Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 54: Chapter 3: The Courtyard Breaks Ground Storage Logic Crosses Over

On the third morning after the medical hall’s foundation lines were driven, the first course of wall began to rise from the trench.

The adobe-brick drying yard — that same open ground where, for weeks, nothing had stood but stacked bricks and the kiln’s drifting smoke — had transformed, overnight, into a construction site dense with purpose. Quarrymen laid out the stone on the eastern approach; donkey carts hauling sand from the riverbank had pressed deep, parallel grooves into the access road, tracks running straight from the water’s edge to the wall line and beyond, past where the eye could follow, into the dust-haze where the laborers were still digging. To the south, the reed-mat stockpile — bundles upon bundles of dried reed, each tied with a figure-eight knot — shifted slightly as the wind caught them, and a young apprentice, carrying an armload of mortar-mixing tubs, walked straight through them, his shins catching the reed bundles’ sharp-cut ends, the stalks drawing thin lines of blood across his calves. He did not stop. He did not even slow.

The old plasterer had been the first to arrive that morning — a full watch before anyone else. He did not announce himself. He simply appeared at the wall line, set down his trowel, and began. His fingers ran across the foundation’s dressed-stone course, one stone at a time, confirming that through the night’s settling the slope had not shifted. Three points of contact — wall head, wall belly, wall foot — his palm returning with the same answer each time: level, true, no deformation. Then he stood, reached into his tool case, and pulled out the trowel he had carried through half a lifetime of plastering.

That trowel — its blade had a notch cut one-third of the way along its edge, a modification he had made years ago during a temple repair in Thebes. He had been in his early forties then, his eyes still sharp enough to work by lamplight, and he had cut that notch so the trowel’s edge would fit into a standard brick joint without gouging the mortar. Over the decades, that notch had become a gauge: narrow notch for pointing joints, medium notch for spreading bed-mortar, wide notch for parging the scratch coat. Every wall he had ever built — temple, tomb, granary — had been laid with the same trowel, and after every wall, he had added one more fine scratch on the blade’s spine. The scratches were so numerous now that the steel had worn smooth — polished by years of thumb-pressure into an ergonomic curve that fit his grip exactly. When he slid the trowel into his hand, it settled into place the way a door settles into its frame — no gap, no rattle. A tool that knew its master. And the master — that old man with the stooped back — had only one hand left that could still lay a true line. If his hand drifted by half a finger-width, the whole course would go crooked.

Kamon organized the stone supply from the quarry gang — one relay team bringing the stone, another team dressing it at the construction edge. All of Akhetaten’s quarried stone, all of its masons — every man who could swing a hammer — had been mustered to the brick yard to maintain the pace, because the stone supply could not break. Every day’s delay at the quarry meant one more day the walls could not rise. Every day the walls did not rise meant one more day the sick lay on reed mats under a leaking roof. Kamon stood at the head of the supply line, logging each load with a charcoal tally, his voice carrying across the yard. The laborers hauling stone had mortar and lime dust crusted on their knees; by the time they walked to the wall line, their legs were so stiff the joints cracked. But they did not stop. One of them, a young mason running the stone-stacking line, had been working flat out since dawn, and when his knee finally buckled, he simply caught himself on the tamped-sand bedding, straightened his leg with a sharp crack, and kept going. The man beside him — a stonecutter twice his age — saw it and said nothing. Did not even raise his head. He just nudged the chisel one more inch into the stone’s bedding plane, his breathing steady, his hand firm. He had been on this site for enough days to know: when the stone supply was running, you did not stop.

The walls went up faster than anyone had expected, and the reason was not speed — it was that every movement, every man, every trowel-load of mortar had been driving toward the same point. The old plasterer laid brick and spread mortar with a rhythm that looked unhurried; but when he set a brick, it sat flat on the first pass, needing no adjustment, no tapping, no tilting to level. The masons beside him asked how he did it. He said, ”My eyes measure it. My fingers feel it.” When the brick met the bedding mortar, there was no gap — no visible joint — and his fingers knew that before his eyes did. As he said this, he did not raise his head. His finger slid across the joint between the brick he had just laid and the next, then slid back along the same joint’s underside. When it slid to the right, his hand paused — just a breath — and from his tool case he pulled a small, palm-sized copper trowel and pressed it into the gap between the third and fourth bricks of the bottom course. The bystanders saw no gap. But his fingers had felt it. And when that copper blade slipped in, and he pressed it once — level — the gap was gone.

The medical hall’s interior walls — when they reached the height of the door lintels — the old plasterer stopped for one full handspan of silence.

Not because the walls were done. He stopped because Shafi had handed him a sheet of leather — a template, cut to size under Lu Zhu’s direction, that she had trimmed from a different hide than the one she used for her own records. The template displayed the shelves: different depths, each annotated with its purpose and dimension. The narrowest shelf — no wider than a thumb’s thickness — was marked for seed-drawers. The old plasterer took the leather template and looked first at its edges — cut clean, no burrs, meaning the knife had been sharpened before the cut. Then he looked at the annotations.

”Those shelf templates — did you design them from scratch?”

”Yes.” Shafi was crouched on the other side of the wall, her voice carrying through the gap between bricks. ”The shelf dimensions — I matched them one by one to each medicine cabinet’s designated use. Flat shelves for bundled herbs, narrow shelves for seed-drawers — the dried pomegranate rind takes about three finger-widths of depth, a finger and a half of height. The small ceramic jars for seed storage — those need a taller slot, about three fingers and a half, to leave air above the lid. The shelf spacing is different for every row, and every row’s height corresponds to one herb’s moisture-sensitivity grade.” As she spoke, she drew on the ground with her finger — measuring out each interval, her fingers pausing at different heights for each shelf row. The first row, an elbow’s width. The second, a finger and a half taller. The third, another half-finger above. The fourth — the topmost — a full handspan of clearance for the seed-jars. ”The herbs that can’t tolerate humidity go low. The ones that can take a little damp go higher. The ones that need the most ventilation go in the middle.”

The old plasterer listened without interrupting. His finger ran along the edge of the leather template, confirming its thickness was sturdy enough to withstand being passed from hand to hand among the apprentices, and then he looked at the shelf-dimension annotations inside the pharmacy. This single sheet of leather — it would be handled, checked, and rechecked by apprentices’ fingers at least thirty times a day. It had to hold up.

”Real dimensions, then.”

”All real. Every shelf was measured against the herbs it holds. Dried pomegranate rind — total shelf length about four finger-widths, shelf depth about three. Dried chamomile — same shelf depth, but the ceramic jar takes a wider footprint. The jar is not round — it’s oval. The long span is about one finger and a half, the short span about one. And the jar itself needs clearance from the shelf above.” Shafi pulled thin cords of different colors from her sash. Each cord corresponded to a measurement. ”These are the markers. The green cord is chamomile, the yellow is myrtle-leaf, the brown is pomegranate-rind. Each one’s shelf depth and width — once the cabinet is built, every herb goes through a final fitting against its corresponding cord, so nothing ends up in the wrong drawer and nothing gets mixed.” Then she laid a set of custom-carved wooden plugs beside the cords — each plug cut to a different thickness, matching the standard dimensions of ceramic jars and storage vessels. ”Master says that when we stock herbs later, every jar needs to be measured against its matching plug before it goes on the shelf. That way, no jar gets swapped by mistake.”

The old plasterer set down his trowel. He looked at those cords and plugs for a moment, held in Shafi’s hands — held tight. The cords were short, their ends not even trimmed clean; they had been cut from the scrap left over after Shafi trimmed the leather sheet, and in the cutting, she had saved the longer pieces, knowing someone would need them for marking. The plugs — the width of the herb-stack drawer was exactly one finger and a half, no more, no less. He asked no more questions. He swung his mortar-loaded trowel across and scraped it clean on the brick course where the wall narrowed — the zone marked for the seed-drawer shelf. His trowel drew a new line on the wall at a position one notch tighter than the original gauge — the depth-width of that shelf matching the leather template’s width-line on the drawing. The sand bed could not be trusted alone. It could only be trusted if the gauge-line was true.

Dried chamomile — the first bundle of it that Shafi carried to the storage room — had been sun-dried on the flat stones outside the pharmacy. It was Shafi who judged when to move them: too little sun and they would mold; too much and the leaves would bleach. Every time she shifted the bundles, Kamon, working the wall line, glanced over — his thumb rubbing two slow circles on the hammer handle’s groove.

Shafi carried the dried chamomile bundle to the front of the narrow slot — the custom slot built to the width of the herb stack. The herbs were her responsibility; the slot was built for them. She slid the bundle in. The fit was exact — flush to the edge, no kinking of leaves, no crushing of stems. She had built test models of these slots back in Thebes — rough mock-ups, made from packing-crate lumber — and every time, the stems of the bundled branches would catch and snap, forcing her to rebuild the slot wider. But this time — she had not bound the herbs with twine. She had let them rest loose. And the loose bundle slid in. Something caught in her throat, and she stood there, the bundle cradled in her palms, looking at the slot — its smooth edge, its precise depth — and she did not speak. It was nothing. It was just a slot. But it was a slot she had designed — and the herb fit.

”Let me see that slot.” The old plasterer’s voice came from beside the mortar tub, where he had been stirring the reed-fiber into the mix. He came over, and Shafi pulled the bundle out to show him the clearance. He ran his finger into the slot, then crouched and pushed more mortar into the gap around the narrow-shelf brick course, pressing the lime-fiber into the joint so firmly the mortar blocked every light-gap. Once it was sealed, he straightened and wiped his trowel clean. The motion was automatic — the same stroke he used after every wall he had ever built, scraping the blade clean against the mortar tub’s rim. But this time, after he scraped, he paused — his thumb checking that the trowel’s edge was still true. And after checking, he lifted another brick. This brick’s bedding surface carried a smear of something dark green — a crushed leaf. He did not wipe it off.

The first warning sign of a medicine shortage did not come from the inventory lists. It came sooner than the inventory lists, and it was worse.

By the second week of wall construction, a shipment of dried herbs from Thebes came down the river to the ferry crossing — four cargo bundles, each tied with linen cord, the knots still damp from the hold. Shafi led the apprentice team to the ferry crossing to receive the shipment. The boat sat in the shallows, its hull listing slightly from the uneven weight of its load, and as the first bundle was lifted onto the bank, a faint water stain bloomed across the bottom layer of linen — a patch of darker fabric no bigger than a palm. Shafi reached out to blot the stain with her sleeve. Her finger came away damp. She touched it to her nose: nothing. No smell at all. The boatman standing on the deck, coiling his mooring line, saw her gesture and said, ”That’s just river water — it seeped through the hull. It’s clean.”

She opened the first bundle.

A wave of damp, fungal reek surged out before the linen was fully unwrapped. The myrtle-leaf — the entire top layer — was moldy. The surface, normally a flat gray-green, was now studded with pale white fur, a fine coating of mildew so dense it looked like frost. She opened the second bundle: the same. The third: mold had eaten through nearly half. The fourth — the bottom bundle, the one that had been pressed deepest into the hold — showed only the faintest trace of spotting on the uppermost surface. The linen wrappings nearest the hull — where the river water had soaked through — were the worst. The boatman, working beside her to unload, saw the mold spreading across the bundles and began explaining before she could ask: the desert nights were cold, the daytime sun baking, and the hold, sealed against the bilge, had turned the journey into a sweatbox — the cargo had steamed in its own moisture. The bundles packed in the middle of the hold — no ventilation — had fared worst, but every layer had taken some damage. Even the top layer, closest to the deck planks, was not untouched. When medicine stocks were small, a little mold, a little rot — you could still salvage enough to get by. But now the healing hall needed to treat. It needed volume. ”Rot” on this scale meant the entire shipment was compromised — not one bundle, not two, not three. Every bundle. And what that meant, Shafi understood without being told: the supply line from Thebes could not be trusted.

She crouched on the ferry-crossing stone quay and sorted through all four bundles. The herbs that were still fully dry she laid to the left. The ones with the faintest damp — still salvageable — went to the right. The fully molded ones she set aside in a separate pile. She sorted bundle by bundle, stalk by stalk, checking every piece, her finger giving each stem a single testing press. The ones whose fibers had already turned brittle — those she separated. The wind blew across the quay as she sorted, and with every gust, a puff of mold spores lifted from the discard pile, drifting out across the water like a pale, sickly smoke. When she finished sorting, she stood, and the imprint of the quay’s paving stones was pressed deep into both her knees. She looked down at the surviving herbs — the usable portion of four full cargo bundles — and her lips moved, silently counting. Four out of ten. Fungal loss: thirty percent. Unusable. And then, from the leather case at her hip, she pulled out her boundary-leather tally-sheet and, in the blank space below the medicine inventory records, wrote the first entry of a new log. ”Shipment 001 — Date received. Loss to fungal bloom: thirty percent. Unusable.” On the next line: ”Cause — transit hold, bottom bilge, high temperature, no ventilation.”

After writing those two lines, she added a third, in characters smaller than the rest: ”Suggested improvement — reed-mat liners for cargo holds, packing bundles separated by ventilation gaps.” When she finished writing, she checked the entries once more, making sure every character was crisp and legible — so that whoever else read this page, months from now, would not misread a single number. Then she closed the leather sheet, laid it across her knees, and waited for the ink to dry before folding it.

What Shafi was doing, in that moment on the ferry quay, went beyond the duties of a medicine apprentice. She was beginning to learn how to manage a supply chain: to log every incoming shipment by batch number, to assign every storage position a slot code, to track the shelf life and restock interval of every herb. In time, she would build an inventory system for the healing hall — a system that turned a single pharmacy’s herb stock into a living ledger, where every leaf had an entry and every entry could be traced back to its source.

Kamon received Lu Zhu’s letter at the foundation trench. Two nights earlier, Lu Zhu had gone to find Kamon and asked: those water-worn fieldstones from the riverbank — could they still be used in the healing hall’s foundation bedding? The stones had originally been allocated to the riverbank approach road — the one leading up from the ferry crossing — but the approach road’s fill quota had been cut by a third. The stones — water-washed, surface-smoothed, their coarse grain worn glass-slick — were still sound. Kamon received the letter while crouched on the bedding sand beside the foundation trench. He did not put down his trowel. He held the trowel flat and read the letter across it. The bedding sand — the layer beneath the stone base course — had been tamped to exactly half the thickness of the quarry gang’s supporting fill. He walked to the stone pile, and from the section where the river-washed stones were stacked, he pulled one out. Its surface was not true — not the flat-dressed face of quarry stone — but when his finger traced across the water-polished grain, he felt it: dense, solid, no hidden fracture lines. The river had already done the testing. ”These stones aren’t rejects. They’re the survivors — the ones the water couldn’t break. We’ll use them.” He wrote the requisition on the spot, then added one more line: ”Sort the river-washed stones by size — use the largest for the foundation bedding, the medium for the wall-base fill, the smallest in the blind-drain gravel layer. Don’t mix them. Mixing creates void pockets.”

That same morning, the stone pile at the quarry intake was split into three size-grades and sent up the construction road to the healing hall site. The stones, when they arrived on the open ground, were stacked into a small mountain — a mountain built one stone at a time, hauled by hand from the riverbank. And the man stacking them — the quarry foreman — stacked differently from everyone else. He did not toss them. He did not tip them into a pile and walk away. He set each stone beside the last, one by one, his hand pressing flat against each surface, feeling for the slope. Every stone in that pile sat at the same gradient — the gradient Kamon had set with the inked string-line. The string had snapped across the ground hours earlier, and when the quarry foreman finished stacking, he stood back and looked at the pile for a long time, confirming that every stone’s bearing face matched the slope. Then he laid his hand on the pile — one stone at a time, pressing down on each — and every stone shifted exactly the depth of one fine dust particle, settling into the pile’s own weight.

Mery, walking past, caught sight of the slope. He had drawn sloped water-drainage sections on paper — the standard cross-section symbols — but he had never seen one built in the field, had never seen a foreman’s hand lay a stone to grade by feel alone. He dropped to a crouch, traced a palm across the surface of one stone, and then looked up at the quarry foreman — the foreman who was still setting stone, his fingers moving between stones, searching for — something. Some hidden order in the grade.

”Those worn grooves on the stone — how do you read them?” Mery asked.

”No grooves,” the foreman said, without raising his head. ”I’m checking whether the slope you drew on the drawings — the water-drainage slope for the pharmacy — matches the angle of this stone.” Mery did not say anything. He stood there a moment, processing, then turned and crouched beside the stone pile. He pressed his own palm against a stone’s surface — and felt it. Yes. That angle. Then he stood and walked a full circuit around the still-unfinished ward building — its walls waist-high, the interior still open to the sky — and when he came back around to his tool case, he pulled out the pharmacy floor plan he had been working from. He found the blank space beside the pharmacy template and wrote, in small characters: ”Water-drainage slope — field-laid stone grade. Cross-reference against drawing after construction. Stone-grade method: manual hand-grade, stone by stone.” After writing, he put the drawing away, slid it into his tool case, then walked back to the foreman’s side, crouched down, and helped position the next stone, turning it by hand until its bearing face locked into the grade. And as he set it, he said, quietly, ”The worn grooves on the hand-graded stones — when I draw the grading diagram later, I’ll make the slope notation one degree steeper.”

The treatment ward’s ventilation-slot positioning and the door heights were opened up over the next several days. Imset settled the dimensions on the ward’s north and south walls — the ventilation slots were not positioned in the center of the wall, but offset southward, near the junction of roof and wall, so that warm, contaminated air would rise along the ceiling slope and be drawn out high, while fresh air entered low through the door gap and wall-seam vents, creating a natural convection current. Before he fixed the slot positions, he stood in the unfinished ward for a long time — standing in the wall’s shadow, feeling how the wind moved. He walked to the north wall and pressed his palm against it, testing the wall’s temperature. The north wall was cooler. The south wall warmer. Then he walked back to the center and, with his foot, measured the distance between the two walls. He drew a simple wind-direction diagram on the ground — airflow entering, crossing the ward, exiting — and at the precise point where the airflow’s path hung longest before leaving, he drew a single straight line. If he fixed the slot wrong, the crossing breeze would sweep the patient’s exhaled air across the ward before it escaped. If he fixed it right — at that exact position — the contaminated air rose straight to the ceiling, turned, and exited, never touching the patient on the far side of the room.

The old plasterer studied the slot positions. He stood under the wall, tilting his head to follow the slot layout — positions he had been fixing for forty years in temple sanctuaries, and he had never once had a slot placed at a height like this. None of his planned brick headers matched. He stood there a long time, then opened his mouth. ”Too high. If the patient’s head is this close to the slot, the draft will catch him. Open a second slot — one higher, one lower — and stagger them. On the west wall, the upper slot leads. On the east wall, the lower leads. One breaks the wind, one moves the air. A single slot lets the chill through. Two slots — one high, one low, one leading, one trailing — and the draft can’t settle.”

Imset sat on the ground, his finger tracing a series of one-two-one patterns in the dust — the temple wards he had overseen in Thebes, fifteen wards in total, and not one of them had been laid out with this slot arrangement. The temple wards had been built for the dying — a place to wait, not a place to recover. You did not need staggered ventilation for a man who was not expected to breathe the next morning’s air. But this ward — this hall — was built for the living. So he listened. And when the old plasterer wanted staggered slots, Imset said what he always said, faced with something that had no precedent: ”We have no way.”

The old plasterer did not argue. He turned without a word and walked back along the wall. He reset the slot positions. The slot he had just argued down — he moved it higher. The wall depth at the slot was now a brick and a half. He lashed a small reed bundle into the slot, leaving the reeds inside it loose — loose enough to let air pass, dense enough to break the wind’s force. And beside it, he added a secondary slot, smaller, set deeper — a fine-tuning slot. He did not turn to Imset when he finished. He simply pressed more mortar into the brick course around the slot, packing the joint so the reed bundle’s seat would not leak air around its edges. The reed bundle, when he slid it home, fit flush and tight.

Inside the treatment ward, the old plasterer had finished the window slots — all of them, every one — and then he did something unexpected. He stood inside the ward and stared up at the slots for a long time, then reached up and measured the interior depth of each slot with his hand. The thickness — a brick and a half at every opening. Then he closed his hand and opened it again. He had just drawn a boundary — a boundary whose threshold, inside and out, was a brick and a half thick. When the reed bundles were in place, they rested inside that boundary; when they were pulled, the air passed through it. He said nothing — no explanation — but everyone watching understood: that boundary was the line between sickness and health. If it held, the patients inside would live through the season.

The medicine shortage reached its crisis point just before the healing hall’s roof was closed.

Shafi, running her daily stocktake, found the dried pomegranate rind down to less than two bundles. The dried chamomile — even less. Three days’ supply, at current usage. She ran her tally one more time, then another — digging through the records, looking for something she might have miscounted. Two check-passes, three. The numbers on the page would not change. They were her own numbers, written in her own hand — every entry a single deliberate stroke. Dried pomegranate rind — current stock. Dried chamomile — current stock. Projected shortfall. She closed the ledger on her knees and held it there for half a breath, then stood and walked toward Old He. Her pace, as she crossed the yard, was slightly faster than usual, but by the time she reached the medical stall’s entrance, she had slowed back to normal. Old He did not need to see her hurry.

Old He was in the adobe-brick shelter’s corner — his own remaining herbs spread before him, and he was packing each one, bundle by bundle, back into its assigned slot in the medicine rack. He called this ”packing.” In truth, he had only three usable herbs left. He packed them, then unpacked them, then packed them again — just to confirm to himself that they were still there. When he handled the bone-setting herb, his hand paused. The bone-setting stick — a dark, dense root — was smeared with a tiny patch of something pale, something that had not been there before. Mold, just beginning. He scraped it off with his thumbnail, then retied the stick’s binding cord. The bone-setting herb — it had to last. If it rotted, there was no replacement. He murmured something under his breath — a phrase so quiet it was clearly meant for no one but himself.

”Uncle He — do you still have dried pomegranate rind?”

Old He looked up. He had lost weight since arriving at Akhetaten — his cheekbones pressed against the skin, the hollows beneath them the depth of a finger’s pad. He ran a hand over the medicine packets before him — left to right, then right to left, then left to right again. ”Gone. I gave the last to the stonemason’s apprentice the day before yesterday.” He paused, trying to remember what else there was. Then, from the very bottom of his case, he pulled out a small bundle. Inside, a single pale-green dried leaf. ”This — this is not pomegranate rind. It’s bone-setting herb. If you need it — for the internal fever — it can still work.”

Shafi took it and examined it. ”Let me keep it for now. Bone-setting herb is more bitter than pomegranate rind — harder to get down.” She stood to leave and hesitated. ”Uncle He — back in Thebes, the medicine always came through the river trade route, didn’t it?”

”The river trade route,” Old He said, retying the binding cord and placing the bundle back into his case. ”There was a time — before you were born — when the route went along the riverbank, and the man running goods was a private trader with a fleet of reed boats. His first partner was killed on the road. His second partner was killed in a raid. His third — the man who took over — I don’t know if he’s still alive. The route may be closed. I haven’t heard from him.” He tied the cord, then rested both hands on the bound bundle, and was silent a moment. ”Your master — he hasn’t asked about this, has he?”

”He hasn’t. I asked on my own.”

Old He nodded. He placed both hands on the medicine case, palm down on his knees. ”When your master’s last packet of herbs runs out — that’s when you’ll see him open his mouth.”

Shafi walked out of the shelter without looking back. She followed the riverbank toward the ferry crossing, her steps unhurried but planted solid, one foot after the other. The ferry-crossing wind blew upstream, smelling of river water and, somewhere far off, the smoke of cooking fires. She stopped at the edge of the ferry crossing, one hand on the stone mooring post beside the cargo boats — the boats that had brought the shipment of dried herbs, the boats whose captains had spent twenty years running the river, the boats whose captains had families and children and accounts to settle, and who were all now sitting idle in the shallows because the Theban priesthood had made it known: anyone who shipped medicine to Akhetaten would be marked. She crossed to the narrow boatman’s cabin — the one permanently moored at the crossing — where a single oil lamp was burning, beside it the unloaded cargo bundles, with the old boat captain sitting on the deck, a cup of water beside him pressing down on his tally-sheets. ”The word I have for you,” he said, sitting in the lantern’s glow, ”is that the Theban medicine market has frozen. The private trading crews — they can’t get through. Nekhem’s people have leaned on every merchant who handles medicine — leaned on the shipping manifests, the dock fees, the river tolls. The Nubian route — Meru’s people — has also gone quiet. The word is that the priesthood has put out a blacklist, and anyone who ships medicine to Akhetaten — their next cargo won’t clear the dock.”

”Nekhem’s doing?”

”It’s Nuya. He’s making the route impassable on his southbound return legs.” The old captain pushed the water cup forward across the desk. ”And I need to tell you — I’m not pressing you for anything. The man running goods said he’d wait — there’s always a way around, he said. There’s always another route.” He was not anxious. He was not trying to reassure her. He simply drank his cup of water, set it back on the desk, and asked: ”Noon tomorrow — do we start counting from noon tomorrow?”

”Afternoon,” Shafi said. ”The first shipment of dried chamomile — when it docks, the Theban end will have already held the next shipment back. And the price — they’ve marked it even higher. They’re not telling me the number. And I can’t pay what I don’t know.” He had been running this river for twenty years. When the priesthood wanted a trade route closed, they closed it. They were not trying to kill the healing hall — they were trying to bleed it dry. Every merchant still sitting at the Theban docks, afraid to load his cargo, was one more wound.

Shafi stood to leave. Her knee gave — she had been sitting too long. She walked to the cabin door and pushed it open. The river wind blew past her, snuffing the lamp. She stood in the wind a moment, then spoke. ”I haven’t told my master yet. The first shipment of dried herbs — mold. The pharmacy’s almost empty. And there may not be a second.”

The old captain watched her back as she left — did not answer. She left the cabin and followed the riverbank back toward the healing hall. Along the way, she catalogued every wild plant along the riverbank, one by one: the ones whose leaves, dried in the sun, could pinch-hit for dried pomegranate rind; the ones whose bark, crushed and steeped, could slow diarrhea; the ones whose roots, buried in clay and slow-roasted, held the faintest echo of chamomile’s cooling effect. Every leaf — she named it, and every name attached to a slot in the pharmacy. The plants blurred past as she walked, but her mind was fixed on the shelf positions, the same flow logic she had been tracing since the first day. By the time she reached the healing-hall construction site, it was fully dark, and she did not pause at the gate but went straight to the pharmacy. She pulled out her leather tally-sheet and added one more line in the section still blank: ”Wild-gathered substitutes, to be confirmed — sweet wormwood, one bundle. Riverbank source, unverified.” She wrote the character for ”unverified,” then tucked the sheet into the medicine chest’s bottom layer, beneath the cabinet and the wall, the moonlight falling across her hands as she pressed the sheet flat on her knees.

The news reached the encampment’s command shelter as Lu Zhu was reviewing Mery’s water-pipe layout. He had not stopped working — even after hearing the boat captain’s words, even after the confirmation that the supply line was being throttled — he was still standing beside the unfinished pipe trench, drawing pipe-routing revisions on the wooden plan with charcoal. ”Kamon — the pharmacy’s waste-drainage main. When you join the pipe, add one line of annotation to the joint: wastewater outflow goes to the settling basin, far side of the chemical pit. Keep the medicine-cabinet wall separate.” He drew a double line beneath the annotation. The double line, in his diagram code, meant this item was not to be altered. And the double line that ran beneath the annotation — that line had come straight from the medical hall’s design language, the language of flow: one direction only.

Mery crouched beside him and had not spoken. When Lu Zhu’s hand, reaching for the annotation, suddenly paused — his finger on the pipe-length’s measurement mark — Mery saw it. A hesitation. But not a hesitation of doubt. It was the hesitation of someone who had just measured one section of pipe, found the number, and stopped. Stopped for three full breaths. And then kept going — not resisting the stop, not pushing through it, but accepting it. And after accepting it, he stood and walked to the exterior wall of the ward building, tracing the water-pipe route from the settling basin all the way to the sand-bed filter’s outflow. He walked it for a long time, the moonlight casting his shadow across the tamped stone bedding — his shadow a single dark bar moving across the stone, tracing the pipe’s path, one stone at a time.

Then, back beside Lu Zhu, he crouched by the pipe-trench edge and said, ”The pharmacy is three spans short.” He paused, then tilted his head toward the pharmacy’s orientation — the angle that allowed the pharmacy to open fully to the ventilation slots, the angle whose air-exchange rate would outlast any interruption in the water supply. ”The angled air circuit.”

He did not say why. He did not say ”how to solve.” He simply stood at the trench’s edge, pulled a reed bundle from the supply stack — the same reed bundles that had been tied for the roof thatch — and wrapped it around the pipe joint where it met the pharmacy wall, then wrapped another layer, and another, each layer packed tight against the joint, down to the reed fiber. When the final layer had compressed to a seal, he leaned in close to the joint and blew against it. No air-leak sound, no seepage. Then he stood and brushed the reed-fiber dust from his palms, into the moonlight.

Lu Zhu did not answer. His charcoal paused at the final notation on the water-pipe annotation, and held there — the space of three breaths. It was not that he did not know how to join the pipe. It was that the solution — the one Mery had just demonstrated — had solved the problem before the problem had even been spoken. He looked at the joint, then said, his voice quiet: ”You go ahead and join the pipe. However you need to join it — join it. In time, the pharmacy’s layout will be a finished thing. The pipe won’t be.”

He stood and brushed the dust from his hands. The night wind, blowing across the river valley, spilled over the walls. The ward building’s walls, under the moonlight, carried a faint, living warmth — the warmth of stone that had soaked up the day’s sun. The stone facing, where the foundation course met the wall base, glowed a pale, luminous white. And that single, pale band — the color of moonlight on dressed stone — ran the full length of the pharmacy floor. The medicine cabinets stood empty. But below them, the pipe joints were sealed.

As night fell, Mery ran his hand across the reed-wrapped pipe joint one more time, confirming the seal. After confirming, he crouched in silence, and in the moonlight, measured the joint’s dimensions once more, then wrote one line in his notebook: ”Reed-wrap pipe-joint seal — temporary. Before the pharmacy’s roof is closed, fit a permanent ventilation-shaft access panel. The pipe joint’s dimensions — not one finger-width short of the plan.” He wrote this, then closed the book. And the handwriting on that page, in the moonlight, was the same steady, measured hand he had been writing with since the first day.
