Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 92: Chapter 14: Pressed to the Brink — The Eve of the Decisive Battle

Three ledgers came onto the table together that night — and the city that had held for four months came to the end of its counting. The ledgers were placed on the stone one after another, and the men who placed them sat down without a word.

Mery’s grain account: the city’s grain, eaten tight, runs to the bottom before the twelfth month. Count in the south line’s boats, count in the grain scattered among the people, count in the two-tenths more mouths that the refugees had added to the city — at the very most, it holds to the beginning of the twelfth month, and the twelfth month is closer than any man at the table wanted to admit.

Shafi’s medicine account: wound medicine, twelve days. Staunching cloths, eight days. The rebels’ night raids had not stopped, the fire arrows came every two or three nights, burning what could be burned and drawing the healers’ strength out in the dark, and on the hospital shelves the empty places grew wider by the day — the way the empty places in every storehouse of the city had grown, all through the fourth month of the siege.

And a letter from the north, passed in through Horenheb: the Hittites had pitched camp beyond the border wall — before the snow fell, they would move. The northern line’s pleas for relief came letter after letter, each one more urgent than the last.

Three things, weighing on the stone table in the courtyard behind the official granary. The men around the lamp said nothing.

The lamp stood in the middle of the table, its flame low and steady, and the shadows of the five men leaned away from it into the dark of the courtyard. The wind came over the wall in gusts, making the flame lean and recover, lean and recover, the way the city itself had leaned and recovered through four months. No one reached for the flame to steady it. No one spoke. The silence was the kind that settles when every number on a page has been read to the end and there is nothing left to add.

Four months ago, on this same stone table, the defense map had lain. Back then they had reckoned six days to repair the walls and eight days to lay in grain. Now the walls still stood and the grain still held — but every figure on every ledger had walked to its end. Mery’s finger pressed on the last page of the grain account, the knuckle white. Shafi closed her medicine account and opened it, closed it and opened it. Kamon sat at the far edge, polishing his stone chisel with his sleeve, over and over.

”Speak, then.” Lu Zhu said. ”What kind of days are these?”

”Days?” Kamon spoke first, and he did not look up from the chisel. ”The days are these: hold on half a month more, and every hammer in this city will be too heavy to lift.”

”The hospital shelves,” Imset said, ”hold on half a month more, and they will hold nothing but boiled cloth.”

”The wall’s account, I’ll report.” Kamon said. ”Men are kept going by will; the wall is kept standing by patching. The men can still go, and the wall can still be patched. But the mortar for the patching — that’s near the bottom too.”

”Grain,” Mery said, ”is the first line. Before the twelfth month, that line breaks.”

”Water,” the chief officiant said, ”the wells still give enough. But the men who carry it are a little wearier every day.”

Five men, five accounts — each one drawn tighter than the last.

The words did not come all at once; they came one by one, each man waiting until the previous one had finished, as if the next figure needed the last one to stand on. When the fifth had spoken, the silence came back, and in the silence the accounts seemed to go on adding themselves — the grain dipping, the medicine dipping, the strength dipping, the whole city running down like the last sand in an hourglass.

At last it was Lu Zhu who spoke first. He spoke slowly, one word at a time:

”Four months. This city cannot go on holding like this.”

Everyone in the room watched him.

”Holding is wearing life away, drop by drop.” Lu Zhu said. ”We’ve worn it to today — the grain is gone, the medicine is gone, and the strength of the people is gone. Hold on any longer, and the rebels won’t need to take the city by force. It will empty itself.”

”Then what?” Kamon asked.

”Strike out.” Lu Zhu said. ”While the rebels are tired too, while their grain is burning too, while General Horenheb out there still holds five thousand blades in his hand. Attack from inside and out at once — and break the siege in one stroke.”

He said it the way he said everything that mattered: flat, and final, and already acted upon — the voice of a man who had done the counting at night, alone, until there was only one answer left. The word had not left his mouth in all these days of preparation; it had been sitting behind his teeth, waiting for the ledgers to give him the ground to stand on.

The room was so quiet you could hear the lamp wick crackle.

”When?” The adjutant asked.

”Soon.” Lu Zhu said. ”Within these nights. Pick a night with no moon — just before dawn — the city’s men out the south gate, the men outside against the south camp. Both sides move at once, and close on the south camp together. Break the south camp, and the siege is broken.”

”Odds?” Kamon asked.

”No odds.” Lu Zhu said. ”But if we don’t strike, ten chances out of ten — we all starve inside these walls. If we strike, there are still five chances to live.”

The number hung in the air — five chances. It was not a lucky number. It was not even a good number. But it was the first number in four months that pointed toward something other than the bottom of the ledgers.

The room fell silent again. After a long moment, Kamon nodded first: ”Strike. This city doesn’t sit and wait to die.”

”Strike.” Mery said. ”Grain — I’ll re-issue it by the count of a decisive battle.”

”Strike.” Imset said. ”The hospital’s accounts — I’ll turn them into war accounts tonight.”

”Strike.” The chief officiant said. ”The hearts of the city — I’ll hold them.”

The adjutant was the last to speak. He stood up, a soldier’s straightening of the back — the motion of a man who has decided to say a hard thing because it is his duty to say it — and said: ”Master Builder — let me speak as a soldier. Two hundred men out the south gate, against the south camp. The south camp is the hardest of the rebels’ three — the one that has held against us longest, the one their cavalry keeps closest. If we cannot break out—”

”If we cannot break out,” Lu Zhu said, ”we fall back into the city, seal the gate with earth bags. The city is still the city.”

”But by then, half the city’s soldiers are lost.”

”So,” Lu Zhu said, ”we can only strike out. There is no coming back.” He walked to the adjutant, and stood before him. ”The two hundred you pick — I don’t ask that they all know how to kill. I ask that they all dare to go forward. Ahead is the rebels’ camp; behind is four months of home. Forward, and there’s still a home. Backward — there’s nothing at all.”

The adjutant looked at him, and looked a long time. Then he nodded, heavily: ”Understood. These two hundred, I’ll pick as men who dare to die.”

”Not who dare to die.” Lu Zhu said. ”Who dare to live.”

The adjutant looked at him again — a long, measuring look, the look a soldier gives a man who has just said something the soldier will have to remember. Then he nodded, a different nod from the first: ”Understood.”

Lu Zhu struck the map with his charcoal stick: ”Good. Then from tonight — each man to his post.”

When the meeting broke, the sky was already paling — the first gray showing over the wall-head, the torches burning thin against it. The five walked out one after another, and no one’s step was light. Mery walked with his ledgers under his arm, holding them the way a man carries a thing he has sworn not to drop. The chief officiant paused at the courtyard gate and looked back once at the lamp, as if memorizing its flame. Kamon walked last; at the door he turned back and said:

”Lu Zhu — the south gate’s tunnel. I’ll rework it myself. Rework it so our people don’t stumble once.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”The south gate is yours.”

That same night, Lu Zhu’s letter went out.

The letter was to Horenheb — three pages of sheepskin, no more. The first page told the city’s true state: how much grain, how much medicine, how much strength of the people. The second page set out the plan of the decisive battle: when, which gate, which road, which signal. The third page carried one line only:

”Four months — all for this one night.”

Lu Zhu wrote the last line slowly, pressing the charcoal down — the way a mason sets a final stone. When the ink was dry, he rolled the pages, tied them with cord, and sealed them with the granary’s wax. He held the letter in his hand a moment before giving it over, weighing it the way a man weighs a decision.

A-Tu’s boat carried the letter to the south camp.

On that run, A-Tu moved with more care than on any run before. The rebels’ river patrols were unusually busy that night too. He hugged the reed beds, moving a little, stopping, moving — a stretch of water that took half a stick of incense by daylight took him a full half watch. When he reached the West Bank, the soldier who received him led him to Horenheb’s tent. Horenheb had not slept; the lamp in the tent was burning, and on the map the south gate’s position had already been circled three times.

”General,” A-Tu presented the letter, ”a letter from the city. The Master Builder says — this letter is heavier than grain.”

”Heavier than grain.” Horenheb took it. ”Let me see where the weight is.”

He turned the letter over in his hands before unsealing it — the seal unbroken, the cord tight. Then he broke the wax with his thumb and read the three pages by the lamp, once, slowly, and then a second time, faster, his finger moving down the lines. When he had finished, he read the third page one more time — the single line — and sat still for a moment.

He read the letter on the watchtower. When he had finished, he came down, pressed the letter flat on the table with his palm, and said: ”He’s finally going to strike.”

”General,” the old centurion said, ”how do we fight this battle?”

”The way he’s written it.” Horenheb said. ”The city comes out the south gate; I fall on the south camp. The time — a moonless night, half a watch before dawn. The signal — three swings of a torch on the wall-head; on my side, an answering fire.” He paused. ”There’s one thing more — he didn’t write it, so I’ll write it for him: once it starts, no one falls back. Fall back, and both sides die.”

”Yes.” The old centurion said.

”Answer him.” Horenheb said. ”Tell him — the south camp, five thousand men, have waited four months for this night too.”

The reply went back with A-Tu the same night. The letter was short, the characters large and few: ”On the third night, when there is no moon. Fire from the south means the general assault. Three swings on the wall-head — I will be there first.”

Lu Zhu read the reply and pressed it under the defense map. On the map, the south gate was ringed once more in heavy charcoal — the third ring, the ring that mattered. The other two rings had been for the night the city was taken and the night the gate was first sealed; this one was for the night the gate would open.

”The third night,” he said, low. ”There’s time.”

Seb was not in the city; the works of the south were held by the squad leaders from the western line. Horenheb called them together and passed the day of the battle down to them, layer by layer. The squad leaders did not ask questions. The men of the western line were used to taking orders.

Only one thing made Horenheb sit a while longer in his tent. He had a sheepskin brought, and wrote a few lines — writing them, stopping, looking at them, and writing them over — then sealed it, and handed it to a messenger: ”Take this letter to the West Bank. If I don’t come back from this night, send it to the western line. The western line will hold from now on as the letter says.”

The old centurion’s face went tight, and the messenger’s hand hesitated over the letter. Horenheb held it out without moving, and at last the messenger took it.

”General!” The old centurion was alarmed.

”A man who goes to war,” Horenheb said, ”must first settle the business of not coming back. Settle it, and he can put his whole mind on going forward.”

Inside the city, from the next day on, everything moved faster.

The south gate’s sally point was the first work to begin. Kamon led his men to widen the gate tunnel by two spans of the hand — a narrow tunnel makes men crowd at the exit, crowding makes them slow, slowness makes them arrows. The stone pavement inside the gate was relaid, leveled, bedded with earth. A thin layer of fine sand was spread over the road — against slipping. In the tunnel, fifty earth bags were stacked, neat as a wall — for sealing the gate: if they could not break out, fall back into the city, pile the bags, and the tunnel would be sealed.

Widening the tunnel was fine work. The south gate’s tunnel was old; the wall bases on both sides had been worn into grooves by decades of the gate’s turning — the wood of the pivots had ground the stone smooth, the way a river grinds a stone. Kamon had the bases cut true again, hung new pivots, and oiled them three times — the first coat to soak in, the second to seal, the third to shine. He tried it himself: the gate opened without a sound; it closed without a shake. He opened and closed it a third time, listening to the pivots, and only then nodded, once, the way he nodded at a wall that would stand.

”A tunnel a span narrower is a step slower.” Kamon said. ”A step slower — and one more man lies down outside.” He patted the two door panels, the wood sounding solid under his hand — the panels of the old gate, worn smooth at the edges by a thousand openings and closings, by the hands of generations of gatekeepers. ”The night these doors open, they are the throat of the whole city. The throat must be smooth.”

”Advance when we can; fall back when we must.” Kamon patted an earth bag — the bag thudding under his palm, the earth packed tight inside the cloth. ”These fifty bags — they’re the south gate’s second life. The first life is the door itself; the second is the wall you can raise behind it in ten breaths.”

For the shallow trench the rebels had dug outside the city, Lu Zhu had his own answer. He set the craftsmen to making forty plank bridges — two zhang long, three feet wide, four legs each. The moment the city’s men came out the south gate, the bridges were thrown across the trench, and a man could cross on them. The bridges were light; two men carried one, and they could keep up with a running charge.

The timber for the bridges came from the beams of two abandoned houses, pulled down for the purpose. The carpenters’ crew worked through the night — the saws and the hammers going until the small hours, the yard littered with shavings and the smell of fresh-cut wood filling the lane. The planks had to be level, the legs steady, the wedges of the four legs driven so tight no seam showed. The head carpenter knocked each bridge board by board, listening. A ”thunk, thunk” — a good board. A ”hollow, hollow” — back to work, the board lifted off and re-set, the wedges driven again.

”These bridges,” the head carpenter said, and he laid his hand flat on the nearest one, ”are the road laid for two hundred lives. Not one board may be false.”

”Once the bridges cross the trench,” Lu Zhu said to the sally men, and he walked along the row of bridges as he spoke, his hand touching each in turn, ”leave them on the trench. Don’t look back at them. The men behind you cross on your bridges. Bridge there — road there.”

The adjutant took a whole day to pick his men.

He set up a table in the materials yard and went through the rolls name by name — the defense companies, then the refugee youth who had drilled with spears of sharpened wood. Men came before him one by one; he looked at their hands, their shoulders, their eyes, and asked each one the same two questions: can you run a li without stopping, and will you go forward if the man ahead of you falls? Some were sent away; some were kept. By dusk he had his two hundred, and the kept ones stood in a loose square in the yard, not yet a company, not yet sure what they were — only sure that they had been chosen for something.

The sally force could not be too large — the city still needed men to hold it. From the defense companies and the refugee youth, he picked two hundred. Two tests for every man: a sound body, and steady nerve. Those chosen were formed into two companies — one to lead the attack, one to follow and support. The lead company were men who had seen blood; half the support company were wall-repairing craftsmen. They were not there to fight — they carried their tools: hammers, spades, crowbars. Where the attack tore open a gap, they would follow and repair, follow and wrench, tearing the rebels’ south camp apart from the breach, section by section.

During the picking, there was a small incident. A-Ka wanted to go too, and the adjutant blocked him: ”Your shoulder’s barely healed — what are you pushing into?” A-Ka stood his ground, his neck stiff: ”I’ve repaired this wall four months — on what grounds can’t I go tear down their camp?” The two of them stood locked in the materials yard, the picks and shovels stacked around them, the other men pretending not to watch. At last Kamon came over — walking slowly, the way he did when he had already decided the argument — and said: ”A-Ka — you’re more use inside the city than out. The moment the south gate opens, the bridges behind it, the road behind it, the wall behind it — all need hands. Your shoulder can’t take the arrows outside, but it can take the work inside.” A-Ka said nothing. He squatted down and retied his sandal laces, once, twice, and at last forced out: ”Then I’ll carry the plank bridges into the tunnel. When they go out, they can reach them with one hand.”

”That’s it.” Kamon said. ”You carry bridges behind; they cross the trench ahead. The two of you together — that’s a road.”

A-Ka stood a moment longer, the wind moving past him in the yard. Then he nodded, once, and walked to the tunnel to do as he had said — lifting the bridges one by one, carrying them in, stacking them where a man reaching for one would find it with his hand in the dark.

”You’re not soldiers.” Kamon said to the company of craftsmen, and he walked down their line as he spoke, looking at each tool in turn — the hammers, the spades, the crowbars, the chisels — the tools of his own trade, held by men of his own trade. ”But the tools in your hands cut better than blades. Outside, stay close behind the lead men. They open the wall; you take the camp apart. Take the camp apart, and the siege falls.”

The craftsmen said nothing. One by one, they gripped their tools until the knuckles showed — the grip of men who had held them a thousand days, and were holding them now the way a soldier holds a sword.

In the hospital, Imset set up the war account.

”All the wound medicine moves to the south gate.” He said, and he said it the way a general gives an order — the healer’s voice gone flat and soldierly. ”The wounded come back from the south gate, and the hospital receives them. Stretchers — ten on the wall-head, ten at the south gate, ten kept here.” He paused, and when he spoke again the soldierly note dropped, leaving the healer: ”And one rule more — the lightly wounded do not leave the line. Light wounds are bound up and sent back. On this night, the hospital’s door opens for the badly wounded only.”

”Teacher,” Shafi said, and she held up the ledger so that the figures could be seen in the lamplight — the columns of four months, the arrows pointing down, ”this is all the medicine there is.”

”Exactly because it’s all,” Imset said, ”every packet must be spent on the blade of the knife.”

He re-arranged the hospital staff into shifts. The medicine boys split into two groups: one stayed at the hospital, and one went with the stretcher crews to set up a small station at the lane mouth behind the south gate — stanching, bandaging, on the spot. Only the badly wounded were carried to the hospital.

”The little station at the lane mouth,” Imset said, ”is the hospital’s hand stretched out to the city gate. The further the hand reaches, the more lives are picked up.”

He said it as he checked the station’s supplies himself — the packets of stanching powder, the rolls of clean cloth, the little knife — arranging them on the board in the order they would be needed, the order a wounded man’s body would demand them in the dark.

After dark, the hospital’s lamps burned brighter than on any night before.

Sister Wei led the women in boiling the cloth strips, pot after pot — the steam rising in white columns into the night, the women working in shifts so that the pot was never without a pair of hands. The boiled cloth was spread over the courtyard to dry, row after row on the lines, and the whole yard carried that smell — the smell of clean cloth and steam and the quiet work of women — the smell that people had come to trust more than anything else in a siege. Old Neht sharpened his little bronze knife, over and over, the whetstone singing under the blade, until the steel would show a face in it.

”This knife,” he said, ”has been with me forty years. Tomorrow night, it sees its great battle.”

”Uncle Neht,” Sister Wei said, ”old arms and old legs — don’t push yourself to the front tomorrow night.”

”I won’t push to the front.” Old Neht said. ”I’ll squat in that little station at the lane mouth. These eyes have sorted the sick from the dying all my life. Tomorrow night, who is heavy and who is light — one look from me, and I’ll save Priest Imset half a packet of medicine.”

”Done.” Sister Wei said. ”Then you hold the lane mouth. I’ll keep the station’s lamp filled with oil.”

The old man nodded and went back to his knife, the whetstone singing again — the sound steady, unhurried, the sound of a man who had spent forty years preparing for the moment he was given, and meant to be ready for it when it came.

Later in the night, Sister Wei and Shafi sat by the hospital door and talked a while.

”Shafi,” Sister Wei said, ”tomorrow night — are you afraid?”

”Afraid.” Shafi said. ”Afraid there won’t be enough medicine. Afraid my hands will be too slow. Afraid someone will be carried out and not carried back.”

”I’m afraid too.” Sister Wei said, and she said it quietly, looking out at the dark. ”My brother died in the fighting. Back then, if there had been a hospital like this, people like these...” she did not finish; she folded the boiled cloth again, smoothing the folds with her palm. ”So tomorrow night, all the more, I have to do my work clean. One more bound up, one more carried back — each one is a repayment for my brother.”

”Sister Wei,” Shafi said, ”after tomorrow night — will you teach me to know the herbs? What you learned on the western line — I should learn it too.”

”I will.” Sister Wei said. ”When tomorrow night is past. As long as this city stands, the two of us will have time.”

Shafi nodded. She looked up at the lamp that never went out. The flame was small, swaying in the night wind, one way and the other — but it did not go out. The two women sat side by side on the hospital step, and neither spoke any more; the night was full of the small sounds of the city — a distant ram, a dog, the wind in the reeds beyond the wall. Behind them, the hospital’s lamps burned bright — like an island that would not sink.

In the small hours, A-Tu came back.

He brought word from the West Bank, from Horenheb: the men of the south camp were all in position. The cavalry had pressed up on both wings; the infantry were hidden behind the slope. They were waiting only for three swings of the torch on the wall-head to begin moving in.

”And,” A-Tu said, ”General Horenheb sends a message — ’Tell the city: the men of the western line never miss an appointment.’”

”Noted.” Lu Zhu said. ”Tell the general — the city’s gate does not miss one either.”

A-Tu acknowledged. He pushed his boat off and headed back across the river. These days his boat lay in the reeds of the West Bank — after the decisive battle, the first wounded and the first soldiers from outside would cross on his boat.

”A-Tu.” Lu Zhu called him from the bank.

”Master Builder.”

”Tomorrow night, your boat is the city’s third gate.” Lu Zhu said. ”The first gate is the south gate; the second is the line at the south of the city; the third is your boat. If all three gates are open, the city wins.”

A-Tu said nothing. He stood in the bow — the pole still in his hand, his shoulders square — and raised his hands in the clasped greeting of the shore, a full formal bow: this old man who had spent half his life on the water, answering a man of the shore with the shore’s own salute for the first time. Then he pushed off, the pole dipping, and the boat slid into the reeds and was gone, the only sign of it the moving of the reed tops.

Imset finished his rounds of the ward and stood in the middle of the empty yard. The lamp that never went out was still burning there. He looked at it a long time, then said to Shafi: ”This lamp has not gone out since the day the hospital was raised. Tomorrow night — it must not go out either.”

”I’ve laid in three days of oil.” Shafi said.

”No.” Imset said. ”Remember this — no matter what is happening outside tomorrow night, this lamp is not allowed to go out. It is for the people who are carried back to see. And it is for the people who are not carried back to see.”

Shafi said nothing. She walked over, wiped the lamp glass clean, and straightened the wick, again and again, until it stood up like a small flame with its back straight. Then she stood back and looked at it — the lamp that had burned through every night of the siege, through the fire-arrow raids and the fever winters and the nights when the medicine shelves stood nearly empty. It would burn through this night too. That much, at least, was in her hands.

Mery’s part of the preparation was the dry provisions.

He drew out a batch of the good flour from the official granary and had the women bake it into thick flatbreads — three fingers thicker than the everyday loaves, each wrapped in oilcloth, two to a man. This was the life that the sally men would carry against their chests.

The baking had the order of a festival, but busier. The women of the south of the city and the women of the Haven all came — the Haven’s women and the city’s women standing side by side at the same kneading boards, the way they had stood at the same well and the same queue for four months. Eight cauldrons went at once, the fire roaring under each, and the smell of baking bread drifted half a street downwind, so that the houses along the lane opened their doors and the children came out to breathe it in. A child crouched at the kitchen door, sniffing: ”Mother — it smells good.” His mother did not look up from the dough: ”Smells good? These loaves aren’t for you. They’re for the men who go out tomorrow night.” The child swallowed, and said: ”Then I’ll help you turn them.” His mother laughed: ”Done. Turning the loaves — that counts as your share of the work.”

When the loaves were done, Mery counted them one by one. Two hundred men, four hundred loaves — not one missing. Counting, he said suddenly: ”The loaves are thick, and lives are thin. Whoever carries these four hundred loaves in his shirt — he has to come back whole.”

At the distribution, a young lad took his loaves but did not hurry away. He asked: ”Master Mery — could I keep half a loaf for my mother?”

”No.” Mery said. ”These loaves are for you to eat yourself when the fighting is over. Your mother’s rations — the official granary issues them separately. Save half a loaf for your mother, and tomorrow night your hands will be a little weaker. A little weaker — a little more danger.” He paused. ”You coming back whole is worth ten thousand times more than half a loaf.”

The lad nodded, and tucked the loaves into his shirt, carefully, smoothing the cloth over them — the motion of a boy who had learned, in four months, to treat every provision as something precious, the way a farmer treats seed grain.

”And one thing more.” Mery said. ”The accounts after the battle — I have to list them now. If the city falls, the walls must be repaired, the camp cleared, the dead buried, the grain restocked. Which comes first, which comes after — there must be a list. Without it, even a victory is chaos.”

”Make the list.” Lu Zhu said. ”It matters as much as the list of the men who go out.”

Mery’s post-battle list ran three pages: the first page was repair — the south gate, the city wall, the official granary, the hospital, every damage repaired in turn; the second page was clearing — the rebels’ camp, the abandoned goods, the corpses, burned and buried, against disease; the third page was restocking — grain, medicine, water, firewood, brought back in one by one, the city fed awake before anything else.

”This list,” Mery said, and he laid his hand flat on it, ”I’ll keep it here. When tomorrow night is past, it will be put to use.”

While he wrote, Weser sat beside him watching the whole time — the old keeper’s eyes following the pen down each page, the way a man watches a craftsman he trusts at work. When the old keeper had seen it all, he said: ”Mery — this list of yours is heavier than my keys.”

”Your keys open the granary door.” Mery said. ”This list opens the road back. If the gate falls, the road back must be open. Road back open — then the city is truly alive again.”

Weser nodded. He drew the string of old keys from inside his robe — keys polished bright by years of use — and laid them beside the list: ”Then from tomorrow night, these keys travel with the list.”

The chief officiant’s steadying of the people was done quietly too.

He did not say ”the battle is coming.” He only said: ”These nights, if you hear sounds in the dark, don’t be alarmed. Sleep as you sleep; bolt your doors as you bolt them. The city’s affairs — the people above them are holding them.” The night patrol’s lamps ran twice as often as before, from lane head to lane end, all night long — the lamp-light crossing the dark lanes the way a needle crosses cloth, stitching the city’s sleep shut.

Among the patrolmen was an old warden past sixty. Both his sons had been put into the sally force. He did not speak of it; he only held his lantern higher, and lit every lane until it was bright as a courtyard. Someone asked him: ”You’re not worried?” He said: ”Worried. But worry can’t be used as a blade. I keep my lantern bright — so that when my sons come back, they can see the road.”

He said it without looking away from the lane, and the patrolmen behind him said nothing; they only raised their own lamps a little higher, and the lamps went on down the lane, one after another, like a slow bright tide making its rounds.

But the hearts of the people could not be hidden.

At the market, the bread-sellers, the water-carriers, the knife-grinders all felt that something had changed. The guards on the wall-head were more numerous — the patrols crossing each other’s paths, the watches changing at odd hours. The granary doors were closed tighter; the hospital’s lamps burned later than usual, the light spilling over the threshold into the lane. No one asked. But in every eye there was the same sentence written — not spoken, not even shaped in the mouth, but standing clear in the silence between one neighbor and the next:

Something great is about to happen.

That night, in a lane north of the city, an old woman gathered her two grandsons into her arms and said: ”Tomorrow night, if there is noise outside, you go down into the cellar. Whatever anyone calls, don’t come out.” The older grandson asked: ”Grandmother — are the rebels breaking in?” The old woman said: ”I don’t know. But our cellar was built by the Master Builder’s people — the beams tested, the roof stoned. Hide in there, and it won’t fall.” The two boys nodded, and burrowed deeper into her arms; the old woman held them and did not close her eyes, listening to the night with the whole of her old body.

Outside the city, in the rebels’ camp, there were men who could not sleep either.

Nekhem’s tent had burned its lamp these nights without rest. The scouts he sent out reported: the city’s smoke rose as usual; the city’s drums beat as usual. But he could not say what was wrong — perhaps it was that everything was too usual. Four months of siege — the city’s smoke should not rise this straight; the city’s drums should not beat this evenly.

”The city,” he asked the man in white, and the question was put quietly, the way a man asks about a sick friend he has been avoiding asking about, ”what movement recently?”

”No movement.” The man in white said. ”Only stillness. Stillness like... a pool of water, too deep to see the bottom.”

”Stillness.” Nekhem repeated the word. He walked to the sand table and looked at the city that had held for four months. The city on the table was built by his own hands — the walls laid by his own fingers, the gates set by his own judgment, the positions of the granaries and the wells and the temple marked with the care of a man who had known the city before the war and meant to know it after. But at this moment, looking at it, he felt suddenly that it was like a beast that had slept four months, and was opening its eyes, little by little — and that the city on the table was not the same city that lay behind the real walls.

He walked a full circle around the sand table, very slowly, his white robe sweeping the ground without taking up a speck of dust — the gait of a man who has walked the same circle many nights, and finds the walking easier than the stopping. On the second circle, he stopped at the south gate’s position, and with the pad of his finger drew one slow line across the sand — a line that followed the road from the gate to the river, the road the grain had come in on, the road an army would come out on.

”Four months.” He said. ”The city’s grain should be at the bottom. The medicine should be at the bottom. And the strength of the people — more than at the bottom. A man at the end of his rope has only two roads — he kneels, or he lunges outward.”

”High Priest — you mean they will...”

”They will strike.” Nekhem said. ”Within these days. On the night with no moon, no wind, the darkest hour — the hour when a man believes the world is asleep and the world is watching him.” He raised his head, and his eyes moved over the three camps in the dark. ”Pass the order: from tonight, no man of any camp takes off his armor, no horse takes off its saddle. However straight the city’s smoke rises, however even its drums beat — don’t believe it. Either they are dying on their feet — or—” he paused, ”—they are waiting for a night.”

Panhesy came back from the south camp, and his face was not good either. He said: ”The king’s troops south of the city — these two days they are not right. The cavalry rides out even by day; the scouts come wave after wave, riding the same roads over and over, stopping at the same bends. It looks like... they are measuring the roads — measuring them the way a man measures a road he means to walk in the dark.”

”Measuring roads.” Nekhem said. ”A man who measures roads means to walk them. If they mean to move, let them move. The south camp’s trench — dig one more line. The fires outside the camp gate — burn them twice as bright.” He said it slowly: ”They want to strike from inside and out. Then we wait for them to close. When they close, we’ll see who breaks first.”

”High Priest,” Panhesy said, ”if it truly is the decisive battle — shouldn’t we strike first?”

”No.” Nekhem said. ”The one who strikes first shows his weak point first. We have besieged them four months, waiting for them to move. The night they move — that is the last night of this war. Win — and the city is ours. Lose—” he stopped, and it was a long time before he said, ”—if we lose, we lose at the foot of the wall.”

He raised his head, and his gaze passed through the tent curtain and came to rest on the wall-head in the dark. On the wall-head, the torches burned, one after another, as if counting something.

”Panhesy.” He said suddenly.

”Your general is here.”

”The south camp — you will sit in it yourself.” Nekhem said. ”The king’s troops south of the city are Horenheb’s. That man has held the western line thirty years — he has fought wolves and won. If he comes, he comes from the south. The south camp’s trench — dig it deeper tonight; the fires outside the gate — fill them full.” He paused. ”And one thing more: when the city’s gate opens, it will be the south gate. The south gate faces your camp. When they come out, the first wave breaks against you.”

”Your general understands.” Panhesy said. ”I will make the south camp a well.”

He said it standing straight, the answer of a soldier to his commander — but his eyes, fixed on the sand table’s south gate, had the look of a man already running the night through his head: the gate opening, the men pouring out, the moment when the trap must close and must not close too soon.

”A well?” Nekhem said. ”A well traps people. Make the south camp a mouth instead. When they lunge out, let them come in. Once they are in — close from both sides—” he made a closing gesture with his hands.

”High Priest means — close the gate on the dog?”

”Closing the gate,” Nekhem said, ”means first letting the dog think the gate is open a crack.”

The night deepened. In the great camp, the torches sank lower, one by one. In Nekhem’s tent, the lamp still burned.

He did not sleep. He sat at the table, the old scripture spread before him, open halfway, unread — the pages yellowed, the characters of a hundred years standing in their old columns. His fingers moved along the edge of the pages, one stroke at a time, as if stroking the emblem that was not in his hand — the ram’s-head emblem that had been his for thirty years and now lay in a stranger’s chest somewhere behind the city walls.

”Four months.” He said, low, the words coming out as if he were counting an account. ”I have surrounded this city four months. Cut off their water — they dug wells. Burned their grain — they hid grain. Broke their walls — they patched them. Scattered their hearts — they gathered themselves again.” He said it slowly, like a man totaling a column. ”What kind of lives do the people of this city have?”

”High Priest,” the man in white said from outside the curtain, low, ”rest a little.”

”There is no rest.” Nekhem said. ”This battle is the road we chose ourselves — we chose it the day the edict was torn up and the banners were sewn. We have walked it to this night, and there is no turning back.” He raised his head and looked at the lamp flame. ”The city’s lamps are still burning. Their lamps burn — so our blades cannot sleep.”

He stood and walked to the tent mouth and lifted the curtain. The wall-head torches ran in a line through the dark — the line he had watched every night for four months, from the night he first rode up the river and saw the city sealed itself. The line was very still — still as a bowstring drawn to its limit.

”What a city.” He said. ”Pity — it must be blooded first.”

The day of the decisive battle was fixed for the third night.

No moon. Wind from the north, rattling the banners on the wall-head — a wind that would carry sound the wrong way for an army trying to move quietly, and the leaders of both sides knew it, and both sides had chosen it anyway, because the cloud meant no moon, and no moon meant the city’s gate could open under the cover of the deepest dark.

The night before, Lu Zhu went over everything once more.

The watch on the wall-head was doubled. The sally force rehearsed the exit from the south gate three times. The first run was disorderly; the second was faster; the third — from the tunnel to the trench — took less than half a stick of incense. Kamon squatted by the tunnel, counting the steps: ”It can be faster. Tomorrow night — no one looks back.”

In the rehearsals, there were no torches and no shouted orders — only whistles. One short whistle: ”out.” One long whistle: ”fall back.” Three whistles in a row: ”bridges.” The whistles were thin and sharp, carrying no farther than the tunnel — the sound of a bird, to any ear beyond the wall. Two hundred men, in the black tunnel, moving in and out like a column of rats used to night roads, the only light the faint gray of the sky through the gate gap. After the third run, Kamon said: ”Enough. Practice more, and the feet will blister. Save the strength for tomorrow night.”

The hospital’s stretcher crews ran the road from the south gate to the hospital five times, until everyone was gasping. Imset said: ”Tomorrow night, you run faster than this. Carrying people — still faster.”

One stretcher-bearer twisted his ankle on the run and sat down, his face white. Shafi went over, worked the ankle with her hands, and said: ”Twisted ankle — you’re replaced tomorrow night. The wounded can’t be carried by the wounded.” The bearer was frantic: ”Half a night’s rest and I can walk!” Shafi said: ”You can walk in half a night — can you run tomorrow night?” He said nothing. Shafi bound a little medicine on it and said: ”Tomorrow night you hold the hospital. Someone else runs your road for you. The lamp you keep — that is one end of the road too.”

The bearer sat a moment longer, his breath evening out, and then he stood — testing the ankle, once, wincing, and taking his weight off it. He said nothing more; he limped back to the hospital and took his place by the lamp, the place he would hold until morning.

Mery issued the dry provisions. One person, two thick loaves, wrapped in oilcloth. He handed them out one by one, and at the end said: ”When you eat, don’t save. On this night, strength is worth more than grain.”

Nefer led the women in sweeping the lanes behind the south gate clean, from end to end — that was the road the wounded would come back by. On the road, there must not be one stone to trip a foot.

The chief officiant’s night patrol took its last round very slowly. The lamps went from the south of the city to the north, one after another. The old people were asleep; the children were asleep. Only the torches on the wall-head and the lamps of the patrol were awake.

”This city,” the chief officiant said to his patrolmen, his lamp held high over the sleeping roofs, ”after tomorrow night, will not have to spend its nights awake and sleepless.”

He said it low, so as not to wake the houses; the patrolmen answered with a nod, and the lamps went on, one lane, two lanes, the light sliding over the closed doors like a hand checking them one by one.

The chief officiant himself did not mean to sleep that night.

He went back to the old temple’s front hall — the place where, four months ago, he had been held prisoner, the hall where the old gods had stood in their niches and the incense had risen for centuries. Now the hall stood empty, only a few eternal lamps burning, and the old smell of the temple filling it — old stone, old incense, the cold of a place where prayers had once hung thick as smoke. He stood in the middle of the hall and looked out. Outside were the lamps of the Haven, the lamps of the granary, the lamps of the hospital.

”Four months ago,” he said, low, ”I was in this city waiting to die. Now I am in this city waiting to live.”

He thought suddenly of Nekhem — the man who had imprisoned him, out there in the camp beyond the walls. Both of them were awake, separated by four months of fire and blood, waiting for the same dawn.

”High Priest,” he said to the night, ”what you wait for and what I wait for are not the same after all. You wait for the city. I wait for the people in the city. A city can change masters. People cannot change their lives.”

When he had said it, he straightened his ceremonial robe and went out of the temple door. Outside, two patrolmen waited with lamps. The chief officiant took one of the lamps and said: ”Come. Tonight, we light every lamp in this city, one by one.”

In the rebels’ camp, the night was tight as well.

The watch at the trench was tripled. The firewood piles outside the camp gate burned brighter than usual. Panhesy inspected the camps himself, from the south camp to the east camp, and back again — the long walk that he had made every night of the siege, when the camp was his to guard and the city his to watch. He saw the soldiers of the camp squatting by the fires with their blades in their arms, not one of them speaking; the fires themselves were burning with a kind of nervous brightness, the wood thrown on in armfuls by men who could not sit still. After four months of war, everyone knew — the nights that are unnaturally quiet are the nights that carry something great behind them.

Panhesy had also reworked the south camp’s layout. He moved his two hundred best personal guards behind the camp gate that faced the south gate, hidden among the carts and the horse-stop stakes — the first blade prepared for the men who would come out of the city. The guards squatted in the gaps, their blades drawn but held low, their breath quiet; no one spoke, the way men do not speak in the last moment before a door opens. Behind the gate’s arrow-loops on both sides, he hid fifty archers, their bows strung, their quivers set within reach. The fire outside the camp gate was deliberately damped down by half — the wood raked apart, the flames lowered, so that a man charging in would stumble first into the half-light, his eyes not yet adjusted — exactly the moment for arrows.

”This is called the threefold welcome.” Panhesy said to his guards, and he spoke it slowly, the way a man teaches a craft he has built himself, so that every man who heard it would carry the whole plan in his head. ”The first blade outside the gate is for their feet; the second on the arrow-loops is for their eyes; the carts in the camp’s heart are the third. Past all three — then they are inside the camp.” He paused. ”I’ll wager they don’t get past the second.”

”The general’s plan is fine.” The guards’ captain flattered.

”Not fine.” Panhesy said. ”It’s what four months of watching them repair walls has taught me. Their people know how to repair; they don’t know how to charge. Two hundred men out the gate — that’s two hundred mud-bricks that breathe.”

He said it loudly, as if to bolster himself. But only he knew that the hand gripping his sword-hilt was sweating — the sweat cold on the leather, the grip tighter than it had been in any battle of the siege. He said the words again in his mind, and they sounded no more certain the second time.

”Keep sharp.” Panhesy said, walking along the line — and the words were for the men, but the walk was for himself, the circuit he made every night to make the camp feel held, the camp and his own nerves together. ”Tomorrow night, the city’s gate will open. When the gate opens — whoever runs first to block it, I promote. Whoever takes one step back—” he did not finish; he only swung his blade once through the firelight. The fire ran along the steel, one white streak.

At a watch-post on the east end of the south camp, a veteran soldier of over forty squatted — wrapped in a torn sheepskin coat, his spear across his knees, his eyes fixed on the direction of the city. A young soldier edged closer and asked, low: ”Uncle — is it really a fight tomorrow night?”

”A fight.” The veteran said. ”If we don’t fight, both sides dry up.”

”Then do you think we can win?”

The veteran did not answer. He fed a stick of wood into the fire, and the light crossed his wind-roughened face. After a long while, he said: ”My home is in Upper Egypt. I was taken for a soldier — seized for the levy. My family’s field has lain waste two years, and my mother’s letters stopped coming last spring.” He poked the fire again, and the sparks rose. ”If we win this war, can I go home and plant it?” He paused. ”The High Priest says — win, and everything will be well. I don’t know either.”

”I was seized too.” The young soldier said. ”I miss my mother.”

The veteran looked at him, and laid a corner of his sheepskin coat over the young man’s shoulders — the coat still carrying the warmth of the old man’s back. ”Sleep. If it truly is a fight tomorrow night, keeping your eyes open won’t dodge it. Save your strength — and you might live.”

The young soldier leaned against the parapet and closed his eyes. The fire crackled and sank; the veteran fed it again, and again, the way a man feeds a thing he means to keep alive till morning. The firelight moved across the two figures, the old and the young, and the shadows of the camp ran out behind them into the dark.

At midnight, Horenheb made his last inspection of the works south of the city.

He walked the line in the dark without a lamp — he knew every step of it, the way a man knows the rooms of his own house. Ten watchtowers, their smoke rising straight in the night. The trench was there; the wall was there; the horse-stop stakes were there — the works he and Seb had raised through the first weeks of the siege, when the city had just been sealed and every day had brought a new alarm. He stood on the slope and looked toward the city. The wall-head torches ran in one line. He knew that behind that line, Lu Zhu was standing too — looking back the same way, the way two men at the two ends of a rope look at each other before they pull.

”Old centurion.” He said.

”Here.”

”Tomorrow night, you hold the camp. I lead the attack.”

”General!” The old centurion said. ”You are the commander of an army — since when does a commander lead the attack!”

”The battles of the western line,” Horenheb said, ”which one did I not go up the wall first?” He paused. ”This night — if it succeeds, Egypt’s door stays open. If it fails, Horenheb is buried in the trench south of the city.”

The old centurion opened his mouth, and in the end could not get the words out. He turned and tightened the blade at his waist once more.

Horenheb counted the cavalry one last time — five hundred riders, split into two wings. The left wing blocked the east camp’s relief; the right wing sealed the north camp’s road. The thousand infantry in the middle followed him straight at the waist of the south camp.

”Remember.” He said to the cavalry centurions. ”This night, we don’t ask for many kills. We ask for speed. Speed — fast enough that they can’t close around us; fast enough that the city’s gate stays open until dawn.”

”Yes!” The centurions answered in one voice.

When the counting was done, Horenheb went back up on the watchtower alone.

The works below the tower — he and Seb had dug them spade by spade. The trench, the wall, the stakes, the ten towers — he had walked every one. Now he would lead men out from the far side of this line. The line he had held four months would become, tomorrow, the starting ground of an attack.

”If Seb were here,” he said, low, ”he’d be squatting under the tower right now, checking the line — the boy could not pass a tower without testing its footing, even in the dark.” The thought of the boy — the apprentice who had grown up on these works, who had gone north with the forty craftsmen and the wall drawings — sat with him a moment in the dark, and then he let it go, the way a man lets go of a rope he must trust to another hand.

He looked up at the city. The wall-head torches still burned in the wind. He knew that in that city, Lu Zhu was looking this way too. Two men who had spent their lives on walls, separated by four months of war, waiting for the same hour.

”Old friend.” He said. ”Tomorrow night — it’s on you.”

Near dawn, Lu Zhu climbed the south gate’s tower.

He stood behind the crenellations and looked south. The rebels’ camp lay in a black mass in the night. Further south, in the direction of the city, the lights of the ten watchtowers hung like ten stars pinned to black cloth.

”Four months.” He said, low. ”All for tomorrow night.”

On the night four months ago, he had stood on the riverbank outside this city and listened to the gates close, one after another. Back then, his whole mind had been on how to get in. Later, once inside, his whole mind had been on how to hold. Now he was thinking of how to get out — with these two hundred men, out through this gate, striking out.

”Four months of holding,” he said to himself, ”for the day you no longer have to hold.”

He remembered many things. The granary on the West Bank — the first building he had raised in this country, the building that had taught him the language of the land. The temple in the new capital, whose beams he had set and whose light he had measured. The towers of the western line, raised tower by tower against the desert raiders. Every wall of these four months in this city, every well dug under fire, every sack of grain counted, every man carried back from the wall. He remembered that he was a man from another world, a stranger here — a builder who had come to this country with a set of measurements and a stubborn idea — who had repaired houses half his life, and was now leading men out through a gate to strike.

”Back home,” he said, low, ”I never even fought with my fists. And here — I’m leading soldiers.”

He smiled. The smile was shallow — like a single spark in the dark.

”But these soldiers,” he said again, ”aren’t going out to kill. They’re going out to settle these four months. Settled — and people can go home. They go home, and I go home too.”

He looked up at the sky. There were no stars — only a thick bank of cloud. He knew it was well that the cloud would not break: with the cloud pressing down, the moon could not come out. No moon — and the night was theirs.

He walked a full circle around the tower. Underfoot was the wall Kamon’s men had patched five times — five repairs in four months, each patch a different color of earth, the way a garment shows its mending. In the wall there were new bricks and old bricks, lime-filled joints and the scars of battering rams — the places where the ram had bitten and the wall had healed over. He reached out and touched a crenellation — cold, rough, like a hand grown thick with calluses.

”This wall,” he said, low, ”will still be standing here after tomorrow. It outlives all of us.”

The wind came from the north, lifting the hem of his robe and letting it fall.

Below, the sally force sat against the wall-foot, one beside another. No one spoke. Some wiped their blades; some counted their arrows; some tied and retied their sandal laces. Kamon walked among them, one circuit, one hand laid on one shoulder after another. When he had finished the rounds, he said:

”Remember all of you. When the gate opens — don’t look up at the sky, don’t look back at the city. Forward. Forward is the road of the living.”

He said it once, walking the line; he did not repeat it. The men did not answer — they only sat up a little straighter against the wall-foot, and the row of them ran black under the torches, two hundred men who had heard the same words and taken them each into his own chest.

He looked up at the sky. At the edge of it, a line of gray was already showing.

”Soon.” He said.

Kamon spent that day going nowhere.

He stayed in the south gate’s tunnel, and the tunnel became his workshop and his watch-post in one. In the tunnel, the fifty earth bags stood stacked in order — he had counted them twice in the morning, not because they could have moved, but because counting was a thing a man could do with his hands while his mind ran ahead. He polished his stone chisel, once, again — the edge already bright, the handle worn smooth by thirty years of his palm. Outside the tunnel mouth, the wind came in gusts, moving the dust of the city across the threshold. He drew his old sheepskin coat tighter and suddenly remembered — years ago, his first time going out to work with his master, on a night like this, squatting at a stranger’s wall-foot waiting for dawn. Back then he had been waiting for work. Now he was waiting for life and death.

”Master,” he said, low, ”everything you taught me — I’ve used it all. Tonight’s affair — let’s see if your apprentice can open this gate properly.”

The sentry in the tunnel heard him and did not dare speak; he only straightened his back.

In the distance, on the southern towers, the lights were small as bean flames. Kamon watched a while, then slid the chisel back into his belt, leaned against the earth bags, and closed his eyes.

He did not sleep. He only thought — four months ago, on a night like this, he had crept through the gap in the northeast corner with twelve men. Back then, he had been thinking of taking the city back. Now he sat in the south gate’s tunnel, thinking of how to lead men out.

”In, out.” He murmured. ”The city has taken us in, after all.”

He said it the way a man says a thing he has come to understand slowly — the city that had been a fortress to take, a place to seize back from the men who had stolen it, had become over four months a place that knew his name, that leaned its weight on his shoulder when the ram struck. The wall had taken them in the way a house takes in its people; and tomorrow he would walk out of it as its own.

All that day, the sky over the city was gray.

No sun, no wind. The cloud pressed low, like a quilt nobody had washed. At the market, people came out as usual — buying bread, carrying water — but the talk was less. Where heads came together, the whisperers broke apart at the sight of the patrol.

But the preparations never stopped. ℯ

The forty plank bridges were moved into the south gate’s tunnel by daylight, lined up against the wall. A-Ka led his men in checking every one again: were the planks level, did the four legs shake, were the wedges loose. When they reached the twelfth bridge, he had two young men lift it and walk a circuit inside the tunnel. ”The men carrying the bridges,” he said, ”must step together. Left leg, right leg — no fighting. A bridge off by a finger, and the man crossing the trench is off by a foot.”

The two young men walked the circuit twice more, their strides matched, the bridge level between them; only then did A-Ka nod and mark the twelfth bridge with chalk — the mark of a man who had been checked and passed.

The hospital’s stretchers were all in place — ten at the south gate, ten on the wall-head, ten kept at the hospital. Sister Wei led the women in testing the rope of every stretcher, pulling each strand. When the testing was done, she said: ”When you carry a man, keep your back straight and your steps short. A wounded man on a stretcher can’t take the jolting.”

She said it while squatting, testing the last rope with both hands, her weight on it — and the stretcher-bearers around her watched her hands the way men watch a craft they are learning, because in four months they had learned that Sister Wei’s hands were worth trusting.

Mery’s provisions were distributed from early morning. Two hundred oilcloth bundles, two each, tucked into shirts. Mery also had the two great jars behind the south gate filled with water — the men who came back from the fighting would need their first drink cold.

”A cold drink shakes a man awake.” Mery said.

Lu Zhu also walked the city by day.

He walked from the west gate to the east gate, from the north wall to the south wall. At every stretch he stopped a while. The people on the wall were more numerous than usual — guards, repairmen, carriers, each at their work. Seeing him come, they stopped and nodded. He nodded back.

When he reached the south gate, he saw Kamon still squatting in the tunnel. The two men did not speak; they simply squatted on opposite sides of the tunnel, each in his own place. After a long while, Kamon said: ”Everything is ready.”

”Ready.” Lu Zhu said.

”Tonight — where do you stand?”

”The tower.” Lu Zhu said. ”Watching them go out. Waiting for them to come back.”

”Then I stand in the tunnel.” Kamon said. ”The moment the gate opens — I’m the first one out.”

”How old are you?” Lu Zhu said.

”However old the stone is.” Kamon said. ”This wall knows me. I walk out — it won’t hold me back.”

Lu Zhu did not argue further. He knew arguing was useless. Four months — Kamon had repaired the wall four months and guarded the wall four months. Tomorrow night, he would walk out through the gate he had repaired himself.

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”You first, then. But remember — you go out to come back.”

He said it, and for a moment the two men looked at each other across the tunnel — the builder who had come to this country a stranger and the old mason who had spent his whole life in it, joined by four months of walls and wells and gates. Neither said more. There was nothing left to say that the work had not already said.

”Come back.” Kamon said. ”Come back with the whole city.”

In the Haven, Nefer gathered the children together. She said: ”Tonight, none of you go out. Sleep in the shelters. At first light, when the sun is up, I’ll come and call you.” A child asked: ”Auntie Nefer — is there going to be a battle?” Nefer said: ”Battle or no battle, the grown-ups are holding it up. Your work is to sleep. When you wake, the sky will be clear.”

The women’s hands did not stop all day either. The women of the Haven and the women of the city worked together, tearing old cloth into strips and rolling them into bundles — strips for the hospital, strips for the little station at the lane mouth. One woman said, rolling: ”My man is in the sally force.” The woman beside her said: ”Mine too.” The one beyond said: ”Mine is gone. Two months ago — grazed by an arrow.” And her hands did not stop as she said it. The rolled strips piled up in neat stacks.

”Roll them tight.” Nefer said. ”When a strip reaches a man’s body, it’s his second life.”

The women answered. The whole room was full of the sound of tearing cloth — ripping, ripping — like a hundred sighs pressed low in winter. Some of the women hummed as they worked, the old work-songs of the western line, half-remembered; the men of the sally force passing the door heard the sound and did not stop, but their steps were a little firmer for it.

At dusk, Lu Zhu went to the hospital.

Imset was giving the stretcher crews their last instructions. Seeing Lu Zhu, he dismissed the men, and the two stood in the empty yard. The lamp that never went out swayed gently in the wind.

”Tomorrow night,” Lu Zhu said, ”you stay here?”

”No.” Imset said. ”I stand at the south gate. The badly wounded pass my eyes first. Here — Shafi holds it.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”With you at the front, they dare to go forward.”

”The men who dare to go forward,” Imset said, ”don’t need me behind them. I stand at the front for the ones who don’t dare — so they dare too.” He paused. ”This city has held four months. Tomorrow night, it’s my turn to go to the front.”

”You are a healer.” Lu Zhu said.

”A healer who has gone to the front,” Imset said, ”is a healer at last.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He reached out and pressed his hand on Imset’s shoulder — a heavy press.

”Take care.” He said.

”Take care.” Imset said.

The two stood in the yard a while. In the distance, toward the south gate, the faint sounds of voices and shifting things came drifting — the last breathing of the city.

The bigger children did not sleep. They gathered together and whispered the half-sentences they had heard from the grown-ups — ”the south gate,” ”the third night,” ”the bridge by the trench” — the fragments passing from mouth to ear like pieces of a puzzle none of them had the picture of. Deep into the night, no one dared speak any more. One child pressed his grass cricket into another’s hand: ”Here. Tomorrow, if anyone isn’t here anymore, this cricket calls for him.” The other child tucked the cricket into his shirt: ”Everyone will be here. Everyone.”

The women gathered in the kitchen and soaked the next morning’s porridge grain. The sound of the soaking was soft. Someone said: ”Soak more. The men coming back tomorrow all want something hot.” No one answered, but every hand scooped an extra handful into the pot.

The city’s blacksmiths did not sleep that night. In the forge east of the city, the furnace glowed red. The adjutant had sent all the remaining iron of the city to the smithy. The old smith worked with his two apprentices, hammer ringing on hammer. They were not making blades — there were blades enough. They were making spades, crowbars, grappling hooks — the tools for the craftsmen’s company.

”This hook,” the old smith said, holding up one fresh from the forge, ”catch it on the camp palisade, ten men pull — the palisade goes over.”

”Master smith,” the adjutant said, ”after tomorrow night, you’re the first merit of breaking the camp.”

”Merit or no merit,” the old smith said, and he turned the hook over in his hand, the firelight running along the new steel, ”I’ve hammered iron all my life — this is the first time the things I make are for going outward. Every other blade and spade I’ve made has been for holding something — a door, a wall, a line. These are the first that go out the gate.”

He said it without sentiment, the way a smith states the temper of a piece of steel, and went back to the anvil; the hammer rose and fell, and the sparks flew out into the dark like the city’s own small stars.

In the lane by the south gate, the sally force still sat at the wall-foot.

Kamon walked past them, looking at face after face. Some he knew; some he did not. There was a half-grown lad, not much older than Shunzi, holding a sharpened wooden stave — and his hand was shaking.

”First time?” Kamon squatted down before him.

”F-f-first time.” The lad said.

”Everyone shakes the first time.” Kamon said. ”The first time I fought a man, my hands shook too. Shaking isn’t the fear. The fear is shaking until you throw your weapon away.” He laid his hand on the lad’s shoulder. ”Remember — the weapon in your hand is your life in your hand.”

The lad swallowed, and gripped the stave tight. It did not shake any more — not because the fear had left him, but because the shaking had found a place to stand: the hands firm around the wood, the fear held in the chest where the fists cannot shake it loose.

Kamon stood and walked on. At the lane mouth he looked back once. There was no moonlight, no starlight — only the wall-head torches, lighting the whole lane of men, the light falling on the shoulders and the heads and the tools laid across knees. Two hundred, not one missing — the count he had made in the morning, the count he made now, the count he would make again at the door.

”Fine men.” He said, low.

At dusk, A-Tu’s boat went out once more.

Not to carry a letter this time — to bring back the answer. Horenheb’s final reply was six characters: ”In place at the Zi hour. Move before dawn.”

Lu Zhu read it, and touched it to the lamp. The flame took the sheepskin, and the characters ”before dawn” burned bright for one instant.

”The signal,” he said to the adjutant, ”say it once more.”

”Three swings of the torch on the wall-head.” The adjutant said. ”My men watch the southern towers. When the towers answer with fire — General Horenheb is in place. Then we wait for his war horn.”

”When the horn sounds,” Lu Zhu said, ”open the gate.”

”Open the gate.” The adjutant repeated — and the two words, said back, had the weight of a vow. He said them again to himself as he walked to the wall-head, testing them the way a man tests the edge of a blade he is about to trust.

The night deepened, little by little.

The chief officiant’s night patrol did not patrol the city tonight — they patrolled the hearts of the people. He took two patrolmen from the south of the city to the north, walking all the way, watching the lamps of each household. Where a lamp went out early, he stood a little longer. Where a door stood ajar, he went up and latched it properly.

”The people of this city,” the chief officiant said, ”are all awake tonight. They are only pretending to sleep.”

”Then us?” A patrolman asked.

”We keep them company.” The chief officiant said. ”Keep the waking company, and wait for dawn.”

Near the south gate, the chief officiant met Lu Zhu coming out of the tunnel.

The two stood at the lane mouth, neither in a hurry to speak. The night wind passed between them, cold and thin.

”Tomorrow night,” the chief officiant spoke first, ”the moment the city’s gate opens, I stand at the old temple’s door. Waiting for your news.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said.

”And one thing more.” The chief officiant said. ”In the old temple, I will burn a fire of incense for you. Not for the gods — for the men who come back.” He paused, and when he spoke again his voice had the flatness of a man stating a fact he has paid for. ”I have been a priest half my life. This is the first time the incense is burned for people.”

”People are more real than gods.” Lu Zhu said.

”They are.” The chief officiant said. ”These four months, I have come to understand it. The gods cannot save a city; people can. The men who go out tomorrow night — they are the gods of this city.”

The two stood a while longer. In the distance, the lamps of the granary, the lamps of the hospital, the lamps of the Haven burned, one after another — as if holding up the whole night of the city.

”Tomorrow night,” Lu Zhu said, ”win or lose — the lamps of this city must go on burning.”

”They will go on burning.” The chief officiant said.

Just past the Zi hour, the torches on the wall-head doubled, one after another — the light running along the wall like a wave, the new torches flaring up in the wind, doubling the line of fire that the city had shown to the river for four months.

That was for the south to see. On the ten towers, the answering lights went up quickly — three torches, not one missing, held high over the dark slope, burning steady against the wind.

”They’re in place.” Lu Zhu stood on the south gate’s tower and said, low. ”Everyone is in place.”

Below, the two hundred of the sally force were all in position — squatting against the wall-foot, on both sides of the tunnel, two black rows that had not moved in a long time. No one spoke; the only sound was the wind and the small shifts of a man settling his weight. Some drew their blades and wiped them with a sleeve — the wipe of a man who has already wiped it three times and wipes it again because the hand needs the work; some made a final tightening of their sandal laces; some raised their heads and looked at the figure on the tower — the man who had brought them here, the man they would follow out.

On the tower, Lu Zhu did not come down. He rested his hand on the crenellation and looked south. The wind cast his shadow on the wall, moving, moving — like a banner standing on the wall-head.

Kamon came up from the tunnel and stood beside him.

”What watch is it?” Lu Zhu asked.

”The fourth watch.” Kamon said. ”One more hour — and it will be light.”

”Afraid?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Afraid.” Kamon said. He paused. ”The same as the night you asked me, four months ago — still afraid. Not of how many are out there. Afraid of whether we ourselves have done everything that needed doing.”

”It’s all done.” Lu Zhu said. ”The wall. The gate. The bridges. The grain. The medicine. The men. Nothing left undone.”

He listed them the way a foreman lists the parts of a building at the end of a workday — each item a thing he could put his hand on, a thing that had been measured and set and checked. It was the old habit of a lifetime of building, and it served him now the way it had served him through every crisis of four months: when the fear came, count the work.

”Then good.” Kamon said. ”Done — and the rest is left to the light.”

The two said no more. The night lay before them, without edge or end. The campfires outside the city, the tower lights south of the city, the wall-head torches — all the light was waiting for one hour. And that hour was coming toward the city, step by step.

In the hospital, the lamps burned. Imset’s stretcher crews sat in the empty yard, one cup of warm water each. Shafi made the last inventory of the medicine chest, item by item.

In the courtyard behind the official granary, Mery’s lamp burned too. He went through the three ledgers from first page to last, once more — his finger moving down each column, the figures passing under his eyes the way a sentry’s post passes under a sentry’s eyes on a long night. When he had finished, he put the counting-rods away one by one, neatly, each in its place in the box, the way a soldier stands his spear in the rack. Then he picked up the old chest that had once held the records — the chest Tia had used when she left the transcribed table of contents behind — and wiped it clean with his sleeve. ”Everything that could be left in the city has been left in the city,” he said, low. ”What cannot be left — that depends on tonight.”

In the Haven, Nefer had not slept. She went from shelter to shelter, pushing gently at every door — the doors that had been latched from inside, the doors that stood ajar for the children who slept by the hearth; each one she closed softly, the way a mother closes a door without waking the sleeper. When the rounds were done, she stood in the middle of the shelter ground and looked toward the south gate. The sky there was heavy and black, and the weight of it seemed to press down on the roofs. She could hear her own heartbeat — one, two — falling in with the faint footsteps in the distance.

The chief officiant stood at the old temple’s door, looking toward the south gate. Behind him, the eternal lamps cast his shadow long along the temple wall — the shadow of a man who had once stood in this doorway as a prisoner, and now stood in it as a keeper of the city’s night.

The old temple’s door was not closed tonight. In the hall, more eternal lamps burned than on any night before. In the incense burner, a fresh fire of incense rose in thin coils — not for the gods. It was lit by the chief officiant’s own hand, for the men who would go out tomorrow.

”Half my life,” the chief officiant said, low, and his eyes were on the rising smoke of the incense, ”I watched incense for the gods in this temple — watched it rise and fall, morning and evening, and never once thought of the hands that had carried it in. Tonight, this incense burns for people.” He straightened his ceremonial robe — the robe he had worn for the rituals of a hundred years’ tradition, now worn for the men of one night. ”Tomorrow — god or spirit, ghost or man — all of you, open your eyes and look: are the lives of this city worth raising up again?”

The wind passed over the temple eaves, and the eternal lamps swayed together. The light of the whole hall moved — like the surface of a lake, touched once by a hand.

And on the slope beyond the city, Horenheb had put on his armor too. Fifteen hundred men stood in ranks behind him. The sound of blades leaving their sheaths ran through the dark, like a low wind.

”Wait for the horn.” He said.

He said it without turning — the two words for the whole column of men behind him, the words they had been waiting four months to hear. His hand rested on the saddle’s pommel, steady; the horse stood still under him, schooled to silence, the cloth still muffling its hooves.

”Wait for the horn.” Behind him, fifteen hundred voices, held so low they seemed to rise out of the ground itself. The sound sank into the wind — and even the wind paused a moment.

The night reached its deepest point.

No moon. No stars. Only the wind from the north, gust after gust — as if countless hands were gently patting the edges of the city and the camp, the men and their blades.

Below the slope south of the city, the fifteen hundred had already merged into the dark. The horses’ hooves were wrapped in cloth; the blades were back in their sheaths. Horenheb sat on his horse and looked up at the city one last time. The wall-head torches ran like a quiet river.

Inside the city, behind the south gate, two hundred men held their breath — the breath of two hundred men in a tunnel, the air moving in and out in the shallow rhythm of men who have been trained not to waste it. In the tunnel, Kamon’s hand rested on the new gate bar. The bar was cold — cold with the night wind, the iron drawing the cold out of the dark. He did not move. He was waiting.

Waiting for the three swings of the torch on the wall-head. Waiting for the war horn from the south. Waiting for the instant when four months came to their end.

Everything that could be done had been done — the counted bridges, the stacked bags, the filled jars, the sharpened blades, the trimmed wicks, the lamps burning. What remained was the waiting; and the waiting was the hardest work of all, because it was the only work that had no measurements.

The wind went on blowing — the north wind of four months, the wind that had carried the smoke of the city’s fires and the sound of its drums down the river, the wind that had worn the banners and the men. It went on blowing, as if it would blow through everything, as if nothing that happened in one night could change its mind about the world.

At the edge of the sky, the thick bank of cloud split along one fine crack. Through the crack came a thread of green-gray light — so faint it was almost invisible, the light of a dawn not yet born. But every waking eye saw it — the wall-head, the tower, the tent, the tunnel: all the waking eyes of the city and the camp saw it at once, the way men see the first crack of light in a house that has been dark all night.

Dawn was one hour away.
