Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 328: Chapter 329: Residues of the Dead

The loop did not pause.

Absolute Comprehension continued its endless intake, but the focus of the flood shifted. The present Multiverse, with all its living systems and active hybrid experiments, had already been largely mapped. The densest remaining concentrations of unreformed knowledge now lay in the past — in the residues of the dead.

Runar turned his perception toward them.

Extinct universes unfolded before him like vast, silent tombs. Some had died quietly, their laws simply running out of energy and collapsing into formless void. Others had ended in catastrophic principle conflicts, leaving behind scarred remnants of contradictory laws that still flickered weakly in the dark. A few had been deliberately erased by forces long forgotten, their histories scrubbed so thoroughly that only Absolute Comprehension could still read the faint outlines of what had once existed.

He read them all.

Dead power systems poured into the loop in endless succession. Martial paths that had tempered flesh until the body itself became a universe-scale weapon, only to discover that pure physical authority had a hard ceiling. Magical systems that had refined spell structures to such perfection that they could rewrite local reality, yet still failed when faced with something that existed outside the concept of ”spell.” Bloodline hierarchies that had accumulated the strength of a trillion generations, only to stagnate when the original blood grew too diluted or too pure. Conceptual frameworks that had tried to treat the Multiverse as a single equation and solve it, only to find that the equation itself was incomplete.

Many of these systems had reached the peak of what the Multiverse could support. A significant number had brushed against the boundary that separated Paragon from whatever lay beyond. A few had come heartbreakingly close to something that could only be called Transcendent — or further — before collapsing under their own weight.

Runar examined the failures with the same calm precision he applied to everything else.

One martial path had pushed physical refinement so far that its practitioners could shatter dimensional barriers with bare hands, yet they had never solved the problem of will durability. When the body became strong enough to destroy universes, the mind and soul still fractured under the strain. The entire system had died with its last generation of broken monsters.

One pure soul-path had achieved near-perfect immortality of consciousness, allowing its users to persist even after their universes collapsed. But they had never developed a method to generate new novelty. Immortal and unchanging, they had simply watched the Multiverse move on without them until their residual wills faded into silence.

One technological civilization had rejected all mystical laws and reached Multiversal scale through pure computation and energy manipulation. They had built machines that could simulate entire universes and extract principles from the simulations. In the end their own simulations had become more real than the civilization itself, and the original creators had been overwritten by the very systems they designed.

Each failure was dissected completely. Absolute Comprehension extracted the exact point of collapse, the hidden assumption that had proven false, the missing piece that would have allowed the path to continue. Origin Weave took those extracted lessons and began incorporating them into the higher-order structures it was already generating, turning dead ends into foundations for something better.

Then he found the one that fascinated him.

It had belonged to a universe that no longer possessed even a residual coordinate. The system itself was pure conceptual authority — a path that rejected energy, matter, bloodline, and soul in favor of direct manipulation of causality. Its practitioners did not cultivate power. They cultivated the right to decide what was allowed to happen.

At its peak, a single high-level user of this path could look at a sequence of events and rewrite the causal links between them. Cause and effect became suggestions rather than rules. A death could be made to precede the wound that should have caused it. A breakthrough could be forced to occur before the comprehension that justified it. Entire histories could be gently adjusted so that the desired outcome had ”always” been inevitable.

The system had climbed with terrifying speed.

It had reached the threshold of something beyond Paragon. For a brief, glorious period, its strongest practitioners had stood at the edge of rewriting the fundamental operating rules of the Multiverse itself. They had begun constructing a conceptual framework that would have allowed them to treat the entire Multiverse as a single causal object — something that could be edited, optimized, or even replaced.

Then it collapsed.

The failure point was elegant and absolute. The more thoroughly a practitioner rewrote causality, the more their own existence became dependent on the new causal structure they had created. When two high-level users attempted overlapping rewrites, the contradictory causal webs annihilated each other and took the practitioners with them. The system had no mechanism for resolving competing authority over reality. The final generation of its strongest members had erased one another in a cascade of mutually exclusive histories, leaving behind only fragments of a path that had almost touched the Omniverse.

Runar studied the core of the dead system for a long time.

Absolute Comprehension laid every remaining fragment bare. Origin Weave turned those fragments over, testing them, refining them, stripping away the fatal flaw. The principle of causal authority was not discarded. It was purified. The competitive, zero-sum nature of the original path was removed. In its place, Origin Weave began constructing a higher-order structure that treated causality not as a territory to be owned, but as a material to be woven — something that could be shaped collaboratively with other principles rather than in opposition to them.

The new structure was still incomplete. It would require more material from the future and alternate layers before it could stabilize. But the foundation was already clean, elegant, and free of the contradiction that had killed its predecessor.

Runar’s thoughts remained quiet and analytical as the refinement continued.

Many of the Multiverse’s current limitations existed for a simple reason. The early Paragons, faced with the same dead ends and near-successes he was now reading, had chosen the safer, slower method. Instead of continuing to push direct comprehension into territories that repeatedly killed their practitioners, they had institutionalized the reincarnation-harvest system. They had decided that novelty was best generated by forcing countless lesser lives to collide and experiment, then collecting the results after the fact. It was efficient in its own way. It was also a quiet admission of defeat. They had looked at the residues of the dead, seen how close some paths had come, and chosen not to risk following them.

They had built a machine that could generate endless hybrid knowledge while keeping the true Paragons themselves relatively safe.

Runar had no such limitation.

He continued digesting the past until the density of unreformed knowledge began to thin. Extinct universes gave up the last of their secrets. Dead power systems were fully mapped, their failures understood, their useful cores extracted and handed to Origin Weave. The residues of the dead were finite. There was only so much history, only so many collapsed paths, only so many echoes left to read.

When the final major concentration of past-layer knowledge finished flowing into the loop, Runar noted the fact with the same calm he applied to everything else.

The past was finite.

It had been thoroughly consumed.

The future and the alternate layers still stretched further — denser in some places, more incomplete in others, but far from exhausted. Absolute Comprehension was already beginning to turn toward them, and Origin Weave was already preparing new structures to receive whatever came next.

The loop continued without pause.

In the sealed pocket dimension, Celestia and Nyla continued their own work, unaware of the specific dead system their husband had just refined, yet still receiving the quiet, perfectly tailored runoff of insight that the ongoing digestion produced. The storm lattice and the curiosity engine both grew a little denser, a little more refined, as if the Multiverse itself had decided to offer them the cleaned and improved remnants of paths that had once failed.

Runar floated in the void, expression unchanged.

The residues of the dead had been read.

The living process moved on.
