife marks still visible on the charred surface. The villagers said it was left from this spring’s raid; among those taken was a twelve-year-old child, from the household beside the stake. No one had pulled the stake down; the village had left it standing the way other villages left memorial stones, except that this one still smelled of smoke when the wind was from the west.

”Here.” Horenheb spoke suddenly, raising his hand toward a gentle slope west of the village. ”Every time they come, they come down that slope. It is not steep — a horse can come at full speed. Last year, arrows shot from the top of that slope could reach the village gate.”

Seb followed his gaze. The slope ran up to the sand ridge, unbroken, no cover anywhere. On the drawing, he circled the slope — three deep rings. His charcoal pressed hard enough to groove the leather.

After three days of walking, Seb understood one thing: repairing a village is not the same work as building a house.

A house is built around the question of how people will live comfortably. A village is built around the questions of where the horses will come from, and where the people will run. Every line he had drawn before had been a line for people to walk on. Every line he drew now was a line to stop horses. The paper was the same paper — but the eyes behind it had changed. He had come west expecting to apply what he knew; instead, in three days, he had unlearned the comfortable part of it and kept the part that would hold. The old stonemason, watching him on the second day, had said it better than anyone: ”The boy’s drawings look different now. They used to ask where a door should go. Now they ask where a horse will die.”

By the time they had walked all seven villages, it was dusk of the third day. Seb crouched a long time at the mouth of Date-Grove Village. He was not only looking at the terrain — west of the village, a great stretch of open sand, no cover at all; east, the oasis, its date groves dense enough to hide a man. He stood, propped the drawing board on his knee, and joined the seven villages into a single line — and at the western end of the line, Date-Grove Village stood out alone, like a finger stretched into the dark.

”Date-Grove is the most dangerous point.” He said. ”It takes the first cut for the whole line.”

Horenheb stood behind him and said nothing. He watched the young man crouch at the village mouth, watched him press the board against his knee and draw, stroke by stroke. The dusk crept in from the west, stretching both their shadows long across the sand.

”Come back.” Horenheb said. ”Everything you need is in your head now.”

Seb did not rise at once. He wrote one line of small characters at the edge of the drawing — ”Date-Grove Village, third day, dusk.” Then he tucked the charcoal back into his belt and stood. The charcoal was a stub left over from his master — worn to half its length; he had never had the heart to throw it away.

Back at Fort No. 3, Seb shut himself in the field tent and drew all night.

The lamp in the tent burned from black of night to gray of dawn.

Seb drew, revised, drew again. The first draft dissatisfied even himself — it was the West Bank drawings transplanted wholesale, and the West Bank was not the desert; the West Bank had rain and roads and neighbors; the desert had wind and sand and silence, and a drawing that ignored those three was a drawing that would kill men. He turned the sheet over and began again from nothing. In the second draft, he moved the watch posts three finger-widths south. In the third, he changed the tower spacing to follow the terrain. In the fourth, he joined the seven villages’ low walls into a single line — and at the western end of the line, Date-Grove Village stood out alone, like a finger stretched into the dark.

A craftsman who rose to relieve himself in the night saw the light in the tent, crept to the doorway for a look, and crept away on tiptoe. In the morning he told the others: ”That boy draws exactly like his master. Never lifts his head, never moves — as if he had grown onto the stool.”

The lamp oil ran out once. Seb refilled it in the dark and went on drawing. Toward the gray of dawn he blew out the lamp, rolled the finished drawing, leaned it against the tent post, and dozed for a little while. He dreamed of a wall — a very high wall — and of himself standing on its top, watching a great dark mass moving across the sand to the west. He woke with a start; the day was already fully light, and for one terrible moment he could not remember whether the wall in the dream had been finished.

At dawn he carried the redrawn sheet to the general’s tent. Several men were already standing inside — four of the seven forts’ squad leaders, and an old adjutant whom Horenheb had summoned specially. The old adjutant had kept the western line for more than thirty years; he was the oldest serving man there.

Seb spread out the drawing. It was no longer the sheet he had carried from the new capital: the seven forts remained, but two of the four watch posts had been moved, every one of the seven villages was marked with the course of its low wall, and the watchtower positions had grown from eleven to sixteen.

”I’ve changed the tower spacing.” He said. ”The original plan set one tower every three li — even and neat on paper. On the ground it does not work: the dunes block the line of sight, and from the top of a tower, the next tower three li away cannot be seen. A tower that cannot be seen might as well not exist. So the towers must follow the terrain: where the sand ridge bends, thicken the spacing — one every two li; where the ground is open and flat, loosen it — one every three li. In all, one rule — every tower must be able to see the smoke of the two towers beside it.”

He spoke the way his master spoke at a drawing table: not proposing, but reporting what the ground had already decided, and waiting only for the men to catch up to the conclusion. The squad leaders leaned over the sheet, and the older ones among them — the men who had watched the dunes for years — began, one by one, to nod. They did not need to check his arithmetic with the ground; they had walked the ground. The drawing was telling them what they had always known in their bones and had never had the words for.

”Sixteen towers.” The old adjutant spoke. He stood with his arms crossed, his eyes sweeping the drawing twice. ”Fine towers. But have you counted — sixteen towers: how much timber, how many men, how many days? With the twenty-five men you brought?”

”Counted.” Seb said. ”The tower bodies will be mud-brick, not solid timber. Wood only for the top frames — the old willow of Meru’s caravan is already on the road. The footings go down to firm earth, faced with stone. Of the sixteen towers, we raise four first — two at Date-Grove Village, one at North-Bank, one at Camel-Bell. Once those four stand, the eyes of the west are open.”

The old adjutant said nothing, and looked at the drawing again. This time he was looking at the fine rings Seb had marked around each tower — the watch range of each, ring pressed against ring, like a chain of nooses laid over the sand. He looked for a long time; then he drew his pipe from his breast and knocked it out on his boot sole. ”All right. This revision — I accept it. If the towers go up the way this drawing says, a rabbit crossing the sand ridge — the whole western line will know it.”

”Young man.” The old adjutant said. ”Where did you learn this method?”

”The West Bank.” Seb said. ”My master taught me. And I learned from the far side of a wall — my father died on the far side of one.”

The tent went still. The old adjutant’s mouth worked once, and he said nothing more. But when the meeting broke up, the old adjutant walked past Seb at the door, and paused, and said without turning: ”Your father’s wall got finished after all.” Then he walked on. Seb stood in the doorway for a long moment before he followed.

The remaining squad leaders fired their questions one after another.

”Who lights the smoke signals? There are no soldiers in the villages — villagers?”

”The villagers light them.” Seb said. ”The signaling material is issued by the forts. Each tower is stocked with three sets: dry camel thorn for white smoke by day; oil-soaked reed torches for fire by night. The order is taught to every village — one smoke for enemy sighted at the border, two smokes for enemy nearing the village gate, three smokes for enemy attacking the fort wall. They will drill until they can do it in their sleep.”

”Open crenellations on the wallheads — what about rainstorms?” Another squad leader asked. ”When one storm hits the oasis, the whole sand plain turns to mush.”

”Leave drainage weep holes in the wall base.” Seb pointed at several places on the drawing. ”Three per section, fist-sized, plugged in normal weather, opened during storms. The crenellations are built lower outside, higher inside, so the water runs outward. This is the same method used in the new capital’s house drainage.”

The squad leader who had asked was a man of few words; he looked at the marked places on the drawing, ran a finger along one of the weep-hole marks, and said: ”Three per section. Fist-sized. Plugged and opened — who sees to it?” ”The village watch.” Seb said. ”It goes into the wall’s standing orders, written down at the village mouth, so that the man who built the wall and the man who keeps it are never two different men.” The squad leader nodded once — the nod of a soldier who has just recognized a fellow soldier — and asked nothing further.

”The movable gates — how are they guarded at night?”

”A knee-high horse-stop stake outside each gate.” Seb said. ”A horse must slow to get past it; people pass through the small opening at the side. Two men hold the gate, one on each side, a knife and a gong between them. When the gong sounds, every gate in the village opens.”

”Every gate?” ”Every gate.” Seb said. ”A village that fights as one keeps its gates as one. The gong is the village’s single voice — one sound, and every door in the place becomes a wall.”

When the questions ran out, one squad leader stopped asking. He stared at the drawing for a long time, and said: ”What this drawing of yours shows — it turns the entire western line into one village.”

The squad leader was not mocking. He had said it the way a man names a thing he has just understood — slowly, as if tasting the shape of it. The line had been seven forts, four posts, seven villages: a string of separate places, each one alone when the riders came. What the drawing showed was the same string tied into a net — and a net, unlike a string, could be pulled tight in one place without coming apart everywhere else.

”Right.” Seb said. ”One large village that reports its own alarms.”

The longest argument came next: what to repair first.

Horenheb’s position was the main forts first — the crack in Fort No. 3, the grain cellar of Fort No. 6. These were the line’s vital points; if the grain cellar was not repaired, a siege meant death.

Seb disagreed. He said Date-Grove Village came first.

”Date-Grove stands at the westernmost tip, sticking out alone. A cavalry charge lands its first cut on that village.” Seb pointed to Date-Grove on the drawing. ”If the village falls first, the people’s spirit is broken. With spirit broken, no wall built afterward, however high, will have anyone to defend it. But give Date-Grove a wall first — even half a wall — and the old and young of the village have a foundation under them. They hold the first night; the beacon gets lit; the fort’s soldiers arrive in time. One village holding is what makes every village behind it willing to give its labor.”

”People first, then the border.” He added, in five characters.

Horenheb said nothing. He stood over the drawing, one hand on his sword hilt, and was silent for a long time. The men in the tent did not dare make a sound.

”General,” Seb said, ”when Date-Grove was burned the year before last — from the lighting of the beacon to the soldiers reaching the village — how long did it take?”

”Half a watch.” Horenheb said.

”The riders came in from the west of the village, and from their arrival to the lighting of the beacon, less than the space of a meal had passed.” Seb said. ”The villagers had nothing in their hands; they could only run for the gully behind the hill. But if there had been a six-foot wall west of the village, they could not have brought their horses down — they would have had to detach half their men to attack the wall. Even if the wall held them only the space of a meal, the beacon would go up first, and the soldiers would arrive half a quarter-watch sooner. Half a quarter-watch — how many fewer dead?”

He paused, and said: ”Date-Grove: forty-seven. North-Bank: thirty-one. Camel-Bell: twelve. General — no day this wall stands early is a day it stands for nothing.”

Horenheb did not answer. His gaze rested on the drawing and did not move for a long time. The lamp hissed; the tent was still; the men waited, and in the waiting, each of them heard those numbers again — forty-seven, thirty-one, twelve — the arithmetic of the line, spoken aloud in a voice too young to have learned it, which somehow made it harder to bear.

”General,” an old soldier beside him could not hold back, ”repairing villages is useless. A low wall cannot stop horses. When it truly comes to fighting, you still need the forts. Twenty-five craftsmen — use them on the forts first.”

Horenheb turned his head and looked at him.

”You say a low wall cannot stop horses.” He said. ”Then tell me this: when Date-Grove burned the year before last, the village was only five li from Fort No. 3. Why, when our soldiers arrived, was the village already gone?”

The old soldier opened his mouth — and closed it. The answer was in the question.

”Because on those five li of road, there was nothing that could make a horse slow down.” Horenheb said. ”The village is our outpost. Lose the outpost, and the fort is a blind man’s fist.”

He turned back, took his hand from the sword hilt, and let his knuckles fall on the drawing at the position of Date-Grove Village.

”Date-Grove Village first.”

The standards were set that very afternoon.

The low wall: mud-brick over a stone footing, six feet high, crenellations on top for watch. The footing dug down to firm earth, clay packed in the joints between stones, and a skirt of crushed stone laid along the base outside — to hold against the wind’s digging, and against the water’s washing. This was what Lu Zhu had written in his letter, and Seb recited it without missing a single word.

The watchtowers: spacing to follow the terrain, one every two to three li, the top of each able to see the smoke of the two towers beside it. The smoke signaling had one fixed order — enemy at the border, one smoke; enemy nearing the village gate, two smokes; enemy attacking the fort wall, three smokes; smoke by day, fire by night.

The village gates kept their movable closures: convenient for people and livestock in peacetime, a wall in wartime when shut.

Horenheb added two rules of his own — the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime of fighting.

One: the crenellations must not be chest-high; they must be shoulder-high. Behind shoulder-high crenellations, a man shows only his eyes and half his bow — an enemy cannot draw a bead on him. Two: dig a shallow ditch nine paces in front of the wall. It need not be deep — one foot will do. A horse reaches the ditch, and its hooves check themselves. The instant of checking is the instant the men on the wall loose their arrows.

He set the two rules down the way he gave every order on this line: without embellishment, as if they had been true for a thousand years and he was merely the first man to write them down. The men of the line knew that manner. It was the manner of a commander who has paid for every rule he keeps with something he lost.

”The walls are yours,” he said, ”the fighting is mine. Those two rules — consider them borrowed from me to the walls.”

Seb wrote every rule into the drawing, and had a literate craftsman copy it out, and pasted it at the mouth of Date-Grove Village.

Horenheb also assigned ten soldiers to Seb — charged with hauling water, hauling materials, and guarding the works at night. He said it in front of the squad leaders: ”On the western line’s construction works, what Seb says carries the same weight as what I say. Whoever delays the work — military discipline will deal with him.”

Seb stood to one side, and his palms were sweating again. He had not expected the general to put it in such terms. Among the ten soldiers was a new recruit trained under the one-footed squad leader — a year younger than Seb himself, standing at rigid attention in the formation. The recruit’s eyes followed Seb whenever he moved, the way a young soldier’s eyes follow the man his commander has just made into an example. It was a burden Seb had not asked for and could not refuse: from that moment, whatever he built would be built in front of ten soldiers who would repeat his name to their squad leaders. He had been given a voice on this line. He would have to grow into it.

On the night before work began, Seb did his accounts until dawn.

The whole line’s works: the seven villages’ low walls, three thousand three hundred feet in total; sixteen watchtowers; five fort-wall repairs. The schedule he had given Horenheb: three months for the skeleton; for Date-Grove Village’s first wall section, ten days.

Materials: stone from the river flats, in ample supply; clay from the edge of the oasis; reed reinforcement to be supplied by the villages themselves; lime to come by Meru’s caravan. He calculated minutely. Three thousand three hundred feet of wall — one hundred thousand mud-bricks alone. One brick took three handfuls of straw reinforcement. Earth from the high bank west of the oasis — close to the villages, deep soil, and it would not harm the date groves. Stone: eight hundred cartloads; a round trip from the river flats to the villages took half a day; transport alone would occupy three craftsmen every day. He listed the numbers one by one on leather sheets — two full sheets of them.

The numbers were merciless, and Seb did not flinch from them. One hundred thousand bricks was not an act of faith; it was a schedule — so many bricks a day, so many days before the rains, so many hands to make the clay into mud, the mud into bricks, the bricks into wall. He had learned from his master that a builder does not hope a wall into standing. He counts it into standing. The charcoal moved down the sheets, and the count took shape — an army of its own, made of clay and straw and arithmetic, marching toward a date no one had chosen but everyone knew.

He also worked out the water — a day without water for the men building the wall was a day the wall was late. He wrote the water account on a separate sheet and handed it to Horenheb: ”The water — your soldiers must carry it. Fourteen trips in a tenday. Not one trip short.”

Horenheb took the sheet, glanced at it, and put it inside his breast. The sheet stayed there for the rest of the day — a builder’s numbers riding next to a soldier’s heart. It was the first time on this line that a ledger had been carried like an order. The water would come.

”The water — I will answer for it.” He said. ”The stone — you answer for it.”

On the day the works began, Date-Grove Village was noisier than at New Year.

The sound was not the sound of a festival — it was the sound of a hundred hands finding work at once: the ring of a pick on packed sand, the scrape of shovels, the thud of brick molds being filled and struck, children’s voices calling out the count. A village that had spent three years waiting for the horizon to move was moving itself, and the motion made a music of its own.

Not everyone believed. An old man of the village squatted at the foot of the wall, watching the craftsmen stretch their lines, and pursed his lips: ”Even the soldiers couldn’t hold the place. What can the villagers do? This wall, when it goes up — it’ll be nothing but a heap of dirt that falls at a push.”

A young wife nearby was displeased: ”Have you ever built a wall? If you haven’t, don’t talk. The masters from the new capital — they’ve built houses taller than you.”

”Building houses is building houses.” The old man said. ”Stopping horses — that’s another matter entirely.”

Their argument had not even finished when the first foundation trench went in. Seb worked with two stonemasons, stretching the lines, driving the stakes. The lines ran arrow-straight; the stakes went in solid. The dug-out sand piled up on both sides, shovel by shovel, growing higher.

The first to move were the women and children. Women carried water jars from their homes and set them in a row at the foot of the wall; children ran the length of the site carrying brick molds, the bigger ones helping the smaller — not one idle. By afternoon, the village’s able-bodied men had come too — some carrying stone on their backs, some pushing carts, and one leading two donkeys loaded with rubble picked from the river flats.

Seb spent half a day teaching the mud-brick making.

The new capital’s method differed from the villages’ ancestral way. The village way was to mix a little straw into the mud and be done with it. Seb had them mix the mud thoroughly and let it sit overnight, then trample it the next day — barefoot, round and round, until the mud could be drawn out into threads. The straw was not sprinkled; it was worked in, handful by handful, lengthwise into the mud, so the dried brick would not crack. The molds were the date-wood molds the guild had brought — copper-sheathed at the four corners — and the bricks they turned out had sharp edges and neat faces, stacked tight as a seam.

The teaching had to be done twice over — first with words, then with hands, Seb’s own bare feet in the mud alongside the villagers’, tramping the circle until the afternoon sun stood overhead. The villagers picked up the rhythm faster than he had expected; there was nothing new to them in hard work, only in the ordering of it. What they had never been told was that the mud had to be left to rest overnight, and that the straw went in lengthwise, and that the mold had to be struck just so. They learned the way a field learns rain.

”In the old days, we made bricks with a slap of the hand.” A villager said. ”Who knew there was so much ceremony.”

”The brick is the wall’s flesh.” Seb said. ”Flesh that falls apart — the wall cannot stand on it. One brick with a single crack, a hundred bricks make a hundred cracks. The wind gets in, and in three years the wall turns to dust.”

He held one freshly made brick up in his palm for the villagers to see: ”Make them like this. Break one, and re-mix the mud — no punishment. Make a good one — it goes on the wall.”

That evening, the threshing ground was covered in fresh bricks, row after neat row, like coins laid out on the ground.

The second day, the third day, more and more people came.

Seb drew the lines on the wall; as fast as he drew, the craftsmen built. Mud-brick on mud-brick, layer by layer; stone into the footing, block by block. By the fifth day, the first section of wall stood waist-high. By the eighth, chest-high. On the evening of the tenth day, the first wall of Date-Grove Village stood up — six feet of it, the crenellations on top not yet finished, but a man could stand behind it and, holding the wall, see a very long way.

The wall rose the way a thing rises when every hand in a village is on it: not steadily, but in surges — a course laid in the morning, a course laid before dusk, a repair made at noon when a brick cracked in the setting. The children had taken to pressing their palms into the still-soft mortar at the top of each course, leaving rows of small handprints that the builders left alone, because a wall with a village’s hands in it was a wall the village would defend. The grown-ups pretended not to notice the handprints; the children pretended not to know they were noticed.

All through those ten days, the old squad leader who had walked to Thebes sat at the foot of the wall every day.

He could not do heavy work, so he did one light thing: watering the new bricks to cure them. Every course the wall rose, he moved his wooden staff along and, with a wooden dipper, poured water evenly over the wall face. Desert mud-brick fears dry-cracking: watered too early, it slumps; watered too late, it cracks. The rhythm of his single foot was steadier than anyone’s.

The soldiers said he had earned the right to sit out the heavy work — he had given the line a foot, and a walk to Thebes, and eleven days of a road no one else would walk. The old squad leader waved that off with his dipper. A man who had watched a village burn from a wall he could not climb did not count the heavy work as the work that mattered. The watering was the work that mattered: a wall kept wet in the right rhythm was a wall that would hold, and a wall that would hold was a wall behind which children could grow up with both their parents.

During his rests, the villagers gathered around him and asked about Thebes. He did not like to speak of the court; he spoke of one thing only: ”There is a man at court who laid out our western line’s accounts, item by item, before the whole court. In the end, the court said: no more drafting.”

”Truly?” Someone asked.

”Truly.” The old squad leader said, and added: ”The general bought it with his rank.”

He spoke with his eyes on the western sand ridge, the wooden dipper moving steadily — one dipper, two dippers, three — never pausing.

The old man who had pursed his lips came too. He walked three circuits around the wall, and struck it twice with his fist. The wall did not so much as tremble. He clicked his tongue: ”It’s hard, all right. But it’s still as I said — whether it stops horses, we’ll only know when the horses come.”

”When the horses come,” Seb said, squatting on the ground tying a bundle of reed reinforcement, without raising his head, ”you’ll know whether it stops them.”

The old man did not answer. He walked two steps away, turned back, and neatened the few scattered bricks on the ground, setting them in a tidy row against the wall.

Horenheb came once every evening.

He rode up, dismounted at the village mouth, walked a circuit of the new wall without a word, remounted, and rode home. The circuit never varied: a quarter-turn of the wall, a stop at the unfinished gate, a look at the ditch line. The villagers had learned to read the circuit as other villages read omens — if the general’s walk was steady, the world was steady. One day he lingered longer — stood a while at the wallhead, and knocked on the wall face three times with his knuckles. Then he turned to Seb: ”This wall is sounder than the walls of my forts.”

The knocking was the same three knocks with which he had sealed the decision in the tent — the sound a man makes when he is closing an argument with himself. The men of the line had learned to read it: three knocks, and the matter was settled. Seb had heard it on the drawing, and now he heard it on the wall, and he understood that the two sounds were the same sound, and meant the same thing: the general had decided that this wall would hold, and everything in him would now move to make that decision true.

Seb was mixing mortar below; his hands paused for an instant at the words. He knew the general was not a man who gave praise lightly.

On the evening the wall stood, the cooking smoke of Date-Grove Village rose half a watch earlier than usual. Every household brought out its stored dried dates and sun-dried fish, and together on the threshing ground they cooked the craftsmen a hot meal. There was no wine — they drank boiled barley water. An old man raised his bowl: ”Walls are dead things; people are alive. From now on, our village counts as having something to lean on.” The people around him laughed at him: ”A few days ago you said the wall would fall at a push.” The old man stiffened his neck: ”Well — didn’t I tidy up all those bricks afterward?”

Everyone laughed. The laughter rang out behind the wall, and carried very far.

Seb sat at the edge of the firelight, eating the hot meal slowly, listening. He had not felt anything like this since the night his master sewed him the pack — the particular warmth of being inside a thing that was working. The wall behind him was six feet of mud-brick and stone and the labor of a whole village, and it had not fallen at a push, and the laughter was running along its top like a flag.

Once the works spread out, Seb discovered that the work was more than what the drawings showed.

Water came first. The soldiers Horenheb had assigned brought water on schedule — but desert roads cannot bear heavy carts; the water jars jolted on the donkeys’ backs, and every trip spilled a tenth. Seb had three half-buried storage jars dug in at the foot of the wall, their mouths facing north, covered with reed matting by day — water kept in the shade does not heat up in the sun.

The jars were a small thing, and they changed the rhythm of the site. Before, a man who wanted a drink walked to the donkey line, waited, drank, walked back — a quarter of an hour lost each time, multiplied by twenty-five craftsmen and a hundred villagers. Now the water stood where the work was, cool under its matting, and the quarter-hours piled up into hours, and the hours piled up into a day’s worth of wall. It was the kind of accounting Lu Zhu had taught him: the desert does not defeat you with its size. It defeats you with its friction. Remove the friction, and the desert shrinks.

The materials, at least, did not run short. Meru’s caravan camels came every few days, unloading lime, old willow, oilcloth, item by item, at the material yard outside Fort No. 3. The man in charge of the loads carried Meru’s message: ”The account is on the guild’s books. Whatever is short — write a note.” The first note Seb wrote was for half a cartload of dry firewood — the night shifts needed lamps to build by, and the fort’s wood was running short.

The labor, then. The villagers worked by day and went home by night, and progress depended on the weather. Seb divided the work in two: by day, work anyone could do — digging, carrying stone, making mud-bricks; by night, work for the craftsmen only — laying out lines, leveling, setting footings. In this way neither interfered with the other.

At the end of every tenday, Seb wrote a letter to Lu Zhu.

The letters were not long. The first said: two towers moved, one watch post shifted three finger-widths, eleven lines on the drawing changed. The second said: the first wall section at Date-Grove is waist-high, and the villagers turning out for work have grown from forty on the first day to one hundred and seventy. In the third letter, he asked three questions: were three storage jars at the wall base enough; should the crenellations be spaced at five feet or six; and when lime ran short, could fine clay from the river flats substitute for a third of it.

The letters were reports, but they were also something else — the thin thread by which a young man, alone in a desert for the first time, kept hold of the place he came from. He wrote them at the end of the working day, by the last of the light, in the same hand he had used at his master’s drawing table. He never wrote more than the facts. The facts were the part he could trust the thread to carry.

The letters went back with the water-hauling soldiers, and the replies came the same way. Lu Zhu’s replies were even shorter — a few lines each. The first: ”Good changes. The ground is right.” The second: ”Jars facing north, matting on top — you did right.” In the third reply, Lu Zhu had drawn a small picture — the front and back of a crenellation — with two characters beside it: ”Like this.”

Seb kept all three replies in the bamboo tube, with the drawings. He did not read them again — he did not need to; he had read them at the campfire until they were memorized. But he kept them. A young builder far from his master kept his master’s hand with him the way a sailor keeps a star.

One thing he had not expected happened too.

There was no place in Date-Grove Village to treat injuries. On the sixth day of the works, a child hurt his foot moving stones — the top of the foot swelled up high. An old man of the village grabbed a handful of plant ash and packed it on, saying two days of endurance would see it through. When Seb went to look, the child’s foot had already begun to fester, and every breath the boy drew was a wince. No one in the column knew medicine — in the end, a craftsman who had once been a wandering physician’s apprentice cleaned the wound with a small jar of barley beer, bound it in clean cloth strips, and splinted it between two boards of wood.

The child stopped crying. He leaned against the foot of the wall, looked at the new wall rising, and suddenly asked: ”Uncle — when will this wall go all the way around our village?”

Seb crouched down, looking at the boards on the boy’s foot, and said: ”Soon.”

He said it because it was the true answer — the line was already drawn on the sheet in the bamboo tube, the whole circle of it, waiting only for hands to make it. But he said it also because the boy was looking at the wall the way a child looks at a promise, and a promise was what the wall had become. A wall was many things: a defense, a boundary, an arithmetic problem. To this boy, lying at its foot with his foot in splints, it was the thing that would one day make the world safe to run in again.

The boy’s mother came searching, full of gratitude, and at the end pulled a handful of dates from her breast, insisting the apprentice take them. He would not; the two of them pushed and yielded, and finally the boy said: ”Mother — the masters still have to go back to work.” His mother stopped, put the dates back into her apron, and went away red-faced.

That night, Seb said one thing to Horenheb:

”General — when the wall is finished, there is still one thing missing.”

”What?”

”A place to treat wounds.” Seb said. ”Building the wall wounds people; holding the wall wounds them more. The village has no physician — one small wound can take a life. The works hold the village; the sickness in the village also has to be tended.”

He had not planned to say it. The words had come out of him the way the wall’s next course comes out of a mason’s hands — inevitable, once the line had been struck. He had been carrying the sight of the boy’s foot with him all day, the smell of the barley beer cleaning the wound, the sound of the mother’s gratitude. A wall without a place to mend the people behind it was a wall that protected nothing but its own stones.

Horenheb heard him out and said nothing. He stood on the fort wall, looking at the new section of wall at Date-Grove Village in the distance, for a long time.

”This matter — I will remember it.” He said. ”In the new capital, there are people who understand it better than we do.”

Seb knew whom he meant.

But no one noticed that, in the days when the first wall section of Date-Grove was rising, there were new eyes on the sand dunes to the west.

A Libyan scout lay on the sand ridge, watching, for two whole days. He watched how the craftsmen stretched their lines; he watched how the villagers carried stone; he watched the wall grow, section by section; and he watched when the fort’s soldiers brought water and when they changed the watch. Everything he saw, he drew in charcoal on a wooden board — the position of the wall, the position of the towers, the gate at the village mouth, the road the water came by.

He was a patient man, and a professional one — he drew only what mattered, in the economical shorthand of a man who has drawn many defenses before: a line for the wall, a dot for each tower, a notch for the gate, an arrow for the water road. He did not draw the children playing at the foot of the wall, or the women carrying jars, or the old man with the wooden staff and the dipper. His trade had no room for those. His trade had room only for what could be broken.

On the third night, he slipped down off the ridge. The board went inside his shirt, pressed against his skin, moist with sweat.

He was taking that drawing back to the camp.

The night the scout left the ridge, the sentry at Fort No. 3 came on watch. The new man on the wall caught a smell in the wind — horse sweat — very faint, gone in a breath. He lay on the crenellations and looked west for a long time. He saw nothing — nothing but the night, and the stars, and the faint place on the horizon where the sky was a degree lighter than the desert. He had been on this wall long enough to know that a smell in the wind was a fact, whether or not the eyes could confirm it. A fact could be reported. A smell could not be argued with. Near dawn, he reported it up the chain.

Horenheb listened, and gave one order: the night watch doubled to two men, and the beacon platform’s firewood moved entirely to the sheltered side, covered with oilcloth.

”They have come to look at us.” He said. ”We must not let them look for nothing.”

The order went down the line at first light, and the men who carried it out did so without questions — a line learns, over the years, that its commander’s quiet orders are the ones that matter most.

The first wall of Date-Grove Village stood in the moonlight — six feet high, its shadow as long as itself.

Behind the wall, the new mud-bricks had not yet dried through; a hand pressed to them found them warm. Two villagers kept the night watch, one on the wallhead, one at its foot, neither speaking — only the torch flame leaping in the wind. The one on the wallhead had asked for the first watch himself; he was the injured boy’s uncle. He kept his eyes on the ridge line, and every few minutes he turned to look at the wall’s own shadow, as if to confirm that it was still there, still holding.

West of them, the dunes were still, without a sound. But everyone knew that something, in that great darkness, was pressing forward inch by inch.

The villager on the wallhead raised his torch a little higher, and the firelight cut a small circle in the dark. Beyond the circle — the night, stretching without end.
