Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 319: Chapter 320: Return Home

Evening settled quietly over the shared Cross–Stormwind compound.

The sky above the estate had darkened into a deep blue-black, and the first stars had begun to appear over the horizon like scattered points of quiet light. The compound itself sat in a peaceful stretch of land that had been carefully shaped to feel removed from the wider sector, with low walls, open courtyards, and wide terraces that faced the night. The wards around the property hummed faintly, not as a warning, but as a familiar layer of protection that everyone inside had long since stopped noticing.

Inside the main living hall, the family was relaxed. Universal TV played across a wide projection, filling the room with soft light and distant commentary from across the sector. The broadcast was showing something unimportant — a cultural festival from a nearby system, followed by a brief report on trade routes, followed by another segment that no one was truly watching. It was the kind of background noise that made a room feel alive without demanding attention.

Jake and Lirien sat together near the center of the hall. Caspian and Seraphina occupied the opposite side, close enough to exchange occasional comments about the broadcast. Cassia made the occasional sharp remark at whatever was being shown, her tone dry enough to draw small reactions from the others even when no one fully agreed with her. The atmosphere was ordinary, comfortable, and peaceful, the kind of evening that only existed when people felt safe enough to let their guard down.

Outside, on the open terrace that faced the night sky, the Runar clone sat alone.

He gazed at the stars without really seeing them. The terrace was quiet, cooled by a gentle night breeze that carried the faint scent of stone and distant greenery. From where he sat, he could hear the muted voices of the family inside, and that sound alone was enough to remind him of the role he had been playing for weeks. He had smiled with them. He had eaten with them. He had answered questions, offered comments, and maintained the steady presence they expected from him. None of them had suspected that the person sitting among them was only a fragment of the real one.

The connection with the main body had been severed for a long time.

He had felt the exact moment it happen — a clean, absolute disconnection that left no residual thread. One moment there had been a distant link, faint but reassuring, and the next moment there had been nothing at all. The absence had been so complete that he had known immediately it was not a normal disruption. Something far beyond this sector had interfered. From that point onward, he had known the original body was likely facing danger far beyond anything in this sector, perhaps beyond anything he could even properly imagine.

He had chosen not to tell the family.

There was no reason to burden them with uncertainty when they could do nothing about it. Celestia would have worried quietly and hidden it well. Nyla would have tried to stay cheerful while watching the door every time it opened. Jake would have begun making preparations that could not possibly help against Paragon-level matters. The others would have carried the tension without knowing how to express it. So the clone had continued playing his role, smiling when required, answering questions when asked, and carrying the quiet worry alone.

He wondered, not for the first time, whether the real body was still intact... and whether it had overcome whatever stood in its way.

The thought had become familiar. It did not consume him, because he still had duties here, but it remained in the background like a cold stone sitting at the bottom of a river. He had spent enough time with Runar’s way of thinking to know that worry without action was useless, yet some things could not simply be reasoned away. The main body had gone into the wider Multiverse carrying ambition, danger, and secrets that even the clone had not fully understood. If something had happened to him, the consequences would not be small.

Then the link returned.

It happened the instant the original Runar stepped out of Volasava’s personal space and back into the Multiverse. The connection re-established itself with sudden, overwhelming clarity, so sharp and complete that the clone’s hand tightened against the railing of the terrace. The restoration was not gradual. It did not flicker or rebuild itself piece by piece. It arrived all at once, like a door opening after weeks of darkness.

Information flooded across the restored link — not in words, but in pure existence. The degree of change was staggering. The original body was no longer operating on any scale the clone had previously known. The link carried no detailed memories yet, but the sheer weight behind it was enough to tell the clone that something fundamental had changed. The presence on the other end felt deeper, calmer, and incomparably more complete than before.

A few seconds later, space shifted silently in front of him.

The real Runar appeared.

There was no dramatic flash, no pressure wave, and no disturbance in the air. One moment the terrace was empty except for the clone, and the next moment Runar stood there as though the night itself had quietly made room for him. His golden-white eyes held a depth that was difficult to describe, and his presence had become so perfectly controlled that even the clone had to look twice to be certain he was truly there.

The clone looked at him for a long moment, then smiled with quiet relief.

There was no need for words. The clone dissolved into soft light and flowed back into the main body, transferring every memory and experience from the time they had been separated. The process was smooth and natural, without conflict or resistance, because they had never been two separate people in the truest sense. In less than a breath, only one Runar remained on the terrace.

He stood still for a moment, absorbing the returned memories.

He saw the evenings the clone had spent with the family. He saw the conversations they had shared, the small routines they had maintained, and the quiet moments when the clone had looked toward the sky and wondered whether the original would ever return. He saw Celestia smiling over a cup of tea, Nyla laughing at something Cassia had said, Jake trying to pretend he wasn’t paying attention to everyone else, and the rest of the family simply existing in the peace they had built. All of it settled into him with a warmth that even his newly completed soul could not ignore.

Then he turned toward the house.

His aura was fully suppressed — compressed to the absolute minimum his new existence allowed. Even so, the twin Supreme Principles could not be erased completely. The air around him carried a faint, unreadable depth, as though reality itself had become slightly more attentive in his presence. He kept that depth carefully contained, not because he feared harming anyone, but because he did not want the weight of what he had become to press down on the people he had returned to see.

He stepped inside.

Celestia and Nyla were the first to notice.

Both women turned at almost the same time. Whatever they had been watching on the projection was forgotten. Their eyes landed on him, and something in their expressions shifted. They could not name what had changed, but they felt it immediately — a quiet, fundamental difference in the man standing in the doorway. He looked the same, yet he also felt different in a way that went beyond appearance. It was the difference between someone who had been away and someone who had returned from somewhere that could not easily be explained.

Celestia’s lips curved into a calm, genuine smile. Her eyes softened with relief, and the tension she had been carrying without showing it finally eased.

Nyla’s smile came a heartbeat later, brighter and more open. She looked at him as though she had been waiting for this exact moment without realizing how much she had needed it.

”Welcome home,” they said, almost together.

Both rose from their seats and crossed the room without hesitation. Celestia reached him first, wrapping her arms around him with familiar steadiness. Nyla followed a moment later, pressing in from the side. Runar returned the embraces carefully, consciously keeping the weight of his presence as light as possible. He could feel the warmth of their concern, the quiet joy in their relief, and the unspoken questions they were choosing not to ask yet. For now, they simply held onto him, and that was enough.

The rest of the family reacted quickly.

Jake stood, surprise and relief crossing his face. Lirien’s eyes softened, and she gave a small nod that carried more meaning than words. Caspian and Seraphina rose as well, their expressions showing the same quiet gladness that filled the room. Cassia arched an eyebrow, already studying him with her usual sharpness, though even she did not hide the fact that she was pleased to see him.

”You’re back,” Jake said, voice steady but warmer than usual.

Runar nodded once. ”I am.”

The living hall filled with overlapping voices and movement as the family gathered around him. Questions came in scattered fragments — how long he would stay, whether he was hurt, what he had seen, whether he had eaten, whether he needed rest. Runar answered simply, keeping his replies grounded and ordinary. There would be time later for heavier truths. For now, he let the familiar noise of home settle around him.

Celestia remained close, her hand resting lightly against his arm. She did not press for details, but her gaze made it clear she had already noticed more than the others. Nyla, still holding onto his other side, studied his face with open curiosity tempered by relief. Every so often she would glance at his hands or his eyes, as if checking that he was truly there and not another illusion.

Cassia folded her arms and leaned against the back of a chair. ”You look like you walked out of something important. Should we be worried?”

Runar glanced at her. ”No.”

”That is exactly what someone should say if we should be worried,” Cassia replied.

Jake gave her a look. ”Let him breathe.”

Cassia shrugged, though her eyes remained thoughtful. ”I’m just saying. The last time he came back looking calm like this, something enormous had happened.”

Runar did not answer immediately. He looked around the room, taking in the faces of the people who had waited for him without knowing how long they would have to wait. The projection on the wall continued to play unheeded, its light shifting quietly across the walls.

”I’m here now,” he said simply. ”That is the only thing that matters tonight.”

That answer seemed to settle the room. The questions slowed. The tension that had briefly risen eased again. Lirien brought him something warm to drink, even though he did not truly need it. Jake asked one or two practical questions about the sector, then let the matter drop when Runar gave short answers. Caspian and Seraphina exchanged a quiet look, then returned to their seats. Cassia remained standing for a little longer, watching him with that sharp gaze of hers, before finally sitting back down with a faint shrug.

Celestia guided him toward the center of the room, and he allowed himself to sit between her and Nyla. The warmth of their presence was steady and grounding. Nyla leaned slightly against his shoulder after a moment, while Celestia’s hand remained near his, close enough to reassure herself that he was real.

For the first time in a long while, Runar stood in the place he had chosen to return to before anything else. The Multiverse, the Paragons, the Supreme Principles, and the path beyond all of it remained waiting outside. There would be decisions to make, dangers to face, and truths to uncover. There would be consequences from what had happened inside the Reliquary, and there would be powers that would continue searching for what had vanished.

Tonight, none of that mattered.

He was home.
