Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 93: Chapter 1: The Granary Net Forms — Grain and Goods Flow Steady

Before the horn sounded, Mery went through the war list down to its last line.

The lamp on the table had been refilled twice; its flame stood low and straight, and Mery worked in its circle of light, his brush moving down the list stroke by stroke, the way a man moves who has checked the same list a hundred times and means to check it a hundred more. What he checked stood behind the south gate: fifty earth bags, stacked in the gate tunnel, not one missing; forty plank bridges, leaned against the wall-foot, not one missing; two great water jars, filled to the brim, the cool water clear enough to mirror a man’s face. Then the south side of the city: four hundred flatbreads, handed out man by man, not one short; thirty stretchers — ten at the south gate, ten on the wall, ten at the field hospital. When the list was done, he drew a hook at its end with his brush.

When the hook was drawn, he turned his head and listened. From the direction of the south gate, no sound came. The night was so still it had turned thick, like a pot of porridge boiled down to its last and not yet dared to be uncovered. Even the river seemed to hold its breath against its banks.

”Soon.” He said, low.

Woser stood at the edge of the table. He had not gone home that night. From inside his coat he drew the string of old keys, polished until they gleamed, and hung them at his waist. The keys knocked against one another, ding by ding — like a row of bells that could not wait to sound. For thirty years those keys had opened one granary; this night they would open the road to every granary in Egypt.

”The list is checked, and the keys are hung.” Woser said. ”Wherever your list walks, my keys open.”

”Good.” Mery said. ”Tonight, the keys and the list both stay awake.”

In the courtyard of the official granary, not one granary keeper slept. Lamps burned. Ledgers lay open. Counting-rods were laid out in rows, their notches worn pale by years of thumbs. No one spoke; yet every man knew what he was guarding this night. They were not guarding an account. They were guarding the account that had mattered most in all Egypt for four months — and its last page, at this hour, lay pressed under the sky south of the city, where the blades were about to do their reckoning.

On the West Bank, the landing was awake too.

Meru’s four boats had been loaded before dark. Grain in the fore-holds, medicine amidships, lime and chopped straw weight down the stern holds — loaded in the order they would enter the city: what enters first is life; what enters last is walls. The air over the decks smelled of wheat dust and dried herbs and the sharp bite of lime, and under it all, of river water and old rope. The boatmen leaned against the gunwales and rested, but no one slept properly; every man kept one ear turned toward the dark across the water. Shunzi wiped his lantern three times over, until the glass shone back a man’s face; then he hugged the lamp to his chest, sat down in the bow, and stared east across the river.

”Boss,” Shunzi said. ”On the far bank — will it really come to fighting?”

”It will.” Meru said. ”When the horn sounds, it starts.”

”Then we...”

”We listen for the horn.” Meru said. ”The horn is meant for blades, and it is meant for boats too. When the blade moves, the boat moves.” He knocked out his pipe against the gunwale; the spark dropped into the river and died with a hiss. ”Four months, we slipped across by night. Tonight is the first time we cross by day, in the open, straight up to the beach.”

”That would be a fine thing.” An old boatman said. ”Sailing nights — these eyes of mine have worn themselves into a night owl’s eyes.”

”Owl or not,” Meru said, ”polish your pole first. Tonight this boat goes into the city behind the horn.”

In the army camp south of the city, that evening meal was quieter than any meal had been.

Horenheb had the cookhouse bake every last bit of good flour it held. The oven mouths glowed in the dark; the cook’s men worked with sleeves rolled to the elbow, flour dust hanging in the firelight like slow snow. The fifteen hundred men of the strike force — one thick flatbread and one waterskin apiece, handed out in silence. Five thousand men camped there; only those fifteen hundred had bread. The flour had come on Meru’s boats two days before, drawn from the granaries of the new capital — a handful of flour from several thousand li away, ten days on the road, turned into this bread on this night. Some of the men held their flatbread a moment before eating, as if weighing the whole ten days of road in their palms.

”Eat.” Horenheb stood on the slope and said. ”When you finish eating, take the whole four months back at once.”

No one answered. Men ate without looking at one another; each man’s eyes were on his own bread, and beyond the bread, on the dark to the south. Only the sound of bread being chewed ran on, patch after patch, like wind rising over open ground.

The night sank, little by little. On the city wall, the torches lit one after another into a single line, each flame leaning the same way in the wind, like a row of lamps held out along one arm. From the ten towers south of the city, three torches were raised, and lowered again. On the towers, the watchers stood with their hands on the cold stone; the wind off the river carried the smell of water and wet earth. The Zi hour passed. The Chou hour passed. In the last of the Yin hour, the sky was still dark — yet every man felt it coming, the way a man feels a storm in his bones before the first cloud shows: that hour had arrived.

A horn sounded from the south of the city.

It was long, and low, and it rolled along the ground — over the trench, over the slope, into every crenellation of the wall-head. It was not a loud sound, but it was a wide one; it reached under the gates and into the lanes. The sleeping city turned in its sleep without waking.

On the gate tower, Lu Zhu’s hand rested on the stone of a crenellation. The wind came from the north and snapped the hem of his coat against his legs. He looked south: the lamps of the ten towers were still burning; and between tower and tower, over the black open ground, a line of dust had risen — thin, and very long. Cavalry, two wings, moving first. Four months of nights he had stood on this wall and watched the enemy’s fires; he had never once seen that dust-line move before the horn. His fingers tightened on the stone, and let go.

”Now.” He said. ”Open the gate.”

The south gate’s bar was drawn out.

It came out with a long, low grind, and two men carried it to the wall-foot and set it down without a clatter. The gate was opened by Kamon’s own hands. Both leaves had been oiled three times, in the weeks before; open, and they made no sound; close, and they did not shake. Inside the tunnel, two hundred men crouched against the wall-foot, a black mass in the dark, their breath shallow and even, the breath of men who have been taught not to waste air. Somewhere in the blackness a man shifted his weight, and the rustle of cloth ran through the mass and died. A whistle blew once, short: out.

The leading men went first. A-Ka’s crew handed the plank bridges one by one to the mouth of the tunnel; the leaders took them, hunched low, laid a bridge across the trench, and crossed on its heels. The trench was not wide, and the bridges were light — two men to a plank — and in the space of one breath, forty bridges lay across the ground beyond the gate like a road of boards. The soldiers behind trod over them, steps low and quick, streaming out of the gate tunnel like a river poured from its mouth; the sound of their feet was a sound of cloth and soft earth, hardly a sound at all.

Lu Zhu watched from the tower. He watched the two hundred shadows, watched the bridges, watched the black mass of the South Camp beyond them. For four months, every going-out and coming-in of this city had been stolen, hidden, schemed. Tonight, for the first time, it went out in the open, through its own gate, on a road of its own planks. He felt the strangeness of it in his chest, like a man stepping out of a house he has not left for a year.

”Forward.” He said, low. ”Do not look back.”

The fire of the South Camp sank the instant the city gate swung open.

It had not gone out — someone had deliberately pressed the camp-mouth fire low. In the half-light, the camp gate stood ajar, and behind the gap, the stillness was not natural. A camp that wakes to an attack does not stand still; this camp was silent in a way that had been arranged. The half-dark beyond the gate was full of places where men could stand without being seen.

The leading soldiers ran at the head of the column; when they came within thirty paces of the camp gate, their steps slowed half a beat. No one was blind. Four months of war had taught every one of them: a gate standing open, a fire pressed low — that was not a welcome. That was a mouth.

”Slow—” The old soldier at the column’s head shouted only one word.

The arrows came down.

Fifty bows, hidden behind the arrow-loops on either side of the camp gate, loosed at once. The arrows came hissing out of the dark in one sheet; the packed shadows before the gate were the widest target on the field. The foremost soldiers fell where they stood, some without a sound, some with the grunt of a man whose breath has been knocked out by iron. Those behind dropped flat by instinct, and the column scattered into a thin line that hugged the ground.

Then came the blades. Behind the camp gate, two hundred household guards burst out from between the wagons and the barricades — not a word out of them, only the scrape of blades clearing scabbards — and cut at the men on the ground.

Panhesy’s threefold welcome.

The first fold: the wagons beyond the gate, to break the feet. The second fold: the bows on the arrow-loops, to blind the eyes. The third fold: the household guards in the camp’s heart, to take the lives. He had wagered that the men of the city knew how to build walls, not how to charge. When the first rain of arrows came down and the leading files went over, he nearly believed the wager was won. He stood in the dark behind the gate, blade drawn, counting the fall of his own plan with a steady soldier’s mind.

”The general’s plan holds.” Behind the camp gate, the guards’ leader said, low. ”They cannot get in.”

”Wait.” Panhesy gripped his blade, his eyes fixed on the gap in the gate. ”Let them come closer. When they are in the mouth, then close the teeth.”

On the city tower, the tips of Lu Zhu’s fingers went white against the stone of the crenellation.

Below him the leading men were falling at the very foot of the enemy’s gate, and he could reach them with nothing but his voice.

”Archers.” He said. ”Take the arrow-loops first.”

The archers on the wall-head had been at full draw all along, waiting for that word with their shoulders aching in the cold. At the word, arrows poured onto the arrow-loops on either side of the camp gate. The South Camp’s bowmen could not lift their heads; the rain thinned. But behind the wagons at the camp gate, the two hundred guards were still pressing out, and the leading soldiers were being driven back step by step — some had already retreated to the edge of the trench.

It was then that the second horn sounded, from the south.

This one was more urgent than the first, and nearer. On its heels came the sound of hooves — not from the city: from the south. Five hundred cavalry split into two wings; the left wing drove straight at the road by which the East Camp would send relief; the right wing sealed the mouth toward the North Camp. In the middle, one thousand infantry followed one man, climbing up from behind the South Camp.

Horenheb had come.

Panhesy’s camp was built facing the city. Its trench faced the city; its arrow-loops faced the city; its wagons and barricades faced the city. For four months it had guarded against the city, and it had never once considered that its back might catch fire.

The camp exploded. Up front, they were pressing the men of the city; from the rear, a thousand men had suddenly cut in — around the flanks, by the granary sheds, behind the stables, the sound of blades everywhere. The rebel line broke, and a broken line cannot be gathered again.

The East Camp’s relief had left its gate before dawn. Three thousand men, torches raised, drove south over the east slope. They meant to save the South Camp, to close that mouth again. They had not run two li before the left wing’s five hundred horsemen stood across their road.

”Back!” The cavalry centurion reined in, blade upright, and shouted at them. ”One step more, and not one of you lives!”

The three thousand stopped. Their torches wavered in the wind, wavered for a long while — and then, little by little, the whole mass turned and went back into the East Camp, the torchlight draining away up the slope like water running off a roof.

”They,” the centurion said, watching the retreating fire, ”are afraid.”

”Then it is our turn.” Kamon said.

He sprang up off the bridge and ran with his company of craftsmen straight at the camp gate. The craftsmen carried no blades. They carried grappling hooks, pry bars, hammers — the tools that had built every wall in this city. Kamon reached the first wagon before any other man; he drove the pry bar under the wagon’s tongue, set his shoulder against the bar, and shouted ”Up!”, and the wagon toppled over with a crash. The second bar went in; the second wagon went down. Hooks flew out and caught the camp palisade; ten young men heaved together, and the chest-high palisade tore away with a long screech, like a wall pulled down by the roots. Where the palisade had stood, the night air came through.

”See that!” Kamon roared. ”We take down walls for a living — and you thought we could not take down his carts!”

The wagons at the camp gate gone, the breach stood open. The leading soldiers poured through the gap and, with Horenheb’s infantry, tore the South Camp in two from both directions at once.

A-Tu’s boats came alongside at the moment the killing was thickest.

Two boats, hugging the shallows on the west side. He could not tell who was who on the bank; but he could see where the blade-light was densest, and where the crying was most frantic — and in those places lay the wounded who could not be carried. His pole went in and out without a splash. The boatmen took the men aboard one after another — bloody, and silent, with the blank look of men who have used up their fear — laid them on the floorboards, and turned back for the West Bank. Out, and back. Trip after trip.

”The third gate.” A-Tu leaned on his pole and said to his boatmen. ”No one panic. This gate of ours takes in the wounded only — no blades.”

Panhesy was still fighting. He came out of the camp’s heart with a blade in his hand and threw his guards at the enemy twice over. On the second charge, in the crush of the melee, the shaft of a spear swung into his left shoulder and swept him off his horse whole; he hit the ground rolling and came up on one knee, his arm hanging wrong. His guards fought to drag him back into the saddle, wrapped him between them, and fell back east.

”General!” Someone was shouting. ”The camp—”

”Pull out.” Panhesy’s voice was hoarse. ”Pull out for the East Camp.”

He led the remnant out through the camp’s eastern gap. The left-wing cavalry harried them a while, but his men covered the retreat with their lives, and at last the pursuit could not stop them. On the east slope a long plume of dust rose up. Inside the dust, he turned once and looked back. Most of the South Camp was burning — the granary sheds burning fiercest. Four months of grain the rebels had stored, stack after stack sinking low in the firelight.

It was at that moment that the sky grew light. The first sun came over the east slope and laid itself along the ground, gilding the burning camp and the city with its open gates.

The South Camp changed hands; it began with a wisp of black smoke.

The people inside the city had heard the horn. They had heard the killing. They had heard the last shouting — the shouting that the South Camp was broken. In the Haven of Settled Lives, the children sat up on their straw pallets and pricked their ears. In the market, the men who rose early to draw water stood at the lane mouths and looked toward the south gate. No one cheered. Four months of war had taught the people of this city to read the color of the smoke before they said a word.

The smoke was black, and it rose straight up, thick and even. That was no household cooking fire.

”Broken.” The chief officiant stood at the door of the old temple and said. ”The camp to the south — broken.”

Behind him, the light of the eternal lamps swayed, once.

The peace boards were changed at the Chen hour.

The chief officiant had the old boards taken down, and the new boards carried only three words: ”The siege is lifted.” Those who could not read had the words read to them, once, twice. It was not until the words had been read out a third time that someone in the lanes let out a long breath — the breath of four months, and it came out trembling.

”Lifted?” An old woman asked, gripping her doorframe. ”Truly lifted?”

”Lifted.” The warden said. ”The camp to the south has been leveled by our own men. From now on, the grain, the medicine, the boats — all of it comes by the open road.”

”Then... can my man go outside the city walls and sell dates again?”

”Wait two more days.” The warden said. ”East and north, there are still men squatting in their camps. The gate opens by day; by night, it closes again.”

The old woman nodded, and opened her door half a span wider. Sunlight fell into the main room, onto a sack of dates that had been saved through four months.

The wounded were carried back after dawn.

The lane behind the south gate had become the field hospital’s corridor in a single night. Stretcher after stretcher came through; Imset stood at the lane mouth and looked at each one, his eyes moving over the faces with the practiced speed of a man who has learned to tell, in one glance, which wounds will wait and which will not. The badly wounded were carried in first; the lightly wounded were bound up where they stood. Neht crouched in a little shop that had become a dressing station, his small bronze knife and his jars of salve laid out before him, his hands steadier than the lamp-shadows around him. He worked without hurry, the way a man works when he has learned that a steady hand is a medicine of its own.

In the stretcher party there was a young man carrying another young man. The one being carried had a bandaged leg, the blood soaked through to the cloth. The carrier’s face was shaped like the carried one’s — they were brothers — and the carrier had a fresh cut across his left cheek, still welling at the corner. He carried his brother the way a man carries something he does not trust to anyone else’s arms.

At the lane mouth, an old warden of sixty-odd years stood holding a lantern. The lantern should have been put away long before — the sky was already light. But he held it still, the way a man holds the one thing he began saving the night his two sons went out through the gate with the two hundred.

No one had seen him arrive at the lane mouth; no one thought to ask him to leave.

”Father.” The carrier called out. His voice cracked on the word.

The old warden did not answer. He walked over and looked first at the one on the stretcher. He looked for a long time. Then he reached out and pressed his palm against the boy’s forehead. It was warm. Only then did he nod, and say: ”It is good that you came back.”

He blew out the lantern, tucked it behind his back, and turned to help carry the stretcher. His steps were steady, his back straight — as if he had poured all the strength of his sixty-odd years into this one stretch of road.

”How many came back?” Lu Zhu asked at the gate.

”One hundred and seventy-six.” The adjutant’s voice was heavy. ”Two hundred went out. One hundred and seventy-six came back. Forty-seven are wounded. Twenty-four did not come back.”

Lu Zhu did not answer. He stood at the gate for a long time. On the ground of the gate tunnel lay a little mud the bridges had brought in, and a few things that had fallen from some man’s kit — half a belt, one straw sandal. He picked up the sandal and turned it in his hands — a plain thing, worn soft at the heel by four months of use — carried it to the wall-foot beside the gate, and set it straight.

”The men,” he said. ”Write down every one of them, name by name.”

”It is being written.” The adjutant said. He had a fresh sheet of papyrus on his knee; the names were going down one by one, in the small careful hand of a man writing a roll he means to keep.

In the field hospital, Shafi had a new medicine ledger open before noon.

The old ledger had kept the ”war account”: all wound medicine moved to the south gate, staunching cloth issued by the pack. On the first page of the new ledger she wrote what the night had spent — one hundred and seventeen packs of staunching cloth, two and a half chests of wound medicine, and every boiled cloth strip in the place, used to the last. When it was written she stared at the rows of figures, and her brush paused after the words ”wound medicine.” The shelves behind her had whole empty places in them, the way a mouth has empty places where teeth have been drawn.

”Will it hold?” Imset asked.

”Before, it held twelve days.” Shafi said. ”One night has taken a small part of it.” She closed the ledger. ”But Merchant Meru’s boats have reached the beach. There is medicine on them. Before noon it enters the transfer depot; before sunset it will be on the hospital shelves.”

”Then there is nothing to fear.” Imset said. ”When the ledger holds a figure, and the shelves hold the medicine, men have ground under them.”

”Ground.” Shafi said. She squared the new ledger on the corner of the table, and added one more line: ”From this day, this account is balanced every day, like the grain account.”

”Yes.” Imset said. ”Grain has its net. Medicine must have its net too.”

In the Haven’s kitchen, the fires burned from morning to night that day.

Nefer had roused all three of the women’s teams before dawn, and the kitchen yard had the hum of a hive from first light. The cooks boiled water and made porridge — one pot for the wounded, one for the prisoners, one for the craftsmen tearing down the camp. The shelter-keepers went door to door: whose husband had gone out of the city in the night, whose child still waited for news — all of it kept in their minds, the way of women who have learned that memory is the one ledger that cannot be closed. The needleworkers rolled cloth strips until their hands blurred, and by dark had sent two full baskets of them to the field hospital.

”Listen well, all of you.” Nefer stood before the kitchen, her voice bright and full. ”The men fought the battle. The ground behind it is ours. The wounded need hot porridge; the prisoners need a drink of water; and in the houses of the men who did not come back, someone must go and ask. No one sits idle.”

”Aunt Nefer,” a young wife asked, low. ”They say of the two hundred who went out... one hundred and seventy-six came back?”

”One hundred and seventy-six came back.” Nefer said. ”The rest are the men who held the gate open for this city. Their doors, we hold open for them from now on.” She paused, and her voice dropped. ”Work first. Remember them all, but work first.”

The young wife asked nothing more. She rolled up her sleeves, went to the pot, and stirred the porridge ladle by ladle. The steam rose and struck her face, and made the wetness in her eyes glitter. She did not wipe it; she only stirred on, until the wetness dried of itself.

Mery’s list began to run after dawn.

Page one was Repair. The south gate’s tunnel had to be done over; the burned South Camp had to be cleared; the trench beyond the walls and the plank bridges had to be put back in order. The craftsmen had barely stepped down from the front line; they caught their breath, drank one dipper of water each, and went back to work, their hammers finding their old rhythm as if the night had never happened. This time, what they dismantled was the South Camp — the palisades the rebels had raised, their wagons, their barricades, the sheds that had held their stores. Every timber that could still be used was pulled out piece by piece, passed from hand to hand out of the wreckage, and stacked on the open ground beyond the city. The charred smell of the fire hung over the work all day.

Three days of dismantling piled up a small lumber yard. Good timber went with good: what could carry a beam became a beam; what could carry a column became a column. Second-grade timber went with its own kind: what was burned halfway was split for firewood; what had lost its edge was bedded under wall-footings. Not a stick was thrown away — these men had spent four months learning what the lack of one beam costs. Kamon set up a wooden board at the yard, and on the board he painted three compartments, and above the compartments three words: Beam. Column. Firewood.

”Four months,” he said, slapping the board until it rang, ”we tore down the ruined houses of this city day and night to patch its walls. Now, for the first time, we tear down another man’s works to feed our own yard.” His arm was bound in cloth — he had scraped it in the night fighting, and he thought nothing of it. ”Not one stick of this timber is to be wasted. The Haven has to grow; the south wall has to be patched; the northern line needs boats. Every one of these will use it.”

”Uncle Kamon,” a young craftsman asked, ”do those palisades the rebels built even count as works?”

”They count.” Kamon said. ”Anything men raise, counts. They raised their palisades to cage people in; we tear them down to give people room. The same timber — not the same hands.” He crouched, drew a charred palisade stake out of the pile, and knocked his knuckles against the broken end. ”See this — jujube wood, hard as iron. They wasted it on a cage. We will split it into splints later, for the hospital to bind arms with.”

Page two was Clearing. The dead had to be buried; some were burned, some were buried, against the plague — the pyres and the graves dug side by side on the open ground, the work done without talk by men who had fought among the dead the night before. Page three was Replenishing — grain, medicine, water. Woser’s keys opened the granary’s back door first of all. Cart after cart of grain rolled out of the storehouse and headed south of the city, their wheels grinding the road in a steady chain; the soldiers of the army camp had chased the enemy all night and gone hungry all night too, and the first pot of hot porridge reached the slope before noon, carried up by four men who set it down steaming at the head of the files.

”Eat slowly.” The ration-server said. ”There is more in the pot.”

”This porridge,” a soldier said, cradling his bowl in both hands, warming his palms on it, ”is sweeter than last night’s dry bread.”

”Sweeter, nothing.” The ration-server said. ”It is because you won. Whatever a winner eats comes to him hot.”

From that day, the grain bound for the army camp traveled by the open road. Before, it had moved by night, winding through the side channels, dodging patrols — fifty li of road that used to take a whole night. Now the carts rolled in line, out through the south gate in full daylight, and the trip took one double-hour. The same men guarded the loads; but the covering cloth was thrown back halfway, and anyone could see — this was grain, plain grain, with nothing hidden. In the old days the axles had been muffled in cloth; now they sang out loud. The people at the lane mouths watched the carts go by; the sight of the open loads said what no announcement could have said.

”Look at that,” an old caravan hand said to the newcomer beside him. ”Before, this grain had to be tucked away and hidden. Now it rolls in the open. What do you call that? I call it our grain road grown hard.”

The prisoners were counted in the morning.

The South Camp had surrendered two thousand three hundred. They crouched on the open ground beyond the city, a black stretch of them, their eyes on the ground. The adjutant registered them with his men, name by name, village by village; the wardens under the chief officiant helped alongside, calling out the questions in the patient voices of men who have taken many registrations. Among the surrendered were old men, half-grown boys, men with bound wounds. No one spoke. They only crouched, and watched the people of the city pass before them, and waited for whatever was going to happen next. Four months had worn most of the soldiering out of them; what was left was hunger, and waiting.

”Water first.” Lu Zhu said. He had come down from the gate to stand at the edge of the open ground, and his voice carried without being raised. ”Then food. The rest, slowly.”

When the water went down among them — carried in jars and gourds by the city’s own people — a man suddenly burst into tears. It was a half-grown boy, his face still smeared with pot-black from some cookhouse. He gripped the gourd ladle, drinking and weeping at once, the water running over his chin and into his collar — no one could tell which was water and which was tears, and the boy himself could not have told either. Some of the crouching men looked up at the sound of his crying, and looked down again.

”Drink up this ladle,” the chief officiant said, crouching before him, ”and you are no longer a rebel. You are a man of this city. How you live from now on — that is yours to choose.”

The boy said nothing. He only held the ladle tight against his chest, both arms around it, the way a child holds the one warm thing he has been given.

At the beach west of the gate, boats were received in daylight for the first time.

Meru’s little fleet came in at the Chen hour. Four boats, carrying grain, medicine, lime. When the boatmen dropped anchor, their hands shook a little — for months they had crept along side channels, slipped through reed beds, dodged patrols, their oars muffled and their voices whispers. Today, for the first time in four months, they had come down the open river in full daylight and laid their prows on the beach, and some of them laughed out loud for no reason at all. The sun was well up by then; the hulls rode high and easy, their long shadows trailing over the bright water.

”Password?” The tally-clerk on the dock called out.

”Gone.” Meru said. He stood in the bow and knocked out his pipe. ”From today, this stretch of river does not trade countersigns. The West Bank’s ’smoke’ is a ’boat’ now.”

A crowd of children had gathered at the edge of the beach to watch, hanging on their mothers’ skirts and the dock posts. One boy tugged at his mother’s hem and asked: ”Mother, why do these boats come without sneaking anymore?”

”Because the war is won.” His mother said. ”No more hiding.”

”Will they come tomorrow?”

”They will.” The tally-clerk put in, laughing. ”From now on, they come every day. This river belongs to us again.”

The children looked at the boats, then at one another, and began to count the sacks aloud.

Meru stepped ashore and stood on the beach, looking north. Over the river to the north, the mist had not lifted; it lay in a long white band across the water, and in it, faint and far, the shape of the rebels’ river-patrol boats could still be made out. The river was open only halfway.

”Half,” he said, low, ”is enough.”

He drew out the river map that had ridden at his belt for four months and spread it over the gunwale. On it, side channel after side channel, reed bed after reed bed — every line bought with lives, some of them by men who never came back from the drawing. He studied it a while; then, with a charcoal stick, he drew one thick, straight line down the main channel, from the beach west of the gate to the West Bank.

”This line,” he said to the boatmen, who had gathered around the map, ”from today, is traveled by daylight. The crooked little channels on this map stay for now. When the north is settled too, we will rub them out one by one.”

”Boss,” Shunzi asked, peering at the map, ”when they are rubbed out, will the map not be empty?”

”Empty is good.” Meru said. He rolled the map up slowly, the way a man rolls up a thing he means to keep. ”When the map is empty, the river is full.”

Horenheb entered the city at noon.

He brought no troops — only two attendants — and rode in through the south gate. The soldiers on guard straightened as one man when they saw him; the word ran down the wall before him, man to man, like a line of fire. He dismounted before the gate and looked up at it: the tunnel was newly rebuilt, and the chisel marks still stood fresh and pale on the wall-sockets. He read the new work the way a builder reads another builder’s hand. He reached out and patted the brick of the tunnel, the way a man pats the shoulder of an old comrade.

”This gate,” he said, ”was opened well.”

Lu Zhu was waiting below the tower. The two men stood in the tunnel of the south gate — one in armor, one in plain cloth. For four months they had exchanged a dozen letters, played one game across a river — the city against the camp, the wall against the siege — and never once looked on each other’s faces. What they knew of each other was writing — plans, numbers, the shape of each other’s thoughts. A face was still a stranger’s.

”Lu Zhu.” Horenheb spoke first.

”General.”

”Do not call me general.” Horenheb said. ”The war is not over. I am a wall-builder.”

”A wall-builder.” Lu Zhu said. ”Four months ago you built walls on the western line. Now the wall has come south of the city.”

”Wherever the wall goes,” Horenheb said, ”I go.” He paused, and his voice turned grave. ”I came into the city to say one thing: the South Camp is leveled and the siege is lifted. But east and north, more than twenty thousand men are still squatting in their camps. They are hungry — and the blades are still in their fists. Give the city half a month to catch its breath. When it has caught it, we talk about the last battle.”

”I was thinking the same.” Lu Zhu said. ”The grain must rest, the men must rest, the wall must rest. Rest is not stopping — it is making ready for the next fight.”

Horenheb nodded. He swung onto his horse, gathered the reins, and rode a few paces toward the gate — then turned his head once more. ”The boy Seb has been writing to you from the north, has he not?”

”He has.”

”Tell him,” Horenheb said, ”the wall in the south — his teacher is keeping it for him. The wall in the north — let him watch it well. Before the snow falls, that side must not fall.” He said it the way a man gives a thing into another man’s keeping.

The hoofbeats went away, out through the tunnel and onto the open road. Lu Zhu stood in the gate tunnel and watched the riders pass out through the south gate, heading for the army camp.

”Two men who build walls,” he said, low, ”standing under one wall, talking — that is a first.” He stood a moment longer, his hand on the new brick of the tunnel; then he turned and walked back into the city.

The market came alive the next day.

The lane had the feel of a house opening its windows after a long winter.

The first stall was set out by the old man who sold dates. He carried his sack — the sack that had been saved through four months — to his old place at the lane mouth and spread the dates in three piles on a clean cloth: the large dates, the small dates, the sun-withered dates. The prices were the same as before the siege, written on a small board propped against the sack.

”Drop it two coppers,” someone said, leaning in, weighing a date in his hand. ”Four months old, those dates.”

”Old?” The old man split a date open, showing the golden flesh, the pit gleaming with moisture. ”Smell it. Through four months of siege, not one of my dates went damp. I turned them every three days, in the driest corner of the house. Why should I drop the price?”

The man smelled it, laughed, and paid for half a jin of them. By midday, a queue had formed before the date stall; people bought dates and ate them standing, the way people eat a thing that tastes of peacetime.

”These dates,” a woman buying said, ”are sweet. Sweeter than they used to be.”

”It is not the dates that are sweet.” The old man said. ”It is the days.”

The water-sellers, the flatbread-sellers, the knife-grinders — stall after stall followed him out. The more stalls opened, the more people came, and the lane came alive; the smell of hot bread went up into the morning. The lane filled until shoulders brushed; it was a sound the city had almost forgotten it could make. A boy ran the whole length of the market holding up half a flatbread, shouting: ”My mother says the gate is open by day now! We can go out!” Half the market turned at the shout, and the older men smiled in spite of themselves.

”Out, but no running wild.” An adult chased after him. ”East and north, the rebels are still squatting there!”

”What about the south?”

”The south,” the adult said, ”is ours. From now on, when you leave the city, you leave by the south gate.”

The boy nodded, and bit off a great mouthful of bread. Sunlight fell over the market and warmed the color in every face.

But the people of the city knew it too: these days come back to life were bought by two hundred men, in one night.

On the wall-foot below the south gate tower, someone had written two lines in whitewash. The writing was crooked — it had been written by night: ”The South Camp is leveled; the four gates stand open. Remember the men who went out — do not forget the men who held the lamps.”

No one wiped it off. Passers-by glanced at it as they went about their errands, or bowed once to it, or stood before it a moment in silence and then went on. No one ever learned whose hand had written it. The chief officiant saw it, stood a while, and said: ”Leave it. This city must remember.”

The transfer depot’s door was not closed all day.

The clerks worked in shifts. Grain went in. Medicine went in. Lime went in. And the accounts were written line by line: the depot wrote one entry, the official granary wrote one entry, and Mery’s general ledger wrote one entry. Only when the three entries agreed was the cargo counted as landed; if the counts differed by so much as one sack, the tally was called out and counted again, there on the threshold. The clerks said that nowadays a cargo of goods entered the storehouse to closer checking than a man passed through the city gate.

”The closer the better.” Mery said, looking up from the ledger. ”The war is not over.”

Woser was busier than anyone that day. He worked at the far end of the courtyard table with his own lamp and his own stack of lists, and his counting-rods moved quicker than anyone’s now — thirty years of handling them had made his hands faster than his eyes, and his eyes faster than his tongue. When the south line’s cargo lists arrived, he worked them once; when the army camp’s grain requisition came, he worked them again. When it was dark and the rods had clicked through the evening, the old man rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands and laughed: ”These rods of mine are sharper than my nose now.”

”Uncle Woser,” Mery said. ”Your nose minds one granary. Your rods mind the granaries of all Egypt. Both have to be sharp, or nothing holds.”

”It holds.” Woser said. ”Tonight, I go on counting.” He reached for the next list, and the rods clicked on into the night.

Mery’s new ledger was worked out by night.

He sat alone at the long table when the courtyard had emptied, the lamp drawn close, and worked the day’s figures into their places the way a mason works stones into a wall. Figures that did not fit were taken out and laid again; a ledger is a wall that must carry weight. The siege was lifted, and the account had only grown larger — larger, and stranger in shape. Before, the city had been a mouth: it took in, and gave out nothing, and the whole art had been in the taking. Now the city was a heart; the blood had to be pumped to both arms at once — south, to the five thousand men of the army camp; north, to the soldiers of the northern border, to Seb’s craftsmen, and to the grain convoy walking the snow road.

”The south line has eased.” He told Lu Zhu, who had come in from the gate and stood turning the pages of the sheepskin by the lamp. ”With the siege lifted, the army camp is merged into the south line’s account. Merchant Meru’s boats can run three trips in ten days. The city’s grain can hold until spring.”

”The north line?”

”The north line is still that clock.” Mery said. ”Forty days of grain, walked down to its bottom by today. The new capital’s granaries must send one more consignment north — that one is the north’s life for the winter.”

As he spoke he drew a page of sheepskin from under the table — the first receipt of the north line to complete the whole journey. The grain convoy had left the West Bank’s granaries, passed supply point after supply point, and at each point a mark had been drawn against it, in the different hands of different keepers. At the border wall, the governor had signed the receipt; the receipt had come back along the road, mark by mark, each one tight against the next. Mery had kept it under his hand all day, the way a man keeps a letter he does not want to lose.

”Look here.” Mery pointed at the row of marks. ”Every time a grain cart passed a point, it left a mark behind. More than forty points, not one missing. What do you call that? I call it the grain road open. From the new capital to the border wall — more than a thousand li — and now it is beads strung on one cord. Pull the cord at either end, and every bead answers.”

”And Old Camel’s letter?”

”The letter is here.” Mery drew it out from under the receipt and smoothed it flat on the table. ”He writes that the grain arrived, and Seb’s craftsmen ate their first full meal. Old Camel writes the way he drives a cart — plain, steady, nothing wasted. Beyond the wall, the Hittite camp’s smoke is thicker than it was days ago. He says the sky in the north is lead-grey, lead-grey — and the snow is pressing just behind the clouds.”

”So,” Lu Zhu said, ”the south cannot drag.”

”It cannot drag.” Mery said. ”But it cannot hurry either. The rebels have pulled back into the East Camp and the North Camp — more than twenty thousand mouths, more than twenty thousand blades. They are hungry, and they still hold their blades. To throw ourselves at them now is to trade lives for lives.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He walked to the table and studied the two maps lying side by side — the works south of the city, and the grain road of the north line. He looked for a long time, his hand resting on the maps; then, suddenly, he said: ”Mery, have you noticed? Four months ago we counted out ’how to bring the grain in.’ Now we count out ’how to send the grain out.’”

”Yes.” Mery said. ”When it came in, grain was life. When it goes out, grain is a blade.”

”Then let the blade,” Lu Zhu said, ”be ground sharp.”

Meru came into the city to settle accounts the next day.

He came up from the dock with his ledger under his arm and his pipe cold in his other hand, and the two accountants sat down at one table for the first time. Meru’s ledger was stained with grease, its page-corners curled from the damp of the river; Mery’s ledger was written in a neat hand, not one page blotted. The two books lay side by side, and the entries were matched from the south line’s boats to the transfer depot’s cargo, line by line, tight as a seam. For a while the two men worked without talk; the only sounds were the scratch of the brush and the click of the rods. When a figure matched, Mery drew a small hook beside it; when one did not, the two men went back over it together, Meru’s finger following the line of his own rough hand.

”Merchant Meru,” Mery said. ”Your ledger is still written with your pipe.”

”And yours,” Meru said, knocking out his pipe against the table leg with a laugh, ”is still kept with counting-rods. Well kept. You have worked four months of muddled accounts into a net.”

”The net was not woven by me.” Mery said. ”It was woven by the boats, and the carts, and the West Bank’s village granaries, and the new capital’s official granaries, and the north’s supply points — each one weaving its own corner. I only gathered all the threads into my hands.”

”Whosever hands hold the threads,” Meru said, ”hold the net.” He paused, and his voice lost its trader’s edge. ”Before, I gathered threads to sell at a good price. Now the threads are in your hands, and the net is for the whole country. That is a different thing.”

”Different or not,” Mery said, ”it comes down to whose hands the grain reaches.”

Meru said nothing. He lit his pipe from a coal of the brazier, the smoke curling up into the afternoon light. ”Whose hands it reaches, I cannot mind that much. I only mind one thing — the boats. Not one trip is to be missed.”

”The boats will not miss.” Mery said. ”From now on the south line runs three trips in seven days, and every trip is checked against the list. If the list does not match, the grain does not land.” He said it the way he said everything about the ledgers — a statement of how the world would be ordered from this day.

”Done.” Meru said. ”A trader’s worst fear is having no fixed numbers. This list of yours is the surest number in all Egypt.” He took his ledger under his arm and went out, and the smoke of his pipe hung in the air behind him.

That night, Lu Zhu went to the field hospital.

He crossed the empty ground before it alone, his steps slow on the packed earth. In the open ground before it, the lamp that never went out was still burning, hanging from its iron bracket where it had hung since the first night of the siege. The wind leaned the flame this way and that, but the fire never once leaned off its wick. Imset stood under the lamp, reading Shafi’s new ledger by its light. When he saw Lu Zhu, he handed the book over without a word: ”The first night in four months — this ledger records the inflow.”

Lu Zhu turned the pages. Staunching cloth, in. Wound medicine, in. Firewood for boiling cloth, in — Meru’s boats had come trip after trip, paying back everything the hospital had gone without for four months, until the empty places filled row by row.

”The lamp is still burning.” Lu Zhu said.

”Burning.” Imset said. ”This lamp has not gone out since the first day of the siege. Last night it lit the road for the men who went out. Tonight it lights the road for the men who came back.”

Lu Zhu did not answer. He stood under the lamp and looked up. The one point of fire stood steady in the night wind — like the gathered breath of every man in this city who had not yet slept.

”This lamp,” he said after a long while, ”must go on burning. The war is not over; the lamp cannot go out.”

”It will not go out.” Imset said.

The letter from the north arrived that evening, brought in through the south gate with the dust of the road still on it.

Seb’s letter was even shorter than Old Camel’s — the hand was Seb’s own, cramped and careful, the hand of a boy writing by firelight after a day of work. He wrote that the frozen earth of the border was harder than he had imagined — harder than any earth he had dug in the south — and the first stretch of wall was already standing, its courses level in spite of the frost. He wrote that the Hittite camp beyond the wall had been strangely quiet these two days — no drills, no shouting, only the smoke of their fires going up and up — and quiet was not a good sign. Before the snow fell, the north would move.

At the end of the letter there was a single line, written larger than the rest: ”Teacher, I have heard what happened in the south. I am still raising the wall.”

Lu Zhu read the letter twice, folded it along its old creases, and put it away in his coat, against his chest. He walked into the courtyard; the sky was already darkening. On the city wall, the torches were lighting one after another, making the south gate bright as day. Beyond the gate, the craftsmen dismantling the camp had not knocked off yet — the sound of hammers and saws came in on the night wind, stroke by stroke, unhurried — the sound of work that knows it will be finished.

”The south lets out one breath,” he said, low, ”and the north tightens one. This war is pulled at both ends.” He looked up. Cloud lay on cloud overhead, moving north. Under that northern sky stood Seb’s wall, and Old Camel’s carts, and the Hittite camp — and a clock that walked faster than any man.

”That clock,” he said. ”The south must be settled before it strikes.”

In the North Camp’s cookhouse, that night was quieter than usual.

The cook’s ladle sank slower with every bowl; the scrape of it on the pot bottom was the only sound in the steam. The porridge in the pot was thin enough to mirror a man’s face; when the ladle broke the surface, the reflection broke with it. The soldiers queued with their bowls, filing past one by one, their feet shuffling in the packed earth. One soldier held his bowl up to the firelight and studied its bottom, as if the answer to some question might be written there. No one asked why it was so thin — they all knew. The South Camp was gone. The South Camp’s grain was gone with it — burned, or taken.

An old soldier crouched outside the cookhouse, drinking his half bowl of porridge in three slow mouthfuls, with a little left over. He stared at the northern sky over the rim of the bowl, and said suddenly: ”This porridge is thinner every day. Thin it a little more, and it will no longer mirror a man — only the sky.”

No one beside him answered. Only the fire under the pot went on licking the iron in the dark.

In the great camp at the river bend, Nekhem heard the report of the South Camp’s defeat and was a long time silent.

The man in the white robe read the war report to the end and withdrew to one side of the tent. Nekhem had moved every piece on that table himself, night after night; the lamp lit the sand table and the little city upon it — walls of packed sand, a river of blue-grey powder, the granaries and the temple marked by tiny stakes. From the city’s southern side, a small banner had been pulled out, leaving only a shallow pit in the sand.

”And Panhesy?” Nekhem asked.

”He has fallen back into the East Camp.” The white robe said. ”He took a blow on the shoulder, but he is still on his feet. Most of the camp’s grain is burned.”

”Grain.” Nekhem repeated the word. He walked to the sand table, reached out, and with the pad of his finger smoothed the little pit over, slowly, until the sand lay level. The pit was flat again; the city on the sand table had become a whole city once more.

”For four months,” he said, slowly, ”I cut off their water — they dug wells. I burned their grain — they hid grain among the people. I broke their walls — they mended walls. And now they have opened their gates and bring the grain in by daylight.” He paused. ”This battle — we did not lose it under the city walls. We lost it because their grain is more alive than ours.”

Outside the tent, the morning wind lifted the curtain a finger’s width. From the direction of the cookhouse, the smell of thin porridge drifted in on the wind.

”Pass the order.” Nekhem said. ”Every camp cuts its rations by another two-tenths. The camp’s grain must hold until the snow falls.” He said it without turning; his eyes stayed on the little city in the sand.

The man in the white robe opened his mouth — and in the end did not ask what was in his mind: cut by two-tenths, hold until the snow — and then what? When the snow fell and the Hittites moved and the northern fire caught, could the south turn itself over again?

He wanted to ask. He did not dare. Because he knew the High Priest himself could not answer it.
