Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 303: Chapter 304: Devouring the Will 2

The mindscape was profound.

Layered, recursive, and vast in a way that should not have been possible for someone who had only recently returned from mortal suppression, Runar’s consciousness stretched outward in every direction like an endless architecture of living thought. Golden-white structures formed the foundation of that world, some still forming, others already solid and complex enough to resemble the work of a master architect. Runes drifted through the air like stars, each one carrying a fragment of law that Runar had comprehended during his enlightenment. Spatial folds connected distant regions of the mindscape without visible pathways. Time moved differently in certain areas, slowing near stable structures and looping faintly around others. Elemental concepts flickered at the edges of perception, not as techniques, but as truths that had been welcomed into the foundation of his soul.

The language of the Reliquary itself appeared in places, written into the walls of the mindscape like scripture carved into the foundation of a temple. The Will recognized fragments of its own trial grammar, pieces of suppression law, spatial boundary codes, and monster-directive structures that Runar had somehow read and integrated into his own understanding. The density of his soul imprint was rising even as the Will observed it, and every passing moment made it more stable, more sovereign, and more impossible to erase.

For the first time since it had been created, the Ancient Will felt a flicker of genuine surprise.

This is... deeper than projected, it thought, and the thought carried with it the first true tremor of fear it had ever known. He did not merely read the battlefield. He turned it into part of himself. His soul is not a reflection inside a body. It is becoming a law of its own.

Still, the Will did not waste time on wonder. Fear could be processed later. The goal was simple. Destroy the core of the mindscape. Erase the soul. Claim the body before the enlightenment finished. Everything else was secondary. Even if Runar’s mindscape was more profound than expected, the Will still possessed the authority of the Reliquary’s creator, the accumulated knowledge of countless cycles, and the concentrated will of an existence that had been designed to govern the trial itself. It did not believe a mortal soul could stop it, no matter how talented that mortal might be.

The Will gathered its full authority. Runic structures of pure command formed around it, dense, ancient, and absolute, each one carrying the weight of the trial’s original design. This was not a trial restriction or a layered suppression meant to test a participant’s growth. This was a direct, lethal strike aimed at the foundation of Runar’s existence. If the mindscape collapsed, the soul would collapse with it, and there would be no recovery, no second chance, and no resurrection protocol deep enough to rebuild what had been erased. The Will had used this authority only a handful of times throughout its existence, and never against a soul as developed as Runar’s, but it did not hesitate now. Hesitation would only give him more time to grow.

It prepared to move.

Then it discovered it could not.

The Will tried to advance, expecting the surrounding space to part before its authority the way reality had always parted before the commands of the Reliquary. Nothing happened. The golden-white structures around it remained still, the runes continued drifting through the air, and the profound depths of Runar’s mindscape showed no reaction at all to the presence that had come to destroy them. Confusion flickered through the Will’s consciousness, and it tried again, pouring more of its existence into the motion and forcing its authority outward like a blade meant to cut through the world.

Still nothing.

It could not move a single inch.

Confusion turned into alarm, and alarm quickly sharpened into something colder. The Will checked for bindings, because it assumed Runar must have prepared some kind of trap. There were none. It checked for seals, expecting to find a hidden array locking it in place. There were none. It checked for external interference, wondering whether the Mysterious Woman or some other existence had somehow followed it into the mindscape. The battlefield outside continued to rage, but nothing was actively restraining it inside Runar’s consciousness. There was no chain, no cage, no visible technique, and no obvious law being used against it.

Then the sensation began.

Dissolution.

Slow, steady, and irreversible, fragments of the Will’s runic consciousness began to pull away from the main body of its will. They were not torn from it by force, nor were they shattered by an attack. They were devoured. The structures it had spent countless cycles refining, the ancient commands it had inherited from the Rune Sovereign’s design, the authority it had used to govern the trial for longer than most civilizations lasted — all of it was being drawn into the surrounding golden-white architecture of the mindscape and absorbed as if it had always belonged there. The mindscape was not attacking it. It was digesting it.

The Will’s shock turned into something colder than fear.

What is this? it thought, its consciousness trembling as another fragment peeled away. This is not comprehension. This is not a soul technique. This is not a defensive formation. What is this?

It tried to retract, pulling its consciousness inward and attempting to sever the connection between itself and the mindscape, but the same invisible force held it in place. The dissolution continued, calm and absolute, as though the Will had never been a sovereign intelligence at all. It was being read. It was being broken down into meaning. It was being converted into raw truth that Runar’s soul could use, and the more the Will struggled, the more clearly it realized that struggle only fed the process.

A figure formed in the center of the mindscape.

Runar.

He appeared without drama, without a surge of light, and without any visible technique announcing his presence. One moment the space was empty, and the next he stood there, golden-white eyes calm, expression unreadable, and utterly devoid of the shock the Ancient Will had expected to find. Blood still marked his physical body outside, and traces of exhaustion lingered at the edges of his soul, but inside the mindscape he looked steady, controlled, and completely unsurprised. He regarded the trapped Will for a long moment, not with hatred, not with panic, and not with triumph, but with the quiet certainty of someone who had foreseen this exact possibility and prepared for it long before the trap had been sprung.

Then he spoke, his voice quiet and clear.

”I knew something was wrong with this ruin from the beginning,” Runar said, his words carrying through the mindscape with a weight that made the golden-white structures around them tremble faintly. ”The trial was too deliberate, the timing was too convenient, and the way the Reliquary observed us felt less like a system and more like a predator watching prey. I just didn’t expect that the Will of this place wanted to take over my body.”

The Ancient Will stared at him, unable to move, unable to speak, and unable to stop the dissolution that continued to eat away at its existence. Every calculation it had made collapsed in that single moment. It had believed Runar was fully immersed in enlightenment, his attention completely consumed by the battlefield and the laws he was reading. It had believed the expanded state left his soul vulnerable, because enlightenment opened the mind to reality in a way that usually made the soul easier to influence. It had believed the timing was perfect.

It had walked into a trap that had been prepared before it even detached.

Runar’s gaze remained steady, and the faintest trace of cold understanding passed through his eyes.

”Because I was already on guard,” he continued, ”I split a piece of my consciousness and set it to guard my soul. The enlightenment was real, and I did need it, but I never left my inner world completely unattended. I knew that if something in this ruin wanted to act against me, it would choose the moment I appeared most vulnerable. Thankfully... my caution paid off.”

The Will felt another part of itself dissolve, and this time the sensation carried something it had never truly experienced before. Dread. Not the logical recognition of danger, not the cold calculation of risk, but genuine dread. It had come to erase a soul it believed was inferior, only to discover that the soul had been waiting for it. Runar had not merely been comprehending the laws outside; he had also been comprehending the nature of his own soul, and he had turned the inner world into a place where an intruder’s authority could be consumed.

”You made a huge mistake coming here,” Runar said, and the words carried no triumph, no raised voice, and no need for emphasis. They were simply a fact, spoken with absolute certainty. ”You saw my body as a vessel. You saw my growth as an opportunity. You thought my enlightenment was a weakness. But you never understood what comprehension truly means to me.”

The golden-white structures around them pulsed once, and the Will felt the mindscape tighten around it like a closing mouth. The dissolution accelerated. Its ancient runes, its command structures, and the very core of its identity began breaking apart faster than it could analyze them. It tried to send a final command back to the Reliquary, tried to trigger a protocol, tried to do anything that might preserve some fragment of itself outside Runar’s soul, but the mindscape had already isolated it completely. There was no signal leaving this place. There was no backup. There was no escape.

Runar took one step forward, and the entire mindscape seemed to move with him.

”I will show you why I am the protagonist of this story,” he said.

Outside the mindscape, the broken battlefield continued to tear itself apart. The Mysterious Woman’s runes pressed the Pseudo-Paragon guardian closer to collapse, its golden rings shattering one after another as the last remnants of its resistance were stripped away. Manifestations of space, time, and elements still swirled around Runar’s physical body, but they had become more orderly now, more stable, as though the chaos that had surrounded him was slowly being organized by a mind that had found its center. The layer beyond them groaned under the absence of its guiding intelligence, and distant parts of the Reliquary continued to destabilize, but none of that reached Runar’s inner world.

Inside the mindscape, the Ancient Will remained frozen in place, dissolving piece by piece, staring at the young man who had turned its greatest opportunity into a cage. It had been created to test, to observe, to govern, and eventually to inherit. It had never imagined that the one it sought to inherit would become the one doing the devouring. Its authority faded. Its memories were pulled into the golden-white light. Its fear grew louder with every fragment that vanished.

For the first time since its creation, the Will of the Reliquary felt true fear.

And Runar, standing at the center of his own soul, watched it happen without blinking.
