Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 75: Chapter 11: Undercurrents — The Eve of the Great Ceremony

On the night before the ceremony, the new capital’s lamps burned deep into the second half of the night.

The whole city was waiting for dawn. The ferrymen on the river flats had tied up their boats early, agreeing among themselves to rise at the hour of the tiger and fight for the first positions; the market stall-keepers had packed the flatbread, dates, and water they meant to sell tomorrow, item by item, into their baskets; the children had been pressed onto their sleeping mats by their elders, but their eyes stayed open, counting the lamps outside through the cracks of the window. The whole city could not settle — like a pot set over a fire, the lid pressed down as hard as possible, the steam still hissing out around the edges.

The ferrymen’s agreement had been made in the particular tone men use when they do not quite believe their own arrangements: they had said the hour of the tiger, and each of them privately meant to be awake an hour earlier, because the first boat across on the morning of the ceremony was the boat everyone would remember. The stall-keepers had done their packing twice, the way men pack when the goods must not be short. And the children, lying in the dark with their eyes open, were counting lamps not because the count mattered, but because counting was the only thing that made the waiting bearable. The city beneath them lay like a kettle at full boil, lid rattling, steam hissing out around the edges — ready, and not yet ready, all at once.

In the craftsmen’s village, the old masters gathered at the material yard. No one mentioned tomorrow’s work; they spoke only of tomorrow’s weather. Someone said there would be clouds; someone said the wind would be strong; the talk went around until Old Master Qu pressed it flat with one sentence: ”Stop guessing, all of you. The Master Builder has calculated the day. The sun would not dare not to come.” The men laughed, and laughing, they all turned to look in the direction of the temple to the west.

The joke was an old one by now, worn smooth by repetition — but it carried a weight that the laughing men did not fully measure. They had watched the Master Builder calculate a season’s shadows and land them, on the equinox, to the inch; they had watched the sun keep his appointment on the solstice; and in a city where the old gods had been served by faith alone, these men had come to serve the sun with arithmetic. When Old Qu said the sun would not dare not to come, he was not joking about the weather. He was stating the creed of the new temple, in the only way a stonemason would say it.

At the river-flat ferry crossing, the boats that had arrived by day had finished unloading. The out-of-town passengers lodged in the city where they could; those who could not find rooms squeezed into the shelters pitched at the market’s edge. Meru’s men registered them one by one — how many people to a shelter, all written down. In one shelter lived a woman holding a child; the child had cried twice in the night, and none of the others in the shelter minded; they all helped soothe it. Tomorrow, they were all bound for the same place.

The strangers had come from villages whose names the city had never heard, drawn by a rumor that had traveled faster than any rumor the old temples had ever spread: a temple with no roof, where everyone could hear the god’s words. The woman with the child had walked three days; the child had cried twice in the night, and the strangers in the shelter had taken turns soothing it, because on a night like this, in a shelter full of people bound for the same place, a crying child was everybody’s business.

Only the rear courtyard of the official warehouse was a different scene.

At dusk, the royal chief officiant arrived. He came with two attendants, from the direction of Thebes — a man of about forty, in a brand-new white linen sacrificial robe, grave of manner, sparing of words. Lu Zhu walked a circuit of the square with him, running through the ceremony’s order one last time: at the end of the Si hour and the beginning of the Wu hour, the three chief officiants mount the altar; the prayers first, then the address, then the declaration of the ceremony’s opening.

The officiant walked the circuit the way a man walks a room he means to know by heart — slowly, his eyes moving ahead of his feet, noting the altar’s height, the columns’ distances, the lie of the ground. He was a man of the old school, trained in the old temple’s formalities; the robe he wore was new, but the manner was the manner of decades. And yet, as he walked, something in his bearing loosened, almost without his noticing: the square had no dark inner hall, no echoes to be frightened of, no hush to be maintained. It was a place that asked him to be heard, not feared.

”Master Builder,” the officiant said, halting before the altar, ”tomorrow, when I mount the altar — where do I stand?”

”Center-west of the altar.” Lu Zhu said. ”At the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, the sun stands east-by-south. Standing west of center, no direct light falls on your face — and the people below see you clearest.”

The officiant listened, said nothing, and only nodded. After a moment he said: ”I have presided over many ceremonies. Never once was even my standing position measured in advance.”

The sentence was not a complaint; it was a discovery, spoken with the particular wonder of a man who has spent a lifetime inside tradition and has just been shown, for the first time, that the tradition was a choice. In the old temples, the officiant’s position had been fixed by custom — here, before the pillar, a step one way; there, at the incense stand, a step the other — and no one had ever told him why, because the why had been forgotten centuries ago. This square told him why before he asked: the light, the shadow, the faces of the crowd. His place was measured because everything in this temple was measured.

”Measured in advance — that is what makes it foolproof.” Lu Zhu said.

The officiant nodded again, turned, and left. At the edge of the square he suddenly looked back and said: ”Tomorrow, the temple is the god’s temple — and the people’s temple. The intent with which the Master Builder built this temple, I will carry up onto the altar, and speak it for the whole city.”

The words were more than courtesy; they were the man’s own quiet surrender. He had come from Thebes prepared to officiate at a heretic’s temple, and he was leaving having understood, standing in the measured position on the measured stone, that the temple was not the heresy — it was the answer. Lu Zhu did not answer; he only raised his hands in a bow.

Lu Zhu did not sleep.

After dark, he took Kamon and four trusted craftsmen, and walked the whole temple from end to end. This was not the first time — over the past ten days he had patrolled it no fewer than twenty times. But this night was different. During the day he had remembered, for no reason he could place, Imset’s words: the old temple’s priests were best at choosing their moment. The thickest crowd was the moment they moved.

The twenty-odd patrols had taught him the square the way a man learns a room in the dark — by the feel of the ground underfoot, the spacing of the columns, the places where the lamps left shadows. Tonight, walking it again, he found himself listening as much as looking: listening for the square’s voice, the one he had built, and for any note in it that did not belong. The wind moved through the columns; the lamps hissed; the river’s sound came faintly from beyond the walls. All of it was the square he knew. And still, at the eastern column, he stopped — because the square’s voice had told him, in its way, that something in it had changed.

The patrol reached the square’s east side, and he stopped before a column.

It was the column he had repositioned after the shim affair in the storehouse, years ago. He walked a circuit around it, exactly as he had ten days before. The column stood straight; the calibration marks on its base showed clear in the lamplight.

He crouched, and put his hand into the gap between the column base and the column itself.

He touched something.

His fingertip stopped deep in the gap, touching a hard thing. Wood. Polished smooth, a thin sliver, shoved along the seam, driven in so deep his finger could not reach the end of it. He raised his head and looked at Kamon. Kamon was holding up the wind lantern; under the light, his face was sinking, point by point.

The touch told Lu Zhu everything the lantern could not: the wood had been worked, not broken — its edges filed, its face worn to a smoothness that only hours of patient rubbing could produce. It was not the work of a man improvising in the dark. It was the work of a craftsman, or of someone who had paid a craftsman well. And it had been driven in with the same care: seated at the load-bearing point, deep enough to be invisible, precise enough to do its work over time. The column had looked straight at dusk. It would still look straight at noon tomorrow — and the shadow would be off by three feet.

”There is something in it.” Lu Zhu said.

”Take it out?” Kamon asked.

”Not yet.” Lu Zhu stood, drew the charcoal from his belt, and made a small mark on the column base. Then he said: ”Find me a plumb line.”

While the plumb line was being fetched, Lu Zhu walked another circuit around the column. He remembered, two years ago, that thin wooden shim in the column storehouse — set between the stone column and its timber bed, set lightly, set firmly, so that the column looked sound when it came in, and once standing, leaned a little more every day. That time, the shim had been found in the storehouse. This time, the thing had already reached the column base. The method was the same method — only harsher.

”They have learned.” He said, low. ”They do not go into the storehouse anymore. They go straight onto the column.”

The plumb line was at hand. Two craftsmen let the cord down from the column’s top; Lu Zhu knelt half beside the base, squinting. The plumb bob’s tip fell outside the calibration mark — off. Off by not much. Half a fen. But that half fen, on this column, was another set of accounts entirely.

”This column,” Lu Zhu said, ”is the third of the outer ring’s east side.”

”I know.” Kamon said.

”At the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, the sun stands east-by-south.” Lu Zhu crouched on the paving and drew with the charcoal. ”At that hour, the eastern columns’ shadows sweep west, falling outside the altar. Where they fall, I calculated: one and a half feet from the altar’s edge.” He drew a line to represent the column shadow. ”Now the column is off by half a fen, and the shadow shifts with it. Half a fen looks small — projected thirty paces out, it is three feet. Three feet — exactly enough to press onto the altar’s southeast corner.”

He finished the line, and without stopping, drew a small circle beside it: ”This number is not an estimate. I measured the shadows for forty-nine days, three hours a day. Which column’s shadow, at which hour, reaches which position — all of it is in the ledger. Their half fen is not a random lean — they know what day tomorrow is. They know at which hour the ceremony is held. And they know where this column’s shadow was supposed to fall.”

The lantern’s flame wavered. Kamon’s voice came very low: ”When does it press on?”

”At the end of Si and the beginning of Wu.” Lu Zhu said. ”The ceremony’s true hour. When every eye in the field is on the altar — the shadow crawls up, inch by inch, biting a black notch into the southeast corner.”

”And then?” Kamon asked.

”And then,” Lu Zhu tapped the stone with the charcoal, ”someone in the crowd will shout: divine punishment. The shadow has swallowed the altar. The heretics’ temple has offended the god.”

He finished, and looked up at the sky. There were stars. Tomorrow would be a clear day.

”This move,” he said, ”was taught by the same master as the shim, all those years ago.”

Kamon said nothing. He crouched — his knee making a small sound — and held the lantern close to the column base, looking at the thing in the gap. He looked for a long time, then asked: ”How many places?”

”I don’t know.” Lu Zhu said. ”Check.”

Deep into the night, on the square, six men and four lamps went through the forty-eight columns, one by one.

The method was the same as years before: first look at the gap, then check the line. The gap between base and column, every one probed with a thin wooden sliver; the plumb line let down, checked against the marks. When they reached the thirty-first column — a tall column on the north side of the outer ring — it too was off. Off in the other direction, off by less; without the plumb line against the mark, the eye could not see it at all. When they reached the forty-seventh, a wedge was found at the southwest corner as well. Three columns. Three wedges. Positions all different, method all the same — polished hard-wood slivers, all set into the load-bearing gaps, all driven in too deep to see the end.

The work went slowly, and the men worked in silence. No one needed to say what the three wedges meant: the enemy had not struck once and left — they had laid three strokes, timed to three hours, like a man setting three traps along one path. The craftsmen who probed the gaps had built this square; each probe was an act of betrayal answered, and the silence of the night was the only language the work allowed.

”Three.” Kamon said. ”One east, one north, one southwest. Three hours, three shadows. They mean the shadows to chase the sun — one ’miracle’ after another.”

Lu Zhu crouched in the middle of the square and joined the three columns’ positions with the charcoal. When the lines were drawn, he understood it himself.

”The eastern one runs the end of Si and the beginning of Wu.” He said. ”The shadow pressing the altar — that is the main show. The tall northern column runs high noon — its shadow was meant to fall dead on the calibration line north of the altar. They have leaned it half a fen; at noon, the shadow will drift off the line. Then Old Calendar-Keeper, standing in the crowd, will see the shadow wrong — and hearts will stir: even the sun’s rule has gone wrong. As for the southwest one...” He paused. ”In the afternoon, the ceremony is over, but the crowd does not leave. As the people walk out, they look back — and the southwest column’s shadow lies slanted across the side colonnade, like a black arrow. That is their closing act.”

The three strokes, read in order, formed a play with a beginning, a middle, and an end: the punishment at the altar’s corner, the broken rule of the sun, the dark arrow across the leaving crowd. The old priests had written the script with a craftsman’s care for timing — each shadow arriving at the hour when the most eyes would be on it, each one telling the same story: the new temple is cursed, the god has turned against it, the old ways were right.

”One show,” Kamon said, ”and they mean to act three scenes.”

”Three scenes, three columns.” Lu Zhu tucked the charcoal back into his belt. ”They calculate harder than we do.”

He stood, walked to the middle of the square, and looked around. Where the lamps did not reach, the dark lay heavy.

”Look at the rest.” He said.

That look found more.

In the dark corner of the north side colonnade were hidden two bronze mirrors. The mirror faces were polished bright, wrapped in oilcloth, wedged into the recess where wall and column met, a half brick laid over them. When the lamp was held up, the mirror faces threw back a sheet of cold light. On the back side of the leaning eastern column lay half a length of bronze tube, a finger’s thickness, its mouth filed sharp, tucked into the shadow of the column base.

Lu Zhu picked up one of the mirrors and held it to the lamp, looking at his own face. The face in the mirror was split in two by the lamp flame.

The split face was the whole trick in miniature: one face, two images — depending on where the light stood and where the mirror leaned. The old priests’ art had always been the art of angles: a mirror angled at the sun, a voice angled at a wall, a shadow angled at an altar. None of it was magic; all of it was geometry. And the men who had hidden these mirrors were not magicians either — they were surveyors of the dark, and Lu Zhu, standing with the mirror in his hand, was their surveyor of the light.

”The mirrors are hidden facing the altar.” He said. ”At the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, the sun stands east-by-south. Tilt the face, the sunlight strikes the mirror, folds out — and sweeps exactly across the crowd. The whole field is watching the altar; suddenly a beam of light shoots out of a dark corner, flickers, and goes out. At that moment, let someone shout ’the god appears’ — faster than a wedge. Faster than a voice.”

”Light is faster than sound.” Kamon said. ”And hearts fear light.”

”What they fear is not knowing where the light comes from.” Lu Zhu set the mirror back in its place, and covered it with the half brick again, exactly as it had been. ”And we know.”

He set the brick down with the same care with which the hider had set it: precisely, leaving no trace of disturbance. The mirror would stay where it was, wrapped in its oilcloth, waiting for a hand that would find, instead of a mirror, the grip of Kamon’s men. The trap was simple: leave the bait in place, and let the thief’s own timetable deliver him.

Kamon picked up the bronze tube and turned it in the lamplight. He knew this thing — no, he knew the method of this thing. When Ma Laosi, the old stonemason of the West Bank, had been exposed years ago, he had given up one sentence: the man in white never left a long thread. But this time, the threads lay all over the ground.

”Mirrors. A tube.” Kamon said. ”On the day of the ceremony, they mean to flash a light with one hand and carry a voice with the other.”

”And the voice.” Lu Zhu said.

”What voice?”

Lu Zhu walked to the rough-surfaced wall and pressed his palm flat against it. The wall was cool, and grainy. He remembered the man behind the colonnade at the square’s west end, after the autumn equinox — the one who had tapped the wall with a hammer handle, listening for echoes, half the night. The man had found nothing and run. But the act of ”trying” was itself the answer: they knew this square carried voices, and they meant to install, in a square that carried voices, a voice that should not be there.

The memory of the hammer handle had settled in Lu Zhu’s mind the way a grain of sand settles in a shoe — small, persistent, always at the edge of notice. He had wondered, in the weeks since, what the man had been listening for. Now he knew: the man had been measuring the square’s voice the way a thief measures a lock — not to break it, but to pick it. He had tapped and listened, tapped and listened, hunting for the place where a whisper could be made to sound like a god’s. The search had been cut short by the patrol. But the search itself had told them what they needed: the voice was there, waiting to be borrowed.

”This square — whoever speaks, his voice carries far.” Lu Zhu said. ”The man on the altar speaks, and the whole field hears. But the reverse is also true: the man hidden behind a column speaks, and the whole field hears him too.”

”You mean — they want to borrow our sound...”

”To shout their orders.” Lu Zhu tucked the charcoal back into his belt. ”The two characters ’divine punishment’ — no one has to shove through the crowd to the altar to shout them. Crouch behind any column, shout once, and the whole square hears. Then the false becomes the true.”

He paused, and pointed at the half length of bronze tube in Kamon’s hand: ”With this thing, they do not even need to shout. Put the mouth to the tube’s end, speak in a pressed voice; the sound runs out of the tube, strikes the column — and the listener feels the voice is growing out of the column itself, not out of a man’s mouth. A voice that comes out of a column — is that still a human voice? That becomes an oracle.”

He walked to the rough-surfaced wall and pressed his palm against it again. The wall was cool, and grainy, like a giant whetstone. When the sound had been tested, he had had the rough surfacing on the east stretch redone, and a half-foot strip of rough stone laid in the gap between two columns. Those changes were all recorded in the sound ledger — one ledger for light, one for sound; which slab might be moved and which might not, the ledgers said plainly.

”Their voice has to come out from behind a column.” Lu Zhu said. ”The ground behind the columns is ours. The ground behind the walls is ours. This square looks vast — but the places that can hide a voice are, in fact, only a few.”

”Which places?”

”The backs of the forty-eight columns. The foot of the west low wall. The doorways of the two storehouses.” Lu Zhu said. ”Anywhere else, the voice comes out scattered — it cannot frighten people. These places — the voice comes out and the whole field hears it. They will choose these places.”

Kamon’s face was very dark. He walked a circuit of the square, looking at every corner where a man could hide, one by one. When he came back, he said: ”Then I’ll have the spaces behind the columns cleared.”

”No.” Lu Zhu said.

Kamon looked at him.

”Clear the columns’ backs, and there are still the wall’s back, and the crowd itself.” Lu Zhu said. ”The hiders will always hide better than we think. Better to leave them — let them come in by their own plan. Our people stand behind their plan.”

The wind came up off the river and shook the patrol lamps on the square. When Lu Zhu drew the three wedges out of the column gaps, he used two thin wooden picks, easing them out bit by bit, and set them under the lamp. The three wedges lay side by side, polished to the same smoothness — like three small knives.

The work of drawing them out had taken patience — each wedge seated so deep that the picks had to work at it from both sides, a hair’s width at a time, until the wood gave and slid free. Lu Zhu did not hurry; a wedge drawn out carelessly would scar the gap, and a scarred gap would be a witness tomorrow. When the third wedge came free, he set it beside the other two and looked at them for a long moment. Three slivers of wood, identical in polish, identical in size — the work of one craftsman’s hand, distributed to three columns, on three nights, by three pairs of hands that had never met.

”When were they driven in?” Kamon asked.

”Within the last ten days.” Lu Zhu said. ”Ten days ago, I patrolled this column; the gap was clean. They aimed at exactly these ten days — the ceremony’s date fixed, we busy with the ceremony, and no one checks the columns daily anymore.”

Kamon crouched, and turned the lantern on the three wedges on the ground. The wedges lay side by side, polished to the same smoothness, like three small knives.

”The man who drove the wedges is in the city.” Kamon said. His eyes swept the edges of the square, as if looking for something.

”He is.” Lu Zhu said. ”And he is waiting for tomorrow.”

Restoring the columns was delicate work. The wedges drawn out, the columns had loosened; they had to be tapped back with a wooden mallet, back to their exact positions, then checked with the plumb line until the bob’s tip fell in the dead center of the mark, not a hair off. Three columns, six craftsmen, working from the second half of the night until the first rooster. When the work was done, Kamon personally smoothed over every trace of the disturbance, making it match the ground around it.

The work had the quality of surgery: each tap of the mallet measured, each check of the line repeated, until the column stood where it had stood before the enemy touched it — and the ground around it remembered nothing. A craftsman’s fingers can feel what a ruler cannot measure; the six men worked by both, the ruler for the line and the fingers for the set of the stone, until the column felt, under the hand, the way it had felt ten days ago.

”They will come to check.” Kamon said. ”And when they check, they will know the columns are still the ones they tampered with.”

”They cannot tell.” Lu Zhu said. ”The wedges are out, the lines are restored, fresh mortar fills the gaps. All they can see is their own marks. And their marks cannot deceive them — nor us.”

Before dawn, the three columns stood in their places, exactly as they had yesterday, exactly as they had ten days ago. The sun had not risen, but Lu Zhu knew that at the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, the shadows would fall, not a hair off, outside the altar. The rule he had set for this temple still held.

”One more thing.” Lu Zhu said to Kamon. ”When they come to check the columns — don’t stop them. Let them check. When he finds the wedges gone, he will panic; panic, and he will go to his accomplices to report. Following him is worth more than catching him.”

”You mean — give him long line.”

”Give him one night.” Lu Zhu said. ”On tomorrow’s ceremony, whether the line is drawn tight — that is up to them.”

Kamon nodded. He looked up at the sky; the eastern edge had gone gray.

It was at this moment that Old Master Qu arrived.

He had not slept either. The old man had spent the better part of a year on this temple; after the finish, he came every day, looking at the sky, the columns, the calibration lines on the ground. This night, something weighed on his heart — he could not say what, he simply could not lie still, so he took a small lamp and went out to patrol. He came to the square’s east side and ran straight into Kamon’s men checking the lines. The old man stood a few paces off, watching for a while, and suddenly said:

”This column — when I looked at it this evening, I felt something was wrong.”

”What was wrong?” Kamon asked.

”I can’t say.” Old Qu held the lamp close to the base. ”I’ve built columns all my life; my eyes are sharper than a ruler. Whether it leans — I can tell nine times out of ten at a glance. This evening it looked straight. But the edge of its shadow — was faint.” He paused, and raised his head to Kamon: ”You’re checking it?”

The old master’s eye had done what the plumb line had done — caught the column’s secret without being told what to look for. He had not measured it; he had read it, the way he had read ten thousand columns in forty years, by the set of the stone and the hang of the shadow. The faint edge of the shadow was the same half fen that the plumb line had found — the column’s secret leaking out at its edge, invisible to any eye that did not know columns the way he knew them.

Kamon did not answer at once. He crouched and knocked twice on the column base with his knuckles; the column answered with a dull, solid sound — very solid.

”Checked.” Kamon said. ”The column is not leaning. Someone tampered with it — we have set it right.”

Old Qu’s face changed. He did not press for details; he only walked a circuit around the column, crouched, and smoothed the fresh mortar on the base himself, smoothing it even more evenly than it had been. When he straightened, he said:

”All my life I have built temples and guarded against men. At my age, I still failed to guard against them. Thank heavens for you.”

The smoothing of the mortar was the old master’s apology — to the column, and to the craft. He had built this temple’s columns and watched them like his own children, and the enemy had slipped past his eyes anyway; the fresh mortar was his way of making the column whole again with his own hand. He did not ask who had done it, or how; there were questions a craftsman did not need answered. He only knew the column was straight again, and that was enough.

The sky was still dark. Old Qu carried his small lamp, step by step, back toward the craftsmen’s village. The lamplight swayed on the stone paving — swaying like a shadow that refused to lie down.

Kamon’s men were seeded into the square that same night.

Not as open sentries — the open sentries were forty as before. The additions were men in plain clothes: short tunics, mixed into the crowd that had come to look at the lamps by night, taking their places one by one, at the positions marked out in daylight. All of them were guild craftsmen, chosen by Kamon through half the night — sharp-eyed, fast-handed, able to squat motionless, and with faces unknown, indistinguishable among the lamp-watching townsfolk. Two stood on either side of the eastern column; one beneath the tall northern column; one at the southwest corner; and one crouched outside each of the two bronze mirrors’ dark corners. They did not speak; they did not look at one another — townsfolk out for the evening air.

The choosing had been the slow part: Kamon had gone through the guild’s rolls man by man, setting aside the ones whose faces the city knew — the foremen, the masters, the men who had led crews on this very square — and keeping the ones whose names were written in ledgers but not in faces. The thirty-seven he chose had, between them, one quality in common: they could stand in one place for hours and become part of the ground. They had learned it at the works, squatting at their tasks through whole days; the square at night was no harder than a wall at noon.

Kamon carried a drawing against his breast. The drawing marked thirty-seven points: behind columns, behind walls, at colonnade corners, at the storehouse doorways. At each of the thirty-seven points stood a man. He unfolded the drawing once for Lu Zhu to see, folded it, and tucked it back.

The thirty-seven points had been chosen the way a fisherman chooses his nets: not by where the fish were, but by where they had to pass. The square’s voice carried from only a few places — the columns’ backs, the wall’s foot, the doorways — and every one of those places now had a man behind it. The enemy’s script called for three voices and three shadows; the net called for thirty-seven watchers. The arithmetic of the night was simple: they had counted our hours; we count their steps.

”The mirrors are still there.” Kamon said to Lu Zhu. ”Whoever goes to touch them will touch our hands instead.”

”Who holds the tube?” Lu Zhu asked.

”The tube is empty.” Kamon said. ”The real voice-carrying thing is still on them. My men are watching the east-city inn tonight.”

Lu Zhu raised his head. The east-city inn — ten days ago, a boat from the direction of Thebes had come alongside at the crossing, and several travelers in long robes had come ashore. The travelers had lodged at a small inn in the east of the city, two rooms. The attendant had said that when one of them paid, something had shown for an instant from his sleeve, catching the lamplight, bright, like copper.

”Bronze mirrors.” Lu Zhu said. ”Now we know.”

”The mirrors’ origin and the columns’ wedges were issued by the same hand.” Kamon said. ”I traced the peddler at the river flats — the line above him had run, but the goods’ grain matches. This batch of mirrors came out of the old temple of Thebes’s storehouses. The mirror-polishing hand is the old priests’ hand.”

The tracing had taken Kamon the better part of a day — from the inn to the river flats, from the peddler’s burned shack to the old temple’s storehouse records, following the goods’ grain the way a tracker follows a footprint. The old priests had cut their threads carefully, but they had not cut them all; a mirror’s polish and a wedge’s wood carried their own signatures, and those signatures matched one hand.

At the words ”the old temple of Thebes’s storehouses,” Lu Zhu said nothing; he only raised the lamp higher, looking at the back of the bronze mirror. The back was carved with a ring of fine lines, worn shallow — faint, like a mark that had been erased and not quite erased.

”So they are not stragglers.” Lu Zhu said. ”They are a formed company.”

”Right.” Kamon said. ”Mirrors for the mirrors. Columns for the columns. Voice for the voice. Three routes — one date.”

The two men stood on the square; the sky was fully dark. On the last night before the ceremony, the wind was still — so still that the sound of oars striking water could be heard from the river.

”Three routes,” Lu Zhu said, ”and we take three routes. They have spent a winter and a spring building their play; we have spent a year and a half building the stage. The stage is ours.”

The method of the net, he had worked through three times in daylight.

The wedge route: the columns were restored. At the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, no shadow would press the altar. They could not wait for their shadow — so they would have to make up for it elsewhere. Their first step of making up was to come check the columns. The checker would squeeze out of the crowd, crouch, and feel the base. He would feel fresh mortar, not his wedge. At that moment, Kamon’s man stood behind him. Do not arrest. Follow. See where he goes, see whom he meets.

The mirror route: the mirrors were still in the dark corner. Midway through the ceremony, someone would creep along the wall’s foot to retrieve them. The moment his hand touched the oilcloth, two hands would reach out of the dark, one left, one right, and pin him. Caught with the goods — the mirror face still shining, the whole field watching.

The voice route: the hardest, and the most important. Lu Zhu did not know where they meant to hide their ”oracle” — a bronze tube? a clay jar? or simply a mouth. So the thirty-seven points were the voice’s net. Behind columns, behind walls, at colonnade corners, at the storehouse doorways — at each point stood a man. Whoever crouched, was seen; whoever opened his mouth, was pinned.

Each of the three routes had been designed backward, from the moment of capture to the moment of waiting: the wedge route depended on the enemy’s own panic to lead the watchers to their accomplices; the mirror route depended on the enemy’s own timetable, arriving at the bait at the appointed hour; the voice route depended on nothing but the net’s completeness — thirty-seven points, no gaps, no corners left to hide a whisper. The three designs were the work of a builder who had learned to read an enemy the way he read a foundation: not by its surface, but by the stresses it could not hide.

”The voice is different.” Lu Zhu said to Kamon. ”Wedges and mirrors are dead things — take them in hand, and it is over. The voice is alive — once shouted, it cannot be taken back. So on the voice route, we have to make their mouths unable to open.”

”How?”

”Better than stopping them from shouting — let them shout, and find that no one believes.” Lu Zhu said. ”That depends on the ceremony’s ground. Ground steady, one shout cannot move it; ground shaken, one shout can overturn it. So tomorrow the most important thing is not catching people. It is steadying the field.”

The steadying of the field was the twenty-three trouble spots.

Before dark, he went over the twenty-three once more: the officials’ area position, its shadows falling on the boundary ropes; the lost-child platforms, one east, one west, half a head taller than a man; the four water points, moved outside the square, fine sand scattered around them; the grass screen standing before the west low wall, drinking the wind and the stray noise; the dispersal order — first the northern officials, then the eastern people, last the western, batch by batch.

The list was his own private map of the city’s chaos: every place where a crowd could press, a child could vanish, a foot could slip, a shadow could confuse — each one examined, measured, and answered before the crowd ever arrived. A ceremony that ran smoothly did not look prepared; it looked effortless. The twenty-three spots were the price of that effortlessness.

”And one more.” Lu Zhu said. ”After the Shen hour tomorrow, the western sun hangs low. The western people, looking east at the altar, stare straight into the light. I need them to turn their backs — no, they cannot turn; turning disorders the sectors. Have the western wardens move their people forward two paces in advance, to angle off the direct light.”

Kamon drew out his charcoal and wrote on a stone. He wrote slowly, stroke by stroke, recording the article on a thin stone slab he carried. The slab’s characters were for his own eyes, tomorrow.

The sector wardens, Kamon gave one final instruction. Forty men, squatting at the material yard, half a wheat cake each. Kamon stood and said:

”Tomorrow’s business is one thing: in your sector, know how many come in and how many go out. Whoever seems wrong, watch him first — don’t make a fuss, report to the hidden watch. Whoever’s eyes do not look at the altar, but slip over the crowd instead — he is wrong.”

The forty men listened with their cakes half-eaten, the way working men listen to an order they have heard before and mean to keep: not with attention, but with the settled attention of men who have already agreed. Each of them had been a neighbor, a foreman, a craftsman of this city for decades; each of them knew the faces of his sector the way he knew his own hand. The instruction was not a lesson; it was a reminder of what they already knew, spoken so that tomorrow, in the noise and the sun, it would come back to them at the right moment.

An old warden asked: ”What if someone truly does shout?”

”Then you shout yours.” Kamon said. ”He shouts ’divine punishment’; you shout ’stand still, everyone, stay where you are.’ You shout yours, he shouts his — see whose voice is louder. Tomorrow, thirty-five hundred of our own people stand on this square. Can’t they out-shout a few outsiders?”

The old warden swallowed the last bite of cake and said: ”They can.”

Before dispersal, Kamon walked the forty wardens through their ground once more. From each man’s sector to the nearest water point, to the nearest exit, and back. Each walk, a number was marked on the stone slab. The slowest was still the old warden in the south of the east sector — his legs were slow and his eyes not good, but everyone in his sector had been his neighbor for decades; a strange face, he knew with his eyes closed.

”Tomorrow, your sector,” Kamon said to him, ”about three hundred people. Keep the count in your heart; the walking — leave to the fast-legged man behind you.”

The old warden waved a hand: ”Three hundred people — I can count them with my eyes closed. It’s you I’m thinking of —” he looked at the guttering lamp by Kamon’s feet, ”it’s past midnight. You lot should rest a while too.”

Kamon did not answer. The lamp went out; he did not relight it. He looked at the eastern sky. Still dark — but in the dark, the light was already showing through, the way it always showed through when a long night was nearly done. He drew the stone slab from his breast, read the day’s articles by touch, and put it back. The day would be long; the slab would not forget.

The healing hall’s lamps also burned deep into the night.

Imset had not gone to the square. In the pharmacy he went through tomorrow’s gear once more: four medical posts, four chests of medicine, four labels — East, West, South, North — not one missing. Shafi stood beside him, handing the items one by one. When the last was handed over, she paused and said:

”Master — you once said the old temple’s priests had three tricks. Sound. Shadow. Sickness.”

”Mmm.” Imset said.

”Sound and shadow — Master Lu Zhu is watching them.” Shafi said. ”Sickness — that one is mine. Tomorrow, the people at the medical posts will not only watch the patients. They will watch the incense. Whoever carries incense, whoever lights it, whoever scatters the ash into the wind — the posts know how to stop them.”

The sickness route had been the one the two of them had talked about least, and Shafi had saved it for last, the way a careful general saves the hardest ground. Sound and shadow were visible — they could be seen and caught. Sickness was invisible; it entered the body through the breath, and by the time anyone knew it was there, it was already inside. The posts’ task was not to catch the sickness but to keep it outside the crowd’s lungs — a task that had no moment of glory, only a thousand small checks.

At this, Imset set down the packet in his hand and said: ”The incense ash is the cruelest of the three. In a crowd, when the wind blows, the ash mixes with something else and scatters; those who breathe it grow dizzy, nauseous, weak in the legs. The legs weaken, and the heart stirs. At that moment, one shout of ’divine punishment’ is truer than anything.”

He spoke with the flatness of a man describing a tool he has seen used: the ash was a tool, like the echo and the shadow — nothing holy about it, nothing mysterious, only the old priests’ patient craft of making men afraid. He had seen the ash used, in his years inside the temple, on crowds at festivals when the high priests wanted the people to feel the god’s breath. The dizziness, the nausea, the weakness — they were not signs of the god’s displeasure. They were signs of a well-ground herb.

”So the posts are set at all four corners.” Shafi said. ”Whoever grows dizzy — first carried to the post, one bowl of clear water down, then one question: where were you standing, and did you smell anything?”

”Good.” Imset said. ”Whatever is asked out — report it to the hidden watch.”

Imset raised his head, looked at her, and said: ”Stop them gently. Tomorrow is a ceremony, not a thief-catching. Hold the man, watch him — do not disturb the people around him.”

”I understand.” Shafi said. ”First hold the sickness outside the crowd. The rest — leave to Master Lu Zhu.”

Imset nodded, set the last packet into the chest, and closed the lid. His motions were slow, steady — like setting down something fragile.

”Tomorrow,” he said, ”check first. Believe after.”

Under the eaves outside the pharmacy, Shafi counted one final time. The four chests, she opened and closed one by one, re-pasting the East, West, South, North labels. When she reached the northern chest, she paused. The styptic cloth inside — she had counted it seven times, and it was still seven rolls, not one short. She remembered what she had said to Lu Zhu: after the dispersal, I count the chests; not one missing, and only then is it done. And Lu Zhu had said: call me when you count.

The counting had become, over the years, her private ritual — the one thing she could hold onto when the world around her moved faster than she could write it down. Seven rolls of cloth, four chests, four labels; the numbers were small and the numbers were true, and tomorrow, when the crowd had gone and the square was quiet again, she would count them one last time and the day would be finished.

Tomorrow, when she counted the chests, she really would go and call him. She thought this, closed and locked the last chest, and looked back once at the lamp in the pharmacy. It still burned; her teacher was still at the lamp with his old medical text. On nights like this, the healing hall’s lamp never went out.

On Meru’s caravan ground, the two hundred water jars stood filled, ranked in rows, mouths covered with wet cloth. Meru stood in the middle of the yard, counting them one by one. When he reached the last, he said to the night watchman: ”This water is the ceremony’s life. One jar short — I dock a tenday of your wages.”

The watchman rubbed his hands: ”Don’t worry, boss. I won’t sleep tonight.”

Meru said nothing. He walked a circuit around the jars, pressing the wet cloths down again on several mouths. When he was done, he looked up at the sky. It was full of stars.

”Tomorrow will be a clear day.” He said. ”A clear day is good. A clear day — the sun arrives on time.”

The sun arriving on time was, for Meru, the whole ceremony in one phrase: the crowd would come, the ceremony would run, the dispersal would flow through the streets the way his caravans flowed through the trade roads — and the city would wake up the next morning with a name it had not had before. He had calculated it the way he calculated every route: what the day needed, what the day would bring, what the day would leave behind. The two hundred jars were part of the calculation. So were the sixty boards.

East of the yard stood a stack of freshly whitewashed wooden boards. Those were the dispersal signboards — sixty in all, characters written on each; those who could not read followed the ones ahead. Meru walked over, took the top board, read its characters once by the lamp, set it back, and squared the stack.

”When the dispersal comes,” he told the watchman, ”the signboard-bearers stand one at every crossroads. Four thousand people walking out, and the city has only so many roads. The board wrong, and the people disorder; the people disorder, and the ceremony is wasted.”

The watchman nodded and counted the boards again. Sixty — not one short.

Only then did Meru sit down at the edge of the yard, drew out his pipe, knocked it out on the stone edge, and did not light it. He looked toward the temple — that stretch of lamps, burning bright.

”Tomorrow’s show,” he said, low, ”in all my years of trade, I’ve never seen anything this big. The ceremony succeeds, and the new capital’s name goes out. The name goes out, and the trade roads come alive. The roads come alive, and the days of all of us find a long-term footing.”

The night wind cooled his unlit pipe.

The darkness thickened, little by little.

Lu Zhu was the last one back at the rear courtyard of the official warehouse. He spread the ceremony’s flow plan under the lamp and went through it once more, from beginning to end: the sacrificial procession enters by the south gate, walks the central axis, mounts the altar; the three chief officiants — the chief officiant, the Overseer, and he; at the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, light fills the altar, no shadow upon it; the prayers, the address, the declaration. Beside each point he had marked the characters ”trouble spot” in charcoal — twenty-three of them — and he crossed them out, one by one, and wrote them back in, one by one.

The going-over was not for the plan’s sake — the plan had been settled days ago — but for his own: a man who has laid a night of nets wants, before he sleeps, to walk the nets once more in his mind, feeling each knot. The twenty-three marks were the knots. He crossed each one out and wrote it back in, the way a man counts a rope hand over hand before trusting his weight to it.

When the writing was done, he added a line of small characters at the drawing’s corner:

”Check first. Believe after.”

Those were the four characters Imset had taught him. Now they were written on tomorrow’s drawing.

Just past the Hai hour, Old Calendar-Keeper came by.

He had not slept; he stood at the gate of the rear courtyard, cradling the roll of old leather, looking as if he had something to say and did not know how to begin. Lu Zhu asked him in and poured him a bowl of water.

”Master Builder,” Old Calendar-Keeper said, ”I have gone over tomorrow’s hour once more. The end of Si and the beginning of Wu — correct. Thebes’s noon shadow, adjusted for the new capital’s position, counted back day by day — not a character off from your ledger.”

He had spent the evening in his room, the old rolls spread around him, doing the calculation a third time — not because he doubted the answer, but because the answer had become, in the past days, the one thing he could give the temple. His eyes were tired; his hands, steady. A man who has kept the calendar for a lifetime does not need to be told which numbers matter; he knows, because he has watched them keep the world.

”Do you trust my calculation?” Lu Zhu asked.

”I trust the sun.” Old Calendar-Keeper said. ”The sun keeps its promises better than people do.”

He finished the water, pressed the old roll tighter against his breast, walked to the gate, and turned his head once more: ”Tomorrow, I will stand on the north side, watching that column’s shadow fall on the calibration line. If it lands true — my lifetime’s ledger is settled.”

The words ”my lifetime’s ledger” carried more weight than the old man’s flat tone let on: a lifetime of watching the sky, of recording the sun’s hours for priests who used them to govern festivals, of being told his numbers mattered and never seeing them matter — and tomorrow, in front of the whole city, the numbers would stand up and do their work. The ledger would close even. He said it the way a man says a thing he has waited a lifetime to be able to say.

Lu Zhu nodded and saw him to the gate. The old man’s staff tapped the stone paving, one beat at a time, the sound carrying far in the night.

He blew out the lamp and walked into the courtyard. The night wind came up off the river, carrying moisture. In the distance, the lamps at the square’s four corners still burned — twice as many as usual; that was his order, the day before the ceremony, the lamps doubled. The whole city lay in those lamps, quietly, waiting for dawn.

And in the east-city inn, on the second floor, one window stood open.

No lamp inside. Several men in long robes sat in a ring in the dark; none of them had slept. Before them lay several things: a polished bronze mirror, two lengths of filed bronze tube, and a sheepskin drawn from a breast. On the sheepskin was a sketch of the new capital’s temple; the column on the square’s east side was marked with a deep sign.

”All checked?” A voice asked, low.

”Checked.” Another voice said. ”The column is still there. The wedge is still in the gap. Tomorrow, at the end of Si and the beginning of Wu, the shadow will press on.”

”And the mirror?”

The dark was still for a moment. Wind moved outside the window, rattling the shutter softly.

”In place. When we take it — keep to the wall’s foot, don’t disturb the night patrol.”

In the dark, someone shifted. It was the man of the voice — the youngest of the three, the two lengths of bronze tube pressed against his breast the whole time. He held back for a long while, then said, low: ”I keep feeling... the square is too still at night. Too still for a place where thirty-five hundred people are coming tomorrow.”

”Stillness is good.” The man of the wedge said, his voice pressed even lower. ”Stillness means no one suspects.”

”What if they do suspect?” The man of the mirror laughed coldly. ”The column leans, the shadow will press. The bronze mirror is still in place. They check the open ground; we walk the dark.”

The man of the wedge did not answer. He rose, walked to the window, and pushed the crack open half an inch more. The lamps in the direction of the square burned blindingly bright.

”The lamps are twice as many as the past few nights.” He said, slowly. ”The day before the ceremony, they doubled the lamps. That is not for the townsfolk — that is for the people watching the ground by night.”

”The more lamps, the brighter the lit places.” The man of the mirror said. ”The brighter the lit places, the blacker the dark. We walk the dark.”

The man of the wedge closed the window crack and returned to the dark. He sat down and said nothing more. Only he knew that a fine sweat had broken out on his back.

The sweat was the one thing the night could not hide — a professional’s body telling him what his mouth would not admit: that the doubling of the lamps was a move, and that moves meant someone was playing a game the three of them had not been told about. He had done this work for years, in the old temple’s service; he had never once seen the prey double the lamps on the eve. The dark, in his experience, belonged to the hunter. Tonight the dark felt watched.

No one spoke again. After a while, the young man of the voice drew out the bronze tubes and wiped them with the hem of his coat, once, and again. The bronze gave back no light in the dark — but his fingers knew how sharp the filed mouths were.

Out in the night, in the direction of the temple square, a stretch of lamps still burned. In the lamplight, several figures walked slowly past — unhurried, like men out for a stroll, or like men counting something.

The men in the inn said nothing more. They tucked the mirror and the tubes into their sleeves, folded the sheepskin and slipped it into a boot sole. Then, one by one, they lay down in their clothes.

They did not know that the wedge in the column on the square’s east side had been drawn out before dawn. The column was still that column; the gap was still that gap — but the thing in the gap was no longer theirs.

They did not know, either, that beneath those great lamps they had been watching, in the shadows, stood more people than stood in the daylight.

The night had grown very deep. The square was so still you could hear the wind. The wind came off the river, blowing through the forty-eight columns, past the rough-surfaced wall, past the two bronze mirrors still wrapped in oilcloth.

Everything seemed to be asleep.

Only the shadows were awake. On the eve of the great ceremony, the city slept, and the shadows kept the watch — the shadows under the lamps, the shadows behind the columns, the shadows that had been standing still for hours and would stand still until dawn. On the eve of the great ceremony, the city slept, and the shadows kept the watch.
