Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 88: Chapter 10: The Northern Border in Peril — The Hittites Pour Across the Frontier

The urgent dispatch reached the city just as the sky was darkening.

The messenger had come from the north, changing horses all the way. Seven days and seven nights, six horses — the sixth had foundered within sight of the river, its legs gone, its flanks heaving. On the last stretch the horse had died under him, and he had run the rest of the way on foot, the last li and more with his lungs burning and the dispatch pressed against his chest. He was a young man, but his face had aged ten years on the road. When he entered the palace, his legs would no longer obey him; he fell full length on the stone steps, and the dispatch rolled out of his breast — on the wax seal, the urgent stamp of the northern border command.

”Hit... Hittites...” He lay on the ground, his throat as if stopped with fire, forcing out only a few words: ”The Hittites... have crossed the river.”

The palace men lifted him up — two of them taking his arms, his legs folding under him as he rose — and only then, piece by piece, between draughts of water that he drank without tasting, did he get out the whole story. The water ran down his chin and mixed with the dust of the road; he did not notice. He spoke in short bursts, the words coming the way they come from a man who has been holding them in for seven days. He said that on the day he left the northern border, the villages beyond the border wall were already empty. The people had all run; the chickens did not call, and the dogs did not bark. On the official road, cart after cart of refugees moved south, the old people in the carts holding the children, no one daring to look back. He said that when he changed horses at the third way-station, the station keeper asked him how far the Hittites had come. He could not speak; he only shook his head. The station keeper hitched up his own cart that very night and ran.

”I am a messenger.” He said at last, and the words came out with the last of his strength, clear and steady — the pride of a man who has done the one thing he was sent to do. ”I cannot run. If I run, there is no one left in the north to carry the word.”

That night, the lamps of the new capital’s palace burned until dawn.

In the palace, the pharaoh did not sleep all night. Akhenaten walked the hall, back and forth, reading the dispatch again and again — the young pharaoh whose reforms had shaken the temples of a hundred gods, walking the length of his own hall in the dark, the sheepskin in his hand. He did not order troops out; he did not order them held. The attendants knelt outside the hall, listening to the footsteps inside — from the east wall to the west wall, and back from the west wall to the east wall, the pacing of a man weighing a country.

At dawn, the pharaoh passed three verbal orders — the words coming out of the hall one by one, and the attendants carrying them down the corridors like lit lamps. One went to the war office, to muster the troops; one to the royal stores, to count the materials; and one — to Horenheb, at the pacification camp south of the city — to report the news. Three orders, and in the silence after them, the whole palace understood what had changed: the war that had been one war was now two.

”The siege in the south,” the pharaoh said, ”cannot be lifted. The door in the north cannot be broken. These two things, I require done together.”

Everyone in the hall lowered their heads. No one dared answer that sentence — because everyone knew that these two things pulled on the same rope, in opposite directions.

The war office’s council ran from noon until dark.

The old clerks of the war office brought out the military registers of the whole country — the rolls tied with cord, the ink of three reigns on the pages — and worked the numbers, entry by entry, the counting-rods clicking on the tables. They counted the garrison of the new capital, the militia of the West Bank, the defense force of the western line, the ships of the river fleet — every unit that could march, every unit that could be spared, every unit that could not. The counting-rods moved in columns across the tables, and the columns came up short again and again. At the end of the reckoning, an old clerk slapped his counting-rod on the desk, the rods jumping with the blow: ”With this many soldiers, holding one line is tight. Holding two is cutting one rope into two pieces.”

”Then cut it.” Another said. ”If we don’t cut, the north is gone. If the north is gone, the south can be held to the death, and it will still be held for nothing.”

”But have you thought?” A third spoke. ”The thirty thousand rebels outside Thebes are not wooden men. The moment we draw troops away and the south loosens, the rebels turn around and bite the new capital. By then, both fire lines, north and south, will have burned to the very door of the royal city.”

The room was silent again. The candle flames threw a dozen shadows on the walls, long and short — like a company of ghosts counting on their fingers.

At last, the old chief of the war office spoke. He was seventy, his hair entirely white, and he had sat in this room for forty years — had watched the door of the north grow older with him, and had said, in every lean year, that it must be repaired. He spoke slowly, the way a man speaks who has carried the same warning for so long that it has worn a groove in him. He said: ”Let me tell you an old precedent. In the days of the old pharaoh, the west had wolves and the north had drought — both in peril at once. The old pharaoh said one thing — wolves eat men; drought eats the land. Lose the land, and men have nowhere to run. So first cure the drought, then the wolves.”

”The chief’s meaning is—”

”Save the north first.” The old chief said, and the room went quiet around the two words — the quiet of a room where a decision has just been made by a man who has the right to make it. ”The northern border is the land; it is the nation’s door. Inside the door, the pot boils over; if the door breaks, the whole pot is carried out. The rebels of the south are the fire under the pot. However high the fire, the pot is still there; break the door, and the pot is gone.”

”Then what about the south?” A younger clerk asked — the question that had been waiting in the room since the old chief began, the question no one had dared put first.

”The south — surround it.” The old chief said. ”Horenheb has surrounded it for three months, and surrounded it tight — tighter than any siege I have seen in forty years of reading siege reports. Surround it three months more; the city’s grain runs out, and the rebels will scatter on their own without attacking. The south does not need soldiers; it needs time. The north does not need soldiers either — it needs a wall. Raise the wall, and the soldiers are saved.”

The old clerks of the war office looked at one another — the look of men who have been handed a decision that will be argued about for years, and know they will not live to see the argument end. That night, the lamps of the war office also burned until dawn, and the counting-rods clicked on the tables until the first light, working the numbers of a war that had just doubled.

The contents of the dispatch, at noon the next day, were carried south by the palace’s courier. The courier did not dare rest; two days and two nights, he rode to the pacification camp south of the city. When he dismounted, he could not stand steady either; he held the dispatch high above his head:

”General Horen! Urgent dispatch from the north! The king’s order — the general is asked to read!”

Horenheb was on the watchtower, looking out over the works his men had raised. He came down the ladder, took the dispatch, and did not open it at once. He looked north first — the way a man looks at the sky before he reads a letter that will change his season. North — across hundreds of li of open plain, across a river, and then, farther north, the border wall of Egypt: the wall he had guarded for half his life, the wall he knew best of all the walls in the land.

”The wall of the north,” he said, low, ”is older than the old walls of Thebes.”

In the tent, the dispatch lay open on the table, the edges weighted with stones from the camp’s own works. The letter was not long — barely a page — but every word seemed written in blood: the Hittite host crossed the border last month; the two small client states of the northern border fell at the first battle. The defenders fell back to the border wall, losing three forts in a row. The governor of the northern border wrote in his own hand, begging for aid: soldiers — lacking; grain — lacking; building materials — lacking; the border wall, neglected for years, has more than ten breaks, and once the Hittites’ battering ram arrives... The writing broke off there, the handwriting disturbed, and the rest of the line was blurred by a stain.

”That is blood.” Horenheb said. ”Not water.”

The whole tent was silent — the silence of men who had seen the stain and known, without being told, what it was. The stain ran the width of a thumb, and the handwriting on either side of it did not match: the writer had stopped, and another hand, or the same hand shaking, had not finished the line.

Horenheb set the dispatch down, and said: ”Those three forts — I toured them all when I was young. The first stands by the river; the wall is stone, but low. The second blocks a mountain pass — one man can hold the gate, but the grain road behind it runs along a single track. The third is the farthest north, the thinnest populated; when the winter snow seals it, reinforcements from the south take ten days to half a month to arrive.” He named them one by one, as a man counts the scars on his own hands — and the men of the tent listened the way men listen to a commander who is counting his own scars, not someone else’s. ”They did not strike those three forts at random. First cut the river, then block the pass, then seal the snow. Every step lands on the place that hurts.”

”The general means,” an officer asked, ”that there is a man among the Hittites who knows war?”

”The Hittites have always known war.” Horenheb said. ”Their great king drills his troops every year, waiting for this day. In all my years on the western line, what I feared most was not the Libyans’ horses — it was that one day, the north would catch fire.”

Seb stood in the corner of the tent, and his hand went unconsciously to the roll of drawings at his breast. His eyes had not left the dispatch.

”General,” the old centurion spoke first, ”if the north is lost, Egypt’s door is open. The Hittites come down the river, straight for the new capital. By then—”

”By then,” Horenheb took over, ”what use is this city we are surrounding?”

He walked to the sand table. The table had been shaped from wet earth in these past days: Thebes in the center, their works south of it, the rebels’ great camp north of it. He took a small red flag and planted it at the table’s north — the position of the northern border. He took another, and planted it on the model of Thebes’s wall.

Two red flags. One south, one north.

”Right now,” he said, ”we live two lives. One has its hand on the rebels’ throat; the other has someone’s hand on Egypt’s throat.”

The news reached the city that night.

A-Tu’s boat, carrying Horenheb’s letter in his own hand, slipped along the bank into the city’s west. The letter was written on sheepskin, the characters large, the lines short — Horenheb’s hand. Lu Zhu opened it under the lamp in the granary’s back courtyard, and read it word by word.

”The north — three forts broken. The Hittites have swallowed two small states. The northern governor begs for aid — soldiers, grain, materials, all in crisis.” Lu Zhu finished the letter and set it down slowly on the table. ”The court must decide: where the soldiers going north are drawn from.”

”Drawn from where?” Kamon asked.

”Only two places.” Lu Zhu said. ”One is the garrison guarding the royal city; the other is the pacification army south of the city.” He paused. ”Draw from the south, and Thebes cannot be held — three months of fighting, wasted. Draw from the new capital, and the royal city is empty — if the Hittites truly come south, the new capital is the first target.”

”Then what do we do?”

”That is the court’s dilemma.” Lu Zhu said. ”And it is ours.”

He walked to the defense map and stood before it for a long time. On the map: Thebes, the wall, the wells, the granaries. He looked at it for a long while, and then said suddenly: ”Send for Mery. And the chief officiant.”

When everyone had arrived, the Zi hour was already past.

Lu Zhu read Horenheb’s letter again. Then, on the defense map, he drew two lines: one, from Thebes south — the rebels’ ground, the road to Upper Egypt; one, from Thebes north — past the new capital, past the border wall, the road the Hittites would come by.

”One line cuts the grain; one line cuts the nation.” Lu Zhu said. ”We stand between the two lines now.”

”The works of the north,” he went on, ”I have calculated. The border wall was built in the old pharaoh’s time — older than Thebes’s old walls. More than ten breaks, to be patched one by one with stone and mud-brick. The north is cold; winter comes early; rammed earth freezes, and is harder to work than here. But harder still is the material — the north has no stone of its own, and little timber. The building materials must be hauled north from the south, over hundreds of li.”

”Hauling materials is hauling lives.” Mery said. ”But all our carrying power is on the south line.”

”So,” Lu Zhu said, ”from tonight, we keep a two-line account. The south line is a life; the north line is a life. Two lives — neither may be dropped.”

The lamp in the room jumped. Outside, the night wind rattled the torches on the wall-head, as if sighing a long breath for the people of the room.

The people of the city learned the news the next day.

On the war bulletin walls at the four gates, a new notice was pasted. This time, the notice did not say ”peace.”

”The north is in peril.” Those who could read read aloud. ”The Hittites have crossed the border; three forts lost. The court deliberates aid; no decision yet. All things in the city continue as before.”

When the reading was done, a low sound went through the crowd — not crying, not rioting. In the months of the siege, the city’s heart had grown a callus. But in that sound there was something heavier than tears.

”The Hittites.” An old man muttered. ”My grandfather’s grandfather died under a Hittite blade. They... how have they come again?”

”Troubled times.” The man beside him said. ”A wolf in front, a tiger behind. How are we to live through this?”

There were young ones who were not afraid: ”What’s to fear? The border wall is in the north, and we are in the south. Both ends are blocked; the sky cannot fall.”

”The border wall in the north,” someone answered, ”is said to be older than our wall. Our wall was built by the master builder. Who built the wall in the north?”

That question, no one could answer.

At the market, the date sellers, the flatbread sellers, the water carriers — all had changed their talk. Some asked how far the north was from Thebes; some calculated how many days the Hittites would take to march here; some squatted at the foot of the wall, bending their fingers back and forth, as if working a sum that would not come out.

Only the hospital and the granary went on as before. Imset made his rounds as usual; Mery kept his accounts as usual. Lu Zhu said to them: ”The more disorder outside, the less these two places may waver. The hospital is the heart; the granary is the courage. While the heart and the courage hold, the people cannot fall.”

That night, Mery was calculating too.

The night the news entered the city, he went through the granary’s accounts from beginning to end once more. He worked three sums: the first — how much grain the city needed to replenish before winter; the second — how many more runs Meru’s boats could make; the third — the first time he had ever worked it — how much grain the relief army marching north would eat on the road.

”A relief force of thirty thousand,” he said, bent over the table, adding entry after entry, ”marching ten days, is three hundred thousand man-days of grain. And that is without the horse fodder.” He raised his head; his eyes were shot with red. ”Teacher, this war is no longer the business of one city.”

”It has not been for some time.” Lu Zhu said. ”From the day the northern dispatch entered the city, this city has been one piece on a great board. For the piece to live, the board must not be overturned.”

”If the board overturns,” Mery said, ”the grain fails first. The south line fails, and the city dies; the north line fails, and the nation dies. The grain of both lines must be managed by one hand.”

”That hand,” Lu Zhu said, ”is yours.”

Mery was still for a moment.

”When the king’s order comes down,” Lu Zhu said, ”every official granary in Egypt will hang on your account. The city in the south, the army in the north, the capital in the rear — three ledgers, and not one figure may go wrong. From now on, you keep the account as three ledgers.”

Mery said nothing. He took out his small notebook, opened a new page, and wrote three characters at the top of it:

”Three ledgers.”

Under the lamp, his brush moved across the paper with a soft scratch — like a spring silkworm eating a mulberry leaf.

At the foot of the old wall south of the city, several old men were telling old stories.

”The Hittites — when I was a boy, my grandfather told me about them.” A white-bearded old man said. ”In those days, the old pharaoh was still alive. The Hittites crossed the river once, and the border wall drove them back. What drove them back was not the blade — it was the wall. Behind the wall stood the reinforcements of the new capital. That is why the thing the Hittites hate most is the walls of Egypt.”

”And now?” A young man asked. ”Will the wall of today hold them?”

The old man was silent. He looked at the firelight beyond the city, and only after a long while said: ”Whether it holds or not is not in the wall — it is in the men. The men who built that wall in the old days rammed their lives into the earth. And now—” he tilted his chin toward the wall-head, ”—this city has its own such band of men.”

The young man followed his gaze. On the wall-head, under the torches, companies of figures were carrying mud-bricks, back and forth, in the dark. The sound of ramming came over, muffled — like the heartbeat of the city itself.

But Lu Zhu himself did not sleep that night either.

He stood on the wall-head, looking north. North — the night was boundless. He knew that beyond that night, the lamps of the new capital still burned, the West Bank’s granaries still stood full, and farther north, the border wall stood in the wind, with the cold pouring in through its breaks.

”The wall of the north,” he said, low, ”if only it could pass under our hands once...”

He did not finish. Below the wall-head, a rider on a lathered horse came from the direction of the south, straight for the camp gate.

It was the court’s messenger to the pacification camp. He had ridden out of the camp that very night — for no other reason than to ask Horenheb one question, face to face.

And at that hour, in the great tent south of the city, the lamp was burning too.

Horenheb sat before the table, reading the northern dispatch for the fourth time. At the corner of the table lay the reply he had drafted for the court — half written, the brush resting on the paper, the ink long since dried.

”General,” the old centurion came in with a bowl of hot water, ”dawn is near. Close your eyes a while.”

”I can’t sleep.” Horenheb said. He took up the water, did not drink, and set it down again. ”I have guarded the border for thirty years. The wolves of the west, I know. The tiger of the north, I know. All these years, I have said every day: the north’s wall must be repaired, repaired by the western line’s methods. No one listened. Now the tiger has come, and the wall is broken.”

”Then... can the north still be saved?”

”It can be saved.” Horenheb said. ”Three years on the western line, I raised walls stone by stone. I can raise the north’s wall too. But raising a wall needs men, materials, and time. And these three—” he pointed at the two red flags on the sand table, ”—are all held fast by this city.”

He stood up and walked to the tent’s mouth. The sky to the north was turning gray.

”Pass the order.” He said. ”Tomorrow morning, all centurions and above, to my tent for council.”

At first light, the parade ground of the south camp was full — the ranks stretching from the muster posts to the well, the men standing in the cold with their breath smoking, the centurions in front. Word of the northern dispatch had run through the camp before dawn, and every man who could stand had come.

Every officer of centurion rank and above had come. Horenheb stood on the reviewing platform and read the northern dispatch aloud, exactly as it was written. When he had finished, he flung the sheepskin onto the platform and said:

”Everyone speaks. How do we fight?” He asked it flatly, the way a man asks a question he has already answered for himself — but the answering, he knew, belonged to the men who would do the fighting.

The ground was still for a moment — the stillness of men who have been waiting to hear the question spoken aloud. Then a centurion spoke first, his voice carrying over the ranks: ”General — pacify Thebes first! The grain inside the city will not last the winter. Starve them out, then march the whole army north — there will still be time! The city has held three months; it can hold three more. And when it falls, we march with the whole army behind us!”

”Time?” Another centurion laughed coldly, the laugh cutting across the first man’s enthusiasm. ”Can the northern wall wait while we starve out a city? Every day we sit here, the Hittites are piling their rams against a wall with a dozen breaks in it. By the time Thebes falls, the Hittites will be celebrating the new year inside the border wall — and the grain we saved will feed a conquered country!”

”Then what do you say we do? Draw troops north now — who watches the thirty thousand rebels outside the city? They turn around, charge our camp, and the whole south line collapses!”

”Then hold both ends!” A third voice shouted — a big centurion from the river brigade, his voice carrying over the ground — and for a moment there was a chorus of agreement, the chorus of men who want an answer that does not cost anything. The chorus died quickly, because every man in it knew the cost.

”Where do the men come from? Where does the grain come from?” The question cut the chorus short — it was the old quartermaster, who had been silent until then, and whose silence had weight. The argument went around again, louder this time — the way an argument goes around when every answer has been given and none has satisfied, and the ground grew dusty with the pacing of it.

On the parade ground, the argument boiled like a pot of porridge — voices overlapping, hands gesturing, the crowd splitting into knots of agreement and dissent. Horenheb stood without a word, his hands clasped behind his back, letting the noise run its course. When the voices had died down, and the last echo of the argument had settled in the dust, he spoke:

”Stop arguing.” Horenheb’s voice cut across the noise — not loud, but with the weight of a man who had carried the question through a sleepless night, walking the camp’s perimeter until the stars went out, weighing each answer against the next. The arguing stopped, the way arguing stops when a man who does not raise his voice finally speaks. ”Everything you’ve said, I thought through in the night — I walked this ground until the stars went out, weighing each of your answers against the next. Split the army, and the city cannot be surrounded; don’t split it, and the border cannot be held. A dilemma.” He paused, and the pause had the weight of a decision already made. ”But inside every dilemma there is an order. The north is the nation’s door. Break the door, and the people become a conquered people. Thebes is a thief in the house. However fierce the thief, it is still a matter of the household. So—”

”General!” A centurion broke in, alarmed. ”You mean to draw troops north?”

”I draw nothing.” Horenheb said, and the words came down on the parade ground like a stone falling into still water. ”If I drew, this city could not live. The people of this city have trusted our smoke for three months. It cannot be that, at the end, they watch the smoke break.”

”Then the north—”

”The north — let the men go north who are meant to go north.” Horenheb said, and the sentence had the finality of a door closing. ”The court’s edict is on the road — I have seen the dust of its messenger, and I know the shape of what it carries. What we can do is fight the southern war harder. ”The court’s edict is on the road — I have seen the dust of its messenger. What we can do is fight the southern war harder. ”The court’s edict is on the road. What we can do is fight the southern war harder. Fight it so hard that the rebels have no free hand — that is how we help the north.”

He raised his head, and his gaze crossed every face on the ground — the faces of men who had come expecting an order and were being given a strategy instead. ”From today, the nights south of the city grow livelier. Torches as before; the smoke reports gain one more a day. One small raid every three days, one great raid every five. We are not harrying their men — we are harrying their sleep. When they cannot sleep sound, they have no strength to think of other things. And—” he paused, ”the West Bank’s village granaries, from tomorrow, send a third more grain south. The extra is not for us to eat. It is stored. Stored until next spring, when the northern relief army comes back — and this is the grain it will eat.”

”The general thinks far.” The old centurion said, low — the old man of the western line, who had seen the general think his way through sandstorms and ambushes, and knew the look of a man planning a season ahead. The look was on Horenheb’s face now, and the old centurion had seen it before, and it had never once been wrong.

”Not far.” Horenheb said. ”A two-front war is fought on thinking — on the grain that is counted before it is sowed, on the wall that is planned before it is dug, on the men who are kept alive by both. The one who thinks farther is the one who holds out longer. And we have held this line long enough to know how it is done — and how it must be done again.”

He looked up at the sky. It was fully light — the light of a working day, the light in which the camp would load its carts and set its watches and carry on. The men on the ground were still standing; no one had moved. They had come to the parade ground expecting to hear how the war would be fought, and they had heard something larger: that the war had become two wars, and that their general intended to fight both from the ground they stood on.

And inside Thebes, Lu Zhu held a council too — smaller, quieter, held in the same courtyard where the water plan and the grain plan had been decided in the weeks before. The same stone table; a heavier weight laid on it.

The council met in the granary’s back courtyard, the same courtyard where the water plan had been decided and the grain plan had been born — the courtyard that had become, in the months of the siege, the city’s war room. There were few of them: Lu Zhu, Kamon, Mery, Imset, the chief officiant, the adjutant — the men who between them held the city’s walls, its grain, its sicknesses, and its hearts. Lu Zhu told them the business of the north — the three forts, the two client states, the governor’s plea — and then spread a sheet of white paper on the stone table. It was a rough map of the northern border he had drawn through the night, working by the lamp until his eyes burned: the border wall running along the hills, the passes marked with their widths, the grain roads with their way-stations, the water sources with the distances between them. Each one had been set down from what he had heard, seen, and calculated — the map of a place he had never visited, built the way he built everything, from the numbers and the ground reports and the patient arithmetic of men who cannot afford to be wrong.

”The wall of the north, I have worked through three times — once for the materials, once for the ground, once for the men who will work it.” Lu Zhu said. ”The danger is not the breaks. It is the ground. The border wall stands on hill country; the earth is frozen ground — hard in winter, soft at the thaw. The ramming must use the northern straw; the northern straw is short, and lacks toughness. So the northern wall must be built differently from the southern — wider, lower, and capped. Wide, and the ram cannot knock it over; low, and the wind cannot tear it; capped, and rain and snow cannot soak in.”

”These things,” Kamon said, ”when did you work them out?”

”After the western line.” Lu Zhu said. ”General Horen wrote back once — that the northern wall would be needed one day. I kept it in mind.”

He paused — the pause of a man turning a calculation over once more before he speaks it — and said: ”Now, the north lacks three things: materials, men, time. Materials — the new capital’s stores have them. Men — the guilds’ craftsmen can be drawn. Time—” he stopped, ”time depends on how the court divides the army.”

”You mean,” Imset said, and his voice was the careful voice of a man checking the edges of a decision before it is made, ”to send our people north, to build the wall?”

”In two groups.” Lu Zhu said. ”One group stays in the city and keeps guarding. One group goes north with the relief army, to build the border wall. Seb’s three years on the western line taught him fortification. With General Horen, he is worth more than he is here.”

”Seb is still a boy.” Kamon said — the boy’s old master, the man who had watched Seb grow from a burned village’s orphan into the builder of sixteen towers.

”In fortification,” Lu Zhu said, ”a man’s age is not counted in years, but in the roads he has walked. He has walked enough — the western line’s sand, the south line’s ditches, the ground under every tower he raised. Age is for the harvest; for the wall, what matters is the hand.”

The room was silent — the silence of men measuring the size of a thing they had just been shown. Through the window, the light of day was brightening, whitening the rough map Lu Zhu had drawn, and the lines of the northern wall stood out in the growing light like the bones of a thing that would have to be built.

When the council broke up, the chief officiant lingered — the way a man lingers when he has something to say that he did not want to say in front of the others.

”Master Builder,” he said, ”the people of the city will learn of the north soon enough. What I fear is this — they will know it in their heads, but their hearts will follow the northern wind, and scatter.”

”So the war bulletin keeps going up.” Lu Zhu said, and the decision came out the way his decisions came out — flat, and final, and grounded in what he had learned from the water shortage and the grain rumors. ”Whatever the north is doing — as much as we know, that much we write. Writing the truth is better than hiding it. A heart is like cloth — the more you smother it, the more it wrinkles; the more you air it, the firmer it stays.”

”Aired too long, and it can also be scorched.” The chief officiant said — the priest who had seen the city’s faith turn, and turn back, and knew the fragility of the thing they were both working on.

”Scorched,” Lu Zhu said, ”and there is the hospital, and there is you. In this city, we lack neither the healers of the heart nor the healers of the body.”

The chief officiant nodded, and said no more. At the door he turned back: ”Tonight, I’ll have the night patrol walk an extra round. Once this news enters the city, there will be people who cannot sleep.”

”Walk.” Lu Zhu said. ”When the lamps burn, sleep comes — and a city that sleeps is a city that can fight in the morning. A city that cannot sleep is a city that is already losing.”

The chief officiant went out, and the door closed softly behind him.

That night, the city’s lamps burned longer than usual, sure enough — the lamps of the lanes that usually went out at the second watch still glowing at the third, the light showing through the door cracks in thin lines. A city does not sleep well on the night it learns the shape of the war beyond its own walls.

The granary, the hospital, the transfer depot, the four gates, the wall-head — every place that ought to burn a lamp, not one went dark; the lamps stood through the night the way the wall stood through the siege, each one a small stone in the same rampart. The chief officiant’s night patrol walked from lane head to lane end, and the light of their lanterns joined into a line — as if the city had been wrapped in another, softer wall.

And in the rebels’ great camp north of the city, Nekhem had received the news from the north as well — the same news, by a different road, and read by a different hand.

Not an urgent dispatch — a secret letter slipped in along the trade routes, folded small, the writing cramped, the seal an ordinary merchant’s seal. The letter was short, only a few lines — but the few lines had crossed the whole country to reach him. Nekhem read it through, and read it a second time, his eyes moving down the lines without hurry. Then he slowly folded it, and held it to the lamp. The flame licked the sheepskin; the smoke rose in a thin thread, like a black line growing upward, and the letter curled and blackened and fell to ash in the dish.

”They have come.” He said.

In the tent, the man in white and Panhesy were both present — Panhesy standing by the sand table, the man in white kneeling in the corner. Panhesy’s eyes lit up at once, the light of a man who has been waiting for a door to open: ”High Priest! The Hittites have moved?”

”They have moved.” Nekhem said. ”Crossed the river. Broken the forts. Egypt’s north is on fire.”

”Then we—” Panhesy rubbed his hands, ”—should press the attack! The moment the north tightens, the court’s troops must split. Split, and the south line loosens a measure. Loosen a measure, and our chance grows a measure!”

”Pressing is not attacking.” Nekhem said, and his voice was level, the level of a man correcting a child who has run ahead — and Panhesy, who had run ahead of the High Priest once before and been corrected the same way, stopped and listened. ”Attacking is feeding men to the wall — and the wall has eaten enough of our men already. What I want is for the people inside the city to see us every day. See our banners, hear our drums, count their own grain — thinner by the day, the way a man counts the coals in a dying fire. The news of the north will break them for us.” What I want is for the people inside the city to see us every day. See our banners, hear our drums, count their own grain — thinner by the day. The news of the north will break them for us.”

He stood up and walked to the tent’s mouth — the mouth that faced north, toward the fire that was burning beyond the border. The north wind came in, whipping his white robe, and he stood in it without moving, the way he had stood in a hundred winds.

”Pass the order.” He said. ”From tomorrow, the camp beyond the city: more guards by day, more fires by night. Let the people of the city see it — the relief army they are waiting for is all in the north now.”

”Yes!” Panhesy answered, loud and sharp.

The man in white did not leave. He knelt where he was, the lamp casting his shadow long across the tent floor, and when Panhesy had gone out, he asked, low — the question he had been carrying since the letter was read: ”High Priest — can the Hittites be trusted?”

Nekhem looked back at him. In that look there was no emotion — only a very deep weariness.

”They cannot.” He said, and the weariness in his voice was the weariness of a man who has done business with wolves before. ”They are a pack of wolves waiting to tear at meat. But a wolf bites first at the largest sheep in the pen — it does not waste its teeth on the flock’s stragglers while the big one still stands.” He paused. ”The court of Egypt is that sheep. When the wolf has its teeth in the sheep’s throat, the sheep will have no strength left to watch us — and we will have the time to win back the hearts of this city.”

”And after they are won back?”

”The things after,” Nekhem said, ”we will speak of after.”

He turned back to his desk. The old scripture was still spread on it. He sat down, his fingers on the scroll — but he was not reading. His gaze passed through the tent’s peak, and rested somewhere very far away.

”The fire in the north,” he said suddenly, ”the day it burns high, the city’s smoke signals will not carry the same weight. Do you believe me?”

”The High Priest means—”

”The smoke reports peace.” Nekhem said, and he said it slowly, the way a man says a thing he has been turning in his mind for a long time. ”When peace lasts long enough, people come to trust the smoke — they wake and see the column standing in the morning air, and they think: the wall is there, so we are safe. But a column of smoke only proves that the wall still stands. It cannot prove that Egypt still stands — and Egypt is what the smoke is supposed to be standing for. When the bad news of the north enters the city, one piece after another—” he said slowly, ”the smoke will still be straight. But the hearts will lean.”

”So we help the bad news reach the city sooner?”

”No.” Nekhem said. ”Bad news walks faster than our men. What we must do is keep the city’s smoke from scattering too fast. Even when the hearts lean, they must keep one breath. While one breath remains, this city is worth taking back.”

And at that hour, the court’s messenger was riding south through the night.

In his breast lay two documents. One was a secret order for Horenheb; the other was for Lu Zhu inside Thebes — the king’s command that the master builder Imhotep assemble the lists of craftsmen and materials for repairing the northern wall, and report them to the court within three days.

The hoofbeats struck the official road, fast and urgent. On either side, the fields lay white in the moonlight, as if spread with frost.

Winter had come.

The king’s order entered the city two days later — two days in which the city talked, and worked, and waited, and in which the north drew a little nearer in every telling.

The courier reached the south camp first, and handed the secret order to Horenheb — the order that made the general of the south also the coordinator of the north, two commands on one pair of shoulders. Then he changed to a small boat, and in the middle of the night came in through the water gate west of the city — the same gate, the same dark, through which the city had been won and the medicine had been carried, and now the king’s order.

On the road, the courier had seen a good deal. He had seen the grain carts lined up half a li outside the West Bank’s village granaries; seen the fields along the official road, the harvest gathered, only the stubble left; seen refugees, old and young, moving south, helping one another along. He asked them where they were going. An old man said: ”Where? Wherever there is a wall, that is where we go.”

Lu Zhu received him in the granary’s back courtyard, the lamp already burning though the night was young. The courier was in his forties, dusty from the road, his lips cracked with dryness, his boots worn through at the heels — the look of a man who has ridden the length of a country without once slowing. When he saw Lu Zhu, he drank a bowl of water first, and only then drew the king’s order from his breast and handed it over with both hands:

”Master Builder — the king’s order.” The courier’s voice was hoarse from the road, and he read the essentials from memory, the way a man does who has carried them for days. ”The north is hard pressed; the border wall awaits repair. The court commands you: within three days, produce the list of craftsmen and the list of materials for the northern repair. The men, drawn from the guilds; the materials, drawn from the new capital’s stores. Numbers, routes, deadlines — every item written plainly. When it is written, I carry it back as it is.”

Lu Zhu took the order and read it twice — once for the words, once for the weight between them. The order was written in the court’s formal hand, but the urgency of the north came through it like a smell of smoke. When he had read it, he said:

”The men, I provide. The material list, I write. But one thing must be said first, for the court to hear — repairing the north means moving the western line’s methods onto the northern frozen ground. Whether the move succeeds is half in the men, and half in heaven. The numbers on my list are the numbers the western line worked out through three years of trial. They will not be wrong.”

”Good.” The courier said, and for the first time since he had ridden in — through the dust and the cold and the two sleepless nights — something in his shoulders relaxed. ”With that sentence from you, this journey of mine was not wasted.”

The courier rested in the city for half a day. He could have rested longer — the bed was warm, the city was quiet — but he said the north could not wait, and he meant it. In that half day he went to the four gates, and looked at the wall, running his hand along the new brick where the repairs had bitten into the old. He looked at the transfer depot with its three ledgers, and sat a while in the hospital, where the wounded looked at him with the look of men who want news and do not dare ask for it. When he left, he said to Lu Zhu: ”Master Builder, on this journey from north to south, I have seen cities in disorder, and cities at peace. Only this Thebes is both disordered and peaceful at once. The disorder is outside; the peace is within. And this peace — you and your people have rammed it into place, day by day.”

”Defending a city is not the work of one day.” Lu Zhu said. ”The words you carry back — carry that one.”

That night, Lu Zhu called Kamon, Old Montu, and Young Nubu together.

”The guild’s rolls, Kamon knows best.” Lu Zhu said. ”The men going north must have both trades in them: one hand stone, one hand ramming. Not too old — the northern winter would break the old. Choose forty. Who goes and who stays, you decide.”

”Forty.” Kamon mused, the number settling in his mouth like a stone he was testing. ”Twenty stonemasons, fifteen rammers, five carpenters — and every one of them a man who has worked through a winter, because the north will test them like nothing the guild has seen. I’ll draw the list from the guilds tomorrow morning.”

”Seb’s name,” Lu Zhu said, ”I have written in. Let him ask General Horen, and go north with the relief army.”

”With Seb gone,” Kamon said, ”who watches the works south of the city?”

”The works south of the city are already formed.” Lu Zhu said. ”Ditch, wall, towers — all standing. What remains is guarding, not building. Seb’s gift is in the building. And the north is short of exactly that.”

Kamon said no more. He squatted down and knocked his knuckles once against the stone floor — as if knocking on a wall he could not see, testing it, the way he had tested a thousand walls. The knock was solid. He stood up, and the matter was settled.

The notice of the chosen men was posted at the material yard the next day — a single sheet of sheepskin nailed to the gate post, the names written in Kamon’s own hand, large enough to read from the back of the crowd. The news ran through the lanes before the ink was dry; the men whose names were on it found out from their neighbors, and the men whose names were not on it found out the same way.

Before the sky was light, the yard was full — the lanterns still burning at the gate, the men arriving in the dark. Men of the guilds, men of the craftsmen’s village, and men who had heard along the road and come in from outside the city, their tools over their shoulders, their breath smoking in the cold. Kamon stood on a stone block and read out the names one by one. Those who were named, stepped forward; those who were not, stood watching with hungry eyes. When the forty names were read, Kamon folded the list and said: ”Those going north — go home and pack. Those staying — back to the wall as before.”

”Master!” A voice called from the crowd — a young voice, urgent, cutting across the quiet that had followed the reading of the names. ”I want to go north too!”

”If you go,” Kamon said, ”who holds this city for you?” The question fell into the yard and the yard went quiet around it. He paused, and his voice was not hard — it was the voice of a man who had chosen, and was asking the young man to choose. ”The wall in the north is a wall. The wall in the south is a wall too. Guard either one, and you are prolonging this nation’s life.”

The crowd went quiet — the quiet of men weighing the two halves of the sentence. After a moment, an old stonemason who had been chosen — a man of sixty, his hands cracked with lime, his shoulders square under his coat — said: ”Master Kamon, I’ve built walls in Thebes for half my life, and this is my first time going north. The north is cold, I hear. Cold I don’t fear — what I fear is the cold making the mud-bricks misbehave.”

”The mud-bricks,” Kamon said, ”Lu Zhu has written the method in the material list — the proportions, the drying times, the capping layers. When you reach the north, work by the list. What the list can’t do, try on the spot. What you can’t work out, send word back. The wall of this city is your road home.”

The old stonemason nodded. He drew his stone chisel from his belt — the blade worn by forty years, the handle dark with his own hand’s oil — weighed it in his palm, and said: ”Then this chisel goes north with me. It has dressed stone in Thebes and stone in the new capital. The north’s stone will be the third place it works, and it has never once refused a stone.”

The material list took Lu Zhu an entire night.

On the sheepskin, line after line, the writing grew denser — the sheepskin was a good one, smooth and pale, and by dawn it was covered from edge to edge. The lines ran: so many loads of lime, so many bundles of chopped straw, so many lengths of timber, so many mud-brick molds, so many sets of ramming tools. Behind each item, a number, and behind the number, a note — which thing was used first, which could wait, which the north could supply locally, which must be hauled from the south.

While he wrote the list, he reasoned it out with Kamon as he went. When he reached the lime, he said: ”The northern wall stands by a river full of fog — the fog rolls in off the water every evening and lies on the wall until noon. The stone joints and the earth walls both drink the damp, and damp is a wall’s slow death. Lime must go, and in loads — not in handfuls. Without it, the wall goes up, and one fog turns it to powder; with it, the wall drinks the fog and holds.” When he reached the straw, he said: ”The northern grass has short stalks and not enough toughness — it binds the earth the way a short rope binds a load, always slipping. The tempering straw for the ramming must be the south’s long-stalked grass, the kind we cut from the river flats. Press it tight on the road, and keep the rain off it — a wet bundle rots from the middle out. Straw that rots is a handful of mud, and mud has never held a wall.” When he reached the timber, he paused: ”The north has no trees. The wall’s arrow boards, scaffolding, stakes — all of it must be drawn from the new capital’s timber yard. This item eats the most carts.”

Kamon sat beside him, listening the way he listened to everything about walls — with his whole attention, the way a man listens to a cracked beam. At that, he put in: ”Carts eat roads. Roads eat grain. This trip north — the food eaten on the road has to be counted in.”

”It is counted.” Lu Zhu said. ”Behind every item, I have added half a tenth for loss in transit. That half-tenth is what the road eats.”

He wrote until the sky was nearly light — the lamp burning down, the wick trimmed twice, the brush moving in the small even strokes of a man who has learned to write the truth the first time. The ink had been ground twice; the lamp oil had been refilled once. Then he set down the brush and rubbed his eyes, and the marks of the night lay on his face — the marks of a man who has spent a night writing promises for a wall he will never see. On the last page of the list, he wrote two lines in small characters:

”The frozen earth of the north: mix plant ash into the ramming earth. Ash against the frost — an old method, put to new use.”

”The work must be reckoned by completion before the winter solstice. After the solstice, the earth freezes three feet deep; to move it again, one must wait for the thaw.”

Mery came in to bring lamp oil, and saw the list spread over half the room — the pages laid out in rows, the numbers running down them like the columns of a ledger. He picked up a page and read it for a long time, his finger moving down the items, and then said: ”Teacher, this list of yours is finer than my grain accounts. There are numbers in it I would have to think twice to understand.”

”Grain accounts manage lives; material lists manage the nation.” Lu Zhu said. ”Every day the northern wall stands one day longer, the southern city breathes one day more.”

Three days later, the courier set out on the road back, carrying the list of men and the list of materials — the two lists that would travel north with the army, and become, on the frozen ground beyond the passes, the difference between a wall and a gap.

Before he left, he stood at the water gate and looked back once into the city. The wall stood black in the dark; the torches along its head burned one after another, like a row of open eyes.

”Master Builder,” he said, ”when I come back, I will bring the court’s answer.”

”I will be waiting.” Lu Zhu said. ”And ask the court to be quick. The sky of the north does not wait for men.”

The courier boarded the boat and was gone. The oars were very soft, melting into the night, little by little.

The talk in the city had not stopped in all these days — the city had learned, in the months of the siege, to talk about everything, because talking was the one thing the siege could not stop.

Before the war bulletin wall, the crowd pressed in every day. The notice was written with restraint, but the accounts in men’s hearts were reckoned more harshly than any notice. Old men bent their fingers, counting: how many days from the north to the new capital, how many rivers the Hittites would have to cross once they reached the border wall. The more they counted, the less they could sleep.

”Tell me,” a woman at the well said to another, the buckets waiting in a row at their feet, ”if the north truly breaks through, can this city of ours still hold? I hear the Hittites are not like the rebels. The rebels want the city; the Hittites want the whole country.”

”It holds.” The other woman said. ”The city has the master builder; it has General Horen; it has a full wall of men. When the sky falls, it hits the ground outside the city first.”

”But outside the city — thirty thousand rebels surrounding us. And then a hundred thousand Hittites from the north...”

”Still no fear.” The woman set her bucket down hard on the well-head, the water slopping over the rim, and no one minded the spill. ”This city has not fallen in three months. Three months is three thousand people carrying it on their backs — carrying the wall, the grain, the wells, the nights. Bring a hundred thousand more — they still hit this wall first, and this wall has not once moved for anyone.”

The people at the well laughed. In the laughter there was hardiness, and a fear that only dared show itself at night.

In the army, they argued too.

Around the campfires south of the city, the soldiers squatted in twos and threes. One said: ”Put down the rebellion in the city first, then march north. Even if the nation’s door is broken, clear the thief from the house first.” Another said: ”The door matters more. The people of the north are born of fathers and mothers too. While we sit here surrounding, someone has to go stand in the north.” They argued back and forth, and no answer satisfied both. An old soldier grew tired of it — he had heard the argument three times in three nights, and the words had worn thin as a worn rope. He poked the fire with a stick of firewood, the sparks leaping, and said:

”Stop arguing, all of you. However the high command decides, that’s how we fight. Hold the south — hold it to the death. Move to the north — hold the north up. A soldier obeys.”

The fire crackled once; sparks leaped up and scattered into the night, like a swarm of tiny fireflies.

And on the West Bank, Meru heard the news two days later — heard it the way news travels among men who live on the water: half by the messenger’s mouth, half by the feel of the river, which had changed its temper with the news. He heard it standing on his own dock, among his own boats, and he heard it the way a merchant hears a change in the price of grain: at once, and completely, and with the calculation already beginning in his head.

That day he was squatting at the dock, checking the boats. The northern messenger, passing through the West Bank, stopped to ask the granary hands for water, and said a few words. Meru heard them; he took the pipe from his mouth and asked: ”The north — it has truly come to war?”

”It has.” The messenger said. ”The Hittites crossed the river. The border wall — more than a dozen breaks.”

Meru asked no more. He squatted at the dock, knocking his pipe against his boot sole again and again, and knocked it for a long while. Then he said suddenly: ”The war in the south is not finished, and the war in the north is here. These days—” he paused, ”these days, the goods keep growing more numerous.”

”Merchant,” Old Camel sidled over, ”can our boats keep up?”

”Keep up or not, they must run.” Meru said. ”The city in the south needs grain and medicine; the army in the north needs materials and fodder. You’ll see — within days, the court’s order will come down: half the guild’s boats south, half north. When that day comes, it will be two carrying-poles on one pair of shoulders.”

”Then we need more boats, more men.”

”Add them.” Meru said. ”Call in every man on the West Bank who knows water — the fishermen, the ferrymen, the boys who grew up poling through the reeds. Double the wages; pay death-money for the fallen; and say nothing about the risk, because the risk is in the price.” He stood up, looking at the figures moving on the river — the boats coming and going, the oars flashing — and his voice was level when he said: ”In half a lifetime of trading, this is the first time I’ve felt I didn’t have enough boats.”

In the hospital, the news of the north came in on the wind.

The wounded lay on the reed mats, talking in twos and threes. A soldier who had fled the north — one of the first wounded to fall back — became the center of their questions. His wound was in the leg, but he spoke clearly: ”I held the wall in the north. It is a good wall — it just had no one to repair it. When the Hittites came, they struck the wall first, then the men. Every block of wall that fell, a piece of the heart went cold with it.”

”And you...” someone asked.

”We fell back.” The soldier said. ”If we hadn’t, we’d all have been left there. This leg of mine was bitten by a stray arrow during the retreat.”

The room was quiet for a little while — the quiet of men looking at a leg that said more than any dispatch. Imset was changing the soldier’s dressing, unwinding the old cloth, the wound beneath it red and angry, the edges of it closing slowly; halfway through, he said: ”Fallen back — you can go back. A wall that fell — can be raised again. While a man lives, there is always a return.”

”Priest,” the soldier asked, ”do you think the north can still be held?”

”Whether it holds,” Imset said, ”depends on how many people are willing to go north. You fell back in order to go back. When enough people go back, the wall stands again.”

The soldier said nothing. He looked at his wounded leg, and after a long time said, low: ”When this leg of mine heals... I will go back.”

The city’s preparations were quietly being increased.

Lu Zhu had three more empty houses torn down — the beams cut into arrow boards, the rafters shaped into the ”soft buffers” that could be hung over the wall to deaden the ram’s blows, the brick and tile stacked on the wall-head as rolling stones. Nothing that could become a defense was left to become dust; the city was taking itself apart in one place to put itself together in another. Firewood: half the granary’s heating supply was set aside and dried for use. Arrows: the adjutant’s men re-whetted the heads of the old arrows. Even the buckets at the wells were increased by twenty — so that if the wall-head caught fire, there would be water near at hand.

”This city,” Lu Zhu said to Kamon, standing at the wall-head with the wind moving their coats, ”is from now on a nail driven between two lines. For a nail to be hard, its own foundations must first be rammed firmer than anyone else’s.”

”However hard the nail,” Kamon said, ”someone still has to drive it.”

”The man who drives it will come.” Lu Zhu said — and the certainty in his voice was not hope; it was the certainty of a man who has read the direction of the war, and knows the war is coming to him. ”The moment the northern relief army arrives, the siege of the south must break, sooner or later — a siege cannot outlast two armies. What we must do is make this nail hold until that day. And a nail that holds is a nail that has been driven straight, and deep, and often.”

Horenheb spent those two nights sleeping before the campaign map in his tent — if it could be called sleeping. He lay on the cot with the map before him and the lamp burning low, waking at every change of the wind, his eyes going first to the map, to the two lines of charcoal that ran across Egypt.

The map’s drawing of Egypt was rough — the provinces sketched in, the rivers drawn as single lines, the cities as dots — but the two lines of war, north and south, he had traced in clear charcoal, so that the map showed not a country but a decision. He stood before it, one hand on his sword, the other moving slowly across the map. When it reached Thebes, he stopped; when it reached the north, he stopped again.

”General,” Seb came in softly, ”you sent for me?”

”Your matter is settled.” Horenheb said. ”Your name is on Lu Zhu’s list. You go north with the relief army, to build the border wall.”

Seb’s eyes lit up at once — the light of a boy who has been given the road he has been wanting, the road north, the road his teacher had walked before him.

”I...” he said, ”when do I leave?”

”The moment the king’s order comes.” Horenheb said. ”Before you go, hand over the works south of the city to the man who takes your place. How deep the ditches, how high the walls, how the towers take their turns — hand over every one of them, clearly.”

”Yes.” Seb said.

The afternoon of the handover, Seb walked the whole south line — the full length of it, from the river to the earthen ridge, his feet finding every stretch he had dug and rammed and measured in the months since the works began. He walked it the way a man walks a field he has sown, and is leaving.

He measured the main ditch first — still the old figures, the numbers he had set down himself in the first days: fifteen feet wide, eight feet deep, the walls straight, the bottom level. He had measured it when it was a line of scratches on the ground; he measured it now that it was a work of war, and the numbers had not changed by a hand’s breadth. Then he climbed all ten towers, testing each one: the posts not leaning, the ladders not loose, the words on the whitewashed boards still legible. At last he stood on the slope, looking north. North was the rebels’ camp. South was the line he had dug out, spade by spade, over these months.

”This line,” he said to the squad leader taking over — an old man of the western line, his face carved by the same winds that had carved Seb’s — ”is not a dead thing. In drought, the ditch walls flake; splash them and pack them firm. In heavy rain, the tower bases soften; add earth and pack it. A survey every ten days, and the survey’s record goes on the whitewashed boards.”

The squad leader was an old man from the western line; he nodded at every sentence. When it was done, he said: ”Seb, set your heart at ease. This line is your drawing; we hold it by your plan.”

”Not by my plan.” Seb said. ”By the line itself — a line does not care whose plan it was drawn from. It only cares whether it holds.”

That night, Seb did not sleep. He went through the drawings he had made, from beginning to end — the first rough sketches of the western line, the careful measured plans of the south, the corrections written in the margins in his own hand. He sorted them: the western line’s sixteen towers, the south line’s ten, and the ones he had revised, patched, and thrown away in these months. He sorted them until the small hours; what was useful he rolled into one bundle, wrapped in three layers of oilcloth. When it was wrapped, he wrote three characters on the cloth:

”Take north.”

The night before the departure, Seb went to the great tent once more. The lamp was still burning; Horenheb was still standing before the map.

”General — is the northern wall truly so hard to build?” He asked, the question that had been pressing at him since the name went on the list.

”Hard.” Horenheb said, and the single word carried the weight of everything he knew about the north. ”The western line is sand country — dig a ditch, raise a wall, the earth does what you tell it. The north is frozen ground. In winter, the earth freezes harder than stone; the rammer’s blow leaves only a white mark. That is why the northern wall has always been built of dressed stone. But dressed stone must be hauled from the quarries — hundreds of li, and every cart of stone costs half a cart of lives.”

”Then the mud-brick...”

”Mud-brick will not stand a northern winter.” Horenheb said. ”Which is why I am sending you. What your teacher taught you is building walls of earth and straw. The northern wall needs a different set of bones. How to change it — when you get there, you will look for yourself, and try for yourself.”

Seb listened slowly, sentence by sentence, as if driving nails into his heart.

”Rest easy, General.” He said. ”On the western line, I started from a stretch of sand — nothing but sand and a roll of drawings and a teacher’s instructions in my head — and tried my way through, one tower at a time, until the sand held sixteen of them. The frozen ground of the north will get the same trying.”

”Good.” Horenheb said, and for a moment — a moment that the torchlight caught and held — the old general looked at the young builder the way a man looks at the next generation of his own trade. ”The sand of the western line gave us sixteen towers. For the frozen ground of the north, I will be waiting to see your towers too.”

Beyond the city, the rebels’ camp had been lighting up early in these days — the fires coming on before the sun was fully down, as if the camp were trying to hold the daylight a little longer by force.

Before the dark was full, the camp’s torches were all burning. Not patrol torches — deliberate torches: row after row of firelight below the wall, reddening half the sky. The men on the wall could see it plainly: this was fire lit to be seen.

”Who are they showing it to?” A young sentry on the wall asked.

”To us.” The old soldier beside him said. ”So that we see how many they are, how bright their fires. This fire is not burning firewood. It is burning hearts.”

”Then we—”

”We light ours too.” The old soldier said, and his voice was the voice of a man who has been looked at by worse things than torches — by Libyans’ arrows, by the sandstorms of the western line, by the knowledge that the wall behind him was the last wall. ”They light ten thousand; we light ten thousand and one. The wall of this city is not afraid of being looked at — a wall that fears the looking is a wall that is already falling.”

That night, the torches on the wall-head were indeed doubled. The firelight faced the firelight across the open ground, and the space between them was lit bright as day.

The firelight also lit the days of the rebels beyond the city.

Three days after the order to increase the fires, the camp had burned a tenday’s worth of firewood in one. The soldiers had to be up before dawn, standing by the fire pits, two watches at a stretch. When the north wind rose, the fire roasted their chests and the wind froze their backs — warm in front, cold behind, shivering all over. Someone swore, low: ”Is this war or a festival? The torches burn brighter than a temple fair.” They cursed, but the High Priest’s order, no one dared disobey.

When Panhesy walked the camp, he sensed the soldiers’ impatience too. He stood by a fire pit and heard two soldiers whispering: ”If the north truly goes to war, will the High Priest join hands with the Hittites? Then what are we?” ”What are we? Torches. Stuck up by day, lit by night, for people to look at.”

Panhesy did not lose his temper — the temper had been spent on the officers of the attack, weeks ago, and what remained was the flat watchfulness of a man who knows his own men are slipping. He went back to his tent and said to his orderly: ”The increase of the fires cannot stop.” Panhesy said, the order coming out flat, the way orders come out when the man giving them does not believe in them any more than the men receiving them. ”A few complaints from the men are the cold talking, not rebellion. But watch them — complaints are one thing; if any man throws his torch on the ground, it’s the article of war for him. The torch is the order; the order is the High Priest.”

The orderly acknowledged, and went out, the tent flap falling behind him. Panhesy poured himself a bowl of cold water and drank it down at one go, the water running down his chin, and he did not wipe it — the cold of it was the only clean thing he had felt all day. In his own heart he knew: this fire was lit for the city to see — and also for their own men to see. A fire lit to be seen is a fire that is not burning for warmth; and the men standing around it knew the difference, the way men know the difference between a hearth and a stage. The more people looked at it, the fewer believed in it — and Panhesy, who had spent his life reading the faces of soldiers, could read the disbelief spreading through the ranks like a stain.

And it was in this firelight that the court’s messenger came south a second time.

This time he did not take the official road; he took the small roads of the West Bank. At the end of the small roads stood the south camp. At the camp’s gate, Horenheb stood in full armor, and behind him, on the reviewing platform, the torches stood in neat ranks.

”General,” the messenger dismounted, ”the king’s order.”

”Read it.” Horenheb said.

The messenger unrolled the yellow silk and read it aloud, word by word, by the firelight. The order was not long, but every sentence was heavy as a hammer: the northern relief army advances on three roads — two-tenths of the new capital’s garrison; three-tenths of the West Bank’s militia; half of the western line’s standing force. The relief army goes north: first steady the border wall, then plan the recovery. Horenheb is ordered to hold both the command of the southern pacification and the coordination of the northern aid.

When the reading was done, the messenger folded the silk — the folds falling into place, the yellow cloth creasing along its old lines, the characters vanishing into the creases — and offered it with both hands, the way a man offers a thing that carries weight beyond its cloth. The firelight ran along the silk, and the camp was very quiet.

Horenheb did not take it. He stood where he was, looking north. North — above the firelight, the night lay black and heavy.

”Half of the western line’s standing force.” He repeated. ”The seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages of the western line are half a lifetime of my blood. The Libyans’ horses are still waiting beyond the desert.”

”General,” the messenger said, ”this is the king’s order.”

Horenheb was silent for a long time. Long enough for the torches to burn down a span. Then he reached out and took the yellow silk.

”Your general accepts the order.”

After the messenger had gone, Horenheb stood alone at the camp gate for a long time. He looked west — the way a man looks at a place he has built with his own hands, the way a man looks at a field he has sown and must leave fallow. West — the direction of the western line. There he had raised sixteen towers, built seven forts, kept four watch posts. Seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages — he knew every stone. And now, half the men there would be drawn away.

”General,” the old centurion came up behind him, his voice very low, ”if the western line loses half its men, and the Libyans learn of it...”

”They cannot be hidden from.” Horenheb said. ”Sand has no walls without gaps.”

”Then—”

”So the western line’s business cannot wait.” Horenheb said. ”Before the soldiers are drawn away, the show must be made first. Have the men add guards with great noise by day, and burn the usual smoke by night. Send a few troops of cavalry west on a few runs, kicking up the sand. Let the Libyans’ scouts see it — the western line is still the western line.”

”An empty show cannot last long.”

”It must last until the thaw.” Horenheb said. ”When the thaw comes, the northern wall will be standing, and the relief army can turn back. For these half a year, we hold on with a few troops of cavalry’s dust, and the smoke of sixteen towers.”

The old centurion said no more — there was nothing left to say that the wind would not carry away. The wind came from the west, carrying the smell of sand, and the two men stood in it the way the western line had taught them to stand. The two men stood in the dark, like two stone figures at the camp gate.

That night, Horenheb dictated his reply to the court, and the camp scribe wrote it out. There was no courtesy in the letter, only a list of items: one — the siege of Thebes must not be further weakened, only tightened; two — for the northern wall, forty craftsmen have been chosen, led north by Seb, the material list already submitted by the courier; three — after the western line is drawn down, its defense holds on ”smoke reports and patrols, cavalry and dust” until the thaw; four — for the two-line grain supply, the court should appoint a single officer to coordinate — and he named one man: Mery, of the new capital’s official granary.

”General,” the scribe stopped his brush at that item, ”Mery... is that the young grain official?”

”It is he.” Horenheb said. ”I saw his accounts at the new capital. The coming and going of every grain, written more clearly than any military report. To the grain of two lines, I could only sleep easy in the hands of such a man.”

The scribe nodded, and wrote the item out, line by line, carefully.

That night, the south camp’s messenger carried the news into the city.

Lu Zhu read the letter, and sat long under the lamp. He knew that from this night on, the war was no longer the siege of one city. South and north, two fire lines; inside the city and out, two ledgers. All the men, the grain, the walls, the roads — would be split in two between the lines.

”Tell General Horen,” he said to A-Tu, ”the city’s craftsmen begin their muster tomorrow. The northern material list has already gone with the courier. The city’s wall and the camp’s works — repair what must be repaired, guard what must be guarded. This game is now two boards — but the players are still the same men.”

A-Tu acknowledged, and rowed away into the night.

Lu Zhu read Horenheb’s letter once more under the lamp. When he reached the sentence ”half of the western line’s standing force,” he stopped for a long time. He thought of the western line’s sixteen towers, of the seven forts, four watch posts, seven villages, of the stretch of sand they had rammed into standing, hammer blow by hammer blow.

”The western line has grown thin too.” He said, low. ”This war has staked the whole house of Egypt.”

He took up his brush and wrote a few lines on the back of the letter. They were words for Horenheb: the western line may be thinned but must not be emptied — the smoke of the sixteen towers must not break for a single day. The forty craftsmen going north travel the West Bank water route with Seb, and can reach the south camp within three days. The wall of the city can still hold. The wall of the north — is entrusted to you.

When the writing was done, he gave the letter to Mery: ”Copy one for the record. Send the original out.”

Mery took the letter. He read it by the lamp, and said suddenly: ”Teacher, this letter of yours is written to General Horen — and to the north.”

”They are the same.” Lu Zhu said. ”This war has long since stopped dividing north from south.”

In a lane south of the city, one household kept its lamp burning that night.

It was the house of A-Ka, who had learned archery. A-Ka’s wound was seven parts healed; these two days he had gone back up on the wall. His mother sat under the lamp, mending his old coat, stitch by stitch, very slowly. The neighbor woman came over to visit: ”They say the north has gone to war. Your A-Ka — he won’t have to go, will he?”

”He can’t go.” A-Ka’s mother said. ”The wound in his shoulder is not healed. And even when it is — this city’s wall cannot do without him.”

”That’s true.” The neighbor woman sighed. ”But the north... if the north breaks through, won’t this place of ours...”

”Sister.” A-Ka’s mother set down her needle. ”I don’t understand the north or the south. All I know is this: my A-Ka is on the wall, and I am in this room, mending his coat. He is there, so the wall is there; the wall is there, so this house is there. And while this house stands, I have a place to finish this mending.”

The neighbor woman said nothing. After a while, she picked up her own sewing basket and sat down beside A-Ka’s mother. Two lamps, one patch of mending light — quiet as an ordinary night.

On the wall-head, Lu Zhu stood for a long time that night too.

The sky to the north was darker than usual. No stars, no moon — only wind, coming from very far away, carrying a faint smell of earth. He remembered, many years ago, standing on the scaffolding of a building site in another world — no, in this world, standing on a scaffold, looking at the lamps of a city. In those days, what he calculated was the seating of a few tables of guests. Now he calculated the grain of two lines, the walls of two fronts, the weight of two lives.

”In a man’s life,” he said, low, ”the craft does not change. It is only that the place it is set down grows heavier.”

The wind lifted the hem of his coat, and let it fall. The lamps below the city stood dense, like a field of stars fallen to earth. He counted them — the granary’s, the hospital’s, the transfer depot’s, and the lamps of ten thousand households. As he counted, he felt suddenly that this city was heavier than he had thought. So heavy that he had to stand with both legs, straighter.

”But however heavy,” he said, ”it must be carried.”

And at that hour, in the court’s war tent, the candles burned bright.

On the sand table in the tent, a red flag stood at Thebes’s position; another red flag stood at the northern border. Two flags, an entire Egypt between them, facing each other across the table.

The men of the tent said nothing. The wind came in through the tent’s mouth, setting the candles swaying. The two red flags trembled in the wind.

”South and north,” an old minister said, his voice rough, ”both are in peril.”

”The grain?” The pharaoh asked. ”How is the grain of two lines to be divided?”

The keeper of the stores came forward, holding the account book, his voice trembling: ”Answering the pharaoh — the official granaries’ stock, given whole to one line, will hold a hundred days. Divided between two lines...” he paused, ”forty days each.”

”Forty days.” The pharaoh repeated. ”And after forty days?”

No one answered. The candle flame jumped, and jumped again.

”Read Horenheb’s report.” The pharaoh said.

An attendant brought the sheepskin. The pharaoh unrolled it and read it line by line by the candlelight. When he reached the item ”the court should appoint a single officer to coordinate the two-line grain,” his gaze stopped.

”Mery.” He read out the name. ”Of the new capital’s official granary. I remember him. The new capital’s grain passed through his hands — never a grain wrong.”

”That man,” the attendant said, low, ”is now inside the walls of Thebes.”

The tent was silent again. A lone city in a siege; a man inside the city, to manage the two-line grain of the whole country — between them, the rebels’ camp, hundreds of li of road, smoke and night.

”Difficult.” The pharaoh said, and the word was a measurement, not a complaint. He closed the report, the sheepskin folding into its creases — the creases of a document that has been opened and closed many times in one night, each closing a decision deferred. The tent was quiet; the candles burned; the two red flags stood their ground on the sand table. ”But this war is difficult everywhere — in the north, in the south, in the counting of every grain. The ones who take the difficult tasks are the ones who can carry them; the easy tasks choose themselves.”

He raised his hand — the hand of a man who has made the decision and is now, with the same gesture, committing it to the world — and pushed the two red flags on the sand table, each a half-span toward the middle. Between the two flags lay the empty breadth of the whole table; in the emptiness, the candle flames moved, like an unseen river flowing slowly.

”Pass the edict.” The pharaoh said. ”Mery is appointed to the office of two-line grain coordination. The south line, the north line, the rear — three ledgers, all delivered into his hands.”

On the sand table, the shadows of the two red flags stretched very long, very long.
