Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 82: Chapter 4: Water Runs Short — Shallow Wells Are Dug

The water gate south of the city was where it happened, in the first gray of the morning.

The old soldier who kept the water gate had felt something wrong since midnight. He had slept badly for years — the habit of the watch — and he knew the sound of the aqueduct’s flow the way a man knows the breathing of his own house: on ordinary days a steady ”swish, swish,” even as a man’s breathing, filling the stone basin and spilling out over the intake lip. That night the sound had been growing thinner, thinner and thinner, until it was no more than a thread; and toward dawn, the thread broke. The silence that followed was a silence he had never heard in thirty years of watching the water.

He ran out in his coat, without lacing it, without his sandals. At the water intake south of the city, the stone basin held only a skin of water. The slabs of the basin’s floor showed through, wet and shining, as if something had licked them clean.

”The water’s cut!” He shouted, his voice cracking. ”The aqueduct’s cut!”

That one shout woke half the city. Doors opened along the lanes; heads appeared in the gray light; and within the hour, every household that had not filled its jars the day before was out and running.

Before the sky was fully light, the line at the water gate had formed. Water carriers with shoulder poles, people with jars, people clutching clay bottles — the line ran from the gate to the end of the street, then bent into the lanes. Those who came late looked at the length of the line, and their faces went white.

”By noon, will there be even half a jar left?” A woman asked. Her jar was new, fired the year before; she had brought it for the first time, holding it against her chest the way a mother holds a child. No one answered her; the question hung in the air, and the line in front of her shifted forward one step, then another, and the silence of the line was its own answer.

At the head of the line, a commotion broke out. Two men were grappling; a carrying pole and wooden buckets rolled across the ground. One shouted ”I was here first!” The other shouted ”You stepped on my bucket!” — and in the heat of it the two of them rolled into the stone basin, coming up smeared with the mud of the basin floor. The mud was cold and slimy, and the two men stood in the empty basin like caught fish, and for a moment everyone stared at the dry bottom behind them.

The adjutant arrived with his soldiers and pulled the two men apart. His face was heavier than the mud on the basin floor:

”Stand in line, all of you! There’s a way to get water — but people must not fall apart first!”

The crowd was quiet for one moment. But in that moment, several hundred pairs of eyes were fixed on the stone basin. It was dry to the bottom.

Water was life. The thought stood in every mind at once, and no one needed to say it aloud.

On the first day of the water shortage, A-Bu’s water reached its highest price in twenty years.

Men ran after his buckets with copper coins in their hands; one bucket went for the price of ten barley cakes, and the coins kept coming. A-Bu carried his load, stopping and starting. He was, after all, a man who sold things for a living — his whole trade was buying water with effort and selling it for a little more — and when the price reached fifteen barley cakes, he wavered. The coins were in his hand, and the water was in his buckets, and the exchange was only the shape his life had always taken.

”A-Bu!” An old woman called to him from a lane mouth. ”You’ve sold water on this lane for thirty years. Is there a single household here that hasn’t owed you? Can you really raise the price on this water?”

A-Bu’s shoulders sagged, as if the yoke had suddenly grown heavier. He set the buckets down, scooped out a gourd of water, and held it out to the old woman: ”Auntie, yours — free.” The old woman took it in both hands, and her hands trembled, and she drank it in small sips, holding the gourd carefully so that not a drop spilled. What was left, A-Bu carried up onto the wall — for the men repairing it, who worked with their throats open to the dust. He went up the ramp slowly, the yoke creaking, and the men on the wall drank the water standing, passing the gourd from hand to hand without a word.

”From now on,” he said, when he came back, ”the water stays at the old price. I’ve sold water in Thebes for thirty years. I can’t sell my conscience at a time like this.”

The people in the lane said nothing. But several households poured out half a jar from their own stores, and pressed it on the children of the neighbors who had not gotten water. The giving was done quietly, without ceremony, the way such things are done in a lane that has known one another’s troubles for a generation.

The half jar stood in front of the child. The child did not drink first — he pushed it toward his mother. His mother said: ”Mother’s already drunk.” Only then did the child lift the jar, and sip, small mouthful by small mouthful; between sips he looked up at the faces around him, as if afraid that if he drank too fast, the water would be gone. The jar lasted a long time at that pace, and when it was empty, the child held it upside down and let the last drops fall on his tongue.

A-Bu passed with his empty buckets, and his step faltered. He did not turn his head; he only tightened the rope on his carrying pole, one more knot — a small motion, but the lane knew what it meant. The old water seller had made his choice, and he was binding it on.

The disorder of the water shortage showed itself within half a day.

Word went around that several great households south of the city kept whole jars of water in their cellars, with stone slabs laid over the tops. The word spread — and men who had failed to draw water gathered at the lane mouths, saying they wanted to ”borrow water.” The word ”borrow” hung in the air with a second meaning, and the crowd at the lane mouths grew.

The adjutant brought soldiers and asked Lu Zhu what to do. Lu Zhu said: ”Don’t search. Don’t seize. The water is theirs; hoarding is the state of the heart. Search one household, and every jar in the city gets moved somewhere else, and the hiding starts. A heart in turmoil is worse than no water at all.”

”Then we let them hoard?” The adjutant asked.

”We let them.” Lu Zhu said. ”When the new wells come up and the whole city has water, the households that hoarded will understand it for themselves — their jars can hold one family, but they cannot hold a city. A jar is a jar; a city is a river. The river will teach them.” He paused, and looked at the adjutant. ”A hoarder is not an enemy. He is a frightened man with a jar. Frightened men are cured by water, not by soldiers.”

That day, Lu Zhu had the wardens count the water jars of every household. No confiscation; only registration — the wardens went door to door, and the heads of households counted their jars out loud, and the numbers went down in the books. When the count was done, Lu Zhu wrote in his notebook: the whole city holds three thousand one hundred and seventy-four water jars. Jars — these are the vessels that hold water. Once there is water, every one of these jars can be filled.

Lu Zhu reached the water gate half a stick of incense later.

He did not push into the crowd. He squatted at the edge of the basin first. The mud at the bottom was still wet, and the mud’s surface was marked with the retreat of the water — layer upon layer, like the scales of a fish, each line a stage of the night’s falling. He reached in, pinched up a bit of the mud, and worked it between his fingers, feeling the grain of it; then he brought it to his nose and smelled it.

”The aqueduct was cut from upstream.” He stood up, and said to the adjutant: ”This is not a drought. A drought draws down slowly, day by day, and the mud dries in the sun. This went to the bottom in one night, and the mud is still wet — someone has shut the sluice gate.”

The adjutant’s face changed: ”The gate is two li outside the wall, inside the rebels’ camp. They—”

”They’ve shut it.” Lu Zhu said. ”They surround the city, and cut the water first. That step was coming sooner or later. It was on the map before the siege began — I drew the circle around that gate myself.”

That morning, Lu Zhu went over the city’s water accounts afresh.

He walked with Kamon from the south of the city to the north, and looked at all twenty-four old wells, one by one. Each well: a look into the dark mouth, a note in the book. The queues at every well-head were several times longer than usual, stretching around corners; the ropes went down, and after a long time came up with water that was mostly mud, with little clear in it. At several wells, the water that came up barely covered the bucket’s bottom, and the eyes of the people waiting behind went wide and dull, and the line thinned by the afternoon.

At the sixth well south of the city, the water came up yellow, and the old man who kept the well said the bottom of that well was silted up by half a foot — he had felt it with the bucket, the way a man feels the bottom of a river with a pole. The ninth well north of the city fared worst: the rope went down to the end, and the bucket brought up only a hand’s depth of water, the rope coming up slack in the hand. The people in line craned their necks to see — and then, heads bowed, drifted away, one by one, without a word. The sound of the empty buckets knocking against the well-head was the only sound they left behind.

Only the well in the back courtyard of the old temple, on the high ground east of the city, was as it had always been. Lau drew water there, bucket after bucket, and the water line did not fall; the buckets came up full and clear. The neighbors had long coveted that well — but the temple gate was still shut, and the royal soldiers stood at it, and no one dared go in.

Lu Zhu stood outside the temple gate for a while, and did not go in. In his notebook he wrote: the back-courtyard well — water line not fallen; low ground; lies against the old river channel.

”That’s the one,” he thought. ”Every well in the city has gone shallow; this one hasn’t. That means the water is underground — just farther from the surface than the old wells reach. Find the right place, and dig down. The water did not leave; the wells left it.”

A-Bu was waiting at the old well inside the west gate with his water yoke. When he saw Lu Zhu, he set the yoke down and said: ”Master Builder, give me a word. Is this water coming back, or not?”

”It’s coming back.” Lu Zhu said. ”Just slowly.”

”Slowly means it wears a man out.” A-Bu wiped his brow. ”I’ve sold water for thirty years, and this is the first time I’ve seen the whole city’s wells give so little in a whole day. At this rate, in three days, forget washing clothes — there won’t be enough to cook with. I know the numbers of this city’s thirst; I’ve carried them on my shoulder for thirty years.”

”Three days.” Lu Zhu repeated. He wrote two words in his notebook: three days.

That night, Lu Zhu called everyone who mattered to the back courtyard of the official granary.

The chief officiant came, wrapped in his white robe; the adjutant came in his armor; Old Montu came with his white hair; Young Nubu came with his chisel at his belt; A-Tu came with the river smell still on him. Lu Zhu spread the city’s defense map on the stone table, and with his charcoal, marked twenty-four dots at the city’s positions.

”These are the city’s twenty-four old wells.” He said. ”I looked at every one today. Nineteen can still be used. Together, they give barely half a day’s drinking water for the whole city. Washing, laundering, mixing mortar, watering the animals — all of it stops.”

”The aqueduct?” The adjutant asked. ”Can it be won back?”

”The gate is in the rebels’ hands.” Lu Zhu said. ”The west bank of the river is General Horen’s ground. But the gate is on the east bank, in the middle of the rebels’ camp. To buy back one gate with several hundred lives — is it worth it? A gate is a thing of iron and wood; it can be replaced. Lives cannot.”

”Then what do we do?” Old Montu said. ”We can’t watch the whole city die of thirst.”

”We dig wells.” Lu Zhu said.

The room was still for a moment. The adjutant spoke first: ”Dig wells? The city’s wells have been going dry for years. Is there still water under the ground?”

”There is.” Lu Zhu said. ”A well going dry does not mean the ground has no water — it means the well has grown old and shallow. Thebes sits on the river. The river’s water seeps into the ground all year round. There is a water line underground; it rises when the river rises, and falls when it falls. These dry years, the water line has sunk, and the old wells’ bottoms no longer reach it — but the water is still there, waiting. Find a low place, dig half a fathom deeper than the old wells, and we reach it.”

”You’re sure?” The adjutant asked.

”Not sure.” Lu Zhu said. ”We have to test first. I am sure of the principle; the ground will tell me the rest.”

The chief officiant had said nothing until now. Now he spoke: ”The master builder says dig, and I believe him. There is a well in the back courtyard of the old temple — every well in the city has gone shallow; that one hasn’t. The courtyard is the lowest ground, and it lies against an old river channel. You ask what the ground tells us — I can tell you what it told me, looking at that well every morning for a month: the water has not left; it has only gone deeper.”

The room’s eyes turned to the chief officiant.

”That is called,” the chief officiant said, ”water goes to the low places.”

Old Montu slapped his thigh: ”Right! Water goes to the low places! That low ground west of the city was a river channel in the old days. In my grandfather’s time, reeds were planted there — I remember the old men saying the ground drank up the floodwater in a night. Later the river changed its course, and the ground was filled in. Under that ground — there may well be the old riverbed!”

”Then we test the west first.” Lu Zhu said. His charcoal tapped the map once, at the low ground west of the city, and the tap was a decision.

”And one thing more.” A-Tu said. ”The boatmen of the West Bank all say this year’s river is clearer than usual. Clear water means the current runs slow at the bottom. Slow water seeps deep, and deep seepage fills the old channels. Under the low ground west of the city, there is likely a layer of old river water. It won’t run away.”

”The deeper the seep, the deeper we dig.” Lu Zhu said. ”Half a fathom down, and the water line will still be waiting under the ground for us. We only have to reach down to it.”

The next morning, the test pits were opened.

Lu Zhu brought twenty craftsmen to the low ground west of the city and marked three points. The three points ran in a slanting line, from the lowest place all the way to inside the west gate. At each point, a pit three feet square was dug first, half a man’s depth.

”Dig slowly.” Lu Zhu squatted at the edge of the first pit, watching the pit wall. ”Look at the color of every layer of earth. The earth keeps its own record — read it as you dig.”

The craftsmen dug down layer by layer. The first two layers were dry earth, pale yellow, crumbling at a touch, the color of old dust; the spades went through them with almost no resistance, and the diggers worked fast, the earth flying. At the third layer, the color deepened, darkening as it went; a handful of it left the palm damp, and the diggers slowed of their own accord, scraping instead of digging. Farther down, the earth stuck to the spade, and fine beads of water began to seep from the pit wall, gathering in the scratches of the spade and running down in thin bright lines.

”We’ve reached it.” Lu Zhu said.

Three pits: two shallow, one deep. The one at the lowest point reached wet earth at waist depth; the one near the gate was dug deeper than a man and the earth was still dry, crumbling, the color of chalk.

Lu Zhu jumped into the lowest pit, broke a lump of earth from the wall, and crumbled it in his palm. The earth was wet — it held together in a ball when he squeezed it, and did not fall apart when he opened his hand. That was the earth above the water line, swollen with moisture. He broke a lump from the dry pit too; it crumbled at a touch, and when he flung it, the dust filled half the pit with a fine haze that hung in the air.

”Do you see?” Lu Zhu climbed out of the pit and held out the wet earth for the watching craftsmen to see. ”The same ground — one pit wet, one pit dry. Where it’s wet, the water below is pressing up, and the moisture rides along the grain of the soil; where it’s dry, the water line lies deeper. A well is dug for that line. Not a hole in the ground — a meeting with the water.”

More and more of the city’s people gathered around. An old man with his own clay bottle pushed to the front to look, and when he had looked, he turned back to the crowd and said: ”The master builder is taking the pulse of the ground!” A low laugh ran through the crowd — and there was a new brightness in it, the brightness of a thing hoped for.

”Here.” Lu Zhu pointed at the lowest point, and drew a mark on a wooden stake with his charcoal. ”The water line is shallow here; easy digging. Twenty paces north, open another point.”

That day, the well sites were fixed: two in the low ground west of the city, one by the old basin south of the city — and the old well in the temple’s back courtyard. Four wells together could cover most of the shortage.

The news of the fixed sites spread through half the city before dark.

Around the low ground west of the city, a ring of the curious gathered. Some believed; some did not. They whispered together: the city’s wells had been going dry for years; to dig water out of this low ground, you’d have to move the river here. The words passed from mouth to mouth, and the doubt passed with them.

The words ”move the river here” reached Lu Zhu’s ears, and he said only one sentence: ”No need to move the river. The river is underground of its own accord — it has been waiting for us all along.”

The digging began the next day.

The well mouth was opened wide — a man could stand inside and turn around. The diggers were half stonemasons chosen by Kamon, half able-bodied men who had volunteered, and they came with their sleeves tied and their spades over their shoulders, the way men come to a field. A-Kun was brought in as well — the old man had dug wells for half his life, and half the city’s old wells were the work of his younger hands. He walked three circles around the site, squatted, scooped up a handful of earth, and held it to his nose for a long time, working it between his fingers. Then he said:

”Master Builder, this ground will take a well. When I was young, I always felt this low ground was wrong somehow — everywhere else dried out after rain, but this patch stayed green longer than any other. The grass knew where the water was, even if we didn’t.”

”Then why didn’t you dig it then, old man?” Young Nubu asked.

”Back then—” A-Kun grinned, showing the gaps in his teeth, ”back then the city’s wells gave more water than anyone could drink. Who would bother? Men only remember to dig wells when they’re thirsty. And by the time they’re thirsty, they’ve forgotten where the water lives.” He tapped the ground with his foot. ”The ground doesn’t forget. That’s the one thing in this city that doesn’t.”

The depth of the well was measured with a plumb line. A long rope, a stone tied at one end, a wooden board at the other, with a knot tied every foot. Dig a stretch, lower the rope, and the man at the mouth read the knots to know the depth. Lu Zhu wrote the depth in his notebook: one foot, three feet, five feet, eight feet... At every entry, he looked at the earth that came up, spreading it on the ground at the well mouth, feeling it, smelling it, the way he had read the pit walls.

The color of the earth was changing too. First yellow, then deep yellow, then threaded with fine sand that glittered in the light. A-Kun worked the sand between his fingers and said: ”We’re at the sand. Sand comes up along the water’s road — the river laid it down, year after year. The finer the sand, the nearer the water.”

”Fine sand, and below it, coarse.” Lu Zhu said. ”Coarse sand holds water like a sieve — the water fills the gaps between the grains and stays there. Dig to the coarse sand, and we’ve dug to water.”

On the first day, the well went down a man’s depth. The digging was easy — the earth was soft, just wet; the spades went in and came up dark. The dug earth came up in baskets, load after load, piling in a ring at the well mouth, and the ring grew around the dark hole like a rim. That evening, Lu Zhu would not let the work stop: torches were lit, and two shifts dug in turns, the men of the second shift coming with their meal sacks tied at their waists.

”In a siege,” he said, ”every night is a night. Every day water is late, the city endures one day more. The water will not wait for us; we meet it halfway.”

For the work at the bottom of the well, Lu Zhu set rules: every man who went down wore two ropes at his waist — one to haul up the earth, one to haul up the man. The second rope was the life rope, and the rule was that it was checked before a man went down, and checked again when he came up. At the well mouth, two men stood watch day and night: one on the ropes, one on the lamp. The lamp was a clay bowl lamp, hung three feet below the mouth, its light reaching the man at the bottom, showing his shadow on the wet wall. Whoever called out from below, the lamp was hauled up — and hauling up the lamp meant quitting for the day.

At night, the well mouth was the brightest place in the west of the city.

Six torches were planted, ringing the well mouth in a circle, the flames standing in the windless dark; the light of them reached out across the low ground and laid long shadows of the diggers on the earth. The night shift was mostly the able-bodied men who stood the wall by day; when they came off the wall, they drank half a bowl of barley porridge and came to the well to relieve the diggers. The change of shifts happened in the torchlight without ceremony — the man coming up handing his spade to the man going down. The mud water at the bottom of the well was icy — the cold of the deep earth — and a man’s calves went numb while he dug, the numbness climbing from the ankles up. When a man came up, he sat by the fire and stretched his feet toward the flames, the steam rising off his legs in white wisps, and the men waiting their turn warmed their own hands in silence.”Cold?” The man relieving him asked.

”Cold.” The man coming up said, drawing his feet back from the fire and flexing the toes. ”But when I think that every spade of mud down there is tomorrow’s water for the whole city — it isn’t cold anymore. The cold is in the legs; the warmth is in the knowing.”

Women carried barley porridge to the well mouth, and the dates in the porridge were twice as many as usual — the date pieces floating in the steam like dark coins. The woman who brought it said: ”These are a few dates I had put by. Eat hot, and you’ll dig better.”

”Save them for the children.” The digger said.

”The children are drinking water at home.” The woman said. ”The water you dug. They sleep easier for it.”

On the third day, the well was two men’s depth.

Water had begun to appear at the bottom. Not welling up — seeping, drop by drop, beading on the walls of the cut and gathering in the hollows. A man had to wait for the seep before he could dig another spade, and what came up was all thin mud, the color of clay.

”How much more?” Kamon asked, peering down from the rim.

”Half a fathom.” Lu Zhu said. ”The water seeping in is wet sand above the water line. We have to dig through the wet sand to the clean sand layer — that’s the true water. What seeps now is the herald; the layer below is the king.”

A-Kun nodded beside him: ”Right. Wet sand’s water is seeped water; the sand layer’s water is running water. Running water is what keeps a man alive. Seeped water keeps him damp.”

But that very night, something went wrong.

In the small hours, a stretch of the well wall collapsed. The earth gave way with a long, soft sound, like a sigh, and the mud slid down the wall in a mass. Two craftsmen were digging mud at the bottom; one of them was buried to the waist, his spade still in his hands. The men above hauled him out with the life rope and their hands, calling down to him the whole time — by the time he was up, his legs had gone weak, and he sat at the rim shaking, not from the cold. He was a stonemason who had worked the highest scaffolding without a flinch; he sat there gripping the rim until his knuckles were white, and then he stood up, and went back to work.

”Cave-in.” Old Montu squatted at the well mouth, his face dark, his fingers working the fallen earth. ”The earth of this low ground is heavy with sand. Dug too fast, and the walls can’t hold. The sand is honest about one thing: it does not stand.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He walked a circle around the well mouth, then squatted and looked at the fallen earth, crumbling it between his fingers. He looked at it for a long time, the way he looked at a failed wall. Then he raised his head: ”The walls have to be lined. From now on: dig a stretch, line a stretch. If we run out of pottery rings, use mud-brick. Mud-brick for the outer walls; pottery rings for below the water.”

”Where do the pottery rings come from?” The adjutant asked.

”Collect the city’s big storage jars.” Lu Zhu said. ”Water jars, pickling jars, grain jars — knock out the bottoms, and they’re rings. Record each by household; after the war, repay at full value. A jar that held water is already halfway to being a well.”

Before dawn, the jars came. More than twenty big jars in all, lined up in a row at the well mouth, their mouths gaping at the sky.

The notice asking for jars had been posted the night before; before dawn the next day, people were carrying jars to the site. Water jars, pickling jars, grain jars, large and small, set out across the ground; the children came to watch, and the jars stood in the gray light like a row of small houses. An old woman carried a pickling jar as tall as her waist and said: ”This jar came with my dowry; I’ve pickled vegetables in it half my life. Now the city wants it for a well — it will do more good in the well than in my kitchen. A jar is a small thing; a well is a city’s thing.”

The registrar tried to record her name for repayment. She waved a hand: ”What’s to record? When the well comes up, I’ll drink a mouthful from it every day — consider the jar my water money paid in advance.” The registrar wrote her name down anyway, in the column for repayment, and the old woman pretended not to see.

There were those who could not bear to part with theirs. A man carried his jar halfway, then turned back — and was driven out again by his wife’s scolding, her voice carrying down the lane: ”What’s a jar worth? The whole city is waiting for water!” The man, red-faced, brought the jar to the site, and as he left he stuffed a handful of straw into it — straw padding, he said, so it wouldn’t be damaged on the way down. He said it gruffly, and went home, and the craftsmen looked after him, and said nothing.

The craftsmen knocked the bottoms out of the jars, padded them with straw ropes, and lowered them one by one, stacking them up from the bottom of the well, the dark mouths fitting into the necks. As each jar was set, the gap outside it was packed solid with mud-brick, rammed with the same care as a wall. With the walls lined, a man could go down and dig without fear — the ring of jars held the earth back, and the earth knew it.

At noon on the fifth day, the well reached three fathoms.

Lu Zhu stood at the mouth, looking down. The man at the bottom had dug into a clean sand layer. The sand was yellowish-white, glittering where the water washed it, each grain catching the light that fell down the shaft. Water was seeping out of the sand layer now — much faster than before, running in tiny streams down the faces of the cut — and within a short while it had covered his feet.

”Stop!” Lu Zhu called down. ”Bring him up!” The man at the bottom raised a hand in answer, and the rope took his weight, and the digger came up out of the dark into the daylight, the water streaming from his legs.

When the man was hauled up, dripping, the water at the bottom had risen past his calves.

The first bucket was drawn by Lu Zhu’s own hand.

He took the rope himself, working it through his hands the way he had worked a hundred ropes on a hundred sites; the bucket went down into the dark, and the rope went slack, and then taut with the weight of water. The well rope went down; the wooden bucket sank into the water with a soft knock; when it came up, the water in it was clear and bright, catching the noon light, swaying as the bucket swung — and the light ran over the surface in a ripple, breaking and rejoining.

The people at the well mouth went silent all at once. The silence was complete, the kind of silence that holds a crowd before a shout.

And then, no one knew who shouted first: ”Water!”

That one shout was like a flame touching dry grass — the whole city caught. The crowd at the well mouth exploded: some clapping, some stamping, some throwing their straw hats into the air, the hats turning end over end in the light. An old man pushed to the front, took the bucket Lu Zhu had just drawn in both hands — his hands shook so badly that water splashed in all directions, and no one minded the splash. He bent down and drank a great mouthful. When he straightened up, tears were running down his face, cutting tracks through the dust.

”Sweet.” He said, his voice cracked. ”This water — it’s sweet...”

Beside him, a woman gave the water to the child in her arms. The child drank, smacked his lips, and said: ”Mother, the water tastes of sun.”

The woman’s tears came in a flood. She hugged the child, laughing and crying at once: ”Yes. Sun. The master builder’s well — its water tastes of sun.”

In the middle of the cheering, Lu Zhu squatted at the well-head and did not rise. He watched the buckets coming up, one after another, full of clear water, the light running over each surface. With his charcoal he wrote one line in his notebook:

”The first well has given water.”

The well had given water — but the work at the well was only beginning.

That night, Lu Zhu called Kamon and the carpenter gang to the well and said: ”The well is water; the well-head is the rule. A well without a well-head wastes the water; a well-head without rules sets men fighting. Three things; not one may be missing.”

The well-head was built the next day. The craftsmen laid a ring of stone slabs around the mouth, the outer edge raised, sloping outward — the slope measured with the eye, checked with a straight edge. Spilled water ran down the slope into a drainage ditch newly dug beside the well, and did not flow back in. A wooden lid was fitted over the mouth, with a hole cut in it, the rim polished smooth — the bucket went down through the hole; dust could not get in. The lid stayed shut by day; at night it was locked, and the keys were kept by the guard posted at the well.

”This lid,” Kamon said, running his hand over the wood, ”keeps out more than dust. It keeps out whoever might think of dropping something in, under cover of night.”

”You’ve reminded me of something.” Lu Zhu said. ”Inside the city and out, there are hundreds of eyes. From now on, the new wells and the old — all locked at night.”

The drawing device was built by A-Kun and the carpenters. A long wooden pole, its middle resting in a forked upright at the well’s edge; one end carried the bucket, the other was weighted with half a millstone. Press down on the near end, and the bucket went down; let go, and the weight raised the bucket up — the stone and the bucket trading places, up and down, like the two ends of a scale. The old man called it ”the sweep,” and said he had seen it in the countryside in his youth; it saved a man’s strength, and a saved strength was a saved life.

”Stone on one end, bucket on the other.” A-Kun demonstrated for the onlookers. ”Even a child can draw water with this. From now on, no bending down, no hard hauling — this sweep is the well’s arm. The well does the work; the man does the guiding.”

Someone in the watching crowd tried it on the spot. A half-grown boy worked the pole, and the bucket rose and fell, quick and steady, the rope running through his small hands. The boy laughed, and called back to his mother: ”Mother! I can draw water too!”

”Drawing water means keeping the rules.” Lu Zhu put in. He set a wooden signboard beside the well, with writing on it: the old and the children draw first; one bucket per person; when your bucket is full, go home. At the very bottom of the board were two painted strokes — the mark meaning ”drink first, wash after,” drawn for those who could not read, so that the rule belonged to everyone.

The distribution of the water was given to the chief officiant’s night patrol and the wardens. The city was divided into sectors, one well per sector; which sector drew at which hour was written plainly on the boards. For the first two days there was crowding and line-jumping; then the patrolmen stood their ground, pointed at the board, and the lines smoothed out — the boards became the law, and the law became habit.

Households with no one strong enough to draw got their own arrangement. The chief officiant’s patrol picked two young men for each sector, whose only duty was carrying water to the old, the alone, and the wounded. The young men went out at the hour the wells were fullest, and their route through the lanes was a fixed thing, so that the old knew when to expect them. The water buckets they carried bore the two painted strokes — the mark meaning ”no queue, no charge.” On the first day alone, they delivered more than forty buckets, and the buckets went from door to door like visiting neighbors.

In a lane south of the city, a blind old woman felt the rim of the bucket, and asked: ”Is this well water?” The young carrier said: ”Well water. Newly dug. Sweet.” The old woman drank a mouthful, and was still for a long moment. Then she said: ”I’ve been blind for ten years. This water on my tongue — I feel as if I can see again. See the whole city’s wells, alive.”

The well-side was not entirely peaceable. A man who jumped the line was pulled out by the warden — a wiry man of the night patrol who took the offender by the arm without a word and marched him to the back of the queue. The jumper was still arguing, his voice rising, his cap pushed back on his head. The chief officiant happened to be passing; he did not scold the man. He only brought him to the well and made him look at the queue — the old, the women, the children, each holding an empty bucket, waiting with their eyes fixed on the water, patient as stones.

”Look behind you.” The chief officiant said. ”Among these people — is there a mother of yours? A child of yours?”

The man’s face reddened, slowly, from the neck up. He lowered his head, walked to the very end of the line, and took his place. When his turn came, he drew only half a bucket. Someone asked why only half. He said: ”I’m giving back the share I took in advance.”

”The well is everyone’s; the water is everyone’s.” The chief officiant said to the queue at the well. ”A man who jumps the line is cutting the throat of his own people.”

The well by the old basin south of the city, and the second well west of the city, were dug by the first one’s method.

With the first well’s experience behind them, these two went much faster. Dig a stretch, line a stretch; when the pottery jars ran out, they used scrap brick from the city and cobbles from the river flats. A-Kun said a well wall need not be pretty — it must hold. Dry-laid cobbles with coarse sand packed in the joints; the water seeps in through the gaps, and comes through cleaner than through pottery rings. ”The wall is a gate for the water,” he said. ”The gate must open to water and shut to earth.”

The well by the old basin south of the city went the worst.

A foot down, it struck something — the old basin’s floor was a layer of broken brick and tile mixed with years of silt, packed as hard as if it had been built, the fragments fused by time and pressure. The chisels rang ”bong, bong,” and sparks flew, small and sharp in the dark of the shaft.

”This isn’t digging a well,” a craftsman planted his chisel in the ground. ”This is demolishing a house.”

”Demolish.” Lu Zhu said. ”The old basin held water at its bottom — that means there’s something good under this layer of broken brick. The water chose this spot once; it will choose it again. Take it apart, block by block. Break through, and there’s the water.”

The craftsmen took turns with the chisels, two at a time, their shoulders working in the narrow shaft, the chips of old brick coming up in the baskets with the silt. It took two days to break through the layer of brick — and when the last block came away, the earth under it was black, rich mud, the color of old river bottom, the mud of a channel that had held water for a hundred years. Under the mud, fine sand. Another day and a half of digging, and the water was seeping through, beading on the sand. On the day the water came, an old craftsman carried the thickest of the old bricks up out of the well, and set it on the rim, and said: ”Buried for decades — and it has done its part for this well after all.”

On the sixth day, the well south of the city gave water. On the eighth day, the second well west of the city gave water.

The old well in the temple’s back courtyard was opened by the chief officiant himself. The well stood on low ground with a shallow water line, and it had never run dry in the dry years. The chief officiant had the courtyard gate left open all day, so that the neighbors could come and draw water at any hour — the gate stood wide from first light to dark, and the soldiers at the temple gate did not hinder them.

”This well has been shut up in the temple for all these years,” the chief officiant said. ”Today it opens, and the whole city drinks.”

Under the old date tree in the back courtyard, the water-drawers came and went, the buckets knocking softly at the rim, the well-rope running through callused hands. The courtyard that had been silent for weeks filled with the sounds of ordinary life — the creak of the sweep, the slap of water, the low talk of neighbors. An old man, after drawing his water, bowed to the chief officiant. The chief officiant did not return the bow; he only waved a hand: ”The water belongs to the earth; the sun belongs to everyone. I am only the gatekeeper.”

The courtyard well’s well-head was rebuilt by the craftsmen too. The old head had cracked, and spilled water seeped down the cracks — muddy, and wasteful, the water running away into the earth. Young Nubu led the work: the well-head raised on a bed of gravel, drainage ditches dug around it, a wooden lid fitted over the mouth. When the work was done, he said to the chief officiant: ”The well is the temple’s elder; the well-head is its new robe. An elder in a new robe draws water with more spirit.”

The chief officiant laughed. He rarely laughed — and when he did, even the date leaves seemed to rustle with it.

”That well has been in the temple all these years,” he said, ”and this is the first time a craftsman has taken its measure. It deserves the honor.”

Three new wells, one old well, and the nineteen that still worked — the city’s water steadied. The panic at the water gate dissolved; the queues shortened; the lines at the well-heads moved with the quiet rhythm of ordinary days.

But the water still had to travel.

The wells south of the city were far from the lanes of the north. Water carriers walked ten or more round trips a day, and their shoulders wore bloody stripes that showed through their tunics. Lu Zhu had A-Kun and his men piece together the old pottery pipes found in the city’s abandoned houses and the old temple quarter — section by section, from the well-head south of the city to an old cistern in the north, the sections fitting together like a spine. The pipes were laid in shallow trenches: packed firm on the upslope, dug out below — water at height runs naturally to the low places, and the pipes were only the road it took.

”This is an old thing.” A-Kun ran his hand over the pipe, tracing the ribbed clay. ”When I was young, the temple used these to bring water. Broken for decades — and now, in the days of the siege, they’re in use again. The old things of this city are waking up one by one.”

On the day the pipes ran, the people of the north queued at the cistern to draw water, the jars knocking together in the line. An old man filled a jar, held it up, and looked at it against the light: ”South-of-the-city water, walking to the north of its own accord. This city is still connected.”

”The city is connected.” Lu Zhu said. ”And the hearts are connected. What is open does not hurt; what hurts is blocked. This war cannot break a city that stays connected.”

The water had steadied — but washing was still tight.

The well water was for drinking, and for drinking only. Laundering, mixing mortar, watering the animals — all of it stayed stopped. The mortar on the wall was mixed from stale reused water, the color of weak tea; if a child was caught playing with water, an adult hand came down at once: ”That water is for people to drink, not for you to splash!” The scolding rang through the lanes all day, and the children learned the lesson quickly.

The work on the wall changed its methods because of the water, too.

The stale water for mixing mortar, the damp earth for ramming — everything yielded to the water that people must drink. Kamon moved the mixing work to the night, when the air was cool and the moisture did not evaporate, so that one bucket of water did the work of two; the mixing gangs worked by torchlight, and the mortar came out of the night with a smooth, even temper. He also built a shade awning over the material yard — poles and reed matting, angled against the sun — so the lime-soaked earth was not baked, and the water that would have been needed to wet it down was saved.

”The wall cannot stop; the water cannot be grabbed.” Kamon said to his foremen. ”Both the men and the wall — be sparing. Whoever pours one bucket of water where two would do, I take it out of his meal.”

That was what he said. But on the third day, a stretch of newly rammed wall on the north side cracked. The crack ran up the face like a dark vein, narrow at the bottom and widening at the top; a man could press the edge of his hand into it, and the earth crumbled at the touch. Kamon squatted before it for a long time, his fingers tracing the crack from end to end, and sent for Lu Zhu.

”Too little water, too hurried ramming — the earth hasn’t drunk its fill.” Kamon said. ”This stretch: the face looks done, but the inside is loose. The water went to the surface; the heart stayed dry.”

”Tear it down and re-ram?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Tear it down.” Kamon said. ”Not enough water — I’ll save it from my own share. If the wall is hollow, the water we saved has all been fed to the cracks. A hollow wall is a debt; a solid wall is a balance.”

That day, the stretch was torn down, the rammers’ spades biting into the loose heart of it. Kamon poured his own day’s gourd of water into the ramming earth, the water darkening the soil where it fell. The craftsmen saw it, and no one spoke. But from that day on, no one at the material yard ever dipped out an extra gourd.

Lu Zhu had the four characters ”drink first, wash after” written on the notice boards at the four gates — the brush strokes large and even, so that a man could read them from across the street, and the boards themselves washed and re-posted so that the writing stayed fresh. And by the new well south of the city, he had a small trough built — a run of stone, tilted and smooth — so that the water splashed while drawing ran down the trough into an old stone mortar beside it, gathering there. Whoever needed water for laundering drew it from that, dipping carefully, taking only what the trough had caught.

”This city,” A-Bu said, passing with his water yoke and looking at the little trough, ”has even found a place for spilled water.”

”A basin of water is a life.” Lu Zhu said. ”In the days of the siege, water is worth more than gold.”

A-Bu shifted the yoke to his other shoulder, and suddenly said: ”Master Builder, do you know — on the day the water came out, everyone shouted. I didn’t.”

Lu Zhu looked at him.

”I’ve sold water for thirty years.” A-Bu said. ”I know where this water comes from, and I know how little it can spare. One well gives a hundred-odd buckets a day. How many buckets does the whole city drink in a day? I’ve counted — I’ve carried the number on my shoulder all my life. Old wells plus new — for drinking, it’s enough; for using, it’s far short. This one well can meet the emergency; it cannot meet the long road.”

He paused, and settled his yoke, and went on: ”But I still want to thank you. This water did not come easily — I watched the digging, I saw the cave-in, I know what the well cost. From now on, my water stays at the old price: not one coin more. If the whole city drinks sparingly, this water will last a little longer — I will carry it the way I have always carried it.”

He finished, and walked away with his yoke. The sunset drew his shadow and the shadow of his buckets out long behind him, and the two shadows moved together down the lane, and the lane was quiet behind him.

Lu Zhu stood by the well and ran A-Bu’s words through his mind. After a long while, he took out his charcoal and wrote four characters in the margin of the defense map:

”Save water as you save grain.”

That night, Lu Zhu went back to the well west of the city.

The well-head was empty. The moon lit the well mouth, and the water inside shone like a polished silver plate, the light lying on the surface without breaking. The wooden lid stood open, and the bucket hung at the end of the sweep, motionless. He sat on the rim of the well, listening to the water seep, seep — patiently, as if someone underground were breathing softly, and the breathing was the city’s own.

He remembered the first well he had ever dug, with his own crews, on the West Bank in the old years. When that well came up, a child had crouched at the mouth and shouted: ”There’s a moon in there!” In those days, the only thought in his head had been to save enough grain and money to find the road home — the moon in the well had been a curiosity, a thing to pass.

”Not anymore.” He said, low. ”What I want now is for the moon in this well to keep shining on the people of this city.”

In the small hours, A-Tu’s boat came back.

He brought a message from Horenheb. The message was very short: ”Can the city’s water hold?”

”Answer him.” Lu Zhu said. ”The well water is enough to drink, and the hearts are steady. Tell him to watch the west bank — the ash on the grain road is not yet cold, and the rebels will not burn it only once. What happens inside the city, the city carries itself.”

A-Tu acknowledged. As he was leaving, he turned back and said: ”Master Builder — the brothers outside hear the city has dug out water, and they say their own thirst is gone. General Horen says: every well the city digs is a measure of strength for the men outside.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He watched A-Tu’s boat vanish back into the night, the oars whispering, and suddenly felt that this besieged city had never truly been alone. The ditch outside, the wells inside — between them lay only a river, and a boatful of lamps.

And in the rebels’ camp outside the city, someone else was watching the water.

Panhesy reported the scouts’ news to Nekhem, exactly as it had come: ”The city has dug out wells. Four of them, in the low ground west of the city. The water is clear, and not a little.”

Nekhem was wiping his hands with a cloth. He wiped slowly, finger by finger, working the cloth into the creases, and only when he was done did he say: ”We cut the aqueduct; they dig wells. The people of this city have hard lives. Hard lives breed hard people.”

”Shall we—” ℴ

”No hurry.” Nekhem said. ”The well water is only enough to drink. With drinking water, they can live. But count it out for yourself — the whole city’s washing stopped, the whole city’s masonry stopped, a city of people who cannot wash their clothes for ten days or half a month. What happens?”

Panhesy said nothing.

”People grow dirty; they sicken; they stink.” Nekhem said. ”A dirty heart scatters easier than a thirsty one. We do not need to move a finger — we only wait and watch.” He paused, and added: ”Still, the water coming out of those wells is too clean for my comfort. Have someone add something to the aqueduct.”

”The aqueduct is already cut.”

”Cut, then add it to the water upstream of the cut.” Nekhem said. ”There is always water that has not dried, and always people who still hope for the aqueduct. Add it, and cut off that hope. A hope that has no road is worse than no hope at all.”

Before Panhesy withdrew, he stood a moment at the tent’s mouth. He remembered half a month ago, pulling back from the river bend, when the High Priest had said: the new capital is off; we go back for Thebes. Then, the whole camp had been wound tight — the city was lost; they would take it back, and the taking would be quick. Now the siege had gone on for more than half a month; the city had not fallen, and the people inside had dug out water. The war was beginning to feel less like a campaign and more like endurance.

”High Priest,” he said, ”some of the men in the siege lines are losing heart. Digging ditches, standing sentry, eating wind and sand, day after day, with no end in sight.”

Nekhem had finished wiping his hands. He folded the cloth square, corner to corner, and set it at the corner of the desk. His voice was as it always was — level, without a trace of heat:

”No heart? Then find them something to put heart into. They see the fires of the south line every day; they count the city’s smoke every day. Tell them — the city’s water was bought with dead sheep. When the people inside drink bad water and fall sick, they will know that standing here, wherever they stand, was worth it. A siege is won by the men who can wait the longest; give them a reason to wait.”

Panhesy acknowledged, and withdrew. At the tent’s mouth he stopped and looked back once: the High Priest had taken up the old scripture again, and was turning its pages by the lamp, his fingertip moving down each column — the same patience that had waited out priests and pharaohs, waiting now on the slow decay of a besieged city.

That night, a company of rebels slipped up to the aqueduct upstream of the city. They carried two rotten dead sheep, and threw them into the channel. The dead sheep drifted in the water, swollen, their legs stiff, not moving, carried by the current toward the city.

Downstream of the aqueduct, behind the wall, the stone basin at the water gate south of the city held only a thin skin of water. On the surface of that thin water floated a layer of light, oily, gleaming — flickering in the moonlight, spreading and closing like something alive.

And at that same hour, in the back courtyard of the official granary, Lu Zhu was staring at the city’s defense map.

The water problem, he had pressed down. But another circle on the map was floating up again — the granaries. The city’s grain: he had not audited it carefully in all these days. The rebels had held the city for half a month; whether they had carried anything out, or burned anything, he did not know. Without water, a man can go thirsty for days; if the grain were empty, that would be the sky falling. The well had eased the throat; the granary was the belly, and the belly was a longer road.

He picked up his brush and drew a heavy circle around the position of the granaries.

”Tomorrow,” he said, low, ”we audit the grain.”

Beyond the wall, in the night, a rebel war-horn sounded once, far away. Very faint — as if it had floated up from under the water, and sunk again.
