Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 336: Chapter 337: The Monkey Walks Free

The inheritance dimension had no true sky.

It was a place of shifting golden clouds, endless broken peaks, and rivers of fermented spiritual wine that flowed uphill whenever they felt like it. Time moved strangely there. Decades in the outside Multiverse could pass in what felt like a long, drunken dream, or a single night of fighting could stretch into years of refinement. Wukong had stopped counting long ago, because counting only reminded him how long he had been trapped inside a place where even the rivers had a drinking problem.

He stood at the center of the final trial ground, barefoot, staff resting loosely across his shoulders, and a half-empty gourd dangling from one finger. His fur was a deeper gold than when he had first been swallowed by the Multiversal storm. His eyes carried a clearer, wilder light. The Monkey Drunken Dance inheritance no longer sat outside him like a technique to be learned. It had sunk into his bones, his blood, and the irregular rhythm of his breathing.

The trial ground around him looked like a battlefield that had given up on being serious. Broken peaks leaned at impossible angles. Golden clouds drifted low enough to touch. The smell of spiritual wine hung in the air like a permanent invitation to make bad decisions. Wukong had fought through hundreds of trials in this place, but the final one was different. It did not feel like a test. It felt like a door waiting for him to stop pretending he did not know how to open it.

He took a long drink from the gourd and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

”Alright,” he said to the empty air. ”Let’s finish this.”

The inheritance responded.

Golden light rose from the broken peaks and formed shapes around him. They were not enemies in the normal sense. They were reflections. Some looked like past versions of himself — younger, angrier, more reckless, still trying to prove something with every swing of his staff. Others looked like opponents he had faced over the years. A few looked disturbingly like Runar, though those ones moved too calmly and made Wukong want to throw his gourd at them out of pure irritation.

The first wave attacked.

Wukong moved without thinking. His staff swept out in a lazy arc that looked almost careless, but it struck three of the golden reflections at once. They shattered into light. His feet stumbled sideways in a way that should have left him open, but the stumble became a dodge, the dodge became a spin, and the spin carried his staff into the next attacker’s chest.

The Monkey Drunken Dance was not a technique that rewarded perfect posture. It rewarded honesty.

Move like you mean it, Wukong thought, grinning as another reflection burst apart. Don’t look good. Be real.

The second wave came faster. These shapes did not attack with fists or weapons. They attacked with doubt. One of them wore the expression he had made when Runar first left him behind. Another carried the quiet fear he had felt when he realized the Multiverse was far bigger and far more dangerous than he had ever imagined. A third simply stood still and looked at him like he was not enough.

Wukong’s grin faltered for half a breath.

Then he laughed.

”No,” he said. ”I’m not doing that today.”

He swung his staff in a wide, drunken circle, and the golden shapes exploded into harmless light. The attack was not precise. It was not elegant. It was exactly what he felt in that moment — refusal, humor, and a stubborn refusal to be made small by his own memories.

The inheritance dimension trembled.

Wukong felt it immediately. The trial was not trying to defeat him anymore. It was listening.

The final stage of the Monkey Drunken Dance had never been about mastering the inheritance. It had been about becoming completely, unapologetically himself. Movement without hesitation. Chaos without fear. Instinct sharpened into something that could tear through laws when necessary and dance around them when it was more fun. The inheritance did not want a disciple who could copy its forms. It wanted a successor who could make the path his own.

Wukong understood that now.

He had spent years trying to learn the inheritance properly. He had tried to follow its patterns, respect its rules, and prove that he deserved it. That had been the wrong approach. The moment he stopped trying to deserve it was the moment it started listening.

He planted his staff into the ground and let go.

The golden reflections froze.

Wukong closed his eyes and simply stood there, breathing in the wine-heavy air, feeling the strange rhythm of the dimension pulse through the soles of his bare feet. He did not prepare a technique. He did not gather power. He just existed as himself — messy, impatient, loyal, reckless, funny, fierce, and completely unwilling to become anyone else.

The inheritance recognized him.

Not as a student who had finally met its standards, but as a successor who had made the path his own.

Golden light erupted from the peaks and rivers, wrapping around his body in a wild, laughing spiral. The dimension itself seemed to toast him. The wine rivers surged upward. The broken peaks straightened just enough to bow. The golden clouds swirled overhead in patterns that looked suspiciously like a crowd cheering.

Wukong laughed.

”About damn time,” he said.

Power flooded through him. It did not settle into neat layers or stable rings. It crashed through his foundation like a festival breaking through a locked gate. His bones hardened. His blood ran hot. His instincts sharpened until he could feel the local laws of the dimension bending around him, not because he forced them, but because they could not decide whether to take him seriously or get out of his way.

The foundation he had built inside the inheritance completed itself.

It was not as dense as Runar’s. It was not as absolute. It did not carry the terrifying weight of someone who had read the entire Multiverse and finished it like a book. Wukong’s foundation was wild, free, and full of rough edges that refused to be polished away. It carried the potential to reach Paragon and keep going beyond it, but it would never become orderly. That was the point.

He felt the path ahead of him open.

Not a straight path. Not a safe one. A drunken, laughing, unpredictable path that wound through chaos and freedom in equal measure. It suited him perfectly.

The barriers that had kept him sealed for so long began to unravel.

Wukong did not wait for a polite exit.

He grabbed his staff, rolled his shoulders, and smashed straight through the weakening boundary with a single wild swing. The barrier cracked like old glass, then burst outward in a shower of golden fragments. He tumbled back into the Multiverse in a burst of wild energy, laughing the entire way.

He landed on the broken edge of a drifting continental fragment, boots finally touching real stone again. The impact sent cracks spreading through the surface, but he did not care. The air of the wider Multiverse rushed into his lungs. It smelled different — larger, messier, full of too many conflicting laws and too many ambitious fools.

He loved it immediately.

Wukong stretched until his joints popped, rolled his neck, and looked out across the endless stretch of voids and distant universes with a fierce, satisfied grin.

”Missed you, you ridiculous place.”

His presence had changed. He was no longer the talented but still-developing fighter who had once run beside Runar. The Multiverse itself seemed to take a slight step back from the chaotic pressure he casually released. Not because he was trying to intimidate it. Because his existence had become too lively to ignore.

For a moment he simply stood there, feeling the scale of everything around him. The Multiverse was vast, ancient, and filled with beings far older than he was. Somewhere out there were Paragons, ancient factions, forgotten ruins, and dangers he had not even imagined yet. Somewhere out there was Runar, probably doing something terrifyingly calm.

Wukong’s grin softened slightly.

Wonder where you are now, he thought. Probably somewhere impossible. Probably making a Paragon nervous without even trying.

The thought did not make him bitter. It made him laugh.

He was still grinning when the automatic message activated.

It arrived without fanfare — a calm, precise thread of information that had been waiting for the exact moment he re-entered the structure of the Multiverse. Runar’s voice, as steady and faintly amused as Wukong remembered, unfolded in his mind.

”If you are hearing this, then you finished the inheritance and came out in one piece. Good.

I am well. Our paths have separated for now. Do not waste time trying to chase me. Walk your own road.

If we meet again, let’s enjoy a good wine together.”

That was all.

No long explanation. No dramatic farewell. No unnecessary sentiment. Just the same understated calm that had always driven Wukong slightly crazy and earned his respect at the same time.

For a moment Wukong stood frozen on the edge of the continental fragment.

Then he threw his head back and laughed — loud, genuine, and full of relief.

”You absolute bastard,” he said fondly to the empty sky. ”Even your goodbye messages are short.”

The laughter echoed across the void and faded slowly into a wide, lopsided smile. Wukong sat down on the broken edge of the continental fragment, set his staff across his knees, and took another drink from his gourd. The wine inside was still good. It was always good. That was one of the few things in life he could truly rely on.

He looked out at the Multiverse and let himself think about the past.

For a long time he had followed Runar because Runar was the only person in the wider Multiverse he truly trusted. He had also followed him because every step of that path had been terrifyingly exciting, like standing next to a quiet disaster that kept rewriting the rules of what was possible. Runar had never asked him to follow. He had never demanded loyalty. He had simply moved forward, and Wukong had chosen to move with him.

That had been the right choice.

But part of Wukong had wondered, during the long years inside the inheritance, whether emerging would feel like being left behind. He had wondered whether Runar would already be so far ahead that the gap would feel impossible. He had wondered whether the message, if it ever came, would sound like a farewell from someone who no longer remembered him.

It did not.

The message had been short, calm, and completely Runar. It did not push him away. It did not pull him back. It simply acknowledged that Wukong had survived, that Runar was alive, and that their paths had separated for now.

Wukong understood what ”for now” meant.

It meant the door was not closed. It meant they might meet again. It meant that when they did, neither of them would need to explain why they had walked different roads.

He did not feel abandoned. He did not feel small. He felt free.

Runar had never needed him to follow forever. The message made that clear without cruelty. The road ahead belonged to Wukong now — the drunken, chaotic, fiercely independent road that the inheritance had helped him claim as his own.

He adjusted the staff across his shoulders and stood up.

”Alright,” he said to the Multiverse at large. ”Your turn to keep up with me for once.”

He had no fixed destination. Paragon was still ahead. Whatever lay beyond that was further still. There would be fights, wine, ridiculous situations, and more than a few people who would regret underestimating the golden monkey who had once walked beside someone far more terrifying than themselves.

He could already imagine it. Some arrogant faction elder would see him coming, decide he looked like a drunk vagrant, and try to chase him off. Wukong would grin, take a drink, and then show them exactly why the Monkey Drunken Dance had been worth decades of confusion.

The thought made him laugh again.

He hoped to meet Runar again one day. Not as someone who needed protection or guidance. As someone who could stand on his own feet, raise a cup, and trade stories like equals. He wanted to see the look on Runar’s face when he realized Wukong had become someone who could actually surprise him.

That would be worth the entire journey.

Until then, he had a Multiverse to explore.

With one last sharp grin, Wukong stepped off the edge of the continental fragment and vanished into the void in a streak of golden light. His staff rested over his shoulder. His gourd swung at his side. His laughter trailed behind him like a challenge thrown at the entire structure of existence.

The monkey was free.

And the Multiverse was going to have to deal with it.
