Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 69: Chapter 5: The Optics of Light — Sunlight Floods the Altar

On the day the temple’s foundation was finished, Kamon came to ask how the columns were to be arranged — and Lu Zhu took him to the brick-drying yard.

A gnomon stood at the edge of the yard, as tall as a man, with ring after ring of calibration marks drawn on the ground around it. Lu Zhu did not speak first. He crouched, and pointed at the gnomon’s shadow for Kamon to see — it was early morning, and the shadow lay long and pale, slanting toward the west.

The marks on the ground were not new. Kamon could see the wear of many mornings in them — the sweep of the shadow’s tip across the packed earth, day after day, had scoured the ground in a shallow arc, the way a door’s threshold is worn by feet. This pole had stood here for a long time, doing its quiet work while the city built itself around it. Kamon had walked past it a hundred times and never once thought to ask what it was for.

”Do you see it.” Lu Zhu said. ”That is today’s shadow. In half a watch, it will be a span shorter. At noon, it will shrink down to the foot of the pole — a small stub, pointing north. Before the sun goes down, it will stretch out long again, leaning east.”

Kamon nodded. He understood shadows. A stonemason — who among them had not spent his life in the sun? A stonemason’s whole trade was the management of light and shade: which face of the stone to cut first, which wall to set so the shadow falls where it is wanted. But Kamon had used shadow the way a man uses the weather — knowing it, respecting it, and never once asking it to do arithmetic.

”I measured it for forty-nine days.” Lu Zhu said. ”Three readings a day — sunrise, noon, sunset. On which day the sun stands, how long the shadow falls, in which direction — all of it is written down.”

He drew a roll of leather from inside his robe and spread it open. It was packed with figures, three lines a day, forty-nine days of them.

”The arrangement of the columns — all of it is on this sheet.”

Kamon took the sheet and looked at it for a while. He could not read the characters, but he could read the spacing of the numbers — dense here, sparse there, like an invisible river.

”Arrange them by this,” Lu Zhu said, ”and from sunrise to sunset, not one column’s shadow will fall across the altar.”

The day the plan was published, the works exploded.

”What? Forty-eight columns, and not one the same height?” An old stonemason cried out on the spot. ”Since the ancestors began building temples, the columns have all been equal in height, equal in girth. Yours — one tall on the east, one short on the west, ragged as a torn hem — what sort of sight is that!”

The man shouting was Old Master Qu. He was a little past sixty, and had spent more than thirty years building temples in Thebes; the stone columns that had passed through his hands numbered no fewer than a thousand. He had fine skill and a stubborn temper, and once he had made up his mind about a thing, ten yoke of oxen could not drag it back.

He had lived his whole life inside the rules of the column. His own master had taught him a saying, and he had kept it forty years: the columns of a temple must be equal in height and equal in girth, standing like a rank of soldiers — only in such a hall could a god sleep at ease. In forty years, every temple he had built had columns that stood dead level. A craftsman whose columns ran a foot taller on one side than the other was a craftsman who had broken his own signboard.

The rule was not vanity. It was the accumulated certainty of a working life: a column line that was not even was a column line that would not bear. When the walls above pressed down unevenly, the tall column carried too much and the short column too little, and in a bad year one of them would speak its disagreement in a crack that ran from footing to capital. Old Qu had seen that crack once, in his youth, on a temple no one remembered now — and he had never forgotten the sound of it, a sound like the temple itself clearing its throat to warn him.

So when Lu Zhu’s drawing was spread open, one look was all it took for the blood to rush to his head. On that sheet, the forty-eight columns stood at ragged heights, long and short, like a patch of grass ruffled by wind.

”Old Qu.” Lu Zhu said. ”These columns have business with the sun.”

”The sun?” Old Qu grew angrier. ”I’ve built temples all my life. The sun is for curing stone. What does the height of a column have to do with the sun? All this fancy display — what use is it?”

Lu Zhu did not argue. He crouched, spread the drawing on the ground, and pointed along it with his finger: ”Old Qu, let’s make a wager. When the columns are up, come the autumn equinox — the noon sun will flood the entire altar, and not one column’s shadow will fall on it. If even one does, I’ll take all forty-eight columns down and re-erect them, and the labor comes out of my own pocket.”

Old Qu stared at him for a long time. ”Take them down and re-erect them?”

”Take them down and re-erect them.” Lu Zhu said.

”Good.” Old Qu knocked his pipe out against his boot sole. ”I’ll be waiting to see it.”

The craftsmen gathered in a ring. Some thought Lu Zhu had gone mad; some thought Old Qu was about to lose his wager; some were simply there for the show. Only Kamon said nothing. He stood outside the ring, his knuckles moving slowly over the stone chisel at his belt. He knew that whatever Lu Zhu said out loud, he had already calculated.

After the crowd dispersed, the works talked of nothing else for days.

Some craftsmen copied the figures from the drawing into the sand and puzzled over them, and from the puzzling came one verdict: ”When this temple stands, the south side will look like a row of short men and the north side a row of tall ones, saw-toothed as a comb. Can that be any way to look?”

”Whether it looks well depends on where you’re standing.” The man beside him said. ”Stand on the altar.”

”I’m not a god. What would I be doing on the altar?”

”On the equinox, go up there and see. Then you’ll know what a god sees.”

The exchange made the round of the works, and the men who heard it laughed — and then stopped laughing, because the second man was not joking. He had been one of the crew that laid the granary foundations, and he had seen what the Master Builder’s drawings did when they met the ground. ”He doesn’t draw what looks right,” the man said, ”he draws what is right, and it looks right afterward. I’ve seen it twice. I’ll believe it a third time.”

But there were older, steadier men who said nothing at all. They knew the Master Builder’s history: when he had built the granaries on the West Bank, no one had understood his drawings either — and when the granaries stood, three years passed without a single damp grain. A thing you cannot understand is not necessarily a thing that is wrong.

The calculations behind the column arrangement did not rest entirely on Lu Zhu’s forty-nine days of his own measuring.

He had asked the Chief Overseer to borrow the old astronomical records. The Overseer made two trips, and finally dug several dust-thick rolls of old leather out of the royal archives — the legacy of the old temple’s astronomer-priests: centuries of accumulated shadow records, the rising and setting positions of the sun through all four seasons, the noon shadow lengths, all recorded stroke by careful stroke.

The man who delivered the rolls was Old Calendar-Keeper. He had managed the old temple’s calendar for the better part of his life; when the decree changing the gods came down, the old temple was closed, and he had been absorbed into the royal archives along with a few old scribes — put in charge of a roomful of old documents no one wanted.

He was a small, stooped man, and the years of watching the sky had put a permanent squint into his eyes, the way years of watching the sea put salt into a sailor’s skin. When he spoke of the old records, his voice carried the particular tenderness of a man speaking of things he has loved and outlived: the temple was gone, the priests were scattered, the calendar was kept now by men who did not believe in it — but the records, at least, had survived, and he meant to see them survive him.

”These rolls,” Old Calendar-Keeper said, his hands trembling slightly as he handed them over, ”are the life’s work of generations of masters. Can you... make use of them?”

”I can.” Lu Zhu said. ”I can make use of a great deal of them.”

The old man’s eyes brightened once — and went dim again. ”Then look them over. When you’re done, return them, that’s all. Of everything in the archives, these are the only things left that anyone still treasures.”

Lu Zhu carried the rolls back to his room, shut the door, and read for three days and three nights.

In those three days, the only sound from Lu Zhu’s room was the turning of leather. He copied the figures from the old records into his own book, one by one, and set each against his own measurements. Where they did not agree, he made a mark, and worked it out again later. When the calculating was done, the book was dense with figures, and the tabletop, the edge of the bed, even the floor were covered with rough leather sheets scored with lines.

On the third day at dusk, Kamon brought him a meal — and found Lu Zhu crouched on the floor, arranging several sheets of rough leather with a charcoal stick. The sheets were drawn with lines of unequal length, like a small squad of men leaning every which way.

Kamon had seen the room through three evenings now, and each time it had grown denser: first the book of figures, then the borrowed rolls spread across the table, then the rough sheets multiplying across the floor like seedlings. Lu Zhu had not once looked up from his work, and the tray Kamon had left the previous evening stood untouched by the door, the bread gone hard at the edges.

”Are these the columns?” Kamon asked.

”These are shadows.” Lu Zhu said, without raising his head. ”When the shadows are right, the columns will be right.”

Kamon set down the meal and crouched to look. He could not read the lines — but he could read Lu Zhu’s posture. It was exactly the posture of the man who, years ago on the West Bank, had calculated the granary’s damp-proofing layers: the whole weight of a mind settled onto one sheet of leather, the rest of the world waiting outside the door. Kamon had seen that posture four times in his life, and each time a city had grown a little taller while he watched it.

On the fourth day, Lu Zhu called Kamon and two foremen to the brick-drying yard.

He drew a fresh ring of calibration marks on the ground and set the gnomon upright. ”Watch,” he said. ”This same pole: the shadow is short in summer, long in winter. When the sun is high, the shadow is short; when the sun is low, the shadow is long. Where the shadow falls — that is fixed. It does not move for anyone.”

He pointed at a mark on the ground: ”This is the noon shadow at the summer solstice. The shortest.” Then at a mark far out: ”This is the noon shadow at the winter solstice. The longest. The whole ring between them — that is spring, summer, autumn, winter; the road the sun walks, step by step.”

”The heights of the columns are set by this.” Lu Zhu said. ”The sun travels across the sky south of our zenith. The southern columns stand between the sun and the altar — make them tall, and their shadows press onto the altar. So the southern columns must be short. The northern columns can be tall — their shadows run north, and the farther they run, the better. The east and west? In the morning the sun is in the east and the shadows sweep west; in the evening the sun is in the west and the shadows sweep east. Set the columns farther out on the east and west, and the shadows that sweep across will fall short of the altar.”

A foreman’s eyes lit up at this: ”So these forty-eight columns are forty-eight rulers — measuring the sun!”

”Right.” Lu Zhu said. ”Rulers for measuring the sun. Get one wrong, and the sun’s account will not balance.”

The foreman’s words went around the yard, and the men who had grumbled about the ragged heights began, slowly, to see the drawing differently. What had looked like carelessness was care taken to the last hair: the southern columns crouched low so the sun could pass over their heads; the northern ones stood tall, their shadows sent running off into the empty ground. It was not a row of soldiers at attention. It was a row of men holding lamps, each set at the height that let the light reach the altar and no further.

Kamon said nothing. He crouched, and studied the ring of marks for a long time. At last he stood, and said one thing: ”This temple — you are laying down rules for the sun.”

The old records and the new capital’s own measurements did not fully agree — the old temple stood at Thebes, and the new capital lay to the north; with the two places at different positions, the sun’s shadows could not be the same. But there was something in the old records worth more than all the shadow data put together: the laws of the sun’s motion distilled by generations of priests — in which season the sun rises from which quarter, in which season the noon shadow is shortest. Set these against his own measurements, and the column arrangement found its roots.

Three days later, Lu Zhu finalized the column layout chart.

Forty-eight columns: the outer ring of twenty-four, the inner ring of twenty-four. The southern columns short, the northern columns tall; the eastern columns spaced wide, the western columns packed close. Beside every column stood three figures: height, spacing, angle of inclination. At the very bottom of the drawing, he wrote four characters:

”No shadow upon the altar.”

The columns began to rise forty days before the autumn equinox.

Hapy’s quarry had the stone ready long before. Forty-eight stone columns, every one of a different size — the tallest fifteen feet, the shortest nine; the thickest two men’s arms could not circle, the thinnest one man could embrace. When the cutting began, Hapy asked Lu Zhu a question he had been holding for a while: ”Master — the columns differ so much in height. Won’t the square look chaotic when it stands?”

”It won’t.” Lu Zhu said. ”When you stand on the altar and look out, you’ll understand.”

The cutting crews worked with their hearts in their throats. The top and bottom faces of every column had to be cut at an angle, and the angle differed for every single column; a hair of error was not allowed. The standard Lu Zhu had set was half an inch — once a column stood, its verticality could not deviate more than half an inch. That standard was stricter than the columns of the temple at Thebes.

The old method of splitting stone used wedges: a line of small wedges driven along the grain, struck one after another, and the stone came apart along its own seam. The split face was then dressed flat, chisel by chisel. For temple column stone, the dressing alone took three days — first the coarse chisel, then the fine chisel, and finally a whetstone wetted and rubbed until the face could mirror a man.

The new method added one step: before the dressing, the angle lines were marked on the stone. The lines came from templates Lu Zhu had drawn — charcoal outlines on thin wooden boards, one board for one column. The cutters followed the templates; a line drawn crooked was redrawn.

The templates changed the rhythm of the yard. Before, a cutter worked from his eye and his experience; now he worked from a board, and the board did not argue. The oldest cutters grumbled that their eyes were being demoted to hands — and the youngest among them quietly learned the angles faster than any apprentice in memory, because a board can be studied at night in the lamplight, while an old master’s eye cannot be borrowed.

When Old Master Qu took over the work, he added a step of his own: after each column’s face was dressed, he poured a bowl of water over the top. The water pooled in a thin sheet — and whichever way it ran showed which way the face tilted. This crude method he had used for more than thirty years, and it was faster than any ruler. The men of the yard learned to recognize the sound of the poured water, and the pause that followed: a pause that meant the face was true, or a longer pause that meant the bowl would be poured again.

”Half an inch?” The senior cutter clicked his tongue. ”Stone is a coarse creature. One stroke of the chisel and you’re a tenth or two-tenths off. Half an inch — that’s mirror-polishing craft.”

”Mirror-polishing craft is exactly what it takes to raise columns that deal with the sun.” Lu Zhu said.

Kamon took the words to heart. He set up a board at the edge of the material yard, and wrote on it, clearly, the dimensions, the angles, and the man responsible for every column. Who cut the stone, who checked the lines, who erected the column — three signatures kept on record. It was the same three-tier inspection that had been set up during the foundation work — after the affair of the moles, every step on the works followed it, and no one dared be careless.

The temple works’ open days came three times that month.

More people came than the month before. They did not only look; they asked. An old man pointed at a half-erected column: ”Why is this one tall and that one short?” The foreman answered as Lu Zhu had taught him: ”The tall ones have their use, and the short ones theirs. Come on the autumn equinox and look at the sun — you’ll understand.” The old man was doubtful: ”Look at the sun? There’s a sun every day. What’s to see?” The foreman smiled: ”The sun on the autumn equinox — that one is different.”

The foreman said it the way a man says a thing he half-believes himself; the answer had been drilled into the crews until the words came out ready-made, and the old man went away not quite convinced. But a child who had come with him asked the same question of a stonemason the next open day, and got the same answer, and told his friends, and the children of the craftsmen’s village began to run a game in which they stood at the far end of the works and tried to guess which column’s shadow would fall where at noon. The game had no name and no rules, and the adults who watched it did not know that they were watching the first public audience for the science of light.

Word spread from ten mouths to a hundred. By the last days before the equinox, half the new capital knew one thing: the temple works, on the autumn equinox — everyone comes to look at the sun.

Erecting the columns was dangerous work.

A stone column weighed several thousand pounds; by manpower alone it could not be lifted. The old method was the sand ramp: raise a ramp of sand beside the column pit, roll the column up the ramp to the pit’s edge, work it into position with pry bars, and let it slide slowly down the pit wall onto its footing. Then the sand was scooped out of the pit, and the column stood. The builders of Thebes had used this method for a hundred years — steady, but slow: three days per column.

Lu Zhu watched for one day, and changed the method.

”Don’t pile the sand ramp due south.” He said. ”Pile it to the east. After the column seats, don’t scoop the sand yet — wait until we’ve checked the lines. While we check, the sand holds the column. It cannot fall.”

The crews did as he said. The line-checking used plumb lines — four ropes let down from the top of the column on four sides, the plumb bobs landing on the calibration marks cut into the footing. When all four points aligned, the column stood true. Old Qu refused at first to use Lu Zhu’s method, insisting on the old sand-ramp way. Kamon did not argue; he let two crews each raise one column, and compared.

Lu Zhu’s method: one day and a half per column. The old method: three days.

Old Qu squatted between the two columns, looking at this one, then that one, his pipe drawing with a sizzle. At last he stood, shoveled his own sand ramp flat, and said: ”From now on — this method, all the way.”

Before the columns went up, one more thing happened.

The first batch of columns was being moved from the storehouse to the works. Kamon was checking them in with his crew — and when they came to the seventh column, no amount of checking would make it right. The column sat on its timber bed tilted, high on one side and low on the other; the angle lines would not come level no matter how they were drawn. He had the column lifted again and pulled the timber bed open — and there, beneath the bearing point, sat a thin wooden shim, worn smooth as polished bone, wedged exactly at the load-bearing spot.

Kamon did not raise the alarm. He had the crew turn the storehouse over from end to end, and found two more of the same shims, both hidden under inconspicuous stone columns. And in the storehouse’s rear wall there was a gap that had not been there at the last inspection — someone had been coming and going through it at night.

That same day, the gap was blocked, the storehouse was locked, and the night watch was doubled. Kamon took the shim to Lu Zhu. Lu Zhu pinched it between his fingers and looked at it for a long time. ”They understand the work better than we thought.” He said. ”Set a shim at the bearing point, and the column looks sound when it comes in — but once it stands, it leans a little more every day. By the time the error shows itself, it will be the day of the great ceremony.”

”They’re counting the days.” Kamon said.

The words hung in the air. Counting the days — it was what the whole works was doing, but from the other direction: the builders counting down to the equinox, the enemies counting down to the ceremony, both of them reading the same calendar and arriving at different appointments. A shim under a bearing point was a small thing, half an inch of wood, and it was also a message: the men on the other side had studied this temple the way the builders had, stone by stone, and they had chosen their moment with care.

”So not one of these columns can be wrong.” Lu Zhu dropped the shim into the lamp bowl and watched it burn. ”From now on, the storehouse’s stock comes in one column at a time, and is checked one at a time. Once checked — used the same day.”

The shim burned slowly, a thread of smoke rising from the lamp bowl, and Kamon watched it until it was ash. Somewhere in the darkness beyond the door, the night watch was already moving the first of the columns.

From that day on, the temple works’ column stone never spent a night in the storehouse.

The columns went up, one by one. When the fourth one stood, something went wrong.

The fourth column’s top face had been cut at too small an angle. Once standing, its midday shadow ran a little less than half a foot south of where it should have been — and by the drawing’s calculation, at the equinox noon, that error would press the shadow onto the altar’s southeast corner.

Old Qu heard the news and knocked his pipe against the stone, tap, tap, tap: ”I said it was all fancy display. This is only the fourth column, and already it’s crooked.”

Lu Zhu did not answer him. He crouched beside the column, ran the plumb lines over it again, and worked against the drawing for the space of half an incense stick. Then he said: ”The column isn’t crooked. The cutting angle was off by three-tenths of a degree.”

The face of the cutter who had dressed the stone went white. Lu Zhu waved a hand: ”No punishment. Cut a new block. And don’t throw this one away — dress it down, and use it on the outer ring’s east side. That position needs to be exactly three-tenths shorter.”

Old Qu said nothing. He stood at the side, watching the crews lower the column and re-mount it, his pipe turning over and over in his hand, and finally he tucked it into his belt and walked off.

That night, Old Qu came back to the works alone. He crouched beside the miscut stone, held a lamp over it again and again, measured its angles three times, and set them against the figures on the drawing. When the checking was done, he stayed crouched on the ground for a long time, and did not get up.

He was not crouching over the stone; he was crouching over his own life. Forty years of equal columns, forty years of temples that stood square and true by the old rule — and here was a stone that said the old rule had been, all along, only a part of the truth. Not a wrong truth — the old temples had stood, and stood well. But a part. The column line that he had believed was the whole of his craft was in fact its first Chapter, and the second Chapter had been waiting in the sun all along, and he had walked past it every day of his working life without once asking it a question.

The next day, Old Qu went to Kamon: ”Give me a section of the cutting work.”

Kamon did not ask questions. He gave it.

After that, Old Qu came to Lu Zhu every few days.

He came to ask. He was a proud man, and in his life he had never acknowledged a superior — but since that night when he had measured the miscut stone three times, a knot had lodged in his heart: there existed in this world a stone he could not read.

”Master Builder,” he asked one day, ”how exactly are the angles of these columns calculated?”

”Shadows.” Lu Zhu said. ”Measure the shadows.”

”I’ve measured shadows too.” Old Qu said. ”Measured them all my life. But I only ever knew that shadows are long, and shadows are short. I never knew a shadow could decide the height of a column.”

”You know.” Lu Zhu said. ”When you build a temple, you know which wall sees the sun first, and which hall goes dark last. That is shadow. It is only that no one ever wrote it down as numbers.”

Old Qu chewed on those words all the way home. The next morning at work, for the first time in his life, he did not reach for his chisel first. He crouched at the edge of the column pit and watched the shadows for a while.

From that day on, his hand was steadier at the cutting.

Erecting a column was delicate work. The sand ramp raised, the column rolled to the pit’s edge, and the crew lay flat at the rim in a row, guiding the stone down with their hands, inch by inch. At the instant the column seated, the sand in the pit took the weight with a soft, muffled thud — the sound every column-raiser most wanted to hear. Heard it, and the column was settled.

The men of the yard had come to know that thud the way sailors know the sound of the anchor catching: it was the sound of a thousand pounds of stone agreeing to stay where it was put. On the days when a column seated on the first try, the whole crew would stand around the pit grinning, as if the stone had paid them a compliment.

When the plumb lines were being checked, everyone had to be still. Lines could not be checked on windy days — the wind pushed the strings off true. The old master who checked the lines knelt half on the footing, squinting one eye down the plumb bob; a deviation of a single hair and he would reset everything.

The thing the line-checking most feared was not wind but coughing. Once, an apprentice sneezed beside a column, and the old master said nothing for a long moment — then gathered up the ropes and said: ”Again.” No one in the yard dared laugh; they held it in until their shoulders shook. The apprentice went crimson, and at the next checking, he held his hand over his own mouth for a full watch. The story made the round of the works, and from then on, the crew approaching a line-checking fell silent of its own accord, the way men fall silent at the edge of a cliff.

There was fun in it too. On the day the twelfth column went up, two crews wagered on whose column would sit closer to the line. Both came within a hair of the mark, and neither would yield. Kamon came to judge, measured with his ruler for a long while, and said: ”Dead even. Credit to both.” The two foremen glared at each other, then crouched down together and shared a pipe — the same pipe, one after the other, the oldest peace treaty in the building trades.

Lu Zhu inspected every column. He was not there for the show — he was there to match the numbers. He held the roll of leather in his hand; for every column raised, he crossed off one figure. On the day all forty-eight were crossed off, he said to Kamon: ”At the winter solstice, the noon shadow is at its shortest. When it comes, I will use that shadow to check this whole temple again.”

All forty-eight columns stood with a little under half a month to go before the equinox.

In that half month, everyone on the works lived by their fingers, counting the days. During the day’s work, whoever could, looked up at the sky several times — clear sky, and hearts were easy; overcast sky, and hearts went tight. Old Qu said to everyone he met: ”Don’t let it cloud over on the equinox. I’ve lived sixty years, and I’ve never seen a bet won and then not collected.”

The counting spread beyond the works. The children’s shadow game at the far end of the yard grew a new rule: the children had begun to bet dried dates on the game, and the grown-ups had begun to let them, because a village that lets its children wager dates on the sun is a village that has started to believe the sun keeps appointments. The old men watched the children’s game and said nothing; they remembered when the only appointments the sun kept were the ones the priests announced.

Lu Zhu did not hurry. He worked by day as usual, and checked his figures at night as usual. He went over the numbers on the leather sheet three times, and had Old Calendar-Keeper check them a fourth. The old man’s arithmetic was weak, but he had one gift: he could not explain the laws of shadow, but his eyes were sharp. One glance at the sun’s height, and he could name the day’s shadow length — to within a finger’s width.

”With you here, I have a foundation under me.” Lu Zhu said.

Old Calendar-Keeper shook his head: ”My foundation is worthless. It’s the sun that has to have one.”

”The sun does not change.” Lu Zhu said. ”As long as the sky stays clear.”

The words went around the works, and the men wanted clear weather all the harder. A few old craftsmen went so far as to set out a small handful of grain as an offering in the work shed, muttering every day: ”Clear sky. Clear sky. Give us a clear sky.” The offering was not to any god the old temple had known — it was to the sky itself, which was perhaps the oldest god of all, and the only one whose answer could be read in the morning.

On the night before the equinox, no one on the works could sleep.

Lu Zhu made his last inspection of the columns. He walked with a lamp, checking them one by one — the column feet, the column tops, the calibration marks on the footings. Forty-eight columns, and he checked them forty-eight times; by the time he reached the last one, the first watch of the night was already past.

He did not hurry, and he did not skip. A man who has staked the whole account on forty-eight stones checks them as he would count a sum he has already added three times: not because he doubts the addition, but because the act of counting is what holds the night together. Kamon walked behind him in silence, holding the lamp high, and neither of them spoke until the last column was done.

The two men stopped at last at the edge of the altar. The moonlight was fine; the altar lay quietly there, like an empty stone bed, waiting for tomorrow’s sun to make it up.

”Tomorrow,” Kamon said, ”they will all come.”

”Mmm.” Lu Zhu answered.

”Have you thought,” Kamon said, ”what happens if the shadow does press onto it?”

”It won’t.” Lu Zhu said. He paused, and added: ”I’ve calculated it.”

The words were flat, and Kamon knew the flatness: it was the flatness of a man who has done the arithmetic so many times that the answer has stopped being an opinion and become a fact of the world, like the weight of water or the direction of the wind at dawn. Kamon looked at him, and asked no more. The two men walked out of the works one behind the other. Behind them, the forty-eight columns stood in the moonlight, like forty-eight soldiers keeping the night watch.

On the day of the equinox, before the sky was light, the temple works was already packed.

The craftsmen’s village came first — they had the nearest ground and had staked out their places the evening before. Then came the residents’ quarter, old and young together, each clutching a piece of dried flatbread for breakfast. Half a watch before sunrise, the ferry crossing had put on a third boat — people from the far bank had heard the news and rowed over, boat pressed against boat, until the stone steps of the crossing were packed.

The crowd was of a kind the new capital had never seen gather in one place: farmers who had left their fields mid-morning, weavers with loom dust still in their hair, a fishwife carrying her unsold basket because the news had caught her between the dock and the market. They did not know each other, and they did not need to; the thing they had come to see had made them, for this one morning, a single audience. A few had come to believe, a few to mock, and most — the way of crowds — to see what everyone else was seeing.

The Chief Overseer wanted to post soldiers to keep order. Lu Zhu stopped him. ”Let them look.” Lu Zhu said. ”The temple is built for people, not for soldiers.”

So there were no soldiers on the works. Only people. Old, young, men, women — several hundred of them, pressed along the north and west edges of the site like a wall of breathing. Every one of them faced east, waiting for the sun.

The Overseer stood at the north with a file of officials. Old Calendar-Keeper stood in the crowd clutching a roll of old leather. Hapy had ridden in from the quarry. Meri and Meru were both there. Even a few pharmacy boys from the healing hall had come, standing on tiptoe to see. The children of the craftsmen’s village — the ones who had played the shadow game — had climbed onto their fathers’ shoulders, and their eyes were the widest of all. They had been betting dried dates on the sun for weeks; they were about to collect, and they knew it, though none of them could have said what they had won.

When the sun rose, the crowd went silent.

The first light came over the eastern horizon and crossed the two easternmost rows of columns, falling dead straight along the east-west axis — like a golden ruler laid from the altar’s eastern edge all the way to its western edge.

”The light is coming in.” Someone whispered.

It was a woman holding a child. Her husband beside her thought she was being foolish and tugged at her sleeve. She ignored him, hitched the child higher on her arm so it could see better. The child, too young to understand any of it, pointed at the light and laughed, and the laughter ran along the front row like a ripple.

The light walked along the central axis, slowly — so slowly it could be watched. It passed the first row of columns, passed the second, and then paused at the altar’s eastern edge — just for an instant, like a man hesitating on a threshold — and then flowed in, painting the eastern half of the altar gold.

A low stir ran through the crowd. Someone tried to press forward and was held back by the people behind. No one spoke. Several hundred people, and the only sounds were breathing, and the small whisper of wind passing through the columns.

The sun climbed. The crowd tilted their heads back, watching the light move between the columns. The movement of the shadows was invisible — shadows move too slowly — but the light they could see. It seeped in from the east, crossed the altar, and lit the whole of it, piece by piece. No one spoke. Hundreds of eyes fixed on the altar, on the gold spreading gradually across its floor.

At noon, the sun reached its highest point.

No one announced the hour. But Old Calendar-Keeper knew. He stood at the very front of the crowd, clutching his roll of old leather, his eyes fixed on a short stub of shadow at his own feet. The stub shrank from long to short, inch by inch — and when it reached its shortest, the old man’s lips moved.

”Noon.” He said, low. The words were not loud, but everyone in the rows around him heard.

The old man had announced the hour the way his teachers had announced it for generations — by the shadow’s own testimony, not by any man’s word. It was the first time in his life that the announcement had been made to a crowd which understood what the shadow had just said.

At that instant, the whole crowd held its breath.

The sunlight fell straight down, flooding the entire altar — full, and not a finger’s breadth short. The gold lay even, edge to edge, with no thin place, no dark seam — as if the altar had been painted in a single stroke by a hand that did not tremble. The shadows of all forty-eight columns stood neatly outside the altar, like forty-eight giants kneeling in a ring around it; not one shadow’s edge crossed the altar’s rim. The builders of Thebes, in a hundred years of temple work, had never seen such a thing; the old masters in the crowd knew it, and the knowledge showed in the way they stopped shaking their heads and simply stared. And on the open ground north of the altar, the shadow of one tall column fell exactly on the calibration line Lu Zhu had cut beforehand — dead on, not a hair off.

”A marvel.” Someone shouted — no one knew who was first.

Then a second voice, a third, and at last the whole field erupted.

”Sunlight floods the altar! It truly floods the altar!”

”Not one shadow pressed onto it!”

”This column’s shadow — it’s dead on the calibration line. Look!”

Old Calendar-Keeper pressed through the crowd, his lips trembling. He pulled the old leather roll from his breast, spread it open, and looked from it to the altar full of sunlight, and back again. The roll had been handed down from his master’s master — centuries of noon shadow lengths, recorded year by year. And in this one moment, every figure on it had come alive. He held the roll out toward the altar as if introducing two old friends who had never met: the paper sun of a hundred scribes, and the sun itself, agreeing at last, in full view of the city.

”Masters,” he murmured, ”can you see it. The shadow is still inside the rules.”

He said it to the dead — to the teachers who had taught him to write the figures, and their teachers before them, all the way back to the first hand that had ever scratched a shadow’s length onto leather. For generations they had kept the records without knowing what the records were for; they had measured the sun the way a man polishes a stone, because it was the craft they had been given. And now, in a city the old temple had never heard of, their figures had stood up and done work. The old man’s eyes were wet, and he did not wipe them, because there was no shame in it: his teachers’ lives had been spent, and today, they had been spent for something.

The craftsmen were stunned into silence. The old masters shook their heads, saying it was impossible — and said it even as they stared at the proof in front of them, because forty years of habit does not yield to one noon. Old Qu pushed to the very front, his eyes fixed on the altar. He walked three circuits around it, then crouched and touched the edge of the column shadow on the ground. The shadow lay right beside his fingers, solid as if it had been cut into the earth with a knife.

He pressed his palm flat against the shadow’s edge — the edge where light and dark met — as if the boundary itself might be tested by touch. It held. He moved his hand a finger’s width and the light took it; drew it back and the shadow took it. The line between the two was as straight as a snapped cord, and it was exactly where the drawings said it would be.

”A marvel.” Old Qu said. His voice shook; something moved in his eye sockets. ”I have built temples for more than thirty years... more than thirty years... and I have never seen this. This is no human craft. This...”

He could not finish. A young craftsman beside him reached to steady him — and was slapped away.

”Don’t hold me.” Old Qu said. ”I can stand.”

He could, indeed, stand steady. But when he rose, he turned toward the altar, and bowed deeply.

The bow was not to the god — the old man had bowed to gods all his life and knew the difference. It was to the thing on the ground before him: to a boundary that had been drawn in numbers and kept, to a promise made in the presence of witnesses and fulfilled in front of a city. He had spent his life building for gods he could not see. This was the first time he had seen the promise his own hands had helped keep, and it stood in the sun where everyone could look at it.

From that day on, Old Qu said one thing to everyone he met: ”The rules of the column — I only ever learned half of them.” When someone asked what the other half was, he shook his head and pointed toward the altar: ”The other half is in the sun. Learn it from the Master Builder.”

When he took on apprentices after that, he did not teach them cutting first. He led them to the edge of the altar and made them watch the shadows for a whole day. The apprentices’ faces burned in the sun, and they dared not complain — the old master had said: a man who cannot read shadows has no right to touch a temple’s columns. And the apprentices, squinting into the glare, began to see what he meant: the shadows moved, and the movement had a shape, and the shape could be counted. By evening, each of them had counted a different number of lengths — and each of them knew, without being told, that the counting was the first course of the craft.

At sunset, there was a second show.

The evening sun came slanting from the west, gilding the altar a deep gold. The column shadows stretched long, ranked in orderly rows toward the east, like a file of silent giants watching the sun go down. The crowd had not dispersed; no one wanted to leave. A child riding his father’s shoulders pointed at the altar and shouted: ”The sun lives in there!”

The whole field burst out laughing — and the laughter had a note in it that the city had not heard before: the particular joy of a crowd that has seen a promise kept. The old men laughed loudest, because they had lived long enough to know how rarely the world performs exactly as promised, and here, before their eyes, it had done so to the inch.

In the crowd, Hapy’s grin would not come off his face. He had ridden back from the quarry through the night; the quarry’s stone dust was still on his boot soles. Someone recognized him and called: ”Hapy! Those columns — they came from your quarry, didn’t they?” Hapy swelled his chest: ”Forty-eight, not one missing!” The crowd laughed; Hapy’s face went redder, but his spine stood straighter than any column.

Meri did not press forward. He stood behind the crowd with his arms crossed, reading the altar’s foundation from east to west, and then from west to east. When he was done, he said, low, to Lu Zhu: ”No settlement in the foundation. The rammed earth is holding.” Lu Zhu nodded: ”With you watching it, I’m at ease.”

Meru talked the most. He looked at the altar, then at the crowd, then at the ferry crossing, muttering to himself: ”Once word of this temple gets out, the new capital’s foot traffic will climb. Foot traffic climbs, and shopfronts get dearer...” Halfway through, he laughed at himself, knocked his pipe against the stone edge, and said: ”Never mind the reckoning. Today’s light alone is worth ten shopfronts.”

Lu Zhu stood in the crowd and did not laugh. He was looking at something else — on the ground at the altar’s western edge, the setting sun’s shadow was crawling inch by inch across the calibration line. He counted. It matched. Then he raised his head and looked at the sky.

There were clouds at the sky’s edge. Not many — but white in a way that was suspicious.

”And if it were overcast?” He said, low, his voice so quiet that only Kamon heard.

”What?” Kamon asked.

”Overcast.” Lu Zhu said. ”When the sun does not come out — is this temple still holy?”

Kamon looked at him and said nothing. He knew this man was already calculating the next problem.

Back at the Chief Construction Bureau, Lu Zhu did not rest. He lit the lamp, spread out a blank leather sheet, and first drew a circle — the altar. Then he drew several squares — clouds.

Overcast. When clouds hide the sun, the light scatters. And scattered light — can it still keep its rules?

The question had been with him since the afternoon, when he had seen the suspicious white clouds at the sky’s edge. The equinox had come clear, but the equinox was not the day that mattered. The ceremony would come at its own season, and no one could order the weather for it. A temple that worked only in sunshine was a temple that worked at the priests’ mercy — and that was precisely the dependence he meant to break.

He drew into the second half of the night, and the sheet gained several arcs. The arcs had not yet become anything, but Lu Zhu already had the shape of an idea: when the light fails, something else can take its place. What that something was, he was not ready to tell anyone yet.

He folded the sheet and pressed it into the bottom layer of his drawing rolls. Outside the window, the sky had gone gray; another day was coming. He blew out the lamp and lay down in his clothes. His dreams were full of shadows — long, short, slanting, straight — ringed around a temple with no roof.

That same night, the works unexpectedly held a small celebration.

The Chief Overseer put up the money, and the craftsmen’s village boiled a few pots of mixed-bean porridge. The craftsmen squatted around the altar eating, looking up at the sky between mouthfuls. The stars had come out, one by one, very bright. The porridge was plain and the benches were stones, but there was a particular taste to food eaten on ground your own hands had made level: the salt of a day’s work that had come out exactly as promised.

Old Calendar-Keeper found Lu Zhu and held out the roll of old leather: ”Master Builder — this one, you keep. Locked in the archive, it is a dead thing. In your hands, it can go on watching the sky.”

He said it with the matter-of-factness of a man handing over a well-loved dog to a better home — grief and relief in the same breath. The roll had been his charge for decades, and in all those decades no one had asked what it was for; in one afternoon, the new capital had shown him. The records would outlive him now, and watch the sky from hands that could read it.

Lu Zhu did not refuse. He took the roll and wrapped it in oilcloth.

”In the days ahead,” the old man said, ”if the business of the calendar ever needs an old hand — say the word.”

”It will.” Lu Zhu said. ”On the winter solstice, I will ask you to come again. The winter solstice’s shadow is the shortest; I want to check the temple once more.”

Old Calendar-Keeper nodded and nodded — and as he nodded, he laughed at himself, laughing like a child.

Later into the night, the works emptied.

Kamon was the last to leave. He stood at the edge of the altar for a while, and then said, suddenly, to Lu Zhu: ”Now I understand. Why that stake could not be moved, why those six stones could not be swapped — they were not moving the foundation. They were moving the sun.”

”Mmm.” Lu Zhu said.

”The business of the light — we have it in hand now.” Kamon said. ”What comes next?”

Lu Zhu looked at him. The wind came up off the river, carrying moisture, blowing the last warmth off the altar.

”Light has its rules.” Lu Zhu said. ”And sound has its rules. Once the altar’s paving is laid, I’ll try something else.”

The words were spoken as casually as a man ordering timber for the morning, and Kamon heard in them the same quiet confidence that had preceded every building this city owned. He had learned to recognize the tone: it was the tone of a man who has already seen the finished thing and is only waiting for the world to catch up to it.

”What?” Kamon asked.

”Making the man standing at the far edge of the square hear the man speaking on the altar.” Lu Zhu said. ”Without shouting.”

Kamon was quiet for a moment. He was a builder, and he knew what sound did inside stone — every mason had stood inside a half-built hall and heard his own voice come back at him changed. But to make sound travel two hundred paces on purpose, the way the light had traveled — that was a different order of craft, and Kamon could not yet see how it would be done. He said, low: ”The old temple’s priests — after this, they won’t have any place left to fake the gods.”

Lu Zhu did not answer. The two men walked out of the works one behind the other; the moon was already past its zenith.

That same night, in Thebes, in a hidden chamber deep inside the temple of Amun.

News from the new capital traveled faster than anything else in this country.

Three days after the equinox, Meru’s caravan reached the West Bank. When the man in charge of the convoy told the story of ”sunlight floods the altar,” the West Bank’s elders did not believe it at first — and then the details came: forty-eight columns, none the same height; the noon sun flooding the whole altar without a single shadow falling on it. Then they believed. Someone wanted to go to the new capital on the spot and was talked down by his family: ”The equinox comes once a year. Go next year.”

The words ”go next year” were themselves a kind of miracle — a promise that there would be a next year, and a year after that, and that the new capital would still be standing to keep the appointment. On the West Bank, where the old gods’ power had once meant the harvest and the flood, the people were learning to trust a different kind of certainty: the kind that could be watched from a drying-yard pole and written down in leather, and would be there when they came back to look.

After that, the news followed the trade roads into Thebes. In the marketplaces of Thebes, there was talk of every kind. Some cursed the new capital for building a heretical shrine. Some quietly asked how tall and short the temple’s columns really were. And a few low-ranking priests of the old temple shut their doors at night and told the story as a joke — and as they told it, one by one, they fell silent.

The silence was the truest news of all. Jokes about the new capital had been a staple of the temple’s lower ranks for years — the heretic city, the mud-brick palace, the foreigner who drew lines in the dust and called them buildings. But a joke needs a flaw to bite on, and this story had none: the columns were uneven, yes, and yet the light had come. A man could not laugh at that, and could not explain it, and so the low-ranking priests sat in their rooms and did what men do when the old explanation fails: they waited for another explanation to arrive.

But deep inside the temple of Amun, there was one who knew all of it earlier than the marketplaces.

Only one lamp was lit. Nekhem sat behind it, his white robe without a single crease. His fingers rested on the table, the pad of his thumb moving slowly over a ram’s-head emblem of Amun — the emblem had followed him twenty years, its edges worn bright by his touch.

The room had no window, and the air had the particular stillness of a place where nothing has been allowed to move for a long time. The emblem was the only thing in it that moved: the thumb going over and over the same worn edge, the gesture of a man who has held one idea in his hand for twenty years and worn it smooth.

Before the table stood a man. White robe, head bowed, reporting the news from the new capital, sentence by sentence.

”...forty-eight columns, none the same height; the common people could not understand it — but on the equinox, the noon sun flooded the whole altar, and not one column’s shadow pressed onto it. The whole city went to see it. Everyone calls it a miracle.”

In the hidden chamber, the lamp’s wick popped.

Nekhem’s fingers stopped.

”Sunlight floods the altar.” He repeated the four characters, his voice very soft, as if chewing a bitter stone.

”Yes.” The man in white said. ”They also say — from now on, anyone may enter, anyone may look. The god... they have set him out under the sun.”

Nekhem said nothing. He rose slowly and walked to the west wall of the chamber. An old map of Thebes hung there, and on the map, the position of the temple of Amun was marked deepest of all.

”You think they are building a temple?” He spoke with his back to the man in white, his voice so low it seemed meant only for himself. ”They are tearing down a wall a thousand years old. The god in the dark — men revere him. The god in the light — men become gods themselves. When that day comes, what will they need us for?”

The man in white dared not answer.

After a long moment, Nekhem turned. His face was hard to make out in the lamplight; only his eyes were bright — like two deep wells.

”Send the order down.” He said. ”The city defenses: double the hands. The grain: keep buying. Do not wait until the new capital’s temple is finished and we are still unprepared.”

”Yes.”

The man in white withdrew, and his footsteps went down the passage and faded, and the chamber was left with Nekhem alone. He sat back down behind the lamp and turned the lamp shade out a little, letting it burn brighter.

The firelight crossed his face, and the ram’s emblem in his hand. The emblem was warm from his thumb — twenty years of the same thumb, the same edge, the same idea worn smooth. In the new capital, a boy had drawn a circle on the ground and called it the altar, and the sun had agreed to keep an appointment there. That was the whole of it, and it was more than enough.

”The sun has come out.” He said, softly. ”The temple of Amun is going to close its doors.”

Outside the window, the night of Thebes lay heavy and dark — except in the direction of the temple, where a few points of light flickered, like flames that might go out, or might catch fire.
