Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 73: Chapter 9: The Temple’s Shell Is Done — The Great Ceremony Is Set

The last slab of stone was laid by Old Master Qu’s own hand.

It was the final paving stone at the square’s eastern edge — an unremarkable position, but the finishing work, Old Qu let no one else touch. He lifted the slab, settled it into its slot, and tapped it into place with a wooden mallet, a little at a time. When the stone sat flush with its neighbors, seam to seam, he straightened his back, handed the mallet to the apprentice beside him, and said:

”Finished.”

Two words landing, and the works went still for a breath — and then, with a roar, exploded.

”Finished!”

”The temple is finished!”

”We built the temple!”

The shouting spread from the square’s eastern edge, growing as it went. A straw hat went up into the air; a man hugged his tools and jumped and yelled; several young craftsmen made a rush at the altar, meaning to jump up onto it — and Kamon’s voice cut them off: ”The altar! That’s the altar!” The young men stopped short, but the grins on their faces could not be stopped. Old Qu stood where he was, watching the jubilant craftsmen, and suddenly raised his hand and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. His apprentice saw it and leaned in to ask what was the matter. Old Qu said: ”Sand in my eye.” The apprentice looked up at the sky — clear, not a breath of wind — and said nothing, only took his master’s mallet and held it against his chest.

The shout went around the works twice more before it quieted, and even then the men kept finding each other’s eyes and grinning. The mallet in the apprentice’s chest was the only thing in the yard that held still; it had been in Old Qu’s hand for forty years, and the hand that had laid the last stone of the last temple of a working life had passed it on without a word. The apprentice did not know, yet, that he would keep it for the rest of his own working life; he only knew that it was warm, and that it mattered.

In the last half month before the finish, everyone on the works had been holding a knot of tension.

The main structure had stood for a month already; what remained was all fine work: filling joints, trimming edges, polishing, sweeping. Fine work wears a man down. The craftsmen bent over by day, gouging inch by inch, and at knock-off they still turned back to look at their own stretch of ground, the way a man looks at his newly turned field. A hot-headed young man complained: ”The big work’s done. What’s left is chicken-scraps — why pick at it?” Old Qu heard him, dragged him to the west end of the square, and pointed at one slab on the ground: ”Do you see it? The corner of this slab stands a leek-leaf higher than the one beside it. A man steps on it and feels nothing. The sun shines on it, and the shadow bends a line. On the day of the ceremony, ten thousand eyes will be on this square. One bent shadow — that’s the god’s face bent.”

The young man crouched, felt the slab for a long time, and re-seated it.

He had felt, under his fingertips, what the old master meant: the difference of a leek-leaf’s thickness, invisible to the eye, present to the touch — and present, in its way, to the sun. The temple’s whole craft was made of such differences. The columns differed by spans, the slabs by leek-leaves, the shadows by hairs; every one of them had been argued over, measured, and settled, and the settling was the craft. The young man re-seated the slab twice more that evening, and slept well for the first time in weeks.

From that day on, no one called fine work chicken-scraps.

From the first day of construction to this day, the temple works had run two hundred and seventeen days.

In those two hundred and seventeen days, they had rammed soft earth, raised forty-eight columns of uneven heights, laid slabs on a slope too gentle for an ant to feel, and dotted a wall that carried voices. Two hundred and seventeen days ago, this had been a cleared stretch of ground with a circle drawn on it; two hundred and seventeen days later, the open-air altar, the columned square, the side colonnades and low walls, the service storehouses — all of it stood here, one thing after another.

The number meant nothing to the crowd that had gathered for the shouting; it meant everything to the men who had lived it. Two hundred and seventeen days was a season of their lives: of hands cracked by the cold, of backs bowed over the paving, of the one night when the moles had been caught at the timber and the whole works had gone quiet with anger. They had not counted the days as they worked; they had counted the courses and the slabs and the shadows. The number came out even, in the end, and the evenness was what the shouting was for.

Lu Zhu stood at the position of the altar, looking at the square full of people. He did not shout, and he did not smile. He only stood there for a long time, and then crouched, and laid his hand on the altar platform beneath his feet.

The stone was warm. The sun had been on it all day.

That evening, when the craftsmen had gone, Lu Zhu walked a circuit of the square alone. He walked slowly, running the two hundred-odd days through his mind once more: the dark-faced man who called the ramming chant, the moles who had scraped the foundation loose at night, the wooden shim in the column storehouse, the equinox sunlight flooding the altar, the winter solstice’s calibration line, and the day of the voice test, when a whole square of hands went up at once. He reached the rough-surfaced wall at the west end, stopped, and pressed his palm flat against it.

He had walked this circuit in every weather — in the first cold of the foundation, in the heat of the column-raising, in the wind of the equinox eve. The square had grown under his feet the way a child grows, and like a child, it had taught him things he had not known it was teaching: that a foundation could be judged by its sound, that a wall’s temper could be read by touch, that a voice could be given a road. The palm against the rough surface was not inspection; it was leave-taking, and the leaving was of a particular kind — the kind where what is left stays behind.

The wall was cool, and grainy, like a giant whetstone.

”Our craft,” he said, low, ”is all in here.”

The dusk crept in from the east, and the square darkened. But Lu Zhu knew that tomorrow the sun would come in again — from the east edge to the west edge, not a hair off. That was the rule he had set for this temple: the sun is here, so the temple is here.

The completion inspection came three days later.

There were many inspectors. The Chief Overseer led the party; behind him came the officials of the public works office, the clerks of the military office, and two stewards sent by the royal house. The party entered by the east gate and followed the route Lu Zhu had laid out: first the foundation — Meri had his men re-measure a dozen-odd settlement points, and the error came out smaller than that of the official warehouse’s sample granary; then the columns — all forty-eight, checked with plumb lines, every one dead vertical; then the altar — its platform’s level tested three times by Old Qu’s water-bowl method; and last, the sound — Lu Zhu stood on the altar and spoke in a low voice, and the officials at the square’s far end raised their hands to show they had heard, clear.

The officials asked questions as they walked. When they came to the sound, a clerk from the military office refused to believe it; he ran to the farthest corner of the square and said: ”Master Builder — speak even softer. Let’s see if it still works.” Lu Zhu stood on the altar and said, in a voice barely louder than a whisper: ”Whether it works — you be the judge.” The clerk stood in the corner, stunned, and suddenly slapped his thigh: ”A marvel! A true marvel!”

The clerk’s disbelief had been honest, and his conversion was honest too — he had come to the inspection prepared to find trickery, because his office dealt in tricks. A voice that walked two hundred paces with no one shouting was, to his training, either a fraud or a miracle, and the ledger-keeping part of his mind could not tell the two apart. He walked back across the square slowly, and the officials who watched him come understood, from the look on his face, that the ledger had found a new column in it.

The two royal stewards were men of the world; there was no temple of Thebes, large or small, they had not entered. All the way along the inspection, they exchanged glances, and the glances grew more solemn with every exchange. When they reached the north side, one of the stewards stopped and asked Lu Zhu: ”The temple of Amun at Thebes — its main hall runs a hundred-odd paces deep, and standing outside the hall, a man cannot make out one word the priests say. Your square is larger than that hall — how can every word land in the ear?”

”The walls are different.” Lu Zhu said. ”The hall’s walls swallow the sound. This square’s walls scatter it. One hides; one releases.”

The two stewards looked at each other, and asked no more.

They asked no more because they understood, in that instant, what they were looking at: not a cleverer building, but a different kind of building — one built on the principle that the god’s words belonged to everyone who could hear them. The old temples had been built to hide; this one had been built to show. The stewards had spent their careers in the service of the hiding kind, and the difference between the two did not need to be explained to them twice.

The last stop on the inspection was the service storehouses. They stood on the square’s north side — three rooms: one for the sacrificial vessels, one for the lamp oil and torches, one left empty for the ceremony’s odds and ends. Kamon took the party through the three rooms, checking locks, doors, and beams; the officials signed the ledger.

The Chief Overseer said little through the whole inspection. He walked slowly, looked closely, and when he had seen everything, stood in the middle of the square, turned a full circle, and said to Lu Zhu: ”This temple is brighter than any I have ever seen.”

”It was meant to be bright.” Lu Zhu said.

When the signing was done, the Overseer put away the acceptance ledger and said: ”From tomorrow, this temple is handed over to the sky and to the people.”

When the signing was done, the Overseer put away the acceptance ledger and said: ”From tomorrow, this temple is handed over to the sky and to the people.”

The royal envoy arrived three days after the inspection.

The envoy rode a white horse with four attendants, coming from the direction of Thebes. He walked a circuit of the temple square, listened to the voice-carrying once, and then read the royal decree aloud, before everyone:

”The main body of the Great Temple of Aten is complete — a work for the realm. By the pharaoh’s command, ten days from now, the first public sacrificial ceremony shall be held in the temple square. Every citizen of the city may attend and watch.”

When the last four characters were read — ”every citizen may attend and watch” — the craftsmen gathered around the square straightened their backs as one.

”Every citizen may attend and watch.” The envoy closed the decree and said to Lu Zhu: ”Master Builder — the staging of this ceremony is now in your hands. Ten days — is it enough?”

”It is enough.” Lu Zhu said.

Before he left, the envoy drew Lu Zhu aside and lowered his voice: ”Master Builder — one word of advice, from me. On the day of the ceremony, all sorts of people will be among the watchers. The pharaoh trusts this temple — but on the Thebes side...” He paused. ”You know what I mean.”

”Thank you.” Lu Zhu said. ”I know.”

The envoy nodded, mounted, and rode away. Lu Zhu stood where he was, watching the party vanish down the official road. The envoy’s words confirmed the judgment he had been waiting for: the ceremony would not be only a ceremony.

He had known it since the equinox — known it in the way a builder knows a beam will carry: not from fear, but from having weighed the load. The temple had taken the old priests’ most precious thing — the hidden voice, the hidden light — and put it in the open where anyone could use it. The men who had lived on that hiddenness would not let it go without a fight, and the only stage large enough for their fight was the ceremony. The envoy’s warning was not news. It was the confirmation that the news had already arrived, from every direction at once.

The news from the western line arrived in these same days.

Seb’s letter came into the new capital with Meru’s caravan. Lu Zhu broke the seal; the first line was in Seb’s hand: ”The western line’s first battle — Date-Grove Village — won.” The letter carried a copy of Horenheb’s battle report: ”A small enemy raiding party attacked Date-Grove Village; soldiers and civilians together repelled it; two wounded, none dead. The village-defense method is complete; the court may rest easy about the western line.”

Lu Zhu read the letter twice and handed it to Kamon. Kamon read it, and said: ”The western line stands.”

”It stands.” Lu Zhu said. ”The wall stands, and the people stand with it. This is the finest gift the ceremony could ask for.”

He said it because it was true in two senses at once: the wall itself, and the way it had been held — by farmers and women and boys who had decided the wall was theirs. That was the same thing the temple was meant to prove, on the other side of the desert: that the people’s own hands could hold what the old powers said only they could hold. The two victories were one victory, and it had come in time for the ceremony.

That evening, Lu Zhu wrote the western news into his reply to Horenheb. The letter mentioned the ceremony in one line only: ”In ten days, the new capital’s temple holds its first sacrifice; the whole city will watch. The western line’s wall is the new capital’s foundation. When the ceremony is past, both our sides can draw an easy breath.”

What he did not write was this: on the day of the ceremony, beneath the sea of people in the new capital, there might lie something like the thing beyond the western sand ridge. Only the western enemy stood in the open — the new capital’s stood in the dark.

After nightfall, Lu Zhu called the core people to the rear courtyard of the official warehouse.

A ring of them sat in the courtyard: Kamon, Meru, Meri, Imset, Shafi, and the Chief Overseer. Lu Zhu wasted no words; he opened straight:

”Ten days. The ceremony’s ground must be prepared to the standard of a battle.”

He crouched and drew a rough plan with charcoal: the altar in the middle; north of it, the officials’ area; east and west, the people’s viewing areas; south, the passage for the sacrificial procession. Between the four areas, ropes marked the boundaries; no area crossed another. The people entered by the east and west gates and left by the same direction — like a granary’s flow: in only, no returning; out only, no coming back.

”How many people can the viewing areas hold?” Lu Zhu asked.

”By the square’s dimensions,” Meru said, ”packed tight, four thousand. With room to breathe, a little over three thousand.”

”Plan for thirty-five hundred.” Lu Zhu said. ”Water — yours, Meru. When the crowd pours out, the worst dangers are trampling and thirst.”

The number thirty-five hundred had been chosen with the same care as the column heights: large enough to hold the city’s crowd, small enough to hold it safely. Lu Zhu had watched crowds all his life — at market festivals, at granary openings — and he knew that the danger of a crowd lay not in its size but in its density: a crowd that could move was a crowd that could breathe, and a crowd that could breathe was a crowd that could be led out again. Thirty-five hundred was the number where the square’s space and the city’s patience came out even.

”I’ve stocked the water.” Meru said. ”Two hundred jars, a hundred bowls. Not enough — I’ll fire more.”

”Medicine?” Lu Zhu looked at Imset.

”One temporary medical post at each of the square’s four corners.” Imset said. ”Shafi mans them with the pharmacy boys. Heatstroke, crush injuries, fainting — all handled on the spot.”

”Enough medicine?”

”Stocked for five thousand, one day.” Shafi took up the thread. ”Agastache, mint, styptic cloth, splints — nothing missing. I’ll have the four posts’ medicine chests packed tonight, labeled box by box.”

”Stocked for five thousand,” Imset said, ”is the number I would have chosen. The ceremony’s crowd is only the visible part of the city; the sick and the old who cannot come will draw on the hall’s stores in the days after. Stock for the day, and the day after too.”

”The posts’ positions,” Lu Zhu said, ”must be out of the wind. The crowd will be dense; when the wind rises, the medicine smell scatters and the people press toward it.”

”I’ve chosen them.” Shafi said. ”All on the lee sides of the columns.”

”Security?” Lu Zhu looked at Kamon.

”My men — eighty of them.” Kamon said. ”Forty in the open, forty hidden. Thirty around the altar; whoever comes near, we ask their business first.”

”Not enough.” Lu Zhu said. He put the charcoal on the people’s areas of the plan. ”On the day of the ceremony, what I fear is not crowding — it’s a shout from the confusion. This square carries voices; one shout, and the whole city hears. With a sea of people, if hearts begin to stir, not even the gods could calm them.”

He had seen the power of the square’s voice tested, and he had built it himself — which meant he knew its dangers better than anyone. The same slope that carried a shy laborer’s ”I’d like a drink of water” to two hundred ears would carry a false shout of punishment to ten thousand. The square could not be unmade; it could only be watched. And watching, on that scale, had to be organized like a siege.

The courtyard went still. The Overseer asked: ”Then what do you propose?”

”Divide by sectors.” Lu Zhu said. ”The people’s areas split into sectors; each sector has a fixed number of people, fixed positions, front and back. Each sector gets two guild craftsmen as wardens. The sound comes off the altar and everyone hears it — but who shouted first, the warden must watch.”

Kamon nodded: ”This method is good. Sector by sector, the great flow cannot disorder.”

”And one more thing.” Lu Zhu said. ”The dispersal. After the ceremony, four thousand people walk out, and the city has only so many roads. The order of leaving must be arranged: first the northern officials’ area, then the eastern people’s area, last the western. Let them go in batches. At the crossroads, Meru’s men hold up signboards.”

”I’ll have the boards made.” Meru said. ”Wood planks, whitewashed, with characters on them. Those who cannot read follow the ones ahead.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu drew the last of the rules on the ground, and tapped the center of the plan once. ”Ten days. Enough.”

When the meeting broke up, Imset stayed behind.

The courtyard was left with only him and Lu Zhu. The night wind came over the wall, blurring the charcoal plan on the ground. Imset looked at the drawing, and suddenly said: ”The old temple’s priests were best at choosing their moment.”

Lu Zhu looked at him.

”I spent half my life inside the temple.” Imset said. ”The priests had a few stock tricks. One was sound — the hall’s echo, which they called an oracle. One was shadow — a figure moving behind the curtain, which they called the god appearing. And one was sickness — something mixed into the incense smoke, making men dizzy and blurred, which they called the god’s punishment. All three were meant for use when the crowd was thick. The thicker the crowd, the more the hearts stir — and the truer the false looks.”

He spoke without rancor — a man describing the machinery of the house he had once served, the way a physician describes an illness he has seen a thousand times. There was no anger in it, because there was nothing left to be angry at: the tricks were old, the tricks were known, and the only question was whether the new temple’s people would recognize them when they came. He had spent his life learning to read those tricks from the inside; it was a strange turn of fate that the knowledge would be most useful on the day the new temple opened its doors.

”On the day of the ceremony, the crowd will be thickest.” Lu Zhu said.

”Exactly.” Imset said. ”So I say this before the day: whatever strange sound, strange shadow, strange sickness appears that day — first ask what made it. Not who sent it.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He picked up the charcoal and wrote four characters at the edge of the plan:

”Check first. Believe after.”

”Those four characters,” Imset said, ”are the most important rule of the day of the ceremony.”

”Those four characters,” Imset said, ”are the most important rule of the day of the ceremony.”

The day after the ceremony’s news spread, Hapy rode back to the new capital through the night.

He did not even wash the quarry dust off; he ran straight to the square and walked three circuits around the altar. When he was done, he found Lu Zhu and dropped a stack of stone ledgers on the table: ”Master — if the ceremony needs any stone, say the word. The quarry has two crews standing by, day or night.”

”Nothing’s missing.” Lu Zhu said. ”All the stone is in.”

Hapy rubbed his hands together and laughed a low laugh: ”Then I’ll come and watch on the day of the ceremony, too. I’ll stand on the west side — watching it for my quarry crew. They can’t come; the quarry can’t go unmanned.”

”You should come.” Lu Zhu said. ”The foundation of this temple holds your stone.”

After Hapy left, Kes came. He worked with the Nubian caravan and, hearing of the ceremony, had ridden up from the south specially. He walked a circuit of the square and said: ”Master — this square is ten times the size of my tribe’s gathering ground. If we ever build a meeting ground back home, we’ll build it like this.”

”Then you’d have to calculate the sun first.” Lu Zhu said. ”Every place’s sun is different.”

”I know.” Kes said. ”I’ll learn.”

Neither apprentice was idle. After Hapy returned to the quarry, he had a batch of the tidiest crushed stone picked and sent by donkey cart to the square, spread on the ramps of the four entrances — with the ceremony’s crowds, the crushed stone on the ramps kept feet from slipping. The stone was a small thing, and it was exactly the kind of small thing Hapy had learned to see: a quarryman’s eye for the place where feet would be heaviest and the ground least forgiving. The four ramps would carry ten thousand crossings on the day; the crushed stone would catch every one of them.

Kes stayed, helping Kamon’s men stretch the sector ropes. He was tall, with long arms, and the rope-stretching went fast and straight in his hands. When it was done, he looked back over the grid of lines crossing the whole square, and said: ”This looks like marking out stalls for my hometown market. Except they mark out trade — you mark out people.”

”People are harder to mark than trade.” Kamon said. ”Get a trade wrong, and you can refund the money. Get a person wrong, and there’s no refund.”

Kes clicked his tongue, said nothing, and drove the last rope’s stake a little deeper.

Old Qu talked less and less these days.

After the finish, he still came to the works every day. He did not work anymore; he squatted by the altar, watching the sky, the columns, the calibration lines on the ground. Someone urged him to go home and rest. He said: ”Each day I look is one day fewer. I’ve built temples all my life; this is the last one. From now on, this temple belongs to the god and to the people — not to me. Let me look a while longer.”

Old Calendar-Keeper worked out the ceremony day’s sun again.

He did not use Lu Zhu’s figures; he worked from the old rolls himself — Thebes’s noon shadow length, adjusted for the new capital’s position, counted back day by day. He calculated for three days, and wrote four characters on a sheepskin: ”Late Si hour, early Wu hour.”

Not a character off from Lu Zhu’s hour.

The three days of calculation had been the old man’s own quiet offering — the last thing he could give the temple that had given his records a second life. He had worked in his room with the door shut, the old rolls spread around him like old friends, checking each figure twice the way he had checked them for forty years. When the answer came out identical to the Master Builder’s, he felt something settle in his chest that he had not felt since the old temple closed: the sense of being needed, and being right.

When Old Calendar-Keeper handed the sheepskin to Lu Zhu, his hands did not tremble. He said: ”Master Builder — this time, two ledgers agree. The sun you calculated and the sun my master’s master recorded — they are the same sun.”

”The sun has always been the same.” Lu Zhu said. ”It is only that no one ever used it to build a temple.”

Meru had been rerouting his trade roads in these days too.

For the ten days around the ceremony, the alliance’s caravans all changed route, skirting the roads around the square, moving goods in and out by the small west gate. His men worked until they could not stand straight; one of them grumbled: ”The ceremony isn’t trade. Why does the boss fuss so much over it?” Meru heard it, knocked his pipe out on the table, and said: ”The ceremony isn’t trade. But the ceremony’s thousands of mouths — that is trade. Other people’s trade done well is what makes our trade last.”

The medical posts’ rehearsal came four days before the ceremony.

Shafi took the four pharmacy boys and ran each of the four posts once: the distance from post to water point, the route from post to the nearest exit, the line of sight from post to altar. When the running was done, she changed two things: the west post’s medicine chest moved to the lee of its column, and the east post gained a cloth screen — when the sun swung west, that position baked.

The rehearsal had a rigor to it that came from Shafi’s ledger-keeping heart: she measured the posts the way she measured everything — in distances, in times, in the number of steps a boy could carry a chest before his arms gave. A post that was a hundred steps from the nearest exit was a post that would lose a fainted man’s treatment to the crowd; a post that could not see the altar was a post that could not watch for the crush when the ceremony reached its peak. She moved the chest, hung the screen, and measured again.

”The posts,” she told Lu Zhu, ”I’ll watch until the dispersal. After the dispersal, I count the chests — not one missing, and only then is it done.”

Lu Zhu said: ”Good. Call me when you count.”

The ceremony’s news had gone around the whole city by the next day.

The people of the new capital treated it like New Year. Some went to the square the very same day, and came back saying, ”That square — the ground is all slanted, but you can stand anywhere and hear everything.” Those who had not gone were half-doubtful and made appointments to see it the next day. In the markets, the cloth-sellers, the date-sellers, the flatbread-sellers all did three-tenths better business — everyone said they meant to dress well for the ceremony, to eat well, and to get there early for a good place.

The talk had the particular texture of a city on the eve of something: not quite holiday, not quite fear — the hum of a thousand separate households making the same preparations, for the same day, for reasons that were each slightly different and all the same. A city that had built its temple with its own hands was about to watch the temple’s first public day; the watching mattered as much as the temple.

The ferry crossing on the river flats was busiest of all. Villages upriver, downriver, and across the river were all sending people to the new capital. The ferrymen doubled their fares and still sailed full, boat after boat. An old man from a fishing village had boarded the night before and sat in the hold all night, just to hold a place near the front. The ferryman asked him if it was worth it. He said: ”I’ve lived most of my life without ever setting foot in a temple. This one — you don’t even have to go inside to see it. Worth it.”

The city’s inns were all full. Those who could not get rooms borrowed relatives’ houses; when the relatives were full, they pitched shelters at the market’s edge. Meru had cleared three open plots in the market in advance, set aside for visitors’ shelters. His men registered them one by one — how many people to a shelter, all written down.

The registration was Meru’s doing, and it served two purposes at once: it kept the shelters orderly, and it gave the city a count of its visitors. A merchant’s ledger, kept for the ceremony’s guests, would be worth more than a rumor in the days after — Meru had learned, in his years on the trade roads, that a city that knew how many strangers it held was a city that could feed them, and a city that could feed them was a city that would not see them turn hungry into a crowd. The three plots filled by the second day, and the registration book grew fat, and Meru’s men counted the shelters every evening, the way their boss counted everything.

There were grumblers too.

”Everyone in the city going? Won’t the old gods punish us?” An old woman of the old school said it to everyone she met: ”The temple of Amun is closed, and now they worship Aten in the full sun — this, this...” She dared not finish the sentence; she only shook her head.

”Don’t worry.” The young flatbread-seller’s wife beside her laughed. ”The Master Builder’s temples — the granaries never damp, the healing hall heals people. Which one of them ever went wrong?”

”That’s buildings.” The old woman said. ”This is a god.”

”The god is the same.” The young wife said. ”The sun shines on us every day, and no one has come to harm.”

The old woman could not argue her down; she went off huffing. But after two steps she turned back and asked, in a low voice: ”On the day of the ceremony — where’s the best place to stand to see it all?”

The young wife laughed out loud: ”I thought you were afraid of the punishment?”

”I’m asking for my grandson.” The old woman said.

The exchange was repeated, in a dozen variations, all over the city in those days — the fear and the longing arguing in the same mouth, and the longing winning every time. The old woman’s grandson would stand on his grandmother’s shoulders on the day of the ceremony, and she would hold him up and forget, for the length of the ceremony, that she had ever been afraid. The city was full of such grandmothers, and the temple had been built for their grandsons.

Conversations like this filled the streets of the new capital in those days. The afraid, the expectant, the curious — all of them were bound for the same day.

Lu Zhu did not rest a single day of those ten.

By day he was on the square, arranging positions, drawing lines, testing the sound; at night he went home and revised the drawings. He went through the ceremony’s order seven times: the sacrificial procession enters by the south gate, walks the central axis, and mounts the altar; the three chief officiants, once in place, offer the prayers first, then the address, and finally declare the ceremony open; the officials’ area lies north, the people’s east and west. Every pass, he listed separately every place where something could go wrong — twenty-three places in all — and filled them in, one by one.

The seven passes were not repetition; they were seven different men’s eyes. On the first pass he saw the order as the officiants would; on the second, as the officials would; on the third, as a mother with a child would; on the fourth, as a merchant watching the crowd would; and on the later passes, as the men who meant to break the day would. Each set of eyes found its own fault, and the faults, one by one, went into the list of twenty-three. The list was the ceremony’s true architecture — the invisible building inside the visible one.

Every pass, he listed separately every place where something could go wrong — twenty-three places in all — and filled them in, one by one.

Among the twenty-three, several were places no one else would have thought of.

One was shadows. At late-Si, early-Wu hour, the ceremony’s hour, the sun came from east-by-south. The officials’ area lay north; the officials’ shadows would stretch long and fall across the western slice of the people’s area. Shadows were harmless — but the people would press together to avoid them, and pressing, disorder the sectors. On the plan, Lu Zhu moved the officials’ area three paces north; the shadows now fell exactly on the boundary ropes.

The shadow calculation was the twenty-three places’ most typical entry: a thing no one would have thought of, which would have caused a disorder no one would have understood. The people would not have known why they were pressing and shuffling; they would have only felt crowded and wrong. The three paces of the officials’ area were cheaper than any explanation, and more effective than any order.

One was children. At a crowded ceremony, half-grown children squeezed in among the adults could not see the altar, and pressed forward; pressing, they got lost. Lu Zhu had Meru build a ”lost-child platform” on each of the square’s east and west sides — half a head taller than a man; a lost child stood on it, and the family could spot them at a glance.

The platforms cost two lengths of timber and an afternoon’s carpentry. Lu Zhu had included them not because lost children were likely — the city’s children were used to crowds — but because a single lost child crying in a packed square could pull a whole sector’s eyes away from the altar at the worst moment. The platforms were insurance against the one kind of disorder that needed no enemy at all.

One was shoes. The people of the new capital loved straw sandals; straw sandals did not slip on stone — until they were wet. On the day of the ceremony, water points stood at the square’s four corners; water spilled on the ground, people stepped in it, and a whole stretch went down at once. Lu Zhu had the water points moved outside the square, and fine sand scattered around each of the four.

The most important one was the light.

The ceremony was set ten days out; that day was neither spring equinox nor autumn equinox, and the sun would not fall dead center. Lu Zhu had calculated that day’s solar altitude and fixed the ceremony’s hour at the end of the Si hour and the beginning of the Wu hour — at that hour, the sun came from east-by-south, the altar’s face lay in full light, and the columns’ shadows fell back, slanting, outside the altar. On the drawing he wrote:

”That day, late-Si early-Wu: light fills the altar; no shadow upon it.”

Kamon saw it and asked: ”You’ve even calculated the ceremony’s hour?”

”The sun does not wait for people.” Lu Zhu said. ”So the people must wait for the sun.”

He also tested the sound. He had two craftsmen stand at different places in the people’s areas, taking turns listening, from morning to evening — three full hours of testing. When the wind was light, the whole field was clear; when the wind rose, the western corner went a little blurred. He had a waist-high screen of grass matting added in front of the west low wall — the matting drank the wind, and drank the stray noise too. When they tested again, the blurred place was clear.

The matting screen was the sound design’s last joint — the place where the square, which had been built to carry the voice, learned to protect it. The west corner’s blur had been a small thing, the kind of thing a lesser builder would have called ”good enough” and left. But the ceremony’s words would be spoken once, in front of the whole city; ”good enough” was not a standard that could be spoken twice. The screen went up, the test was run again, and the last dead corner closed.

”On the day of the ceremony,” he told Kamon, ”the sound must have no dead corners. A dead corner is where they’ll slip through.”

”I understand.” Kamon said.

For the sector wardens, Kamon chose forty guild craftsmen. All were old West Bank hands — sharp-eyed, careful, with carrying voices. Kamon called them to the material yard, pointed at the square’s plan, and assigned the sectors one by one. When the assigning was done, he said: ”For your sector, know how many come in and how many go out. Whoever seems wrong in the crowd, watch him first — don’t make a fuss, report to the hidden watch.” A warden asked: ”What counts as ’seems wrong’?” Kamon said: ”On the day of the ceremony, the whole city looks at the altar. Whoever’s eyes do not look at the altar — whoever’s eyes go slipping over the crowd instead — he is wrong.”

The sentence was the whole training in one line. In a square where every voice carried, the only people who would not watch the altar were the people who had come to watch the crowd — and the crowd-watchers, on that day, were either Kamon’s own or the enemy’s. The forty wardens repeated the line to themselves the way soldiers repeat a watchword, and each of them knew, without being told, that the eyes in their sector were now their responsibility as surely as the wall was the sentries’.

The day after the sectors were assigned, Kamon brought the forty wardens to the square for ”ground-familiarization.”

Ground-familiarization was walking. Each warden walked from his own sector to the nearest water point, then to the nearest exit, then back. Each walk, Kamon noted a number on the plan. The slowest was an old warden in the south of the east sector — his legs were slow and his eyes not good. Kamon did not replace him; he assigned him a fast-legged young man as a partner.

”The old have the old’s advantages.” Kamon said. ”Everyone in his sector has been his neighbor for decades. A strange face — he’ll know it with his eyes closed.”

When the walking was done, the forty wardens squatted at the square’s edge, each gnawing a wheat cake. Someone laughed: ”Our show is grander than the ceremony.” The man beside him said: ”On the day of the ceremony, we ARE the ceremony. Whether it disorders — that’s on us.”

Kamon heard, and said nothing. He looked up at the sky. It was clear, without a single cloud.

Three days before the ceremony, everything was nearly ready. Kamon made his last patrol of the square — the columns, the wall corners, the spaces behind the colonnades, the storehouses, one by one. He walked the way he had walked the works for two hundred days: unhurried, his eyes moving ahead of his feet, his hand going out to touch a joint, a wedge, a rope — checking, always checking, the way a mother counts her children in the dark.

When he came to the column storehouse on the north side, he stopped and stood for a long time. The storehouse wore a new lock; the gap in its rear wall had been sealed long ago — but he still walked a circuit around it, and had the contents counted out completely once more.

The storehouse was where it had all started — the shim, the switch, the night the moles were caught. Kamon had not forgotten a single detail of that night, and he did not intend the building to forget either. The new lock had been his idea, and the doubled night watch, and the rule that no column stock spent a night inside; every one of those rules was a scar the building wore, and scars, in Kamon’s trade, were what made a building trustworthy.

”On the day of the ceremony,” he told his men, ”the storehouses, the material yard, the tool rooms — all locked tight. If a single thing goes missing, I’ll hold every one of you.”

The Chief Overseer came to the square every day in those days.

His position had long since outgrown the stiff official who had once stood on his dignity. After the inspection, he sang the temple’s praises to everyone he met: the light is good, the sound is good, the ground is good, the walls are good. A colleague mocked him, saying the Overseer had been bewitched by a temple-builder. He did not take offense; he said: ”Go stand in the square yourself. Stand there, and you’ll know who has bewitched whom.”

In private, he once said to Lu Zhu, from the heart: ”Three years ago, when you first came to the new capital, I truly looked down on you. A wild-handed man from the West Bank — what could he know of building a capital? And now...” He sighed. ”Now I know: I sat in this office for half my life, handled so many projects, and the most worthy thing I ever did was to put you on this temple’s works.”

The confession had cost him something — a man who had spent his career standing on ceremony did not easily admit that the ceremony had been the least of it. But he had watched the temple rise, stone by stone, and the watching had changed the arithmetic of his life: the projects he had managed were counted in ledgers and roofs, and this one was counted in the way the city’s people would stand in the sun and hear their own god speak. He meant the words, and the saying of them had loosened something in his chest.

Lu Zhu said: ”The temple was built by everyone.”

”The temple was built by everyone.” The Overseer said. ”But the method that made it stand — that was yours.”

The craftsmen’s spirits in those days were not what they had been.

In the old days, when work ended, men dusted off and left. In these days, a few always lingered, sitting in the square — some bringing their wives, some their children. A rammed-earth worker brought his father; the two sat side by side on the west steps, neither speaking, just sitting. After a while the old man said: ”This ground is flatter than the kang in our house.” His son said: ”Of course. Four hundred-odd people rammed it for the better part of half a year.” The old man nodded, sat a while longer, and said: ”Your work — it was worth doing.”

The father had never said anything like that before — he had raised his son to work, not to be praised for it, and the two of them had shared thirty years of silences that were mostly fine. This silence, sitting on the ground his son had helped ram, was different in a way neither of them could name: the son’s work was no longer just his living, it was his gift to the city, and the father, for once, had the words to say what he saw.

More and more townsfolk came to look at the square. Some, embarrassed to look for nothing, helped the craftsmen carry foot-stools; some brought date-water boiled at home and offered it to Kamon on his rounds. Kamon did not drink it; he had it shared out among the working craftsmen. An old woman stood at the square’s edge for a whole afternoon; as she left, she caught a young craftsman’s sleeve and asked: ”Young man — the temple’s finished. Are you all leaving?”

”We’re not leaving.” The young craftsman said. ”We’ll keep charge of this temple. Wherever it breaks later, we’ll come and mend it.”

The old woman nodded and nodded: ”Good, good. That’s good. Something with someone to mind it — it won’t fall.”

She said it the way she had said it about her own house for fifty years — the plainest wisdom of the city: a thing with a keeper is a thing that lasts. The craftsman had meant the words as a simple statement of the guild’s new duty; the old woman had heard them as a promise. They were both right, and the promise, repeated from mouth to mouth across the city in the days before the ceremony, was one more stone in the temple’s foundation.

Old Qu took on apprentices one more time.

Not to teach craft — to show. He called several young craftsmen to the altar’s edge, pointed at the calibration lines on the ground, and said: ”Learn your craft well. From now on, this temple’s columns, walls, and ground will need people who know how to mend them. Those who can mend are one kind of people; those who understand the rules are another. If you can be both — then I’ll be at ease.”

He had spent the last months of his working life learning that the two kinds were not the same — a man could build a wall for forty years and never once ask why the shadow fell where it did; another could read the sky and never once lay a brick. The temple needed both, joined in the same hands, and the joining was the one thing he could still give it. The young craftsmen he had chosen were the best of the works — the ones whose hands were already steady and whose eyes were already asking questions.

The apprentices nodded. One asked: ”Master — and you?”

”Me?” Old Qu said. ”I’ll sit on the west steps and watch the sun. One more day of watching, one day fewer.”

He laughed at himself, first. The apprentices did not laugh.

Two nights before the ceremony, Lu Zhu walked the square alone once more.

This time he was not checking the works; he was checking the twenty-three places he carried in his memory. At each one, he crouched and looked, and made a mental check-mark. When he came to the column on the square’s east side, he lingered a little longer — the column that had been repositioned after the shim affair in the storehouse. He walked a circuit around it and laid his hand on its base.

The column was steady. Nothing.

But Lu Zhu could not shake the feeling that the night square was a little too still. He looked up at the sky. The stars were fine. Tomorrow, and the day after, would be clear.

”Everything is ready,” he said, low. ”It all comes down to that day.”

He did not add what he was thinking — that the quiet of the night square had the same texture as the quiet before a storm, and that a man who had built a city learned to read the stillness of his own works the way a sailor reads the sea. The column had told him nothing, and the nothing had told him something. He walked back to the warehouse with the feeling lodged in his chest, unnameable and unshakable, and he did not try to name it. Naming it would not change what the day would bring.

Kamon sat in the square at dusk, two days before the ceremony.

He sat on the west steps, looking at everything before him: the altar, the columns, the stone paving laid out in even rows, and the rough-surfaced wall he had dotted with his own crews. He thought of the day he had walked out of the West Bank — then, he had only wanted to find a livelihood for his craftsmen; he had never imagined that one day he would sit here, looking at a temple he had helped to raise.

He reached out and touched a column beside him. The stone was cool and smooth, almost as if it were alive.

”From a little West Bank stonemason to this day,” he said, low, ”it’s like a dream.”

The wind came up off the river, crossed the square, and carried the sentence a long way.

No one heard it. But Kamon knew: this sentence, from now on, would be heard by many people in this square.

In the days before the ceremony, the new capital’s lamps burned twice as many as usual.

Households in the city, in the villages, on the river flats — all kept their lamps burning into the second half of the night. The children were too excited to sleep; they lay by the windows counting lamps. The grown-ups went over their clothes again and again. The wind lanterns at the square’s four corners were already hung; on the day of the ceremony, the whole city would go there.

In the rear courtyard of the official warehouse, Lu Zhu went through the order once more. When he finished, he closed the plan and said to Kamon, who had stayed up with him: ”Everything is ready. What remains — depends on the sky, and on the people.”

”The sky I can’t manage.” Kamon said. ”The people — I’ll watch them.”

In Imset’s healing hall, Shafi was still checking the medicine chests. Four posts, four chests; she counted them again and again, and at last pasted a label on each — ”East,” ”West,” ”South,” ”North.” When the labels were on, she straightened and said to Imset: ”Master — on the day of the ceremony I want to go early. In position before the sky is light.”

”Go.” Imset said. He had been reading an old medical text by the lamp; he raised his head. ”Remember — at a ceremony, the physician is the invisible one. With you there, people’s hearts hold steady.”

On Meru’s caravan ground, two hundred water jars stood filled, ranked in rows, mouths covered with wet cloth. Meru stood in the middle of the yard, counting them one by one. When he reached the last, he said to the night watchman: ”This water is the ceremony’s life. One jar short — I dock a tenday of your wages.” The watchman rubbed his hands: ”Don’t worry, boss. I won’t sleep tonight.”

The two hundred jars were Meru’s quiet masterpiece — the part of the ceremony no one would see and everyone would need. He had argued for them against his own bookkeeper, who saw the jars as idle capital; he had won with a merchant’s arithmetic: four thousand people, one hot day, and the price of disorder. The watchman kept his word and did not sleep, and the jars stood in their rows, mouths wet, waiting for the morning they were made for.

Five days before the ceremony, someone began holding places at the square’s west end.

A few half-grown boys drew circles on the stone with rocks, saying the circles belonged to their grown-ups. Having drawn, they did not leave; they sat in the circles, waiting for dark. The patrol tried to shoo them; the boys clung to their circles: ”We were here first!” The patrol did not know whether to laugh or cry. In the end Kamon came, crouched down, and said to the boys: ”On the day of the ceremony, no one holds places. Everyone stands by sector — wherever you stand, you’ll see.” The boys were half-doubtful; they tilted their heads up: ”Wherever we stand, will we hear?” Kamon said: ”You’ll hear.” The boys erased their circles and scattered, laughing.

Kamon watched them run, and said to the patrol: ”From now on, answer anyone holding a place with those same words. The ceremony’s ground has no front row and no back row.”

The sentence was true in the plainest sense — the square’s voice carried to every corner, so the last row heard as well as the first — and it was true in a deeper sense too, which the boys could not yet know: the ceremony’s ground belonged to everyone who stood on it, and no one’s place was worth more than another’s. The boys had drawn their circles the way children draw any claim, and Kamon had erased the claims with a sentence, the way the square itself erased distance. It was the first lesson of the temple, taught to the youngest people in the city.

And at the ferry crossing on the river flats, a boat from the direction of Thebes came alongside. From it stepped several travelers in long robes. They kept their heads down, mixed into the bustling crowd, and went in the direction of the city.

No one noticed them.

They lodged at a small inn in the east of the city. The inn’s sleepy attendant opened two rooms for them. When one of the travelers paid, something showed for an instant from his sleeve, and was tucked back. The attendant did not see clearly; he remembered only that it had caught the lamplight, bright, like copper.

On the third night before the ceremony, the square was so still you could hear the wind.

The corner lamps were out; only the moon stood in mid-sky, laying the columns’ shadows on the ground, one after another, like strings a hand had spread out.

The night patrol’s light moved from the east end and back. In the places the light did not reach, a dark shape slipped out from behind the west low wall. It moved along the wall’s foot, light of step, and in a few strides reached a column on the square’s east side.

It had chosen its column with care — the one whose gap had been prepared, whose position the watchers’ lamps passed twice a night and never lingered on. The shape knew the patrol’s rhythm the way a man knows his own breathing: the light’s sweep, the pause at the corners, the two breaths of darkness in between. It had watched from the shadows for three nights, and this night it had come to finish the work.

It crouched, and put a hand into the gap between the column and its base — pushing something in. When it was in, the hand pressed it deeper with a fingertip, until it could not be seen.

Then it stood, and like a shadow, vanished into the night.

The wind came from the west, shook the shadows on the ground, and put them back as they were.

The next morning, the sun rose as usual. The square’s paving went white in the light; the forty-eight columns stood in the light, one by one, exactly as they had yesterday — straight, and true, and holding the shadows where the drawings said they would hold.

No one knew that one of them had something lodged in it now — a small thing, hidden in the dark between stone and stone, waiting for the city to look up at the sky.
