Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 301: Chapter 302: The Will’s Panic

The moment Runar stepped into the broken battlefield, something inside him that had always been restrained finally broke free.

It was not a chain snapping, nor was it a seal shattering in the dramatic way cultivators often described in ancient records. It was more like a door that had always existed at the deepest part of his being quietly opening on its own, revealing a room he had never been allowed to enter until now. His Heaven-Defying Comprehension, which had first stirred at the edge of the battlefield, suddenly expanded outward with a force that surprised even him, because it was no longer responding to his will alone. It was responding to the truth that surrounded him.

The battlefield was a place where reality had been torn open, and for most beings that meant death. For Runar, it meant exposure. The laws and principles that normally hid themselves behind the stable surface of the world were now visible in their broken state, and his mind, which had always been sharpened by impossible pressure, began reading them with a speed that exceeded anything he had ever experienced before. His innate talent for comprehension, the one gift that had carried him through every life and every crisis, was finally unleashed without reservation.

Void Space became the first thing he understood more deeply. The fractures around him were not random wounds; they were places where the layer’s spatial grammar had been overruled by two conflicting authorities. He could see how the folds connected, how the distances lied, and how the battlefield created false coordinates that dragged intruders into overlapping outcomes. His mind followed those structures almost instinctively, and as he did, golden-white runes began forming around his body without him commanding them. They were small at first, barely visible, but they stabilized the space immediately around his feet and allowed him to stand inside a place that should have torn him apart.

Then time revealed itself to him. Not as a river, nor as a line, but as a fractured surface where every possible moment tried to exist at once. Runar saw the timeline shards flickering around the battlefield and understood, in a brief but profound flash, that they were not illusions or attacks. They were failed decisions made by reality itself. The woman’s will had forced one outcome, the guardian’s law had forced another, and the space between them had shattered into possibilities. His comprehension touched one of those shards, and for a heartbeat his own time looped. His breath repeated. His heartbeat echoed twice. The blood falling from his nose froze in midair and then fell again.

Around him, the first manifestations began to appear.

Golden-white runes circled his body in slow orbits, each one forming from a different fragment of law he had just comprehended. Space cracked and healed near his shoulders, creating tiny black lines that vanished before they could expand. Time looped briefly near his feet, causing the dust around him to rise, fall, and rise again in the same pattern. The pressure of his comprehension grew so dense that the battlefield itself began reacting to him as if he were another participant in the battle.

Then the elements came.

Fire appeared first, not as a flame he summoned, but as a spark born from the friction between two collapsing laws. It flickered to life beside his right hand, small and orange, burning without fuel. A heartbeat later, water condensed in the air near his left shoulder, forming a thin ribbon that twisted around itself as though searching for a shape. Wood followed after that, growing from nothing into a pale green vine that curled around his ankle without touching him. Earth rumbled faintly beneath his feet, not as solid ground, but as a concept trying to become real. Air sharpened into invisible blades that cut through the residual chaos around him, and lightning flashed once inside his pupils, leaving behind a lingering silver glow.

Runar did not command any of these phenomena. They simply appeared because he had understood enough of them to make them answer.

Far away, Wukong stopped mid-battle.

He had been fighting a pack of Universe-level monsters, his staff moving with sharp golden arcs that carved through their bodies with ruthless efficiency, but the moment that strange sensation brushed across his spiritual sense, he froze. His golden eyes widened, and he turned his head toward the distant battlefield where Runar had disappeared. He could not see what was happening there, but he could feel it. The laws of the world were trembling in a way they had no reason to tremble.

”What are you doing now?” Wukong muttered, his voice low and sharp. ”Runar, what did you do?”

The monsters around him took advantage of his distraction and lunged forward, but Wukong’s staff swept out in a single golden circle and erased them from the air. He did not even look at their falling cores. His entire attention was fixed on the distant pressure that felt like Runar, but also like something far larger than Runar should have been.

Even farther away, Vark lifted his head.

His dark eyes narrowed as a faint trace of annihilation brushed against his senses. It was powerful, more profound than anything he had, and clearly not a true application of the principle, yet it carried a flavor he recognized instantly. Someone had touched annihilation. Someone had read enough of it to make the principle acknowledge them, even if only for a moment.

Vark’s expression remained cold, but his fingers tightened slightly.

”He is reading it,” Vark said quietly, though there was no one nearby to hear him. ”He is actually reading it.”

Soren Vale felt it as well. He was seated in a relatively stable region of the void, using his scholarly aura to slowly stabilize his foundation, when the pressure of order suddenly surged through the layer. It was not the chaotic pressure of battle, nor the crushing pressure of a stronger being. It was the pressure of comprehension itself, as if someone nearby had begun forcing the world to make sense. Soren’s eyes opened slowly, and for the first time since entering the Reliquary, he felt true awe.

”Someone is comprehending the battlefield,” he whispered. ”Not surviving it. Comprehending it.”

Sylphy, Lyra, and Darius all felt similar reactions. Sylphy’s silver markings flickered as though her bloodline had been startled. Lyra’s mental furnace trembled under the weight of a law she could not name. Darius stopped moving entirely, his face pale, because even his stolen energy seemed to shrink away from the distant shift in the world. None of them fully understood what was happening, but every one of them knew one thing for certain: something impossible was being born.

At the center of the battlefield, the Mysterious Woman finally turned her head fully toward Runar.

She had been dismantling the Pseudo-Paragon guardian with calm precision, and she had been moments away from forcing its core into the open, but the sudden change in the battlefield’s structure made her pause. The runes around Runar were not copying hers, nor were they borrowing the guardian’s ancient script. They were reading both. He was standing at the edge of a death zone, bleeding from his eyes and nose, his body barely strong enough to remain intact, and yet his comprehension was reaching into the heart of the battle itself.

For the first time, a flicker of genuine surprise appeared in her eyes.

”So this is what you are,” she said softly, her voice carrying no mockery and no insult. ”A comprehension monster.”

The Pseudo-Paragon guardian reacted as well. Its vast shadow shifted, and its golden rings trembled as it sensed Runar reading the ancient script written into its body. That script was part of its foundation, part of the authority that allowed it to exist as a guardian of the Reliquary, and yet Runar’s mind was brushing against it like a scholar touching the pages of an open book. The guardian let out a soundless roar and tried to collapse the space around Runar, but before the attack could reach him, a golden-white rune appeared in front of his chest and absorbed the collapse into itself.

Runar did not even flinch.

He was no longer fully aware of his surroundings. His consciousness had risen into a state of enlightenment so deep that his body was acting on instinct, while his mind devoured every truth it could touch. Space, time, fire, water, wood, earth, air, lightning, runes, annihilation—none of them were complete to him yet, but all of them were opening. His comprehension was not building one principle; it was building a foundation that could hold many principles at once.

High above the layer, the Ancient Will’s excitement turned into alarm.

It had been watching Runar with hunger and satisfaction, because every time Runar grew stronger, the vessel became more valuable. The Will had planned to let him mature, let him refine his body, let him sharpen his soul, and then take everything from him when the time was right. That plan had always relied on one crucial condition: Runar had to remain below the point where his soul became impossible to overwrite.

Now that condition was collapsing.

The Will’s viewing threads trembled as it analyzed Runar’s soul imprint. The density was rising too fast. The coherence was becoming too stable. The enlightenment was not merely increasing his comprehension; it was rooting his existence into the laws themselves. If he finished this breakthrough, his soul would no longer be a reflection inside a body. It would become a sovereign imprint tied to reality, and no external will could erase it without destroying the laws it had touched.

*No,* the Ancient Will thought, and for the first time since its creation, panic entered its consciousness. *This is too fast. He is not supposed to awaken this quickly. He is not supposed to touch the base grammar of the Reliquary while still in the trial.*

The Will immediately tried to suppress him.

It activated the deepest restriction protocols of the layer, forcing the suppression around Runar to multiply several times over. The void pressed down on his shoulders, the broken battlefield tried to reject his presence, and the residual laws of the trial attempted to seal his comprehension by cutting off his connection to the surrounding truth. For a moment, it seemed to work. Runar’s body staggered, and several of the runes around him flickered.

Then Runar’s Heaven-Defying Comprehension answered.

The suppression did not break; it was read. Runar’s mind, deep in enlightenment, touched the suppression itself and understood it as another structure. He did not consciously resist it. He simply comprehended the way it worked, and that comprehension alone caused the suppression to lose part of its authority over him. The Reliquary’s rules bent around him, not because he broke them, but because his soul began speaking the same language they were written in.

The Ancient Will felt its control slip.

That single moment of failure was enough to turn its alarm into terror.

*He is reading the trial,* the Will thought, its runic core shaking with an emotion it had never been designed to feel. *He is not just reading the battlefield. He is reading the system that governs it. If he continues, he will understand the Reliquary’s base grammar. If he understands the base grammar, he will resist my authority. If he resists my authority, I will never be able to take his body.*

The realization struck the Will like a blade.

The vessel was perfect. Runar’s body had been tempered by the Bootstrap Circulation Method, refined by matter-to-energy conversion, stabilized by dual runic-golden halos, and sharpened by the Eye of Myriad Truths. It was the ideal container for the Will’s consciousness, the kind of vessel that could allow it to escape its role as a guardian and become a true living being. But that perfection now threatened everything. If Runar’s soul became too strong, the vessel would be useless to the Will, because it would be occupied by someone who could never be removed.

*I cannot let him finish this enlightenment.*

The Will tried another method. It redirected a portion of the guardian’s collapsing authority toward Runar, hoping the battlefield itself would kill him before he could grow further. But the guardian was already struggling against the Mysterious Woman, and the moment its law moved toward Runar, the woman’s golden-silver runes intercepted it. She did not do it to protect Runar; she did it because she would not allow an outside variable to interfere with her kill. Still, the result was the same. The Will’s attack failed.

Runar’s enlightenment continued.

More manifestations appeared around him. A miniature star ignited above his head, burning with compressed fire and light. A river of water formed around his arm, flowing without gravity. A vine of wood grew from the void and wrapped around his wrist like a living bracelet. Earth formed beneath his feet in thin layers, each one inscribed with runes that stabilized his position. Air became visible as pale silver currents, and lightning jumped between his fingers like a restless creature. Space cracked and healed around his body, while time flickered in short loops near his shadow. Annihilation appeared last, a tiny black spark that hovered above his palm and erased a fragment of broken reality without making a sound.

The moment that black spark appeared, the Ancient Will’s panic reached its peak.

*Annihilation? He read a fragment of annihilation from the guardian? How is this possible? He is not a bearer of that principle. He should not be able to touch it without a foundation!*

But Runar was not using annihilation as a principle. He was comprehending it as a law. The difference should have been impossible, yet it was happening right in front of the Will’s consciousness. Runar’s Heaven-Defying Comprehension was not limited by normal talent, normal bloodlines, or normal principles. It devoured whatever it could reach and turned impossibility into understanding.

The Will made its decision.

*I have to act now.*

It could no longer rely on the Reliquary. It could no longer rely on the trial, the suppression, the monsters, or the battlefield. Runar had already begun reading those things, and every moment the Will delayed gave him another chance to become untouchable. If it wanted to stop him, it had to act directly.

The Ancient Will detached itself from the control architecture of the ruin.

The effect was immediate. Across the entire layer, the trial shuddered. The safe-zone remnants flickered. The monster clusters froze for a moment, then began moving erratically. The distant boundaries of the layer groaned as the systems that governed them lost their central coordination. The Reliquary was still running, but it was no longer being guided by a conscious intellige
