Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 89: Chapter 11: Two Lines Split — Grain Moved Across the Whole Country

The king’s order reached the city on the night of the third day.

The courier came by the old road — the road that had carried the grain runs and the medicine chests and the torch signals of three months. He came by a small boat from the south camp, with A-Tu waiting to receive him at the mouth of the side channel, the same channel the boats had used on the night the city was won. When the boat touched the bank, Mery had not yet slept — his lamp had not gone out in all these days. On the table in the granary’s back courtyard lay three drafts, each one a trial version of the ”three ledgers” he had been working through.

”Mery receives the edict.” The courier unrolled the yellow silk under the lamp and read it word by word.

The edict was not long. But every character of it was heavy as a sack of grain: the granary official Mery is appointed to the office of two-line grain coordination. The south line, the north line, the rear — three ledgers, all delivered into your hands. You stand within a besieged city; the ledgers lie a thousand li beyond. We trust that you will use the granaries as soldiers and the ledgers as walls, keeping both lines supplied and the people fed.

Mery knelt on the ground, listened to the end, and did not move for a long time. The yellow silk lay open before him, the characters of the edict standing in the lamplight, and the weight of them pressed down on his shoulders like a wall laid across them. He had kept accounts for years; he had never before been asked to keep a country.

”Master Mery,” the courier reminded him, ”receive the edict.”

Mery raised his head. He looked first at Lu Zhu. Lu Zhu stood in the lamplight and nodded to him.

”Your servant,” Mery said, ”accepts the order.” The three words came out steady — steadier than his legs, which had gone weak under him when the edict was read. The words of the edict had done what no siege had done: they had made the whole country a wall around him.

The courier left, the boat casting off in the dark, the oars fading. The room went quiet — the quiet of a room where a man has just been given a country. Mery stood before the table, holding the roll of yellow silk, as if holding a fire.

”Teacher,” he said suddenly — the words coming out before he could weigh them, the way fear comes out of a young man who has been holding it in — ”I am afraid.”

”Of what?” Lu Zhu asked.

”To manage one city’s granaries, I can manage.” Mery’s voice floated a little, the way a voice floats when its owner is not sure of the ground under it. ”To manage the granaries of all Egypt... the south and the north are hundreds of li apart, and I am in this city; my hands cannot reach out.”

”Your hands cannot reach out — but your ledgers can.” Lu Zhu said, and his voice was the voice of a man who had been through the same reckoning himself, years ago, when the first granary went up on the West Bank. ”Before, you managed grain — how much was in the storehouse. Now you manage accounts — how much ought to be where. What is in the storehouses depends on men; what is on the ledgers depends on you.” He paused. ”The pharaoh gave the three ledgers to you, not because you stand close to the grain — but because your ledgers stand close to the truth.”

Mery was silent — the silence of a man who has been handed a weight and is measuring his own arms against it. He was twenty years old, and the weight was a country; the measuring took a long moment, and when it was done, he did not set the weight down. After a long while, he rolled the yellow silk up carefully, the way a man rolls a thing he means to keep, and set it at the head of the table. Then he walked to the defense map — beside it, Lu Zhu had already drawn the three divisions for him: Thebes, the north, the new capital.

That night, Mery sat before the table until dawn.

He thought of many things, the way a man thinks in the small hours when the night is all his. He thought of the half-moldy sack of grain in the refugee camp — the sack that had taught him what hunger looked like when it was close enough to touch. He thought of the first granary he had helped Lu Zhu build at the West Bank’s village — the ramming of the first wall, the laying of the first floor, the smell of the first dry straw. He thought of the days at the new capital’s official granary when he had counted the grain grain by grain, until the numbers had become a second language to him. Thinking, he suddenly understood one thing: what he had learned all his life was not how to manage grain — it was how to keep grain alive. While the grain lives, the people live.

Near dawn, he spread a new sheepskin and took up his brush. When he wrote the first line, he paused, and made the characters two measures larger than his usual hand:

”Grain is the life of the people and the blood of the army. The one who moves it must use the granaries as soldiers, and the ledgers as walls — and a wall of ledgers is a wall that is written fresh every day.”

When it was written, he read it aloud to himself. Reading to the end, he smiled — and in the smile there was both timidity and a kind of hard resolve.

”Teacher,” he said, ”tomorrow morning, I want every granary keeper in the city to come to the official granary.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said, and there was something in the single word that Mery would remember for the rest of his life — the sound of a teacher handing his student the whole board. ”Tomorrow morning, this back courtyard is your command tent — and a command tent is where orders are given, and where the one who gives them learns to stand behind them.”

At dawn the next day, a new map lay spread on the stone table of the granary’s back courtyard.

It was a map Mery had drawn through the night — the charcoal worn down to a stub, the lamp refilled twice, the ruler a straight edge of bamboo. The drawing was not fine, but the three colored divisions were clear, the way a thing is clear when it has been thought through before it is drawn. The south division was painted with Thebes and the south camp; the north division with the northern border and the border wall; the middle division with the new capital, the West Bank’s village granaries, and the quarry. Between the three divisions, arrows were drawn in charcoal — arrows going south, arrows going north, arrows coming back.

”From today,” Mery stood before the stone table, speaking to the granary keepers filling the courtyard — the old keepers in their worn coats, the young clerks with their counting-rods — ”the grain of Egypt is divided into these three divisions. The south division feeds the mouths of the city and the soldiers of the south camp. The north division feeds the relief army going north and the craftsmen building the wall. The middle division is the main storehouse — the new capital’s official granaries, the West Bank’s village granaries, and the boats on the river all count as the middle division. Between the three divisions, the grain must flow. The direction of the flow follows the direction of the war.”

While drawing the map, Mery had consulted Lu Zhu three times.

The first time, he drew the north very large, the division filling a third of the map; Lu Zhu said: ”Large is no use. Eight-tenths of the north’s land cannot grow grain. The larger you draw it, the emptier it looks.” The second time, he drew the West Bank into the south division; Lu Zhu said: ”The West Bank is the waist. If the waist belongs to the south, the north is cut off.” The third time, he drew the river as one line running through all three divisions; Lu Zhu looked at it for a long while, and said: ”That is right. The grain travels by water; the river is the pulse of the three divisions. While the pulse lives, the divisions live.”

”So this map—” Mery pointed at the river, ”—is read by the river first, and the divisions second. The boats on the river are the blood of the pulse — and a pulse with no blood is a pulse that has stopped, whatever the map says.”

From the crowd of granary keepers, someone asked, low — the question of a man who had seen the river change hands in a single night — ”And what about the river stretches the rebels hold?”

”Go around.” Mery said. ”The river soldiers seal the main channel — take the side channels. They stake the side channels — land by night and carry by cart. Wherever there is a way, Merchant Meru’s river map has it. If the water road is cut, there is the land road; if the land road is cut, there is the night road. As long as the ledgers hold the grain, the feet will find the road.”

”How does it flow?” A keeper asked — a thin old man from the north division’s rolls, who had seen grain flow one way all his life, and was asking whether the river could be made to flow two.”

”It flows by three rules.” Mery said, and he counted them on his fingers as he spoke, the way a man counts the articles of a contract he means to keep. ”First: what people eat comes before what horses eat. Second: what the front line needs comes before what the rear needs. Third: what saves life comes before what eases the moment. Whoever breaks a rule — I take it from his account.”

He paused — the pause of a man who is about to say something he has thought about for a long time — and said: ”These three rules were not invented by me. They were dug out, well by well, and counted out, sack by sack, in these three months inside this city. I did not read them from a book; I read them from the well-ropes and the grain sacks and the faces of the people who waited in the queues. When grain enters the storehouse, the people come first. When the people stand, the horses may come. The front line guards the edge of the blade; the rear stores the breath behind it — between the blade and the breath, keep the blade first. Between the medicine that saves life and the grain that eases hunger, save the life first. These three rules look ordinary — but when the grain truly runs short, one rule is a thousand lives.”

The keepers of the courtyard all listened, held — the way a room is held when a speaker says something that changes the shape of the work. They had managed granaries all their lives; this was the first time they had heard that a granary could be managed like this — that it could be a weapon, a wall, a nation.

”The granaries of each division, I have counted too.” Mery went on — and the keepers in the courtyard leaned forward, because a man who has counted is a man who knows what he is talking about. The numbers came out of him without a pause, the way the numbers of a thing come out of a man who has lived with them for nights. ”South division: five official granaries inside the city, three rooms of the transfer depot, two campaign granaries at the south camp. North division: one governor’s granary at the northern border, three campaign granaries of the border garrison, and the new supply points along the relief army’s road — one every fifty li. Middle division: eleven official granaries at the new capital, seven village granaries on the West Bank, two granaries at the quarry — and the guild’s boats, counted as mobile granaries.” He counted them one by one, as a man counts his own soldiers. ”From now on, the accounts of all these granaries report once a day, station by station, converging. What converges on my table is the grain map of all Egypt.”

”Then...” Weser asked, low, ”how are the accounts checked?”

”Checked once a day.” Mery said, and the words had the even weight of a rule that would be followed — the weight of a man who has learned that an account unchecked for one day is an account that has begun to lie. ”Each division’s granaries: how much in, how much out, how much remains, written on one page, reported to the next station. The south division reports to me; the north division reports to the West Bank; the middle division reports to the new capital. The three lines of reports all converge on my table. If I have not cleared the accounts, the accounts do not sleep.”

The keepers of the courtyard listened, held again — and this time the holding was deeper, because the shape of the whole system had come clear to them at once. They had managed granaries all their lives; this was the first time they had heard that a granary could be managed like this.

”And one thing more.” Mery said, and his voice dropped a little, the way a voice drops when a man is about to say the hard part. ”From today, this city’s official granaries keep only three months of rations. Everything beyond that goes into the general account. The grain of the general account goes north. Have you calculated how much the army in the north eats in a day? Ten thousand men — ten thousand mouths in a day. Ten thousand mouths are ten thousand portions of grain. Only when the account reaches this size does it deserve to be called an account.”

The old keepers of the courtyard looked at one another. Someone said, low: ”This young man means to put every granary in the country into his little notebook.”

”It cannot all fit.” Mery heard him — heard the mutter run through the courtyard like a wind — and raised his head, and his voice carried to the back of the yard. ”So it must be filled every day, and calculated every day. Calculate to whichever day, and that day is solid — and a solid day is a day the city can stand on. The days stack; the stack is the war.”

The dispatch of grain began the same day — not with a ceremony, and not with a speech, but with the first waybill being written out at the granary table, the characters going down in Mery’s small even hand, and the first cart being loaded at the gate.

The south division was easy — Mery himself was in the city, and the south camp’s messenger came twice a day, the reports arriving on the regular boat with the regular rhythm of a heartbeat. The north division was hard — hundreds of li away, the news slow, the road dangerous, and every report that crossed it came with a delay that could not be shortened. The north division was hard — hundreds of li away, the news slow, the road dangerous. Mery’s method was to set up a relay: the West Bank’s village granaries became the north line’s ”waist”; all grain going north passed through the West Bank first, then moved north in batches of five days. Each batch was accompanied by a company of a hundred escorts and a waybill. The waybill stated: how many carts, how many sacks, what hour it left, what hour it should arrive. When it reached the north, the governor signed the receipt, and the receipt came back along the road.

The supply points along the road were fixed too: north of the West Bank, one every fifty li. Each point was small — a single earthen house, or half a disused way-station. What was stored there was the road-loss grain and the escorts’ own rations. Between two points, a horse runs two double-hours. When a grain convoy passed a point, the keeper drew a mark on the waybill — when the receipt came back, mark by mark matched, and it was clear at a glance whether the convoy had gone astray.

”This method,” Weser said, and the old keeper’s voice had in it the approval of a man who recognizes a good old trick when he sees it worn new, ”is a little like the road passes we used to guard the granary in the old days. We marked each cart that left and each cart that returned; the marks were the granary’s memory.”

”It is a road pass.” Mery said, and he said it without apology, the way a man states a rule he has thought through. ”Grain travels the way people travel — it needs a certificate. A man without a pass is a man who can be stopped at any gate; grain without a waybill is grain that can be taken at any bend of the road. While the certificate lives, the grain cannot be lost; break the certificate, and the grain is lost. The north line is more than four hundred li — it is held together by these marks, one by one.”

”With the round trip,” Mery said to Lu Zhu, and he said it the way a man states a cost he has already paid in his head, ”that is ten days. The north’s granaries must hold at least ten days of grain before this line can be opened.”

”So the north’s granaries,” Lu Zhu said, ”must be filled first.”

”Filled.” Mery said, and the word came out the way a decision comes out when it has been weighed three times. ”The new capital’s official granaries: the first batch sends twenty days of grain north. The West Bank’s village granaries: another ten days. Those two advances go in first, and the north line’s heart is steady.”

”And the middle division?”

”The middle division is the pool.” Mery said, and the image came out whole, the way an image comes out when a man has been turning it over for nights. ”The new capital’s grain, the West Bank’s grain, the guild’s boats — all are water pouring into the pool. The south and north lines are two pipes. When the pipes are tight, the pool must be full. So the middle division takes in more than it gives out, and accumulates. Accumulate until next spring, and this pool is the life of both lines.” ℯ

Lu Zhu listened, and looked at Mery for a long time — the look of a man seeing, in the young face across the table, the shape of what he himself had been building for years, handed on. This boy who had once counted grain sacks in a refugee camp — who had crouched in the dark with his notebook and his lantern, adding the numbers of a city’s hunger — was now speaking a system that could feed a nation. He spoke it the way a man speaks a thing he has lived.

”You have grown up.” Lu Zhu said.

”Teacher,” Mery said, and the words came out the way a decision comes out of a man who has been weighing it all night, ”when the account grows, the man must grow with it — and if the man does not grow, the account will outgrow him, and the account is not the kind of thing that waits.”

The letters between Meru and Mery became frequent after that — so frequent that the boatmen came to know the feel of the two men’s letters, and the way-stations along the river began to hold the packets as a matter of course.

Meru could not read or write; his letters were dictated to the village granary’s scribe, and then copied out. But the meaning of every letter was solid: when the south line’s boats arrived, how much cargo was unloaded, when the river soldiers changed their patrols, which side channel had gained new stakes. Mery’s replies were solid too: what the city needed, what to carry first, how the cargo would be divided when it arrived, on which page of the ledger it was recorded.

Letter by letter, two ledgers matched into one line — the line that ran from the city’s granary to the guild’s dock, from the guild’s dock to the river, and from the river to wherever the war needed the grain to be. The line was not drawn on paper; it was kept in the heads of two men who trusted each other’s numbers.

”Merchant Meru’s letters,” Mery said once to Lu Zhu, ”are like his pipe. Short, hard, and the moment they are lit, there is fire.”

”His accounts,” Lu Zhu said, ”are like his pipe too. Knocked against the stone edge — one sound at a time, never vague.”

The city’s rations tightened quietly by half a tenth with the two-line account — tightened the way a rope tightens when a load is added to it: not with a snap, but with a slow drawing of the slack that no one mentions and everyone feels.

Not an open cut — a finer reckoning. The clerks issuing grain smoothed the grain in the measure flatter than before. Before, a sheng of grain poured into a sack would mound into a little peak; now it was level — level as a mirror. Sharp-eyed women noticed, and muttered. The warden heard, and said: ”It is not a cut. The two lines have opened; the grain must be shared evenly. This half-tenth saved is saved for the soldiers of the north.”

”The soldiers of the north,” the woman said, and she said it without complaint, the way the city had learned to say the hard things, ”were born of fathers and mothers too. If our half-tenth keeps one of them standing on the wall, it is a half-tenth well spent. Saving half a tenth — that is right.”

”Right.” The warden said, and he said it with the finality of a promise. ”When the north is steady, this half-tenth comes back to everyone — and the coming back will be the sweetest grain this city has ever eaten.”

The woman nodded, and tied the mouth of her grain sack a little tighter.

Meru’s guild split into two companies two days later.

On the West Bank’s dock, Meru called all his people together — Old Camel, A-Ping, Shunzi, Old Wu, and the scores of newly hired boatmen, standing in a dark crowd on the planks, the river moving behind them. The dock had seen the guild’s cargoes come and go for fifteen years; it had never seen the guild divide itself into two armies.

”From today,” Meru said, ”the guild runs in two directions. One direction follows me — the south line, the city’s grain, the city’s medicine, not one run missed. The other direction follows Old Camel — north. What the army in the north eats, what the wall in the north uses — that is your road.”

”Merchant,” A-Ping stepped forward, ”I go north.”

”Your water-craft — the south line needs it.” Meru said.

”The river in the north — I should go and feel it once.” A-Ping said. ”Old Camel is up in years; the night watch on the water needs a young man’s eyes.”

Meru looked at him for a long moment — the look of a man who is letting a boy become a man in front of him, and knows the boy will not come back the same — and said: ”Then you follow Old Camel. Remember — the river in the north is colder than the south’s. The water at the bow: don’t touch it with your hand; use the pole.”

”Noted.”

Old Wu also signed for the north. He said the wound in his arm had healed — he flexed the arm twice to prove it, the scar pulling white — and it was just the place to try the north. The arm that had taken an arrow on the night of the bait boats would take the cold of the northern road. Shunzi said nothing; he only wiped his horse-lamp, again and again. In the end it was Meru who named him: ”Shunzi — you stay. Your father put you in my hands; I cannot send you north. And the south line’s nights cannot do without your lamp.”

Shunzi opened his mouth — the protest rising in him, the words ’I am not a child’ half-formed — and in the end said nothing. He hugged the lamp, the lamp that had saved six boats on the night the patrol changed its hour, and stepped back into the south line’s crowd.

That same night, the north company moved. Four boats, loaded with the first northbound cargo: lime, chopped straw, medicine, and the tools Seb had asked for — the cargo of a war that was being carried in both directions at once. The boats cast off in the dark, the oars wrapped, the lamps hooded, the discipline of the south line’s nights carried north by the same hands. Seb and the craftsmen were already waiting on the West Bank. The boats and the men met before dawn, and together went north.

The north company’s winter clothes were sewn the night before the departure — the women of the West Bank working through the dark by lamplight, the needles moving in the old rhythm of women who have sewn for men going to hard places before. The women of the West Bank patched old felt and coarse hemp together, and sewed a padded coat for every man going north. The stitching was coarse, but the padding of dry straw was thick. Old Camel tried his on and said: ”Heavy, but warm. In the north, worn to sleep at night, it will do for a blanket.”

A-Ping received a new pair of straw sandals, the soles three layers thicker than the south’s. He put them on and walked two circles on the dock: ”These — even stepping on ice chips, they won’t pierce.”

”When you reach the north,” the woman who had sewn the sandals said, ”don’t take them off. Frozen feet cannot walk — and a man who cannot walk cannot walk home.”

”Noted.” A-Ping said, and he meant it — the way a man means a thing he will need on the road ahead. He had been a fisherman’s son; he knew that the river in a new country is a new river, and that a man who touches it with his hand instead of his pole is a man who has not learned its temper yet.

Shunzi wiped his horse-lamp three times, and, when no one was watching, tucked it into one of the north company’s boats. Old Wu saw it, and said nothing. When the boats cast off, Shunzi ran to the water’s edge and called after them: ”Fifth Brother! I left the lamp on your boat! The north nights are long — you’ll need it!”

”Got it!” Old Wu’s voice floated back over the water, thin with the distance but clear. ”Wait for us to come back in the spring!” The spring was a long way off, and both of them knew it, and both of them said it the way men say a thing they intend to make true.

Shunzi stood at the water’s edge until the boat-shadows were gone, and only then turned to walk back. In his arms he still held another horse-lamp — the south line’s new lamp, given him by Meru. On its shade, a small boat-shape had been drawn in charcoal.

Meru stayed on the West Bank through those days — the days when the guild was two companies, and the river carried both their cargoes, and the dock saw the comings and goings of a trade that had become a war. He stayed because the south line needed his eye on it, and because the north line needed his blessing on it.

He re-counted the south line’s boats: eight large, four small. The large ran the city; the small scouted the way. The men were divided into three shifts: one loading and unloading, one sailing, one checking cargo at the village granaries. And he set a new rule: when every boat came back, the boatmen reported the state of the river first — how many river soldiers’ boats, what watch they patrolled, which side channels had risen or fallen. Report one item, record one item, all written into his river map.

”This map,” Meru said to the boatmen, ”is no longer mine alone. It is the life of three hundred li of the south line’s channel. Whatever any of you sees, add it to the map. One stroke added — one boat saved.”

The boatmen acknowledged. An old boatman added a stroke that very day: five li upstream of the city’s west, a new cluster of fishing shacks had gone up, and there were figures moving at night — not a good sign. Meru looked at it, and changed the route that night, going around the shacks.

”In our trade,” he said, knocking his pipe, ”the thing to fear is not a long road — it is a road that has changed. When the road changes, the cargo is lost in your hands. And now the cargo is lives — it cannot be lost.”

Inside the city, the transfer depot’s traffic now ran on three lines.

When grain came in, Mery’s ledger recorded it once, the official granary’s ledger once, the transfer depot’s ledger once. When the three matched, the grain was truly in the city. The issuing went the same way. The clerks joked that a sack of grain passing through the depot was checked more strictly than a man passing through the city gate.

”Strict is right.” Weser said. ”In this world, grain is more precious than men.”

”Grain is not precious.” Mery heard him, and corrected him. ”What is precious is the people behind the grain. The defenders, the wall-builders, the ones going north, the ones staying — whichever hands the grain reaches, that life is extended a span. So these sacks are not grain. They are lives.”

Weser was still for a moment, then smacked his lips, and said no more. He turned to his counting-rods, and laid them out more slowly and carefully than ever before. What he was laying out was the heaviest account in the city.

As Old Camel boarded the boat, he turned back and shouted to Meru: ”Merchant! Don’t let the south line’s accounts get muddled!”

”They won’t be muddled.” Meru shouted back. ”And you — walk the northern road finely. When you come back, I’ll stand you date wine — the West Bank’s, no water added!”

”Done!” Old Camel shouted. The boat cast off, and the oars faded. The lamps of the West Bank, one by one, turned the river’s face into broken gold.

The north company’s first letter came back after five days — five days in which the West Bank watched the northern road every morning, and Mery’s eyes went to the river gate every evening. The letter came back by the hand of a returning escort, worn and travel-stained.

The letter was dictated by Old Camel — he could not write; it was written out for him by the scribe at a way-station along the road. The letter said: the cargo had changed from boats to carts twice, and both men and goods were safe. On the official road north, the refugees grew more numerous by the day; the grain carts could only travel at night. One refugee child, too hungry to walk, sat at the roadside, and Old Camel gave him half a flatbread. The child ate the bread, and followed the convoy for half a li, until his family found him.

”When the child left,” Old Camel had the scribe write, ”he turned back and bowed to the grain carts. That was when I understood — what we carry on these carts is the lives of these people.”

Mery read the letter, and tucked it into the register of the ”three ledgers.” The page it was tucked into happened to be the north line’s account.

Inside the city, the lamp of the reckoning burned brighter than before — the lamp of the granary’s back courtyard, where the numbers of two lines of war met every night, and where the oil was spent like the patience of the city itself.

In the granary’s back courtyard, Mery’s ledgers were stacked three deep on his table — the south line’s, the north line’s, the rear’s, each stack with its own color of binding, each page with its own column of figures. Weser and three old granary keepers came before dawn and did not leave until past the Zi hour. They did not use the abacus — no, they laid out counting-rods. Reed stalk by reed stalk, they laid out the in, laid out the out, until the table was covered. One rod laid wrong, and they began again from the first.

Weser did not take to it at first. He had kept granaries for half a lifetime, and his accounts were kept in knots and notches. Now he was told to lay counting-rods, and his ten fingers were as clumsy as ten turnips. On the first day, he mis-added the south division’s account three times. When the third error came, the old man’s face went red to the ears; he shoved the rods away and said: ”I am old. This account, I cannot reckon.”

Mery said nothing. He walked over, picked up the scattered rods one by one, and laid them back in front of Weser.

”Uncle Weser,” he said, ”when you kept the granary, you trusted your eyes and your nose. Which stack had gone damp — one smell told you. That skill, no ledger can teach. But now there are too many granaries; the eyes and the nose cannot see them all. The counting-rod is the third eye added for you. Lay it out first; when you have laid it out until it is familiar, it will be as quick as your nose.”

Weser looked at the row of rods for a long time, and then sighed: ”At my age — taught to keep accounts by a young man.”

”It is not I teaching you.” Mery said. ”It is this war teaching us.”

From that day, Weser practiced laying counting-rods before dawn every day. By the third day, he could lay out the south division’s whole account at one go, without a single error. That night, the old man laughed out of turn, and said to the other three keepers: ”Do you see? This is what they mean by learning as long as one lives. We who keep granaries must also learn to reckon the whole country’s accounts.”

Of the other three keepers, one had already fallen asleep, one was still struggling with the rods, and only one raised his head to mutter: ”Teach me first, then boast.”

”In all my life,” Weser said, rubbing his red-rimmed eyes, ”this is the first time I have reckoned an account this large. Not one grain may be reckoned wrong.”

”One grain wrong,” Mery said, ”and the soldier in the north eats one grain less — and the grain the soldier does not eat is the grain that does not reach the wall, and the wall that does not rise is the wall that lets the Hittites through. The ledgers of this war are not paper. They are the difference between standing and falling.”

”And the people in the city?” Weser asked, and the question came out the way it always came out from the old keeper — not as a challenge, but as a worry that had to be spoken. ”Can they not eat less?”

”The people in the city — not one less either.” Mery said. ”The people of the city guard the root of the south line. If the root is starved, both lines collapse.”

Weser smacked his lips and said no more — the smack of a man who has been given an answer he cannot argue with. He laid out another row of reed stalks, very slowly — as if laying out a row of soldiers, each stalk a man, each man a mouth to feed, each mouth a life to keep.

The south line’s boats had not missed a single run either.

After the north company left, Meru re-arranged his crews: the remaining boats, six of them, were paired into three teams, sailing in turn. Every other day, one team set out. They still took the old road — the side channels, the reed beds, the hidden cuts. The rebels’ patrols had grown more frequent, but Meru’s boats had grown slicker with every run.

One night, the river soldiers’ patrol boat changed its hour, coming out a full watch early. Meru’s fleet was mid-river, with no time to hide. It was Shunzi who thought on his feet: he lit his horse-lamp, hung it at the stern, and stirred up the oars — making the boat look like a startled fishing boat. The river soldiers’ boat came alongside, held up its torch, cursed ”fishermen with no fear of death,” and moved on.

”That night,” Meru said later, to anyone who would listen, and he said it the way a man records a debt, ”Shunzi’s lamp saved six boats. The lamp was a thing he had wiped and polished and carried for years; that night it did the work of a warship.”

”A lamp is a dead thing,” Shunzi said. ”It is the swinging that makes it live.”

The city’s cargo came in as usual, the boats sliding in through the side channel with the old, practiced silence. The transfer depot’s ledgers were kept as usual, the three columns matching at the end of every day. The city had learned, in the months of the siege, that ’as usual’ was a thing to be treasured. Everything flowed like an unseen river, moving quietly through the night.

On the day Seb left, he sent a letter into the city by messenger.

The letter was to Lu Zhu, and it was short. It said he and the forty craftsmen had joined the relief army going north, and were on the road to the border. It said the wind in the north was harder than the south’s; before they had even arrived, the backs of his hands had cracked. It said when they reached the border, he would measure the wall first, then settle the method of repair, and send word when there was word. At the end of the letter was one sentence:

”Teacher — the wall of the south, I leave in your hands. The wall of the north, I will look at for you.” The sentence was short, the way Seb’s sentences always were when he meant them most — and Lu Zhu read it the way a man reads a sentence he will carry for a long time.

Lu Zhu read the letter twice, folded it, and put it in his breast.

”That boy,” he said to Kamon, ”has truly grown up.”

”He grew up long ago.” Kamon said. ”Three years on the western line, four months south of the city. He is the boy you brought out of the burned village — and he has not taken one crooked step.”

”Good that he has not.” Lu Zhu said. ”The frozen ground of the north is harder than the south of the city. Let us hope his drawings are harder than the frozen ground.”

On the morning Seb left, he stood at the West Bank’s ferry landing and looked south for a long time.

He knew that across a river, across the rebels’ camp, his teacher was in that city. He could not see Lu Zhu, and Lu Zhu could not see him. But he knew that the smoke over the city wall was meant for him to see, and the road under his feet was a road walked for the city too.

”Teacher,” he said, low, in the direction of the city, ”I am going. When I have raised the wall of the north, I will come back to see you.”

In the morning mist of the landing, he and the forty craftsmen joined the northbound column. He rode his horse with the roll of drawings, wrapped in three layers of oilcloth, at his breast. Hoofbeats, wheel-sounds, footsteps — all merged into one long column, going north, going north.

”That boy,” the West Bank’s granary keeper said to the man beside him, ”looked back three times for every step he took.”

Mery’s memorial went back with the courier.

The memorial was not long — a few pages of sheepskin, the writing small and even, the numbers laid out in the columns of a man who has learned to make arithmetic speak plainly. The first page set out the three divisions; the second, the three rules; the third, the account of forty days for each of the two lines. The last page carried one line:

”Before the grain runs out, a decision must be made.”

The courier sealed the memorial and tucked it against his skin. Before he left, he said to Mery: ”Master Mery, this memorial of yours — I will deliver it if it costs me my life.”

”No need for that.” Mery said. ”The account is a dead thing; the man is a living one. Travel slowly, arrive steadily. When you arrive, read the third page to the pharaoh — forty days is forty days; not one more, not one less, no hedging.”

The courier nodded solemnly, and boarded the boat.

Half a month later — half a month of relays and river crossings and the slow patient travel of a document that carried a war’s arithmetic — the memorial lay on the desk of the palace.

The pharaoh read the three pages of sheepskin through — the divisions, the rules, the forty days — and pressed his fingertip gently on the line ”Before the grain runs out, a decision must be made.” The fingertip rested there a long moment, as if the decision were already pressing back.

”Forty days,” he said, and the number fell into the hall the way a stone falls into still water. ”This war can only be fought for forty days more.”

”Within forty days,” the chief of the war office said, ”if the south is not pacified, and the north is not settled...”

”Then the method must change.” The pharaoh said, and the hall heard in his voice the thing they had been waiting for — the sound of a decision being made. ”The siege — a decisive battle; the border wall — a fast repair.” ”The siege — a decisive battle; the border wall — a fast repair. Both lines must be pulled in toward their shortest form.” He stood up and walked to the door of the hall, looking south. South — across hundreds of li of dust and mist, the city that had been besieged for more than three months. ”Pass the edict to Horenheb: the two lines, north and south, must be decided within a fixed time. Thebes cannot be delayed any longer.”

The wind came in through the hall door and set the sheepskin pages rattling. The page of the ”decision” memorial was lifted by the wind, turned over, and fell back on the desk.

Inside the city, the lamps of three places gradually joined into one point — the way three threads join into one rope when they are twisted together long enough. The granary, the depot, the hospital: the city’s three pulses, beating in the same night.

The granary’s lamp lit Mery’s ledgers; the transfer depot’s lamp lit the goods in and out; the hospital’s lamp lit the register of the wounded. Three lamps, half a city apart, each burning alone. In the deep night, the wind came down off the wall-head and set the three lamps’ shadows swaying — like three hands greeting each other across the dark, three hands of the same body, keeping the same watch.

”This city,” the chief officiant said during his rounds, ”no longer sleeps at night.”

”Not sleeping is good.” Lu Zhu said, and he said it the way a man says a thing he has learned the hard way. ”With the eyes open, everything is visible — the lamps, the shadows, the shapes that move between them. A city that sleeps through its own siege is a city that has already lost the night.”

The north line’s second letter came five days later.

Again it was Old Camel’s dictation, written out by a way-station scribe. The letter said: the grain convoy had passed the last supply point; two more days to the border wall. The refugees along the road were fewer than before — not because there were fewer people, but because they had all gathered in the big villages by the roadside, waiting for the grain convoy to pass and beg a bowl of hot soup. Old Camel had the cook set up a great cauldron at every halt, and boil a pot of thin porridge — thin, but hot.

”Once,” Old Camel had the scribe write, ”a child held up his bowl and asked if we were the royal army. I said no, we were grain carriers. The child said the grain carriers are better than the royal army. The royal army passes without looking back; the grain carriers pass and give something hot.”

Mery read the letter, folded it, and tucked it into the north line’s account page.

”The sky of the north,” he said, low, looking at the letter as if he could see through it to the road beyond the border, ”will soon be snowing.”

”When it snows,” Weser said beside him, ”the road grows harder.”

”So,” Mery said, ”the fifth batch of grain must carry two-tenths more than the first four. When the snow seals the road, those two-tenths are the north line’s winter life.”

He took up his brush and changed a figure in the register. When the change was made, he brightened the lamp a little, and went on reckoning the next item.

That night, Mery reckoned until the cocks crowed.

The counting-rods on the table were laid out and gathered, gathered and laid out. The lamp oil was refilled three times. When the sky was turning gray, he straightened his back and wrote the last few figures into the register, carefully and evenly. When the writing was done, he blew out the lamp and walked into the courtyard.

The sky in the courtyard was gray-blue, showing a hint of the white that would come. He stood at the well-head, cupped a handful of well water, and washed his face. The water was cold — cold enough to wake a man’s spirit.

”A new day,” he said, low. ”New figures.”

In the distance, in the direction of the transfer depot, the first shift of clerks had already opened the gate. A creak — in the clear morning air of the city, unusually distinct, like a bowstring being drawn.

The new capital had moved as well.

The moment the court’s order arrived, the old granary keepers of the new capital counted through all eleven official granaries in a single night. When the count was done, the chief keeper carried the account book into the hall and said: ”The new capital’s grain, by the edict, sends twenty days north. Loading tomorrow; departure the day after.” The pharaoh approved. The old keepers came out and stood at the granary gate, watching the sacks being carried onto the carts, one by one.

”Cart after cart,” one old keeper said, ”is going north.”

”When the army in the north eats this grain,” another said, ”the border wall gains one more brick.”

”One more brick,” a third took it up, ”and the city in the south breathes one more breath.”

Three old men, standing in the autumn wind, watched the grain carts leave the granary yard one after another. The wheel-ruts ran north, to the horizon.

The people of the city had learned of the two lines too.

On the peace boards, a line had been added: ”The official granary has taken the office of two-line dispatch. The south line and the north line both have grain accounts. The city’s rations are not reduced.” Those who could not read asked those who could. At the words ”not reduced,” a long breath went out of the lanes.

”Not reduced.” An old woman said. ”Not reduced — then we can go on.”

”Not just not reduced.” The warden said. ”Master Mery said: when this winter is survived, and the spring comes, and the two lines ease, the city will have room to breathe.”

”That would be good.” The old woman said. ”These old bones of mine will hold out for the spring.”

There were those who threw cold water: ”Spring? No one knows how the war in the north will look by then. The Hittites did not come to visit.”

”Always your tongue.” The man beside him said. ”Isn’t what the peace board says more reliable than your mouth?”

The man curled his lip and said nothing. But that night, he checked his own grain jar again.

The people of the city, each in their own way, helped the two lines.

The women south of the city went through their dried dates again, picking out the bad ones and saving the good — they said the people of the north needed something sweet on the road. The old craftsmen east of the city brought their stored timber to the material yard, saying it could serve as scaffolding for the northern wall. And the children wrapped the eggs they had saved all autumn in straw and brought them to the hospital — Sister Wei did not take the eggs; she took the children’s goodwill, and passed the eggs on to the wounded of the hospital.

”The heart of this city,” Sister Wei said to Shafi, ”has split into two halves now. Half on the wall in the south, half on the road in the north.”

”When a heart splits in two,” Shafi said, ”it is still a warm heart. That is enough.”

But Mery knew that the days on the ledgers were tightening.

In the first ten days of the two lines, everything went by his register. On the eleventh day, when he went over the general account, his hand stopped. Under the lamp, he stared at the row of counting-rods for a long time, and then laid the north line’s figures out again.

”Forty days,” he said, low. ”South line forty days, north line forty days. Add the losses on the road—” he moved several rods, slowly, to another column, ”—thirty-seven days.”

Thirty-seven days. The number settled on his chest like a stone.

”Teacher,” Mery said to Lu Zhu the next day, ”the grain of the two lines will run to the bottom after the winter solstice. Before it runs to the bottom — if the siege of the south is not yet broken, and the relief of the north has not yet arrived—” He did not finish.

”At that time,” Lu Zhu said, ”there is only one way.”

”What way?”

”A decisive battle.” Lu Zhu said. ”The siege of the south cannot be dragged to the spring. The war in the north cannot be dragged to the thaw. Both lines must produce their result before the grain runs out.” He paused. ”That — beyond the two-line dispatch — is the true account.”

Mery said nothing. He wrote the four characters ”thirty-seven days” on the last page of the register. He wrote them very small — as small as a seed buried in the earth.

The north’s first batch of grain reached the West Bank relay five days later — the carts rolling in with the dust of the road on them, the escort company’s captain riding at the head, the waybills in his saddlebag.

The waybill bore three stamps: the West Bank issue stamp, the escort company’s stamp, and the northern governor’s signature — the last one not yet arrived. Old Camel led the men in checking the cargo, reloading the carts, and sealing them afresh. They worked until dark, and twenty grain carts stood ready to go.

”North at first light.” Old Camel said, and the words were the old caravan hand’s words, the words of a man who has measured a road in his sleep — and who knows that the road measured in sleep is the road that comes true in the morning. ”The carts are loaded, the waybills are stamped, the escort is mounted. The only thing left is the walking.” ”This road, more than four hundred li. The official road — ten days. Traveling by night — eight. Push hard, and before the winter solstice, the northern granaries will be padded with twenty days.”

”On the road...” A-Ping asked.

”The road has a royal escort — fifty riders, enough.” Old Camel said. ”What is most disorderly in the north now is the refugees, not the Hittites. Refugees at the end of their hunger will seize anything. So the grain carts cannot stop; at every camp, the carts form a ring — the ring of carts is a wall.”

A-Ping nodded, and wrote the rules on his small wooden board.

On the first night of the camp, A-Ping saw what a ”cart ring” meant.

The twenty carts stood nose to tail in a ring — the way a herd of cattle forms a ring against wolves, the strong sides outward, the young in the middle. The men slept inside the ring; the animals were tethered at its center. Around the ring, on the open ground, a circle of broken pottery shards was scattered — whoever stepped on them, the crunch would wake the whole ring in the night. Old Camel had also posted two sentries, one on a cart-top, one at the ring’s mouth.

”This ring,” Old Camel said, patting a cart-side, ”is the same principle as the western line’s wall. The carts are the wall; the men are the sentries. When the refugees come, they step on the shards first, and we wake first. Awake, we light the torches — and they draw back by themselves.”

”Uncle Old Camel,” A-Ping asked, ”in all your years on the West Bank, have you seen refugees seize grain?”

”I have.” Old Camel said. ”A man at the end of his hunger is like a wolf. But you cannot blame them all — who is it that seizes, except the man whose hunger has come to the end of him?” He paused. ”So our grain carts do not stop by day, and their fires do not go out by night. The faster we travel, the less of the road’s disorder we meet.”

That night, A-Ping did not sleep sound inside the ring. He lay under a cart, listening to the wind beyond the ring. In the wind, now and then, the howl of a wild dog — near and far, like a hundred empty mouths in this troubled age.

Mery’s receipt came to the West Bank the next day, carried by the returning escort, the paper folded small and sealed with the granary’s wax. The receipt was one sentence:

”The north line is open. Take care on the road. The south line is mine.”

Old Camel read it, folded it, and put it in his breast, over his heart, next to the waybills. Before the sky was light — the dark still thick over the road — the twenty grain carts were on the official road, the escort riders taking their places at the head and the tail. The wheels creaked, going north.

The city’s accounts passed, day by day — the days of the siege adding themselves up the way the grain added itself up, each day a column, each column a little shorter than the one before.

Mery checked the ledgers at the Zi hour every day. The reports of the three lines — by water, by land — passed under his eyes, page by page. When he came to the north line’s reports, he always looked twice — the figures on that page, separated from him by hundreds of li of his hands, nevertheless held his whole night’s sleep.

One day — one of the nights when the ledgers were three deep and the lamp was burning low — Lu Zhu came to see him in the night, walking the dark lanes of the city the way he had walked them on the first night of the siege. Mery had fallen asleep over the table, half a counting-rod still in his hand. The lamp’s oil was nearly dry. Lu Zhu did not wake him; he only filled the lamp, and laid his own old coat gently over Mery’s shoulders.

The lamp burned again. It lit the ledgers covering the table, and lit Mery’s young face.

Lu Zhu sat by the table for a while, the old coat settling over the sleeping shoulders. He did not look at the ledgers — the ledgers were Mery’s battlefield, and a man does not read another man’s battlefield over his shoulder. He looked at the face of the sleeper instead, and the look was the look of a teacher who has seen his student take the field. He looked at the sleeping man: the brows still knitted, the lips moving slightly, as if, in his dreams, he were still reciting the figures.

”That boy,” Lu Zhu said, low, ”has reckoned a whole nation into his sleep.”

He stood up and walked to the window. Beyond the city, the night was dense and black. The torches on the wall-head were points of light, like gold dust scattered on black cloth. He thought suddenly: in this city, how many people are sleeping now, and how many are awake? The sleeping have given their lives to the awake; the awake carry those lives on their shoulders.

In the night beyond the window, the changing of the watch sounded from the wall-head — one beat, two, very soft, as if counting the watches for the whole city.

And by the table, the register of the ”three ledgers” had already been turned through a thick stack of pages — the pages of the south division, the north division, the rear, the pages that had traveled by boat and by cart and by the hands of a hundred men. On the last page, Mery had written four characters:

”Not one grain wrong.” Four characters, written in the small even hand of a man who has learned that the small figures are the ones that hold the large ones up.
