Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 53: Chapter 2: Master and Apprentice Arrive The Medical Hall Takes Shape on Paper

The sun had not yet fully risen. Over the adobe-brick drying yard, the sky had just released its first wash of pale gray light — a color so faint it seemed to exist only at the edge of the eye, gone the moment you turned to look at it directly. The desert night’s chill was still sinking into the brick stacks, condensation beading on the kiln-fired surfaces and evaporating almost as soon as it formed, leaving behind tiny dark speckles on the clay like the last traces of a dream the dreamer no longer remembers.

Lu Zhu had been at the drafting board a long time already. The board was a slab of Nile acacia — the same board he had pulled from the scrap pile late the night before, its surface planed flat but unfinished, one edge still carrying the bark’s ragged margin, a half-peeled strip of dried inner skin curling loose. His charcoal moved across the wood, drawing one arrow — then stopped, scratched it out, drew another — then roughened the charcoal’s tip against the board’s grain, and when he lifted his fingers, a fine drift of wood dust hung suspended in the morning air, catching the first true light.

Beside him, an oil lamp had burned its wick to a blackened stub. The flame was still alive, but barely — a thin, wavering tongue that flattened to near-invisible with every draft from the door gap. The last time he had refilled the lamp, he had trimmed the wick back by half a finger-width — it was burning too fast, he needed to stretch the oil — and the flame had been drawing on residue for the last hour, sucking the final dregs from the clay reservoir. The lamp on his right was also burning low; he had not had time to refill either of them.

On the board before him: the medical hall’s preliminary floor plan.

He had drawn a gate on the southern wall — the main intake, the sick entering from this side, one entry route, one pathway through. Behind the intake hall, a treatment corridor, flanked left and right by wards. Behind the treatment corridor: quarantine zone, isolation zone, intensive care. Behind those, a pharmacy storehouse at the center, the most protected position in the entire layout. The storehouse wall was double-thick — two brick-widths — and against its northern face, no windows at all, to keep the interior cool and the temperature stable. Beside the storehouse, a small medicine-processing workshop, its doorway separated from the storehouse by a full wall, so that the dust of grinding and pounding and slicing would not drift into the herbs stored next door.

Between every two zones, he had drawn arrows. Each arrow ran in one direction only. From clean to contaminated. From the high sanitized zone to the wet-processing zone to the patient-flow zone to the discharge zone. None of the arrows ever turned back. On the drawing — this drawing spread across the acacia board under the dying lamp — the flow logic was so clean it looked like the work of a man who had spent years designing granaries: grain in from one side, out from the other, no stored grain ever crossing back into the intake stream. A granary’s rules, applied to a building where the thing being stored was not grain but human lives. The arrows were the same. The logic that ruled them — one direction, no return — was the same. The difference was that in a granary, a spoiled sack meant a loss on the tally. In a medical hall, a crossed flow line meant someone died.

He raised his head. It was light enough now to read. The drawings on the board, in the morning air, had grown clearer — the charcoal lines standing out against the acacia grain like dark veins, his first-round scratches still visible as faint branching marks beneath the final strokes. In the latter half of the night, he had moved from the drafting board to the ground, crouching with his knees pulled up to his chin, looking down at the drawing from a patient’s eye-height, tracing the flow with his finger. His thumb, without conscious thought, had kept rubbing charcoal dust from his cuff — a habit from the night before, when he had started drawing and not stopped. His nail-beds were still black.

Imset entered without a sound.

When he walked into the adobe-brick shelter, his pace was unhurried, but every step landed solid and true. His wooden staff left neat, shallow, round impressions in the packed-earth floor — marks so evenly spaced they could have been set by a measuring stick. He had not slept. The bench against the medical stall’s inner wall — the one where he had leaned through the night, the reed-mat partition vibrating against his shoulder from the wind — had kept him upright between patients, one after another, until his spine had learned the exact shape of the reed bundles pressing into it. He had walked all the way from the stall to this shelter, and though his body wore the fatigue — the slight inward curve of his shoulders, the fine sand-paper rasp in his breath — his back was still straight, his chin still lifted. He came to a stop before Lu Zhu’s drafting board and looked down at the acacia slab.

Lu Zhu did not speak. He lifted the board from the ground with both hands and held it out, his charcoal-stained fingers framing the edges. In the morning light, the charcoal lines gave off a faint, muted shimmer — the graphite catching the dawn at an angle. He had gone over them with his finger the night before, smearing the edges to soften them, the way a scribe smooths the texture of a character that has been carved too deep.

Imset took the board and looked at it for a very long time.

He read the drawing the way a physician reads a patient’s face — not scanning, not skimming, but receiving it whole and then working through the parts. This was a man who had spent a lifetime walking night roads without a lamp, learning to recognize a path by the texture of the ground beneath his feet; now, on this board, for the first time, someone had drawn him a map. His fingers traced the lines — from intake to treatment, from treatment to pharmacy — and at each junction he paused, as if testing whether those arrows would hold real weight, would actually bear a patient walking from one zone to the next.

”The pharmacy — its position. Why here?” His finger stopped at the center of the drawing, at the storehouse’s designated ground.

”Center,” Lu Zhu said. He picked up the charcoal and drew a circle around the pharmacy’s perimeter, then added a ring of narrow lines around the circle — a double boundary. ”The pharmacy is buried in the core. The treatment wards wrap around it. Between wards and pharmacy — a ventilation gap, no wider than two fingers. The storehouse wall is two brick-widths thick, a brick and a half. Ventilation slots on the north and south faces — north slots draw cool air in, south slots exhaust the damp. Temperature won’t fluctuate. Humidity won’t collect. When you store dried herbs in there, they won’t spoil.”

He paused. He looked up at Imset. ”The countertop — every herb’s position by type. The dried herbs that are running short — you said where they sit on the shelves now is wherever they fit. The dried-herb bundles are mixed in with the root-stocks, the leaf-cuttings are stacked next to the seed-pods. Every herb has a fixed shelf life. If you know which one spoils when, you know where it goes.”

Shafi had been standing to the side the entire time. She had not interrupted. But her lips had been moving — a tight, silent motion, the way a person’s lips move when they are reciting something they have already memorized. From dried herb position one all the way to the final shelf slot. Dried pomegranate rind, north side, near the ventilation slot. Powdered myrtle leaf, south-facing shelf, on a sand bed. The underground storage pit — the deepest layer, the spot farthest from daylight and closest to stable cool — was marked with an angled ventilation shaft on the plan. These positions she had already learned by heart. These positions — every single one — she had measured with her own hands, stretching her fingers across the medicine-chest shelves in the dark, matching each packet’s width to the space between her thumb and forefinger. And when she looked up again, she saw that on the board, every one of those positions was already drawn in — the shelf dividers, the pit mouth, the sloped ventilation duct — and the dimensions beside them matched her own measurements to the thickness of a fingernail. She had not slept. No one had spoken to her about these positions. But her fingers, running across the shelves in the dark, had already told her where each herb belonged. And now, on this board, the lines confirmed it.

She stood a little farther back from the board — the medicine chest still strapped to her, the leather binding pulled tight, the way her master had said: ”Don’t unload the medicine chest.” She had not unloaded it. Through the night, the chest had pressed against her back; the leather strap had worn a red groove into her shoulder, the same depth and width as the strap itself, like a brand applied not with heat but with time. She had not loosened it.

”Master,” she asked, ”what do I still need to check?” She was standing now at the edge of the drawing, looking at it from an angle no one else had taken. Last night, in the medical stall, the apprentice who had been running between the medicine rack and the treatment mats — the one whose eyes were still threaded with red from the night’s work — had asked the same question. And now, still standing in front of the wooden board, her gaze would not leave the pharmacy notations. ”I need to check every herb’s current inventory — whether the underground storage is too damp, whether it needs a dehumidifying sand bed.” Mery had come in from the adobe-brick drying yard at some point and she had not noticed. He was holding a roll of architectural drawings — a standard foundation floor-plan sheet that had not yet been unfurled. His hair was messy; he had just woken from the laborers’ shelter. He had not slept on the drying yard’s bare ground — he had slept on the foundation-level survey stakes, the wooden pegs whose positions he had used to calibrate the medicine-storehouse’s interior dimensions and the herb cabinet’s detailed spacing. ”Those are the interior-fit standards for the pharmacy.”

Mery stepped up to the board and ran his crooked index finger along the pharmacy cabinet’s interior. His finger did not move. He let the tip rest where the charcoal smudge was thickest. ”For the medicines that need light — the ones that need checking against the light — you can see through to the courtyard. The ones that can’t take light — those you bury deep. The ones that need to breathe — those go in the middle.” He had drawn this part of the drawing earlier than everything else — he had designed the medicine cabinets in his head before he had even finished the foundation plan. Because he had not slept, he had spent the night re-running every interior dimension one more time, recalculating every storage-compartment clearance against the standard. Whether his calculations were right or not, he did not know. He had never designed a medicine cabinet before. But he had watched Shafi handle those dried herbs in the medical stall — the roots stacked aside, the leaves beside, the seeds in the smallest compartment — and every herb had its own fixed span of usefulness. And those spans — months, seasons, years — were the real dimensions of the cabinet.

”I need to go find Shafi — the boy washing medicine bundles at the ferry crossing this morning. I’ll ask him how thick those twine ties are.” Mery drew a small circle on the drawing, then drew a smaller circle beside it. Then he drew an elongated rectangle next to the smaller circle. ”The seed sacks — about this thick. The leaf-and-stem bundles — this wide, about half. The dried-fruit stacks — one or two narrower than the leaf bundles.” He wrote a number beside them in charcoal. These numbers were not measured with a ruler. They were measured by eye. The measuring eye of a boy who could look at a medicine bundle from across the yard and tell you whether it exceeded the width of his thumb — a width he knew was just under the width of two fingers pressed together. When he spoke, his voice was the same as when he announced the time of working shifts — dawn or noon — a natural fact, the kind of thing anyone could verify if they just stood still and looked.

”The wall-cavity ventilation slots — open to the foundation’s air gap, drawing the wind from below. The slots face south — steady wind, steady temperature. Dried herbs won’t sunburn. If they sit in the sun too long, they’ll bleach. Bleached herbs mold. There’s only a hair’s breadth between bleaching and mold, about the width of half a fingernail pressed into the wall.” He paused. He stood up and brushed the dust from his clothes. Then he called back to Kamon — ”What are you going to call the hall? The medical hall? The healing hall? What name?”

”The Healing Hall.” Kamon’s voice carried from behind the brick stacks, where he was standing among the foundation-line markers, running the layout stakes on the ground. ”Mery named it. It just came out.” He had said it without thinking — the word had come out of his mouth before he could decide whether it was the right one. And after he said it, he was silent for a moment. A man who had spent half his life building walls, repairing temples, raising granaries — he had never once built a wall with the word ”healing” in its purpose. This word — this name — he had said it, and now it was in the air, and he was still standing there, feeling it land, the way a stone dropped into a deep well lands: you hear it hit bottom, and the sound is something you did not expect.

In the shelter, everyone paused for a moment. Then someone laughed — a short laugh, a stonemason’s laugh, the kind that comes out rough and surprised at itself. Kamon laughed. And then everyone else laughed with him. The sound of laughter in the adobe-brick shelter dispersed outward, thin and bright, scattering across the morning dew that still clung to the bricks. The laborers standing on the stone pile and the mortar-mixing foreman, the men balancing on the timber scaffold — every one of them looked up. Because here was a healing hall. A hall built not to honor a god but to hold a medicine cabinet and keep dried herbs from molding. The man who built it was a man who had spent his life believing that walls were for warehousing grain. And now — they laughed — he was founding a healing hall. He had never laid out a foundation line for something like this, and when the laughter faded, his feet were already moving. He crossed the adobe-brick drying yard over the newly laid stone-paved road, his pace unhurried, but every step planted with precision, and the short ruler slipped from his leather case as he walked, the brass collar catching the dawn at each step, flashing a small pulse of light.

He stood before the acacia board and looked at the plank that Lu Zhu had covered in arrows and boxes and flow lines. He looked at it for just as long as needed — not too long, not too short, the space of a decision. Then he spoke. ”This site — it’s overlapping the official grain-reserve land allocation. The grain reserve is due north, and the land directly south of it is needed for infrastructure. Take that land for a medical hall — what happens to the grain that was supposed to go there?”

As he said it, the short ruler came out of the leather case, and he turned it one full rotation in his hand. The brass collar pressed a shallow groove into the edge of the acacia board. That groove was pressed very light — no one saw it, and after pressing it, Kamon lifted a finger, touched that impression, and confirmed that the position he had pressed was precisely the position that fell on the boundary line of the official grain reserve’s land allocation.

”It won’t crowd the grain.” Kamon slid the short ruler back into his leather case, then pulled it out again. ”I’ll tell you what will crowd it. What matters, right now, is the actual thing that needs to happen. The grain reserve has its own submission records — its due dates, its land-use survey maps, its transport-road dedications. You set the healing hall there.” His eyes moved from Lu Zhu’s face to the drawn plan, and from the drawn plan to the stretch of open ground behind the stone-pile on the construction road. This man had been running construction logistics since before the new capital was even a survey sketch. ”If you want to build a healing hall, first tell me — give me — the full foundation survey.”

Lu Zhu did not answer right away. He turned the charcoal in his hand and drew a line around the site’s boundary — then another, connecting the interior flow road to the exterior service road. Then, along the south side of the ward building, he drew several small circles. Every circle marked a dynamic survey point — testing for settlement, checking the compaction. He drew the reserve land, notched to the west of the original site. The hall only took one-third of the reserve parcel. He added a narrow plot on the south side. ”This plot — it stays open. North side, the grain road; south side, the stone-paved construction road. The hall connects to both. The hall’s construction road meets the stone-paved road, laid out so the early-phase construction doesn’t block each other. The grain reserve keeps its standards — foundation height, wall thickness, moisture-barrier grade — all unchanged from the original specs. The hall can take deliveries, and the grain reserve can take deliveries. Nothing collides.”

When he finished speaking, he set the charcoal on the edge of the board and looked up at Kamon.

Kamon did not answer right away. His silence was the silence of a man who had been signing off on requisition forms for thirty years — a silence measured not in breaths but in inventory lines. He was still looking at the arrows on the plan. The intake-ward arrow pointed toward the treatment corridor; the treatment corridor arrow pointed toward the discharge exit; the pharmacy arrow pointed in from the storehouse. And the treatment corridor and the pharmacy access — the flow lines for fetching medicine and the flow lines for moving patients — never crossed. The flow logic — he did not know where it had come from, but he knew this: he had never seen it in any official grain-reserve construction manual. This was something one man had laid out, alone, on a board, in the hours between when the last patient stopped coughing and the first bricklayer picked up his trowel.

He drew the short ruler out again and traced it once across an empty space on the plan. ”Back when I reviewed the grain-reserve drawings, I told you — ’the line.’ The one you drew. The flow line. This. You drew it then. You’re drawing it now.”

Lu Zhu did not say yes. He simply took the edge of that arrow pointing northeast — the one that marked the access route — and widened it by half a finger-width. He widened the arrow, then widened another line on the opposite side — the matching line. What remained unspoken was the kind of thing a man could undo his own work to fix. Somewhere on this board there was always one line you could widen. And once you widened it, you set the charcoal down, and when you stood, your knee gave a crack — you had been crouching too long.

Kamon took one look at that widened section, then drew a blank official tally-stick from his leather case and a bronze-nibbed stylus. He dipped the nib in ink and wrote on the tally: the project number, the construction items, the supervising personnel. He wrote fast. When he reached the last character, his stylus paused — a fraction of a breath. Then he raised his head and looked at Shafi.

”The medicine inventory list — where is it?”

Shafi startled. She had not expected him to ask her. But it did not take long. She unstrapped the medicine chest’s leather binding and pulled out a sheet of leather from the inner layer — a tally-sheet she had started at the ferry crossing, while waiting for the boat. Its edges were cut slightly crooked, but the writing was meticulous. Every line listed: medicine name, daily dosage, storage requirements, current stock, projected shortfall. She held the leather sheet out with both hands.

Kamon took it and looked it over. He read closely — every line, every row — and when his eyes stopped at one item, his brow furrowed briefly, though he did not raise his head. He turned the leather sheet over. On the back was one more line, the handwriting a shade lighter than the front: ”Supply gap — pomegranate rind entirely exhausted. Inquire about substitute. In case of emergency — gather locally by riverbank.”

He read it through, then returned the leather sheet to Shafi. ”Keep these items documented,” he said. Then he turned the official tally-stick over and copied out one line on its reverse. ”Medicine inventory list — verified. Shortfalls to be addressed per priority.” He handed the tally to Lu Zhu. ”These inventory items — I’m submitting them in today’s batch. The requisition paperwork — is it complete?”

”Complete,” Lu Zhu said. ”The letter to the capital has been drafted. The standard — there is a standard. It needs a practitioner to set it. For later review, the original record goes on file.”

Kamon set the signed tally-stick on the stone drafting slab, pressing it flat with the bronze stylus laid horizontally across it. The lower-left corner of the tally bore his personal seal — the seal’s impression sunk deep into the paper, the papyrus fibers crushed into a fine crosshatch visible only at close range. And on that paper, the boundaries of ”grain” and ”medical hall” now sat side by side in official ink: one accord, inked and filed. What you used to measure grain — by volume, by weight, by standard — could also be used to measure medicine. And once you measured it, once you signed it, the man who had been weighing the one was now weighing the other.

After stamping the seal, he looked up and scanned the shelter once. ”The foundation lines — are they laid?”

”Lime and charcoal,” Kamon said, pointing toward the colored lines on the open ground. ”They need a foundation trench dug before the walls go up. The lime lines, by the day after tomorrow — if the lime isn’t on the ground, the surveyors can’t read them.”

Kamon nodded. He slipped the short ruler back into its leather case. He turned and took a few steps, then stopped. He did not look back — only stopped there, as if something he had meant to say was still hanging at the back of his throat. After three full breaths, he continued walking. His pace was the same as when he had come in — quick, solid, the brass collar of the short ruler swinging at his hip, flashing at each stride: once, twice, once, twice.

The medical hall’s foundation lines were driven that same morning by Kamon and by Kamon’s own hand.

The site had been chosen on the north bank, higher than the riverbank flats by a full span — high enough that flood season would not swamp it. The ground ran slightly elevated along the north-south axis; the road to the east was already laid. When Kamon knelt to examine the ground, he pressed both palms flat against the earth and held them there a moment, then stood and said, ”The subsoil here is drier. The groundwater table — deeper than the riverbank side by at least a full foot.” Lu Zhu did not question him. He crouched at the same spot Kamon had just left, scooped up a palmful of soil, worked it between his fingers until it crumbled, and then sniffed it — once — and nodded.

Kamon took the survey stakes from the quarry gang’s foreman — the same foreman who, to every single mason on the crew, repeated the exact same words: ”Master Lu’s standard — pharmacy storehouse foundation raised no less than one finger-width above the surrounding grade. Wall base — two brick-widths, a brick and a half thick. Not one finger less.” After he said this, he added another sentence: ”Whoever builds the east wall, whoever builds the west wall — mark the interior of your bricks with your own mark. Later, when the walls are checked, we’ll know who built them. And we’ll know who to ask.” He had been on construction sites his whole life. He knew that a wall was only as honest as the man who laid it.

The laborers working the foundation trench had — some of them — already rubbed their standards down to the thickness of their own fingertips. A young apprentice, splitting stone, suddenly said, ”When the healing hall is built, I’m going to come work as a medicine-boy.” He was hefting a stone: ”I’ll grind these stones into powder first.” The older mason beside him glanced at the stone bucket. In that glance there was no mockery, but no agreement either. He had already finished grading all the stone that belonged at the bottom of the pharmacy’s wall — every piece set to the same slope, no piece looser than the next, the wall-base bedding and the pharmacy’s foundation trough laid to the same level line. A single string, snapped across the span. Before he tipped the stone bucket’s contents into the trench, he said one thing to that apprentice: ”Level this bucket of stone first. If the medicine-boy’s level isn’t true, his powder won’t come out even.”

While the men worked the trench, Shafi had been walking back and forth between the medical stall and the medicine chest at the pharmacy site. Every time she made the trip, her lips moved — she was counting. Old He had given her all his remaining dried herbs; there was nothing left to count. But still she stopped at the chest, beside the bare shelves, and her lips kept moving. Each number she recited, she had first learned by watching Lu Zhu’s finger track down the cedar board, one line at a time, measuring the space of a medicine cabinet with the precision of a foundation survey. Something she had learned by watching — without being taught.

And then, mid-afternoon, she stopped. She set a piece of limestone fragment down on the ground and drew on it with her finger — a quick sketch of the leaf-bundle cabinet, the seed compartment, the pomegranate-rind slot. Then she looked down at the lines on the ground, raised her head toward the pharmacy’s north wall — that wall, still roofless in the afternoon sun — and then looked back down. She wiped the mud from her hand onto her skirt and turned back toward the construction site. The afternoon light caught her back as she walked — a girl who no longer believed she was just a medicine apprentice.

She stood inside the still-roofless pharmacy and pulled out her own leather tally-sheet. She spread it flat across the boundary-leather that marked the pharmacy’s external wall line — a sheet covered in shelf notations and cabinet-dimensional annotations. Some entries read ”Underground Storage — Medicinal Herbs.” Others: ”Cool-Storage — Medicinal Herbs.” The bottom row: ”Deep Storage — Medicinal Herbs, Lowest Shelf.” Beside each notation, she had drawn a small circle — a circle whose position marked the actual measurement of that shelf’s width and depth, verified on-site. The circles were still slightly crooked. She had already verified the dimensions; the part she still had to verify — she looked at it one more time. The right-side shelf, the left-side shelf, and the right side of the left shelf. She always worked from left to right, and this time she would verify left to right, and she would finish verifying what she had not yet checked.

”Here.” The old plasterer, standing against the wall, raised his head and called toward Shafi: his hands were completely corroded by lime, the cracks in his skin so deep they ran pale white lines across the dark flesh. He was holding a trowel — a trowel whose blade had been custom-ground for this job, its width matched to the medicine cabinet’s internal dimensions. ”I’ve spent most of my life with a trowel in my hand, and never once has a trowel been ground to fit the inside of a medicine cabinet.” His finger ran down the trowel’s blade — checking the height and width one last time — then stopped at the narrowest quarter-inch: ”That notch there — that’s for the seed-drawer. You get that dimension right, and the seeds won’t spill.”

While he mixed the mortar, Shafi pulled out her leather tally-sheet and, beside the trowel’s measurement, added one more notation: The fill-height clearance — between the jar lid and the shelf above — is one finger-width. When she finished writing, she used the hem of her tunic to wipe away the wet medicine stain that had soaked through the leather from the previous entry, then set the sheet aside — not in any old place, but in the exact spot where she could reach it without looking away from the wall.

He took one look at the notations in Shafi’s hand, and his eyes paused on the leather sheet — then he turned without a word and scored a shallow line into the freshly laid north wall of the pharmacy with his trowel. The groove’s height — it matched the height of the seed-drawer exactly. ”Later, once this wall is finished and plastered, whoever looks at this groove will know — there was a cabinet here, set to this height.” He added another sentence, quieter: ”If the height is dead true, the trowel won’t have wasted its edge. If it’s not — the edge was wasted.”

Shafi crouched down and measured the groove with her finger, then pulled out a thin strip of wood — half the length of her forearm — from her sash. The strip had come from the scrap pile on the construction site; she had marked a notch in charcoal at the measured height. When she laid the wood strip into that groove, it matched exactly.

”Dead true,” she said.

The old plasterer did not smile. He did not say anything else. He only picked up his trowel, scooped a load of mortar, and began spreading it across the wall at a speed slightly slower than before — a speed that left room in its rhythm for the groove he had just carved, the way a musician leaves space between notes for the one that has not yet been played.

Imset had been standing in the pharmacy’s doorway the entire time, listening to Shafi count the cabinet heights and to the old plasterer confirm them with his trowel. He had watched Shafi slide that wooden measuring strip in, pull it back out, and study it for a long moment. He did not walk over. He simply turned and walked into the unfinished treatment ward — the one with no roof, its walls still only half their final height — and wrote on the wall with charcoal.

One hundred and three bundles — insufficient.

Four hundred and twenty-seven — insufficient.

Seven hundred and ninety-four — insufficient, each unit to be tracked.

When he wrote the last ”tracked,” the charcoal pressed down on the final stroke and held — a black dot, deeper than the rest. Then he set the charcoal down in the corner, exhaled the dust from his throat, and stood there in the silence, letting the charcoal settle.

Shafi poked her head out from the pharmacy side. ”Master — you wrote ’verify’ earlier.”

”’Verify the count’ — not ’verify.’ ’Track.’ Verify means you check once and it’s done. Track means it’s never done. Any time, any herb, you can check how much is left. If you don’t know how much is left, you don’t know when it runs out.” He said this and paused. Then added one more sentence: ”Mery — your senior apprentice brother. Has he turned the foundation formwork yet?”

”He’s turned it.” Shafi said, ”The flatbed stretcher-carrier — the one for the mild cases and the observation patients — he re-runs the full safety inspection monthly, all of it, every time.”

Imset nodded. He did not say ”good.” He did not say ”that’s settled.” He simply walked back to the charcoal-scratched wall and, beside the word ”track,” added one more line — a tally mark, the kind you notch into a tally-stick to count something. And that mark — pressed into the wall at the lowest point, near the ground — was something anyone could see, if they looked.

That same dusk, the first rumor-monger dispatched by Nekhem’s priesthood arrived at Akhetaten.

He was a temple runner — one of the lowest-ranking functionaries in the Theban priesthood’s system, the kind of man who had spent years delivering verbal messages between temple courtyards. He came off the ferry at the crossing, headed straight for the riverbank laundry-washing area, and got to work. His opening was simple: he made a show of sniffing the air. ”Can’t you smell it? Outside that healing hall — that smell — it’s the stench of an evil spirit still clinging to the place. Those herbs are all rotten, mold-eaten, and when you take them, you get sicker. That cripple — he was the former High Priest — everyone knows it. A cursed man shouldn’t be near a water source. If that’s not sorcery, what is?”

No one answered him. But no one drove him off, either. The laundry-washing women kept beating their laundry, their rhythms unchanged, but the talk between them had grown quieter. One of them straightened and glanced back — not at the man, but toward the direction of the healing hall — and then crouched down again. Another woman asked: ”Is it real?” The man did not answer. He only poured out a dipperful of river water and washed both his hands. The four people around him were all wringing wet laundry. The first one finished wringing, then straightened without picking up her basket, and stood there holding the wet clothes in both hands, then lowered them again — as if something she had been about to say had turned out to be heavier than she thought. Then she wrung the clothes dry, packed them into her basket, stood up, and walked away without saying goodbye to anyone. She walked fast — the way someone walks when they need to get home and ask someone what to believe.

By the time the rumor reached the encampment, Kamon was sitting on a flat stone at the ferry crossing. He had heard the rumor-monger’s words — all of them, beginning to end. He listened, and when it was over, he looked down at a spalled-off chunk of limestone that had been sitting at the edge of the ferry crossing, and he said — to no one, to the stone — ”The stone has no fault. The fault is in the hand that throws it.” Then he turned his head toward the ferry crossing’s downstream side. That was where the rumor-monger had gone — walking along the riverbank toward the laundry-washing women’s station. Kamon did not get up to chase him. He just kept examining the stone — pressing his thumb into the grain, testing whether the limestone seam would flake.

That rumor-monger almost collided with Meru at the ferry crossing. Meru’s body was heavy — a Nubian build, thick through the shoulders, and when Meru planted his feet, even a shove could not move him. He had been saying something at the ferry crossing, but when he turned and saw the man his own men had just manhandled, he stopped in the middle of the path, flanked by the laborers who had been hauling cargo with him, and raised his voice: ”You say the healing hall is an evil spirit’s lair. Then look — what do you see? Go on — look closer. Can’t you smell it? That’s medicine. That’s the smell of medicine. If you can’t smell it yourself, get closer and open your nose.”

The man’s face went red, and what he shouted back was aimed at Imset, but every man and woman at the ferry crossing heard it: the healing hall’s former High Priest had been exiled for cursing the water. A convict. A sorcerer. How much farther could he go? A few laborers looked up — looked at the man, then went back to work. Their movements were slightly quicker now, as if they were rushing to finish a quota before the end of the shift. The rumor-monger stood in the intersection, his lips moving — he wanted to say more. But what came out was nothing. He stood there a moment longer, then turned and left. When he walked, his stride was off — each step a little shorter than the one before.

Lu Zhu got word of the rumor back at the encampment. He did not chase the man. He did not make a public address to refute the rumor. He simply walked to the ferry crossing and stood on the high ground above the laundry-washing station, looking out across Akhetaten at sunset. The treatment ward, its walls nearly topped out. The pharmacy building, its roof already closed. The stone-paved construction road, the foundation work. In the sunset, the pharmacy’s walls glowed a warm clay-red. The ward — still without its roof — stood against the fading light, its frame stark and black, and atop the walls, the timber crew’s foreman — a dark silhouette — was shouting something toward the roofing gang, and someone on the roof shouted back, and then laughter carried across the dusk air.

It was Kamon who walked up beside Lu Zhu. ”A rumor needs evidence,” he said. ”Words alone won’t kill it. The healing hall needs to open its doors — and once it does, the first patient who walks out cured will be the only evidence that matters.” He paused, then added: ”That man — the one spreading the rumor — he said the healing hall belongs to Imset, the former High Priest. He named him.”

”That’s useful,” Lu Zhu said.

The words landed flat. But what lay inside them was: Akhetaten did not know who Imset was. And now the rumor-monger — the man trying to sink him — had told them. He was the former High Priest. Former High Priest of Thebes. They had just named his title to every person who did not yet know it. Lu Zhu said, ”The rumor was seeded by the very people who will later be undone by it. From now on, anything they say about him — people will remember one thing first: who he used to be.”

Kamon did not answer. He stood there, watching the roofing crew’s silhouettes slowly dissolving into the dark, and said nothing. Lu Zhu turned and left the ferry crossing as Shafi stopped before the wooden notice-board beside the pharmacy’s north wall — the one where she had posted a sheet during the afternoon. This paper, when she posted it, her fingers had touched something. It was old paper — its edges slightly curled, the crease marks stark and ordered, flattened carefully by someone who had smoothed it out fold by fold. She unfolded it. It was a medicine inventory record. Crisp, neat handwriting. Every character clean. The final line read:

Wormwood, sweet wormwood — sufficient, in stock. Go gather more.

On the paper: Imset’s handwriting. The same handwriting that had filled medical records in Thebes for twenty years — pressed down hard, even at the tips. Every stroke’s endpoint was drawn to a fine point, as if the hand writing had exhaled all its breath into that single character. The moment Shafi recognized whose hand had written it, she knew: her master was not asking for clarification. He was giving an instruction.

She held that sheet of paper on her knees and looked at it for a very long time. Her lips moved again, but no sound came. She was reciting the inventory in silence — memorizing each herb and its current count in one continuous pass, the way a scribe memorizes a page of accounts. And when she finished reciting, she paused, closed the sheet, and opened it again. ”Wormwood, sweet wormwood — sufficient, in stock. Go gather more.” She read it once more. Then she set the paper down and laid it in the inner folder of her medicine chest — the same folder that held the tally-sheets she had carried from Thebes. She did not ask her master what those inventory notes meant. She already knew. If she asked, her master would answer — but by answering, he would know that she had not figured it out herself. So she did not ask. She stood in the shadow of the pharmacy’s north wall, opened the sheet one more time, and began silently reciting from the top — every line, every row, committing each to memory. She had already memorized it all. The shelves in the pharmacy were still empty. The cabinet doors had not yet been hung. The walls still had gaps. And here she was, a sheet of paper spread across her knees, the paper’s shadow falling exactly across the two positions marked ”sweet wormwood” and ”dried chamomile.”

That night, the last charcoal line was drawn on the pharmacy’s interior wall. The stone had been dressed. The mortar had been mixed. The stone dust had been swept clean. Kamon stood inside the still-roofless pharmacy, beside the wall, and with charcoal, he drew a horizontal line. A single line — straight and true — dividing the wall into two halves. On the upper half: the herb cabinets. On the lower half: the storage shelf heights. The line was not drawn with ink and a ruling guide — it was drawn by hand, against a wall, and when his finger moved along it, pressing into the stone’s surface, he paused. At the point where the wall met the foundation, there was a recess — the gap left where the rising damp would be cut by the foundation’s raised lip, the space that lifted the base above the flood-grade height by a full finger-width. And when Kamon’s fingers reached the outer edge of that recess, he felt it — a fine, faint current of air. It was the night wind, threading up through the stone course from the ventilation ducts below — the ones that had been built into the foundation, following the stone’s grain, traveling upward along the wall. He kept his hand there a long time, his fingers flat against the stone’s face. A sensation — cool, alive, breathing — rising through the wall. Something no wall he had ever built had ever felt like.

The old plasterer walked over, his trowel in hand. He did not speak. He simply crouched beside Kamon and pressed his own trowel-deep groove into the wall corner at exactly the same height as Shafi’s medicine-cabinet template. And after he pressed it, he did not ask Kamon if it was right. He only wiped the trowel clean of wet lime on his sleeve, and then said, ”Roof it. The day you roof it, this pharmacy won’t be damp anymore.” He said this and touched the wall — his hand, weathered and cracked, feeling the night wind move through the stone course, not saying a word. The night wind threaded through those shelf-height grooves in the walls — walls that still had no roof, their raw tops catching the moonlight, and from a distance, looking up at them, those grooves seemed to glow with a light that came from somewhere beneath the skin.

The moonlight settled on the wall — its illumination so pale it looked like ink diluted with too much water, a washed-out blue-gray. The line Kamon had drawn with charcoal: a single line, black. The old plasterer’s trowel line: shallow, pale gray-white, sunken into the wall face. And between the two lines — between charcoal and trowel — was a gap. Exactly one finger-width. The same width Shafi had marked on her leather sheet for the cabinet clearance. When the night wind blew through that gap, it made a sound. A sound so fine — like a single page of papyrus breathing out.
