Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 342: Chapter 343: First Steps in the Higher Sea

The first period in the Omniverse was not spent moving.

It was spent adjusting.

Everything here operated differently. Distance was not a fixed measurement. Time was not a forward-flowing river. Causality did not chain events together the way it had in the Multiverse. Instead, these things existed as options — directions you could choose to move in, rather than roads you were forced to walk. Entire Multiverses could be observed as complete units from the outside, their internal timelines visible like pages in a book you could flip through at will.

Celestia adapted through structure.

Her storm lattice reached outward carefully, mapping the rules of this new reality the same way she had mapped every environment she had ever entered. She tested the boundaries of perception. She measured how her principles interacted with the higher reality substance that saturated everything. She built a framework of understanding around the Omniverse’s behavior, one careful observation at a time.

The rules are not absent, she thought, her lattice adjusting another layer. They are simply written in a language I have not learned yet. But languages can be learned.

Nyla adapted through curiosity.

She did not try to map the rules systematically. Instead, she poked at things. She tested how her perception interacted with the higher reality by looking at it from different angles, asking different questions, and generating new hypotheses in real time. Her curiosity engine spun constantly, producing and discarding theories faster than Celestia could have verified them.

This is like being a child again, Nyla thought, watching a nearby Multiverse shift its internal timeline in response to something she could not yet identify. Except the playground is infinite and the toys are actual realities.

Runar adapted the fastest.

Absolute Comprehension did not need to map the rules slowly. It read them. The moment Runar’s perception touched the Omniversal-level information surrounding them, his principle began processing it with an efficiency that would have taken other new ascendants centuries to match. Distance, time, causality, perception, interaction — all of it was being sorted, categorized, and integrated into his understanding at a speed that made the adjustment period feel less like learning and more like remembering.

He did not announce this. He simply stood quietly beside Celestia and Nyla, letting them find their own footing while he quietly finished finding his.

The Omniverse has its own grammar, he thought. It is not the same as the Multiverse’s. But it is still a grammar. And grammars can be read.

---

They began observing.

It was difficult not to. The Omniverse was filled with Multiverses, and the Multiverses were filled with activity. From their position at the edge of the higher sea, the three of them could see countless realities playing out below them — some bright and chaotic, some quiet and slow, some dark and still. Each one was a complete world. Each one was alive with beings who believed their existence was the whole of reality.

And the Omniversals watched and guarded them.

Runar saw it first. A presence very far from their position — another Omniversal being, older and more settled than Aelome — was observing a Multiverses with the casual attention of someone watching a slow-moving river.

Runar had only seen him because of his advanced perception backed up by his Absolute Principle of Comprehension.

The being did not interfere. It simply watched, its perception resting on the Multiverse the way a person might rest their gaze on a painting in a gallery.

Then another Omniversal acted.

This one was much closer, but the effect was visible even from where the three of them stood. The being reached into a Multiverse — not physically, but with its will — and dropped something inside. A soul. A consciousness. A being plucked from somewhere else and placed into a lower world with no explanation, no context, and no apparent purpose other than the Omniversal’s own amusement.

Inside the Multiverse, the dropped soul woke in a strange body, in a strange world, with no idea why it was there.

The Omniversal watched for a moment, then moved on.

Nyla stared. ”Did that being just... put a person in a random world?”

”Yes,” Runar said.

”For fun?”

”Most likely.”

Nyla’s expression twisted. ”That’s horrible.”

Celestia’s storm lattice tightened slightly. ”It is,” she said quietly. ”And it is also completely normal here.”

They watched more. Another Omniversal altered a physical law inside a Multiverse — not to destroy it, but to see what would happen. The civilization inside that world experienced the change as a sudden, inexplicable shift in the nature of gravity. Buildings fell. People screamed. The Omniversal observed the chaos for a few moments, then restored the law and moved on, as though nothing had happened.

Another Omniversal saved a civilization. A dying world, on the brink of collapse, was suddenly stabilized by an external hand. The beings inside wept with relief, prayed to gods they did not understand, and celebrated their miraculous salvation. The Omniversal who had saved them lost interest within moments and turned its attention elsewhere.

Celestia found the casualness unsettling. Her storm lattice pulsed with quiet disapproval each time she witnessed another act of whimsical interference. These were not evil beings. They were not cruel. They simply operated at a level where the suffering of lower beings registered as background noise.

They do not hate the civilizations they break, Celestia thought. They simply do not think about them. That is worse.

Nyla found it fascinating but disturbing. Her curiosity engine wanted to understand the psychology of beings who could treat entire realities as entertainment. But understanding something did not mean accepting it.

”I get it,” she said slowly, watching another Omniversal reshape a small region of a Multiverse for no apparent reason. ”From up here, it looks different. Smaller. Less real. But knowing that doesn’t make it okay.”

Runar observed it all with calm dryness. He did not condemn the Omniversals. He did not accept their behavior as natural. He simply watched, read, and understood.

From this level, lower existence does look different, he thought. The scale changes the perspective. But perspective is not justification. I understand why they do this. I do not agree with it.

He did not adopt the same indifference automatically. He noted that fact about himself and filed it away. It mattered.

---

While Celestia and Nyla observed the culture of the Omniverse, Runar’s Absolute Comprehension began its real work.

The Omniversal-level information surrounding them was dense, complex, and written in a grammar that no Multiversal being had ever been equipped to read.

But Runar was no longer a Multiversal being. His foundation had been refined beyond the limits of his native structure. His soul core had been evolved by the higher reality substance. And his Absolute Comprehension was not a principle that needed time to warm up. It was a principle that read.

He began mapping the higher rules.

The structure of observed Multiverses became clear to him first. He saw how they generated their own internal laws, how they sustained themselves, how they interacted with the higher reality substance that permeated the Omniverse. He saw the points where they were vulnerable. He saw the points where they were self-repairing. He saw the conditions under which they could be consumed.

Then he moved to the behavior of Omniversal perception. How did these beings see? How did they interact? What were the limits of their influence, and what were the rules that governed their interference? He read the subtle laws that determined what an Omniversal could and could not do to a Multiverse, and he noted that those laws were fewer than he had expected.

There was very little regulation here. The Omniverse was not governed by a central authority. It was governed by custom, habit, and the quiet understanding that direct conflict between Omniversal beings was costly and rare. Beyond that, each being operated according to its own preferences.

Runar mapped all of this in a fraction of the time it would have taken any other new ascendant.

And this did not go unnoticed.

---

Several older Omniversals turned their attention toward the three newcomers.

It was subtle. No one approached directly. No one spoke. At this level, attention was expressed through observation, through the quiet shifting of perception toward a point of interest, through the gentle pressure of a being choosing to look rather than to act.

One ancient presence lingered near the edge of their awareness for several cycles before moving on. It did not speak. It simply watched, assessed, and departed.

Another presence was more direct. A being of considerable age drifted past their position and paused, its perception sweeping over Runar with open curiosity. It lingered on his foundation for a long moment, then moved on without speaking. The curiosity in its attention was not hostile. It was the curiosity of someone who had seen a strange new species and wanted to understand it before deciding whether it mattered.

A third presence was different. Older. Heavier. Its attention settled on Runar and stayed. It did not press. It did not probe. It simply rested there, watching, as though it were waiting to see what the new arrival would do next.

Runar felt all of them. He did not react. He continued his mapping, his comprehension working steadily through the Omniversal-level information without pause.

Celestia felt the attention too. Her storm lattice tightened reflexively, then relaxed when she confirmed that none of the presences carried hostile intent.

”We are being watched,” she said quietly.

”Yes,” Runar answered.

”Should we be concerned?”

”Not yet. They are curious. Curiosity is not aggression.”

Nyla glanced around, her curiosity engine tracking the various presences that had noticed them. ”How many?”

”Several,” Runar said. ”Most will lose interest once we stop being new. A few will continue watching.”

Celestia considered this. ”And the ones who continue watching?”

Runar’s golden-white eyes remained steady. ”They will be the ones who matter.”

He did not elaborate further. He did not need to. The three of them understood the basic truth of their situation: they had arrived in a place where they were small, new, and unknown. The beings here had existed for lengths of time that made their decades of cultivation feel like a single breath. Caution was not optional. It was survival.

But Runar also understood something else.

The Omniverse was not peaceful because it was safe. It was peaceful because most beings here had nothing left to fight over. There was no territory to conquer. No resources to hoard. No hierarchy to climb. The only things that still mattered were knowledge, entertainment, and survival against the one threat that could still touch them.

Verse Eaters.

That name sat quietly in the back of Runar’s mind, filed alongside everything else he had learned since arriving. He did not know when it would become relevant. He did not know if it would ever become relevant to him directly. But Absolute Comprehension had noted the way Aelome’s tone had shifted when he mentioned them. The way the older Omniversals’ attention sharpened slightly at the name.

The only real threat here, Runar thought. The only thing that can still matter to beings who have everything else.

He stored the information and returned to his mapping.

The Omniverse stretched out around them, infinite and patient. The Multiverses below continued their endless stories. The Omniversals above continued their endless watching. And three newcomers stood at the edge of it all, learning the shape of a world that had no ceiling and no floor.

Celestia’s storm lattice settled into a new rhythm, adapted to the higher reality. Nyla’s curiosity engine hummed with quiet excitement, already planning the next thing she wanted to explore. Runar’s Absolute Comprehension continued its work, silent and relentless, reading the Omniverse the way it had once read the Multiverse.

The first steps had been taken.

The higher sea was vast.

And the three of them had only just begun to swim.
