Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 64: Chapter 13: Medical Fame Spreads Far — The Shadow of War Approaches

The first to notice the new arrivals was a ferryman.

The way he noticed was simple: for ten straight days, every boat that came across the river from the east bank carried someone who was not from Akhetaten. The passengers did not look like laborers — they were too thin, their faces too hollowed, the clothes on their backs too worn. The ferryman had seen them clearly — he stood at the bow, working the steering oar, his hands on the tiller, his eyes sweeping the deck as he crossed. In a single ten-day span, the east-bank boats brought more than just cargo. There were women carrying children, men carrying stretchers, families carrying the dead and the nearly dead. None of these people got off at the quarry intake or the weaving workshop. Every one of them, without exception, was pointed toward the healing hall. ”The medical hall — the one on the riverbank, the one by the ferry crossing, the one in the old city — the one that treats fevers and diarrhea — take me there.” Some of them had medicine tags already in their hands — tags that had been written at the branch halls and carried back across the river by a neighbor, tags that had passed from hand to hand through villages the ferryman had never even heard of. The healing hall’s name — it had traveled farther than anyone in Akhetaten had realized.

That same ferryman had been working the crossing for seventeen years, since the days when Akhetaten was nothing but a reed-choked sandbank and a few stone markers on the river’s edge. He still remembered the morning the Theban sub-priests had scratched the words ”The river water is foul” into the white stone slab at the ferry crossing. He remembered because he had watched those four characters take half a year of wind and water to finally wash away — and even then, he had taken a shard of stone and scraped the last traces out of the grooves himself, scraping until the stone was clean, as if he were erasing a prophecy that had never been allowed to come true. Now — now the people kept coming. Not just from Akhetaten. From everywhere. From villages whose names the ferryman had never heard, from settlements so small they did not appear on any surveyor’s map. The words these people carried with them were not ”I heard Akhetaten has a healing hall.” They were ”I heard you can get treatment there.” And beneath those words — beneath the weariness of the journey and the urgency of the symptoms — was something else. The quiet, unspoken acknowledgment: ”I have nowhere else to go.”

One of the first to arrive from beyond the usual catchment was an old man. He did not have a medicine tag, and he did not understand the queue-number system. He simply propped his carrying pole against the wall and sat down on the riverbank branch hall’s stone steps. The bottom of the pole had been worn down so far by years of scraping against stone that it had split into three separate splays, and when he set it against the wall, the splays scraped against the stone with a dry, rasping sound. Shafi happened to be at the riverbank branch hall, checking a batch of Punt chamomile — her fingers moving through the dried leaves, testing each one for moisture. When she saw the old man, she noticed the skin around his jaw — it was stiff. A stiffness that had been there a very long time, the muscles beneath having atrophied into a fixed, mask-like set. The skin itself — the outer layer — had begun to thin and pucker, the way old leather shrinks around a frame that has not moved in years. The left side of his face — the side that still had some movement — twitched faintly, a tic, as if the muscles there were compensating for the ones that had gone dead.

Shafi did not turn him away. Not because the medicine he could offer was valuable — the small, fingernail-sized drops of resin he had brought, barely enough to barter for a single bundle of dried mint, were the kind of thing no merchant in Thebes would even look at. She did not refuse him because she knew: if she refused him, this old man would never open his mouth to ask a second time. He was too old — old enough that the words had long since dried up inside him, old enough that the only thing he had left to offer was something no one wanted. And he knew it. And he had come anyway. She turned, walked into the pharmacy, and wrote an intake registration for the man — ”patient — donated goods — unverified.” Then she handed the old man a queue tag. He did not know how to stand in line, did not know how to hang the tag — he had never been to a formal medical hall before. He simply held the tag in his hand, the way a child holds a smooth stone, and waited. Because Imset’s treatment standards — Article One — said: ”Facial rigidity of unknown origin with localized muscle atrophy — treat as muscle-wasting syndrome; approach as for chronic stroke.” When Imset had written that article, he had underlined the phrase ”approach as for chronic stroke” with a heavy charcoal stroke — so heavy the leather had a groove pressed into it from the pressure.

Imset treated the old man himself. The needle he used was the smallest bronze needle in the old medical kit — finer than the traditional needles, the tip ground to an almost invisible point, and it had been heated over a flame and polished with boiled leather until the metal gleamed. He did not use the standard acupuncture points. Instead, he inserted the needle into the single spot on the old man’s jaw — the spot where the muscle, after years of immobility, still had a chance of responding — the spot where the river-god’s sinew, as the old texts called it, crossed the jawbone. When the needle went in, the old man’s eyes were squeezed shut, and his fingers clutched his own knees — the knuckles white, the tendons standing out like cords. His lips moved silently — he was reciting something, a prayer, a memory, something no one else in the room could hear. Imset did not ask what it was. He simply watched — watched as the needle passed through the skin, through the fascia, into the muscle — and at the moment the tip touched the affected node, the old man’s brow twitched. Just once. An involuntary response — the body, at the deepest level, flinching away from the intrusion. The first time the needle touched that node, the old man’s eyes, which had been squeezed shut, suddenly blinked — and then, for a single breath, they could blink in unison. His lips — his lips, which had been frozen on the left side for so long he had forgotten the feeling of them — moved. Not much. Just a twitch. But they moved — the left corner of his mouth, lifting a fraction of a hair, and in that fraction of a hair, something that had been blocked — for years — was unblocked.

Three days after the treatment, the muscle on the old man’s jaw began to recover. He could not yet speak — but when he drank water, it no longer leaked from the corner of his mouth. When he held his grandson, his jaw — for the first time in as long as anyone could remember — could press against the child’s hair, and that pressure, that small, almost imperceptible pressure of jaw against scalp, was the first tenderness the old man had been able to express in years. The word that traveled down the riverbank was not ”the former High Priest cast a spell.” It was: ”The old man who couldn’t close his mouth — now he can. He didn’t take any medicine, he didn’t spend any money — just needles. Needles, a few needles, and he was cured.” Some people said the needle was magic. Some said the needle was a trick. Others — the ones who had been sick, the ones who had been treated, the ones who had gone home — said nothing. They simply showed their neighbors the place on their own jaw where the needle had gone in, and their neighbors, looking at the faint, fading mark, believed them. Because the mark was real. Because the jaw — they could see it with their own eyes — was no longer frozen. Because the old man, when he smiled now, could smile with both sides of his mouth.

The news traveled along the water — the way news always travels along water, carried from boat to boat, from ferry crossing to ferry crossing, from one woman washing clothes at the riverbank to another. It moved through the fishing families strung along the river, through the quarry camps on the far bank, through the delta settlements whose names no scribe had ever written down. The news did not say ”The healing hall in Akhetaten does not charge fees.” It said: ”The healing hall in Akhetaten — the one by the ferry crossing — they take whatever you can give. If you have no money, they still treat you. If you have medicine — if you have herbs you picked from the riverbank — they’ll take those too. And if you have nothing at all — a handful of dried fish, a piece of honeycomb, a small jar of pickled vegetables — they’ll write it down in the ledger.” These things — these scraps of food, these bundles of wild herbs — had no value in a formal market. They were not currency. They were not barter in any sense a merchant would recognize. But in Shafi’s ledger, every single one of them had a registration number and a date. The date did not represent a fee collected. The date represented the moment — the exact moment — when a person had reached into their own depleted stores and pulled out the only thing they had, and placed it on a stone counter, and said — without saying it — ”This is what I have. This is what I am worth. Please help me.” And the healing hall, without ceremony, without witnesses, had accepted it. No one had announced this as policy. No one had written ”we accept donations in lieu of payment” on a public notice board. It had simply — at some point, in some interaction between a desperate patient and a tired pharmacy keeper — begun to happen. And now it was happening every day.

The second wave to reach Akhetaten came from a Theban commoner — a man of no rank, no title, no official standing. He had come — quietly, without announcement — because his neighbor’s daughter, after returning to Thebes from Akhetaten, had recovered from a chronic knee pain that had resisted every temple prescription for years. The neighbor — who had never believed in anything, who had spent her life muttering that the priests’ medicine was nothing but dried weeds and empty ritual — had seen her daughter walk without a limp for the first time in three years. She had said, to the neighbor, to the ferryman, to the woman washing clothes beside her at the riverbank: ”The healer who treated her — the one at that Akhetaten healing hall — he’s the same one the priests drove out. The former High Priest. The one they said was cursed.” She said it at the ferry crossing — under her breath, half to herself — and then she added: ”If you walk straight from the crossing, keep going until you reach the place that smells like medicine — that’s it.” The ”smell of medicine” was the scent of dried chamomile and wild chrysanthemum that drifted from the riverbank branch hall’s pharmacy — faint, herbal, carried on the damp river air, almost imperceptible unless you knew what you were looking for. She stood there a moment, breathing it in, and then — following that scent — she began to walk.

The Theban sub-priests had been spreading the ”Akhetaten medicine is all rotten” terror for over a year — and still, it had not withstood the counter-testimony of ”my neighbor’s child took the medicine and got better.” Terror and testimony — these two forces, over time, had a measurable half-life. Roughly half a year: by the end of the first half-year, neighbors began to verify — they watched, they asked, they observed whether the child who had taken the medicine was still alive three months later, whether her skin color was better than before, whether she could walk without pain. And the verification — once it began — was as silent and unstoppable as water pressing against a levee. The rumors that the priests had paid for — those elaborate, detail-rich, visceral rumors — slowly, inexorably, lost their power. Not because anyone disproved them. Because people saw — with their own eyes — the facts that disproved them. They saw a mother who had stopped crying. They saw a child who had started eating. They saw an old man who could close his mouth. They saw — and having seen — they no longer needed to be told.

It was Asaf who decided — without anyone asking him, without any formal commission — to document all of this. His plan was simple: to record the healing hall’s entire trajectory, from the first makeshift medical stall to the main hall to the three branch halls, in a single, comprehensive account. ”This will be useful — for anyone who comes after, for anyone who needs to build one of these from nothing,” he said to Lu Zhu. He said it standing before the main hall’s north wall — the wall that was now so densely covered with leather sheets that the original surface was no longer visible, every sheet straight and even, every edge weighted with a wind-stone. He stood before that wall for a very long time, and his finger moved from sheet to sheet — the treatment standards, the patient registries, the pharmacy tallies, the branch-hall catchment maps — and on each one he paused, counting, measuring, the way a man counts the courses of brick in a wall he is about to draw. The first sheet he had ever pinned to that wall — the original treatment-standards draft — was still there, the charcoal strokes faintly blurred now, the edges of the leather beginning to curl. The handwriting — in places, the charcoal had run thin, and in others it had been pressed so deep the grain of the leather had darkened around each stroke — was the same hand that had written twenty years of medical records. And beneath that first sheet, layer after layer, had been added the branch-hall site-selection records — the ones with their rough, marginless maps, the ones with the ferry-captain’s water-depth notations scrawled in the corners. Some of the records had already been superseded. But Asaf — Asaf wanted every single one of them preserved.

”It’s a complete record. A closed loop. From nothing — to this.” He said those words without charcoal in his hand. All he needed — all he needed was to stand before that wall and trace, with his eyes, the path from each branch hall’s founding leather sheet back to its corresponding entry on the main hall’s north wall. The path ran in straight lines — lines he had memorized, lines that led from the farthest initial patient catchment radius all the way back to the original raw survey data. Those lines — those straight, unbroken lines — were not an idealized abstraction. They were the actual footsteps of patients, walking from the periphery to the center. They were the weight of each branch hall’s catchment boundary, measured not in cubits but in the distance a mother could carry a feverish child before the child’s pulse began to fade. The records he had assembled — the ones that Lu Zhu had called ”the raw data of the Akhetaten medical experiment” — were complete. Not because Asaf was a gifted archivist — but because, from the very first day, Shafi had written everything down. Every patient. Every dose. Every outcome. Every gap. And those records — those thousands of entries, cross-referenced against each other, verified and re-verified — were the only reason Asaf could now stand before the wall and say: ”It is a closed loop.”

He did not write anything down that day. The next morning, he asked Shafi for access to the complete branch-hall ledger — every sheet, from the first patient registration tag to the last dose-dispensation tally, every torn leather scrap, every charcoal-smudged entry, every dried herb bundle whose origin and shelf-life had been annotated and re-annotated. Then he began to walk. He walked the old-city branch hall — watched the quarry laborers’ children standing in line for their medicine, watched the pharmacy boy hand each bundle across the counter with both hands, watched the charcoal smudges on the boy’s fingers — those smudges, the same smudges that marked every pharmacy ledger in the network, were the physical residue of each transaction. The boy’s fingers were damp — dried-herb water, mixed with the fine dust of the pharmacy shelves — and when he handed the bundle over, a faint, herbal scent rose from his skin. The person receiving the bundle — a woman whose own fingers were cracked and rough from hauling water — took it in both hands. The boy’s fingers and the woman’s fingers, touching for a single breath across the counter — that touch, there and gone, was the moment the healing hall came into being. Asaf saw it — and in that moment, the word ”medical care” was no longer an abstract category. It was a woman’s cracked fingers closing around a bundle of dried chamomile. It was a boy’s charcoal-stained thumb pressing a tally mark into a leather sheet. It was the faint, sweet, powdery scent of dried fig leaves that clung to the counter long after the patient had gone. Asaf, walking back to the main hall that night, understood something: the healing hall was not the walls. It was the records. And the records — every single line, every single entry — were the residue of those moments, stacked one on top of the other, until they became a wall of their own.

That night, he began to write. What he wrote — what would eventually become the ”Akhetaten Medical Hall Operational Record” — was the first comprehensive report on the healing hall’s entire history. The first draft. He wrote it in a small storage room beside the ferry crossing — the same room Meru had used to shelter from the wind during the embargo, a cramped space that had once been the official warehouse’s surplus-grain counting room, a space so small that if you stretched out your arms, your fingers touched both walls. The room’s only source of light — during the day, when the sun was high — was a single gap in the brickwork, and the light that came through was thin and pale, moving across the writing desk with the sun’s arc. That arc — the sun’s track across the brickwork — was what he used to measure his writing hours. The light moved faster than he did; by the time he had written halfway down a page, it had already crept past the edge of the board, and he was writing half in shadow. He wrote by charcoal — sharpened to a fine point, his characters smaller than usual, because the space inside the leather scroll-case he had brought was limited, and he could not afford to waste a single sheet. He wrote late into the night — until the moon had crossed the sky and the first lamps of the branch halls began to go out, one by one — the old-city branch hall’s lamp, the north-bank branch hall’s lamp, the riverbank branch hall’s lamp, and finally the main hall’s pharmacy lamp. And when they were all dark, he stood up, walked to the door of the storage room to breathe the night air, and looked out — at Akhetaten’s distant lights, the scattered constellations of lamp-flames that marked each branch hall and each public water-point and each night-patrol watchman’s post — and then he went back inside and resumed writing.

The report’s pivot point — the moment where it crossed from ”historical record” into something far more consequential — was the line: ”The Akhetaten healing hall’s origins do not lie in a single person’s vision, nor in the benevolence of a ruler. It began with a mother, carrying her child, walking into a reed-mat shelter where there was no medicine — and a healer who, instead of turning her away, began to write.” He wrote that line, and then he kept writing — tracing the healing hall’s trajectory from that first patient all the way to the branch-hall network’s current catchment radius, from the first bundle of dried chamomile dispensed without charge to the latest shipment of Punt licorice root, still damp from the hold of Meru’s boat. He wrote about the mother who had walked for half a watch carrying her dying child, and about the woman who had been buried on the riverbank without a name, and about the boy who had left a handful of riverbank mud on the pharmacy counter and called it payment. The healing hall’s origins — he realized, halfway through writing the word ”origins” — were not institutional. They were human — irreducibly, inescapably human. And the institution — the walls, the shelving, the record-keeping, the branch halls, the supply routes, the treatment standards — was simply the shell that had grown around those human moments, one layer at a time.

Then he outlined each of the healing hall’s institutional innovations — the site-selection methodology, the pharmacy ventilation-slot design principles, the branch-hall catchment-radius calculation formulas. ”One leather registration sheet. One pharmacy cabinet. One queue-number board.” He wrote these things in ascending order of complexity — and beside each one, he annotated its proven effectiveness, with supporting data and specific case examples. Not averages. Specifics. On a certain day, in a certain month, a certain patient’s registration record showed a certain outcome. A certain branch hall’s inventory sheet showed a certain discrepancy — and the investigation that followed had traced it to a certain error, corrected on a certain date. Every institutional abstraction was pinned, with ruthless precision, to a concrete moment — a moment when someone’s finger had pressed too hard on a charcoal stick, or someone’s sandal had worn through on the road between two branch halls, or someone’s child had stopped breathing and then, against all expectation, had started again.

When he finished the draft of the ”Akhetaten Medical Hall Operational Record,” he sent it — sealed in a leather scroll-case — to Thebes. It went through official channels — through the court’s administrative apparatus — but Asaf had no illusions about where it would end up. He assumed the report would be filed in some dusty archive, buried under a mountain of more urgent documents, forgotten by everyone who had the power to act on it. But what he did not know — what no one in Akhetaten knew — was that at that very moment, the Theban court was drowning. A rash of waterborne disease — the same diseases the Akhetaten healing hall had been treating and documenting for over a year — had broken out in the lower wards of the city, and the temple physicians, paralyzed by ritual and hierarchy, had no systematic response. The court needed — desperately — a proven, replicable, practical model. And Asaf’s report, arriving when it did, was exactly that: a field-tested, data-backed, fully documented system that could be adapted to any region. The report was pulled from the archive — pulled out, dusted off, and circulated among the very officials who had, only months earlier, dismissed Akhetaten as a backwater construction camp. The report’s fate — the story of how it was read, debated, and ultimately used as the template for a nationwide medical reform — belongs to later volumes. What matters now is that Asaf, on the night he sealed the scroll-case, did not know any of this. All he knew was: the report was out. It had left his hands. And whatever happened next — whatever came of it — the healing hall’s story was no longer contained within the walls of Akhetaten.

That same night — a night Asaf spent in the storage room, writing until his charcoal was a nub — the Theban sub-priest Nekhem’s private docks had already been built. The docks — the stockade, the reinforced perimeter wall, the newly mortared stone — had all been completed in a frenzy of night labor, the work crews hauling stone by torchlight because there were too many laborers to feed and too few hours of daylight left. The wall — the wall around the docks — was the kind of wall Meru had once, long ago, called ”Nekhem’s river-route reinforcement.” Its stones had been set in river-mud mortar — the same mortar the old Nile engineers had used to build the flood-retention walls, the kind of mortar that hardened slowly, over months, into something harder than the stone it bound. Between every course of stone, a line of quicklime had been smeared — and in the dark, those lines glowed with a faint, ghostly luminescence, the lime reacting to the moisture in the air, the same reaction that had once, in the dim past, been used to seal the tombs of kings.

When the Theban merchants’ oil lamps began to go out, the cargo — the goods that had been piled on the docks — had already been cleared. The merchants had not been told by anyone — they simply knew: when Nekhem’s stockade and his docks and his wall were all completed, the goods that were waiting on the docks would be moved. Moved — not to the markets, not to the temple storehouses, but to the private warehouses that had been built behind the reinforced wall. The merchants’ wagons, departing in the dark, had passed each other on the narrow dock road — their axles groaning, the wheels wobbling on the uneven stone — and one of them, taking a corner too fast, had toppled half a jar of lamp oil. The oil had spilled across the stone paving of the dock road, and for a few moments — before the dust and the foot-traffic smothered it — the road had glowed with a faint, dark, liquid light. By dawn, the stones were dry. Thebes’s oil lamps were still burning — but the goods they had once illuminated were gone.

Akhetaten received the formal military dispatch about ten days later.

The dispatch that arrived was carried by Horenheb’s courier — a soldier, escorted by two border-guard officers in leather armor. By the time the soldier reached the ferry crossing, he could barely stand. His thigh — the inner thigh, where the saddle had rubbed — was raw and bleeding, the skin worn through to the muscle, the wound packed with desert sand that had been ground into the flesh by the unrelenting friction of the ride. The blood had dried into a dark, rust-colored crust, and at the edges of the crust, where the wound was still weeping, the raw, wet tissue beneath was visible. He stopped before the ferry-crossing stone quay, and the horse beneath him shuddered — a deep, full-body tremor — and then stood still. The soldier took off his own cap, dipped it into the shallow water at the base of the stone quay, and poured the water over his head. It ran down his face in dark, gritty rivulets, and he let it run — he did not wipe it away. Then he walked — limping, his thigh dragging — to Akhetaten’s official warehouse, where he found Lu Zhu and Seb. He did not ask for Imset. He did not ask for the healing hall. He asked for Lu Zhu. The courier said: ”General Horenheb’s orders — deliver this dispatch to Lu Zhu, Master Builder of Akhetaten. No intermediaries. No delays.” His voice was hoarse — the voice of a man who had been riding through sandstorms for three days, who had not drunk water since the last oasis, who had not slept since the last garrison outpost. He was not crying. He was not pleading. He was simply — delivering a message.

The dispatch Horenheb had sent was in a leather cylinder — a desert-patrol dispatch case, its surface scarred with the rubbed impressions of the saddle-holster that had held it against the horse’s flank. The seal was the general’s personal seal — acacia-wood resin, stamped with the hawk emblem of the western command. Lu Zhu broke the seal and drew out the papyrus inside. The handwriting was Horenheb’s own — the ink pale, the strokes economical, the hand of a man who had been writing dispatches in desert camps for thirty years. The papyrus was thin — almost translucent — and when Lu Zhu held it up to the light, the fibers showed through like veins.

”Nekhem has seized the Theban grain reserve and sealed the granaries. Forces are massing west of the inner wall. The western frontier — the garrison line — will not hold.”

This was the first sheet. The second sheet — same papyrus, same hand, but the characters were larger, the strokes heavier, as if the hand that wrote them had been pressing down with the weight of something that could not be spoken aloud: ”Horenheb’s cavalry is engaged on the western border. The garrison at the desert frontier is under coordinated attack. Thebes is about to move.”

”About to move” — that phrase, in Horenheb’s dispatch vocabulary, was the formal designation for an enemy force that had shifted from a defensive posture to an offensive one. Beneath the line, below the hawk-emblem seal, the characters had been written slightly larger, slightly cruder than those on the sheet above — as if the same hand, writing with the same brush, had been forced to press harder because the ink was running low, or because the light was failing, or because the hand itself had begun to shake. Lu Zhu read the dispatch, then folded the papyrus, replaced it in the cylinder, and resealed the cap. The cylinder was a thing that could be opened and resealed without breaking — its construction already anticipating the moment when its contents would need to be forwarded. The interlocking brick-groove pattern on the cap — a design Lu Zhu recognized — was the same pattern used on the brick-kiln water-channel gates: a design that, once you understood it, could be opened and closed with a single, intuitive motion. No need for words. You simply knew — by the way the cap turned in your hands — that it would take the seal. He held the cylinder for a long moment after the resealing — and then, without looking up, said: ”Get Shafi. And Tia. And Meru. We need to talk. At the official warehouse.”

Horenheb’s courier, after delivering the dispatch, was taken to the official warehouse to rest. He sat on a stone block outside the warehouse gate, and Nefer brought him a bowl of barley gruel and a strip of dried flatbread. The soldier took them — and then, looking up at the Akhetaten street before him, said something that sounded almost like a line he had been rehearsing for years: ”The relay stations along the western frontier — they’ve been swept clean. Every broom — put back where it belongs.” The broom — put back where it belongs. That was the first thread the light caught in the corner of Tia’s eye after she heard the dispatch. What the soldier meant — what he was really saying, beneath the image of the swept relay station — was: ”The relay stations on the western frontier are empty now. They’ve been evacuated. The brooms — the brooms that the station-keepers left behind, propped against the door frames — mean the men who used them still intend to come back. They’re planning to sweep the stations out again, when all this is over. And if they don’t come back — the brooms will still be there. Waiting.” He said this — this string of images, this thread of hope wrapped around a core of despair — and then he lowered his head and looked at Akhetaten one last time. Then he closed his eyes and pressed his knuckles into his forehead, and for a long moment he did not move. When he lowered his hand, the imprint of his knuckles — four small, pale circles — was pressed into the skin above his brow. He had been clenching his fists for so long that the bones had left their mark on his own face.

Tia, who had been listening from the doorway, caught that line and held it. ”That man — that soldier — he said ’the broom is back where it belongs.’ Before the walls — the city walls — were even finished.” She said it softly — almost to herself. But Meru, who was standing beside her, heard it. And Meru — who had been the one, during the embargo, to say ”I’ll go ask at the docks” — did not answer. He simply pressed the dispatch cylinder against his chest. The cylinder was cold — the desert night had leached the warmth from the leather — but the papyrus inside, the papyrus Horenheb had written, was still warm from the hand that had sealed it.

The soldier departed the ferry crossing and returned to the desert. Before he left, Lu Zhu gathered every member of the healing hall’s core team. Seb. Meru. Shafi. Imset. Nefer. In the rear courtyard of the official warehouse — the courtyard walls still unfinished, the mortar joints not yet fully cured, the night wind threading through the gaps and making the lamp flames lean — they stood around a rough-hewn wooden table, the same table Seb had used to shape stone, its surface still scarred with the holes where the original pegs had been driven. Lu Zhu stood at the head of the table, and the lamp — the lamp they had set on the table — cast their shadows against the walls. This was not an ordinary night meeting. Everyone in that courtyard — Seb, who had laid the stone; Shafi, who had built the record; and the others, each of whom had carried a different part of the healing hall on their backs — knew that the news they were about to discuss was not news. It was a threshold. Asaf was there too, standing slightly apart, his charcoal sharpened to a fine point. Every few lines, he blew the loose dust from the tip — to keep the characters from smudging. He was not a participant. He was the recorder. The one who would make sure that whatever was decided in this courtyard would not be lost.

Lu Zhu began the meeting by reading Horenheb’s dispatch aloud — the words flat, uninflected, each one laid out like a stone in a course. Then he opened his mouth and spoke to everyone present. ”The message Horenheb sent — and the courier Nekhem sent back — were threats of different kinds, delivered at different times. Nekhem’s threat — the one in his message — was a threat of annihilation. The threat he didn’t put into words — the threat implied by the stockade, by the seized granaries, by the massing troops — is a threat of systemic destruction. The kind of threat where ’destroyed’ does not mean buildings falling down. It means records burning. It means the supply of medicine — every single route, every single dock, every single contract — being cut in a single morning. And it means — and this threat hangs over every person in this courtyard — having to start over. From nothing.”

Then he turned to Shafi.

Shafi was the first to speak after Lu Zhu. Her voice was about a register lower than usual. ”The branch halls’ wartime dispensing protocols — we need to finalize them now. First — if the ferry crossing is cut, the riverbank branch hall will suspend all transfers. The riverbank branch hall handles the majority of the acute cases from across the river — once the crossing is cut, those cases cannot reach us. The main hall and the old-city branch hall will absorb the overflow simultaneously — and the roads connecting the two will need to handle double the current volume. Second — all medicine supply routes may be severed. The current supply lines — there are two: one runs from Thebes through Punt, the other runs along Meru’s southern overland route through the Sand Sea fixed-transfer point. During wartime, both supply lines could fail at the same time — simultaneously.” She said this and then — without pausing — looked at the branch-hall codes on the wall beside her, her eyes moving from S001 to N001 to R001, tracing the line of each code as if she were tracing the supply route it represented — checking it one more time. ”Staffing shortages. If the able-bodied men are conscripted, the branch halls’ duty physicians and pharmacy boys — their family members will be scattered in every direction. Whether those staff can report to their posts — whether the posts themselves will remain stable — no one can predict.”

”We need to start stockpiling now. Medicine stockpiles, food stockpiles — enough for every branch hall to operate without any external resupply for the full duration of a siege. And we need to start today — not tomorrow, not when the first arrow hits the wall. Now. All available surplus — start pre-positioning it. The old-city branch hall and the north-bank branch hall’s storage capacity — double it. The riverbank branch hall’s emergency reserves — move them to a location that is accessible from the main hall within the time it takes to boil a pot of water. The rest — we’ll calculate.” She finished. Lu Zhu nodded and turned to Imset.

Imset did not pick up where Shafi had left off. He did not talk about wartime medicine stocks. He spoke about something else entirely. ”Siege.” He reached out and adjusted the lamp’s wick — pinching the flame down with his finger and thumb, lowering the light. ”In the history of siege warfare — in any siege — the number of combat casualties that arrive at the medical station directly from the front lines is roughly twenty percent of the total. The rest — the wounded who never make it to the front, the wounded who are caught in the collapsing buildings, the wounded who drink contaminated water and die of dysentery before anyone can treat their wounds — those are the ones who fill the wards. Under siege conditions — conditions where food is scarce, where people are eating rotten meat, where they are drinking water that cannot be boiled because there is no fuel — the incubation period for dysentery — from first swallow to first symptom — can be as short as ten hours. And in that ten hours, a single contaminated water source can fell an entire block.”

He said this quietly — as if he were reciting a list of symptoms to a student. But the words — the clinical, dispassionate words — carried the weight of personal memory. This man had been inside a siege. He had watched a company — a single company — lose half its men in ten days because someone had drunk from the wrong well. And that company — that memory — had been buried inside him for years, and it surfaced now, unbidden, in the way he described the progression of a disease he had treated too many times to count. His finger traced a line on the tabletop. ”In wartime, our healing hall will not be a place the army ’uses.’ It will be a place the army ’must hold.’ The wounded — the sick — the starving — the ones who cannot fight, the ones who are too young to fight, the ones who are too old to fight — they will come to us. Not because we are ready for them. Because there is nowhere else. And we — all of us, every person in this courtyard — will treat them. Because if we don’t, the front line itself will collapse. An army that cannot treat its wounded cannot fight.”

”Which means — the riverbank branch hall’s wartime isolation ward — we need to begin construction now.” He had Shafi pull up the branch-hall drawings — and on the northern flank of the riverbank branch hall, on a stretch of empty ground that had been left clear between the branch hall and the riverbank, he sketched an extension. A single wall — one brick length deep, fully enclosed, with a dedicated ventilation pipe that ran directly into the riverbank’s prevailing wind — the pipe angled so that the outflow would be carried away from the main hall and into the river’s current, dispersing before it could settle. ”It needs to be completed before winter. The wall should be one brick-length thicker than the standard, and the ventilation should be independent — running its own pipe.”

Shafi nodded. Her eyes had not left the ground — but her fingers had already traced the outline of that wall on the surface of the table, the same way she always traced the outline of a new shelf on the pharmacy ledger.

Then it was Tia’s turn. Tia did not ask about medical supplies. She did not ask about the siege. She spoke about something no one else in the room had thought to mention. ”When we talk about ’the healing hall’s wartime role’ — we are not talking about a single building.” She pulled out a sheet of charcoal-ruled cloth — the same old leather-rag she had been using to sketch the weaving-workshop’s linen-yardage allocations — and spread it flat on the table. She had already written on it. The handwriting was dense, each line packed tight, the characters small and even.

Line one: ”Women’s Food Preparation Teams — tasked with ensuring the treatment wards’ hot-water supply is not disrupted by enemy action. Meals and medicines — the morning meal, the midday meal, the evening meal, the night-watch meal — the queues at the pharmacy counter must not be interrupted by the flow of patients to the wards.”

Line two: Cloth Preparation Teams — ”All fabric that fails the cleanliness standard for treatment-ward bandages shall be reallocated. Before and during wartime, all available fabric shall be sorted — used fabric, unused fabric, to be divided between the branch halls and stored separately. Contaminated fabric — quarantine it.”

Line three: Gate Posts — Waiting Areas and Drinking-Water Supply. ”Water is the most vulnerable link in any siege. The water basins at the intake gates — patients must not carry contaminated water from the basins into the wards. Separate the basins — intake water, discharge water — and post a guard at each one.”

Line four: ”All women assigned from the weaving workshop to the branch halls shall report to their pre-assigned posts. When anyone asks who is assigned to which post — ’I know who is at which post. Day shift — who. Night shift — who. Shift handover — the incoming shift must sign the confirmation. The previous shift — the previous shift must confirm that the incoming shift has arrived.’”

Tia held the sheet up to the lamp when she was done — and she had not written a single word about military strategy. What she had written was a kind of siege architecture in its own right — not of stone, but of women’s labor, woven through the fabric of the healing hall’s daily operations. Every woman’s name on her sheet was linked to a specific function in the branch halls — from the herb-dispensing counter to the linen-washing basin, from the night-shift ward inspection to the early-morning gruel pot. In wartime, those functions — every single one of them — would be the difference between a ward that held and a ward that collapsed. And behind every function was a woman — a woman who, when the war came, would know exactly where she belonged.

Seb’s contribution was the briefest. He had drawn up a site plan — on a flat stone from the stonemasons’ guild yard — showing the projected layout for fortifying the branch halls’ perimeter walls. ”I’ve already given them the wall-reinforcement plans — the perimeter-wall specs, the water-pipe split into military and civilian lines. The military line — the one that runs closest to the front — we’ve already built a backup. Civilian water — the civilian pipe, if it gets cut, can run independently. No one — no one needs to haul water by hand.” His finger traced across the plan — a heavy line for the main channel, a lighter line for the secondary channel. ”If the main line is breached — if it’s cut — the fire-suppression sand from the kiln yard can be diverted into the secondary pipe — it’ll flow by gravity alone. No one has to go outside. No one has to expose themselves. And the medicine stores — the main hall’s medicine stores — I’ve already had the carpenters build the fire-suppression sand-boxes. One outside every branch hall’s pharmacy door. Two outside the main hall’s. And the sand — the sand has to be dry. The sand has to be loose. If it’s wet — if it cakes — it won’t flow, and if it doesn’t flow, the fire spreads. And the fire — the fire will carry the smoke into the medicine stores, and the smoke — the smoke will cling to every bundle, every jar, every dried leaf, and the medicine — the medicine that took us a year to stockpile — will be ruined in an afternoon.” He said this, and then he lowered his head — and the dispatch cylinder, the cylinder Horenheb had sent, was still in his hands. When he finished speaking, he pressed the cylinder gently against the table’s edge and did not let go.

Meru spoke last. He had been at the ferry crossing all afternoon, negotiating — negotiating with the head of the desert caravan teams. ”I told them — I told them the truth. When the war starts, every trade route — every river route, every overland route to and from Thebes — will be cut. And the stockpiles we’ve been building — every branch hall’s underground emergency storage vault — need to be enough to last. What Shafi just said — the branch halls’ independent pharmacy stockpiles — that’s only the first line. After that — after the stockpiles run out — the healing hall’s medical capacity will depend entirely on locally sourced herbs — the ones Shafi has been cataloguing for the past ten days, the ones that grow wild on the riverbank flats within a day’s walk of the city. She’s already found over thirty species of medicinal wild plants — and she’s already started cultivating them on the riverbank. The first shoots — they broke ground about four days ago. The harvest window is narrow — very narrow. Pre-war, mid-war, post-war — the gap between the last wild harvest and the first cultivated harvest is a single, thin crack. Once that crack closes — once the window passes — we will have nothing left to harvest until the next growing season. I have already sent the first batch of riverbank herb seeds to the riverbank branch hall’s cultivation plot — and I’ve hired extra hands to tend them. If the war outlasts the plants — the rest of us walk the overland route.”

When Meru finished, all the threads of the plan — the timelines, the resources, the responses — had been woven, in Tia’s hands, into a single contingency schedule. The schedule covered every scenario: the branch halls’ emergency-response triggers, the riverbank-herb cultivation and water-source securing timeline, the old-city branch hall’s reserve-stockpile pre-positioning — and every woman, in the hours when her child finally slept, was given a copy of the sheet and told her exact role. By the time the last entry was written, the lamp had burned down to a stub. Tia held the sheet up to the lamp one last time and, with a single, exhausted stroke of charcoal, wrote one final character: ”This plan — the Akhetaten peacetime protocol — shall be implemented immediately upon the declaration of wartime status. Rehearsed once every ten days.”

Lu Zhu’s summary was brief — as brief as everything he said: ”All dispatches — incoming and outgoing — must not be interrupted. The branch halls’ inspections, the water-pipe patrols, the official-warehouse transfers, the courier deliveries — nothing stops. Everything that can be prepared in advance — prepare it one extra layer.”

He did not use words like ”pre-war” or ”wartime mobilization” or any of the grand, hollow phrases that so often accompany the approach of war. He did not use them because he had not yet left Akhetaten — and Akhetaten, at this moment, had already shifted every one of its operational procedures from peacetime to wartime footing. Starting today, every branch hall’s pharmacy replenishment frequency was doubled — from once every half-month to once every five days. Every branch hall’s acute-disease treatment reserves were fully stocked — and every branch hall’s emergency pharmacy reserve cache, in the event of a supply-line disruption, was prepared for independent operation of no less than half a month. Every woman’s old-cloth distribution tally was checked one final time. And none of this — none of it — felt to anyone like an exercise. Lu Zhu put Horenheb’s dispatch back into its cylinder, sealed the cap, and set the cylinder on the edge of the table — the edge where the lamplight would catch it first in the morning.

When the meeting dispersed, it was deep night. Shafi and Tia walked out of the official warehouse’s rear gate together. Neither of them spoke much. They stopped beside a water basin, and Shafi dipped her hand into the water — held it there — then lifted it out. The water ran down her wrist in a dark, gleaming rivulet, and when she lifted her hand, the reflection of the lamp — the lamp still burning in the courtyard — caught on the surface of the water and held there for a moment before the ripples broke it apart. She did not dry her hand. She let the water run cold against her skin, pressing it against her own cheek — and then patted it dry with the hem of her sleeve. ”Some of these people — they’re not coming back,” she said. ”They were sick — before the war even started — and they came to us, and we treated them. And soon — they’re going to be called up — and some of them — they won’t come back. And the children — some of them — won’t have parents. And I will look for them — in the records — and I will find their names. And then I will know — they were here. They were here — and we treated them — and now they’re gone.”

Tia listened. Then she did something — a small, almost automatic gesture that had become, over the past months, as natural as breathing. She dipped her own hand into the water, pressed the cold water against the back of her neck, and held it there — the water beading on her skin, the chill slowly spreading. Then she said — and her voice was steady, the voice of a woman who had been running the weaving workshop’s linen supply through siege drills for weeks without anyone noticing — ”The women — they all know their posts. I’ve already checked. Every one of them — even the ones who can’t read — I made sure they know where they’re supposed to be. Day shift, night shift — it’s all written down. And the one who hangs the broom — she’s still here. She hasn’t gone anywhere.”

Shafi let out a breath — a breath she had not realized she was holding. She was not thinking about the staff shortages or the supply gaps or the children who would be orphaned. She was thinking about a broom — a broom hanging on a wall at a desert relay station, a broom that a soldier had seen with his own eyes, a broom that meant the men who had swept that station were still planning to come back. The soldier’s image — ”the broom, back where it belongs” — was not a military report. It was a promise. A promise that whatever happened — whatever was about to happen — the men who had swept that station, and the women who had swept this hall, and the children who had been carried through these doors in the dark — would still be here. And the broom — the broom would be here too. Waiting. Hanging on its hook. The same hook. The same wall. And when this was over — when the war was over and the dead were buried and the living had begun to forget — someone would walk into that relay station, pick up that broom, and start sweeping again. Because the broom was still there. Because someone — someone who was no longer there — had put it back.

Akhetaten’s daily rhythm — its heartbeat — had not yet been interrupted. In the places where the heartbeat was strongest — the ferry crossing, the branch halls, the official warehouse — life continued. The ferrymen at the crossing still hauled their boats into the water every morning, checking the mooring lines, shouting the departure sequence. The old-city branch hall’s stone-paved road still saw, every dawn, the quarry laborers’ children queuing for their medicine — their fingers growing steadier with each passing day, though their habit of standing in line had not changed. They still stood, as they had always stood, in a single, orderly row — and while they waited, the person behind them would, without being asked, hand the queue tag forward to the person ahead. The north-bank branch hall’s weaving-workshop women — the ones who had once been strangers, who had gathered at the branch hall only because their children were sick — had, by now, become a single, woven thing. Every morning, they carried their children and their spinning baskets to the branch hall — and while they worked, the scent of the medicine they prepared drifted through the hall, and the pharmacy boy, when he handed out the bundles, wrote their names in the ledger with a hand that had, by now, grown almost steady. The riverbank branch hall’s mooring rope — the rope that Shafi had checked the last time she was there — had been tightened again. Shafi had come to inspect it — this time, when she pulled on the rope, it gave a low, resonant hum. The hemp fibers, deep inside the rope’s core, had caught a single reed-stem splinter — a tiny fragment of reed that had been trapped in the twist during the splicing. When the wind blew, the splinter vibrated — a faint, high, almost musical note — and the note, when it faded, was replaced by another. Some kind of signal. Some kind of song.

On the evening before the Theban military movements were officially confirmed — that final evening, when the sky over the desert took on the deep, bruised color of a sandstorm retreating — the sunlight, filtered through the dust-haze, fell across the main hall’s north wall. The light — the color of old copper, of bronze that has been handled for centuries — caught the edges of every leather sheet, every timber peg, every stone weight. Lu Zhu stood before the wall, watching that light. He did not touch the sheets. He knew — he had known for a long time — that those sheets had already changed. The light had turned them. What had once been pale leather — the color of riverbank sand — was now the color of cured bronze. And on the river, far below — the last cargo boat of the season was coming in, its hull low and heavy, and the water droplets falling from the oars, catching that same bronze light, looked like molten metal — a cascade of liquid copper, pouring from blade to river, one drop at a time.
