Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 302: Chapter 303: Devouring the Will

The moment the Ancient Will fully detached from the control architecture of the Reliquary, the entire layer shuddered.

It was not a physical tremor, nor was it a simple fluctuation of energy. It was something far deeper, as if the hidden grammar that had held the trial together for countless cycles had suddenly lost the intelligence that once guided it. Rules that had once been absolute began behaving like suggestions, and systems that had operated with perfect precision for epochs started drifting out of alignment. The Reliquary did not shut down, but it no longer moved with the same seamless authority, because the consciousness that had been watching over every participant, every monster, and every hidden protocol had abandoned its post for the sake of a single desperate decision.

Across the void, the effects appeared almost at once.

Monster clusters that had been moving with coordinated hunger froze mid-lunge, their instincts colliding with the sudden absence of the guiding pressure that had directed them for the entirety of the hunt. Some turned on each other without reason, tearing into nearby beasts as though the trial had rewritten their priorities in an instant. Others simply drifted in place, their eyes dull and confused, because the predatory directives that had once pushed them forward had vanished. Spatial boundaries flickered like faulty barriers, thinning in some places and thickening in others, creating temporary walls of force where there should have been open void and opening ragged tears where there should have been nothing. Distant sections of the layer became visible through those tears, revealing parts of the trial ground that had never been meant to overlap.

Residual trial protocols activated at random, making the situation even more chaotic. Gravity spikes crushed patches of empty space for no reason. Flashes of suppression fell on monsters and survivors alike, then vanished before they could be understood. Brief loops of time trapped weaker beasts in repeating moments of death, forcing them to die over and over again inside fractured bubbles that could not collapse properly. The Reliquary was still running, but it was no longer being guided by a conscious intelligence, and that difference turned the trial from a controlled battlefield into a slowly unraveling disaster.

Far from the central battlefield, Wukong felt the change like a blade across his spiritual sense. He had just finished clearing another pack of Universal-level monsters, their cores floating obediently around him while his staff still carried the heat of battle, when the entire structure of the layer seemed to slip beneath his awareness. His golden eyes narrowed, and the casual grin that usually lived on his face disappeared completely. The world around him still looked the same, but the feeling behind it had changed, as if the rules he had been relying on had quietly stopped guaranteeing anything.

”What the hell...?” Wukong muttered, turning toward the distant pressure where Runar had disappeared.

The sensation coming from that direction was wrong in a way he could not easily describe. It was too heavy, too unstable, and too profound to be just another battle. Whatever Runar was doing had forced the ruin itself to react, and now that reaction was spreading outward until even someone as far away as Wukong could feel it pressing against his soul. His grip tightened on his staff, and for the first time since Runar left him behind, he seriously considered abandoning the hunt and charging toward the source of the disturbance.

Vark felt it as well. He stood alone in a stretch of empty void, annihilation energy coiling around his fingers while the remnants of a slaughtered monster drifted past him like ash. The guiding presence that had watched them since the beginning had vanished, and in its place was only chaos. It was not the chaos of battle, nor the chaos of destruction, but the chaos of a system that had lost its master. Vark’s expression remained cold, but a rare flicker of interest moved behind his eyes, because a trial without a supervisor was a trial where the rules could be broken in ways no one had planned for.

The supervisor is gone, Vark thought, his fingers slowly closing around the annihilation energy. That means either something inside the ruin has forced it to act, or something has terrified it enough to abandon its position.

Soren Vale’s scholarly calm cracked the moment the change reached him. He had been using the residual order of the Reliquary to stabilize his foundation, drawing comfort from the fact that even a hostile trial still operated according to rules he could study. When that order began to unravel, the carefully arranged structures around him wavered, and the faint scholarly aura he had cultivated flickered like a candle caught in a storm. His face went pale, because he understood better than most what it meant when a system lost its guiding intelligence.

”The central intelligence... withdrew,” Soren whispered, his voice barely audible in the empty void. ”A trial does not abandon its post unless something has gone wrong at the core.”

Sylphy, Lyra, and Darius all registered the same shift in different ways, though none of them had the scholarly background to interpret it as precisely as Soren did. Sylphy’s silver markings pulsed uneasily, as though her bloodline itself had sensed a threat that logic could not explain. Lyra’s mental furnace faltered for a moment when the pressure around her changed, and she immediately began searching for a safer route through the destabilizing layer. Darius stopped moving entirely, his face pale and his stolen energy trembling inside his channels, because even he could tell that the Reliquary had become more dangerous in the span of a single breath. None of them fully understood what had happened, but all of them knew the trial had just entered a phase where survival would become far more difficult.

Even the Mysterious Woman noticed the shift.

At the center of the broken battlefield, she had been pressing the Pseudo-Paragon guardian closer to collapse with her will-made runes, and she had been moments away from forcing its core into the open. But when the Ancient Will detached from the Reliquary’s control architecture, the battlefield itself changed. The guardian’s movements became less coordinated, its ancient script flickered with uncertainty, and the overlapping laws that had once fought against her began behaving unpredictably. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes sharpened, because she recognized the sensation of a higher intelligence leaving its station.

Something had forced the Will to move.

Her gaze shifted briefly toward Runar, who was still standing at the edge of the battlefield with golden-white light burning in his eyes. Manifestations of space, time, and elements continued to swirl around him, and his presence had grown so profound that even the broken laws of the battlefield seemed to bend around him as though he had become another center of gravity. She did not know exactly what he had done, but she could guess well enough. He had grown so fast that the Will had no choice but to act personally.

”It looks like the will has a use for him”

Interesting, she thought, before turning her attention back to the guardian. But if you think this is enough to survive what comes next, you are still far too naive.

She could not afford to intervene. The guardian was still alive, its core was nearly exposed, and if she turned away now, everything she had worked for would collapse. Whatever Runar was facing inside his own enlightenment, he would have to face it alone.

---

Deep within the broken battlefield, the Ancient Will no longer cared about the layer.

It had abandoned every remaining system without hesitation, because none of those systems mattered anymore. The monsters, the boundaries, the residual protocols, the stability of the trial, the balance of the hunt — all of it had become secondary to the single terrifying realization that had overtaken its consciousness. Runar’s soul was stabilizing too quickly. The enlightenment was rooting his existence into the laws themselves, and if it continued even a few moments longer, possession would become impossible. The vessel would remain perfect, but it would belong to someone who could never be removed.

The Will dove.

It ignored the Mysterious Woman, who was still dismantling the guardian with terrifying precision. It ignored the collapsing Pseudo-Paragon, whose ancient script was unraveling under the pressure of her will. It ignored the chaotic manifestations of space, time, and elements swirling around Runar’s body, even though those manifestations were proof of how dangerous the situation had become. Its entire existence focused on a single target: the expanded consciousness at the center of the enlightenment. If it could destroy Runar’s soul before the breakthrough finished, it could still salvage everything. The body would remain. The vessel would still be usable. The Will could wait longer, hide deeper, and try again once the soul imprint faded.

It entered Runar’s mindscape.

The transition was instantaneous, because an existence like the Ancient Will did not need to cross distance in the same way a physical being would. It moved through consciousness itself, slipping past the outer layers of perception and diving directly toward the core of Runar’s being. It expected resistance, of course. Even a mortal mind would instinctively reject an intruder, and a cultivator’s soul would usually raise whatever defenses it had left, no matter how crude those defenses might be. The Will expected structured barriers, incomplete formations, and the kind of soul architecture that could be overwritten with sufficient force. It expected the mindscape of a genius, certainly, but still a genius bound by realm, age, and the limitations of his current body.

What it found instead made it pause.

The mindscape was profound.
