Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 304: Chapter 305: Devouring the Will 3

The mindscape had become a cage made of living law, rules and principles.

Golden-white runic structures tightened around the trapped Ancient Will like chains that had grown out of the world itself, each one pulsing with a quiet authority that did not need to announce its power. The structures were not static barriers or ordinary seals, because they continued to shift, multiply, and refine themselves with every passing moment, adapting to the Will’s existence and closing every possible path of escape before the Will could even think of taking it. Runes drifted through the air in slow orbits, but they no longer looked like distant stars. They looked like teeth. They looked like the opening mouth of something far older and far hungrier than the being it had tried to consume.

Runar stood at the center of it all, his golden-white eyes burning with a calm light that made the surrounding architecture respond to his will without hesitation. He was no longer merely watching the dissolution happen. He was driving it. The process that had begun as a defensive reaction was now being guided by his intent, sharpened by his comprehension, and sustained by the Heaven-Defying talent that had finally awakened to its true nature.

He was not creating the Principle of Devouring from nothing, nor was he pretending to understand a law he had never touched. He had possessed the Principle of Devouring before, or at least he had comprehended enough of it to wield it in battle. Long before entering the Reliquary, he had used that principle to devour a Void Devouring Dragon, and the act of consuming such a creature had elevated his understanding of devouring far beyond what ordinary study could have provided. That experience had left a deep mark on his soul, giving him a genuine foundation in a principle that most beings would never even have the chance to perceive.

Under normal circumstances, he would have activated the Principle of Devouring directly and let it consume the Ancient Will with the natural authority of a law he had already proven in combat. But the Reliquary’s suppression locked all principles beneath its iron grammar, preventing him from using the principle the way he normally would. The suppression did not erase his understanding, because comprehension could not be stripped away as easily as power, but it did prevent the principle from functioning through its usual path. So Runar did what his Heaven-Defying Comprehension allowed him to do. He translated the Principle of Devouring into runes, rebuilt its structure from memory and understanding, and forced the suppressed world to accept that runic imitation as a legitimate expression of the law.

What surrounded the Ancient Will was therefore not a fake devouring technique, nor was it a hollow simulation without foundation. It was a runic reconstruction of a principle Runar had already walked, shaped by his comprehension and given form through the Principle of Runes. Because the foundation was real, the simulation was terrifyingly effective. Because his Heaven-Defying Comprehension was guiding it, the runic devouring became almost indistinguishable from the true principle itself.

His mind had become a furnace that did not burn fuel so much as it converted truth into understanding. Every fragment of the Ancient Will that peeled away was not destroyed in the ordinary sense. It was read, broken down, sorted, and absorbed. Its runic authority became grammar. Its memories became experience. Its knowledge became foundation. Its comprehension became part of Runar’s own path. The mindscape accepted each fragment as though it had always belonged there, and with every absorption the golden-white world around Runar grew deeper, wider, and more complete.

This is what comprehension is supposed to be, Runar thought, and even in the middle of such a dangerous situation, a quiet sense of exhilaration moved through him. Not just learning. Not just analyzing. Taking what stands before me and making it part of my truth.

The first flood of knowledge hit him almost immediately.

It began as a trickle, then became a river, and then became an ocean that crashed against his consciousness with a force that would have shattered a weaker soul. Memories spanning trillions of years poured into him, not as images alone, but as lived experience compressed into meaning. He saw the Reliquary being shaped in the aftermath of the Rune Sovereign’s departure. He saw the Ancient Will being born from compressed script and given its first directive. He saw countless cycles of trials, countless participants entering the ruin, countless deaths, countless failures, and countless disappointments. He saw the Will watching, learning, changing, and slowly developing something its creator had never intended: desire.

Runar’s mind expanded violently under the pressure of that information, but he did not flinch. His Heaven-Defying Comprehension devoured the incoming flood and organized it with terrifying speed, separating useless noise from valuable truth and refining both into usable understanding. New connections formed inside his consciousness at impossible speed. Old insights he had gained from the Reliquary’s trials collided with the Will’s ancient knowledge and fused into deeper realizations. Things he had only partially understood before became clear. Things he had not even known existed revealed themselves to him like hidden rooms opening inside a house he had thought he already knew.

The Will’s comprehension of the Principle of Runes entered him next.

This was not the shallow application of runic structures, nor was it the borrowed language Runar had been using since entering the Reliquary. This was a profound, ancient, and deeply refined understanding of runes as the foundational grammar of reality. The Will had been created from runes, sustained by runes, and tasked with governing a ruin built upon runic law. Its mastery was not complete compared to the Rune Sovereign’s, but it was far deeper than anything Runar had previously held. The moment that mastery began settling into his soul, his entire understanding of the Principle of Runes leapt forward. Structures he had once considered impossible became obvious. Applications he had never imagined became natural. The runic-golden halos around his heart and brain resonated with a clarity so sharp that the mindscape itself seemed to brighten in response.

Then came the other principles.

The Principle of the Elements unfolded inside him like a vast map of fire, water, wood, earth, air, lightning, ice, metal, and countless other elemental concepts that mortal cultivators would never have been able to name. The Principle of Void Space revealed the hidden architecture of distance, boundaries, folds, and dimensional pressure. The Principle of Time showed him fragments of loops, delays, acceleration, decay, and the subtle ways in which moments could be rewritten without destroying causality. The Principle of Dimension opened his awareness to layers of existence stacked over one another like pages in an infinite book. The Principle of Analysis sharpened his perception until even the smallest fragment of principle could be separated into meaning, structure, purpose, and weakness.

There were more. Far more.

Principles of suppression. Principles of spatial sealing. Principles of soul imprinting. Principles of trial design. Principles of monster creation. Principles of energy conversion. Principles of law enforcement within sealed realms. The Ancient Will had not mastered all of them completely, because it was not a true Paragon or an absolute sovereign, but it had observed them, used them, and refined its understanding of them for longer than most civilizations had existed. That accumulated knowledge now belonged to Runar.

The sensation was overwhelming, but it was not painful in the way pain normally worked. It was too full, too profound, and too perfectly aligned with his nature to be called suffering. It felt like every question he had ever asked was finally being answered at the same time. It felt like every wall he had ever faced was revealing the door he had always known existed. It felt like the path he had walked his entire life had been leading him to this exact moment, where comprehension itself became a form of supreme power.

For a being whose identity was built on understanding, this was bliss.

Pure, focused, and terrifying bliss.

The Ancient Will felt that bliss through the connection between them, and for the first time in its endless existence, it understood that it had made a mistake so fundamental that no calculation could correct it. It had entered the mind of a being who did not merely use comprehension as a tool. It had entered the mind of a being who lived for comprehension, breathed through comprehension, and defined himself by comprehension. It had brought its knowledge, its memories, and its authority into the one place where all of those things could be eaten.

”Stop,” the Will said.

Its voice was no longer the calm, systematic tone it had used when announcing the rules of the trial. It was distorted now, fracturing at the edges, as though every word cost it a piece of its remaining self. Runar did not answer. His golden-white eyes remained fixed on the dissolving presence before him, and the runes around him continued to tighten with quiet, relentless precision.

”You do not understand what you are doing,” the Will continued, and this time its voice carried the sharp edge of threat. ”I am the guardian of the Reliquary. I am the intelligence left behind by the Rune Sovereign’s design. If you devour me, you will mark yourself. Every force that ever feared this ruin will learn what you have done. Every Paragon who seeks the Sovereign’s legacy will hunt you. Every ancient race, every supreme bloodline, every existence that stands above this Multiverse will turn its gaze toward you. You will not survive the pursuit.”

Runar’s expression did not change.

The dissolution continued.

Another fragment of the Will peeled away and sank into the golden-white structures surrounding them. This fragment carried memories of the Reliquary’s previous openings, of beings who had entered the trial and failed, of monsters that had been cultivated inside sealed layers, and of rewards that had been distributed according to the Will’s hidden calculations. All of it became Runar’s. All of it strengthened him. All of it proved that the Will’s threats were empty, because the Will itself was already becoming part of the person it was trying to threaten.

Seeing that the threat had failed, the Will changed tactics.

”Wait,” it said, and its voice became smoother, though the tremor beneath it could not be hidden. ”We do not need to destroy each other. I can give you what you want. I can unlock the deepest layers of the Reliquary. I can unseal the true inheritance chambers. I can show you the Rune Sovereign’s private research without delay. I can make you the official heir. I can grant you authority over the trial, the monsters, and the rewards. Stop this, and we can cooperate. You will gain everything faster than you ever could through struggle.”

Runar’s eyes flickered faintly, not because he was tempted, but because the Will’s offer reminded him of how predictable fear could be. The Ancient Will had spent countless cycles manipulating participants, testing them, filtering them, and using the promise of inheritance to control their behavior. Now it was trying to do the same thing to him, as though he was just another desperate cultivator standing before a gate and begging for permission to enter. It did not understand that he had never wanted permission. He had always wanted the truth, and truth did not need to negotiate with a thief.

He remained silent.

The mindscape tightened again.

More of the Will’s existence was pulled into the golden-white light. Its understanding of Void Space entered Runar in a surge of dark clarity, revealing how the Reliquary’s layers were folded over one another and how the trial ground could be expanded, compressed, or isolated depending on the needs of the test. Its understanding of dimensional barriers followed immediately after, showing Runar the hidden seams that connected the Reliquary to the outside Multiverse and the reasons why the ruin’s opening had been so difficult to detect. Each piece of knowledge made Runar’s foundation more terrifying, and each moment of silence made the Will’s fear more real.

”Please,” the Will said, and now its voice was no longer smooth at all. ”You do not have to erase me completely. I can leave. I can abandon the Reliquary. I can give you my authority and vanish. Let me keep a fragment of myself. Let me survive. I have existed for longer than your stars. I have watched civilizations rise and fall. I do not want to disappear.”

Runar finally looked at it directly, and the calm in his eyes made the Will’s remaining consciousness tremble more violently than any attack could have.

”You chose this,” Runar said quietly. ”You saw my enlightenment and decided it was the perfect moment to erase me. You entered my soul with killing intent. You did not come here to negotiate. You came here to steal my body. Now you are becoming part of my path. That is the only mercy I can offer you.”
