Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 70: Chapter 6: The Clinic Goes West — Medicine for the Frontier Line

Seb’s letter came back to the new capital with the camels of Meru’s caravan.

It was not long — a little over half a page — and it reported the progress of the western works: Date-Grove Village’s wall had closed most of its circuit; North-Bank and Camel-Bell had their foundations up; two of the sixteen watchtowers stood, both at Date-Grove. And at the end of the letter, on a fresh line, he had written:

”There is no place in the village to treat wounds. Building the wall wounds people; holding the wall wounds them more. General Horen asks me to inquire — could the new capital’s healing hall send its free clinic west?”

The question had been a long time coming. Seb had written it and rewritten it, twice, before he let the caravan take it — a young builder’s carefulness about asking for help, the same carefulness with which he laid a course of brick: measure twice, and only then commit the mortar. The caravan hand who carried the letter did not know he was carrying a question that would move thirty people across the desert.

The letter reached Lu Zhu first, and was carried to the healing hall that same afternoon.

Imset was compounding a cough remedy at the pharmacy counter when he read it. When he finished, he handed the letter to Shafi and said: ”The western line is asking for people. For medicine.”

Shafi took the letter, read it once, read it again. Her eyes rested for a moment on the line ”There is no place in the village to treat wounds.”

”I’ll go.” A voice spoke from the doorway.

It was Nefer. She had come to the healing hall to deliver a fresh batch of bandages from her workshop and had caught the gist of the talk at the door. She set down the bandages, brushed the lime dust from her sleeve, and said: ”The healing hall’s support work — I ran it here in the new capital. Whatever the western line is short of, I’ll take people to fill it.”

That evening, several of them met in the healing hall’s courtyard: Lu Zhu, Imset, Nefer, Shafi — and Meru, who had heard the news and come over.

The courtyard was the same one where the healing hall’s first plans had been argued out years before; the same oil lamp hung from the same hook, and the same bench had been repaired twice since. There was a particular rightness in the city’s oldest problems returning to the same courtyard to be solved — as if some problems only become solvable when they have been lived with long enough.

Imset said little, and every sentence landed on solid ground. He said the west was short of water and short of medicine, and sending physicians was not a matter of sending a few packets of herbs. First there had to be a place — a building that kept out the sand, let the air through, and could store medicine; then there had to be people — a few women workers would not do; there had to be someone who could actually diagnose; and finally there had to be rules — which sickness treated how, which medicine for which complaint, and who to hold accountable when something went wrong. Miss any one of the three, and the free clinic would be a wasted journey.

He spoke in the clipped, numbered way he used when laying down treatment standards, and the others listened the way crews listen to a foreman reading a plan: no one interrupting, because the plan was already whole before it reached their ears.

He paused, and added the sicknesses the west could be expected to bring: ”Seb’s letter says: strong wind, a brutal sun, brackish water. In such a place, people fall ill with four things most often — sandy eye, cracked skin, diarrhea, and strain injuries. For the women and children, add one more: postpartum wind-sickness. I’ll write out the medicines for all of them.”

”And one more thing the letter didn’t mention.” Shafi spoke. She had been standing at the pharmacy door listening, and now she opened her mouth: ”The soldiers of the west lie in the sand year-round; skin complaints will not be scarce. I’ll set aside half the cooling-herb beds in the back garden and simmer them into an ointment for A-Shi to carry.”

”Thoroughly thought.” Lu Zhu said. He turned to Nefer: ”You pick the people. When they’re chosen, let Imset look at the roster — who can learn medicine, who handles logistics — sort them out.”

Nefer nodded. She walked to the door, and turned back: ”One more thing. This trip isn’t only about treating the sick. The women of the west also have to be taught how to care for their patients. Every household has old ones and small ones; this skill — they’ll use it.”

Imset looked up at her words, and said: ”Good. I’ll give you two copies of the prescriptions. One for the medics. One for the women — that one, written plainly.”

”The building,” Lu Zhu said, ”Seb is there. I’ve seen the walls he builds in his letters. The clinic hut should follow the branch-hall template, scaled down — one standard size, one standard layout. A model hut stands first; every village copies it.”

”The people,” Nefer said, ”are mine. The weaving workshop has plenty of capable women. I’ll pick twelve.”

”The medicine,” Shafi said, ”is my packing job. Damp-proof oilcloth, color-coded cord — not one thing missing.”

”And me?” Meru knocked his pipe out against the stone edge. ”Someone has to supply the carts and the camels.”

Everyone laughed.

The next day, the healing hall and the craftsmen’s village began to move at the same time.

Shafi worked with two pharmacy boys for three days in the pharmacy. She packed the medicines by the granary’s damp-proofing rules: what feared damp was wrapped in two layers of oilcloth; what feared the sun was wrapped in straw matting; what feared pressure went in a separate basket. Every packet carried a cord of straw tied to it, and the knot pattern differed from medicine to medicine — this was a new rule she had set in the healing hall: read the medicine by its knot, so that even a woman who could not read the characters would never pick wrong.

The knot system was Shafi’s own invention, born of a specific frustration: the hall’s medicines were handled at the far end of the line by people who would never set foot in the pharmacy. A packet of cough herbs and a packet of wound herbs looked alike at the bottom of a saddlebag; only the cord remembered which was which. She had spent an evening devising the knots — a figure-eight for the cooling herb, a double hitch for the styptic — and testing them in the dark, until her fingers could read them like characters. The women going west would carry her fingers’ memory with them.

Imset was not idle either. He spent two evenings writing a sheet of ”Common Wounds and Sicknesses of the Western Line”: which herbs for sprains and bruises, how to wash a snake or scorpion bite, what water to use for sandy eye and wind-heat, what to do for diarrhea and fever. When the sheet was finished, he called A-Shi — the most diligent pharmacy boy in the hall — to his side: ”Learn this sheet by heart. When you know it cold, you go west with Nefer. Out there, you’ll be the first medic.”

A-Shi was only sixteen, and his hands shook as he took the sheet. He stammered an answer, and that very night he was in the pharmacy memorizing the prescriptions, until the roosters called.

He was the youngest boy in the hall, small for his age, with the kind of quietness that made the older apprentices forget he was there — until a jar needed counting, or a shelf needed reaching, and then he was the one who had already done it. Imset had chosen him the way a man chooses a well-seasoned timber: not for its size, but because it had been drying in the right place for years. The sheet he now carried contained more words than he had ever been trusted with, and he meant to be worthy of every one of them.

Imset also gave A-Shi three things. The first was a small jar of ointment — its main ingredient the cooling herb from the healing hall’s back garden, pounded and simmered in palm oil; there was nothing better for the desert’s rashes. The second was a copper needle, heated red and allowed to cool, wrapped in oilcloth — for emergencies. And the third was a sentence:

”When you are not sure of a sickness, do not force a cure. Write it down, and wait for the circuit physician. A wrong cure is worse than no cure at all.”

A-Shi repeated the sentence to himself a dozen times before he packed his bag. It was the heaviest thing he carried — heavier than the ointment jar, heavier than the copper needle — because it was the one that told him when to stop.

Nefer’s selection was livelier than the pharmacy’s work.

When word went around the weaving workshop, the women who wanted to volunteer crowded the doorway. Nefer stood by a loom and questioned them one by one. The questions were not about skill — they were about whether home could spare them.

”Your husband works in the craftsmen’s village; who minds the two children?” She asked a woman of about thirty.

”My mother-in-law.” The woman said. ”I’ve talked it over with her.”

”Talking it over isn’t enough.” Nefer said. ”Bring her here. I want to hear her say it.”

The woman stared for a moment, then turned and went. A little less than half a watch later she was back, leading a gray-haired old woman. The grandmother stood in front of Nefer and, one by one, stated the two grandsons’ names, their ages, and what each liked to eat.

”Go.” The old woman said at last. ”The household is in my hands.”

Nefer nodded, and wrote the woman’s name on the roster.

The grandmother’s words — ”the household is in my hands” — were the words Nefer had been listening for all along. A woman who went west with her household settled behind her was a woman who would not spend her nights worrying instead of working. The roster was filling with names, but each name was really two households signing: the one at home that would hold, and the one out west that was about to be built.

The second to volunteer was Sister Wei. She had worked in the laundry crew for eight years; her arms were dark with sun, and when she beat clothes with her washing bat, half the river could hear it. Nefer asked why she wanted to go. Sister Wei wiped her hands on her apron and said: ”My husband died of illness last year. The healing hall’s physicians did their best for him; in the end they couldn’t save him. But they did their best. That debt — I mean to repay it.”

She said it without self-pity, the way a woman states an account she has decided to settle. Nefer wrote her name down without asking another question; some accounts were their own answer.

The third was Xiao Zao, the youngest of the workshop at seventeen. She gave no reason — only one sentence: ”My father died out west. I want to go and see what the place he worked on looks like now.”

Nefer looked at her once, and wrote her name down too. She did not ask whether Xiao Zao’s father had been conscripted or drafted, killed or lost; the girl had said all that needed saying in the shape of her sentence. What she wanted was not an answer but a place to stand and look at the ground her father had last stood on.

There were those who could not go. One young woman’s father would not give his blessing — a girl going so far away, he said, what would people think. The young woman’s eyes went red on the spot; she squatted at the foot of the wall and cried. Nefer walked over; she did not comfort her. She said one thing: ”Your father’s worry has its reasons. Settle your household well, and when the circuit rotation comes around next time — your name goes first.”

The young woman looked up at her, tears not yet dry — and smiled.

In the end, the roster held twelve names. The oldest was forty-three; the youngest, seventeen. There were women who could wash clothes, women who could cook, a woman who could deliver babies, and two who had studied herb-dispensing with the pharmacy boys. Beside each name Nefer had written a small note of two or three characters — ”sews well,” ”can carry,” ”knows herbs,” ”steady.” The roster was the same pattern as the one she had drawn up for the wartime plans, and it would serve the same purpose: when the call came, the names were already sorted.

The departure was set for five days later.

In those five days, Nefer drilled the twelve women in one thing, every day, on the open ground of the craftsmen’s village: carrying stretchers.

”The clinic hut is not only for treating the sick.” Nefer said. ”When war comes, it’s the first staging point for the wounded. How to carry a wounded man, where to send him — all of that has to be drilled now. Don’t wait until there’s a real emergency, with a man carried halfway and everyone panicking.”

The stretcher they trained with was an old door plank with two baskets of stones on it. The women worked in pairs, carrying the plank around the ground: flat ground first, then sand piles, then a narrow path. On the first day, the stones fell off three times. On the third day, they stopped falling. On the fifth, Nefer had a ditch dug through the sand pile, and the women carried the stretcher over it with their steps as even as one person’s.

The drill had a second lesson hidden inside it, and the women found it without being told: a stretcher carried steady is a patient whose pain is not jolted with every step. The door plank had become, in five days, a thing that knew the rhythm of two women’s shoulders — and the rhythm, once learned, would not be forgotten on the day the plank carried a man.

Word of the west’s need reached Horenheb while he was watching the watch from the wallhead of Fort No. 3.

The letter had come by Meru’s caravan hands. Horenheb read it, said nothing, and folded it into his breast. The soldier on duty beside him could not hold back: ”General — what does the new capital say?”

”It says the villages are getting a physician.” Horenheb said.

The soldier stared for a moment — and then his face split into a grin, and he shouted down to the men at the foot of the wall: ”Hear that! The new capital is sending people to treat us!”

A stillness fell below — and then a roar, and the walled yard broke into noise. A man threw his cap into the air; another squatted down and laughed. An old soldier touched a scar on his own arm and said: ”Good. Good. Next time I catch a chill, I won’t have to grit my teeth through it.”

Horenheb watched them without a word, his hand on his sword hilt, standing as straight as ever. But that afternoon, he broke custom and had the cookhouse boil an extra pot of hot soup.

It was not a large gesture, and Horenheb would have been the first to call it nothing — a pot of soup was a pot of soup, and the line’s rations were stretched as always. But the men of the fort had learned, over the years, to read their commander the way sailors read a sky: the extra pot of soup meant the general had received good news, and the good news meant the men’s own fortunes had turned. A line is held by walls and bows; it is held together by such pots of soup.

When the soup was ladled out, the cookhouse soldier asked: ”General — what’s the occasion?” Horenheb said: ”No occasion. Just taking the chill off the men.” The soldier took his own bowl, squatted at the foot of the wall, drank, and said quietly to the man beside him: ”The general looks like he’s had good news.” The other man slurped his soup and mumbled agreement. Outside the wall, the west wind came in gusts, flinging sand against the fort — but that bowl of soup was hot.

The westbound column set out on a clear morning.

Nefer led. Twelve women, the pharmacy boy A-Shi, and a branch of Meru’s caravan — thirty-odd people in all. The camels carried medicines, bandages, dried rations, tools, and two wooden beds, dismantled.

There was a good crowd to see them off. Shafi came, tucking the last packet of medicine into the basket on a camel’s back and checking the knots once more. Lu Zhu came too; he said nothing, only walked a circuit of the column, retying a few ropes that had not been pulled tight. When he reached the last rope, he paused, and said to Nefer: ”When you arrive, find Seb first. He’ll show you the ground. Where the hut goes — his call.”

”I know.” Nefer said.

The women’s families had come. The grandmother saw her daughter-in-law to the village gate, the two grandsons in tow. The older boy stood on tiptoe and called: ”Mother — come back soon!” The woman turned her head and answered; her voice trembled in the wind, and she did not cry.

Lu Zhu stood behind the crowd, watching the column move off. Kamon had come up beside him without his noticing. ”The western side of the account — that’s filled in now.” Kamon said. ”Mmm.” Lu Zhu said. ”The walls mend the body; the physicians mend the people. Miss either one, and neither will hold for long.”

”Ten days on the road.” Meru said to Nefer. ”I’ve given the caravan two old hands who know the route. Water: fifteen days’ worth, by head.”

”Enough.” Nefer said. ”Whatever’s left over, leave it for the people of the west.”

The camel bells rang out, and the women began to sing. It was not a new song — an old West Bank tune about river water, date trees, and coming home. The melody was soft, and it drifted out on the morning wind, and it brought tears to the eyes of everyone seeing them off.

The camel bells rang out, and the women began to sing. It was not a new song — an old West Bank tune about river water, date trees, and coming home. The melody was soft, and it drifted out on the morning wind, and it brought tears to the eyes of everyone seeing them off.

Three days out, the road changed color.

The first two days were easy — the road ran along the river, and the trees were still green. On the third day, the column turned into the desert: the sky went gray-yellow, the ground went gray-yellow, and when the wind blew, even the people went gray-yellow. The women’s talk thinned by the hour. Somewhere along the way, someone looked back — and the road behind had been smoothed over by the sand, as if they had never walked it.

The color was the thing none of them had been prepared for. The desert was not the color of anything in the new capital; it was the color of absence — of everything that had been taken away, one thing at a time, until only the ground was left. The women began to walk closer together, without deciding to; the camel bells did the work of a conversation none of them wanted to start.

”Afraid?” Nefer asked.

”Not afraid.” Xiao Zao, the youngest, said; her voice was a little hoarse. ”It’s just — this place is so big.”

”Big is good.” Nefer said. ”The bigger it is, the bigger the thing we came here to do.”

It was not comfort; it was arithmetic, and the women took it the way they took all of Nefer’s arithmetic: as something that could be stood on.

At night the campfire gathered the women in a ring. A-Shi sat at the outermost edge, going over Imset’s sheet again. When he reached the line ”Snake or scorpion bite — wash the wound with salt water,” a woman snorted with laughter: ”At the western line, let’s hope there really are no snakes.” A-Shi’s face went crimson: ”Whatever’s on the sheet has to be memorized. If we meet one, it’ll work.” The women laughed themselves into a heap — and stopped after two rounds, when someone said: ”The thing we’re going to meet out there is worse than a snake.”

The fire crackled. Xiao Zao fed it a stick and said, softly: ”My father was conscripted to build works out west. He never came back. This time I’m going west to mend people.”

No one spoke for a long while. Then Sister Wei reached over and patted Xiao Zao lightly on the back.

”Sleep.” Sister Wei said. ”There’s road to walk tomorrow.”

The old camel-hand was a man in his fifties who had spent the better part of his life walking deserts. By day he said nothing; at night, by the fire, his talk ran long. He told the west’s stories: the year the Libyans slipped in through such-and-such a gully; the year a sandstorm buried half a village; the sweetness of the oasis water, the roundness of its dates; how people died out there, and how they lived.

His stories had no heroes in them, and the women noticed: the people in them were not brave, merely stubborn; they did not win, they outlasted. A village buried by a sandstorm dug itself out with its bare hands, and went on digging dates. A man who lost his way and his water did not die of thirst — he died of giving up, and the desert was full of men who had given up in the last mile. The stories were the old camel-hand’s way of packing the journey’s true lesson into the women’s heads before they reached the line: the west does not defeat you with one blow. It wears you down, and the ones it cannot wear down are the ones who keep walking.

The women listened, spellbound. Someone asked: ”Old hand — are you afraid, out in the desert?”

”Afraid.” The old man said. ”Afraid of losing the way. A man loses the way, he loses the water; loses the water, he loses himself.” He paused, and added: ”So this column of ours — we camp the moment the dark comes, and walk the moment it lightens. Follow the sun, and you can’t go wrong.”

A woman murmured: ”Follow the sun, and you can’t go wrong.”

From that night on, the sentence became the column’s password. Every morning, Sister Wei called ”Follow the sun!” and the women rose one by one, tied their headcloths, and took the road.

On the evening of the tenth day, the caravan crossed the last sand ridge — and saw the western line.

What they saw first was smoke. Date-Grove Village’s two watchtowers stood, each with a thin thread of cooking smoke rising straight from its top. Then the wall: Date-Grove’s circuit nearly closed, its loess color going red in the sunset, like a new-built dyke. And then, waiting outside the fort — people.

The women had been steeling themselves for a frontier of bare stone and empty sand; what they found instead was a village that had heard them coming and had turned out to meet them — a crowd of faces, most of them children’s, some of them holding dates, some water jars, some babies. The wind that had scoured them for ten days went suddenly quiet in the lee of the wall, and with the quiet came a smell they had almost forgotten: cooking fire, and warm bread.

Seb stood at the front. Months had changed him: darker, thinner — but his eyes were bright. Behind him stood Horenheb, and behind them a dark press of villagers — some holding dates, some carrying water jars, some with children in their arms.

”You’ve come.” Seb said. His throat was tight; his voice shook on the two words.

”We’ve come.” Nefer said. ”Twelve people, one medic, and a whole caravan of supplies.”

She looked back at her column. The women stood in a line, the wind whipping their headcloths.

”Count off.” Nefer said.

”One, two, three... twelve.” Sister Wei finished. ”All present.”

The count was a formality — everyone could see the twelve — but it was a formality with a purpose: it told the waiting village, in the plainest possible way, that the promise had arrived in full. Not nine, not eleven. Twelve.

Horenheb stepped forward and raised his hands in greeting. He was not a man for pleasantries; he said three words: ”You’ve had a hard road.”

”No hardship.” Nefer said. ”The road is only finished. The work hasn’t started.”

”No hardship.” Nefer said. ”The road is only finished. The work hasn’t started.”

It was the first time the women had seen a village like this one.

Date-Grove’s wall had closed most of its circuit; the new wall and the old wall met at a seam still showing fresh earth, like a scar newly healed on a body. Behind the wall, the watchtowers’ shadows lay long across the ground, and the sentry on top waved down at them. The women tilted their heads back to look, until their necks ached.

”This is the place we’ve come to mend.” Nefer said. ”The walls mend the body. We mend the people.”

Xiao Zao walked at the rear. She stopped at the village mouth, in front of the half-burned wooden stake with the knife marks in it, and looked at it for a long time. Then she crouched and touched the knife marks with her fingers.

”Xiao Zao.” Sister Wei called her.

”Coming.” Xiao Zao answered, stood, brushed the dust from her hands, and caught up with the column.

The site for the clinic hut, Seb had chosen long before.

On the second day after their arrival, Seb walked Nefer around the whole works.

Date-Grove’s wall was most of the way closed, with only the western stretch still open. Along the wall, every ten-odd paces stood a crenellation, and before each one ran the shallow ditch Horenheb had set. The two watchtowers stood at the village’s northwest and southeast corners; the sentries saw them and waved from far off.

”North-Bank’s wall has its foundations up.” Seb said as they walked. ”Camel-Bell is slower — the ground’s just been cleared. We can’t spread the hands thin; Date-Grove’s circuit closes first, then we go back for the other two villages.”

”Materials?” Nefer asked.

”Stone from the river flats, plenty. Mud-bricks the villagers make on the spot. Lime comes by Meru’s caravan, once a tenday.” Seb said. ”It’s water that’s tight. The wall-work can pause; the water in people’s mouths cannot.”

Nefer looked at the sun, then at the sand, and said: ”The water — I’ll think of something. The women will scrimp; what they save, we pour into the wall.”

”What they save goes to the people first.” Seb said.

Nefer smiled: ”A wall falling takes lives; people going thirsty takes lives. Both matter.”

On the second circuit of the village, Seb stopped at an open patch of ground, slightly east of the village’s center, and said: ”Here.”

”Why here?” Nefer asked.

”Centered.” Seb said. ”Wherever a man comes from, whatever direction of the village, the walk here is about the same length. The old and the young can make it.” He paused, and added: ”And one more thing — this is the closest point to the gully behind the hill. If the day ever comes to withdraw, the wounded go into the gully from here, by the shortest road.”

”The wall?” Nefer asked. ”How far from it?”

”Thirty paces.” Seb said. ”Neither near nor far. Too far, and the wounded can’t be carried in; too near, and a stray arrow reaches the doorway.”

Nefer measured it in her mind, and nodded. ”Good. Here.”

The drawings were Seb’s, drawn through the night. He set the hut’s dimensions precisely: twelve feet east-west by eight feet north-south — exactly the width one sheet of Meru’s caravan oilcloth could cover. The hut had two rooms: the outer room held the examination bench and the medicine shelf, by the window where the light was good; the inner room held two simple cots for patients who could not rise. The door faced south, away from the west’s wind and sand; the rear wall carried two fist-sized ventilation holes, one high and one low, set staggered — Imset had written it in his letter: one high, one low, and the wind has a road to walk.

The twelve-by-eight dimensions were not arbitrary; they were the answer to a question Seb had been carrying since the first day of the wall: how much room does a sick body need, and how much can a desert village carry? A hut too large would waste materials the wall needed; too small, and the sick would lie in the doorway. Twelve by eight was the point where the two accounts balanced — and it had the further virtue, which Seb did not mention, of being the size a woman could carry water for, and a man could roof in a day, and a village could rebuild from memory if it ever burned.

”One size, one layout.” Seb rolled up the drawing. ”Date-Grove raises the model hut. We see what’s wrong, and fix it. When it’s right, North-Bank and Camel-Bell copy it.”

”Bricks?” Nefer asked.

”Mud-brick.” Seb said. ”The same stuff as the wall. The villagers know how to make them.”

The next day, the model hut went up.

Seb and a few craftsmen stretched the lines and dug the foundation trench; the villagers came to help, more people than there was work for. Nefer split the women into three groups: one helped mix mud and pass bricks, one handled the water, one unloaded the camels and registered the medicines and bandages, item by item. A-Shi crouched under a makeshift shade awning, opened his medicine chest, and laid out the packets by prescription on reed matting to air.

”Does the medicine have to dry in the sun?” Xiao Zao asked.

”Not in the sun.” A-Shi said. ”My teacher said this medicine loses its strength if it sees light. I’m airing it — letting the damp of the road steam off.”

”You know so much.” Xiao Zao said.

A-Shi went red again. ”It’s on the sheet.” He said.

The mud-bricks were made on the spot by the villagers, straw worked into the mud — the same mix as the wall. The women learned to pass bricks, one after another, arms aching and switching off when they tired. Sister Wei did the work of two: passing bricks with her left hand while her right passed water to the people beside her.

On the day the roof beam went up, there was a small mishap. One beam came up half a foot short — a rope had loosened on the road, and the beam had lost a chunk in unloading. Seb crouched over the timber pile for a moment, then said: ”No replacement. This short one goes over the door — the door frame is narrow. It’ll fit exactly.”

The crew did as he said, and when the beam went up, it seated perfectly.

”There is no waste material on a worksite.” Seb said. ”Only material in the wrong place.”

The women took the words to heart. Later, when they managed the medicines, they applied the same principle: the trimmings of herbs that seemed useless were saved and boiled for hand-washing water — good for sandy eye.

Three days, and the hut stood.

Mud-brick walls, a reed-mat roof, a wooden door, two ventilation holes. The outside wall was plastered with yellow clay mixed with straw; when it dried, its color matched every wall around it — seen from a distance, the hut looked as if it had grown out of the ground.

On the tenth day after the model hut stood, the second hut, at North-Bank Village, broke ground.

This time no one had to be called. The villagers had made the mud-bricks in advance, stacked in neat rows at the edge of the site; the stone had been carried back from the river flats, piled into a small mountain; even the plaster clay was mixed, covered with wet straw matting to keep it from drying. The elder of North-Bank said: ”Whatever Date-Grove has, we should have. Later is too late — a sick child would have to walk ten li to the next village.”

The second hut went up faster than the first. Seb and the craftsmen measured the ground and stretched the lines; the villagers could do half the remaining work themselves. Four of the women were sent over to help. On the fifth day, the roof beam went up; on the seventh, the plastering was done; on the ninth, the same rules-oilcloth as Date-Grove’s hung over the door lintel.

Same size. Same layout. Even the south-facing door and the two staggered ventilation holes in the rear wall matched to the inch. Seb stood between the two huts, looking left, looking right, and said: ”That’s right. From now on, every hut on the western line is the same. A man walks into any one of them — it’s like coming home.”

Nefer said: ”The third one, Camel-Bell — next month.”

The day the clinic opened, Date-Grove was noisier than on the day the wall had gone up.

The queue stretched a long way. The front of it was mostly old people and children. The old squad leader came on his wooden staff, and took his place third in line. When the others tried to wave him forward, he refused: ”Give the place to the ones who can’t stand.” Someone laughed: ”You can’t stand either.” The old squad leader stamped his staff on the ground: ”I can wait my turn.”

The joke went down the line and came back as laughter — the particular laughter of a village that has just discovered it has a queue to wait in. A queue meant a place that stayed open; a place that stayed open meant the village was no longer alone with its pain. The old squad leader had seen villages where the only line was the one at the graves; he stood in this one gladly, third in line, and did not move up when they offered.

The first patient was an old man who had strained his back carrying stone. He had gritted his teeth through the pain for half a month. A-Shi worked the medicine oil into his back according to the sheet, then wrapped a hot compress pack and told him to sleep with it under his waist. ”Three days. If you’re not better, come back — it means it didn’t work.” The old man left half-doubtful.

”Three days, come back” — the instruction was itself a kind of promise: the hut would still be here in three days, and the medicine would still work, and the man’s back would still be worth treating. A village that had learned to grit its teeth for half a month needed to hear that sentence; it was the sentence that said the waiting was over.

The second was a young mother with a child in her arms. The child had coughed at night for the better part of a month, eyes swollen with it. A-Shi looked at the child’s throat, asked about the color of the phlegm, and mixed half a packet of cough-settling herb powder to be drunk in warm water, in three doses. The mother was all gratitude and turned to go — Sister Wei caught her, and taught her to divide the powder into three small packets, one dose at a time.

”Take too much at once, and it turns bitter.” Sister Wei said. ”The child won’t bear it.”

She said it the way she said everything — plainly, with the weight of a woman who had raised children and buried a husband, and had learned that the smallest instructions were the ones that saved lives.

The third was the old squad leader. He did not come for his left leg — that leg had been gone for years, nothing to be done about it — he came for the sole of his foot: the callus worn by his wooden staff had cracked, and every step hurt. A-Shi soaked his foot in hot water, applied the ointment, and taught him to wrap the staff’s handle thicker with old cloth.

The old squad leader’s foot was the map of his line: the callus ran across the ball of the foot in a thick, ridged band, worn by the years of his weight coming down on the staff, step after step, from Fort No. 3 to Thebes and back. A-Shi worked the ointment in without comment — a sixteen-year-old’s hands on a veteran’s foot, and neither of them found it strange, because the foot and the hands were both, in their way, part of the same work: keeping the line standing.

”Thicker — I won’t be used to it.” The old squad leader said.

”Unused for two days, and then you’ll never let it go.” A-Shi said.

The old squad leader thought it over, and nodded: ”Then I’ll do as you say.”

News ran faster than people. By afternoon, more patients had come — from neighboring villages, some riding donkeys. Sister Wei and two women kept order at the door, their voices gone hoarse, shouting the words Nefer had taught them: ”One at a time! The serious cases first! Mothers with children, come to the front!”

There were cases they could not treat. An old woman who had had a bellyache for half a year, thin as a bundle of sticks. A-Shi felt her pulse, pressed her belly — and his face changed. He dared not prescribe; he only had the women boil her a bowl of hot porridge, and then, holding the sheet, he wrote down her symptoms, stroke by careful stroke.

The sheet was the one place where his uncertainty could be kept safe. He wrote the symptoms the way Imset had taught him to write them — what the patient said, what the pulse said, what the belly said when pressed — and left the space for the diagnosis blank, the way a builder leaves a joint open for the timber that has not arrived yet. The old woman drank her porridge and looked at him with the patient eyes of the long-suffering, and he looked back at her and thought of his teacher’s sentence: write it down, and wait.

”Write it down,” he said, low, ”and wait for the circuit physician.”

”Write it down,” he said, low, ”and wait for the circuit physician.”

What truly won the western soldiers over was what happened on the third day.

Five soldiers at Fort No. 3 had broken out in patches of red rash on their arms and necks — itchy, painful, weeping when scratched. The army physician had tried several ointments over half a month; the rash did not improve; it spread. Horenheb was frantic with worry — the men itched so badly they could not sleep, and went up on the wall by day with red-rimmed eyes.

The rash had become a small, running sore in the fort’s daily life: the five men could not hold a bow steady, could not lie down at night, and their scratching had begun to infect one another’s bunks. The army physician had done everything the old medicines allowed, and the failure was eating at him the way the rash ate at the men — a physician’s helplessness is a special kind of wound, and it does not close quickly.

A-Shi went to look. One glance at the rash, and a line from the sheet came back to him. He had hot water boiled, salted it, and washed the five soldiers’ afflicted skin carefully three times over; then he applied Imset’s ointment — the one made from the healing hall’s back-garden herb, pounded and simmered in palm oil, cooling and drawing out the poison.

”Three days.” A-Shi said. ”If it’s not better in three days, I’ll bring my teacher here myself.”

He said it with his voice steady, though his heart was pounding. The sheet had said wash with salt water; the sheet had said the ointment cooled and drew poison; but between the sheet and a soldier’s skin lay the whole weight of being sixteen years old and far from home, with five men’s sleep resting on his hands. He washed the last man’s arm, dried it, and did not let his hands shake.

On the second day, the five soldiers stopped itching. On the third, the rash had flattened by more than half. On the fifth, only a few faint marks remained.

The five soldiers told everyone they met. An old soldier surnamed Gao, the marks on his arm still fading, went around the fort rolling up his sleeve for anyone to see: ”Look at this! The young medic from the new capital — three days! Three days for what the army physician couldn’t cure in half a month!”

The army physician heard, and went red to the ears. That very night he ran to the clinic hut, pulled A-Shi under the lamp, and asked for the ointment’s recipe. A-Shi did not hoard it; he recited the ingredients one by one. The physician listened, sat at the door smoking for half the night, and finally said: ”I’ve treated soldiers here for half a lifetime, and it never once occurred to me to wash with salt. This method — I’ll remember it.”

The next day, the army physician brought over a small packet of frostbite ointment he had kept for himself: ”The western winters have a hard wind. You’ll have use for this.”

Horenheb called A-Shi before him and looked at him for a long while. ”How old are you?”

”Sixteen.” A-Shi said.

”Good.” Horenheb said. ”From now on, the western line has a bowl of rice for you.”

The sentence was the general’s version of a contract — the same economy he used in every order he gave: few words, and every one of them binding. A bowl of rice on the western line was a post, a name on the ration roll, a place in the line’s account that would be honored until the line itself failed. A-Shi, who had come west expecting to be a visitor, understood without being told that he had just become something else: a man of the line, with a bowl of rice and a sheet of prescriptions and a village that counted on him. He straightened his back, and the sixteen-year-old who answered the general’s questions stood a little taller than the boy who had ridden in on a camel.

That evening, Seb came to find Nefer. The two of them sat on the steps of the model hut, looking at the stars.

”I’ve written a letter back to the new capital.” Seb said. ”That the hut is standing, that you’ve come, that the people of the western line now sleep easy.”

”One thing is still missing.” Nefer said.

”What?”

”Rules.” Nefer said. ”The hut cannot rest on one sixteen-year-old medic. The village physicians have to be trained by someone. The medicine has to be managed by someone. The circuit-visit rotation has to be scheduled.”

Seb nodded. The next day, the two of them brought Horenheb, and the three of them set the rules in the hut.

Village medic on duty: every joint-defense village picks one steady soul to study under A-Shi for half a month — recognizing herbs, changing dressings, bandaging, boiling water for disinfection, everything hands-on. When trained, he keeps the hut by day; what he is not sure of, he writes down for the circuit physician.

The rule had a second clause that went unwritten: the village medic was chosen not for brilliance but for steadiness. A man who panics in a crisis is a man who cannot be taught anything, however clever he is; a man who stays calm is a man who can learn anything, however slowly. Nefer and Horenheb had each learned this in different trades — she in the weaving workshop, he on the wall — and they had come to the same conclusion without needing to say it aloud.

The man Date-Grove chose was the old widower who had always boiled water and served tea to visitors. He was past fifty, childless, honest, with a remarkably good memory. On the first day A-Shi taught him five herbs; on the second he could recite all five, properties included, without error. A-Shi was delighted, and every evening after the last patient, he taught the old man half a watch extra.

”When you’ve learned it all, you’ll be Date-Grove’s physician.” A-Shi said.

The old widower waved his hands: ”Me, a physician? I’m only fit to lend A-Shi a hand.”

”Lending a hand is being a physician.” A-Shi said. ”The night someone pounds on your door, you answer it — and that’s worth more than anyone.”

The old widower said nothing. From that day on, he was the first to the hut every morning and the last to leave. He swept the sand out before the first patient came; he set the medicine jars within reach; he learned where the bandage roll lived and how to boil the water without being asked. A man who had spent his life alone had found, at past fifty, a reason to be needed, and he held onto it the way a drowning man holds a rope.

Once, in the middle of the night, a villager really did come knocking, saying a child was burning with fever. The old widower threw on his clothes, brought the family inside, boiled water — and only then went to wake A-Shi. By the time they came back, the child had fallen asleep in the old man’s arms.

Circuit-visit rotation: the healing hall’s senior physicians take turns coming once a tenday, walking the whole line — lingering where the sickness is thickest. When medicine runs short, write a note; the caravan carries it.

Medicine ledger: every packet in and out is recorded, by the same rules as the healing hall. Two copies — one stays at the hut, one goes back to the hall.

”These three rules — write them down, paste them on the door.” Horenheb said. ”Whoever comes in reads them first.”

That afternoon, Nefer had Sister Wei copy the three rules onto a fresh oilcloth, tie it with straw cord, and hang it over the hut’s door lintel. The wind caught it; the cloth flapped like a small banner.

The first circuit physician arrived at the end of a tenday.

He was an old physician from the main hall, riding a gray donkey with half a basket of fresh medicine across its back. He arrived as the light was failing; A-Shi went out to meet him, and the two compared their prescription sheets at the door. The old physician leafed through A-Shi’s illness ledger, and when he came to the old woman’s page, his brow furrowed.

”Tomorrow I’ll go see her.” He said.

Early the next morning, the physician went. He spent half a watch at the old woman’s house, and when he came out, his expression had eased considerably. ”Not a grave illness.” He told A-Shi. ”Long-standing indigestion; the spleen and stomach are weak. Your symptom notes are careful — that entry earns you a word of praise.” A-Shi’s face went red; he hung his head: ”It’s all what my teacher taught.”

The physician stayed four days, going through the sick of all the line’s villages. When he left, he left most of his new medicine behind and carried a copy of A-Shi’s ledger back to the new capital.

”Next time I come,” the physician said, ”I’ll bring you a new sheet of prescriptions.”

”Next time I come,” the physician said, ”I’ll bring you a new sheet of prescriptions.”

In the days that followed, the clinic hut put down roots, day by day.

In the morning, the women’s first task was sweeping the hut. The sand could never be fully swept — but they swept anyway: swept, and the place was half clean. It was a sentence Sister Wei had brought from the laundry crew — a place where the work was never finished and the work was still done — and the women had adopted it for the hut the way they had adopted ”follow the sun”: as a thing to lean on when the day was long.

In the forenoon, the patients were mostly old people and children. In the afternoon, the workers coming off shift filled the doorway. A-Shi sat the clinic, Sister Wei dispensed the medicine, Xiao Zao managed the water. Water was precious — but the water that boiled a sick man’s medicine, not one bowl of that was ever spared. The rule was not written on the oilcloth; it was written in the way Xiao Zao measured each pour, giving the medicine water first and the drinking water second, and no one had ever needed to tell her twice.

Horenheb came every other day. He did not come inside; he rode to the village gate, looked at whether the hut’s chimney was smoking, whether a queue stood at the door — and rode away. Once he saw Xiao Zao mending a child’s clothes at the foot of the wall, and reined in his horse to watch for a moment. The squad leader beside him said: ”General — these women from the new capital have gone and softened this hard place up.” Horenheb said nothing, only turned his horse’s head and rode on. After that, the squad leaders knew: what the general came to see, every time, was that thread of smoke. A line held by walls and bows was held, too, by a chimney that smoked on schedule; the smoke was the line’s pulse, and Horenheb checked it the way a physician checks a patient’s breathing — from a distance, so as not to disturb it.

Soldiers came often too. Off-duty men from Fort No. 3 came to haul water, to repair the roof. Old Gao came every few days, and when he came he squatted at the door — not for treatment, just to split firewood. Sister Wei chased him off: ”The marks on your arm have barely faded — what are you doing heaving an axe!” He grinned: ”Splitting wood doesn’t take strength. My hands itch.” Once, he saw the hut’s roof had a corner lifted by the wind; without a word he went back to the fort, fetched his tools, and went up the ladder — half an afternoon, and the roof was fixed.

When he was done, he stayed up on the roof, shouting down: ”This roof — I fixed it. If it ever leaks again, come find me!”

The women below laughed. The laughter carried; the sentry on the wall heard it too. The roof was mended, and the claim of ownership — ”if it ever leaks again, come find me” — was, in its way, the same thing the wall had taught the village: a thing that is claimed is a thing that is kept.

When Meru’s caravan came again, it brought news from the new capital.

The man in charge was brimming with it: the temple had raised forty-eight columns, none the same height; on the equinox, the noon sun had flooded the altar, not one shadow pressing onto it; the whole city had gone to see; everyone called it a miracle.

The women gathered to listen, eyes shining. Xiao Zao said: ”When the war’s over, I’m going to the new capital to see that sun.” Sister Wei laughed at her: ”First you’d better get enough sunburn salve for this side’s sun.”

The caravan hand told the story the way such stories are told on the trade roads — with the details that travel best: the numbers, the hour, the crowd. He did not know what the story meant; he knew only that it had made the ferry crossing stop work for an afternoon, and that was enough to make it worth telling twice. The women of the clinic heard it differently. They had spent a season watching one miracle being built, course by course, on this side of the desert; the news from home had the exact shape of the thing they were doing, seen from the other end.

Seb said nothing. He crouched beside the caravan’s lime sacks, weighing and entering them, one by one. When he had listened to the end, he raised his head, looked east, and said one thing: ”My master’s side has stood up too.”

That night, he wrote the news from the new capital into his letter to Lu Zhu, and at the end of the letter added one line: ”The western people, hearing of the temple, say the new capital has a god. I want to tell them: the west has one too — a wall standing in the sand, and it does not fall. That is a god.”

In the evenings, the quietest hour came. Nefer and the women sat at the door, mending clothes, winding bandages, sorting the next day’s medicine, packet by packet. Children ran along the foot of the wall, chasing a goat that belonged to no one in particular; the bell around its neck went ding, dang, mingling with the distant camel bells.

Xiao Zao learned to recognize a dozen-odd medicines. A-Shi’s method of teaching her was crude but effective — put each herb in her palm, smell it with eyes closed, and only when the smell was familiar, learn its shape. Xiao Zao’s palms carried the medicine smell all day; she said at night the smell was in her bedding, and it was a comfort.

The smell was a comfort for a reason she did not name: it was the smell of the place her father had been sent to die in, turned into something that healed. The west had taken her father; the west was now taking her hands, and the hands were coming back fuller. She did not say any of this; she only kept her palms open, and learned the herbs one by one, the way her father’s generation had learned the ground — with the body, and in silence.

Sister Wei learned to keep the medicine ledger. She could not read, so she used the knot method A-Shi taught her: a packet in, a knot on the ledger cord; a packet out, a knot undone. At evening, the knots on the cord and the packets on the shelf always matched.

The cord hung by the door, and the women had grown used to seeing Sister Wei’s fingers moving along it, checking, counting, settling the day’s account. A woman who could not write had found a way to make her records speak; the cord was her page, and the knots her characters, and when the circuit physician asked how much medicine the hut had used in a tenday, Sister Wei could answer without a moment’s hesitation — by feel, the way she had once known a washload by the weight of it.

Every other evening, the women taught the village wives how to tend the sick at the door of the hut.

The lessons were not deep: how to boil water before drinking, how to lay a hot cloth on a swelling, how to cool a feverish child’s body, how to hold a patient up when feeding medicine so it would not choke. Many came to learn — most with children in arms or stools in hand. The quickest learner was a young wife whose husband had strained his shoulder on the wall; she changed his dressings every day, quicker than anyone.

The lessons had a quiet arithmetic behind them that no one announced: one village wife who could cool a fever meant one fewer child carried across the sand at night; one wife who could change a dressing meant one less wound gone sour before the physician’s next round. The women of the workshop taught the women of the village the way hands teach hands — no lectures, only doing it together until the doing was learned — and the village wives, in turn, taught them things no pharmacy had: which well’s water was sweetest, which herb grew where the wall met the gully, how to read the wind’s temper from the way the sand moved.

”This skill,” Nefer told them, ”is for yourselves. Someone at home falls ill — don’t panic first. The one thing you know is one less suffering the patient bears.”

An old woman wiped her eyes at this and said: ”If someone had taught me this ten years ago, my old man...” She did not finish. She waved her hand, moved her stool to the front, and listened harder.

The unfinished sentence was the truest teaching of the evening. Nefer did not press her; some sentences are complete without their endings. But she saw the old woman’s shoulders set, and she knew the lesson had found the one student it most needed — the student who had already lost someone to the ignorance this class was meant to cure.

One evening, the old man who had pursed his lips at the wall-building came. He was not sick. He squatted at the hut’s door and smoked a pipe. When he was done, he said: ”This place — it feels more like home than it used to.”

Nefer asked: ”It didn’t before?”

”Before,” the old man said, ”a man lived inside the wall, and his heart lived outside it. Now...” he thought for a moment, knocked his pipe against his boot, ”now there’s half a wall built inside the heart too.”

He said it without noticing the strangeness of the compliment — the same man who had sworn the wall would fall at a push was now, without irony, measuring his own heart in walls. The half wall inside the heart was not a thing he had planned; it had grown the way the village’s wall had grown, from the labor of people who had decided, one day at a time, that this place was worth keeping. He had not noticed the moment it started, which is the way of all such things.

The words were crude, and Nefer understood them. She kept them in her heart, and wrote them into her letter home. When Lu Zhu read the line, he was standing on the temple works. He read it twice, folded the letter, and put it inside his breast.

The words were crude, and Nefer understood them. She kept them in her heart, and wrote them into her letter home. When Lu Zhu read the line, he was standing on the temple works. He read it twice, folded the letter, and put it inside his breast.

Another day, Nefer met Horenheb at the village gate.

The two of them stood at the foot of the wall talking. Nefer said: ”General — this trip has shown me one thing. However well the walls are built, if the people break down, the walls are built for nothing. Heal the people, and there are hands to hold the walls.”

Horenheb looked at her, and said: ”Seb said the same thing.”

”Then it must be the truth.” Nefer said.

She said it with the flat certainty of a woman who had spent her life in workshops and granaries, where a thing said twice by two honest people was a thing that could be built on. Horenheb, who had spent his life where a thing said once by a scout was enough to move a garrison, found the arithmetic familiar. The two of them were from different trades and had arrived at the same load-bearing fact — the way two surveyors, starting from opposite ends of a line, meet in the middle when both have measured true.

Horenheb nodded. He looked at the western sand ridge, and after a moment said: ”I have held this line for half my life. This is the first time I feel the line is made of more than stone and earth.”

Nefer said nothing. She followed his gaze. There was nothing on the sand ridge — only the sunset, burning the whole sky and ground into gold-red.

The movement on the western ridge appeared at dusk.

First a few black dots, halting on the farthest ridge, still. The sentry in the tower counted, and lit one smoke. The people of Date-Grove saw the smoke and drove the livestock inside the wall, herded the old and the young into their houses. The archers on the wall went up, bows drawn half.

The one smoke went up from the tower and hung in the evening sky — the signal the whole oasis had drilled until it could be read in sleep: enemy at the border. There was no panic in the village; that was what the drills were for. The goats went in, the children went in, and the men who were not on the wall went to the gates and stood ready at the movable closures, the way they had practiced a hundred times.

The black dots did not come down. They waited for a while, moved forward half a li, and stopped again.

From the wallhead it could be seen that they were pointing from horseback — pointing at the new wall, at the towers behind it, and at the yellow-clay hut at the tower’s foot. They looked for a long time. The sunset stretched their shadows long across the sand.

The hut at the tower’s foot drew their eyes longer than the wall did. It was the newest thing in the village, the one thing their intelligence had not mentioned — and on a frontier, a thing unaccounted for is a thing to be studied. The women inside the hut had been told to stay by the rear wall, and they stayed; the hut’s chimney, per the drill, was cold.

Then they turned their horses and rode away.

Not one of them came down.

On the wallhead, a young archer’s palms were soaked with sweat. He asked the old soldier beside him: ”Why don’t they charge?”

The old soldier squinted at the ridge for a moment, and said: ”They’re looking too. Looking at our wall, our towers, our people.”

”And when they’ve looked?”

”When they’ve looked,” the old soldier said, ”they have to go back and talk it over. Talk about how to attack.”

The young archer swallowed, loosened his bow by half an inch, and drew it full again. ”By the time they’ve talked it out,” he said, ”our wall will be closed.”

The old soldier said nothing. He only shifted his quiver closer to his hand, to the position where he could reach it fastest.

Night came. The lamp in the clinic hut was lit, yellow and warm as a date. The wind came from the west and made the flame waver. The flame did not go out.

In the lamplight, the old widower laid out the next day’s medicine, packet by packet, in the places where a hand could reach them without reaching far. He worked slowly, the way he did everything now — a man who had been given a post, and meant to hold it. The medicine packets went in the order A-Shi had taught him, the bandage roll beside the jar of ointment, the boiled-water pot where the morning’s first patient would see it.

When he was done, he blew out the lamp and leaned against the door plank, and slept. Beyond the door plank — a sky full of stars.

The lamp was out, but the village did not sleep as it had slept a season ago. In the houses along the wall, children slept the sleep of villages with walls; the old widower’s door plank was the last thing to close, and the first to be answered if someone knocked. Out on the ridge, the riders were riding home to their campfires, carrying the news of the new wall and the hut that stood at its foot. Both sides of the border were counting the same thing now — the days — and neither side could see the other’s calendar.

(End of Chapter 6)
