Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 60: Chapter 9: Trade Routes Connect — New Supply Sources Established

The first shipment of new medicines officially dispatched to Akhetaten did not come from Thebes. It did not come from Punt either. It came from a small ferry landing on the Nubian border, brought by an old Nubian boatman who made his living delivering goods to the merchant fleets that served the river towns. He had taken a circuitous route through the western channels, hauling his boat step by step along the shallow stretches of the river. Although this old boatman was not himself a direct enforcer of High Priest Nekhem’s blockade order, he had heard from his fellow boatmen that any delivery to Akhetaten risked having the boat seized without warning, or the cargo confiscated. So he chose to avoid the Thebes checkpoints entirely.

The boat came in to shore at night. The tide was low in the deep hours, and at this stretch of the Akhetaten landing, low tide exposed a short reef column covered in slick green moss. Ordinarily, during the day, boatmen would steer clear of this reef and dock at the deeper berth on the south side. But the old boatman did not bring his boat into the deep water — he ran the bow’s keel straight onto the wet sand just north of the reef and did not push any further. This way, he could unload more quickly and get back to his boat sooner, avoiding any night patrols that might appear on the water. He jumped down from the boat, his canvas soles collecting a handful of wet sand. After he stood up, he wiped the sand off on his trousers, then gave a low report to the old boat captain on duty at the landing’s guard shed: ”Medicine. Four sacks in total — two bundles of dried mint, two bundles of dried plantain. All from the south. Never touched the Thebes route. Never passed through any Thebes landing. Night delivery is easier — fewer people during the day.” The old captain set his water pipe on the stone step and checked the cargo by touch with his knuckles — the dried mint was drier and thinner than the batch that had come from Thebes two months earlier, the leaves uneven in size, but not soft, and there was no mildew near the roots. His knuckles had been soaked in river water for most of his life, and his sense of touch was different from other people’s — he could tell by the surface temperature whether the cargo had been damp in the hold.

Shafi had come running the moment she heard the boat at the landing. She carried an oil lamp in her hand — the lamp oil was running low, the flame flickering wildly — but she did not trim the wick. Whenever she was in a hurry, she never trimmed the wick, because trimming required stopping, steadying the lamp with both hands, and slowly lifting the wick with a thin bronze rod. Her attention was fixed on her ears, listening only for the sound of the boat’s mooring line falling on the stone steps. Before she even reached the landing, she heard the heavy thud of the rope hitting the stone — that sound meant a fully loaded boat. An empty boat’s rope would have landed with a light swish. By the time she reached the edge of the steps, she raised her lamp a little higher and confirmed that the hemp twine binding the sacks was tied in the Nubian style — two loops, a square knot, and the tail end worked into a hooked lock. She had seen this knot before, back when Sebek had shown her — in the temporary work sheds on the Nubian riverbank, where several batches of similar medicines had been tied the same way. There was no inscribed tag or seal inside the medicine sacks — only a single sheet of rough papyrus that read ”Urgent for the North.” She did not bring the sacks straight into storage. First, she had to open all of them and feel through each one, item by item, on the ground. When she reached the third sack, the top layer of dried mint leaves had softened slightly from the dampness of the sea voyage, but when she dug down to the middle layer, those leaves were dry — two or three sunny days would restore at least sixty percent of their volatile oils. She recorded all these internal conditions one by one on the receiving ledger, using a very fine charcoal tip to mark down, for every sack, the batch number, origin, surface moisture condition, the dryness level of the middle layer, and the estimated usable duration — all on a single table. No annotation was missing from the table: any leaf that had softened on the surface was marked ”First Sorting” — to be laid out in the drying shed and aired, with the drying time calculated against the humidity readings to restore maximum efficacy. The dry core layer, on the other hand, was marked ”Ready for Shelving” — these two batches were numbered separately: 001‑S (surface batch) and 001‑D (core batch).

The next morning at first light, she called three medicine boys and had them move all the new Nubian medicine sacks into the drying shed behind the main hall pharmacy for sorting. They stretched mesh screens over several peeled willow rods and spread each damp leaf flat — never stacking, because stacking would trap moisture and cause mildew underneath. The medicine boys had dried mint before, but this time Shafi added a new rule: after every third leaf, place a rubbed‑dry reed stalk between the rows — the stalk would allow air to circulate through the gaps so that moisture wouldn’t get trapped in the middle. One of the medicine boys thought this slowed down the process and gestured with his hands: ”Without the reed stalks, we could probably dry them faster.” Shafi looked at him and pressed one of the reed stalks flat against the edge of the wet leaf he was spreading, pressing as she spoke: ”The patients we treat now are not well‑fed children. They are people whose triple burner has destabilized from weakness, whose backs are already cold to the touch. Three leaves won’t save a single person. But one spoiled leaf is enough to make a person vomit and have diarrhoea until they die. This batch — if dried well, it can last six days. If dried poorly, it turns to dust. Do you want to dry it a little slower, or do you want to make a mistake and have to start all over?” After she finished speaking, she picked up another reed stalk, rubbed off the rough barbs at its nodes, and corrected a leaf‑overlap issue he had missed. The medicine boy said nothing more. He picked up another reed stalk, placed it where she had indicated, used the width of his own little finger as a spacing standard, and began laying the leaves one by one onto the mesh screen.

That same morning, another batch of dried herbs arrived from the north — brought by a caravan that had come overland from north of the Nubian border, skirting the Thebes restricted zone entirely. The leader of the caravan was a short, stocky man who had once sold fence‑post cedar in the old district of Thebes; he had been running goods with Nubian cotton merchants for years, and he had seven donkeys and two camels in his train. He tied his donkeys to the stone steps of the landing, and while unloading the cargo, he wiped the sweat from his forehead with a dirty cloth, muttering constantly: ”Hot, so hot.” The dried yarrow he brought was of better quality than the previous batch — the leaves were more intact, and their oil content was much higher than the Thebes goods Shafi had seen before; when she rubbed a leaf between her fingers, the sharp, astringent scent was unmistakable and strong. This time Shafi did not move the sacks herself — she had two young runners roll all the sacks to the ground just outside the pharmacy door, and then used a dry broom to sweep the sand off the sacks. As she swept, she taught them: ”When you sweep, don’t raise the broom head — if you lift it, the sand will fly into the medicine sacks. Keep the bristles flat against the ground and push outward. Push the sand to the corner, then gather it by hand into the waste basket — and wash your hands thoroughly before touching the herbs. Never touch a flower petal with fingers that have just handled dried animal dung.” The broom was her own making — a short handle of tied reed flowers, no wooden grip, a little rough on the palm, but the force was just right.

Two days later, Meru returned. This time he brought no medicine sacks. His face was sunburned and peeling, and there was a fresh scar on his forehead — not from a blade, but from falling off a camel. What he brought back were several small leather sheets, on which he had drawn the medicine transport routes from three different Nubian landings to Akhetaten — every route carefully marked with the number of days by boat, the navigable windows, the points where fresh water could be replenished, the safe stopping points, and the name of the contact person at each stop. These three routes were completely separate from one another and did not pass through any Thebes medicine‑transfer stations. One of the routes — a northern detour — cut through a stretch of white sand flats. The white sand flats had no water source, but there was a narrow dry riverbed that could be crossed in the dry season, saving two days compared to the original route.

”From now on, we don’t have to ship through Thebes. There are fewer local boats at low cost, but they can avoid the deep main channel — as long as we stay clear of the tributaries where patrol boats used to board us near the Thebes border. It’s better to take the half‑day detour through the white sand flats. Test each route once. Once they’re proven, set a fixed shipping schedule.” When he said this to Lu Zhu, he was also using small stones on the ground to lay out a triangular channel map: one route followed the western tributary, bypassing the main channel and coming ashore on the southern shallows at Akhetaten; one route went overland across the sand dunes, cutting the overland journey by half; the last — and the one he knew best — was a combined water‑and‑overland route: by boat in the rainy season, by camel in the dry season. The triangle formed by the stones had its base at Nubia and its apex at Akhetaten, but of the triangle’s three sides — two had been marked with crosses because the Thebes blockade had sealed them off, and the three new routes were marked with dashed lines of stones beside them.

Lu Zhu transferred the map onto a leather sheet, then took out an old ink brush from the bottom of his carpenter’s box — a brush he had once used to mark the mortise lines on roof beams — and assigned numbers to the three new routes: Route A — the western channel, all water route, suitable for summer flood‑season shipping; Route B — the white‑sand overland route, usable in winter and spring; Route C — the small‑landing detour, suitable for small, high‑frequency replenishment. After numbering them, he wrote a note at the bottom of the leather sheet: ”Route surveyor: Meru. First test run successful. Medicine supply expected to be stable on both lines. Backup routes to be re‑surveyed next month.” He pinned this leather sheet to the main hall’s north wall with three wooden pegs, positioned just a palm’s width away from Shafi’s pharmacy inventory table. After these three lines were pinned up, Imset happened to return from his rounds at the southern branch hall. He stood before the north wall and studied the route map for a full quarter‑watch. ”These places,” he said slowly, ”used to have medicine merchants who would deliver goods all the way to Punt and then sell them beyond Akhetaten.” As he spoke, he extended his index finger and tapped beside each transfer point, one by one. The gesture was like saying: these points will not just be medicine routes in the future — they will be extensions of medical resources, every single one of them a potential base for remote‑area mobile clinics.

”This overland route — the white sand flats — there is a family near that oasis who used to collect plantain for the Thebes market.” Shafi glanced at the marked point on Route B, flipped through her records — the notes she had kept from encounters with scattered gatherers at the old Thebes market — and pointed to the location of the oasis at the southeast corner of the white sand flats. She wrote the name of the oasis in charcoal at the tail end of Route B: ”Priority contact point. Supplies wild plantain and dried mint. Harvest window: three months during the dry season.”

Early the next morning, Lu Zhu traced the three new routes again onto a flat plank of peeled cypress wood. He outlined them with an ink brush, thickening every freshwater replenishment zone and every river‑mouth restricted area that needed to be avoided by Thebes patrol boats. Someone nearby asked: ”The white‑sand overland route can’t be used in summer — should we prepare a water‑carrying camel? In the summer heat, the water you carry across the sand will evaporate by midday.” Lu Zhu did not look up. He scraped the outside face of the cypress plank with a plane — taking off a thin layer of wood fibre to let the ink penetrate deeper — ”Later, I’ll send a sketch of an old‑brick water cistern out to the white sand flats, so the gatherer can build one in the deep sand. The cistern walls will be built with the same method as the official granary — brick cavities filled with river sand and crushed ash, with a hollow insulating layer in the middle to block heat transfer from the outer surface to the inner wall.”

Not long after the route map was finalized, that afternoon, the pharmacy door bolt of the riverbank branch hall was pulled for the first time.

The riverbank branch hall’s construction was led by Kamon, with foundation and walls built to the main hall’s standards, but the pharmacy intake process suddenly became a coordination hub because four different batches of medicine from four different sources arrived at the same time. Shafi temporarily sent one of the medicine boys over to handle intake registration — until the riverbank branch hall had a permanent pharmacy keeper assigned, it had none, and Shafi only came occasionally to check the accounts. This medicine boy had only started learning to read three months earlier; his current vocabulary could barely identify the thirty‑odd basic herb names Shafi had taught him — but he could match cargo items against the numbered tags and check quantities against the leather sheets. That day, four shipments arrived at the landing simultaneously — Nubian dried mint, Punt licorice residue, white‑sand dried yarrow, and northern overland dried dates — while the riverbank branch hall was still at the stage where the foundation had just been capped, the construction schedule was extremely tight, and the storage racks had not yet been moved in. The medicine sacks could only be piled temporarily in a corner of the half‑finished pharmacist’s room, its window opening still covered with a canvas tarp. To prevent the stacks from trapping moisture, Shafi had brought over a discarded wooden crate from the main hall earlier, and had the medicine boy layer all the herbs inside the crate — a layer of reed stalks at the bottom, two layers of dry grass paper, and a thin piece of lime block pressed on top. This was the temporary storage method she had worked out during Meru’s second replenishment run. That afternoon, four shipments arrived at the same time, and the quantity of medicine far exceeded the single wooden crate the pharmacy had available. The medicine boy lay flat on the crate and first marked every surface damp spot on the leather sheet beneath the crate’s lid. After sorting the first batch, he found a piece of old canvas folded into a makeshift cushion in the corner of the work shed — he moved half of the Nubian mint to the driest patch of sand, farthest from the wall and directly under the ventilation opening, and spread it flat there. As he moved the mint, some broken leaves scattered from the edges; he quickly bent down and picked them up one by one, stacking them into a row about half a finger wide. His movements were hurried — the coarse fabric of the canvas had rubbed small red marks into his fingertips — but he did not stop. He remembered clearly the standard Shafi had spoken so plainly during that drying session: ”One spoiled leaf is enough to make a person vomit and have diarrhoea until they die.” While he crouched to pick up the broken leaves, his partner carrying the medicine sacks ran past and accidentally kicked a wooden peg lying in the sand; the peg rolled outward — the medicine boy looked up, called the foot to a halt, reinserted the peg into the sand, and stomped it down with his toes. He did not have time to look up and see who it was. The branch hall’s pharmacy stock alert line had been breached for the first time since the southern branch opened — and at this moment, he was the one guarding the door.

That same night, Kamon walked over from the southern branch’s finishing worksite and added a second bolt slot and a spare bolt core to the riverbank branch hall. After waxing the slot, he crouched in front of the discarded wooden crate and read the line the medicine boy had written in the margin of the leather sheet — ”Estimated days of supply remaining: four” — several times over. Then he placed the spare core in an empty brick niche on the side of the door, hidden behind a wind‑blocking canvas, and hung a newly carved wooden tag above it: ”Spare bolt — for emergency use only.”

On the eighth day after the northern branch hall broke ground, a barley farmer from the northwestern valley and his wife pushed a creaking wooden cart to a halt just outside the lime line at the northern branch hall’s rammed‑earth foundation. On the cart were two large sacks of plump barley grains — the mouths of the sacks tightly sewn with coarse hemp thread, not a single grain spilling out. This barley was an early‑ripening variety unique to the northwestern valley, smaller than the local Akhetaten strain but heavier — a handful poured into the palm had a noticeable weight, each grain solid and dense. The farmer’s wife, as she unloaded the barley, wiped the sweat from her forehead again and again with a coarse cloth. She handed a very thin leather sheet to Nefer. The sheet had been placed in a dry‑grass compartment inside the cloth bag, without a single crease. On it was written: ”We don’t want money for the medicine. We just want to cure my mother’s chronic headache. She hasn’t been able to lie down for weeks — every time she lies down, her head feels like it’s sinking into the ground. She can only doze sitting by the hearth, and only when the flame flickers in the ash does she close her eyes.” That day, Nefer prescribed dried yarrow for her — and on the branch hall’s intake ledger, she entered the barley’s name, weight, and estimated value in the ”Barter Registration” column. This was the first non‑monetary exchange recorded since the Akhetaten healing hall’s branch halls had implemented the ”goods‑for‑treatment” provisional system.

She pinned this registration leather sheet to the branch hall’s exterior wall — at the same height as the medicine‑price announcement sheet pinned to the beam of the main hall’s north wall. A mother who had come from the southern district with her child for a follow‑up visit sat under the waiting shelter and heard her neighbours murmuring in praise of the new rule. She set her sleeping child down on her own dry‑cloth tunic and glanced toward the medicine counter. She did not crowd around the registration sheet like the others. Instead, she reached into her basket, broke off a piece of flatbread for her waking child — and then placed her own small gourd of sweet‑beet‑root steeped water beside the branch hall’s communal water jar, saying quietly: ”We don’t have anything extra. But this water is for drinking. A branch hall — water is also shared here.”

As the branch‑hall network gradually expanded with each new batch of medicines and the barter system, the shortage of personnel became increasingly apparent. The healing hall’s original treatment team — built around the wandering physicians Sebek and He Lu — could no longer support the daily outpatient clinics and night patrols at both the southern and northern branch halls. He Lu counted the number of people currently able to write prescriptions independently at each site — three at the main hall, two at the southern branch, three at the northern branch, and one at the riverbank branch — fewer than ten in total. According to the branch hall plans, each branch needed at least two physicians capable of independent night‑shift prescribing. The shortage was at least two people. He Lu found the names of two men he had rejected in Thebes three months earlier, recorded on a leather sheet on the north wall — one because he was too timid to handle emergencies alone; the other, a bone‑setter who had been unable to travel long distances because of a leg injury. He Lu chewed a piece of flatbread as he wrote his letters. The letters were very short — just a few lines: ”Akhetaten has built a new healing hall. We need physicians now. You can bring the leftover medicine you had in Thebes. Travel expenses will be covered from the public fund.” He added no embellishment — just rolled the letters into small rolls of coarse hemp paper and slipped them into the leather robe of a livestock trader heading to Thebes to sell old boat planks, asking him to deliver them. After sending them off, he brushed the crumbs from his hands and went back to the southern branch to splint a river worker’s fractured arm.

Three days later, the southern branch hall officially opened for consultations — on the twelfth day after the line Shafi had drawn on the inventory estimate sheet. She stood outside the branch hall door, recited that line and the baseline that accompanied it, then carried a stack of pharmacy inventory registration sheets from the main hall to the branch hall in one hand, and the southern branch’s intake tally sheet in the other. Behind her, the low shrubs on the dry sand shifted in the valley breeze, rising and falling in a continuous pattern of light and shadow.

The southern branch’s pharmacy registration numbers began with S001. The ”S” was the code Shafi had assigned when she had set the branch‑hall numbering rule on the north wall — S for south, N for north, R for riverbank. She filled in S001 in the first column of the southern branch’s intake sheet, and then entered the first allocation of medicines transferred from the main hall — dried mint, dried yarrow, fresh reed‑root substitute — one by one according to the numbering rule. After the registration was complete, she stood under the small pharmacy shelter outside the branch hall and took out a prepared plank of dried cypress wood. With charcoal, she drew up the daily consumption and replenishment schedule for the three branch halls: the southern branch consumed mint fastest — because it was closest to the riverbank, with fewer wells, and the number of children with fever and diarrhoea was high — requiring replenishment from the main hall every four to five days. The northern branch’s biggest demand was for gynaecological medicines and paediatric fever remedies — replenishment every six days. The riverbank branch, treating mostly acute emergencies from outside the area, had highly variable consumption and was scheduled for emergency‑only resupply.

The stock shortage she had faced when the three branch hall foundations were first broken — now, with dried mint, dried yarrow, dried dates, and other core medicines arriving simultaneously from Nubia, Punt, and the white sand flats, the temporary ”mild cases reduced” line that had been imposed during the shortage had returned to full dispensing quotas. By this point, the main hall and all branch halls had restored their medicine distribution to the pre‑blockade standard ratios — no more fresh‑herb substitutes for dried products, no more daily dispensing limits. That afternoon, when she finished reading the return‑visit statistics sent back from the various branch halls, she did not express any surprise — she simply added a numbered note at the bottom of the tally sheet: ”To date, combined single‑hall and branch‑hall consultations: over seven hundred patient visits.” She wrote ”over seven hundred patient visits” — this number was slightly lower than her earlier projections, because the branch halls had only just opened and the statistics for follow‑ups and new cases had not yet been fully captured, but the trend was clear. She knew in her heart that once the branch halls were fully operational, this number would double quickly. She filed the tally sheet at the pharmacy entrance and continued her rounds, checking each branch hall’s inventory.

That same afternoon, Meru brought in a second permanent medicine merchant — a Nubian medicine trader in his mid‑forties who had once managed warehouse storage for a foreign trade guild at the Memphis harbour. He sat sideways on a low stone beside the kiln ash at the landing, asked Lu Zhu for a bowl of cool water, took one sip, then another, and said: ”I’ve only ever seen cargo unloaded at official granaries. I’ve never seen a medical hall manage its pharmacy this way — just now, a young boy used a dried reed stalk to verify four different medicinal items.” He was referring to what he had seen at the northern branch hall at midday: the medicine boy Shafi had sent over — the one who could recognize fewer than thirty herb names — was crouching beneath the newly built pharmacy shelves, using a prepared dried reed stalk to check the drying level of plantain — the stalk‑length ratio was exactly one and a half, the leaf spacing just right, no overlapping. The merchant said he was going back to Nubia, to combine the ”Akhetaten healing hall pharmacy management method” with the warehouse experience he had accumulated over half a lifetime — the kind of warehouse with mud‑brick walls, where water seeped through the surface and night winds blew sand through the gaps in the door planks — to convert his own earth‑storehouse into a similar compartmentalized system. He also said that from now on, for every batch of medicine he shipped, he would prepare a ”supply manifest” in a format similar to the one Shafi used — with date, origin, harvest season, dryness level, and estimated usable period all written down. This method was foreign to him — he had spent most of his life doing business on verbal trust and verbal appraisal. Now, he wanted to place the medicines he trusted within a mature pharmacy system. Meru listened to him rambling on about warehouse wall cracks without interrupting a single time. He just set the bowl of cool boiled water on the ash slope, placing it on a worn, polished piece of lime brick. The water’s surface shivered faintly with the ripples from a distant boat’s wake, but not a drop spilled over the rim.

On the day before the northern branch hall opened, Imset walked all day between the southern and northern branch halls. First, behind the southern branch’s pharmacy, he helped Sebek adjust several ancient formulas for diabetes and chronic enteritis — formulas that had never been standardized in Thebes because the herbs listed in the old canons could not all be found in the southern district. But Sebek had discovered that this type of wasting‑thirst syndrome was not uncommon among patients who lacked a light diet and had been drinking river water for years. Imset helped him revise the substitution plan — using locally available purslane in place of the long‑distance aloe that would have had to be purchased from Memphis — and wrote the purslane’s harvest season, drying time, and combination recommendations on a very short note, which he stuck to the wooden frame beside Sebek’s consultation table with wet clay. At the bottom of the note was another line: ”Before each daily dose, re‑check the tongue and pulse. In early‑stage diabetes, the tongue is often red with little coating, and the pulse is thin and rapid.” After he left, Sebek added his own annotation below the note: ”If the gums bleed repeatedly, stop chewing licorice root and switch to fresh reed‑root strips — this method reduces the likelihood of capillary dilation and bleeding in the gums; excessive sweet compounds in saliva can cause mucosal dryness and capillary fragility.”

That afternoon, Imset walked to the northern branch hall. Nefer, who was doing trial consultations, had just taken in a woman with a high fever who had been carried down from the weaving workshop — postpartum, with retained placental fragments, showing early signs of sepsis: persistent high fever, sudden cessation of lochia, abdominal rigidity with rebound tenderness. Nefer’s hands had already moved from the splint box — she placed two wooden splints wrapped in white cotton flat against the woman’s abdomen, not for blood‑drawing or drainage, but to keep the abdominal muscles protected from prolonged direct pressure during the high fever, using well‑water‑moistened cloths to cool the surface. Assisting her with the delivery support was the eldest woman on Nefer’s women’s surplus‑grain distribution team — a woman who had been delivering babies since she was a girl, who could identify fetal positions by touch and distinguish between stringy and clotted blood loss. She said nothing, just knelt in place to help Nefer adjust the patient’s pelvic tilt, using the inside of her wrist to cushion the patient’s lower back against convulsions. The ground beneath her knees was a freshly levelled layer of coarse sand; after kneeling for half a watch, the grit had left tiny pinpoint abrasions on her knees — she did not get up. Several basins of cold water were placed in turn at her feet, their rims ringed with a pale alkaline residue — lime waste left over from the foundation work that had been dissolved in the water. She held the patient’s middle finger with one hand to monitor the pulse, and with the other she squeezed out a fresh well‑water cloth. Her lips never changed shape from beginning to end. Nefer tried three different antibacterial formulas before the infection stabilized — dried yarrow only reduced the surface fever, but the septic focus was still spreading in the abdominal cavity; so she switched to a large dose of fresh purslane pounded into juice for external application, combined with a small amount of licorice root to protect the stomach. When this combination still could not break the persistent fever, she changed the plan one last time — using a concentrated decoction of dried arborvitae leaf with a small amount of licorice root as an enema, to clear internal heat and suppress suppuration. The entire treatment sequence — from preparing the medicine, to external cooling with wet cloths, to the enema, to stabilizing blood pressure — continued until the patient could begin to take small sips of water, her temperature steadily declined, and the pulse in her middle finger returned to a normal‑but‑slightly‑rapid strength.

That evening, a rainstorm came. The rain fell suddenly — slate‑grey clouds rolled in from the valley mouth, and in an instant they had covered the sky above the brick‑drying yard. The kiln dust that had been floating around the shed roofs was suddenly driven down by the cold wind, and the air filled with the wet smell of riverbed mud. The rope knots on the brick sheds, the work sheds, and the branch halls’ reed mats tightened in the wind — every double figure‑eight knot, every timber hitch that had been tied into the rope loops, now stretched under the strain. Among those knots were the extra cinch knots that the night‑patrol physicians habitually added when they closed the pharmacy door — knots tied with the tail end facing inward, so the wind would not loosen them. There were the hemp ropes the boatmen had tied to the discarded mast at the landing — loop hitches learned from the water‑country methods of the Thebes drainage channels, knots that did not slip when wet. Shafi, as she re‑sorted the incoming registration sheets in the evening, watched the downpour outside washing over the wet sand road — the fine rills on the sand road only seeped downhill, never spreading upward over the ash slope. This coarse‑ash slope was a rainwater‑collection strip that had been built during the last branch‑hall road‑grading inspection, using crushed‑stone scrap mixed with river sand and lime powder, with a crushed‑stone bedding layer along the edge; the water took just long enough to drain through the gaps to reach the outside of the embankment.

These knots and stone edges were not perfect — a length of old hemp rope had been chewed by a donkey three years ago, and the chewed section, rough and frayed, took the first strain in the wind and snapped first; after it broke, it hung limply at mid‑mast, beaten by the rain. Outside the ash slope, a low stone had not been seated firmly enough, and the water flow had undercut its base slightly; it would need to be backfilled with a shovel the next day — but almost every knot that had been carefully secured made it through the night. The rainwater continued to drain slowly toward the shallow ditches outside the embankment through the rest of the night.

The boatman’s child came for a follow‑up visit on the morning of the northern branch hall’s opening day. Sebek remembered the child’s case number clearly — P‑016, one of the first acute cases treated with the fresh reed‑root substitution protocol at the main hall. The child, gently rocked in his father’s arms, woke up — and then, with damp eyes, looked toward the reed‑mat door curtain. The wind blew a gap in the curtain, and a shaft of light fell through the opening, illuminating the back of the child’s hand — the vein that had been so prominent from dehydration was now less swollen. Sebek pressed the back of his hand against the child’s forehead — the temperature was much steadier than on the night he had first come seeking medicine. He did not rush to write a prescription. Instead, he bent down, and with the same hand that had held a mallet, he took the child’s fingers one by one, feeling the skin temperature, then pinching the pads of the fingers — full, not soft. Then he felt the wrist — the pulse rate, for this child’s age, was at the upper end of normal but stable and converging. The child did not cry. He just blinked once. The father leaned against the doorframe, a patch of wet mud on his knee — not yet dry, from the walk along the gravel road after the rain. He had not brought his carrying pole this time. His hands were empty, and he wore only an old cloth tunic patched in three or four places. His lips moved, but no sound came out — he had never been comfortable saying thank you in his life. But he shifted the child’s hand halfway from his own palm toward Sebek’s, and when Sebek took it, he did not pull back. He pushed the remaining part of the wrist forward a little — as if passing the small warmth in his palm to him. Sebek looked down at their hands — the boatman’s hands were covered in old rope scars, the child’s palm still showing the slight peeling left over from dehydration. Both rough, both warm.

Outside the consultation area, the northern branch hall’s registration sheet had already been hung; the southern branch hall’s pharmacy bolt had been opened for the scheduled midday replenishment; the riverbank branch hall’s final layer of moisture‑proof mud plaster had been applied to the fourth course of bricks. The daily data from all branch halls had been consolidated into Shafi’s pharmacy classification ledger through the regular return of registration sheets from each site. She checked each branch hall’s low‑stock alert threshold against the usage status of the two newly arrived batches of dried mint and dried yarrow from Nubia — she moved the remaining Thebes dried mint from the northern branch shelf to the emergency reserve box, clearly labelled for priority consumption, and no longer mixed it with the new arrivals.

That afternoon, on the main hall’s north wall, among the route maps pinned under wooden pegs, the inventory tables, and the branch‑hall allocation sheets, a small empty space had appeared — and into that space, Meru hammered a freshly cut strip of cypress wood, inscribed with the four directional codes, the identifiers of each new route, and the contact names and regular cargo docks he would bring back on his next test run of the medicine route in three days’ time. After hammering it in, he stood and looked at the wall for a moment, wiped a smear of ink from his right thumb with his sleeve, and then folded the contact note from the old Nubian boatman who had come all the way from the Nubian landing and tucked it into the gap between the wooden wedge and the wall. The wedge had already been driven in tight — the paper met resistance when he pushed it in, and after getting it halfway in, he used his finger to press the paper the rest of the way until it was pinched tight, unable to be pulled out. This way, even while he was away, if any branch‑hall pharmacy keeper needed to urgently contact the boat captain on this emergency water‑route supply line, all they had to do was pull this wedge to find the contact — a silent clue, nothing more than a slip of paper.

(End of Chapter 9)
