Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 335: Chapter 336: The Threshold Approaches

The final stretch of the decades arrived without announcement.

There was no sudden shift in the air, no dramatic omen, no external force declaring that the end of this long road was near. It simply became clear one quiet morning that the nature of their training had to change. Runar felt it first, the same way he felt most things — through the complete clarity of Absolute Comprehension reading the density of their foundations and confirming that further external pressure would no longer serve them.

He stopped introducing new truths.

There was nothing left that needed to be taught in the old way. Everything of value that the Multiverse could offer them had already been given, refined, and absorbed. What remained was compression. The long, careful work of taking every principle, every insight, every fragment of experience they had gathered across the decades and folding it inward until the foundation could bear the weight of departure.

*The book is written,* Runar thought. *Now it only needs to be bound.*

They returned more often to the sealed pocket dimension during this period. The familiar auroras drifted overhead. The cloud-silk surfaces remained soft and stable. The living spiritual grass swayed without wind, carrying the quiet density of years spent refining in the same place. It had become less a temporary refuge and more a home that had witnessed their entire journey from the moment Runar first chose to wait.

Celestia sometimes paused during her compression sessions to look around the dimension. She never said anything about it, but Runar noticed the way her gaze lingered on the auroras, the way her hand rested on the cloud-silk surface a moment longer than necessary. She was acknowledging the place. Thanking it, in her own quiet way, for holding them through the most important decades of their existence.

Runar did not comment on it. Some things did not need words.

Celestia’s storm lattice reached a new elegance in these final years.

It no longer felt like a framework she actively maintained. The structure had settled so deeply into her existence that it simply was. Precision, order, and absolute control no longer required conscious direction. When she released her authority now, the surrounding environment did not resist or push back. It rearranged itself around her will as if recognizing a higher pattern.

During one refinement session, she released her lattice across the full extent of the pocket dimension without intending to. The auroras slowed their drift. The spiritual grass bent in a single, unified direction. The cloud-silk surfaces smoothed themselves. Every element of the dimension responded to her presence not because she commanded it, but because her authority had become so natural that the environment recognized it as part of its own order.

Celestia opened her eyes, looking mildly surprised. ”I did not mean to do that.”

Runar observed the way the dimension slowly returned to its natural rhythm now that her attention had shifted. ”You no longer impose structure. You are structure.”

Celestia considered this. She tested it against her own perception, the way she tested everything, and found no contradiction. ”Is that enough?”

”It is more than enough.”

She closed her eyes again and continued her compression. The corner of her mouth curved slightly, a small expression of satisfaction that she did not bother to hide. Runar watched her for a moment longer, noting the way her foundation settled deeper with each breath. The inheritance he had woven for her so long ago had long since ceased to be an external gift. It had become her own law, written into the core of her being through decades of deliberate work.

*She is ready,* he thought. *Or close enough that the difference no longer matters.*

Nyla’s curiosity engine matured in parallel, though the texture of her growth remained different.

The wild creativity that had always defined her path did not disappear. If anything, it grew sharper. But it had gained a new stability that had been missing in earlier decades. She could generate solutions in the middle of conceptual conflict without the earlier risk of her own foundation trembling under the strain. Possibility itself had become a tool she could aim rather than a force she had to wrestle into temporary obedience.

Where once her experiments had carried the scent of controlled danger, they now carried the weight of reliable power.

She still laughed when a new combination surprised even her. That part of her had never changed.

During one afternoon session, Nyla attempted to fold a fragment of adaptive law into a structure that Celestia had helped her stabilize the previous week. The combination should not have worked. The two principles operated on fundamentally different assumptions about how reality should behave. Nyla combined them anyway, not through force, but through the simple act of asking what would happen if they were allowed to coexist.

The result was a small, self-sustaining loop of adaptive structure that generated new variations of itself without external input. It was not a principle. It was not a technique. It was something closer to a living question that continued to produce answers.

Nyla stared at it for a long moment. Then she looked at Runar. ”I think I just invented something that shouldn’t exist.”

Runar examined it with Absolute Comprehension. ”It exists. That is sufficient.”

Celestia, watching from her own meditation position, opened one eye. ”Does it do anything useful?”

Nyla considered the question. ”It generates possibilities.”

Celestia closed her eye again. ”That is not a function. That is a threat.”

Nyla grinned and tucked the little adaptive loop into her foundation, where it settled comfortably alongside her curiosity engine and continued producing quiet variations of itself. Runar watched the process with faint approval. Nyla had learned to aim her wildness without losing it. That was harder than it sounded.

The three of them spent more time in reflection during these quieter years. The urgency that had driven their earlier training had faded, replaced by something more deliberate. They still cultivated. They still refined. But the rhythm had slowed, and the spaces between sessions had grown longer. Those spaces were not empty. They were filled with conversation, silence, and the simple comfort of existing near people who had walked the same road.

One evening they sat together on the edge of a nameless universe whose skies held constellations none of them had ever bothered to catalog. The laws there were gentle and unremarkable. Runar had chosen the place precisely because it offered nothing that required their attention. The silence was intentional. The stars moved slowly. The air was warm. There was no pressure, no task, no destination waiting for them beyond the next breath.

Celestia spoke first, her voice calm and almost conversational as she watched the slow drift of distant stars.

”I used to fear being left behind,” she said. ”When you first stepped so far ahead of us, I wondered if the distance would eventually become permanent. Not because I doubted your willingness to wait, but because I doubted whether my own path could ever close the gap.”

She did not look at Runar when she said it. Her eyes remained on the stars, and her voice carried no self-pity. It was simply a truth she had carried for a long time and had finally chosen to set down.

Nyla, leaning against Runar’s other side with one leg drawn up, gave a small sound of agreement.

”I used to fear not being enough,” she admitted. ”That no matter how hard I pushed, or how many risks I took, I would still be the one slowing us down when the final step arrived. I didn’t say it often. But it was there.”

She paused, then added with a faint smile, ”It’s hard to admit that when your entire path is built on being fearless.”

Celestia glanced at her. ”You were never fearless. You were simply too curious to be stopped by fear.”

Nyla considered this, then nodded. ”That’s fair.”

Runar looked at both of them for a long moment before answering. His expression remained the same steady calm it had carried for decades, but there was a quiet warmth beneath it that only they ever saw clearly.

”Those fears are no longer relevant,” he said. ”You have walked the road. The road has answered you.”

He did not elaborate with encouragement or reassurance. There was no need. Both women had already reached the Paragon Realm. Their foundations carried the density and stability required for the final threshold. Only a single remaining step separated them from the point where ascension would become possible rather than theoretical.

Celestia turned her gaze away from the stars and looked at him. ”Do you remember when you told us you would wait?”

”Yes.”

”I believed you,” she said. ”But I think part of me needed to hear it more than once.”

Nyla nodded. ”Same. Not because I didn’t trust you. Because I needed to remind myself that the promise was real.”

Runar was quiet for a moment. The stars continued their slow drift. The warm air moved gently around them.

”The promise is still real,” he said. ”It will remain real until the step is taken.”

Neither woman responded with words. Celestia simply leaned slightly closer to his side. Nyla rested her head against his shoulder. The three of them sat together under the nameless stars, and the silence that followed was full rather than empty.

Runar confirmed the fact internally with the same quiet satisfaction he applied to most completed processes. He adjusted their final training accordingly. External pressures were reduced. The sealed realms they still visited were chosen for refinement rather than trial. The work became almost meditative — long sessions of internal compression, careful polishing of already-dense principles, and the slow alignment of soul and law until nothing remained that could fracture under the strain of leaving the Multiverse behind.

The Multiverse itself remained completely silent around him.

No suppression. No residual pressure. No subtle attempts to reassert hierarchy. It was as though the entire structure had long since accepted that the entity who had once read it completely was no longer something to be managed or resisted. The pocket dimension stayed stable. The years continued to pass without resistance. Even the distant Paragons, who had once moved with such urgency to fulfill his demands, had settled into a cautious stillness that suggested they had decided the safest course of action was to leave him entirely alone.

Runar did not care either way. The Multiverse had given him everything it could. Whether it feared him, respected him, or simply ignored him was no longer a question that held any weight.

At one point during this final period, a faint causal thread Runar had left behind long ago stirred at the edge of his awareness.

Wukong’s path was approaching its own turning point. The inheritance sealed within that separate dimension was nearing completion. The wild, drunken, fiercely independent trajectory the monkey had chosen was about to produce its result. Runar noted the development the same way he noted most distant events — with calm acknowledgment and no urge to interfere. The message he had left would activate when the time was right. Wukong would emerge when he was ready. There was nothing more that needed to be done.

*Walk well,* Runar thought, and let the thread settle back into silence.

The three of them spoke of the future only rarely.

They did not make grand declarations about what waited beyond the Multiverse. They did not speculate about the nature of the Omniverse or the beings who already resided there. The time for those conversations would come after the step was taken, not before. For now, the work remained simple and precise: finish the compression, stabilize the final layers, and prepare the foundation so thoroughly that the act of ascension would be a clean continuation rather than a desperate leap.

Celestia spent long hours in stillness, her storm lattice circulating in patterns so refined they barely disturbed the air around her. Nyla alternated between intense bursts of experimental generation and equally intense periods of quiet integration, letting the new stability settle into her bones. Runar remained present for both — correcting a single thread of principle when necessary, offering a single sentence of guidance when a blockage appeared, and otherwise simply existing beside them as the constant he had promised to be.

There were still moments of lightness.

Nyla would occasionally open one eye during a long session and ask whether he was bored yet. Celestia would answer for him before he could speak, pointing out that he had never once shown signs of impatience in all the decades they had walked together. Nyla would counter that not showing impatience was not the same as not feeling it. Runar would only give a small, dry acknowledgment and return his attention to the subtle movements of their foundations.

Once, during a particularly long compression session, Nyla’s curiosity engine produced an unexpected harmonic that made the spiritual grass in the pocket dimension glow pink for three full minutes. Celestia opened her eyes, looked at the grass, looked at Nyla, and said nothing.

Nyla looked at the grass, looked at Celestia, and said, ”That was not intentional.”

Celestia replied, ”I know. That is what concerns me.”

Runar adjusted the harmonic with a single thought and returned to his observation. The grass returned to its normal color. Nyla made a small note in her memory to try that again later, under more controlled conditions.

The years of this final stretch did not feel heavy.

They felt complete.

One evening, after a particularly long session of mutual refinement, the three of them remained seated together in the pocket dimension. The auroras drifted overhead in their familiar slow patterns. The residual energy of their joined circulation still hummed faintly in the air. Celestia’s breathing had settled into the deep, even rhythm of near-completion. Nyla’s presence carried the quiet readiness of someone who had finally stopped needing to prove anything to herself.

Runar observed them both with the same calm certainty he had carried since the day he first chose to wait.

The threshold was no longer approaching.

It was already within reach.

Celestia and Nyla sat side by side in meditation, their foundations nearly complete, the final layers of refinement settling into place with the slow inevitability of a process that had been given all the time it required. Runar remained nearby, awareness resting lightly over them, expression steady and certain.

The decades had done their work.

The road had been walked.

And the step that waited at the end of it was no longer a question of possibility.

It was only a matter of timing.
